𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕙𝕠𝕝𝕥 𝕗𝕒𝕞𝕚𝕝𝕪
So I got this story stuck in my head, a little spinoff about Faelern going home to Chestnut Ridge for the first time in 20 years due to his father being sick. It would follow his homecoming and explore relationships within his family and get into why he was away for so long. I don't know if I'll ever get time to flesh this out in game but I got inspired and made his whole family.
I had fun doing the family reunion challenge a while back so I did another one. Check out under the cut if you're interested in who's who and a little more about our ever-gloomy Faelern.
Faelern Adan 'the prodigal son' - Leaving home at a young age due to strained familial relationships, Faelern spent most of his adulthood immersed in his studies, obtaining a doctorate in Anthropology and becoming the youngest tenured professor in his department at the University of Britechester. As touched a tiny bit in A Devil Between Us, Faelern spent several years happily married to Laelia, who was tragically murdered during a home invasion 12 years prior. Evidently this devastated Faelern and he hasn't been the same since. This also may be a contributing factor to his intense and chaotic relationship with walking disaster Ms. Aida Fairbairn several years later. Faelern is the third of his father's children.
Sicheii Holt 'the patriarch' - While much calmer in his old age, the eldest member of the Holt family was once a notorious womanizer, creating an extremely tense relationship with his now-deceased wife and mother of Faelern's siblings. This only increased when it was discovered that one of his affairs resulted in a child (uh oh). Exponentially so when said illegitimate child was sent to live with Sicheii and his family after the sudden death of his mother at the age of five. While Sicheii was a generally a good father, his transgressions definitely impacted the family, creating complicated relationships all around (hurrah). At the beginning of the spinoff, he would be severely ill, resulting in Faelern's homecoming.
Atsa Holt 'the golden child' - Atsa, the eldest of Sicheii's children, adored his father from the time he was born. And Sicheii adored his son, spending most of their time hunting and fishing together. Everything changed when Atsa was eight, when younger half-brother Faelern came to live with the family and ruined his idyllic childhood. Atsa blamed his brother for his parents' fighting and shattering the vision he had of his father. Instead of focusing his anger on Sicheii, Atsa turned his resentment towards his half-brother, letting him know he was an enemy and would never belong. As a result, the boys were never close and fought frequently. As an adult, Atsa continues to carry a major chip on his shoulder and does not acknowledge his brother as kin. He is furious that Faelern had the audacity to show his face in Chestnut Ridge.
Emmaline Holt 'the gossip queen' - Emmaline is Atsa's wife. Much more outgoing and cheerful than her husband, she's often the organizer of family gatherings and parties (she's always knows all the good gossip). Having never met her newly-returned brother-in-law, Em cannot believe that Atsa would treat him so poorly after being away for so long. Between me and you, Atsa will be sleeping on the sofa for a while.
Jacy Holt 'the wild child' - Atsa's and Emmaline's 9-yo daughter. Twin sister to Mato and the loud one of the two. You'll usually find her annoying her father or on the playground with her friends.
Mato Holt 'the bookworm' - The quiet, bookish twin and Atsa's constant reminder of his half-brother. The kid is exactly like his uncle Faelern in his interests and demeanor, much to his father's dismay. Mato would much rather be reading in his room than socializing.
Tallulah Holt 'the dutiful daughter' - Tallulah is the eldest sister, a no-nonsense, tough as nails matriarch with one son of her own. While not particularly close to her half-brother as children, she feels a deep sense of duty to her family and is angered that Faelern would turn his back on them for so long. She has her hands full at the moment, trying to parent the rebellious and surly teenaged Kai as a single parent all while managing her 17 mlm businesses.
Kai Holt 'the rebellious teen' - Kai is going through a major rebellious phase. The 16 year old has discovered hair bleach, Nirvana and his mother Tallulah at her wits end with him.
Tahoma Holt 'the jokester' - The running joke in the family is that youngest brother was named after his father's beloved pickup truck (true). Tay is loud, boisterous and the family goofball. A contractor by day, he spends his nights at open mics across the region workshopping his comedy routines, with big dreams of becoming a comedy writer. Unlike the elder siblings, Tay doesn't remember life without his half-brother, and is actually happy to see him again.
Doli Holt 'the baby sister' - Doli is the youngest Holt child by many years. Currently working as a receptionist, Doli has dreams of going to university in the city, just like her older brother, whom she hasn't seen since she was a kid. Having been born after Faelern arrived in the family, Doli only has good memories of her brother.
Auntie Deborah and Uncle Des Holt 'the elders' - Auntie Deborah and Uncle Des are known as well-respected healers in the community and stable and a positive influence on all the kids. That said, now that they're all adults Des won't stop trying to push his homegrown weed on his nieces and nephews. Tahoma says it tastes like burning hair.

