lee suyeon reaching for han juwon and juwon stepping back
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lee younghee reaching for lee dongsik and dongsik reaching back
it's the way, both mothers are below, reaching up for their sons, while their sons are on a higher, elevated place.
it's the way, there's a barrier too. for juwon, the barrier is on him. he had expressed want to go down, to cross the barrier, to go to his mother but decided against it, stepped back away from the barrier even. for dongsik, the barrier is on his mother, the gate, preventing younghee from properly reaching and helping her son.
or. there are barriers on all four of them. juwon with the railings. suyeon with the words she uttered just when juwon was about to go to her "will you let me go if i leave juwon here?" which she's the one who put that barrier. younghee with the gate. dongsik with the officers holding him back from reaching his mother.

My Five Headcanons for Beyond Evil (because I apparently just enjoy 🎶 pain and suffering 🎶)
1.) It’s almost five years before Dongsik can go visit Jeongje in the mental institution on his own. He’s learned what the limits of his mercy are, and so for those first five years he brings people with him when he goes. It’s usually just him and Jihwa, so it’s not bad; they sit together in an atrium open to visitors and talk for a while about what’s new in Manyang while Jeongje sketches. During one particularly bad day, Juwon’s lingering insecurity and guilt complex makes him confront Dongsik over whether his own offers to come along to these visits have been rejected because it would be Dongsik sitting with two reminders of Yuyeon’s death: the son of the man who ran over his sister, and the other man who ran over his sister. Dongsik explains (gently) that his worry is over triggers of a different kind. Because back when they were still flirting with (investigating) each other, he’d called in a few favors to figure out certain sealed parts of Juwon’s family history. During visiting hours, the atrium is full of institutionalized women who are about his mother’s age, as well as their visiting families.
2.) Kwon Hyuk is a survivor. Ambition requires adaptability. He bounces back from setbacks and disappointments (like his mentor/father figure), and he cuts people out of his life if they threaten his progress forward (see: previous). Rich people are tools that can be used or discarded along the way, except for one (1) poor little rich boy with a bad attitude who nevertheless starts calling him hyung one day when he’s fourteen. So while it doesn’t make sense for his career to continue a relationship with a demoted officer who abandons ambition and voluntarily (???) gives up one bad job in a small town for a worse job in a smaller town, deep down Kwon Hyuk knows that he’s hanging on to Han Juwon (hyung’s rules, nonnegotiable, die mad about it Juwonnie).
3.) The first time Juwon laughs—like, fully and genuinely laughs—in front of Dongsik is when they’re at the Chief’s lake-house one evening in early spring. They’ve had a couple of drinks and Dongsik is trying to show a cringing Juwon his interpretation of a Stray Kids dance choreo out at the edge of the water when he accidentally trips over his own fishing line. He stumbles for a few steps then star-fishes into the muddiest part of the water half way through the chorus, but the water’s shallow so he surfaces fast like a playful dog, shaking his hair out cheerfully. He’s just opening his mouth to claim it’s all part of the dance routine when he hears a soft sound from behind him. Juwon has waded into the water with a hand extended to help him up, and he’s laughing, and Dongsik finds himself at a rare loss for words. Juwon’s face is lit up, eyes scrunched and shining, with one arm pressed over his mouth, like he’s used to muffling the sound. So naturally, when Dongsik accepts the outstretched hand and pulls himself up, his next move is to gently tug Juwon’s other arm away from his face so he can get the full view. He has a mental picture of each person he loves, here and gone alike, and for the rest of his life the picture of Juwon that exists in his mind’s eye is of this moment, Juwon standing in front of him calf-deep in muddy water and laughing breathlessly, enveloped in the golden hour haze of the sun setting behind him.
4.) Jihoon accidentally becomes the mayor of Manyang.
5.) Once Han Gihwan finally dies, his life insurance payout is sent to Juwon, who goes wandering in the reeds for a few hours. Dongsik sits in his car on a hill nearby, giving space but making sure Juwon doesn’t ever fully disappear from his sight, and answering Juwon’s phone to field calls on his behalf. Juwon eventually comes back to the car and tells Dongsik that he’s going to use the money as a foundation for a women’s shelter. Dongsik approves, and names the shelter Balsam Flower Home.

Okay so I’m back and only a really spectacular piece of media could bring me back to fandom life. I’m talking about Moving (무빙) (2023). Warning: spoilers ahead.
Wow, this show. So, so, so good. I know the whole teenagers with superpowers and protective parents vs evil shady government/bad guys thing has been done before in different ways, but this one still felt so refreshing in its approach. Why? I don’t know. Maybe I’m biased towards kdramas, but there’s something about this show that its western predecessors like Heroes and Stranger Things etc. don’t have, and I think it is its distinct cultural and political identity that makes it unique.
