Harp Facts for Reference
the likelihood this will reach anyone is nil, but for reference to anyone who wants to draw or write about someone playing a western harp:
High Points
the harp rests on your RIGHT shoulder
the column faces away from you
the left hand plays the low/long strings and the right hand plays the high/short strings (typically)
unless you are playing a traditional wire-strung celtic harp (and maybe Paraguayan harps? not clear on this), the nails are short because you do not play with your nails and long nails give a really unpleasant buzz
correct hand position is palms facing the strings, thumbs up
you do not play with the pinky
Playing while sitting in a chair with arms is annoying as fuck because it interferes with your elbows moving
unless you're doing an effect you pluck in the middle of the string
This got REALLY long, so more under the cut.
Parts of a Harp/How a Harp Works
Tumblr media
A harp is composed of individual strings tuned to a specific note (the number of strings varies), like the white keys on a piano, but upright. The strings resonate off a soundboard, which is a thin piece of wood. Shorter strings are higher notes, longer strings are lower notes. The soundboard is attached to a hollow body (there are holes in the back, that's how you change strings). The strings stretch between the neck and the soundboard and are under high tension. The front piece is called the column, and in a pedal harp it has a mechanical component in it. In a traditional western harp (aka folk harp, aka lever harp), the column is purely structural. The column faces away from you as you play.
In its most basic form, the harp has no mechanism to change between keys without re-tuning the strings to the appropriate accidentals (sharps or flats). This is a huge pain in the ass, and harpists have come up with two major ways to get around it: pedals and levers.
Types of Harp
Pedal Harp
Tumblr media
Most western orchestral music which includes a harp is written for the pedal harp, which has 7 pedals at the base (one for each note in the western music scale, A-G). Pedals are for changing the notes from flat to natural to sharp, so it lets you play in any key and shift keys while you're playing. This is a relatively new innovation - the modern pedal harp came on to the scene around 1800.
The column of a pedal harp needs to be straight because the mechanism which allows the pedals to shift the string tension and change the pitch runs through it.
Pedal harps are heavy. They usually have 47 strings. People who play pedal harps (not me lol) have dolly carts to carry and position them. Pedal harps are more portable than a piano but less portable than most other musical instruments. They are VERY expensive and always cost >$10k (usually more like $15-20k) because of the complexity of the pedal mechanism, but can be much, much more depending on the wood and decoration.
Folk/Lever Harp
Tumblr media
This is a folk or lever harp (mine, in fact! it's a 34-string Rees Mariposa that I love with my whole heart. please ignore the cat food in the back). The lever harp is capable of playing accidentals by flipping up the lever on the neck, which adds the exact change in tension needed to turn the string from a flat to a natural or from a natural to a sharp. This is obviously less nimble than the pedal system, since you have to take a hand out of playing commission for a second to flip a lever, but on the other hand you can switch just one string instead of all A strings or whatever. You also don't have to retune if you want to play a piece in a different key. They're very suited to playing Celtic traditional music.
Lever harps come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny 20-string lap harps to almost the size of a pedal harp, though I haven't seen any models that are bigger than 40 strings (mine has 34). They're generally much lighter and usually more portable than pedal harps. They're also much less expensive, and good ones generally live in the $2k-8k range. Definitely still a hefty chunk of change, but much less than a pedal harp.
Playing a Harp
The lever and pedal harp have very similar technique with the exception of pedal stuff for pedal harps (I don't play pedal harp so I can't comment on that). In general, the harp is tipped back and rests on the right shoulder. Most of the weight of a harp is in the base, so this isn't heavy or uncomfortable and tbh I love the feeling of the music resonating through my shoulder and body.
Pop quiz: the harp rests on what shoulder?
....
The RIGHT SHOULDER
For some reason this is wrong in like 90% of art which features a harpist. If you learn nothing about the harp from this, learn that the harp rests on the right shoulder, and I will be happy.
The right hand typically plays the melody on the higher strings and the left hand plays accompaniment on lower strings, just like the piano. You pluck strings with the flesh of the fingers, not with the nails (except in traditional wire-strung Celtic harps, which will shred your fingers, and I think Paraguayan harpists might play with the nails) or a pick. You usually need short nails as a harpist because nails + harp string = awful buzzy noise. As one can imagine, harpists have mad calluses. Harpists do not use the pinky because it's too short to reach the strings reliably.
When you play, you have your palms facing the strings and slightly tilted toward the floor, and the thumbs are up. The elbows are usually up so you have a smooth line from your elbow to your wrist (and not get wrist tendonitis). The right arm can rest lightly on the body of the harp unless you're playing on the highest strings.
You pluck in the middle of the string because it has the nicest resonance, unless you're doing an effect called près de la table (close to the soundboard), where you play right where the strings attach to the soundboard. This sounds like a guitar.
Harps have HELLA resonance, especially the lower strings, which will pretty much ring forever. You often need to actively muffle strings you don't want to be making noise anymore.
Because the wrist and forearm move together and the elbows kinda stick out, playing in a chair with armrests ranges from "really goddamn annoying" to "not possible."
Other Stuff
If you look at photos of harps, you will see some red strings and some black or blue strings. C strings are red, and F strings are blue or black. These are not training wheels, these are a visual indicator of the note. They're standard and are used by everyone from little kids playing Twinkle Twinkle (which is not a good harp tune, for the record) to professionals.
Low strings are wrapped in wire.
Fun fact, some lever harp makers make double or even triple (the Welsh are wild) strung harps which have multiple sets of strings either in parallel or crossing over. They are very cool looking and I'd love to learn to play one someday.
Harps are pretty delicate like all wood instruments. They get out of tune if you look at them wrong, and because you tune every string separately you spend a LOT of time tuning. I should probably be tuning right now.

WA12 mkII mic preamp modifications
This is something I'd intended to post last year before the fire, but hadn't gotten around to. The WA12 is a pretty well-regarded budget mic preamp, being largely a clone of an API312 topology for under $500. I'm not a deep expert on the history of API or the 312 circuit, but the broad outline is there. Warm Audio opted to go with a Melcor 1731 style opamp here, instead of copying a later API 2520, but it's socketed and you can change it (if you do, see the note down at the bottom!). To their credit, they chose a vintage 1:8 input transformer ratio, rather than the 1:10 you see on modern APIs. It's a weird choice that the 'default' mode on this preamp (tone switch off) is 1:4, whereas 1:8 (tone switch on) is the more vintage-correct configuration, but whatever. This post references the current black-panel mkII version, which seems to have a slightly different PCB and layout than the orange-panel mkII.
What mystified me about the WA12 is the bizarre input impedance spec. Warm claims that it's 600 ohms, switchable to 150 ohms with the 'tone' switch on. What?? These are ridiculous numbers -- the vast majority of mics want to see a load of 1k or higher, and most mics will suffer pretty severe signal loss with loads under 600 ohms. And as it turns out, these numbers aren't even correct. It's pretty obvious that Warm just quoted the datasheet numbers from their OEM Cinemag input transformer. Cinemag specs their transformers by the expected source impedance on the primary winding, and translates that by the square of the turns ratio to the reflected source impedance on the secondary winding. So unless the secondary of this transformer is loaded with a 10k resistor, 600/150 ohms is NOT the input impedance of the circuit. Transformers don't have a fundamental impedance. They have an impedance ratio, which is the square of the turns ratio. The load you choose for the secondary is what determines the input impedance on the primary.
The stock input impedance I measured on the WA12 mkII is 1.05k, or 600 ohms with the tone switch in. That's actually fine, much more reasonable than the quoted specs. But it still doesn't add up -- if pushing the tone switch doubles the transformer turns ratio from 1:4 to 1:8 (and increases the gain by 6dB), then I should be seeing an impedance 4x lower when it's pushed, not slightly more than half. The other thing I noticed is that the input impedance measured 1.2k with the pad on, regardless of the tone switch position. A ha -- there's a parallel load on the primary side of the transformer that's loading down the input regardless of how the transformer itself is configured (beyond just the 6.81k phantom feed resistors, which have to be there).
Turns out, Warm wired the pad switch so that the pad resistors (a balanced voltage divider of three resistors: 620-140-620 ohms, R35/37/36) are strung across the input at all times -- whether the pad is on or not. The switch just connects the input transformer to either the outside of the network (off), or to the ends of the 140-ohm resistor in the middle (on). There's no need for that. It's worth looking at the way John Hardy wires their pad switches on the M2, since it's basically the same circuit topology. Without any extra parts, and by just changing how the DPDT switch connects to the two series resistors, the Hardy ensures that the pad is completely out of circuit when it's off, and presents no additional load to the mic.
Tumblr media
I rewired the pad to according to the Hardy schematic. Boom, the input impedance was then 3.6k with the tone switch off, and 950 ohms with it on. Those numbers actually make sense. But it revealed a new problem -- the input impedance changed dramatically depending on what frequency I used to measure it (I had only used 1kHz up to this point). Specifically, it dropped to under 200 ohms at 10kHz! I felt that was unacceptable, so I started looking at the load on the transformer secondary.
(For our purposes, the load presented by the discrete opamp can be disregarded, since it's quite high, in the megohm range. I did all my measurements with the opamp removed from the socket.)
