uncle iroh is treated very much like a paragon of virtue in the series. yes we know he has had a violent past, that he has done terrible things, committed atrocities in the service of the fire nation— but we don’t really feel it because all of that had happened off screen and prior to the series. instead, he comes to us as a more perfect being and one deified with secret good deeds revealed throughout the story: uncle iroh is the keeper of the dragons and an important member of the white lotus, he is just that awesome.
uncle iroh is so divorced from his immediate past that we don’t see him haunted by any of it unless it’s by lu ten— which begs the question: did he really turn his back on the fire nation due to a moral awakening or was it only/mostly for his own good? he certainly doesn’t behave in a manner you’d expect from a repentant ex-imperialist: he’s not too worried about walking the streets of ba singe se, let alone actually staying there after the war ended. (the same war he participated in on the side of the aggressors, mind you.) he is shameless enough to be living there while hiding away and was unscrupulous in accepting hospitality from earth kingdom folks who were made refugees by the fire nation, i.e., song’s family. does he not feel guilty or at least uncomfortable with his circumstances, especially since it has only been 5 or so years since the siege at ba sing se and thus still very fresh in the grand scheme of things? is iroh just that Enlightened and At Peace with his past that it doesn’t color his every movement? or is his lack of a moral hangover just a writing oversight? were they scared to make their most lovable character in a rated TV-Y7 cartoon a tad more polarizing?
while uncle iroh does his job well for the story— that is, to act as zuko’s guiding light— i do wish he were knocked off his pedestal a bit more. uncle iroh is, after all, the proto-zuko to ozai’s proto-azula. i wish to see him at least slightly paranoid about people recognizing him from his military days and vice versa. i wish to see him uneasy about being in the earth kingdom (out of guilt? as opposed to zuko’s superiority complex and anger). i wish to see him meet another person who also has visible burn scars, one that has nothing to do with zuko/his family, and still look away in shame or disgust by the implications. et cetera et cetera. anything to indicate he feels something more about himself and other people that isn’t just Wise Old Man.

i got to see hadestown on the west end and all i have to say is AAAA. i liked the original broadway cast so much i didn't think anything else could compare to me, but omg they were all amazing and maybe it's a bias from seeing it live vs seeing broadway through recordings, but i actually enjoyed them so much more. i think what helped is i felt a lot more for donal's orpheus, whereas reeve's never managed to really put at my heartstrings.
okayokay what i have to list out loved (going to try and go through the show chronologically):
la barrie's hermes using no titles and they/them pronouns. the lyrics were changed to reflect this eg "excuse me, hermes" instead of "mister hermes" at the beginning of 'wait for me', and "feathers on their feet" instead of "feathers on his feet" in 'road to hell'.
the cast keeping their own accents. it's not often in uk theatre to hear british regional accents, even if the actor has or had that accent. so hearing a nothern accent from eurydice was aaaa. as a northerner it made me really happy. i'm not sure if that's grace's real accent or not but aa it just made .
donál keeping his irish accent too. and the chemistry between his orpheus and grace's eurydice was adorable.
hermes slowly kissing persephone hand during 'our lady of the underground'.
PERSEPHONE didn't think I could love anyone more than grey but omg. i've never loved "our lady of the underground" but I do now, the way gloria performed it and this one long belting note she did while bending over crazy far backwards aaa. and at one point while dancing she acted like she'd gone too hard and pulled her back and got stuck, but then very smoothly went into leaning down towards the audience and singing directly at people in the front rows.
wasn't 100% sold on hades at first since his voice isn't as deep as what I'm used too (used to listening to page as hades), but after "i conduct the electric city" and the lights went out and when they came back on there was a single silly spotlight on hades was stood leaning against the door checking his nails all sultry like. his acting was so different from what I'm used too, more energetic and more... playful? i'm not sure if that's the right word but i can't think of anything else. and less cold and stern than page but I ended up really enjoying him. i've got two very different versions of hades i love now.
new lyrics in epic three, "what has become of the heart of that man" has been replaced with new lyrics. i think "man with his arms outreached" has reverted back to pre-broadway "man with his hat in his hands" but i'll be honest me memory of what the new lyrics are is not great.
i cried when hades and persephone danced. both of them were crying. and when they finished dancing he sobbed and crumpled into her arms and she stroked his head and back and held him the whole time orpheus and eurydice sang "promises"
hades breaking it down during the dance, doing silly dance moves and making persphone laugh, and then she joins in and does his silly dance moves with him 10/10 people supporting their partners silly dance moves.
hades "i don't know" answer to if orpheus and eurydice can go... i'm used to patrick page's grave, defeated "i don't know" and here instead you could really see the inner conflict and he was holding hands with persephone and when he said it she angrily let go of his hand and he had his little "his kiss the riot" freak out.
orpheus and hades handshake during the wait for me reprise aaaa