To be honest, I didn’t catch the show when it was initially released last year because life caught up to me, and I regret not being there during its height of popularity. I just binged it in two days during a holiday break because the Baeksang nominees came out recently, and got curious because of the list. I have no regrets losing sleep over it. It was genuinely exciting and heart-wrenching, and so beautifully made. Thank you, Disney+, for the big budget, and for letting Kang Full adapt his work.
Anyway, I don’t really want to make a whole essay about how good the show was so I’ll just list down my thoughts and ramblings.
Jo In Sung is gorgeous. I already knew that prior to this show but he makes such an excellent Doosik, a smooth and dangerous spy with superpowers, who can be tender and romantic at the same time.
Han Hyo Joo — love her. So pretty as a spy, and to see her transform into a mousy single mother who is simply trying her best? Amazing.
Doosik and Mihyun’s storyline is my favorite. Spies who fall in love, and in the nineties? Omg. Mulder and Scully, seriously. The retro styling and production design was well done, too. Not cartoonish or obviously fake like they do in some kdramas. You can see there was genuine effort made to make it look somewhat realistic and believable to have been set during that time period. Maybe the shoulder pads and women’s blazers could have been slightly bigger, but the hair and unflattering trousers on Mihyun and Doosik’s and Juwon’s oversized coats? The filters? Excellent.
Back to their storyline. The set up was so good. The way it developed was so natural. The cutlets! Those trees! Their life together! All the tender feelings! God. What a beautiful couple. I love them. I want them to be happy. It broke my heart that their lives were stolen away from them.
There is a reason why Ryu Seung Ryong was nominated and why he is a legend. That man is a force. He is a beast. Juwon is their Wolverine. But my favorite parts are when he is being an awkward suitor then husband to Jihee and loving dad to Huisoo.
Lee Jung Ha’s smile as Bongseok can light up the world. What a sweetheart. I’m excited to see what happens next for him in the sequel (there will be a sequel, right?).
Cannot wait for Huisoo to become even more badass than she already is. If she takes after both her parents, she’d be terrifying.
Ganghoon is definitely the kind of guy I would have had a crush on at that age. Handsome, mysterious, a good son. Kind of sucks to see him turn into the very thing all the parents wanted their kids to avoid, but seems like he has the potential to be the new Doosik.
Now that I’ve read the story behind Hyewon, okay, I’m really intrigued to see where this goes.
Kim Sung Kyun as Ganghoon appa! My Reply 1988 heart.
The North-South conflict really gives the show its distinct flavor. The espionage is cool and all, but the traces of commonality give the show a lot of heart and humanity. I like how a lot of South Korean media humanize the enemy. It’s a reminder that they were one people a long time ago.
How does this have only 40-something fics on AO3????? Please, people, this deserves everything.
I had a lot more thoughts on this as I was watching but these are what stuck. I really hope to see more of these characters, hopefully soon, but I’m also interested to explore the other stories in this same universe that Kang Full has created.

re-watching Beyond Evil (after finishing up the first viewing only 2 weeks ago, because this show is driving me insane) it really struck me how both Kwon Hyeok and Lee Dongsik act as maternal figures to Han Juwon in perpendicular directions.
Kwon Hyeok
KH starts off as the mother-as-spousal-figure and takes his father's side to present a united front: he scolds Juwon for antics that might disrupt or anger his father, acts as a buffer between them to keep the household peace, and generally attempts to manage Juwon in accordance with his father's interests.
Tumblr media
His final plot beats show him gaining the self-worth required to break away from this toxic cycle. You could tell me this part was written for a step-mom character, and they replaced it last minute, and I would believe you.
Lee Dongsik
LDS instead grows to assume the position of mother-as-caregiver, who takes Juwon's side over his father.
Tumblr media
In episode 15's scene of jwds eating fish soup together, the editing maps a clear through-line from Lee Dongsik's visit with his mother at the care facility, to him deciding he will pass on that same care and quality time to Han Juwon. He can tell immediately that Juwon hasn't been taking care of himself, coaxes him to try new foods, and wants to know what he likes. In a way, LDS is the relationship Juwon wanted to have with his own mother.
And what's really interesting is you see both of these opposing archetypes of motherhood embodied in Do Hae Won and Lee Dongsik's mother in the flashbacks from 20 years ago, and how both of their sons turned out, as a result.