Promise
promise | saratogaroad rating: G wordcount: 1913 characters: Shiro, Keith, Reader (GN-OC) relationships: Shiro/Reader other tags: Grief/Mourning, reunions warnings: None.
You sigh against his shoulder, but he pulls away to look at you. His eyes are warm, filled with love that makes your heart grow in size. He puts his hand on your cheek.
"Hey." He kisses your forehead, your nose. "I'll come back. I promise."
---- What if Shiro left behind an S/O when he left for the Kerberos Mission? A year is a very long time to wait. (Written pre-Season 2, and long before we knew Adam existed. Tried to keep it gender-neutral all the same.)
--
You've been dating Shiro--Takashi Shirogane but he really does prefer Shiro--for almost a year when he's assigned to the Kerberos mission. Pluto's fourth moon, you can't even see the thing from the telescope you've dragged up onto the Garrison's flat roof. The fact that it's too cloudy to make out even Mars doesn't help, but Shiro smiles at your attempts anyway.
"Hey," He says as you plop down beside him, frustrated, "It's only for a year." He reaches up to run his fingers through your hair, rubbing your shoulder as you lean against him. "I'll be back before you know it."
"A year's a long time, Takashi." You say in response, the rare use of his given name turning his smile wry. He pulls you in closer until you're almost smushed together, the pulse in his neck strong beneath your ear.
"Absence makes the heart grow fonder." You can hear him grin, sure and confident. You love that about him. Barely graduated with last year's class and already taking a science team to the outer reaches of the system. Sure, it's just a science mission and they'll be back within a year, but it's not just any prodigy that gets chosen for this. "Though you're pretty fond of me already."
"Oh," You laugh, "I'll show you fond!"
There's a certain heat to the kiss, a certain heat that pools in your belly every time he kisses you like this, and you run your fingers through his short cropped hair to pull him close, his hands on your back to do the same. You kiss until you're both breathless, flushed and leaning on one another. Below, the Garrison calls for lights out in ten minutes. You sigh against his shoulder, but he pulls away to look at you. His eyes are warm, filled with love that makes your heart grow in size. He puts his hand on your cheek.
"Hey." He kisses your forehead, your nose. "I'll come back. I promise."
----
He lied. He doesn't come back.
----
Life goes on like it always has after he's gone. The Garrison has a moment of silence, both for Shiro and the Holts, but nothing changes. Classes, assignments, internships and training...it's all the same. Only the color's been leeched out, you think to yourself, drained through the Shiro-shaped hole in your chest. He was gone for so long that his dorm was already long cold, his scent faded. His things are boxed in your dorm where he asked you to keep them, clothes and accolades and personal effects. There's no next of kin, family long gone and buried. There was just you, Shiro, and Keith.
Keith, who gets himself kicked from the Garrison within a month of Shiro's death. Shiro was his anchor, his best friend, his reason to be better, and now Shiro is gone. There is just you and Keith now, and you're not an anchor. Not the kind he needs, anyway. You spend what free time you have with Keith, trying to keep him from collapsing in on himself like the star you and Shiro knew he could be, even if in the desert the only thing that'll come down is the ramshackle hut he calls home. You don't talk much--the only connection you had was Shiro--but you think he appreciates you being there anyway.
"Do you think he's out there?" He asks you one late night, when everything is pitch dark except for the moon and stars. Trying to find Kerberos through the viewfinder of a telescope, you don't look up even as your heart skips a beat and your stomach knots itself up again. You know who he's talking about, know the Shiro-shaped hole in your chest with its still throbbing edges.
He has one, too.
You sigh, sitting back on your hands. Stars glimmer overhead, as they always have. As they always will. Shiro's hands ghost through your hair, grown out since the last time you saw him. Everything's the same, everything's changed. You swallow hard.
"...I don't know, Keith," You say, unable to voice the words you know to be true. That Shiro really is dead and gone, not just trapped somewhere like in those novels you used to laugh over together. "I don't know." ---
Months pass. A year since Shiro left comes and goes without fanfare, without mention. Classes are ongoing, graduation for your year next month. Cadets wash in, cadets wash out. Life continues as it always has.
Until, one night, it doesn't. Keith calls you in the dead of night, the hour so late it's early. He tells you to come to the shack, that he needs your eyes. He never calls, not without a good reason, and so you go. He picks you up at the edge of the Garrison property, hoverbike eating up the desert like it's so much paved road. The shack stands, his notes and diagrams and charts pinned to the wall. You've been out here doing this before, helping him look for whatever calls him to those cliffs and canyons, but there's more to work with now.
