World Humanitarian Day.

World Humanitarian Day is an international day dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as part of a Swedish-sponsored GA Resolution A/63/L.49 on the Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Assistance of the United Nations, and set as 19 August. It marks the day on which the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.

I was "stressing" this morning over what camera to buy next, what "must-have" lens to put in my cart, a stack of unpaid invoices and a series of looming deadlines. A typical day for a freelance photographer. But then, as I was looking through some recent work, I found this pic from a @_gritmedia_ project with @timtebowfoundation. And I quickly forgot about my "problems." I'm grateful for moments like this that teach me humility, and remind me to use my camera to tell people's stories, to show them God's love, and to offer them compassion and respect. Tucked away deep in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, these local teens performed a traditional dance for us showcasing their values and customs. It was beautiful! Tragically, six out the ten of these jovial spirits will have cancer caused by toxic run off. 60% of the population in Loma del Tigre. :( Crude oil deposits and palm oil farms are the biggest cause of toxicity in the Ecuadorian rainforest. Hello this is @gilesduley for #TPGTakeovers My work is focused on documenting the long term impact of conflict, the Legacy of War. Food is the way I connect with those who’s stories I tell, I always felt I take a better photograph is I’ve eaten with the families first. For me food is life @one_armed_chef Catholic Orphanage, Bailundo, Angola 2008 This is one of the earliest times i remember food appearing in my work so prominently Food is so tied to my photography now, thats its hard to remember a time when it wasn't so. The nuns of the Catholic Mission in Bailundo run a small orphanage for those who lost their parents during the war. The orphanage was self sufficient, with all the children working to help themselves survive as a community. But survival was constantly under threat. Just three weeks before I visited, unknown gunmen entered the Catholic Mission and killed the priest. In this image one of the nuns stoops to serve the children’s dinner of beans. You can almost hear her back creak. It feels timeless, as if taken by another photographer at a different time. About a year ago, Kaleb White and I were in Uganda, #onassignment for the @timtebowfoundation, documenting a Christian home for children with special needs. These kids lived in the local community and attended class at the school. We were struck by their joy, curiosity and obvious love for each other. We could learn a great deal from these kids.
