My Movie Review: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"
Tumblr media
I'm FINALLY getting around to writing this movie review after all of the unfortunate craziness that's been going on in my life for the past two months.....🤪🤦🏾‍♀️
Anyway, I saw “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at theaters over a month ago lol!  😅 I just wanted to share my own personal Movie Review, and see what you all maybe thought about the film as well.
**NOTE:  I will first start off by giving a very general overview/review of the movie overall, and then further down below, I will discuss the pros and cons from the movie, and will go more in-depth and be more candid with how I felt about the movie. 😊
With that said….
OVERALL:
Overall, I felt like this movie was the type of film that someone who is a fan of Whitney's music might want to check out just for the sheer enjoyment of her music alone.
I had forgotten how many great hits Whitney had over the years, and how many of her songs have been iconic to me growing up. I've always been a huge fan, and so this movie was a nice tribute to her music. I got chills down my spine during some of her performance scenes. 😊 I was even singing and dancing along to most of her music lol. 😂 There were quite a few things that I didn't know about Whitney's personal life (especially her younger life) that this movie seemed to touch on a little bit, so that was interesting. Personally? I felt like the acting of Naomi, Ashton, Nafessa, and Tamara Tunie especially, really stood out in this film imo.
PROS:
The music was great!
The acting was decent
I liked the "back-in-time" 80s and 90s wardrobe/fashions lol
They tried their best to make the cast look like the real Whitney/Bobby/Clive/Cissy/Bobbi Christina, etc.
I feel like I learned a lot more about Whitney's younger life, and her relationship with Robyn than I knew about.
I actually felt like Nafessa kind of stole the show in her scenes with Naomi. 👀
CONS:
I hate to say it.... But the main thing that took me out of this movie each and every time was the fact that Naomi looked NOTHING AT ALL like Whitney HOUSTON!!!! 😤😡 Usually I'm not that picky and I don't really care as much and I can suspend my disbelief even if the actor doesn't look exactly like the real person in history because their acting is so good, but for some reason, with this movie, I just couldn't do it.....I'm sorry! I would hear Whitney's VOICE singing, but then when I would LOOK at the actress, it just took me out of the whole entire scene. :(
I almost felt like it was someone cosplaying as Whitney Houston. To her credit, Naomi is a great actress... But I just kept asking myself throughout the whole entire movie: "You mean to tell me there were NO African-American actresses who looked a LITTLE like Whitney that they could have chosen for this role??"
Whoever wrote this film certainly gave Bobby Brown the "Good Edit", cuz ummmm..... 👀 In this movie they almost made it seem like Bobby and Whitney just had regular normal spats like most couples, and we all know THAT is a lie. 😒🙄 I'm shocked they didn't show her with not one black eye in the film, nor did they even allude to him hitting her. But oh well....
My other gripe with this movie was the fact that I didn't feel like enough money was put into it. I feel like this movie should have been BIGGER. I have seen at least two Whitney biopics now (a made-for-TV one, and this movie), and EACH and every single time, I feel like they just don't do Whitney's life story justice. I feel like it's always some low-budget type deal. 🥴 I'm sorry, but after seeing awesome biopics like "Ray", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Elvis", "JFK", "Malcolm X", etc. , I just can't with this biopic. It's just NOT on the same level as those others at all. It makes me sad that it almost felt like they didn't even TRY with this biopic. 😔
MY OVERALL SCORE:  6/10  - Overall, if you love Whitney's iconic music, and just want to have a great time dancing and enjoying a light-hearted film, then check it out! But if you're expecting this film to be on any sort of level as other biopics done.... Then, you're going to be sorely disappointed. 😔 They just didn't put as much MONEY into this film as I would have hoped. I just hope that Michael's biopic has some BIG money behind it. I just feel like Whitney's biopic deserved better...and I would have started by casting someone else as the lead. 👀
I gave this movie a chance even despite my overwhelming feeling that the actress looked NOTHING like Whitney. I tried...But it did make a difference in some of my enjoyment of the film. (no offense) Maybe it's because I actually remember when Whitney was alive lol. Anyway.... Overall, it's a fun movie to watch at least once, and I encourage anyone who is just a fan of her music to check it out. I would say that it's streamable.... It's not one you have to watch on the big screen in other words. It was good fun though! So, definitely one worth checking out if you're a fan of Whitney's music. 😊👍

Hi,
So "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody" was a great movie... for fans of Whitney "The Voice" Houston.