"I've almost got it," He says to you as you tack a photo to the wall, uncaring of your eyes wanting to close and stay closed for a few hours. "I just..." He rakes both hands through his hair, the bags under his eyes thicker than before. "I...Shiro would have figured it out by now."
He's right, you think to yourself. Shiro would know what to do. But he's not here anymore. He'll never be here again.
You still can't bring yourself to say it. It's been a year, but you can't bring yourself to say he's gone. There's a new name on the marker the Garrison has, for those lost to the stars and space in the name of Progress, three new names and a small memorial ceremony the day they were revealed, but you still can't say it even to yourself.
"...Yeah," You finally whisper, smoothing wrinkled papers just to do something with your hands. "He would have."
Keith's next words die in a wash of fire. You both rush to the window as it lights up like daylight, like sunrise. Only it's not. It's a fireball. He's a step ahead of you to rush outside, heat like summer cooking the desert sand as a fireball lights the sky. You watch it go, the shape irregular, metals gleaming in the light of re-entry. It's not a meteor. It's a sort of pod, black even against the flames that chase it down. Thoughts of a missile, of an attack on the Garrison, pass through your mind before they go up in flames as the thing, whatever it is, crashes into the desert with a plume of dust, not smoke and fire. Not a missile then, but what?
Keith is on his bike before you can turn to ask, calling that he's going to check this out, and he's gone before you can react or even hope to stop him.
Again, you are alone.
You hope the Shiro-shaped hole in your chest doesn't add a Keith-sized addition to it tonight, but he has your only ride out of the desert. There is nothing to do but wait, tidying the tiny shack and stacking boxes. There's some of Shiro's things here, clothes and books that make your heart jump to your throat even though you knew they'd be here. For the thousandth time, you wish he was here, back with you, back after the mission was completed with flying colors.
For the thousandth time, he is not here.
The roar of Keith's bike jolts you away from the sadness, throaty and heavier than before, as if carrying a weight it's not meant to carry. You throw the door open, step into the desert wind, and stare. There are five on a bike meant for two at the most, Keith and three faces that you know, sort of. They're in a younger year, faces passed in the hallways and names passed in gossip. They aren't your focus. Your focus is on the man between Keith and the lanky one as they jump down, on a familiar face you thought you'd never see again.
Shiro.
Your voice has left you, heart pounding as they stumble past. It's Shiro. His face is different, cheekbones hollowed out and skin pale in a way you've never seen him before, a shock of white in his overgrown hair that was once all black. But it's him. You'd know him anywhere.
"What happened?" You ask, following them inside, though it's more of a shriek because how is this possible? He was gone and there was a memorial and there was nothing but loss and now he's here again! You want to shake Kieth for answers, but you know that he has as few as you do.
"Sedation," Keith finally grits out as he and the other boy set Shiro down on Keith's cot, the blanket folded neatly in your need to do something. "He'll wake up soon."
And then he's rounding on the others, all bluster and growling and shoving. But your focus isn't on them. It's still on Shiro as you drop to your knees beside the cot, unsure if any of this is real or just an elaborate dream. He's breathing, chest rising and falling beneath the odd black bodysuit and torn purple shirt. He's thinner than before, muscles stark lines along his tall frame, a dark scar across his nose. Slowly, you reach out to touch him. He doesn't disappear, doesn't decay or anything like you'd expect a corspe to do, and you muffle a sob behind your other hand.
He's real. He's really here. You take his hand, squeeze it hard, and don't let go.
An hour passes. Two. Three. Sunrise comes as the silence grows awkward, Keith sitting on the edge of the cot like a hound on guard. The other three huddle in the corner together, unsure and insecure, but you don't lift your gaze from Shiro's slumbering body. You wait, wondering, hoping, praying. He's home he just has to wake up and then--
And then he does. A soft noise, a blink at the ceiling, before he stiffens. His hand in yours goes sweaty, clammy, and he jerks his head to stare at you, eyes wide and face carved into something like terror. Your heart skips a beat even as Keith moves, ready to pull you back if this goes bad, but Shiro stops. Stares at you, pulse racing beneath your fingers. His breath hitches as you hold yours, daring to hope nothing's wrong and he remembers you, daring to hope that he's still Shiro, the man you loved.
The man you still love.
The tense silence stretches. You stare at each other, his eyes meeting yours. But then, slowly, he pulls his hand from yours.
"You're..." His voice is hoarse, raspy from disuse. He stares at you, drinking you in like you're the first person he's seen in a year. Maybe you are. "...You're real?"