people on here really don't like re-contextualizing midnights as a breakup album but. with "hits different", with the news of their breakup, and now finally "youre losing me", it just. it makes so much sense as a break-up album. and even if we didnt consider it as one at the time, i dont think there's anything wrong with coming to see it as one now. looking at it at all at face value, it just makes sense. even if some people might not want to hear that.
taylor has always said midnights is an album about choices - the ones we treasure, the ones we regret, the ones we mull over until the early morning.
lavender haze, given all that we now know, was clearly about taylor trying to keep her head in the clouds -- blissful ignorance -- a la "lavendar haze" -- when its apprarent theres a big elephant in the room. i always found it interesting that whenever she referred to her and joe's relationship, she fixated a lot on when they first got together, and he was there for her when no one else was. its almost like that was her anchor and justification to stay with him anyway, despite the (now-implied) emotional neglect that was actually going on, despite the multiple breaks they've supposedly have had to take over the course of their relationship. she just wants to stay in that time period where everything was perfect, when everything was still rosy, in that "lavendar haze".
bejeweled -- the idea that, even though someone wants to keep her a secret, and dim her light in the process, it wont stop her from shining, and she cant help it. and if theyre not willing to let her shine, something has got to give. the idea of her being kept to the basement, by this person, when she just wants "the penthouse of your heart".
the same themes in bejeweled of doing all the extra credit, just to get graded on a curve, to youre losing me, where "i give all my best me's, my endless empathy, and all i did was bleed"
maybe calling midnights a breakup album is too reductive, since not all the songs refer to her and joe's relationship, and thus not every song is a breakup song. but to call midnights anything other than, at the very least, a melancholic, relationships-on-the-rocks (re: theme of staying up until midnight over decisions), break-up adjacent album, where its clear something has got to give, despite the good that they had - especially given the context we have now - is amiss.
like the wisdom that comes with looking back at her re-recordings with new eyes and revisiting those times knowing what she knows now, she also uses the theme of midnights to ponder her then-current problems. such as: do i have to lose the person that i love most, because nothing they are doing, and everything they have been doing, is not enough anymore?

Astro Observations ✨ Pt. 3
Chiron in the 6th house: It is common for this placement to take a toll on your daily routine. It can manifest itself as chronic (health) conditions/ailments that require so much of your time and attention that it automatically sabotages/reduces the time that you have to address other daily tasks or responsibilities you may need to get done. The native might feel as they were (almost) forced to maintain a healthy and sustainable lifestyle to help possible illnesses or chronic pain they may experience. Their work life might be affected by these (possible) health concerns and it is common for the native to switch jobs frequently or even live from short-term/temporary gigs they find here and there. On the other hand, the native could be a healthy being that is never satisfied or happy with their work life (or daily routine). There might be a feeling of helplessness when it comes to their job. Feeling underappreciated, ignored or neglected in the workplace is common with this placement. Because of all these different experiences, it can be easy for this individual to give good advice regarding wellness, health, routine, work-life balance, etc. to other people going through similar situations; this is the perfect opportunity to find their true calling and provide value to society and themselves, helping their daily routine become the life they enjoy and are grateful for.
Sagittarius in the second house: You value new experiences, places and learning; and it is through learning and studying that you develop confidence in yourself. The native is usually excited/hopeful for the future. There's a noticeable abundance (of many different things) that come with this placement. This can mean that the person will always find the means to do what they need to and have a constant source of income; however, this will always come along with abundance of expenses. Money can be constant or easy to find, but it will also be spent rather fast. Even if the native does experience financial problems, these are temporary and come to an end sooner than later.  It is common for the native to live in a place where cost of living is high. It is advised to have a savings account reserved to help with unexpected expenses or unplanned situations that might pop up.
Mars in the 8: There's a A LOT of energy, drive, passion and strength within the native. Emotions could be easily repressed or hard to express. This placement brings a lot of sexual energy to the native. This person needs a partner that has the same or similar (sexual) needs to be satisfied. In the case that these needs are neglected, ignored or not met, the accumulation of this relentless influx of energy could end up causing anxiety, low self-steem, mood swings, A N G E R. In a few words, sexual satisfaction is primordial with this placement. Sex could still be conservative but at the same time rough, fast and passionate. It could also be slower, long lasting but very intense. This person definitely has the dominant role in the bedroom. There could also be a tendency to cheat or have intercourse with different (multiple) people. With this placement, it is common for the individual to go through abrupt, fast, harsh (even violent) transformations that might feel wrong at the time of occurrence, but necessary for their own growth. The native has to be cautious when it comes to fire, as it is possible for these individuals to lose a house or other belongings in an accident involving fire.
Stay tuned for more! ✨

i will forever wish that the atla writers either (1) wrote iroh as an inarguably repentant ex-imperialist whose behavior and actions in the story aligned with this fact, OR (2) embraced the fact that iroh was not wholly repentant about his past actions at all.
bonus points if they have zuko - who is on his own journey to redemption - realize this about his beloved uncle, thus forcing him to think for himself on the matter of his place in the fire nation. the story could do with a more pertinent message about fire nation royal family members rejecting imperialist ideals for the sake of rejecting imperialist ideals instead of relying on family dynamics as the sole/main source for interpersonal conflict (and stand-in for morals.)

i do not like adults who hate children. i do not like adults who belittle, ridicule, and berate children for deigning to act like children. adults who think because they’ve outgrown their awkward, uninhibited smiling childhood phase, that means no one else can replay that life stage in front of them. you are all such killjoys and so disgustingly easy to annoy.
