Pre Canon Voltron headcannons Bc I Can. Part 1(?)
Keith has dyed his hair red before, (specifically before meeting Shiro and then once at the garrison to piss Iverson and Sanda off.)
Shiro knows how to give himself a (non sexual obvi) massage.
After finding out Keith’s holiday plans consisted of staying in his shared room at his foster parents, Matt and Shiro invited over for the Holt/ Shirogane-Whatever the fuck Adam’s last name is family dinner. And he hasn’t missed one sense, even when in the desert.
Keith taught Pidge how to pick a lock and how to defend herself, while Pidge taught Keith his way around a computer.
Keith knows first aid. (Bc his dad was a firefighter, he grew up in the desert, and bc he was always getting himself in trouble.)
Matt and Keith pranked Iverson and Sanda a lot (unbeknownst to everyone else because they would get in a whole lot of trouble obviously)
Matt and Keith were roommates.
On the anniversary of his dad’s death, you could find Keith under his bed frame or in some other odd place with music playing. Matt covers for him in class while Shiro and Adam ask for the day off and hang out with him, usually in silence.
Adam, Shiro, and Iverson were all in the same book club.
Adam and Shiro have the occasional double date with Sam and Colleen (it consists of Sam trying to get Shiro to call him something other than Science Officer Holt and Adam and Colleen swapping recipes)
That’s all for now

Fucking side plot that gets flashbacked to throughout the shows run (instead of just like season 7) where its revealed that Adam finally recognised who Pidge was and before she got away to the roof, he let her know he was gonna contact her mother so she knew where her kid was and in the process of this ends up informing Iverson but before they can do anything, Shiro crash lands and the pilot episode takes place and the garrison trio go missing and we watch on Earth as Adam, Veronica, Colleen and the MFE pilots work to try and discover all that Keith and Pidge discovered before the first episode and to find out what happened to them and maybe try to get them back.
I want the stakes on earth to exist throughout, an ecosystem of the Garrison to exist that the trio are aware of and interact with before they leave, so we get a better idea of the people left back on Earth and what they're doing. I wanna know their families like they do. It doesn't have to be that I get a full on list for them all but like I just want there to be this existing world they come from cause as much as I actually can't fault the first episode on a huge amount, this is one of those things cause if I was rewriting it to have the lions discovered throughout season 1, I'd need that time for something and it's something the show lacks anyway

More Adashi AU
- Adam talks to Shiro while Shiro pilots the Atlas, Adam says some words that feel like a goodbye and Shiro calls out to him. He thinks Adam is dead (Adam was able to evacuate his plane before it crashed with the Galra)
- Upon hearing that the Galra are coming, Shiro and Adam argue over Adam being involved
- Once the quartet of Matt, Adam, Shiro, and Keith are reunited Matt and Keith hound Shiro like annoying brothers for leaving Adam and Keith behind
- Adam saying the words "we're going to get you to the medbay and once you're all healed up we're going to have a sparring match where I throw you around like a rag doll" / "don't ever worry me like that again. I don't know if I can ever take a loss like that again"
-Adam infiltrates Galra forces and travels with them in space. Shiro can't believe what he sees when he thinks Adam is willingly working with Galra
-with Kerberos being considered a bust bc of "pilot error" The Garrison wants to send others into space to retrieve the Kerberos crew. Voltron crew finds Adam's ship just floating in space with no life force seeming to be inside. They investigate to find Adam on the floor and alone. Turns out there's barely enough oxygen for even a new born let alone a grown adult (bonus if Adam's ship was hit with quintessence); Shiro refuses to leaves Adam's side while he's in the healing pod
-Adam somehow being used to help power the Galras main ship that attacked earth like some Alteans were
-They never confessed their feelings so when Shiro is determined to go on Kerberos Adam just sits with his feelings and waits; both thinking they've missed their chance with the other (cue Matt, Keith and Pidge trying to get them together when they reunite)
-Soulmate/soul marks AU where Shiro and Adam do not meet until Shiro comes back from space
- (shout to Chibi-pix for this one) Adam is like a brother figure to Pidge which results in Keith and Pidge being siblings causing Iverson to lose his mind bc Keith and Pidge are Matt and Shiro 2.0s (Lord help him when an Adam 2.0 enters the picture); Adam and Shiro are blissfully aware of their siblings antics but act like they aren't