It was made in a very respectful way. Especially with a very cleverly done recording-of-an-album scene, sadly very fast-paced because (let's be honest) how much from such an eventful life of an artist can you fit into a two hour movie?
Nonetheless it is very much in the clear with the Bechdel test. Moreover I can assure you, it has my "It's a LGBT+ friendly movie" seal of approval.
It's breathtaking how much Naomie Ackie resembles Whitney at times and surprising that we do not see the real Houston until the credits. Huge kudos to the leading lady!
I also give a big medal of greatness to my king Stanley Tucci, who once again proved he can play so warm and cosy character that you just wish to be hugged by him and hear words of comfort spoken with his voice
See you in the audience! 🎬

The idea that I Wanna Dance with Somebody would reintroduce the world to Whitney Houston's music, at first, seems preposterous. After all, Houston's collection of hit songs -- 11 No. 1 songs and 29 that hit the Top 40 -- have never left the airwaves, playing on a wide variety of radio formats. But have we taken Houston and those songs for granted? That's certainly a possibility. And Naomi Ackie, who plays Houston in the new biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, hopes that seeing and hearing some of Houston's hits on the big screen will restore those songs to a prominent place in the public's consciousness. I Wanna Dance with Somebody is now playing in theaters.

so i have three movie reviews to catch up on for the year (along with oh god so many things) but i did get to see the black panther sequel at my theater and it was fantastic, i loved it so much, and getting to be at the theater in general was such a nice experience it made me even more determined to try and save up by the end of next year to afford the regal unlimited movie pass thing.
but even though that’s a reasonable (and frugal, with the huge holiday discount they do) plan, gosh it’s so frustrating that suddenly way more potentially fun movies are coming out all at once right now.
i don’t actually think i would enjoy the gore of violent night, but DAVID HARBOUR. got his own CHRISTMAS MOVIE. i’m so proud of him! forever out here rooting for my current bipolar hero.
the whitney houston biopic will probably not hold a lot of surprises? because i feel like music biopics have always been formulaic in a way that i noticed even as a preteen, before i knew what other tropes were. but it still looks really good! i want to go to with kayla while she’s here for the holidays.
and now there’s babylon, which at least according to the advertisements is going to be over the top and ridiculous grandeur and high drama, with margot robbie AND jean smart AND phoebe tonkin! and it’s a period piece set during early hollywood!! it sounds so fun.
with the cost of theater movies and how rarely they release ones here that are important to me, i only see a couple a year--i’m very particular about the ones i pick. but if i had the prepaid ability to see any one at any time, it really would lower the bar back to the kind of person i used to be, who would be like ‘hey that movie has an actor in it i like or an intriguing plot. no clue if the movie will be good, but it will be an experience.’
i miss having those experiences. before moving here, i once spent the day at a theater that had an embedded starbucks (woo) and i saw the greatest showman (a rewatch, that movie just made me so happy), followed by the post, followed by get out, followed by yet another attempt at the greatest showman (i nodded off partway through that 10pm showing oops). it was such a great day, and both the post and get out were movies i was sort of giving a chance to, rather than expecting to like. which made them even nicer, like discoveries.
having a wider range of movie theater experiences again, going in without any idea if i’ll actually like a movie...sounds so perfect to me. as a way to get out of the house but also (to be a little cheesy) as a way to feed my soul. i’m just really impatient now that movies are getting my attention again--next november feels so far away.

I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (2022)
Starring Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Nafessa Williams, Tamara Tunie, Ashton Sanders, Clarke Peters, Bria Danielle Singleton, Daniel Washington, Kris Sidberry, Marilyn Swick, Naheem Garcia, Greg Roman, Alana Monteiro, Heidi Garza, Tanner Beard, Jennifer Ellis, JaQuan Malik Jones, Alexa Renée, Courtney Caruso, Dave Heard, Rob Lévesque and Lance A. Williams.