You smile, just a little, as your breath catches in your throat and your eyes fill with tears. He reaches up to put a hand on your cheek, gasping as he feels warmth beneath his fingers. Shiro's not a crier, has never been a crier, but in that moment you think he might start. You take his hand in yours again, feeling his pulse racing still.
"I'm real. You're home."

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Petros Island, Greece.
Yo Deuce-
How's Greece and the Gorgon family reunion? I would say "wish you were here" but then I'd have to share ghouls with you and I kinda like being selfish.
Later, Jackson
...
Look at the handwriting! That is definitely Holt Hyde pretending to be Jackson! 🥸🕵️‍♀️📸🧐 It's especially evident in how the two write their "J"
Also! Jackson doesn't say "Yo" or "later." Who's he trying to fool?
Holt, you like being selfish? 👁️👄👁️ Should I be concerned?
Woah there Holt! 🧯💨💨 *sprays him with fire extinguisher*
Holt, do you need to join DJ Hyde in horny jail? 🤔 (Jeez that kid is horny 😓😩😵😵‍💫)

Well I hope in G3 they don't clutter with new characters each TV special. I know you have underrated character that's your absolute favorite and wishes that character get more screen time but with MH cast is so big. You almost forgot who is who? You will see ..
New Ghoul @ School: We have The Main MH cast:
Frankie, Clawdeen, Draculaura, Lagoona, Cleo, Ghoulia and Deuce
So far so good
Frights On!: Was introducing Belfry Prep vampires and Crescent Moon High werewolves and Van Hellscream [No dolls]
Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love:
There's C.A Cupid and Valentine [as Comic Con exclusive]
Escape from Skull Shores: Promote Skull Shores line and new characters: Andy Beast, Kipling, Tikis and Farnum [No dolls of them]
Friday Night Frights:
Aside to promote Skultimate Roller Maze line. Is more like introduction Robecca Steam and Rochelle Goyle [No Rocco doll]
Ghouls Rule: Promote Ghouls Rule's line, And new characters are humans [no new dolls]
Scaris: City of Frights:
Catrine DeMew, Jinafire Long, Skelita Calaveras and Garrott du Roque
13 Wishes:
Introduction of Twyla and Catty Noir, Gigi Grant and Whisp [as Comic Con exclusive]
Frights, Camera, Action!:
Clawdia Wolf, Elissabat, Honey Swamp and Viperine Gorgon
Freaky Fusion:
Neighthan Rot, Avea Trotter, Sirena Von Boo, and Bonita Femur
Haunted:
Vandala Doubloons, River Styxx, Kiyomi Haunterly, and Porter "Paintergeist" Geiss
Boo York Boo York:
Astranova, Luna Mothews, Mouscedes King, and Elle Eedee
Great Scarrier Reef:
Posea Reef, Kala Mer'ri, Peri and Pearl Serpentine
And out mention introduction of exchange students line...
In my option 3 characters should be limited and think carefully which characters would fit in the story and they would appear more in the future? Aside just appear background as cameo...
in Scaris: They just stick with Jinafire, Catrine and Skelita. Sorry Garrott but the movie is about Clawdeen entering a contest to become Moanatella's "apprentice"... Besides Garrott isn't MH student and lives in Scaris. I bet you almost forgot that he and Rochelle still together...
In Frights Camera Action!: Can they just stick Clawdia, Elissabat and Honey Swamp. Sorry Viperine, maybe in Deuce's family reunion in Greece would be more appropriate to introduce her ( I can't believe that never once Deuce and Viperina got interacted together)
In Freaky Fusion: Stick with Neighthan and Sirena and replace Avea and Bonita with Deuce and Jackson/ Holt (MH writers just forgot that Deuce is half human/gorgon and Jackson is half human/monster/elemental)
In Haunted: Just stick with River, Porter and Kiyomi. Sorry Vandala but she seems out place in school setting. Perhaps in Shriekwrecked series would be perfect for Vandala
In Boo York: Just stick with Astranova, Luna and Mouscedes and replace Elle with Seth Ptomely.
[RAISE HANDS WHO WANTS SETH DOLL]
I have nothing to say in Scarrier Reef: I just wish Finn Wake would be part of movie because he's siren and Gil's "stingray" form is pretty cool
So in conclusion: Focus on develop existing characters and don't make more

Rambling about my fic and literary hardships under the cut
I think the thing that gives me the most secondhand embarrasment on rereading/finding new comments for ikmka is the way I handled the ensemble/background/random ironborn OCs part of the cast, there's just too many for the lenght, a lot of episodes are bizarre/pointless/just there to separate more important scenes etc, was it really needed to have three separate fosterlings of Alannys and three separate Botleys as speaking characters etc can't believe someone Is reading this dreck right now...