-Kuron goes to Earth and kidnaps Adam
-Shiro is forced to choose between Keith and Adam
- They start off as a one-sided rivalry until an incident forces them together and they start to get to know each other
-more patient Adam and reckless Shiro
-Adam joins the Blade of Marmora where he runs into Keith (Adam still thinks Shiro is dead) Adam is with him in the two years in the Abyss and reunites with Shiro when Keith returns to the Paladins
-Eros!Adam and Psyche!Shiro
-Teen Titans AU where Shiro is Cyborg and Adam is Bumblebee (points for Kuron being Brother Blood)
-Camp Half-Blood demigod Shiro and Camp Jupiter Half-Blood Adam
-Adam and Matt get buried alive and Shiro is a reck trying to find them (Adam) so they don't die
-Baker/Cook Adam and Shiro who can't boil water without setting it on fire
-Adam and Shiro swap roles (neither are dead though)
-Shiro and Adam meeting once when they were kids but not meeting again until they are older. Both remember but Adam acts like he doesn't recall it at all
-Both are cadets and one has a significant other while the other is pining hard (s/a with the significant other doesn't last long, significant other also happens to be mutuals with Adam and Shiro)
-Shiro trains and gets a bad bruise on his neck that everyone thinks is a hickey until Adam returns from a trip (cue Keith defending Shiro but the other Paladins and co think maybe Shiro cheated)
-Shiro confesses to Adam one night but acts like he doesn't remember it then he and Adam spiral in their feelings

Colleen had spent the last several minutes arranging the small, brightly wrapped packages on the dining table in the Holts’ private suite onboard the Atlas. This wasn’t exactly where she expected to celebrate her daughter’s eighteenth birthday. Colleen never could have imagined that her youngest child would have been fighting in an intergalactic war at such an age, or that Colleen herself would be out in space with the rest of their little family instead of planning a quiet little party at their home.
She placed the smallest of the packages on top of the stack of colorful boxes. It was wrapped in bright blue paper and tied with a green ribbon. Curious, Colleen glanced at the card. It read “With Love, From Lance.” She smiled to herself, wondering what the gift could be. She knew Katie loved all of the other Paladins like older siblings, but with Lance things had been different. She always sat close to him at meetings and at mealtimes. She blushed when Lance complimented her and pouted when her father set a curfew on her late night video gaming sessions with him. ”Leave the door to your quarters open when that boy is here,” her husband had insisted.
Boy? She thought. No, he was a young man, Lance was nearly twenty, and was of an age to have a more serious view of dating and relationships.
More than once Colleen had noticed that Lance had casually slipped one of his long arms around her daughter’s slight shoulders when the Paladins gathered with her family to have a movie night. She also noticed that Katie wrapped her arms around Lance, clinging to him and affectionately nuzzling his chest, a gesture that always made him smile and draw her even closer to him.
Colleen had always thought they were cute together and had hoped for the longest time that their friendship would blossom into something more. She smiled at the recollection of how Lance had won a stuffed Green Lion for her when they went to the Clear Day carnival together. Katie cuddled with it every night, falling asleep with it in her arms.
Sam, on the other hand, wondered what his daughter saw in the boy.
“He’s not as smart as Hunk,” Sam had observed after Katie had gone to bed one evening. “Why would she like a boy who isn’t even close to being her intellectual equal?”
“Shh! She’ll hear you,” Colleen whispered.
”She’s asleep,” Sam replied. “I still think that she and Hunk would make a good match though. He’s a very bright young man—“
“Who’s in love with a very sweet Balmeran girl,” Colleen reminded him. “Katie has told me things about Lance. Did you know that he nearly got himself killed while saving Coran from an explosion? Lance was practically comatose from his injuries, but he woke up momentarily just to take a shot at Sendak when he was trying to hurt our daughter. Did you know about that?” Sam shook his head. “Did she tell you what Lance did when they were captured by Galra Pirates? Those fiends wanted to torture our child, but Lance wouldn’t allow them to come anywhere near her, so they gave him a good thrashing instead.” Colleen stood with her hands on her hips, as if daring Sam criticize Lance for his heroics.
