Meet Fujifilm's New X100VI Digital Camera

While some might argue that a majority of consumer-grade photography nowadays is now mostly achieved through the use of smartphones, it goes without saying that there's still a sizeable population of enthusiasts and professionals who'd still rather get their photography done via a dedicated camera. This has resulted in some rather impressive hardware from the biggest names in the industry, including Fujifilm. With that in mind, the company recently unveiled the launch of the Fujifilm X100VI digital camera, which boasts some pretty cool features. The camera is the latest addition in Fujifilm’s X Series line of digital cameras, and Fujifilm says that the new model offers exceptional image quality, in addition to its compact size and lightweight profile, as well as Fujifilm’s colour reproduction quality.  Camera Design and Features Fujifilm says that the top and bottom of the X100VI's body is built from aluminium which is pressed and machined for sharp edges, while the surface is finely blasted for a smooth texture in addition to the anodised aluminium on its surface. The camera also features an LCD monitor for media viewing and playback which can be stored in a fully flat position, and also comes with touch support. Additionally, the control buttons on the back have been moved to a position that is easy to operate with the right hand. As the sixth-generation model in the X100 Series, the X100VI comes with the new 40.2 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, as well as a high-speed X-Processor 5 image processing engine. The camera also includes a newly-developed in-body image stabilisation function, with up to 6.0 stops. Fujifilm says that this is the first time that this feature has been incorporated in an X100 Series product, without a considerable increase in size and weight. Going back to the camera's hardware, the 40-megapixel CMOS 5 HR sensor inside is designed to allow more light to be captured in comparison to its predecessors, as well as native ISO 125 support. The X100VI also comes with a total of 20 "Film Simulation" modes, including a new ‘REALA ACE’ mode with a wide range of different tones. The camera also incorporates an autofocus prediction algorithm for reliable focusing that works even on moving subjects, with subject detection autofocus to accurately track a range of subjects. Fujifilm says that its developed using deep-learning AI technology, allowing it to detect wildlife, vehicles, and more. Other Details The X100VI also includes an ‘Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder’ that lets users switch between the optical viewfinder (OVF) and the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The latter is equipped with a high-resolution OLED panel with around 3.69 million dots for a clear visual user experience. The camera comes with a built-in ‘Electronic Range Finder’ (ERF) function allows a small EVF to be simultaneously displayed on the OVF, which can allow photographers to capture a subject in the OVF and subsequently magnify the in-focus area in the smaller EVF, making it convenient for snapshots and such. For video recording, there's built-in support for 6.2K resolution 30P movie recording that also supports tracking AF function during recording. One of the X100VI's most handy features comes in the form of Frame.io Camera to Cloud support, allowing users to wirelessly connect to an active internet connection, authenticate to Frame.io, and automatically upload photos and videos online right after creation, speeding up a user's workflow process. Pricing and Availability The X100VI will be sold in Black and Silver models, and will be available in the UK from 28 February 2024 from authorised retailers and the Fujifilm House of Photography in London starting at £1,599 including VAT. There will also be a special edition of the camera to celebrate Fujifilm’s 90th anniversary year, which will be available starting on 6th April at £1,934. Photography in London Week 9 Blog

I chose to look at Daido Morayama's photo series, Another Country in New York (1971-1974). Morayama took photos of life around Manhatten, New York. He links them because of the color and tone, as they are all in black and white. He also shot all the images on a half-frame camera , which cropped the image and decreased the resolution which affected the photo series's aesthetic.

Moryama discusses how he had to balance his curiorsity of New York City, his interests of his heros William Klein and Andy Warhol, and the US Military's occupation following the war. Morayama discusses his curiosity about the city and his interest in the overwhelming enviroment of Manhatten. He continued his interest by walking up and down the same streets , exploring and taking photos naturally, often not even looking into the view finder . This natural way of taking photos captures the energy of Manhatten and its all-consuming curiosity.

