This woman is an international treasure.

I can't get over how calmly, in detail, and obvious arguments she exposes the shitfuckery of colonizers (to their descendants' face), while never falling into the insult trap.

The sultan of Bamoun took a seat on the throne of his dynasty, which is held in the Humboldt Forum. This happened during an official visit on the 11th June 2023. These are important images that hopefully support the delegitimization of this museum and its collection. But it is also important to see that the Humboldt Forum claims to decolonize itself through cooperation with communities from former colonies. In an interview the only black curator of the museum judged this strategy and gave reasons why he quit after 2 years: Interview with Ibu Diop. These programs they are running often are contradicting claims of restitution, such claims see a renaissance right now and the pressure on museums increases.
What the museums do from time to time is to allow spiritual reconnection, by touch or other activation (examples: 1, 2, 3). This happend for example with another entry from Cameroun, Ngonnso, last year: Link. Often they claim that this is not possible because of all the toxins used by the colonizers on the wood. Apparently from the video, this is not what happened here though, but the sultan was passing by the chair offered to him and sat on the throne!
The white person that is guiding him towards the throne is the curator of the collection. The museums allow connection because they know they should give it back, but they don't. They talk about new relations with Africa, they are afraid of the geopolitical influence of China - just like the French president who said we will give thousands of items back and then gave back a hand full. Cameroon is interesting for Europe because of pipelines running to the coast, plus the harbours and the roads leading there (400 million invested by China in the biggest road project there, also a new port built by China nearby Douala).
In German museums there are ca. 40.000 entries from Cameroon. Thousands also in the Humboldt Forum, they call this throne the "highlight" of their museum collection. They want to be the decolonized museum, even publish a magazine on this and invite BIPOC to speak there, but they keep everything and even put the collection in a reconstructed 17th century Hohenzollern castle - the Humboldt Forum in the Berliner Schloss. The original was constructed from 1698 to 1713.
Sidenote, the Berlin Hohenzollern were slave traders in the 17th century, building a fortress called Groß Friedrichsburg (1683 to 1717) on the other side of the bay of Guinea, some hundred kilometres across from the Kingdom of Bamoun where this throne is from. The emperor Wilhelm II who got this throne in 1908 was the last Hohenzollern, who were toppled by the German socialists in the November revolution of 1918, and later it was the East-German state socialists that blew up his castle in 1950. Circa ten years after the end of East-German socialism in 1989, the German government decided in 2002 to rebuild the castle. Also it was decided that it should house museums, amongst them the so called "ethnological collections" full of entries from the German colonies.
Full respect to the hopes and celebration that took place in the collection on 11th of June 2023, and the movement for restitution, just some context on what made this event possible? More info on the long struggle for restitution can be found with the initiatives no-humboldt21, Bring back Ngonnso and AfricAvenir

“Humboldt Forum”, Schloßplatz 1, 10178, Berlin, Germany [2020] _ Architect: Franco Stella _ Photos by Spyros Kaprinis [25.01.2023].
“The new building facing the Spree, is intended as the 'fourth wing' of the reconstructed Baroque building, completing Schlüter's original idea of transforming the Palace into a unitary edifice, following the example of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque ones. The size and the figurative principles of the façade are similar to those of the three reconstructed wings: by virtue of the extraordinary size of its window openings, in particular their depth of over a meter, the front on the Spree looks like a 'façade of loggias' , which suggests the public character of the building.”