Part of it is I've always been someone who enjoys coming up with family trees and pointless headcanons and then can't let go of them lmao since I was 13 it was a problem and you can see it in even short fics (red moonlight, three boys etc not to mention the entirety of my Romeo and Juliet production). Like for example the worst offender (besides the Victarion thing where I was biased and wanted to include the oaf because I love him) is definitely the little trip to Iron Holt where I was attached to the little connection I came up with for Aladale Wynch (why is an ironborn knight at the Wall? backstory) and also to Calla Orkwood/Wynch a true 13 year old girl OC produced entirely by my heart and ass. And then after I came up with that I felt the need to continue on that thoroughline so it would be a feature of the fic and not one random extraneous episode.
On the other hand I really do think this fic needed the reader feel as violently dunked as Theon was in this social whirlwind, thematically, it's important to show/don't/tell that Theon is experiencing this kind of sudden and jerky reintegration to this culture, all these new opportunities for healthy peer relationships, mentor relationships, mentee relationships that should more than make up for losing one younger friend but don't, all these responsibilities and social obligations as a young lordling that should make him feel justified in coming back but don't, all this praise and acceptance for his actions which should make him feel better but don't, all this exposure to the consequences of the Greyjoy rebellion that should make him feel righteous about wronging the Starks in return but don't. Its stuff a more skilled writer could definitely have conveyed in tighter fewer scenes but I personally enjoy the confusing whirlwind approach!
(I also wasn't the best I fear at making this return different enough from canon- It felt like there were a lot more new meetings that should have been reunions, now its three years and not ten. But that also makes partial sense to me - he missed three years of passage from childhood to adolescence and now his world has opened abruptly beyond the confines of the Island of Pyke rather than gradually)
Overall though this reminds me of a musing I periodically have, which is that the novel/short story form is just... Bad at conveying the social sphere of extroverted characters or very connected characters (which I wanted Theon to be, Theon is very extroverted imho). You constantly see this criticism with characters who are characterised as popular but have three besties or unintentionally come across as being detached from everyone. GRRM, definitely one of the authors who should not be encouraged to add more characters and background details, constantly gets comments on how his court settings feel empty or how his characters who you wouldn't expect to be loners only have one friend outside of family. In 2021 my sister was having one of those downswings in social situation you have when you're out of sync with your former group in how fast you're going thru puberty and I was researching middle grade books that had less emphasis on rigidly insular groups and codependent bestie bonds and more on relationships developing organically and situationally and there wasn't really anything besides Anastasia Krupnik and thats a serial
(Ikmka is def a middle grade novel among other genres tbh)
Or like recently I've been struck by how well Ljudmila Petrushevskaja does it in short stories but she definitely also does it by confusing whirlwind technique; also Emma and Persuasion are good examples to me but not exactly everything that Austen writes is. Its just this very delicate balance of lots of people all of whom are known and some kind of relationship exists with and who are loosely arranged in groups but you don't get the feeling every single person has an ironclad thematic reason to know the protagonist, you know. Its a really hard realism/thematic coherence balance to strike and I can never describe it until I see it

Family Reunion | Para
Featuring: Delilah, DJ, & Tucker Holt. Mentions of their parents (Jonathan & Scarlett Holt), and Tucker’s boyfriend (Cameron LaCava) Time Frame: Thanksgiving 2022 Location: New Orleans, LA // Los Angeles, CA // Boston, MA Triggers: Mentions of homophobia, biphobia, alcohol & death/loss Notes: The Holt siblings gather (over video call) for the holiday
DJ had been spending the past couple of days leading up to Thanksgiving catching up with friends and former colleagues while in LA. A former client of hers while at her old agency had invited her down for a ‘Friendsgiving’ and after some consideration, she’d accepted. While at the extravagant home and watching some of the other guests mill about, sipping beer and cocktails in small clusters, DJ had been half-heartedly watching a football game on the giant, 80″ flat screen TV. While she was happy to have been invited over and not spend Thanksgiving alone, she as a bit tired and contemplating a round of visits and ‘hellos’ before calling it an early evening and heading back to her hotel room to sleep. Or take advantage of the hotel’s heated pool for an hour.
It was at that very moment that DJ’s cellphone buzzed her hand. For a split second, she’d hoped that there hadn’t been any sort of work-related crisis happening. Thankfully, the alert was actually showing her sister’s name, photo, and a request for a video call.
Glancing around while thinking quickly, she excused herself from the party’s main indoor area and slipped into the nearest bathroom, locking the door behind her. As she lowered the toilet lid and sat down, she answered the phone in a somewhat hushed tone, finding that her sister, Delilah, already had their brother, Tucker on the video call from his respective location.