”No,” Sam paused to consider this new information. “She didn’t tell me about any of that.” He didn’t comment on their daughter’s choice of boyfriends any further, but Colleen was still half-convinced that Sam still believed that no one was good enough for their little girl. Not wanting an argument, Sam changed the subject to what Matt had been doing on his latest missions with the Rebels.
Their son was, at the moment, far away from this sector, fighting in a battle in a distant solar system whose name Colleen couldn’t even pronounce.
So much of their time together as a family had been cut short by the apparent tragedy that had befallen Sam and Matt on the Kerberos mission. The grief she experienced at their mysterious disappearance consumed her, then was multiplied when Katie ran away from home to join the Garrison under a false identity. She later found out that her daughter and her friends had been abducted by a sentient spaceship and taken through a wormhole to the other end of the universe. Her only daughter was lost among the stars for three years, and when Katie finally returned home, Colleen could barely recognize her. Her long hair was shorn, her beauty concealed by the disguise of her brother’s old round spectacles. Most shocking of all, she was clad in the hard shell of some high-tech armored alien spacesuit. Although she had returned home physically unharmed, Colleen knew her the little girl she had raised was gone forever.
Every time she watched Katie fall asleep in her narrow bunk, she could momentarily forget that her daughter was a confident young woman who was, among other things, a Paladin, a scientist, and a veteran of far too many battles in the endless war that had been tearing the universe apart centuries before she had been born. Losing this war might mean the end of humanity’s freedom and possibly its very existence. Of course, they weren’t just fighting for Earth’s freedom, but for the liberation of all of the sentient beings that the Galra Empire had enslaved over the last ten thousand years. Defeating Honerva was all any of them could think about these days.
And here she was, making preparations for her youngest child’s birthday party. Colleen sat down at the table and covered her mouth to stifle a sob. But there was no one around to hear it. Sam and Katie had already departed for the mission briefing. She let the tears flow only when she was alone. Then, in order to face the day, she straightened her uniform and donned the steely facade of the brave officer and loyal crew member that she had to present herself as. She wiped the corners of her eyes and hastily departed for the main conference chamber.
[Pidge’s 18th birthday doesn’t go as planned in this fic. This is an excerpt from chapter 2 of one of the best multi chapter fics that I have ever written. Angst, drama, space battles, sword fights, friendship, loyalty, courage, humor, romance, and an epic conclusion with a satisfying epilogue. What are you waiting for? Go read it! ]

When Keith went to the Holt house for asking their permission to marry Pidge, he espected the same speech of when he had started dating her (Like treat her like a princess, don't even hurt her...), instead Sam and Colleen asked him something very strange.
"Single or double modulation?"
He froze... He didn't do nothing about modulating arguments, so he answered with a italian phrase that learned from Pidge.
"I...I... non lo so...?"
What can I say? Keith could marry her...

After getting ideas for a vampire AU where the Holts are vampires, minus Sam, who is a human. But, they don’t drink blood; they take energy/life force from plants.  @rubymoon-snape suggested drawing the vampires in their bat forms. And it was the best decision. Thank you, Ruby! I adore these buggers.
Anyway, I hope y’all enjoy this one! Until next time!

Krolia and Colleen parallels
Mother that leaves her son, daughter that leaves her mother DO YOU SEE THE DOTS CONNECTING???
anyway snippet for VLD Hiraeth AU! Check out the tag for context!
...
Colleen had always loved the quiet. The world blurred around her when she was focused, her ears ringing in the silence in a way that soothed her rushing thoughts, allowing her to finally breathe and think in peace, to perfect her research in a way that articulated her thoughts that often moved too fast for even her to track. Colleen was a quiet person, although certainly not shy. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind which tended to be a bad habit when her mouth got ahead of her. Which it usually did.
But Sam always helped.