API 312s have a "zobel" network on the transformer secondary, which is there to damp the transformer's tendency to ring at high frequencies. On the 'canonical' schematic, the zobel network is a 5.1k resistor off the signal line, in series with a 220pf cap to ground. The zobel is in parallel with the secondary's load resistor -- not shown on the canonical schematic but typically found in the vast majority of old 312s -- which is typically 150k. Note that a 150k load on the secondary of a 1:8 transformer would reflect back to the primary as 150k/8^2 = 2.34k, or 150k/4^2 = 9.37k for 1:4! And in fact, 150k is what the WA12 mkII has (R13). So why was my input impedance still so much lower? The zobel network.
Turns out, Warm has a totally insane zobel network of 910 ohms (R14) in series with a 1.5nF (1500pf) capacitor (C19). That's not a zobel, that's just a straight up dump of treble frequencies. The zobel's turnover is so low that it's affecting the impedance across the entire audio band. It's honestly probably the single biggest factor in the "dark" sound of this preamp, and it's way worse with the tone switch in -- maybe that's why they called it a "tone" switch instead of an impedance switch or gain switch. The extreme values are just not necessary to get the (pretty decent) input transformer to behave.
I experimented extensively to find out what the optimal zobel network actually is for the WA12 mkII, and came up with 4.99k in series with 330pf. That's pretty similar to the canonical API spec. In fact, if there were no tone switch and this transformer could only be used at 1:8, the API values of 5.1k-220pf would be ideal. But the transformer performs significantly worse at 1:4 (again, odd that this is the default mode here), so something a little heavier was necessary. I also ended up reducing the load resistor from 150k to 100k, which helped damp ringing quite a bit. After these changes, there's near perfect square-wave performance in 1:8 (tone in) with a gentle roll-off above 20kHz and no peaking at all. At 1:4 (tone out), there's about 10% overshoot on square waves, but no ringing, and an innocuous +2dB peak at 27kHz that just adds a little bit of 'air' to the sound.
Tumblr media
Now, the input impedance is 3.5k @ 1:4 (tone out) up to the top octave, where it drops to about 3k. At 1:8 (tone in), it's 1.05k and drops to 650 ohms at 20kHz. With the pad in, it's 1.2k in all modes and at all frequencies. Very nice! I now basically always leave the tone switch in, using the vintage-correct 1:8 input ratio, which has the best frequency and time-domain response, plus better SNR. If I want a little bit of extra 'air' in exchange for slightly worse time-domain performance and lower SNR, I turn the tone switch off and use 1:4.
If you're going to the trouble of doing this work (really just moving two resistors and replacing two other resistors and one capacitor), it's also a good idea to hand-match a new pair of phantom feed resistors for best common-mode noise rejection. I found the stock 6.8k parts in the WA12 mkII to be about 1.2% apart from each other, when the IEC phantom specification says that it should be less than 0.3%. I make it a habit to match pairs of 6.81k metal film resistors to within 1 ohm (<0.03%) when I'm working on mic preamps. No need to buy parts at those tolerances -- the absolute value isn't important, just find any two in a pile that are super close to each other in value.
Notes on changing the opamp The stock Warm X1731 is fine. It really is! You're almost certainly not going to hear a difference by changing it to something else, except when driven into clipping or at the extremes of treble response. That said, I found something totally bizarre when I dropped a CA0252 opamp into the WA12. C21, the phase compensation capacitor in the opamp's feedback loop, is 12pf. 12pf is not doing anything in this circuit. The API 312 uses 120pf, 10x higher. I have no idea whether this was a board-stuffing error, a CAD/schematic typo that snuck into the BOM, or just a stupid design choice. It doesn't really pose problems with the stock 1731-style opamp, probably because that opamp has much more limited bandwidth than a 2520. But if you drop a 2520 into the circuit, you will get a huge peak of ultrasonic noise around 90kHz. This is enough to screw up your metering if you're recording at 96kHz or 192kHz ("why is my meter reading -30dBFS if I can't hear anything?"). It affects noise all the way down into the audible range, so you will also hear more background hiss with a 2520 opamp than the stock 1731, even if you can't hear the main problem up at 90kHz. The solution, of course, is just to change C21 to the API value of 120pf. You should do that anyway, even if you're not planning to change the opamp.

2022 year in review
thanks for tagging me @novasforce!
Number of stories posted to AO3: 6
Word count this year: 20,977 according to my AO3 stats, but there are probably a few thousand more in cut scenes and scrapped WIPs that didn't end up being posted.
Fandoms I wrote for: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies) and Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pairings: Every work I posted this year featured Gamora/Peter Quill and one with a dash of Gamora & Nebula. Stories with the most: – Kudos: stakes are high, water's rough (but this love is ours) – makes sense as it's the work I updated the most this year + there weren't many other new stories in the starmora tag on ao3 when it first started. – Bookmarks: same as above, surprisingly half of them are private. – Comment threads: also the same, again there being 10 chapters already def helps boost the number of comments. – Word count: once again, this love is ours sweeps with nearly 10k words.
Work(s) I'm most proud of (and why):
– tangled up with you all night: my first true attempt at writing smut. it was terrifying and probably took the longest to edit but with some help from a good friend of mine I was able to figure it out. I actually have no idea if it's good or not, guess I'll find out in a few months when going back and reading it won't give me the ick about my own writing.
– better off as lovers (not the other way around): maybe it's because it's the most recent work I've posted but I'm so excited about this. not only because I'm writing this for a friend but because for once I actually have the whole thing planned out, I just need to actually write it.
– kiss (chapter 6 of this love is ours): probably the best writing I did this year.
Work(s) I'm least proud of (and why): I wouldn't say I'm not proud of any of my works, but there are definitely a few I think are not my best if that makes sense.
Share or describe a favorite review you received: There are quite a few, I love any comment in general but my favorites tend to be the ones that respond to my rambles in author's notes or don't know much about stamora/the guardians but are still able to enjoy the story. knowing I've inspired someone to read more of my favorite team is the greatest compliment I could ever receive. I also love when Zoe remembers to comment on my works instead of containing their keyboard smashes in my DMs.
A time when writing was really, really hard: Anytime this past month. Real life and family have just been taking up the majority of my time and when I do find some to write I have zero motivation. Also again trying to write smut from a man's POV which I for some reason thought would be easier since I'm a lesbian but it was not lmao.
A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: Rocket's dialogue actually being in character in the first chapter of this love is ours. going back and rereading it I can hear bradley cooper's drunk new jersey uncle accent in my head.
A favorite excerpt of your writing: from chapter 6 of this love is ours
Gamora tells herself that this late night visit is no more than a friendly gesture towards a friend in mourning. She understands the tremendous loss Peter has suffered these past few days, and the nightmares and internal blame it brings upon someone. She also knows that despite him having told the others he would be fine earlier that night, Peter needed someone to be there for him, whether he knew that or not.  It’s a thoughtful, completely normal thing for a friend to do. So why is her heart pounding in her chest as she stands outside his quarters? Because they aren’t strictly friends anymore, there’s something else there now that Gamora’s made the “thing” a spoken one. She’s never had a romantic relationship before, hell she’d practically never had a platonic relationship before meeting him. Whatever this thing between them was is now uncharted territory, and Gamora has never been one to sail risky waters.
How did you grow as a writer this year? I actually wrote. before august it had been over five years since I had posted fanfiction and maybe three or four since I tried writing any. it's been a great outlet for me these past few months and I'm so thankful for it because I probably would have gone crazy without that.
How do you hope to grow next year: write more obviously. branch out and try posting for different fandoms to get out of my comfort zone if inspiration strikes.
Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc): the gotg hive group chat, specifically: kate, maggie, zoe, vic, and claire. I wouldn't have posted half the stuff I did this year without their support and nagging. mera who helped me tweak my smut and the rest of my friends who aren't that into gotg/marvel but still read my works and support me. taylor swift for her endless supply of title inspiration, and pete wentz for his obsession with writing songs about that sunset he watched with mikey way for inspiring better off as lovers.
Anything from your real life show up in your writing: my love for Britney Spears made a cameo or two, as well as drawing on some of my own fears of love and commitment and experiences with loss and grief to help understand the mindsets of certain characters.
Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: write whatever the fuck you want because no one else is going to cater exactly to you but yourself! don't worry about stats because they genuinely do not matter and are not a reflection of the quality of your work!! have fun!!!
Any projects you're looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I'm aiming to finish this love is ours before Vol 3 and better off as lovers by march or april. I'm so excited to start working on prompt fills for @starmoraweek2023! The release of Vol 3 will for sure be a flood of inspiration for all types of different stories whether the movie ends up being good or bad (I'm really, really hoping for good). I also want to post at least one completely bugborg centric work this year because they are criminally underrated and I want to write more sapphics! There are quite a few fandoms I'd like to give a shot at writing for, mainly sitcoms and such, but I'm not sure if I'll actually get to those.
Tag some writer's who's answers you'd like to read: @godblessgamora & @rocketnebulas ❤️

crowdfund review: Arden Season 3
I was sent an anonymous ask telling me I should look at the crowdfunding campaign for Arden season 3. and so I did. and I definitely have some thoughts, though I'm sorry it took me this long to get them down because things have changed a bit since then (I've already had to adjust wording and update images twice because I'm slow).
here is the link to their campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/arden-s3-midsummer-in-new-york-city#/
as well as their prior campaign to fund season 2, as I will be referring to it at several point: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/arden-season-2-a-town-called-elsinore#/
let's get started then.