“Hey! Happy Thanksgiving, Dolly!” Delilah piped up.
“Yeah, Happy Turkey Day. I love the haircut,” Tucker added, lifting his martini glass in a toasting gesture.
“Back at you both, and thanks, Tuck,” DJ replied, gibing her siblings a friendly smile.
“How’s Boston, Tucker?” Delilah asked.
“Just peachy, sis. Very historical. Way too cold to ever live here. We just finished having dinner. Cam’s family is still a little bit stuffy for my taste. Like I was regretting not wearing some pearls, but they’re nice people.”
DJ and Delilah chuckled at Tucker’s joking over the pearls. And then DJ asked, “How’s the adoption going?”
Right away, Tucker’s eyes widened and his lips stretched into a huge smile. “Amazingly! We should have our baby girl after the new year. You’re going to be aunties soooon!”
At his singsong announcement, DJ raised a hand on camera and said, “Already there thanks to Delilah but I’m happy to be an auntie again.”
Tucker gave a harmless but dismissive flick of his wrist at his sister’s technicality and then said, “Anyway, we’re so ready for her. Cam and I have been watching a lot of kids shows to prepare and Dolly? Nesting is definitely a thing. We’re not allowed to tease Delilah anymore.”
DJ rolled her eyes, while Delilah said, “Don’t worry, the baby factory over here is closed permanently. Three is plenty of kids for me. What about you, Dolly?”
DJ’s brows shot up, “Uhh, my baby factory never opened, so...”
Delilah chuckled and said, “Okay but are you seeing anybody? Are you thinking about settling down sometime soon? Maybe starting a family?”
With a sigh and a quick pause to make sure she wasn’t being overheard, DJ lowered her voice and told them both, “You do know that those things are requirements in life, right? I don’t think anything serious is happening for me right now, and I really don’t know on the kids front. I don’t exactly work the kind of job that’s conducive for the whole conventional family life.”
“Really?” Tucker questioned, tipping the martini glass to his lips. “For some reason, I thought you might want a child or two someday. If you did, I’m sure you’d figure out a way to make it work. Have it all and whatnot.”
Shrugging her slender shoulders, DJ replied, “I’m really focused on my career. And I love what I do. I’ve worked hard and love that I’m also successful at it and that’s not something I want to compromise. Besides, isn’t it a little backwards for me to jump to any sort of family planning when I’m still single? I mean, wouldn’t the Old Man keel over or ask God to smite me if I attempted having a child out of wedlock?”
Tucker couldn’t suppress an amused snort while Delilah’s face became immediately void of any amusement. With a gentle reproach, the eldest of the Holt siblings said, “Dolly...”
“What? Come on, Delilah. When has he ever approved of anything about me--who I am, what I do, any of that? I’m sure he’d have a conniption if he saw how short my hair is. And what if I were to pursue a serious relationship with another woman? Do you think it’d matter to him whether or not I’d want to have children? My relationship and any children would be abominations to him. Delilah, I know you choose not to speak ill of the man, but you only have secondhand experience to what Tucker and I went through when it came to our sexualities and Dad’s behavior towards us. I’m not ashamed of who I am or who I might end up in a relationship with. And I’m not going to submit myself or anyone important to me to his judgments.”
Taking a deep breath, DJ reminded herself to keep her voice low but she continued on. “He claims to love me but he doesn’t show it. Blowing up my phone around the holidays or his birthday, leaving me voicemails where he’s making digs or attempted guilt trips if I don’t answer or call back right away? That’s not love. Standing firm over some biblically-charged misgivings on non-heterosexuality to fuel his phobias or beliefs that two of his kids are absolutely going to hell? That’s not love. He can make the claim that he loves us but he has a horrible way of actually showing it. The only reason I’ve catered to him on any level with returning or answering calls has been for Mama, for her memory. But after this year, I’m not doing it anymore. I’ll find a different way to honor her--a way that doesn’t include his type of conditional love.”
Delilah frowned but said nothing. Tucker proceeded to down the rest of his very full martini glass.
The silence stretched on into uncomfortable territory, so DJ said, “Listen, I have to get going. I was invited to this Friendsgiving shindig and so far I’ve either been a wallflower or hiding out in a guest bathroom talking to you two. I love you both, but let’s talk again sometime before the weekend’s up, okay?”
“Sure, sure,” Tucker replied, lifting his empty glass in mock toast to the screen.
“Yeah, that’d be nice. And Dolly, Tucker, listen. Y’all know I love you, right?” asked Delilah.
“‘Course we do,” Tucker said.