like what would have changed if hjw went to his mom when they took her away? they would've been ripped apart anyway, or hkh probably would've gone "ugh actually take him away too" and then what?? i'm just. that's such a tragic, shitty situation hkh crafted and i have no idea what could've made it better for mother and son. juwon's guilt and trauma probably doesn't let him see it like this, but there's nothing he could've done and he's spent so long thinking that he had a hand (sorry) in that mess. this is a han kihwan hate blog

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
i'll try to keep it short lol
my top 10 favs in no particular order
- Mulan from Mulan (the ANIMATED film)
the way she grew into herself... her hardworking nature... her gentleness... idk man i just love her
- Kageyama Tobio from Haikyuu
- Nakahara Chuuya from BSD
my blueberry boy was an arrogant outcast who went thru the most beautiful character growth EVER
he was a mean, inconsiderate, controlling a*hole at the start of the series and ended up being mindful and understanding while still retaining his high spirits and determination. still a dumbass tho! love that about him too lol
- Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars
his loyalty is unmatched it's actually insane how he's so loyal??? like????? even in BSD Beast he's loyal to Dazai even though Dazai doesn't deserve it
it's just him and his silly little hat and enormous heart despite being the literal god of destruction and science experiment
also does help that he's fxkn beautiful and unapologetically himself and powerful as fck lol
- Jeerawit from Kleun Cheewit (Wave of Life)
he is so full of compassion and kindness despite all the loss he suffered... the way he came out on top despite his rocky starts and setbacks and rejections and literally always being second best... Obi Wan is just so GOOD and selfless i adore him as a person so, so much
also, he's a sexy sass gremlin lol love that in a person
she has an extremely sad and difficult life but she's so kindhearted... she has such low self-esteem despite being rich and famous... she is so loved yet unloved... but what matters is that she rises above her sadness and hardship and she's so so loved... Sathit better keeps on treating her right or he'll be catching these hands
- Kang Gil Young from The Guest
my girl is hot-tempered but so competent, so no-nonsense but still full of softness and kindness. she's the mother, the big sister, the boss lady, the glue that holds their trio together.
- Oh Jin Joo from The Devil Judge
- Laurent from Captive Prince trilogy
she is such a well-written character... she's aware of herself and her quality and she stand by her morality throughout the entire series
case in point: she fckd up (bcs she was manipulated and used), was told she fckd up and instead of denying it and wallowing in unfairness, she took matter into her own hands and went to confirm it, she then apologized and made amend by doing what's right.
also does help that one of the female leads is so badly written rip
- Han Juwon from Beyond Evil
catty bitch + poetic suffering
but for realzie my son suffered so much and his journey to claim what's his is just fckn beautiful (and sexc *cough*) and it helps a lot that he's so well loved by Auguste and Damen
- Lee Dongsik from Beyond Evil
CHARACTER GROWTH AND POETIC SUFFERING
his fckn character growth jesus christ
he's an insensitive know-it-all fool who ends up being humbled and soft-spoken and kindhearted and willing to give up everything to right the wrong that his father inflicted upon Dongsik
+
POETIC SUFFERING
das it, das the reason... he just suffers really beautifully
ok i kid there are a lot of reasons (like his kindness towards everyone and his love for Minjungie) but mainly the sadness of his life and the beautiful resolution of his story
bonus: Howl from Howl's Moving Castle (studio ghibli) & Celia from The Help... whimsical characters with a history™ and heart of gold
i either love tortured characters who suffer poetically and beautifully yet still have a great capacity for kindness and compassion or characters who went thru character growth and came out striving to be the best, most beautiful self they can be
also, i just realized that a lot of things i like about my favs are due to fanon characterizations... like these top 10s are the very few that i originally like from canon materials alone haha
thank you for asking! it was really fun~

Beyond Evil fanfiction rec list
I’m totally enraptured by a new fandom, Beyond Evil, and it’s a welcome reprieve from all the doomscrolling I’ve been doing lately. So I’m starting a new fic rec list! It’s mostly Han Joo Won/Lee Dong Sik. (Or is it Han Juwon/Lee Dongsik? I’ve seen both versions.)
all is well (in this blighted world) by fadefromwinter
Summary:
Right in the middle of the end of the world, Han Joo Won returned to Manyang with backpacks full of non-perishable food, medical supplies, and some choice military-grade weaponry.
All the bad dreams that you hide by katierosefun
Summary:
Dong Sik smiles crookedly, and Joo Won wonders if nap is the right word used to describe whatever it was that he was in the throes of in that corner of the shop. Not that Joo Won takes naps himself either, but he thinks that they shouldn’t look so sad. Or be done in the most random of places.
[or: five times dong sik sleeps in a place that isn’t a bed, and the one time he does.]
The Beekeeper by Magnolia822
Summary:
They can't fix each other, but they can learn how to move on together.
Behind Closed Doors by UnrememberedSkies
Summary:
Kwon Hyuk had only been working for Han Kihwan for six months, but he could already recognise the signs of an imminent explosion in both father and son. And Juwon was ready to detonate.
Kwon Hyuk and Han Juwon join Han Kihwan at a dinner party with people who could make or break Hyuk's career. But Juwon seems to be the biggest threat to his ambition, whether he intends it or not.
Boomerang by knups
Summary:
If Han Juwon doesn’t want to get teased, he shouldn’t look so cute annoyed.
