The Religious Implications of GotG vol. 3
So, it's Easter, and while I've got a lot of stuff to work on and things to do, I wanted to take the time to discuss the utterly insane things Guardians of the Galaxy volume three has done to my brain chemistry. After seeing @adamwarlock's post here, I've been thinking about just how many religious themes there seem to be in James Gunn's magnum opus. From a villain with a god complex to Rocket Raccoon becoming my new favorite satanic archetype maybe, this is gonna be a deep dive into everything I've picked up from the trailers so far.
So, let's start with the implications of that post I linked: "some corners of the galaxy consider (The High Evolutionary) God".
Tumblr media
Now, the High Evolutionary has always had a theme of 'playing god' in the comics, what with his whole deal being creating sentient life from animal experiments, but in the MCU, his connections to Christian notions of religion are a lot more fascinating. For starters, his goal is stated to be wanting to create a "perfect society", which you'll notice looks a lot like suburban Bible Belt America, albeit with a lot more hybrid animal-people.
Tumblr media
Now, in the comics, he uses Earth animals as a basis for his new lifeforms because he was once a normal human named Herbert Wyndham. He eventually traveled into space to continue his experiments on his own world, later adopting Adam Warlock (this will come back later). Given his desire to make himself more powerful in the movie, this makes him an interesting counterpart to MCU!Peter Quill, who was born with Celestial (ie. godly) power and left Earth not by choice.
Now, there are a few things they changed from the comics, his connection to Rocket being the most significant in the context of this story. While Halfworld performed similar experiments on Rocket and the other uplifts, the H.E had nothing to do with the planet. And while I'll get back to why his connection to Rocket is significant, as well as what I said about Adam, I want to get into another major change: his design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we have the comics design on the left and the movie design on the right. But isn't his movie look almost priestly? Almost... familiar...?
IT'S FUCKMOTHERING ENRICO PUCCI WITH THE STEEL CHAIR
Tumblr media
Okay, JoJo references aside, the High Evolutionary's connections to Adam Warlock definitely add to the whole religious overtones. I mean, a guy who's considered God has a perfect creation literally named "Adam", trying to create a perfect world? This shit writes itself. But if you consider a few additional facts, this takes on a pretty wild meaning. For starters, Adam has been stated to be relatively naive and innocent, unknowledgeable of the universe.
Tumblr media
But where this gets interesting is that, based on Rocket's absence from most group shots during what is clearly being billed as the midsection of the movie (spacesuits scene, that fight where they're all in orange, the team arriving on Halfworld) that he possibly is captured by Adam and brought back to his creator for additional experimentation. Shots of someone implied to be Rocket on the operating table and Gamora carrying him to the ship half-naked serve as further evidence of a rescue mission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But if he's captured by Adam Warlock, that means he has the opportunity to tell Adam what his creator is really planning. He has the chance to tell him how he was made and what the High Evolutionary's "perfect society" is built upon: the blood of innocent creatures he'd deemed imperfect. This could be what changes Adam, what makes him turn against his god and his Garden of Eden.
The voice of the devil on his shoulder.
Tumblr media
Edit: I forgot to mention this wild coincidence! Gunn once said Rocket was inspired by Frankenstein's monster. It makes sense on the basic level of a tragic science experiment abandoned by his creator, but it gets even more bizarre. In the novel, the monster identifies with Satan in the book Paradise Lost, making him the same sort of tragic figure as Lucifer. Rocket too was an imperfect creation cast out by the "god" who made him. In this light, it's undeniable that yes, Rocket Raccoon is as much a satan figure as Adam Warlock is space Jesus.

Can we just take a second to appreciate how James Gunn and the other vol.3 writers managed to weave together the origins of rocket perfectly with that of the High Evolutionary?
In the comics they were completely unrelated to each-other. But if I handent read the og Rocket comic miniseries, I would’ve 100% Rocket and HE’s origins were connected from the start with how naturally they fit together in vol.3.
Like??? Marvel?? You’re telling me, for nearly half a century, you had an evil/morally grey space mad scientist who’s entire shtick is genetically modifying animals into human like anthro versions of themselves, and another, completely separate, unrelated character who’s shtick is he’s a genetically modified anthro raccoon from space??? And yet nobody, NOBODY, not a single person, let alone writer, at your office thought; “hey! Why don’t we just retcon rocket’s origin so that the high evolutionary created halfworld and the genetically modified animals there!”??? It took the freaking Slithers guy of all people in the year of our Lord 2023 to connect those dots????