He would squeeze her shoulder or brush their knuckles together, listening to whenever she was fed up with the latest Garrison bullshit. She had never felt pressured to talk, but he had always made it clear he would love to listen. The soundless air had always been comfortable to her, only occasionally broken by Katie flipping a page or Matt typing on his keyboard.
It was always quiet and she had never minded.
Until now.
Now it was suffocating, her heartbeat thundering too loud in the emptiness. Something had seeped into the air, making it hard to breathe without Sam, Matt and Katie beside her. Their heartbeats no longer echoed alongside her own and Colleen had never heard anything louder than the absence of those sounds. It was like everything she was, everything she had been, a mother, a wife, a scientist, had been shattered into pieces she couldn’t even hope to connect again.
The pieces that had once made up who Collen had been were scattered to the stars, spread so far across the galaxy that not even gravity could force them back together again. And god did she try to put it back together again. Years upon years of obsessive research not even a clue, a hint, something, anything that Colleen could dig into without it slipping through her fingers like sand. Katie had been beside her the entire time, a constant presence at her shoulder that wasn’t enough, it wasn’t whole, but Colleen would fix it, she had to, for both of them, if she just tried a little harder-
And suddenly there was a rift she couldn’t mend between them. Colleen had pushed away her own daughter and she was so pathetic that she didn’t even realize how much time she had lost before it was already gone. Katie’s encouragements at her side were gone, turning into her own search, only growing more determined as Colleen’s despair consumed her like a vacuum, encompassing any hope she ever had of finding the rest of their family.
Colleen wondered, if she had ever thought to stop herself, if she would have seen how thin Katie had gotten. Would she have seen the way Katie wouldn’t eat until she finally made some kind of breakthrough? Would she see Katie’s eyes, bloodshot from lack of sleep, mirrored on her own face? Would she have even said goodbye, if she had noticed Katie had been leaving the house so much? Would she have wished her luck? Would she beg her to stop before the addiction she had started swallowed them both?
Guilt with more force than any black hole started to tug at the pieces that were left of Colleen. How could she have done this? Why couldn’t she be better, the better that Katie of all people, deserved? Katie who still fed Bae-Bae under the table. Katie, who loved to talk with her dad for hours about all the details of his missions, no matter how boring. Katie who would make up games and flashcards to help Matt study for his exams. Katie, who would stay up watching the stars for hours with her brother with awe on her face instead of hate, like the sky itself was somehow to blame.
And then Colleen realized she hadn’t seen Katie in a long time. She saw a girl cutting her hair with scissors clenched in her palm and amber eyes filled with star fire. The only thing left of her brother was the face they both shared. Katie had given up everything she was for her family in more ways than one. Colleen had seen her daughter destroy herself, right beside her and did nothing to stop it.
So Colleen had resigned herself to her fate. The pieces of herself with Sam and Matt had been lost to the stars, never to be seen again. But no matter how shattered and broken it had become, Colleen still fought to keep the piece of herself that Katie had. But Colleen was a hypocrite and it was too late to save them now.
Katie had been furious at even the suggestion of stopping, biting back with words like thorns that burrowed into Colleen like cutting brambles. Then she left more and more often as Colleen’s pleading grew more and more  desperate. She would only get more reckless, that much Colleen knew, when she didn’t get answers. And Colleen would be there, waiting for her daughter to come back, waiting for her son to come back, waiting for her husband to come back. That’s all she was good for, wasn’t it?
Waiting.
How sad is that? A mother who is supposed to be an inspiration for her children is placing her last hope and fears on someone who should never have to carry that burden. Colleen thinks about Katie’s team then, the only reason she let her leave, the ones who must carry that burden with her.
She thinks of an Altean boy with tan skin and bright blue eyes, making Pidge laugh for the first time in what seemed like years. She thinks of her dark skinned friend, hugging her tightly, rambling to calm her down. She thinks of the dark haired kid with violet eyes laying a hand on her shoulder.
Children, so unbearably young, with Shiro to lead them, no matter how broken he is. And the worst part of her hoped that maybe there was some chance that Katie would do the impossible. If anyone in the universe could, it would be them.