Or, three times Dongsik teases Juwon only to make things more difficult for himself.
boy, don't you know you're a hurricane? by pale_and_tragic
Summary:
Han Joo Won can shake hands if he has to, if he’s very, very careful. It’s even possible, sometimes, to briefly hold a vision at bay. But he prefers not to risk it, unless it’s absolutely necessary. He prefers to simply not touch people at all.
(Or, Lee Dong Sik has a vision and saves Lee Yoo Yeon all those years ago . . . but somehow, reluctantly, Joo Won ends up his partner, anyway.)
Call Ended by furorem
Summary:
Dong-sik arranges his mother’s funeral. Joo-won insists on helping. Dong-sik copes the way he’s always coped with losing a family member - in his own obstinate way.
A Cherry-petal Eye by HaruIchigo
Summary:
Han Joo-won suspects that his partner is not only a monster. But a fox in disguise.
Cold Like a Driven Nail by SummerTeaPrince
Summary:
Han Juwon decides, when his car breaks down in the reed beds, that he should walk to Manyang. As a city boy he underestimates the weather.
company policy by 64907
Summary:
Office AU. Han Joowon returns to Korea at his father’s behest and finds himself more than curious with one of the company’s executives.
Consign me not to darkness by reqvicm
Summary:
“It might not be my place to say but...I think that, even when you lose the rest of your family, you shouldn't lose yourself too.”
That, Joo-won could very much argue against, “I didn't lose the rest of my family, though.”
Their eyes met, Hyuk cocking his head in mild confusion, yet anticipating something like 'Han Ki-hwan isn't my family'.
“You're still here, aren't you?” was what Joo-won said instead.
courage to make love known by TiffanyLamps
Summary:
Joo Won stares up at the night sky. His large eyes reflect the city lights, tears morphing them into a milky way. He seems sweet like this: docile without his guard keeping him in check. Jae Yi imagines this is the side only Dong Sik gets to see. Joo Won’s eyes spill drunken tears, beautiful like the Banpo Bridge. What a precious fool.“It should have been you, Jae Yi-ssi. You should have been the one I fell in love with but- but…”
[Or: a self-indulgent karaoke fic]
a cruel and futile miracle by princesskay
Summary:
Dong-sik goes to Seoul for sushi and ends up on Joo-won's doorstep.
Set during episode 8, after Joo-won's altercation with Jin-mook in the interview. Joo-won's gay crisis is fully realized
Daydreams and Nightmares by knups
Summary:
Juwon knows Dongsik is lying. He’s a figment of Juwon's imagination, feeding him just what he wants to hear the most. The moment Juwon wakes up, dream Dongsik will evaporate into thin air.
Endearment and Fears of the Unseen by MicroFrog
Summary:
Rationality meant accepting that his suspiciously cheap apartment was so for a reason, one that would shake the sceptics, and may have shaken him as well, if it wasn't for witnessing it himself: Dongsik was getting haunted.
Luckily enough, it seems his ghost meant no malice, rather only cared to enforce Very Strict rules to abide to in the daily. He could deal with the incovenience of daily vacuuming, of folding laundry "properly", of protests over his pick of a background tune when cleaning... At most, the nagging was pretty endearing. But he soon finds a burden way greater than chores in the fear of losing someone he never ever knew alive.
Everything In Its Right Place by fadefromwinter
Summary:
Five moments that did not happen between Lee Dong Sik and Han Joo Won, and one that still might. A Five Things AU. (AKA five AUs that almost got written.)
NEW Gift horse dentistry by RC_McLachlan
Summary:
Dong-sik is incredible in bed. Ju-won is furious about it.
He barely manages to stop himself from texting back and demanding to know who else's life and guts Dong-sik has rearranged like sitting room furniture. Instead, he sends a photo of the Niçoise salad he made for lunch as proof that he is capable of fulfilling his body's basic needs.
Because he's a gremlin, Dong-sik sends him back a photo of a whole red onion on a plate. Would you still want to kiss me if I eat this like an apple?
Absolutely not, Ju-won flat out lies.
NEW Heart and soul by bluetrees (WIP)
Summary:
Lee Dong Sik has spent nineteen years prison for a crime he did not commit. Now that he is finally free, he is out to find out the truth, as well as who did this to him, and make sure they regret the day they were born.
Hook, Line and Sinker by fadefromwinter
Summary:
Han Joo Won is missing.
NEW I can’t bear to be without you by princesskay (you have to log in to read it)
Summary:
Dong-sik gifts Joo-won a teddy bear for Valentine's Day
I don’t know much about gentleness, but i will protect you from now on by farfromthemaddingcrowd
Summary:
“Are you actually insane?”
At the register, Dongsik glances up from counting the bills and almost drops them all over the floor. Well, well, well. Of all the grocery stores, in all the cities, in all the world, he walks into mine. Dongsik greets Han Juwon, like he does with all customers, with a friendly smile. “I thought we established that I am.”
