EXO and SM...
I remember when I started this blog, one of the biggest stories to hit the news was EXO’s China line leaving the group and SM Entertainment (minus Lay). Now we’ve come full circle, the tradition continues and Baekhyun, Chen, Xiumin are also filing for contract terminations to get out of SM, signaling the end of EXO. This one is going to be a long read...
Tumblr media
I knew SM never stopped mentally and financially abusing their idols (especially considering how all their idols magically stayed for +10 years). A little more backstory. After half of TVXQ left SM in 2009 because of those now infamous slave-contracts, and basically getting paid pennies when they brought in millions, SM blacklisted the boys, as well as Hangeng from Super Junior, who also left for similar reasons, but promised to change (a lie).
A few years ago, Girls Generation’s Jessica (who got kicked out in 2014) wrote her “fantasy book” about the shady contracts all the idols were forced to sign (rookies sign a 7-year-contract plus an additional 3-year-extension-contract, meaning the idols couldn’t freely negotiate better terms after the first one was up). Then in 2014, EXO’s Chris, Luhan and Tao left for the same exploitive contracts (proving SM hadn’t changed but found a loophole around new labor laws).
All those idols, Jaejoong, Junsu, Luhan, Jessica, etc. are still not able to promote their solo material on music shows, because SM threatened to not let their remaining idols visit those same shows. So cowardly, the TV stations backed SM and blocked everyone who filed a lawsuit to rightfully terminate those terrible contracts. Let me repeat that, the idols won against SM and were allowed to get out of those slave-contracts, but were punished for it by almost losing their careers. This was SM’s tactic for a long time to stop idols from leaving them (”backstab us, and you will never promote on TV again”).
Well, it’s 2023 and three EXO members just filed a lawsuit to get out of their slave-contracts with SM. Yes, SM never stopped financially abusing their idols, even though fans kept denying the incredibly unfair +10-year-contracts. We already know that Red Velvet have those long contracts, because there was zero news about their renewals after 7 years, like with pretty much every other k-pop group. And I’m pretty sure all of NCT and aespa were forced to sign those terrible contracts as well.
We will see how things unfold and whether the rest of EXO terminates their contracts as well, or whether more of the older idols finally speak up about their situation. Maybe even NCT members will try to get out of their contracts, it would be a glorious end to the shady, abusive company that SM is (and fuck Lee Soo Man for stealing idols money, embezzling it, blacklisting innocent singers after draining every penny out of them, and emotionally scaring them for life).

There is WAY too much to unpack about the whole HYBE/SM takeover...what I've been reading so far is very interesting and eye opening to say the least...but I wish to state the obvious which some dunderheads can't get through their thick skulls and that is that BTS is NOT HYBE, they are not interchangeable, so please get off that kick.
Some people are so knee jerk toxic they aren't capable of simple common sense. I literally just read several posts about hating BTS for this and one sick mental person mentioned hiring executioners (I cleaned it up, I won't repeat what they actually said) if their group(s) get disbanded because of this. I mean...what is WRONG with some people?!
Please read up on things and get informed before running around screaming toxic and repugnant criminal BS that isn't remotely based on fact.
And for the record, no, I'm not thrilled about monopolies, nor some of the things HYBE as a Co. has done, or failed to do. But that has nothing to do with BTS members. They aren't personally sitting on the board of HYBE for goodness sakes, get a grip.
Also, it was going to be a takeover anyway from the sound of it. It was going to be an even bigger Kakao monopoly if LSM hadn't gone to HYBE to make a deal. Either way, a takeover was going down.
How SMs internal problems or what HYBE does are suddenly the fault of BTS members is just ludicrously ridiculous.
Get ahold of your hysteria and try a bit of critical thinking.