Until then Colleen would at least be productive while she waited, keeping an eye on every step the Garrison could take. She would be damned if Sanda tore one more family apart and she could have done something to stop it. It’s endless work and she loses herself in it again, helping Adam conceal his efforts to negotiate with the rebel alliance without Sanda’s interference. They had put in hard work over the years deceiving, sneaking and sabotaging. But it was all put in jeopardy when an unidentified ship entered the atmosphere.
It’s a single ship, not transmitting any sort of communication that would give away its position, but that doesn’t make Colleen feel better. It passes the satellites without any trouble, and she almost considers sounding the alarm before she recognizes the model of the ship. It’s of Galran origin, the sleek purple metal only slightly peaking through the cloud cover, undetected by any Garrison precautions. It’s the same type of transport that had been used by Blade of Marmora members to ferry civilians off of Earth before its destruction in the crossfire between opposing Altean and Galra forces.
Now that it’s in the atmosphere, and heading to the surface fast, Colleen could manually take over and cause it to crash, but she hesitates, her curiosity getting the better of her. There had been no contact with the Blade of Marmora since their arrival on the planet, not even when Keith had crash landed. Surely they  would have contacted Adam or the rebels rather than coming in unannounced? Had they come for Keith? He had been a valued member before he lost contact with them, surely they would want him back. Colleen’s heart clenched at the thought of Katie having a friend leave, but she wasn’t sure he’d want to. Not willingly, anyway.
When Keith had first come he was hostile to everyone but Shiro, and Colleen had assumed that had been the exception given their time surviving in the arenas. He used to jump at every sudden movement, quick to draw his knife with a flick of his wrist in any situation. But he has changed so much with the other Paladins, relaxing in a way that made him seem like a new person. It was still his decision to make, but Colleen couldn’t help but hope he stayed, if not for himself, than his team who had relied on him just as much as each other.
Colleen steeled herself, sending Adam a warning to her location and what she had discovered. With a blaster strapped to her belt for protection and a couple of gravity generators in case she needed to stop the ship from leaving, she headed out. Following the coordinates was simple. The ship had landed in a clear area far away from most of the crowded encampments so she treaded lightly.
The blue foliage covering the planet’s surface in this sector had always made Colleen uncomfortable with the unnatural smell of rubber and the way it crackled under feet, the sound making her cringe as she attempted to disguise her footsteps. They left an obvious trail wherever she went, changing a multitude of shades whenever they touched her feet, rippling like a sea of color. They arched out of her way seconds after her feet had already left the ground before returning to their previously dormant state, changing back to a navy color. Plants had always fascinated her, but it was so different from a home she would never see again she had long since lost her enthusiasm. She would much rather be in the greenhouses, preserving what little pieces of Earth they had left rather than traveling through the outskirts under a sickly yellow sky.
Eventually she came across the clearing, the blue vines still ensuring the ship was somewhat obscured from view. Colleen got to work quickly, attaching her devices to the landing gear of the ship and a couple more beneath the hull, ready to be activated whenever she needed. It was obvious no one was on the ship so they must have left already and Colleen began looking for clues to which direction they had headed. Other than the trail she had left behind there was no disturbance in the sensitive grasses. It was a Blade of Marmora agent since they had covered up their tracks so easily, but they had to have left behind something…
Her eyes wander above her towards the bark of the surrounding trees(if they could even be called that with more sharp spires than branches). The bark had changed from its regular russet to a bright splash of orange, although it was already starting to fade back to its original color. If Colleen had been moments later she would have lost it. Apparently even professional Blade members couldn’t hide everything. Her small feeling of victory was overwhelmed by anxiety as she realized the trail of fading colors was heading towards the camp.
She prayed with every step that her footsteps would be more soundless, or even mistaken for some kind of weird animal they hadn’t encountered yet as the trees became brighter and brighter until she was in view of one of the settlements. She froze, hand hovering over her pistol as she laid eyes on the woman in front of her. But the Galran wasn’t focused on her arrival, ears not even twitching in her direction. She was sure the agent would turn around any moment hearing Colleen’s heart beating out of her chest. Surely she had to have heard her coming?