Screenplay by  Anthony McCarten.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. 146 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Whitney Houston had a fascinating, exciting, tragic, complex life. There is a whole lot of stuff that went on in her life – both the highs and the lows – probably more than can be explored in a movie. Even a relatively long two-and-a-half-hour movie.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody rushes through the years; the accomplishments, the dramas, the scandals, the complications and the early death of arguably the defining singing voice of her generation, giving the film the feel of a greatest hits medley. However, many of those hits are pretty terrific, so it’s often very entertaining. You just never feel like you’re getting the whole song.
Interestingly, I Wanna Dance With Somebody seems to revolve around a single performance of Houston’s – a live medley of “I Loves You Porgy” “And I’m Telling You That I’m Not Going” and “I Have Nothing” which she did on the 1994 American Music Awards. The film starts and ends on the performance, and also mentions it several times throughout the run of the film as proof that Houston was the greatest voice of her time.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve never heard of this particular performance, and while it was stunningly performed (the film uses Houston’s vocals over the lip syncing by star Naomi Ackie) I’m not sure it was the most memorable performance in Houston’s career, not by a long shot.
And that is what I Wanna Dance With Somebody does best – reminding us of Houston’s music and performances, all with newly remixed and powerful sound.
Actress Ackie does a terrific job in portraying the different eras of Houston’s life – recreating performances, capturing her cadences and attitudes (although she doesn’t exactly look like Houston) and capturing her highs and lows.
It falls into a pretty standard music biofilm structure – the rise and fall of a terrific performer, from obscurity to the top of the world, touching on many milestones and showing the temptations of great fame.
As an officially sanctioned biofilm, I Wanna Dance With Somebody slightly pulls its punches on some of the darker aspects of her life. For example, they toy with the longtime gossip that Houston was gay or bi, and possibly involved with her longtime best friend Robin (Nafessa Williams), teasing the possibility of a relationship – even showing them cohabitation, kissing and Robin getting jealous – before pulling away from the possibility quickly and pretty definitively, coyly suggesting that maybe they were mainly just besties after all.
They also have ex-husband Bobby Brown played in a cartoonishly stupid way, almost feeling like a Chris Rock parody of the guy. Now, no one has ever claimed that Bobby Brown was a deep, thoughtful guy, but I have to believe that he was not the gangsta Casanova loser they play him off as. After all, even the film Whitney acknowledges that the drug addiction that ended up taking her life was not Brown’s fault and he got too much blame for it. (Although, in fairness, he certainly didn’t help…)
Also, super producer Clive Davis (as played by Stanley Tucci) is played out as an exceedingly sweet, magnanimous, supportive force in Whitney’s life. Maybe that is even true, but it’s hard to believe that in a relationship that lasted for well over three decades that there wasn’t some acrimony between them ever. However, the super-nice Clive may just be explained by the fact that Davis is one of the producers of the film.
Also, much like Davis, occasionally the film tends to reduce the diva to her sales figures. In the end credits chyron talking about her life, career and death, they make a point to say how she was the only woman to ever to be diamond-certified three times (her 1985 debut album, 1987’s Whitney and the 1992 The Bodyguard soundtrack). Now, I’m a music nerd, so I know what diamond-certified means (ten million albums sold, also known as ten-times platinum), but I’m pretty sure that stat will go right over the head of most casual fans. More to the point, is it really fair to reduce Houston’s career to units sold, or even awards she won, which the end credit chyron also lists faithfully?
Whitney Houston was much more complicated than that. And while I Wanna Dance With Somebody tries its best to capture the essence of Whitney, it comes off a bit more like the Cliff Notes version of her life. It hits on most of the highlights and lowlights, but it doesn’t explore most of them deeply enough. Perhaps this would have worked better as a limited series for TV or streaming, where the story and characters would have room to breathe and get more in depth.
But, man, what a soundtrack. Just hearing these songs again in full cinema sound is definitely worth the price of a ticket.