Lee Soo Man (SM) recently stated that he feels K-pop can achieve what religion has failed to achieve. Do you agree or disagree? Is this a dangerous statement to make, or unsurprising given K-pop's accoutrements? Is a secular, pop-culture-based religion such a bad idea?
Thinking of how to possibly give an answer to this, I was reminded of a famous Malraux quote in which he said "The 21st century will be religious, or it will not be at all." It could have been a good introduction for our discussion, except Malraux never said nor wrote that statement. Bear with me through this short explanation before I actually get to the words of another great (!), that is, Lee Soo Man.
I decided to do a quick google search in order to familiarize myself again with the various interpretations of the supposed quote because I wanted to be sure if it would make sense in using it in my response. I was surprised to find out that it has been made up somehow, a combination of other statements. To think the quote was also used in my high school history book and how fascinated I was at that time (or mostly confused, I wasn't really sure what it meant). How easy it is for the wrong information to be spread and become widely accepted. And I was nearly the point of contributing to that myself! It appears that the quote is actually a one sentence summary of some ideas Malraux indeed had about religion and how it will change in the 21st century. An actual quote sounds like this:
"The central problem of the end of the century will be the religious problem - in a form as different from that which we know, as Christianity was from the ancient religions. "
I will link the article which explains the common misconception and everyone is free to explore and read more about Malraux, The Human Condition and other philosophical themes related to humanity and religion.
In this particular case, I will take the freedom of coming up with an argument based on the actual quote, with the risk of maybe grossly misunderstanding it. But, as much as I've wrote a few paragraphs already on something unrelated, this is merely a BTS/K-Pop tumblr blog, so please be understanding with me.
So, the question is, is the 21st century religious? It is, it just changed its gods. Just as politeism was replaced by Christianity in some parts of the world and then Christianity losts its importance that it once had several centuries later, we are now facing a world in which I might suspect, we found our gods among us. Of course these gods are on some higher level, but they're not quintesentially different from the rest of us. They may remain gods forever, or easily stripped of that nature in almost an instant. Becoming a god is possible and the concept is sold as being attainable for everyone who wants it and works hard enough for it. I'd say even Warhol predicted what Malraux said in a way, with his ideas on everyone's 15 minutes of fame. We are living individualistic times in which we are told that we are important and special. Except we also love to worship others who are somehow a bit more important and special. We each have this need to believe in something, someone. For some it's Jesus Christ, while for others is Britney. We need them because they inspire, they bring comfort, they are doing things and are able to reach masses of people in a way that regular folks cannot.
And finally, Lee Soo Man is right, but also wrong. The idols he helped create and the culture of idols are some equivalent of gods that are worshipped, but they did not replace religion. They are religion. I don't think religion has ever failed. Some forms of religion may have failed or have been replaced, but the concept itself is ever present. One could say they're an atheist and they don't believe in a Christ or Buddha, but what about the shrine in their room containing albums, posters, photocards, merchandise? Listening and watching regularly to what the idols say and do? Preaching and praising them to the masses on social media? That's a form of religious worship. And it's not surprising because idols are meant to be worshipped. For their skills, talent, personality, beauty. It's all we talk about everyday. And some are religious extremists while others see it as something more casual, situating idols in a row with liking actors, writers, sportsmen, thinkers, gurus, youtubers, their own self.

HYBE and SM Entertainment...
After all the crazy news in the past week, we got new huge developments in the “Lee Soo Man vs. SM Entertainment shareholders” saga, HYBE became the biggest shareholder of SM after buying out 14.8% of Lee Soo Man’s share of the company for $335 million (and want to buy more). HYBE is now officially the biggest entrainment company in South Korea, only big conglomerates like CJ and Kakao have more influence, but that’s not thanks to their idols, it’s mostly thanks to other sectors like internet search engines, communication apps, and television networks they own.
Tumblr media
Kakao (who is now the second largest shareholder of SM) was trying to take over, so LSM took the chance to sell his shares to HYBE, in hope they won’t oust him out of the company like the new SM CEO’s were trying to do with “SM 3.0″. Let me be clear here, LSM was stealing money from the company, staff, and idols by creating new companies and funneling money into them. And this news means he made a deal with HYBE that will likely allow him to continue to do exactly that! So, shame on HYBE for allowing LSM to continue to rip off his employees, just because they wanted a cut as well. More details about the deal will come out later and how everything will change for the two companies will also be seen in the next few months or years, but I know that one company (HYBE) having this much control and power in the entertainment industry can’t be a good thing.