Her heart dropped to her chest when she realized she could hear the laugh of Alice McClain’s child from here. If she looked past the back of the woman she could see the Paladins, Katie standing on the tips of her toes trying to reach the treat Lance was holding above his head. Hunk was trying to get them to stop running around, his hands full of snacks he had made for them, which wasn’t an uncommon occurrence. Keith was sitting beside him, smiling as he watched, grabbing another one while Hunk wasn’t looking. He burst out laughing as Katie elbowed Lance in the ribs, stealing her prize and running behind Keith and Hunk for cover.
It was at that moment the woman’s shoulders slumped, grief clear in her posture as her ears drooped and she turned. Before she caught sight of Colleen her face was anguished, eyes downcast and slitted in a sorrow Colleen had only seen in the mirror. But the moment her eyes landed on Colleen the expression melted off her face, narrowing into something much more somber. It was odd how much she had seen that exact look on Keith’s face when he had first come here. Colleen half expected her to react like Keith would, flinching in surprise at any stranger and immediately dropping into a fighting stance.
But the Marmoran did none of this, her face so blank and empty it was eerie. She raised her hands and Colleen realized they were more like claws. Twin streaks of darker purple ran up the sides of her face like scars, perfectly symmetrical to her yellow eyes, regarding her with indifference like she had expected this situation.
“I swear by the Trials, I have no intention of harming anyone on this planet. I came with a message.”
“If you mean that then drop your weapons,” Colleen responded in a cool headed tone, eyes not leaving the woman’s no matter how much she wanted to look behind her and make sure Katie was far away from here. She couldn’t risk any sort of fight this close to so many people, and Colleen knew as well as she did that reinforcements would be here any second.
“I have come unarmed.” The woman said in the same tone, unmoving with hands still in the air.
“Keith said no member is ever without a weapon, typically one of Luxite. Where is yours?” Colleen gauged her reaction and saw the slightest bit of that sorrow return to her eyes at his name before she broke eye contact to glance at the sheath of her belt.
“This is my message,” She slowly removed the weapon, a dagger with a unique design and a bandage wrapped around the hilt. She unraveled it before turning the handle with a glowing insignia towards Colleen in a gesture of peace. It seemed to be some sort of Galran symbol, one that she recognized on Keith’s blade as well. Colleen hesitantly took it, the dagger feeling heavier than she expected.
“Give this to him and both of you will never see me again.” The words seemed to stick in the woman’s throat, but she said them without an ounce of regret. The pieces were starting to align in Colleen’s head, making a picture she didn’t like.
“Why not give it to him yourself?” Colleen asked, not quite managing to keep the anger from her voice.
“That is none of your concern,” the woman replied evenly, lowering her hands. “I will be leaving now. Don’t expect another unauthorized visit from any Blade members again.” And with that warning she left, walking right past Colleen and not even disguising her steps. Rage unlike anything Colleen had ever felt consumed her as she turned to stare, once again, at the woman’s back.
“I knew the Blades were different from us, but I had never expected the ones who saved us from a dying planet to be the same kind of creatures that would abandon their children.”
The words stopped the agent in her tracks, feet rooted to the ground and unmoving. Colleen had a brief moment of hesitation since it would be unwise to instigate a member of the highly deadly organization they were currently allied with. Instead fury settled in her gut and she decided, no, she was going to speak her damn mind.
“I could never picture it in my head, you know. That a mother could ever just leave her child behind. It didn't make sense. It never has, to me. So I want to know why you’re leaving such an amazing boy behind and I want you to have the decency to tell him why.”
“What could you possibly know about losing the child next to you? To have him right beside you and not even know it was him? To see someone so determined to do the right thing even if it kills him. To see him struggle and suffer and not be able to do a single thing, because he wants it? To be there his whole life and not even know what he was going through. It’s pathetic… It’s weak. And he deserves better than a mother who didn’t even recognize him.”