“Lee Dongsik-ssi, you madman. Why did you do this?” Straightforward as ever.
“I’m not going to get any work done with you here, am I?” Dongsik sighs, and leans both of his elbows against the counter. Instead of prevaricating, this time, he supplies the serious, honest answer: “The people of Manyang deserve to have their ghosts chased away. They have happy memories of this store, and I want to overwrite the sins that have occurred here.”
“And what about you?” Han Juwon takes a step closer. “Will anyone chase your ghosts away?”
In which the killing of inner demons is a life-long process, self-destruction is a tough habit for Dongsik to break, and a certain coiffed inspector prince returns to Manyang to hold another man’s hand and guide him through all the leftover grief.
if every house is haunted by pale_and_tragic
Summary:
Joo Won, freshly showered and comfortably melting into his couch, is on his third of glass of wine when the text message comes.
Yah. I’m moving. Help out, Lieutenant Han.
I love you (ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?) by katierosefun
Summary:
“I’m not making fun,” Dong Sik said. “I’m asking you to at least drink with someone next time, if you’re going to be at public.” Elevator—they were finally at the elevator. He pushed the button to take them up the floors.
Joo Won released a short laugh. “Are you…offering?”
[or: joo won makes a messy confession, dong sik short circuits, and perhaps settling for "this could be enough" isn't actually enough.]
Indoctrination by TiffanyLamps
Summary:
“It’s okay, Han Joo Won," Dong Sik doesn’t take his eyes off the road, continuing his teasing. "There’s no need to be jealous," he flashes a devilish grin and in return, gains Joo Won’s beauteous but fixated glare, completely ablaze with exasperation. "You can share me-”
“-Jealous?”
Dong Sik is the walking definition of whiplash… and Joo Won refuses to wear a seatbelt.
[OR: Han Joo Won has to endure a normal day at work; one free of serial killers, finger-pointing, and traumatising crimes. Although, he’s not sure what he gets instead is much better.]
In Search Of by foolish_mortal (WIP)
Summary:
Family gathering coming up? Mad at your dad?
I am a 40 year old unemployed man who just got out of prison. If you’d like to have me as your stictly platonic date for a family get-together, but have me pretend to be in a very long or serious relationship with you, to torment your family, I’m game.
NEW Into the deep by Magnolia822

Joo Won can’t fall asleep. It happens sometimes. It’s not really a problem.
A Manyang Date by L_C_Weary
Summary:
"Too posh?" Hyuk let a smile take over his face. "So, it's a Manyang date, then."
(Or: Juwon tries to get ready for a Manyang event, and Hyuk is actually helpful, even if he disapproves.)
Memento Vivere by bluetrees
Summary:
As an arbiter of souls, it is Han Joo Won's job to decide the fate of every soul that arrives in his bar. He's been doing a fairly good job for a hundred years now, till a special guest arrives and all that Joo Won knows about the human condition and the afterlife is thrown into question.
Nobody’s Fault That You Didn’t Know Better by lewdhandholding
Summary:
There are some things in life that Juwon has not managed to master, or even attempt, as he stares down the possibility of being in a relationship for the first time. But that’s fine. He has raw determination and unfettered access to the internet on his side, he can handle this.
NEW The Odd Undersides of Stones by anisotropes
Summary:
It takes months for Joo Won to first mention Lee Dong Sik—although the therapist obviously knows more of his history than either of them acknowledges. After that, the therapist asks Joo Won, in the middle of unrelated anecdotes, “Does that remind you of Lee Dong Sik?” or “Is that how Lee Dong Sik made you feel?”
Pretty Boys Anonymous by sisilim
Summary:
A video call with an investigator, a judge, and a crime novelist, complaining about life. And some special someones.
Or: Pretty Boys and their Morally Ambiguous (maybe) Unhinged Middle Aged Men
(The Devil Judge/Beyond Evil/Strangers from Hell crossover)
Put Me To Work by isozyme
Summary:
The first time is an accident. Lee Dongsik hasn’t even finished going through his court proceedings. He hasn’t called, hasn’t texted. Juwon’s handling it by getting shitfaced in a tourist bar at 4pm on a Friday afternoon. Nobody from Manyang would be caught dead here.
Juwon doesn't contact anyone the year post-canon because he's busy drinking himself stupid and going home with the first person who looks willing to fuck him. You could call it a coping method. (Mind the warnings!)
read all the books beside your bed by katierosefun
Summary:
Han Joo Won stared at Dong Sik, then at the crowd of students.
He looked unimpressed, as though he wasn’t the most hated professor in the nation.
“Professor Lee,” he said calmly. “There’s no need to kick down my door.”
[or: the au where lee dong sik and han joo won are forcibly made co-professors.]