Accident 12: Oct. 21, 1969. I chose this photoseries because it caught my attention with its undeniable intensity. The photos are all blurry and out of focus , often without the subject from and center. They are also also all in black and white with high contrast, further distorting the images. Moriyama's message is about the street protests and how he was able to be active to continue doing his job. I think these photos show the intense nature of protests. You need to have the exhibition texts to understand the photo's message. When I looked at the photo before reading the text, I didn't realize that these were photos of a protest without having the context. The title made me think of just a car accident rather than a whole event but once I read into it, I could understand . This photo style doesn't remind me of anyone.

This photo stood out to me because of the repeated pattern and how aesthetically pleasing it is to look at. The focus of the photograph is the uniform cans. The photo's composition includes lots of symetry within the cans as well as lines with the shelves. This photo is also a heavily contrasted black and white image which makes the logos on the cans really pop in an almost cartoonish way. This is a photo of a V8 Display in a shop, to me this photo represents overconsumption and having an excess of product in our stores. I do wish there was more background to help me understand this photo better as the title didn't necessarily help. However when I first looked at this photo it made me think of Andy Warhol's pop-art photos.

I chose this photo because the whole series just stuck out to me I really like the subjects of each photo I think they are really interesting and strange. These photos were taken in Tokyo in 1990 throughout the year. These photos are very authentic and natural but still very artistic. I don't think you need the exhibition text to appreciate the images but I do think it helps you understand the artists vision more. I also don't think the photos need to be shown all together to make sense I think they can be separated and still understood. These photos don't remind me on anything in particular.

The Londoners:

One thing about London life is the insane amount of time you spend on public transport getting from point A to point B. I really find it interesting how the tube is so chaotic but so orderly at the same time. There are masses of people but somehow they are all calm. I took this photo coming home from my internship to show the stampede of people coming out of the tube durning rush hour. I picked this photo specifically because I like the lighting and the lines on the ceeling as I feel like it added something extra to the photo. I also liked that the photo came out blurry because I was walking so fast to stay up with the crowd, I think this makes it more natural.

Week five - The Centre For British Photography

London Street Markets 1960s-1970s, Dorothy Bohm

The artist’s intent:

In my opinion, there isn't a profound message conveyed through these photographs. It seems that Bohm simply wanted to capture the interesting and enjoyable aspects of London. However, it is also possible that this collection depicts the markets' diversity, ambiance, and stories. Some of the shots depict scenes that people tend to overlook without really appreciating or reflecting on, but Bohm's artwork allows the viewer to delve deeper into this bygone era.

The techniques:

The framing and point of view capture candid and real moments. Bohm expertly creates a casual look with natural lighting and high contrast. Her use of black and white adds to the vintage mood of the photos and makes them more engaging.

My criteria:

I think the series is good. The photos do a great job of replicating the true emotions and essence of the markets, they are capable of conveying a lot of aspects all at the same time including the stories, time, and human experience of these places. The photos do seem to convey Bohm's message too. They show a blend of elements of market life to make them look familiar and relatable, like a snapshot from Bohm's memory.

The effect:

These photos create a more complete and coherent narrative when viewed as a series. They give the viewer a greater framework with more context, you get to see a diversity in the subjects, mood, and surroundings in the markets. It shows how different yet similar the experiences are across these markets, and how they relate to our current day markets.

Impact of written information:

There wasn’t a lot of information mentioned in the written piece, but thecontext of Bohm's early life, improved the comprehension of the images. It helps the viewer create an image of her and delve into her motivations, personal background, and the circumstances in which these photos were taken; which definitely makes the series more meaningful and enjoyable.

My photographs

My series tells the story of "Fragile Truce". The series opens with a tense interaction between two cats, which is quickly interrupted by the presence of a third cat. This heightens their stress and fear even more. As the conflict reaches a tipping point, it becomes clear that a clash is imminent. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs when the second cat recognizes the approaching disaster and realizes that it too can become a victim of its own plot. Therefore, it chooses non-confrontation, resulting in a hesitant but significant de-escalation of the fight. The series ends with an unsteady ceasefire in which all three cats sit peacefully, no longer hostile but yet suspicious of each other, creating a fragile truce. In essence, this story of the stray cats' journey from violence to a ceasefire resonates with our experiences with conflicts and resolutions, and most importantly the fragile nature of peace. This is multifaceted, and can be seen as a step towards coexistence or the uselessness and unfairness of some ceasefires.