The resignation in her voice, the hopelessness seeping out of every word only makes Colleen’s own heart sting more. Weren’t those the exact thoughts she had whenever she looked at the child she failed? Weariness suddenly takes hold, weighing heavy on her bones as her hand falls from the pistol strapped to her hip. She can’t judge her, not anymore than she does herself. She watches the Galran with her back still turned make her way back towards the ship, grass shifting out of her way from an unseen breeze as it turns a dark violet whenever her feet brush against the ground, soundless, as she disappears.

NOTTE STELLATA | Sam x Colleen Holt | One-Shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUMMARY: With a trail of unworn engagement rings behind her, Colleen strongly believes that popping the question is one thing while the commitment to matrimony is another. This is how Sam Holt succeeded. TAGS: Pining, Fluff, Domestic Fluff, Established Relationship, Marriage Proposal, Pre-Kerberos Mission, FANDOM: Voltron Legendary Defender A/Ns: This story is inspired by true events and was prompted by a song of the same name. Listening to "Note Stellata" by Il Volo while reading is optional but recommended!
Tumblr media
"Do you want us to get married?"
The question escaped like a gentle suggestion.
As if Sam were a kid inviting her to play 'house', get engaged and slip a plastic ring on one of her fingers; the glittery ones chanced upon when you buy multiple boxes of cereal. Then with a wave of a fairy godmother's wand, a magical wedding would ensue in front of a teddybear audience and a cabbage patch doll entourage.
"You may now kiss the bride." Colleen quipped as she stared into the moon-lit water.
The boats glided under the bridge while the river glistened and apparently so did Sam's eyes upon her reply. He quickly flicks a tear.
"'Freudian Slip' I presume?" Sam chuckled as he stood next to Colleen, mirroring her stance.
He knew it wasn't the response to his question but he knew she must have visualized something.
"The stars are beautiful... " Sam whispers in the whooshing breeze in hopes of breaking tension, if there be any, and get a reaction out of Colleen.
"And so are you." The woman adds with a smirk accompanied with its enunciation. One which just happens to be rather uncannily similar to how Sam did.
"It's very not quite like you to flirt so openly and that was supposed to be MY line and you know it." Sam inched closer seeking her warmth.
"But isn't it true? I remembered the first time you mentioned it," She scrunched her forehead and bit her lip as her head motions into a slow shake "god, that was embarrassing."
"It..it was?" Sam covers his eyes with his hand as he reminisced the time he waltzed with her at the Galaxy Gala.
"Well, of course Iverson eavesdropped and the rest of our batchmates joined the teasing bandwagon, nonetheless, I was flustered. It was sweet and it still is." She responds as she tries to pry Sam's hand away from his face.
It must have been how every luminary available specked the water with its reflection: everything familiar felt new...the bridge, the boats, the stars, the moon, the man.
Colleen was aware that marriage was no longer child's play. That this meant more than living in a house made of pillowforts for walls or blankets hung over two chairs for a roof. She pursed her chapped lips.
Sam noticed this gesture. He had been searching for even the tiniest sign from the woman's petite frame. The thought of spending their life together made his heart pound. He wanted to kiss her right then and there but with a deep breath and every ounce of courage to muster, he spoke.
"Colleen...my words weren't phrased correctly earlier so please let me restart." Sam clutches his left fist then loosens his grip to finally reveal a silver band encrusted with green rhinestones.
"Do you want us to grow old together?" He pauses then sets the ring on the bridge's flat, metal railing.
"Because I do." Sam then takes a few steps back and faces the car-crammed road.
It finally came to her. Why this was different from any other suitor who had asked her hand and failed.
This man, this patient man, had always given her the freedom to refuse.
"Do you want to sit and have lunch together?" NOT "Let's sit and eat together."
"Do you want to go to the Galaxy Gala and dance?" NOT "Dance with me."
"Do you want to grow old with me?" NOT "Grow old with me."
As Sam had his back turned away, he stood there quietly in deep thought. Seconds felt like an eternity as his eyes were fixated at the constellations, connecting dots to pass time.
He finally proposed and couldn't believe their relationship had come to this point.
His emotions were that of fireworks lit simultaneously -building up to burst into color then immediately dispurse only to be lit again and take to the sky.