Sociopath Profile: MCU High Evolutionary
Tumblr media
From the 2023 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Played by Chukwudi Iwuji
Iwuji outright described the High Evolutionary as sociopathic and narcissistic. And after watching the film, he was not wrong. As Rocket's creator, he shows an absolute indifference to the suffering he causes all for the sake of advancing his goal of a perfect universe.
[SPOILERS BELOW]
His ego being completely off the charts is something that is abundantly clear whenever there is something that challenges it. He's so peeved at the idea that Rocket was able to fix the problem with Batch 90 that the High Evolutionary couldn't that he went on a massive tantrum about it while failing to reconcile the idea that someone was smarter than him. Not to mention the fact that he does everything he can to create what he thinks is the perfect society. Any opposition he receives will be met with extreme anger.
"There is no god! That's why I stepped in!"
In conjunction with that, it provides him with an extreme pettiness problem as well. The High Evolutionary will do everything he can to make sure that people know that he is the smartest and most important person in the room. About fixing the aggression issue, he looks like he's having a severe panic attack because someone figured out something he couldn't.
And I think we can be upfront with him having a complete lack of empathy for those around him. He doesn't care about the horrific experiments he puts creatures through in order to make them perfect in his eyes. He has razed entire civilizations because they didn't live up to his standards without a shred of remorse and will dispose of entire batches of test subjects when they aren't useful anymore. Not to mention that insubordination can be met with lethal behavior. He kills Lila in front of Rocket after knowing he would attempt to escape and his reaction to Rocket's sorrowful cries is to mock him for it out of annoyance.
It's all for his selfish idea of what he wants out of his experiments. He won't listen to anyone when they tell him that what he is doing is ludicrous. Especially when his obsession with capturing Rocket becomes to his detriment. The most telling thing is that he doesn't care about the well-being of his tests when they don't live up to his standards. His experiments serve no benefit to anyone other than him. Of all the things he does, none of it has any true purpose.
"You didn't wanna make things perfect... you just hated things the way they are." - Rocket
He does know to appear cordial when he wants. When he was showing Rocket Counter-Earth, he actually came off like a loving parent and not the heartless butcher that he is. When discussing things with Star-Lord for the first time, he is calm and polite to him even when Peter becomes increasingly hostile about it. He's also extremely nonchalant about the fact neither Rocket nor his friends will be on Counter-Earth.
And despite his status as a scientist (allegedly), he has a surprising lack of emotional control. He is prone to fits of rage when he doesn't get what he wants and that can result in some horrific acts of violence. It also causes some impulsivity when things go too far out of his control. His attempts to capture Rocket to the detriment of his ship and his resources show he doesn't exactly have the best skills for long-term planning.

No MCU movie villain has ever invoked a feeling of sheer hatred that I feel for this monster.
10/10 amazing portrayal of the character and brilliant performance, easily one of my favorite villains in the entire franchise.
Thank you Mr. Gunn for absolutely destroying me emotionally 🙏

Adam Warlock and Eve Warlock are in the clutches of High Evolutionary who intends to absorb the powers from the former (Adam) and transfer it into the latter (Eve). Once the power transfer is complete, High Evolutionary orders Eve Warlock to take the Soul Gem and put Adam down but she refuses. Instead, Eve Warlock turns against High Evolutionary and fights him while Adam Warlock slowly wakes up. The two Warlocks fight High Evolutionary but he was too strong for them. Eve Warlock makes up for her misdeed by transferring the powers back to Adam with a kiss. Pip the Troll and Gamora arrive but they sit on the sidelines to watch the fight. Now that Adam Warlock has his powers back, the two Warlocks fight High Evolutionary to a stand-still until the latter (High Evolutionary) disappears. Adam Warlock offers Eve to join him and his friends into the Infinity Watch but she declines.

Truly now, Warlock? Gaze at me - and answer! Has one who has purity like unto a God - yes, and innocence, too - has he found a lasting good upon this planet? Speak truth now! Have you? Yes - a hundred times - YES! I have tasted it in my veins!