First Glance, Let's Talk About Goals
Tumblr media
so. that's a big number. $26,000 USD.
if you read my other crowdfunding review for Among the Stacks, I talked in-depth about how what you are asking for defines the expectations people have as well as what you need to make sure you provide. this is something to keep in mind as we look through this campaign, particularly because this is a big ask from a production that is established and wanting to appear very professional to justify this high of a goal.
let's compare this with their season 2 campaign. while you can't see the goal on old successful campaigns, it IS mentioned in that campaign video as being $6,000. that campaign wound up raising $17,167 from 461 backers, but the initial ask was VERY low in comparison to the current.
NOTE: there is a notably different set of numbers beneath these saying it hit $15,676 from 409 backers on Feb 19, 2020. I am not familiar enough with the intricacies of Indiegogo as a platform to be able to identify what this means exactly, but my guess is that that was the originally achieved goal when the campaign ended and maybe it has/had a feature where for a short time after the campaign you could still contribute? genuinely unsure, but we'll go with the number that the page highlights rather than this one.
I think it's also worth noting that this date of February 19th, 2020 was RIGHT before the pandemic hit, so people may have had more spare income such that this project could get $10k+ over its goal. I don't know if the overwhelming success of that campaign impacted the current one's goal being so high, but if it did that was probably a mistake because people just don't have that kind of money to spare anymore.
this campaign goal is set as "Flexible", as in they will get whatever is pledged no matter what, and I don't really have a problem with that usually, BUT. I will touch on why it feels a little bit different here towards the end of this post.
but let's hold off on digging too deep into those numbers just yet, we've got some stuff between us and the budget. there will be some.... thoughts in that section though, don't you worry.
The Video
2 minutes and 10 seconds is a length I can get onboard with. in comparison to their prior campaign video (4 minutes) it looks much cleaner and less amateur than the home-video style live action they used for the season 2 one, which I think is necessary for a campaign that asks this much. granted, it still feels very budget with just still graphics and stock images so I'm not particularly impressed by it visually.
the whole thing largely focuses on broadly covering the mysteries of seasons 1 and 2, interspersed with accolades and recognition, before giving the elevator pitch for the mystery of season 3.
as an aside, they tout their first season "being nominated at the Audio Verse Awards" on equal footing with Forbes calling them one of the 10 best fiction podcasts of 2018. all of us know the AVAs are just a "pay to get a nomination" thing, probably the least impressive thing they could be bragging about for anyone in the know. I have thoughts on that whole AVA thing as well, I'll probably put them together into a small post here soon.
but back to the video content. apart from addressing "people of Indiegogo" at the very start, it takes until the 1:38 mark for the video to even get to the point that it is telling you about a crowdfund and ask for support. if you were potentially unfamiliar with the show but stumbled across this campaign, it does a good job at selling you on the mysteries of the previous two seasons without giving away too much about what happens besides a romance between the leads.
the video ends with a call to action to donate, even if it's only a small amount, and then shows on screen as well as reads and spells the url to go to. good stuff, worth including for sure.
however, it feels like there's a disconnect in what the video is expecting from you as a viewer.
if I am finding this for the first time and know nothing about the show, it's a really great elevator pitch for me to add it to my podcast backlog.
if I am already a fan of the show, it just tells me about the existence of a campaign.
there's no mention of the campaign dates so there is no sense of urgency for me to check out the show immediately or go right to the campaign. there's no mention of the goal for me to get a sense of how much my contribution could positively impact it (I do think that with a goal this high there is less opportunity for people to really feel like their contribution is making a difference compared to a 3-5k goal, but still).
the video is not about the campaign at all, and that is kind of an obvious problem.
while the video for their season 2 campaign was 4 minutes with poor production quality and really iffy audio for trying to sell me on an audio medium, it does so much more for what it was trying to achieve. just about half of the runtime is dedicated to talking about the campaign goal, what it will go towards, the exclusive rewards, and why your support matters and makes an impact. based on just these videos, I would have been way more likely to check out and support Arden season 2 than I am to do the same for season 3.
I wish they had found a happy medium between the original low quality, but very charming live action and the new joke-corporate, but not particularly endearing, tone of the current. maybe they'll get it right for season 4.
NOTE - The Update:
right now there is a pretty significant update at the top of the campaign, I am jumping over it for the moment and we will touch on the contents in the "Budget" section where it makes more sense to.
They're Baaaaaack....
it was their joke, not mine.
this first section is pretty light overall, not getting into their sales pitch right off the bat, but informing or reminding the reader that the series is well-regarded by both critics and normal listeners and has already delivered on a successful campaign in the past.
this is very good to focus on upfront here, ESPECIALLY because people will go right from seeing the huge $26k goal to reading this and you have to justify that price tag immediately to not lose them. it highlights the stretch goals and extra content that they were able to produce before going on to say that they want to be even more ambitious for this next season, so that if you were to know or look up that the previous campaign raised about $17k you could maybe extrapolate and justify the nearly $10k increase from that amount being asked for here. it does direct us to the budget breakdown section lower on the page at the mention of wanting to provide proper compensation, which is good.
it ends with another call to action, inviting you to keep reading. this also recognizes that people will be looking at this first section to decide whether they want to continue reading.
overall, good section, but I don't know why I have to keep telling people to include links in here! you should want to direct me to your website, podcast feed, social media, etc. so I can find more information if I'm curious.
Season 3 Rundown
honestly I don't really have anything to say about this section. it's very similar to the plot tease from the campaign video with a little bit more details on the mystery. it's written to get existing fans excited and it probably does that just fine.
so let's move on to more of the meat.
Perks and Rewards
luckily for me, this section is literally just a text version of the different reward tiers with more detail. I am personally very grateful since this means I can skip covering the options on their own altogether because to anyone looking to back this section is very clearly highlighted covering all the details. thank you for giving me less work <3
to that point, I think for any kind of campaign that mostly focuses on digital goods it is really good to have this kind of text breakdown. for physical product focused crowdfunding you will have a lot more tangible images to show off to get people excited. in digital goods we are working with hypotheticals a lot of the time, especially in a story-based medium where you can't take a screenshot of your script to show off that it exists without giving out spoilers to the story you want to tell.
I will briefly say that I like the consistency of the tier images. the fake corporate employee badge is a fun format (though it means nothing to me as an outsider why it is relevant to the fake-true-crime angle of this series). it's also very easily customized to each tier without being a bunch of work to have unique images, which is less exciting, but also much less work.
Tumblr media
I do also think it's worth mentioning that NONE of the tiers have a limit to the number of backers that can sign up for them, including the really high up ones that could cause trouble if too many people picked them (like the wrap party invite and some of the more involved physical goods). I think having restrictions on some of them is good for convincing people to go for them early because they're afraid of missing their chance, but also it can mean less work in terms of eventually needing to mail physical goods or coordinate personalized benefits.
but anyway, let's look at these tiers:
NOTE: every tier includes everything from the prior tiers, which I won't point out for all of them.
$1 FRIEND OF THE POD - aka the tip jar. honestly there's nothing offensive about this kind of tier existing, though I sometimes wonder if there's a point to it. but it does have 2 backers at writing so clearly some people appreciate it being an option.
$5 THE GOOD PEOPLE - honestly this tier has a lot of bang for your buck, like seriously for just $5 these are good rewards, but let's go over them individually:
early episodes - this is great, but what exactly does "Be the first on the block to hear S3 of Arden!" mean? I brought this up before for the ATS campaign, but if you just say "early" and don't quantify that you could be talking a week or a day or just an hour and I would have no clue. depending on what "early" means here I would be more or less excited by this reward. granted, this is the first tier with a real benefit which means that everyone above this point will also get this, so it isn't as though you are trying to use it to sell your $25 and up levels. however, the mention of a Patreon in a few sentences does make me wonder whether this is also a benefit patrons will have who don't back the campaign. potentially something worth clarifying.
special thanks in the credits - boy howdy that is gonna be a lot of names you have to figure out how to read and where to put with this also included in every tier from here up. as of right now that is 102 backers and it hasn't even hit 20% funded.
exclusive backer/Patreon minisodes - this is the tier that made me wonder if early episodes would also be a Patreon included perk, which I think its fine either way but worth making clear. I do think that the minimum quantity of minisodes should be specified, if only because "and MORE" is extremely vague. I think at this low of a tier it wouldn't be a big deal if it was only one more than the 2 explicitly listed ones, but specificity is nice even here.
$10 WHEYFACE INDUSTRIES EMPLOYEE - everything from the $5 plus a few small extras:
personalized digital employee badge - honestly a very cute digital reward that seems to go with the whole "Wheyface Industries" thing. this is an example of really good branding tbh, everyone should try to have something like this. we also have a good idea of how these will look because of the tier header images.
exclusive audio commentaries - so this both gives access to season 1 and 2 commentaries as well as the new ones for season 3. I am once again curious if this is something Patreon supporters also receive?
exclusive discord access - I feel like a broken record, but again is this a discord just for crowdfunding backers or is it also for Patreon subs? to be honest for this one I think having both is to the benefit because it means a larger more active community. some discords feel like they just exist because they're supposed to and have barely any activity, which would feel like a letdown if that was part of your incentive for doubling your $5 tier pledge.
customizable digital icons - these are explicitly donor exclusive and honestly another neat idea for digital content. they seem to have a good designer and a distinct style of these things, though seeing a few examples would be nice here.