He was finally brought back to earth as Colleen hugs him from behind. He hoped for her to utter 'yes' but she remained quiet. Sam turns to her and hugs back, his heart aching reciprocation. Colleen loosens her grip then raises her hand and like Orion's Belt, the ring graced her finger.
Overjoyed, Sam starts swaying Colleen in a semi-crushing embrace. They managed to cancel out the vehicle's honking and the stares of people who rushed past them.
"Hmmhmm..che notte..." Sam hummed.
"stellata.." They sang in unison.
It was just them, the moon, the stars and their love. Sam kisses Colleen's forehead and as she clung tighter to his warm embrace, they cried.

EPILOGUE
"MOMMY! MOMMY?"
A small boy with short, caramel-colored hair darted into the kitchen.
"May you please watch just one more episode of Little Einstein's with me? Please with an extra cherry on top?"
"All right then it's nap time, understood? Mommy still has work to finish."
"But...but Daddy said the baby will get tired! Don't get tired, Mommy!" The boy blurts as he rushes back to the living room where his father slept on the couch. Or so Colleen thought.
"Is she on her way?" Sam asks between whistling snores.
"Roger, Commander Holt. I know what to do!" Matt responds with a salute.
"Sshhh. All right. Mission is a go." Sam whispers while snoring at an even faster pace.
And upon hearing his mother's footsteps, the boy sings. "Mhmm che notte stellataaAAAAA"
The TV's voice recognition, upon indirect command, plays a song. A very familiar song.
Sam awakens from his pseudo slumber and jumps to his feet.
"Care to dance?" Sam holds out his hand.
"The baby kicked when you asked. Yes, I'd love to." Colleen curtsies.
"May I dance with the baby too??" Matt burrowed his face on his mother's belly. Sam hoists the young boy in his arms.
"You can bet your bottom dollar the baby would love too!" The Holts swayed and hummed to that sweet tune.
Hoping to the stars for the baby to be born soon.

A/Ns: Thanks for reading! Notte Stellata" is inspired by true events! My uncle proposed to my aunt (mom's sis) in a similar fashion. I thought his manner was really romantic and it's one of the inspirations for this one-shot, the music being the other. The title is a song sung by an amazing Italian trio, Il Volo and it may be familiar to fans of Japanese figure skater, Yuzuru Hanyu, who performed a skate program to it last year if (I'm not mistaken) and it was a few months ago I realized that it perfectly suits Sam and Colleen.
Hopefully, my future works exceed the standard word count. Please feel free to leave comments on what I can do to improve. Thank you for reading!

voltron is a kids show for babies who are babies and like giant robots but. a year? a year to topple an empire thats dug its slicing claws into over half the known galaxy? its an impossible task made sillier by such an impossible hyperbole. a year?
keith is going to be thirty before hes walking back into that shack. lance's mom is going to get her boy back covered in scars. a map of the galaxy in pale, hairline slits over his skin. colleen holt is going to leave her latest tenure at the local grieving-widow's-support-group, sixty and tired, to find her children sitting in the kitchen. hunk's parents are going to see a man where they lost a boy. not a man of the early 20s variety, a man, with dark stubble and strength in his arms and shadows in his eyes. shiro's parents will be seeing a stranger. shake the hand of the chiseled war veteran, and feel the way the metal slides, smooth, over your skin.
i want the return to earth to be like wearing clothes that dont fit. pulled from your childhood dresser, well-worn and well-loved and impossibly small. tight around your broad adult shoulders and scarred arms. the sky is blue, and the ocean is salty, and life has gone on without you. its not a matter of "you changed, and your home didnt". quite the opposite. your parents had other children. your siblings got married. your grandparents died. your home-- and the people you left there-- changed. but you changed, too. and you and your home changed in opposite directions. your nieces and nephews dont know your face. your parents cant stop looking at the scar on your neck. your siblings ask you what happened, and there is no answer, because there is no way to say that everything happened. you lived a whole life in the stars. and they lived a whole life down here, on the ground.
[shrugs] or maybe you walked into an empty shack after twelve years