Resonant Frequency by RC_McLachlan
Summary:
Lee Dong-sik is an astonishingly competent detective. Correction: was.
Ju-won grapples with the reminder.
"What was your involvement when you were with the RIU?" Ju-won doesn't remember any of the detectives' names attached to the case notes, let alone if Dong-sik's was on the list, but then he hadn't been looking particularly hard.
"I was part of the second team that took a crack at the investigation. I think it was around 2010?"
"2009," Ju-won corrects.
One side of Dong-sik's mouth pulls up. "Which means you were, what, eight?"
Rome wasn't built in one day by AconitumPrimula
Summary
Dongsik rarely ever shows it, but he too is scared to lose.
Kind of five times and one-time trope but also not, just very angsty.
Simple Things by bluetrees
Summary
“How is it you take care of others, yet don’t take care of yourself?” It's simple, really. Taking care of other people's pain makes it easier to avoid your own-- something Lee Dong Sik is an expert in, until he's stuck in bed, feverish and unable to move. Lucky for him, Han Joo Won is as persistent as ever, even if his kindness proves to be a greater challenge than his animosity.
A Soft Epilogue by Shadows_Keeper
Summary:
It's been over a month since Han Juwon last talked to Lee Dongsik at the lunch honouring Chief Nam. He figured, since he hasn't heard from him, that lunch must have been a goodbye. He doesn't blame Dongsik for wanting to build a life without him after everything he put him through, but when he receives a text from him out of the blue telling him to take a vacation he remembers how much that man annoys him. It's clear he has been keeping tabs on him instead of just talking to him like a normal person. Juwon plans to meet up with Dongsik to show him how completely unnecessary and unwanted his advice is. The visit doesn't exactly go as planned, but it does go exactly the way he needs.
Or Han Juwon and Lee Dongsik get the romantic comedy ending they deserve.
Something of a Catastrophe by bluetrees
Summary:
Well, this isn't what Lee Dong Sik expected when he found a stray cat at his doorstep.
Three Dinners in Seoul by protos_metazu_ison
Summary:
Juwon sighed. “He was my partner when I was stationed in Manyang.”“Just a partner?” Inspector Kim turned to the rest of the Foreign Affairs team. “You should have seen him, bouncing up to that man like a puppy. I thought he’d been possessed.” (or Juwon and Dongsik grab dinner in Seoul)

To Unhaunt a Home by reqvicm
Summary:“Joowon-ah...” he called once more, somewhere between concerned and slightly annoyed, then grabbed him by the arm to stop Joowon. “Don't be like this now. I'll handle things, I promise. I mean, we're basically like family now, right?”Joowon turned back around, perplexed. “What?”Hyuk nodded innocently, “Yeah. The three of us. So just let me-”“You're out of your mind,” Joowon hissed, forcefully pulling himself out of the grip the older still had on his arm. “We'll never be family, so just cut the crap.”
OR 5 times Hyuk regards them as family and the 1 time Joowon finally has the heart to return the sentiment.
The Very Next Day by triedunture
Summary:
Han Juwon needs a place to hide out. Lee Dongsik is very accommodating. And a little bit in love.
A post-canon "let's fuck about it" fic with Nasty Tenderness/Tender Nastiness (tm)

The house had yellow walls and pale wood trim in all the rooms. The floors were linoleum, except the bathroom and the kitchen which had tile. Juwon cleaned the bathroom sink and the mirror every day with wipes, even though Dongsik didn’t leave much to clean. He only shaved every other day at most, and would rub raspily at his chin when his stubble got too long. Juwon would have hated the sound if it was anyone else. Instead he found the soft scratchy noise inoffensive, like the whir of wheels on an exercise bike.

Summary:
“Why are you doing this?” Joo-Won demanded.
“Doing what?” Dong-Sik asked, one corner of his mouth twitching into that damnable smirk.
Joo-Won searched for the words to describe what he felt like Dong-Sik was doing. ‘Prying into my personal affairs’ would have been good. ‘Being an obnoxious piece of shit’, also a strong contender. ‘Refusing to accept the fact that I don’t want you here, I don’t want you in my life, I don’t want anyone in my life, I don’t need anyone in my life, and all you’re doing is driving me to distraction at a time when I need to be focused’, he thought, was probably the most accurate.
Somehow what he wound up saying through gritted teeth was, “Staying.”
With the twirl of a finger by Namless
Summary
When he’s done, Juwon fishes a handkerchief from the back pocket of his jeans, wiping the sweat away from Dongsik’s shoulders. Then he gets down to the coolbox and grabs the bottles inside. Dongsik is still admiring their garden, the mountain not so far, all covered in green in this season.
“You like my mane though.” There’s a slight appreciative hiss to his voice when Juwon slides the beer bottle against his spine and then the side of his throat.
“Of course I do.” Juwon replies, index finger twirling the end of the ponytail absent-mindedly. “It still needs a trim. Your mane will be all the more glorious.” he teases.