$25 WHEYFACE ADVENTURER - here's our first physical rewards added onto everything prior:
buttons and stickers - would really love to see some mock-ups or designs here. I would also like to know with more specifics how many buttons and stickers are we talking about?
digital copy of "Escape from Wheyface Radio" TTRPG - we actually do get to see the cover of this in the video/image carousel at the top of the campaign, which I think sets the tone for it pretty well as comedic action (I'm assuming). honestly a good reward, though I'm curious if this has ever been offered anywhere else (i.e. in their merch store or to Patreon supporters).
$50 WHEYCON BADGE HOLDER - more physical and digital goods:
digital dossier of in-universe season 3 prep materials - a very fitting perk for a true-crime inspired show, probably adds some genuinely cool depth to excitement for and using along with the season as it airs.
linocut print - I think the mystery here of "an important location" is fine in terms of being vague. I think you could talk about the colors and size though just to have something a little more tangible for people to get excited about
digital soundtrack across all seasons - if you have a show with original music you should absolutely be making your soundtrack available in some aspect. good reward that is easy to distribute and deliver and will likely have the added bonus of some custom cover art for each of the 3 volumes.
$100 WHEYCON ARTS PATRON - more physical and more exclusive story content:
physical Wheyface Industries ID badge - very logical step up from the digital reward from earlier. I will point out that it does not say whether this is also customized, which considering the added cost of every single badge needing to be unique is probably not the case. but to some there might be an assumption that it is based on the earlier reward and that should be clarified sooner to avoid disappointment.
in-universe article from new character - this feels on the level of the digital dossier in terms of being content that the mystery solving fans would get a lot of value from. good addition, though I would be curious how much of the information will feel unique against the digital dossier.
Andy Wheyface diary - honestly I'm a little confused by what this entails. I'm assuming it's digital, though it doesn't specify. but in terms of format is it going to have a scrapbook journal kind of feel or feel more like someone opened a google doc and started recounting their day? doesn't appeal to me but I'm also not their target here.
$250 WHEYCON VIP - the big physical tier:
professionally printed dossier - the only specifics here about this printed version of the digital good is that it will be "gorgeous", but I think it would be nice to have a little more detail and maybe even a teasing pic of how it will look.
excluive t-shirt - broken record, but show me a mock-up! please! I don't wear a lot of t-shirts, would I even like the design???
behind-the-scenes discussion with Arden composers etc. - very cool if you love the show's music, and probably pretty interesting even if it isn't something you notice that much.
$500 WHEYFACE INDUSTRIES ADVERTISER - the big bucks personal:
full-sized poster collection - 2 examples are given, but if I'm thinking about reserving wall space for something or wanting to buy frames I need to know exactly how many to be expecting and what they classify as "full-size". I've bought so many posters that are just mildly different dimensions and that really matters if you want to frame them, which I assume many people who are spending this much would to best preserve and show them off.
write and produce your own custom advertisement with the Arden team - honestly this is an extremely cool idea that again seems to fit well into the Arden universe. sound like good bang for the buck just based on this alone.
$1000 WHEYFACE INDUSTRIES BOARD - exclusive event and autographed scripts:
season 3 digital wrap party invitation - these things always sound like they'd be awkward to me since everyone else has a relationship with each other, but I also totally understand why this would be an enticing reward for people. definitely worth the price to a lot of people I'm sure.
complete printed collection of autographed season 3 scripts - I know printed scripts (especially autographed) is something a lot of people enjoy having for their favorite shows, no complaints about this reward. tho it might be nice to specify whether it'll be bound specially in any way or if they'll arrive as loose sheets held together with a binder clip.
I think overall these tiers are really good, though I would like to see mock-ups or visuals for some of the promised rewards (particularly the physical ones like a t-shirt or poster examples). I would also like to commend Arden for not selling an "Executive Producer" credit as part of the rewards, I will continue to point out how bullshit those are until people stop doing it.
but let's move onto a big one.
The Budget
IMPORTANT NOTE: so as I was putting this post together (was pulled away from it several times for real world non-anon responsibilities etc.) the campaign posted an update. on March 30th, they added the following section at the top:
Hey, folks! We have some awesome news. Thanks to some additional funding which has come in, WE NOW ONLY NEED TO RAISE $6000 TO GREENLIGHT A SIX-EPISODE SEASON 3. And as of 3/30, we are very close to hitting that goal! [I foolishly deleted the image, but it was basically the same as the one below. The only differences were no "GREENLIGHT ACHIEVED" text, the blue label saying "MARCH 2023", and the progress bar showing that it had made it to $4125 of the $6000 target. Beneath is smaller white text that reads "Help us make Arden Season 3! $6000 raised on IndieGoGo will guarantee a six-episode season, with more episodes the more we raise!" and then beneath that the shortened url to the campaign.] WE ARE ONLY $1875 AWAY FROM GREENLIGHTING SEASON 3. Every $2000 past $6000 will add an additional episode. HELP US GET THERE TODAY!
on April 2nd, it had been updated to the following:
Tumblr media
Thanks to some additional funding and your donations, we have now raised enough to produce at least six episodes of Arden Season 3! Every $2000 raised from now until the end of the campaign will add an additional episode to the season. All rewards will be fulfilled. And look forward to Arden Season 3: Midsummer in New York City - coming to your earballs this fall/winter.
I am not going to touch on this just yet, because I think we need to go over the budget breakdown first before we can assess it with this new information.
Budget Breakdown Breakdown
fun fact: the Arden team definitely saw my original response to the anonymous ask telling me about the campaign (or a similar critique elsewhere) calling out their lack of numbers in their budget section. I know this because it has since been rectified to include actual percentages on the chart itself as well as details of the number and approx length of episodes, two things that were definitely missing before. I don't have a screenshot of that section from before, I wasn't ready to dive into another one of these at the time, but it wouldn't be fair of me to show those anyway now as a "gotcha" when clearly they are open to feedback. I don't know if they read my prior post because there are still issues here that I think need addressing, but honestly it's a huge improvement from what there was. they did not however update anything but the image with specific numbers, which isn't ideal.
Tumblr media
someone needed to put a little more time into this graphic because the labels are not super readable and for "studio recording" the number is almost completely obscured by the label beneath. we will be referring to these numbers for the rest of the section as this is the only place they are specified.
let's start at the end because it provides some very valuable context:
"Total, we have budgeted a cast and crew of 35 people to produce thirteen episodes with runtimes of 45 min to an hour, in addition to the additional expenses listed in operating expenses."
so that means we are talking about $26k to cover 9.75 hrs to 13 hrs of content, 35 people (26 of whom are cast according to this section), and an unnamed amount of contracted work potentially for commissioned additional art and music. this also doesn't include how much additional time and effort would be devoted to minisodes, digital content, and fulfilling backer rewards, so we can't really factor that in obviously except to just assume that funds for each of those would likely be equally distributed across the average cost. because of this, I'm going to just have to ignore them entirely as a separate thing, especially since those costs will be a bit more fluid until it's clear exactly how many backers will require physical goods fulfillment.
to break that big number down on a per-episode basis, we are looking at $2,000-$2,667 per produced hour of content, or a more round average of $2k per episode. obviously not every person will be directly involved with the creation of an episode, either because music is used in multiple places, a character doesn't appear in every one, and some expenses are one-offs.
but let's take that $2k average in mind as we hit the descriptors for each of the segments in this chart. I'll be using the provided %s to calculate the amount of overall budget and per episode budgets allocated to each.
CAST - 44% - $880/ep, $11,440 total
we know this is 26 actors total, only the main two characters are specifically named. it is likely that some of these roles are extremely minor and only appear a few times at most, so we can't really break this $880/episode number down any further. if it were meant to accommodate all 26 performers being in every episode that would be $33.84 on average, but I don't think that accurately reflects the breakdown in any way.
DIRECTORS - 9% - $180/ep, $2340 total
here we actually have more to work with in terms of figuring out the pay. I will be upfront that I am less sure of what a fair wage is for directing work, numbers on that are much harder to find than for sound designers or actors.
this section says "We are currently budgeted for three directors each working five days of recording." which could mean one of a few things. either there are 5 days of recording TOTAL and all three directors are present for all of that time, there are 15 days total and each director is in charge of a third of them, or a mix of some day with multiple and some days without. it doesn't really matter that much to the budget aspect to know which it is, unless there is a "head"/"assistant" kind of dynamic for days with multiple that might impact their rates. but let's just assume that it will be equal pay and the number of days doesn't really matter. that's leaves us with $780 total for each of the three directors across the full season (though keeping in mind the full number of episodes is 13 and not perfectly divisible by 3).
SOUND DESIGNERS - 17% - $340/ep, $4420 total
this section is also budgeted for 3 sound designers, though it's unclear if that is broken down for each episode with one doing the vocal cut while another does soundscaping and effects with one in charge of mastering or something. that is I think more likely than having the episodes fully split between the three because that could result in it sounding less consistent between episodes. I'm not sure exactly how good this compensation is when split like that, but if it were a single designer doing an episode I do think $340 is decent enough.