DJ’s expression softened a bit but she didn’t offer her siblings a smile as she said, “I know. I love y’all too. And as much fun as hiding out in a bathroom at someone else’s party sounds, I really should get going.”
Tucker chuckled and Delilah said, “Oh, right, right! Sorry! We’ll talk again soon. Both of you take care.”
“Always,” Tucker sassed.
“Give my hellos and such to Cam, Jackson and the kids.”
Tucker and Delilah spoke confrimations over one another before all three ended the video chat. DJ sighed, thinking about the turn the conversation had taken with her siblings, namely with Delilah. She knew that, despite her eldest sister loving and accepting her and Tucker for all of who they were, her sister was by far the least resistant of their bigoted father and always tried to mend the broken bridges between them. DJ gave up actively trying to get her sister to see sense and give up said crusade, but she also wasn’t going to listen to Delilah’s attempts at getting her to even pretend to be loving towards their father. She hadn’t seen him as an actual father for a very, very long time. Thanksgiving certainly wasn’t going to change that.
Having coached actors, musicians and at one point, a local politician through public relations and putting on a strong faces when they weren’t really in the mood or mindset to, she took her own advice, slapped on a convincing smile, and washed her hands before heading out of the bathroom the rejoin the Thanksgiving festivities--and try to put the bulk of the video call behind her.

7KPP Week ~Family~
Missed Day 1, but have a post game Adie/Clarmont ficlet for Day 2 of @fyeah7kpp’s appreciation week
---
The return journey to Wellin, much to Adie’s relief, went as smoothly as such things could. Of course, her company this time might be a bit of a distraction from the smaller bumps and inconveniences. She was pretty sure her hand stayed linked with Clarmont;s the entire carriage ride to Holt, an arrangement to which he did not object.
She turned to grin at him, almost bouncing with nervous excitement, when the castle came into view. “Almost there!”
Clarmont smiled back and squeezed her hand. “I can’t wait to see your home.”
“Our home. They’re going to love you,” Adie said confidently, squeezing his hand in return. The would, because who didn’t? And they would because she did.
“I certainly hope so.” There was a teasing twinkle in his eyes. “Would be awkward if your family doesn’t approve at this juncture.”
“After we’ve already made it official?” she laughed, twisting a loose wisp of hair with her free hand. The mere fact he’d said family had warmth swirling in her chest and meant his odds were good.
The carriage pulled into the courtyard, stopped in front of the pair of figures waiting by the entrance. Clarmont beat her to the carriage door, swiftly dismounting and offering her a hand down with the biggest teasing grin he’d sported yet.
Adie rolled her eyes with a laugh, but accepted the playful chivalry, mostly because it was the fastest way out of the carriage. She eschewed decorum the second her feet hit the ground, lunging forward into the hug Henrietta offered. The head maid’s arms went around her with familiar, bruising enthusiasm, and Adie held her just as tight.
“I missed you all,” she mumbled into Henrietta’s shoulder. “So much.”
“And we, you, Ariadne,” Henrietta replied fondly. She stepped back, smoothing red-blonde flyaways behind Adie’s ears before cupping her face in both hand to examine her. “But this trip clearly agreed with you more than you expected, Countess. I’ve not seen you so happy in many years.” A sly smile aimed over Adie’s shoulder. “ I suppose I have the handsome fellow you’ve brought home to thank for that?”
Adie laughed. “Indeed you do, though I am also happy to be home.” She reached a hand back to where Clarmont watched the reunion with a smile. “This is Lord Clarmont, my husband.” The word still sent a thrill down her spine.  “Clarmont, this is Henrietta.”
She turned to greet Clifton as Clarmont nodded respectfully to Henrietta. Her chief landsman embraced her with less fervor but equal affection to his wife.
“Good to see you again, Countess,” he said, then arched a brow at Clarmont.  “I presume he treats you right?”
“More than,” she promised. “Kind and brave as he is handsome, and loves me very much just as I am. As I do him.”
“Good.” Clifton gave a satisfied nod and squeezed her shoulder affectionately before moving in to shake the new earl’s hand. Recuing him from Henrietta’s barrage of question in the process.
And Adie rescued him from both of them a moment later, citing the long journey and a desire for time alone with her new husband.
“You’ll meet he rest of the staff later,” she said as they climbed the stairs arm in arm. “But they’re the ones in charge when I’m not here, so it’s good they were first.”
Clarmont smiled. “You’ve mentioned being close to your staff, but it was still heart-warming to see in person.”