Han Juwon and Lee Dongsik: In search of the lost. Part 2 (the final )
Tumblr media
(Spoilers, a lot)
Already at the first meeting, Dongsik and Juwon have reasons to look at each other with particular interest.
Juwon's interest is obvious - Dongsik is a suspect, for Dongsik he came to Manyang . What might not be so obvious why Juwon is so obsessed with suspicion? In part, there is logic in this. The fact that Donsik was already the prime suspect, then Lee Gumhwa's message and disappearance - all the threads seem to lead to Donsik. But it is also a manifestation of those very feelings, displaced from consciousness. The idea of a family killer who committed a crime and walked away unpunished is so thrilling for Juvon because it is essentially what happened in his own family. His father destroyed his mother and went unpunished, with a reputation for being a respectable person. And somewhere deep down, it burns Juwon and prompts him to cling to a similar case.
Tumblr media
Dongsik sees Juwon for the first time, but he also has reasons for a special attitude. He learns that Juwon is the son of Нan Gihwan. The same person who led his case and closed it, never reaching the truth. That did not stop Han Gihwan from making a brilliant career. Probably, Han Gihwan to some extent personified the law for Dongsik - which he once hoped for and in which he became disappointed.
Tumblr media
(Juwon has a photo of young Lee Dongsik on the wall. And Dongsik has a newspaper clipping on the wall with a photograph of Khan Gihwan.)
But mutual prejudice is not the only reason for hard feelings. What they see and understand in each other is perhaps even more annoying. Because both embody a dream for each other, which was once very important, but which each has already managed to devalue. And they embody it in such a crumpled, painfully disappointing form.
Tumblr media
For Dongsik, this is a dream about law, about justice, and maybe even more globally - about some kind of properly and harmoniously arranged world. A dream that he himself betrayed at some point, deciding that the law is powerless here. And then Juwon appears - like an angel sent from above. But the angel is somehow flawed, arrogant, with an unethical act on his conscience, and he address his stubbornness to the wrong direction.
(Thanks to amazing Reel for the idea of Juwon personifies the law for Dongsik)
For Juwon, it's the dream of a warm touch, a safe and joyful relationship. The dream of a free and vibrant life. A dream that he himself gave up, because he decided that he had no right to it, and the price could be too high. But as a child, Juvon probably dreamed more than once about someone like Donsick, about a caring, loving person - as opposed to his father, and who knows how to enjoy life - as opposed to his mother. And here is such a person in front of him - but he is a suspect in murder, he laughs with a devilish laugh, and in his eyes mortal fatigue has almost supplanted his natural love of life.
Seeing a repressed part of yourself in another is both exciting and disturbing. "I don't like psychos," says Juwon, whose mother ended her days in a mental institution and who suffers from panic attacks. A curious off-screen moment. In a scene from Juvon's flashback, his father says "now our life will be perfect." As if he has big plans for his son. This does not fit in a little with the fact that he soon sends Juvon to England, takes him out of his influence. We're going into the realm of guesswork. But it seems to me that this panic attack was far from the first, and, perhaps, the "ideal" life did not work out due to the difficult psychological state of the boy. For twenty years, Juvon has been able to seal this aching, feeling, vulnerable part of himself. But as soon as he met Dongsik, all this artificially built internal order begins to crumble.
Tumblr media
“You sent her to her death,” Dongsik says to Juwon, despite the fact that he himself feels responsible for the death of his partner. Dongsik, who forgave Nam Sanba the severe beatings, who never pressed on Jung Jae, even though he understood that he had his own secret. Dongsik, so selfless with others, suddenly so mercilessly provoking with Han Juwon. Because he's a stranger? Or because there is something painfully close in this loneliness and in this temptation to justify dubious means with a high end, to put oneself above the law? I think both. The mixture of alien and familiar in another person inevitably evokes complex emotions.
Interestingly, one of the first dialogues between the protagonists concerns the topic of self-interest in relationships. Juwon says he has no friends because everyone wants something from him. And Dongsik, not without irony, remarks: "I wonder if they all need the same thing from you?"
What is the difference between using and unselfish attachment? Almost any relationship begins with the fact that we are attracted by something valuable to ourselves in another. The question is whether we will see an integral personality behind this particular need.
1. Using
Tumblr media
Dongsik and Juwon's relationship also begins with using - mutual. Dongsik uses Juwon deliberately as a weapon in his fight. Uses Juwon's obsession (and connections) to spin the case, gain attention, and ultimately lure the monster out of his hole. And Juwon goes even further than Dongsik expected, causing him at times to express an expression of delighted surprise.
Juvon unknowingly uses Dongsik as a figure to act out his suppressed feelings. Dark cloudy anxiety in front of his father. Pain for the mother and anger at her. And Dongsik can withstand these feelings. He responds with a sting on a sting, a bite on a bite, but does not repulse, does not ignore, does not break the connection.