COMPOSER - 8% - $160/ep, $2080 total
I give a per ep estimate not because I think it actually provides value here, but just as a comparison point to the other roles.
however, I do think it's worth noting that we do have information about the amount of music from prior seasons to compare to, thanks to the digital soundtrack reward from the prior section. that boasted "60 tracks of music from Seasons 1 and 2 alone", meaning we can assume around 30 tracks will be made for season 3. this is probably not entirely accurate, there's some give and take for reusing music from previous seasons. that comes out to about $69/track (nice). I don't know what the standard rate is for musicians in this kind of work to be honest, but I would assume this is at least comparable to what the composer has been paid in the past or else they probably wouldn't be returning for the third season.
GRAPHIC DESIGN - 1% - $20/ep, $260 total
again, I don't think the per episode estimate is necessarily valuable here, unless there is unique cover art for each episode which I don't think is the case because $20 for that plus any additional graphic design work doesn't seem to be a fair wage.
STUDIO RECORDING - 4% - $80/ep, $1040 total
I think this speaks for itself honestly. the price will be the price that the studio space sets. in the section about the directors it was revealed that there are 5 days of recording, which as I noted could actually be 5-15 days total. however, here it only states "a few days of in-person recording with our core ensemble", so it probably only covers a portion of that total time. whatever the case, not much can be done to lower this and I'm sure they feel the benefit of spending this money for that kind of recording space is worth it.
OPERATING EXPENSES - 17% - $340/ep, $4420 total
to be honest, $4420 feels pretty low for everything they say is in this bucket. some of these things we can't really put a price tag on like rewards fulfillment without knowing how many people are going to be receiving those. especially when considering some of the higher cost and higher effort rewards like the personalized commercials. things like shipping costs also need to be considered (unless they have it setup to charge shipping separately, I do know that IndieGoGo offers this option) and just generally compensating people for the time and materials putting the packages together.
we can probably assume that the mention of SAG (something i covered quite a bit in my last crowdfund review) is for the annual base fee of $227.42 (not counting the additional 1.575% of earnings that have to be paid). it's unlikely this is something that all the actors have, but I would assume at least the two leads do, which alone accounts for about $500 of this total amount.
and that's not counting the misc stuff like the business taxes and licensing fees for any software being used.
there's also a very weird omission here, like seriously weird. where is the funding for the writing? my best guess is that it has been wrapped into "operating expenses", but to be honest that doesn't feel like an actual explanation, so I'm a bit suspicious that writing is not being compensated at all.
I did talk about this on the ATS crowdfunding post, but even if it's your passion project to write and make this thing, you should still be compensated for the time you put in. the fact it isn't mentioned at all is very strange.
I also think we should have larger conversations about how much more we are paying cast than crew. in this budget they have set aside 44% for the cast, with only 26% for the directors and sound designers (not to mention the missing writers I pointed out). this is a BIG disparity when you consider that directors are going to be present every time actors are (with the exception of small role that might be asynchronously recorded) and sound designers will be spending at least twice as much time as that when you factor in the dialogue cut, fitting in soundscapes, music, and effects, and general mastering of the episode.
[the stretch goals should be here, at the end of the budget section, but they are instead in the FAQ so we'll touch on them there]
a note on Patreon: I do also think that for shows that also have an active Patreon/Ko-fi/other monetary support avenue, that is valuable information to provide here. if that's only bringing in $250 per month, it might not feel worth it to address it in your budget section, but I think people can get suspicious about where money you "already have" is going when you start asking for more. I did not look up their accounts to see what they are currently making, I don't think it's relevant to my judgement of what this campaign is looking to provide, BUT if you were to tell me that that was how the writers had been getting compensated for the work they already put in that would ease my concerns on that front. stuff like that is good to know and again, when you ask for this much money people are going to be weird about it, and not unreasonably so.
Let's Talk About These 3/30 and 4/1 Funding Updates
now these both answered and raised some more questions.
needless to say, that portion of it is no longer entirely necessary, but I do think that there are some valuable points pertaining to stretch goals (and the absence of them) which can provide some value to shows looking to crowdfund.
so I have kept that section in below and done a small bit of editing, but mostly unchanged from my initial thoughts on the matter.
let's start with the March update:
Hey, folks! We have some awesome news. Thanks to some additional funding which has come in, WE NOW ONLY NEED TO RAISE $6000 TO GREENLIGHT A SIX-EPISODE SEASON 3. And as of 3/30, we are very close to hitting that goal! [I accidentally deleted the image, but it was basically the same as the April updated one. HELP US GET THERE TODAY!
so there is some VERY important information revealed here.
first is that they've received additional funding outside of the campaign, which honestly is great for them and somewhat needed for a goal this large.
I touched on it fairly in-depth in a now-deleted section I wrote about the lack of stretch goals, before discovering they did exist but are hidden away in the FAQ. I talked about how the high campaign goal and lack of stretch goals was likely indicative of them having been wrapped up into that $26k number, which I still think is true to an extent. I think this announcement confirms that theory, and is actually in-line with the suggestion I made in that original section to pursue that kind of financial support in addition to a lowered goal.
however, I think the lack of detail here is really not great. for one, I'm making an assumption of some kind of external support, which is not necessarily what happened in the most direct sense. there could be caveats and stipulations attached to this money that might impact whether someone would support the campaign. maybe it's a grant from an arts supporting organization, maybe they've sold the TV rights to Arden in exchange, or maybe someone has just come into a lot of money from the day job. whatever the case, more details can be provided without revealing too much, i.e. "we've partnered with a network" or "received a grant to help fund season 3 should we meet this $6k goal" or something akin to that.
transparency is a good thing, especially when it comes to mystery money and me questioning why despite that you did not lower your $26,000 goal.
further, we have no idea how much extra funding was secured, so at this point it becomes unclear what amount of the goal is "extra" and what is required for the entire season. some math can help us extrapolate based on the $2k for each additional episode number we are given.
$6,000 (6 episodes) + $2,000 x 7 episodes (based on 13 episode number from budget section) = $20,000 total
so did they secure $6,000 in funding? at this point who knows.
the second thing that this reveals is that apparently there is a version of season 3 that could work with only 6 episodes total, which is not even half of the marketed 13 episode season length they claimed to be aiming for in the actual budget section! this is a pretty massive discrepancy with no kinds of qualifiers about "we'll be able to do the story, but it will be paired down and abridged in some parts" vs "the other 7 episodes are basically filler that could be cut". I feel like I don't need to explain the difference between these two sentences and why the first is superior in every way in terms of how people view your production as a whole.
okay, third thing. the goal arguably could have been for six episodes from the start with plenty of stretch goals for adding episodes and more. now, with the additional context of our budget calculations, this brings up some significant questions.
if we are to go with the average episode cost of $2,000 that we estimated, this means that $6k on it's own is not enough to actually make 6 full episodes. however, from our earlier calculation, we estimated that they maybe received $6,000 in funding, which actually solves the potential issue of underpaying themselves for the creation of those now guaranteed 6 episodes, which is a good thing. costs are costs and don't go down just because you have less money (unfortunately for all of us living in capitalism).
without this outside funding, this brings the actual (assumed) minimum goal to $12,000. this is SIGNIFICANTLY less than the current goal (though still higher than a lot of other AD campaigns).
so yeah, quite a bit of important information here.
what this update doesn't answer at all: are minisodes still going to be made? this already feels like barely enough for the core content based on their own operating costs, so that gets called into question for me and isn't addressed.
another thing that occurs to me: are there going to be some roles that are still getting full or near full compensation? I'm mostly thinking about the graphic designer and the composer, since the extent of their episode-by-episode contributions vs the overall season isn't as clear cut as it is for actors or sound designers or even studio space costs. I'm also curious how this impacts the fact there are 3 directors involved, that's a lot of voices for as little as 6 episodes total.
and now let's look at what else was revealed by the April one, which arguably has the most off-putting and concerning sentence in the whole campaign:
Thanks to some additional funding and your donations, we have now raised enough to produce at least six episodes of Arden Season 3! Every $2000 raised from now until the end of the campaign will add an additional episode to the season. All rewards will be fulfilled. And look forward to Arden Season 3: Midsummer in New York City - coming to your earballs this fall/winter.
so. what is concerning to me is the sentence "All rewards will be fulfilled", because there is a BIG implication to how that is stated.
what this tells me is that up until this point, the backers had absolutely no guarantee of actually getting the rewards of the tier they may have chosen, despite this being a flexible campaign meaning that they would still have been giving the money in part for those rewards.
so, there are three interpretations of what this means:
if they hadn't hit $6k, season 3 wouldn't be made to any extent
honestly there's nothing to imply that this would have been the case in the campaign's wording, so I don't think this was the reality of the situation.
2. if they hadn't hit $6k, season 3 would still be made to some extent but some rewards just wouldn't be delivered
I have read through this campaign several times, and there was NEVER any implication that backers wouldn't receive the promised rewards, not at any point before this April update. and that is a big fucking problem if that was up in the air. I know we'd like to think that if someone was willing to shell out money to support a thing they will still want to without obvious rewards, but for some people we're talking about hundreds of dollars that maybe they could only justify spending for the promise of physical or otherwise unique rewards. if all it took was wanting to give support with nothing in return, people would just select to donate without a tier.
the rewards are not the point, but that doesn't mean they aren't really important to the campaign.