Thoughts before a date 15/01/2019

The thing about dating is, I’m always apprehensive about it. I worry about getting my hopes up and getting too excited. I have this tendency to start day dreaming about all the things that could go right, before anything has even begun. I’m especially cautious of this since C. Even when meeting him, I didn’t have much faith in things working out, but as things went on and he started behaving in tempting sweet false promises, I couldn’t help but be naive and dive heart first into the hopeful pool of his empty words.

At the same time, I don’t want every boy I meet to feel they having to pick up my broken pieces or tear down walls they never built. I want to give every boy the same opportunity, the same open mind and genuine smile. I’ve heard that once your heart has been broken once, you never quite love the same. Never as pure, never as trusting, never as sincere. I’ve yet to have my heart broken and I still feel just as cynical of everything as someone who has. I don’t think that’s fair. I really just want to be able to share myself with someone on a whole-some level.

That being said, I’m going back to my resolution for 2019. To be more present. To take things as they come. I shouldn’t day dream about the future, I shouldn’t have expectations and I shouldn’t be cynical. I should just enjoy things as they happen.

I have a date on Thursday. He’s a photography student who goes Westminster – The Uni I would have gone to. Incidentally, his second choice was Falmouth. I’ve searched him up and found him on Facebook. His music taste is questionable, and he does some pretty crazy stunts for photos in high places that gives me anxiety. He’s quite into street wear and looks like a typical London boy. He’s not really the boy I have in my head. He’s planned a date to the photographer’s gallery and then a coffee at the Museum of cameras. – He may not be my dreamboat, but he’s definitely planned my dream date!

In all honesty, I’m going there as if I’m meeting a friend, I feel like we could certainly be that at the very least. And instead of dating people and never seeing them when things fail, I should really just use dating as an opportunity to network and make friends. – If things fall through, at least I get a friend or a new muse. And if things go well, I get boyfriend!

Anyhow, I think I’ll stop thinking about it so much, and just enjoy whatever life has planned for me.

1.1…Identify the characteristics of digital imaging and printing Managing and organising your digital files is an essential addition to the skills in professional or amateur photography, whether for fine art or commercial images. Essentially, you upload your image files from the camera’s memory card via a USB cable to your computer.

Then you organise, edit and manage them for display in a digital format (e.g. websites, social media) or an analogue physical format (e.g. art exhibition or glossy print magazine).

Each digital image comprises a collection of pixels (picture cells). The number of pixels per image can determine the photo’s quality/resolution. The higher the resolution, especially at the ideal 300 dpi (dots per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch), the more detailed the image is and therefore enlargement is easier.

2.1…Produce digital images to achieve solutions to identified goals My images are stored on SanDisk memory cards, which can have a storage capacity as high as 1TB (1,000 GB). I currently us a 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro for my Nikon D200 camera. SanDisk is a subsidiary of Western Digital, which is famous for its hard drives that store large archives of photographic images. Engine Creative has reinvented the missing person poster – re-thinking the standard design and introducing a high-impact live portrait – for UK charity Missing People to coincide with International Missing Children’s Day.

The striking, high-tech digital posters show a ‘live’ image of the missing person appearing to move their eyes, smile and make facial expressions. They feature three people, Leah Croucher, Finn Layland-Stratfield and Alexander Sloley, who are currently missing in the UK. 

The innovative posters, which feature photography enhanced and animated by AI and machine learning, go live on Ocean Outdoor digital outdoor screens in London on May 25th, International Missing Children’s Day. 

A QR code is also incorporated into the poster, allowing people to share the poster quickly and easily on their social channels, to amplify the impact.

The creation of the posters was informed by behavioural science which shows that people’s engagement with and memory of an image is enhanced by a larger and better resolution photo, a live image (instead of a static one), a smiling face (instead of a non-smiling one), and less accompanying information. 

Raising empathy among viewers of the missing person poster boosts their engagement with that poster and, in turn, the likelihood of them taking positive action to help, behavioural science shows. 

Jo Youle, Chief Executive of Missing People commented: “70,000 children and young people are reported missing every year in the UK, and many more go unreported. Missing People is there for anyone affected, every day of the year.