2. Support
So both pass the first test of strength, becoming for each other not just a tool, but a support. This feeling of support is manifested even in gestures. Juvon, in a situation of confusion, literally clings to Dongsik, as if with aggression and hope at the same time.
Tumblr media
And Dongsik at the sight of Juwon immediately takes on a more relaxed look, exhales, leans against the wall, like a man who has finally returned home and can drop his armor.
Tumblr media
When you have found support, you can push off and move on. And both heroes get off the dead point and begin the path to healing.
3. Healing
Typically, trauma therapy is about reliving a traumatic experience with a different outcome. And this is what the main characters give each other - they lead to a frightening line, but do not let each other fall over the edge.
Juwon and Dongsik's traumatic scripts fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Therefore, living each their own path, they give each other a closure.
Juwon refused to have connections with people, tried to forget everything connected with his mother. Dongsik - entangled in relationships, like a tree with ivy, lives in a house that has actually turned into a crypt. In a city where many know something about his sister's case, but everyone is silent. Juvon's mom's fingers that eluded him forever. And the fingers of Dongsik's sister, which remained with him, as if holding him in this state of half-life. One cannot take another's hand. The other cannot push away the hands that gripped him. Two extremes of one disaster.
Juwon, with his harsh, sometimes brutal, directness helps Donsik find Yuyeon's body and finally let go of this ghostly bond. Nudges into agonizing conversation with Jeonjae. And ultimately, it gives Dongsik the opportunity to arrest his sister's killer. But closure for Dongsik is not only the closure of his sister's case. This is a partner and already dear person to Dongsik, whom he was able to "let go", and he returned, did not deceive the trust and did not die. This is an arrogant "angel" who descended from his pedestal to share his pain and take his burden. This is the representative of the law who can really be trusted. And this trust returns Dongsik himself to the framework of the law, returns to him that human appearance that he was ready to lose.
Tumblr media
The closure for Juwon is the complete and final realization of what happened to his mother. An opportunity to mourn her death and condemn his father. The opportunity to feel strong, able to save another person from injustice and madness. The opportunity to be weak, vulnerable - and receive the warmth and care of an older.
Tumblr media
Affection and compassion for Dongsik was reason enough for Juwon to face his fears. To descend into the "dirty" real world and into its own inner hell. As the son of a suicide, similar to his mother, he could also avoid emotions for this reason - fearing that a hereditary trait might one day lead him to a dead end. And already from the first episode, we see in him this suicidal tendency to go ahead towards danger. This is something that Dongsik immediately notices - that Juwon is not trying to dodge the gusts of wind. Throwing himself from a height into the " hell" is the ending that Juwon was waiting for, to which he unconsciously walked. But unlike his mom's situation, there was a man for Juvon who was ready to catch him, to insure him in the fall.
4. Closeness
Tumblr media
And with all these processes, a deeper connection is formed between the heroes, going beyond specific needs. Juvon's family discredited the very idea of a relationship for him as much as possible. Manyang shows him the other side of human connections. Even the photo that Juwon showed Lee Geumhwa looks like a dream - warm, joyful, with some kind of magical light, a little blurry - like an image from a dream.
Tumblr media
Perhaps Juwon unknowingly was so eager to go to Manyang for this image as well. Here he learns how to connect with people, apologize, ask for help and accept support. But if Juwon retains some distance with the other Manyangs, with Dongsik the distance disappears almost immediately. Juvon does not seem to feel the boundaries between them, but Dongsik's personal boundaries feel like his own. And he grows up as a formidable obstacle in front of everyone who tries to break them.
Tumblr media
This feeling of a common space for two, an invisible unbreakable thread is also manifested in the way they unconsciously copy each other's gestures. How they leave each other “messages on camera”, knowing exactly what the other will find, see and understand. Gradually, they develop their own language of communication, intended only for two. Sometimes it is very similar to flirting.
Tumblr media
Sometimes it looks like a fight. But every such small dialogue is like a password, a connection check. Even in the final scene, Dongsik's toilet joke and Juwon's grumpy response are not only a way to hide the embarrassment, but the same password. Another reminder that they are different, but they are together. Although often they don't even need words - they can arrange an entire conversation with their eyes alone. It is enough to see how they look at each other to appreciate the importance of this relationship for both.
This is how Juwon looks at Dongsik:

From people who need each other for specific purposes, they become people who need each other just like that, simply because together they feel truly alive. This gradual awakening to life under the interested, compassionate, admiring gaze of another person is masterfully embodied by the actors. And this is possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a drama. Dongsik and Juwon use each other to fill in the missing pieces, but they don't become the same. They become themselves. Isn't this a true manifestation of love - when someone else needs you exactly as you are in your natural essence. Dissimilar and dear at the same time.