3. if they hadn't hit $6k, there would be refunds to some extent for backers whose rewards wouldn't be delivered
this feels unlikely considering they wouldn't have made much to begin with if we're at this point, but it is the more charitable version of the prior option.
but none of these are ideal and as far as I knew 2 days ago, none of them were even on the table! what kind of trust does that foster with your community to not have been upfront with the realities of the campaign? if they hadn't hit this point and one of these, or some unknown 4th option in which rewards wouldn't have been fulfilled as implied happened, why would I ever want to give this team money again? crowdfunding for season 4 would be basically off the table based on this.
this is what we're talking about when people say they want transparency, all of these questions brought up by these updates ARE important! it is on the Arden team to provide those answers as best they can because this is not some faceless megacorp doing behind the scenes decision-making that might trickle down to individual consumers. this is a small team that is seemingly passionate about their project and cares about fostering their community. and these are exactly the kinds of things that hurt that.
adjacent to stretch goals, a campaign having milestones is also a great way to drive engagement. and Arden does have these. on their twitter only it seems. I've heard from a lot of people (and seen it myself) that twitter is not really a great way to connect to listeners. it's a good networking tool among creators, but especially as more people leave twitter it isn't getting the reach that some people think it does. I can tell by looking at their statistics that even when a post is getting a lot of "views" (how twitter is tracking that and whether it's accurate are up for debate) it is only getting a couple of likes or retweets, or a single comment if they're lucky. I've actually seen this for a lot of AD accounts, I don't think this is an Arden problem.
BUT, that means they need to be promoting these milestones outside of this little sphere of twitter! I didn't go searching other social media, I only looked at the twitter because it came up very early in the google results, but these things should be captured ON the campaign! at time of writing, the next benchmark is at $3900, something they are only $59 away from. if I came to the campaign and saw that we were close to getting some extra content or information I would be much more inclined as a fan to immediately pledge rather than putting it off. this stuff can seal the deal and turn a scroller into a donator.
Other Ways To Help
nothing wrong with this section except that once again you should be providing links to stuff like your website and podcast feed. at least there are links to the Twitter and Tumblr accounts, with the carrot of winning prizes for paying attention to those.
FAQ
only two small sections here, but I don't think this section was utilized well generally to be honest.
all of this feels like information that should have been in the main body of the campaign. a lot of people don't even look at the FAQ because to be honest you should be using this section as a TLDR for the campaign rather than giving unique information.
When Will Season 3 Launch?
here is the reveal of a planned late summer/early fall 2023 release, information that I think would be better suited a part of the actual body of the campaign.
additionally there is mention of something known as "WheyCon" which was alluded to earlier in the campaign, but still unclear what exactly it is for the uninitiated. I assume it is a little studio event where they'll make announcements and maybe have some special stuff like a livestream. either way it is unclear and doesn't even provide a clue of where to watch for information about it.
Do you have stretch goals?
so I'm gonna be honest, I wrote this whole thing before checking the FAQ, including an entire section about why you should have stretch goals and my theory that the stretch goals were actually just rolled into the funding goal because they were fully committed to making them.
the existence of this proves me wrong.
I've salvaged what I can of it, but let's look at what is actually said here:
$27,500 - recorded version of DAY IN THE LIFE OF ANDY WHEYFACE, exclusive to donors
this $1500 above the goal is probably enough to cover this, since they probably wouldn't need as many actors or as in-depth of sound design based on the diary format.
$30,000 - special recorded Art Gallery tour with Bea and Brenda
the way that "Art Gallery" is non-specific and capitalized makes me think this is a fictional gallery within the world of Arden, but either way this is a clever use of the setting and theme of this season for something unique. I don't know how interesting it would be, but still.
at $2,500 above the prior stretch goal that probably covers the costs for something about the length of an episode, if not longer since a lot of guided art gallery tours are over an hour in length.
$35,000 - series of minisodes set behind the scenes of the Julie Capsom film
curious how many is considered a "series", but it's a logical follow-up to the prior campaign's minisode stretch goals and it's clear they enjoy making them. I think the "film" is a bit of in-universe content they've already made and is apparently popular enough for them to be interested in expanding on it.
this only being $5k more than the previous tier implies it'll be a short series (3+ episodes, much shorter length) which is probably fine enough.
$100,000 - purchase the audio drama rights to Stephen King's Under the Dome so they can say the show takes place in that universe
ngl this means nothing to me, I'm unfamiliar with that story or the potential significance of it here. but it certainly is a goal I guess, though I'm not sure this is quite how that kind of copyright stuff works.
all well and fine, but these shouldn't be here. they should be in the main section with more details. stretch goals exist as a tool to get people excited to exceed the goal, and can have an impact on how much they are willing to give extra to achieve that goal. they should be proudly advertised as part of the campaign, the same way that the donation tiers are. this is where you want people to go "wait, what might they do???", something I think the final stretch goal does actually do because of how impressive it sounds. you gotta use that temptation or it may as well not exist formally.
Closing Thoughts
Use the "Updates" Section
this is a small general note, but I found it weird that instead of using the built-in "Updates" functionality to post about the funding updates they instead just put it in the body of the campaign.
there's a couple reasons I think this is probably a mistake, the most obvious being that your supporters will get emails when you add an official update like this, but not if you just edit the campaign text. these updates could be driving your supporters back to up their pledges to help you reach your milestones. plus it keeps you on their minds so they keep posting to support you and maybe helping you gain new backers.
Funding Transparency Please
being vague about your "additional funding" just feels kinda sus, like there's a reason you don't want to share the details...

these are a great way to drive engagement. and Arden does have these. on their twitter only it seems.
I didn't go searching other social media, I only looked at the twitter because it came up very early in the google results, but these things should be captured ON the campaign! at time of writing, the next benchmark is at $3900, something they are only $59 away from. if I came to the campaign and saw that we were close to getting some extra content or information I would be much more inclined as a fan to immediately pledge rather than putting it off. this stuff can seal the deal and turn a scroller into a donator.
overall I have questions and concerns but not a horrible campaign.
it was, however, unable to convince me as a prospective donor that all this money is necessary, especially in light of the updates. I think the overall lack of transparency is concerning as a whole though.
okay that's it, I'm tired of having to look through and revise this.
best of luck to Arden on however many episodes they get to make <3

five times you pull tiktok pranks on him, and one time he pulls one on you , jesperi kotkaniemi
note, this is dedicated to @quietblues because you're amazing cam, and i love you. i also had to include a little nod to "red (taylor's version). the trend where someone's asking to breakup with their partner so they can experience red in full. i love taylor swift. that's all. pair, jesperi kotkaniemi x reader summary, five times you pull tiktok pranks on him, and one time he pulls one on you, or all the times y/n pulls tiktok pranks jesperi. warnings, none word count, 1479 words
Tumblr media
(gif not mine)
The one thing everyone knew about your boyfriend, Jesperi, was that he was extremely goofy. He was a silly person, which was why it was it was so easy to pull all kinds of pranks on him.
He, of course, got you back with pranks of his own, many he didn't post, but pranks you both enjoyed.
-
one, "the salt prank"
You set the camera up and poured salt onto the spoon. You gathered some soup on the spoon, making sure the salt was covered up by the soup.
"Hey, KK?" You asked.
"What?" He asked.
"Can you come taste my soup?" You asked.
You heard his footsteps and saw him walk into the kitchen, holding your dog in his arms. He took the spoon and gulped it down.
You watched his face, and watched as he winced at the salty taste, “Wow…” He swallowed and coughed, “It’s, uh, it’s a lot of salt.”
“Really? So, it’s good?”
“Yeah, baby, it’s good.” He nodded.
That was one thing about Jesperi, he would do whatever he could to make sure you were smiling and happy.
“Okay, stop lying.” You laughed.
He quickly set your dog, Luna, down and grabbed a glass, quickly filling it with water and gulping it down, “Oh, thank God. That was really salty.”
You laughed, pointing to your phone that was sitting up and still recording. He rolled his eyes and picked Lulu back up, “Come on, Lulu. Mom’s being a bully.”
canesfan awe that’s so cute!!
user935294 he lied to protect her feelings 🥺😭
jesperisbiggesfan they’re so cute 🥰

two, "oil change"
"So, I got my oil changed, you know?"
"Yeah." Jesperi nodded, running his hand along Lulu's head.
"I think you'll be really proud of me." You told him with a smile, taking a sip of your drink.
"Oh yeah?" He asked with a bright smile, looking up from his phone.
"Well, they said I got a good deal."
"What was the "good deal"?" He asked.
"Well, I only got it for $400..." He dropped his phone and looked over at you, his jaw slack.
"$400?" He asked.
"Yeah." You nodded.
"Four-hundred-Y/N." He rubbed his forehead.
"Yeah? They told me it was a good deal." You shrugged.
"A good deal? Baby, they robbed you. Where'd you go?" He picked his phone back up, ready to call.
"It was just down the street." You answered.
"Down the street? At Tires Expo? They don't even do oil changes."
"The guy there told me it was a good deal." You shrugged.
"You were scammed." He began searching for the number.
You laughed, shaking your head. He looked up at you confused. You only pointed over to your phone. He shook his head, playfully rolling his eyes.
"So, you didn't get a $400 oil change?"
user39572 lmaoo kk was ready to beat up the tires expo guy 😂😂
caniacfan2037 you can tell he's so proud of her
svechaho i love them so much

three, "selling the dog"
Jesperi was in the driver's seat in the Starbucks drive-thru, "So, I got a DM from this guy on Instagram..."
"What about?" Jesperi asked, glancing over at you before looking back at the road.