Adie nodded, tugging him past the door to their room. “I want to show you something. Henrietta stepped in to help raise me proper after my mother died. Taught me manners, decorum, all those womanly things my father couldn’t. When he... took ill, Clifton filled the role, as best he could with his station.” She let her hand slide down his arm to link their fingers again as she pulled him along. “The two of them are as much family as my parents were, and I’m glad they like you.” A grin. “Even if that wasn’t really in doubt.”
Clarmont chuckled. “I’m glad of that as well. Adie, where are we going?”
They reached her goal even as he asked. “Here.” She pushed open the door. “Not as pretty as our sunrises, but this is the best view in the place for sunsets.”
They stepped out to watch, Clarmont’s arms settling around her shoulders and his chin resting atop her head. “Still very lovely,” he murmured as the sky went purple and gold. “Thank you for sharing it with me.”
“Of course.” Adie leaned back into his chest, her wedding band flashing in the light as she covered his hands with hers. “You’re family now too.”
Clarmont hummed softly in agreement, pressing a light kiss to the top of her head before resuming his position. “So I am.”

Scream of Fear
Tumblr media
Were LES DIABOLIQUES (1955) to lock eyes briefly with PSYCHO (1960) across a crowded room before moving on with its life, the issue would be Seth Holt’s SCREAM OF FEAR (1961, Tubi, YouTube), aka TASTE OF FEAR. And let’s hope that’s the most tortured metaphor ever to issue from my demented brain. Probably written too late to be an imitation of the Hitchcock classic, the film mainly shares with it a surprise death and an advertising campaign warning viewers to watch from the beginning and not share the ending. In fact, the twists are so integral to the plot, it’s hard to give much of a plot description without spoiling the fun. You’ll have to trust me that there’s more to the story of Susan Strasberg’s reunion with a father she hasn’t seen in ten years than seems to be taking place. When she arrives, she’s greeted warmly by her stepmother (Ann Todd), who informs her that her father has just taken off on a business trip. So why does Strasberg keep seeing him in various unexpected places? Christopher Lee is on hand as the family doctor, who seems determined to prove the young woman insane, and Ronald Lewis is the hunky chauffeur who tries to help her prove she isn’t. They’re all perfectly adept at their roles. Strasberg’s tinny voice can be grating, but she does good specific work using her character’s wheelchair, the result of a riding injury. The real star, however, is director Seth Holt. With cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, he creates an oppressive atmosphere with tight closeups, cluttered decor and unusual camera angles. There are also wonderful tracking shots with the camera following characters while objects in the foreground seem to engulf them. This was only the second directing credit in his sadly brief career but helped establish him as one of England’s best genre directors.

Always Our Captain - Andre Braugher

“reunion”
it's a family reunion! // @clochanam (and a special shoutout to @soulmateprinciple who writes this muse)
"go speedily, conveniently and without delay, you bitch."
thea harman (virginia gardner/olivia holt) is the granddaughter of the late, great edgith harman and the daughter of the late sophia harman. she is a witch who specializes not only in healing but also in animal handling, as she finds it easier to understand and get along with animals than people.
thea is flori's maternal cousin and arguably the one she gets along with the most as thea's among the first - if not the first - to welcome flori into the night world with open arms.

Renfield and Evil Dead Rise
Renfield: Directed by Chris McKay
Renfield, the tortured aide to his narcissistic boss, Dracula, is forced to procure his master's prey and do his every bidding. However, after centuries of servitude, he's ready to see if there's a life outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness.
My thoughts on Renfield are nothing but disappointment. Renfield was onto something with its concept of Renfield breaking away from Dracula. However, this vision was muddled and buried in an unneeded cop/mafia storyline. This movie would have been much better if it had focused on this toxic breakup. Nicholas Cage and Nicholas Holt are hysterical together and have fantastic chemistry. When they were in the spotlight, it was a fun ride. Sadly, when they were absent, the movie fell apart. The action scenes are fun but are blurred by poor editing and questionable camera shots. Overall I wanted more out of this given that it had such a good concept.
My Rating: C

Evil Dead Rise: Directed by Lee Cronin
A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
I was not expecting Evil Dead Rise to be as good as it was. It's horrifying, gory and breathes new life into this iconic horror franchise. I respect this movie for not doing a complete remake of the original. They take the bare bones of the original but make the classic story their own. The horror is unsettling, bloody, and twisted, perfect for an Evil Dead movie. The horror and the tension never let go as you enter a nightmare from the Evil Dead world. A kickass performance from Lily Sullivan and an exceptionally creepy performance from Alyssa Sutherland is the cherry on top of this movie. My only disappointment is that Bruce Campbell's Ash didn't show up. However, Campbell did get a nice cameo in the movie, which was a great easter egg.
My Rating: B+