"They saw Lulu on Instagram, and offered to buy her for 10k." You told him.
Jesperi nodded along, looking lost and confused, "Okay? And?"
"And I told him we'd think about it."
"Think about what? Selling our dog? She's like our kid. You really thinking of selling our kid?" He asked.
"Well, 10k is a lot of money." You noted.
"Yeah, but we don't need money, babe. We have money, we have more than enough. We don't need more." He told you, getting defensive and serious.
"But-"
"No, we are not selling Lulu." Jesperi shook his head.
"I'm kidding." You finally admitted. He looked over at you confused, "I think I'd rather sell myself for 10k than sell Lulu."
"I might sell you for 10k." He joked, "I think I've lost 10 years off my life." You both shared a laugh.
user205720 jesperi "dog dad" kotkaniemi
y/nxjesperinumber1fan she really said "i think i'd rather sell myself for 10k than sell lulu"

four, "surprising at his location him via facetime"
Jesperi was away for a string of away games, so you decided, with the help of a few his teammates, to surprise him. The tough part was every morning, you and Jesperi FaceTimed.
So, as a way to hide the surprise, you found a blank wall in the airport that looked like someplace in your house and answered the call.
"Okay, well I love you." He told you.
"I love you, too." You smiled, blowing him a kiss. He blew you one back, then you both hung up. After your call ended, you waited patiently for your flight to Dallas to board.
After a few hours, you were finally in Dallas. Teuvo was at baggage claim to meet you, "Hi." You smiled, rushing over to hug him.
"How was your flight?" He asked.
"Not too bad. Really excited to see his face." You laughed.
"All right, well he hasn't suspected a thing."
Teuvo and you drove back to the hotel, discussing your plan. Once you were in front of the hotel, you called Jesperi. He answered almost immediately, a smile on his face, "Hey, what's up?"
"Nothing much. Just wanted to see how you were doing." You shrugged.
"I'm good. How are you?" He asked.
"I'm good, just out for a walk." You turned around, making sure to get the hotel in the camera's view.
Jesperi noticed, and did a double-take, "Wait..." He stopped, examining the screen, before dropping the phone and running to get his shoes on.
It only took him a few minutes to run out and greet you, "Oh, my God." He shouted, running over and picking you up, spinning you around, "What're you doing here? Not that I'm not happy you're here."
"I wanted to surprise you." You shrugged.
"Oh," He pulled you back in for a hug, "I'm so happy you're here."
"I can't take all the credit. Turbo helped out a lot." You admitted.
"I'll be sure to thank him later, but for now, I'm gonna just enjoy you being here." He smiled, leaning down and kissing you.
user29375 wait, turbo and kk bromance starting?
ynfan065 they're so cute 😭
hurricanesfan78 the way he ran to her. i'm dead 💀

five, "red (taylor's version)
You were a Swiftie through and through, so when Red dropped, you almost lost your mind. Jesperi was in the living room, watching a game, "KK?" You asked.
"What's up?" Both him and Lulu looked up at you.
"I think we need to break up."
Jesperi was up and on his feet. Lulu was barking and yipping at your feet as if she understood what was happening, "What? Why? Did I do something wrong? What's going on?" Jesperi was clearly losing his mind.
"No, no, it's just--Taylor Swift announced the release of Red (Taylor's Version), and I want to experience it in full, so I think we need to break up so I can do so." You explained.
Jesperi let out a sigh in relief, "Again?"
"Yes, again." You nodded.
He let out a groan, "Fine, Y/N, we're breaking up. I'm gonna stay at Turbo's house."
"Wait, what? No, I was thinking you could sleep in the guest room and we can make up in the morning and be happy again." Jesperi was already halfway to the door, "Wait, J, I was kidding." You hollered after him.
"I'm taking Lulu." He hollered back.
"What? No." You pouted.
tsversionfan1989 i think y/n is all of us in relationships
caniac3000 what do he mean again? 😭
canesfan she did this during sour 😂
-
plus one, "stop walking and see how long it takes for the other to notice"
Saturdays were reserved for errands, so you did grocery shopping, cleaning, and everything else on Saturdays. You and Jesperi were in the parking lot of the grocery store.
Jesperi decided to get you back for all the times you pranked him. He began filming. You were walking ahead of him, so he stopped.
You almost made it to the door when you finally noticed he wasn't following. You turned around and saw him laughing over by the car.
"What the hell?" You shouted.
"Gotcha!" He shouted back, still recording and laughing. He jogged over to you.
"What're you doing?"
"Well, I got you back." He shrugged.
"I'm gonna walk into the store and pretend I don't know you." You told him.
"I'm kidding. I love you." He told you, pressing a kiss to your cheek.
"Love you, too." You wrapped your arms around his neck.
y/nandjesperifan he's finally getting her back.
user2957 if they ever break up, love doesn't exist.

I hope you don't mind me asking... How did you get followers? I want to start my own blog but I want to make sure I can reach audiences I want to reach. I don't have any friends who know I write, and honestly I'm not sure I'd want them to read my works anyway. I get embarrassed easily. It's much easier for me to talk to someone that I don't have a face for. Does that make sense? Probably not. But how did you start your adventure here?
I want to preface this with follower count can make sense, or it can’t. I’ve made friends with some of the most amazing, most talented writers who have less than a thousand followers. I’ve made friends with amazing, talented writers who have thousands of followers. I genuinely don’t know how to trick the algorithm into listening to you, haha, but just know that numbers don’t equal talent; popularity does not always equal skill. So please, even if you don’t have the high follower count of someone else, don’t let it discourage you from writing! Everyone starts somewhere, and everyone grows differently.
But, I’ve found that it all depends on who you write for, what you write, and how often you write.
Who you write for: Bakugou is one of the most popular characters. I truly didn’t know this when I entered the fandom, but it was really what got me started on the upward climb. I’m by no means a big blogger, lol, but I know that writing for Bakugou was what helped me out initially. He was originally the only character who I could write for because he was my favorite and I hadn’t really gotten too far into the show. I think the same goes for other fandoms - if you write for the more popular characters, who have more content in demand because they have more fans, you’re more likely to gain more followers.
DISCLAIMER: Do not let this keep you from writing for other characters who are less popular, if you prefer to write for them. Content is needed for all characters! I am desperate for some Sugawara content, but he’s not one of the more popular characters that people write for (see: Kuroo, Ushiwaka, Bokuto, Oikawa, Iwa, and Akaashi). If we only focus on the popular characters, the ones that get us the most growth, but those aren’t the characters we love, the content can seem disingenuous, if that makes sense. I got lucky by Bakugou being my favorite. But like, when I try to push out Kaminari content, I find that it’s a real struggle for me because I don’t necessarily vibe with Kaminari as a character. The same goes in reverse. If the minor characters have your heart, but you try to force out content for the popular characters, it can be tough to write and come across like you don’t really want to write it. Write who you want to write!
What you write: This is a really big deal right now, but I’m just gonna say it lol. NSFW gets more notes. I don’t say that to force you into writing NSFW content - I actually had never read/written NSFW content until this past March, and I’m 22, going on 23. Originally, when I decided to start writing, I wanted to be NSFW-free, but some stuff changed in life and in writing and I chose to make the change.
Also, I’ve found for each fandom, different things are more prevalent. For instance, the BNHA fandom seems to do a lot of AU’s and full length fics, but the Haikyuu!! fandom seems to do more traditional works that follow canon and then the content itself is mostly headcanons and short scenarios. I think you have to find what works for you and write it to the best of your ability. I suck at headcanons, I’ve never really been able to do them and they stress me out. So I stick to full length fics. I know this means I’ll do better in one fandom versus the other, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to start only doing headcanons just because it’s what’s popular.
DISCLAIMER: This does NOT mean that just because someone wrote 10k words of smut, that it’s better or more involved than your 10k words of fluff/angst/domestic/etc. writing. Unfortunately, there are horn dogs out there who are especially touch starved during quarantine. It doesn’t make anyone better or worse because they choose to write about being naked versus being clothed. Please don’t let this discourage you from writing SFW-only writing, as there are tons of people out there who are just as desperate for some comfort fics about cuddling completely clothed.
How often you write: When I first started, I had a lot more time on my hands and was able to pump out content much quicker. I grew pretty rapidly in a short period of time because I was able to consistently put out content. Since I’ve gotten more busy and my mental illness has reared it’s ugly head, I’ve not been able to write as much and I can tell my follower count growth had tapered off. But the pace in which you post content generally helps increase your follower count, because people know that you will continuously feed them with the goods! Sometimes it might be good to set a schedule so others know when you’ll be posting - say a new fic every Friday? Or sometimes it can be good to keep your followers engaged with thirst posts (SFW or NSFW), or specific nights where you do events that focus on a certain character or genre.
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT FORCE YOURSELF TO PUSH OUT CONTENT. Please be aware within your own self what your limits are. Just because one writer can sit at home and push out tons of short scenarios and drabbles during the day, but you can’t, doesn’t mean either of you are doing anything wrong. It just means that one person has a different availability than you. I don’t really do thirst posts a ton in the same respect that others do them, because I know that I’ll want to write a whole fic out of the couple of sentences that my followers might send in. However, there are many others within the fandom that can respond with a few paragraphs that take a few minutes to type out. It doesn’t mean that they’re better than me and I’m a horrible writer, it just means that in this area, they’re more skilled or have more time.
Also, don’t be afraid to tag people and send out DMs! I promise your writer idols are not nearly as scary as you think they are. And they’re probably just as excited to get a DM from you as you are to talk to them! I was really hesitant to reach out to anyone before, because I never really did much chatting in other fandoms, but the anime fandoms I’ve been apart of have been very kind and welcoming, and helpful! I made some of my closest friends because I tagged them in my works or I joined a server with them in it, or I read their stuff and reached out to them to fangirl over it. Don’t be afraid to reach out, even if you just keep the conversation focused on your writing, it’ll still be worth it in the end! The worst thing that could happen is they don’t reply or the conversation fizzles out. Either way, you will have made a connection, and blasted one another with some serotonin.
Remember to take breaks. Take a hiatus every once and a while! Take some time for yourself to recharge. If this begins to feel like a job, like an obligation, and you feel yourself dragging your feet just to put out content, please step back and reevaluate. This is a hobby, it’s supposed to be fun. Once it stops being fun, take a breather and reassess what you’re doing. Sometimes this means closing requests, sometimes this means opening requests, sometimes this means participating in collab fics, sometimes this means disconnecting entirely. This is just tumblr, in the end, and you should be able to take care of yourself first rather than pinning yourself into a corner to try and post content for the sake of your followers. In the end, everyone wants you to be happy and healthy, so you can put your best foot forward in life and in your hobbies. So please, for the love of everything, take a break every now and then. Disconnect, recharge, and regroup.
I also had a blog before this one, my main, so I’ve been on tumblr for eight year prior to this. I’m not going to even claim that I begin to understand how this hellsite works, but I will say that I’ve been writing on here for a while now, since way back to my band blog days. Eventually you just write what you want to write, and chat with your followers and your friends, and you’ll grow organically. When you start to pressure yourself over it, it can become like a cloud looming over you, and then when you don’t perform up to your preset standards, it might be a little disappointing. Follower milestones are cool to want to achieve and celebrate, but don’t pour all your focus into them. For the most part, I use milestones for celebration events to give back to my followers, or to set goals for myself like opening commissions! But they don’t determine my worth as a writer, because sometimes the tumblr algorithm is more giving to some rather than others.
Whew, this was a doozy. But I hope it helped! Some of these answers might come off a little crass, but I’m just trying to be honest. Don’t let anything deter you from doing whatever the hell you wanna do.
You wanna write that rarepair? DO IT. You wanna write character x character? DO IT. You wanna write about your Original Characters? DO IT.
Whatever it is you want to do, do it! And have a helluva time doing it 💕

Do you have any tips on running a Studygram? I'm thinking of starting one but there are already so many Studygrams, I don't know if me making one will make an impact :(
hi anon! i’m not the best or biggest studygrammer out there but I’m flattered you decided to ask me :> i think it really depends on what you mean by making an ‘impact’, so before you start a studygram you rly gotta ask yourself what you hope to get out of it. do you want to gain followers? do you want a visual record of your study journey towards some major exam (like ‘A’ levels)? do you want to make friends online and feel like you’re part of a tight-knit and supportive social circle? do you want people to admire your lettering/ bujo? do you want to post photos of stationery? do you want to get extrinsic motivation in the form of encouraging comments and likes? there are tons of reasons why people start studygrams, not all of them healthy, but rly it’s your life so u can do what u want but u have to be honest with yourself and be prepared for the consequences.
ok sO I SAID THAT ON MY STUDYBLR I WILL BE 100% REAL SO IMMA DO SOME REAL TALK AND IT MAY BE OFFENSIVE BC SOME THINGS OFTEN REMAIN UNSPOKEN BUT rly if u know me this is how i am 24/7 and if you disagree we can have a civil conversation about it later on. also i’m very sweary so you have all been warned.
if you’ve asked anyone else they’re v likely to tell you ‘the study community welcomes all! just do you and post original content and over time your account will grow’. maybe it’s worked for some people, but idk man it feels like a stock answer and i don’t think it’s working for most people who are in it for the numbers because they later resort to other methods that i will address below.
so before you dive into it i just wanna say that i have seen so many people get discouraged and stop posting / lash out at others because they did not get the popularity they wanted. they didn’t reach their ‘milestone’, an imaginary construct, and then they leave the community silently, or they go off on a rant about how it’s ‘cliquey’ or ‘exclusive’ or how ‘big accounts don’t care about small accounts’. WHY MAKE YOURSELF SO UNHAPPY THO? honestly being numbers-oriented will never give you happiness because THE STUDY COMMUNITY IS ALREADY OVERSATURATED and not every account can eventually ‘make it big’. this is the reality of it. you can try to gain followers by buying them, spending an inordinate amount of time plying smaller accounts with compliments and likes in the hopes that they will follow you willingly, sfs, fff, etc, OR you can not play the numbers game and do it for yourself. post what you want because you’re proud of your notes or your bujo. talk about your day or an exam or a test you screwed up on because you want to look back on both your mini successes and failures and see how far you’ve come. i’d recommend that. and to add on to that here are a handful of more specific ‘do not’s.
1️⃣ don’t obsess over your ratio. what ratio? the ‘posts : followers : following’ ratio. it’s childish and arbitrary. idk how having a 4:10k:70 ratio is supposed to make you a better person or a better student, but people really do that shit. like wtf. they delete/archive their posts and follow only big accounts (who MUST be mutuals) just to maintain that ratio. it’s ridiculous. and idk how someone can have the time to do all that AND get good grades. achieving the golden ratio at the expense of your own future is not worth it ya so fk that.
2️⃣ don’t obsess over making an ’aesthetic’ feed. i know this is really ironic coming from me bc my feed is just about as constructed and artificial as it gets. but that’s what i’m in it for, and my grades don’t suffer for it. also i want to add that i’m here to make something beautiful for myself, not to fit the prevailing ‘white’ aesthetic. i’ve seen so many people apologise for an ‘ugly’ post or an ‘ugly’ feed and honestly it makes me a little sad because what exactly are they comparing their photos to? real paper isn’t white. paper in natural lighting has a yellow tint to it. muji notebooks have yellowish paper. even white bedsheets don’t always come out white in photos. no one has good lighting 24/7. and honestly idgaf about a ‘clean’ feed which more often than not refers to White Everything which is not only unrealistic but Boring with a capital B. maybe your posts won’t get as many likes as you want it to because of the dim lighting or non-branded stationery or your ‘unaesthetic’ ink-blotted desk that isn’t strewn with potpourri. but if you’re thinking along those lines then you’re already doing it for the numbers, y’know what i mean? fk the numbers! do it for art! do it for yourself! art doesn’t need validation to be art! also from personal experience, the prettiest most artistic accounts are often highly underrated. to quote a friend, ‘people relate to mediocrity’. if you try to copy the big accounts because you want to have that kind of popularity, your feed will look boring and generic and lacklustre, like a knockoff version of theirs. except you don’t have the numbers either. so what does that make your account but the ghost of another person’s? just be yourself and post your own shit it’s better in the long run.
3️⃣ don’t apologise for ‘not posting enough’ or whatever. it’s your account and honestly you don’t owe it to anyone to post anything, esp if you don’t have the time or energy bc of exams or impt life events. also i honestly don’t think anyone cares if you don’t post for more than a week?? tbvh no one really cares or notice???? if posting becomes an obligation then why even run a studygram??? isn’t it supposed to be a fun and relaxing hobby? if you’re posting because you’re not gaining followers or impressions and you don’t even like the post that much so you’re gonna delete it later, WHAT IS THE POINT? pls refer to point 2.
4️⃣ don’t ask for sfs / fff. it may work with some of the nicer, more numbers-oriented people, but from what i know most big accounts really cannot stand it when some random upstart comments / dms asking for a shoutout or for a follow or for them to ‘check out their page’. you will be labelled thirsty or attention-seeking, and they may or may not mock you on their private accounts. it’s just really irritating? like why even create a study account if you’re just trying to play the numbers game? are your grades really going to improve if you can ‘reach’ 1k followers? i have never done sfs / fff bc it just feels dishonest to me. if i shoutout someone it’s bc i think their content is underrated and deserves more attention, not bc i want their followers to follow me in exchange for my followers following them. it’s just so…transactional and dehumanising? i don’t think followers should be treated like mere statistics and i prefer having genuine friendships.
5️⃣ don’t do the ‘follow for a followback and then unfollow’ thing and all of its variations, e.g. ‘follow and then unfollow if you don’t get a followback’, ‘leave a dozen comments hoping for a follow that you won’t reciprocate’, ‘leave a dozen comments hoping for a follow first bc u don’t want to follow without a guaranteed followback’, or the worst: ’calling people out for unfollowing you when you never followed them back because you’re obsessed with maintaining your golden ratio’. it’s unsavoury and off-putting and everyone can see right through it.
6️⃣ don’t post a coloured-out screenshot of your latest post on your story informing people of your new post and asking them to ‘check it out’ or ‘show it some love’ when we all know it means ‘pls like my latest post bc numbers matter to me’. maybe it works if you have a big account bc even if it’s only 0.5% of your viewers who will purposely tap on your profile and like your latest post, that 0.5% is a lot of people which translates to a lot more likes. but if you’re a small account it just looks like you’re imitating the big accounts and being thirsty for followers and likes. it’s not classy. to put it colloquially, damn despo lah don’t liddat can.
