please ignore the mini meltdown i had over the critics choice awards. EEAO for BP and fraser for actor are exactly the kind of choices the critics choice would make in any normal year. but i do still stand by my notes on the SAG awards being a friendly show for both as well, and with wins, they could be a contender and a long distance spoiler respectively. with enough momentum, EEAO could vie for the underdog BP spot against banshees, and the underdog has won since moonlight’s 2017 win (excluding the covid year in 2021 in which a lot of the films were underdogs in general and maybe GDT’s the shape of water [2018] which was kind of schrodinger’s underdog).

#HOWEVERRRR #with the exception of the 2020 season’s juggernaut parasite #the underdog is typically the less popular film #it has less hype and makes less money #which is why its an underdog #what made parasite an underdog was the fact that it is an international film #more than anything #and it’s not a classical prestige drama/epic like 1917 was #which are usually the films that win best picture #EEAO made a lot of money and has a lot of hype and is backed by the darling studio of critics and film twitter (a24) #its only underdog quality is that its nonconventional and that it boasts a majority asian cast #so we’ll just have to see how it shapes out #also worth noting….besides 2021’s nomadland which swept pretty widely #the underdog BP winner has failed to win a best acting award #and also excluding the shape of water for reasons i just said #all the underdogs with the exception of green book i think have won best director or best screenplay #however shape of water did fail to win a best acting award #considering michelle yeoh and colin farrell are both early contenders for best acting awards….this might merely be incidental #banshees is ineligible for the WGA so that might hurt martin mcdonagh’s screenplay chances #but we shall see!

ok so re: logan and racism (and marcia) because i’ve been having Thoughts TM rotating in my mind for a day or two but like. logan, obviously, is a very racist individual, but i think mostly in the sense that he perpetuates and weaponizes racism rather than actively, like, unironically having said bigoted beliefs (for the most part of course lmao)

in the sense that, like, he does not believe that, say, white people are inherently superior, and he knows and acknowledges that they have a leg up in the world because he’s many things but he’s not stupid. but to him, that’s not a bad thing. it’s not a good thing either. it’s just .. a Thing. it’s the way the world works. (same with misogyny and other forms of oppression. “i didn’t make the world,” he says to shiv after saying her being a woman was a minus.) 

he’s got a, like, might makes right natural selection type proto-fascistic sense of morality that prioritizes power and strength above all else.  rather than condemning systemic bigotry that he is very very very aware is real and exists, it’s like -- it is what it is. the world isn’t fair, tough luck. he’s aware that spreading racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, etc is profitable for him and therefore he will do it and he won’t feel bad because he didn’t create the world and it’s not his fault that that’s the way things are. racism and bigotry are tools and he won’t hesitate to use them if it’ll serve his interests. it’s all part of the game.

like he’s one of those people who would look at african and asian countries who have had their resources fucked to hell by colonialism and capitalism and imperialism and white supremacy, like iraq, egypt, iran, ethiopia, etc, and he wouldn’t try to downplay how much they contributed to humanity or whitewash them the way your run-of-the-mill old racist man would, but he’d also have no sympathy for their current suffering. he’d think well it’s their fault they let themselves get lazy and soft. that’s what you get. he wouldn’t downplay the crimes europeans have committed against native americans but he’d say that “they were conquered” and that’s the way the world works. oops sorry tough luck you lost. 

which brings me to: he respects people of color who, to him, “rise above” racism -- like marcia. because to him, human rights aren’t inalienable. you have to claw your way through the world to be respected and perceived as a human being but if you DO manage to do that -- then you’re one of the good ones. you deserve respect. (romanticizing suffering like a good old catholic lol) i think he feels like him and marcia are similar in the sense that they both rose above hardship -- in the sense that they’re both immigrants (obviously with VERY different experiences) who made something of themselves.

so he respects marcia in a way he doesn’t respect anyone else in the show, in a way. he doesn’t respect his kids or the pierces because they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths and he doesn’t respect poor people either because he grew up poor too and he still made something of himself so fuck that everything’s an excuse. he’s like the poster-child of someone who has personally experienced injustice (being abused as a child, living in poverty, etc) and rather than not wanting anyone else to experience these things, you’d rather everyone else did because that’s only fair. like why do YOU get to have a safe space when I didn’t? no fuck that

so like i think if one of the kids were to say something bigoted or micro-aggressive to marcia in his presence he’d be quick to be like, okay, well what do YOU do successfully. quickly. however. he wouldn’t of course actively make the environment they live in safe for her, and he WILL actively promote racism against her people because that’s what works for him, just like he didn’t take measures to keep his kids safe from the people he associates himself with.

i've been emailing avery (guy from this post) almost every day for about a month now, and he's been a dream to work with bc i am a very anxious person about dates and instructions + i tend to over-explain things bc i'd rather risk being Very Clear and having someone be slightly annoyed w me but have done the task right, vs under-explaining and having to fix their mistakes, and wrt dates and times, i always get nervous and think "fuck wait, was it tuesday? maybe she said thursday and i got it mixed up. was it 1pm or 11am? both have 1, what if i read it wrong??" compulsively. but he not only doesn't seem to mind at all, he seems to actually really enjoy that i write out stuff step by step with multiple examples bc i'm terrified of being misunderstood.

which got me thinking "damn, maybe it's me that sucks at emails? maybe i'm a shitty coworker?" but i just went back thru a series of email chains that happened this week and i can GUARANTEE you i'm actually So Good At Emails and it's everyone else who is wrong. for example, real actual copy/pasted snippets from email conversations with my store manager:

me: hey i just need to know what time the meeting is this week, thank u boss: Thursday me: okay 👍 what time? [does not answer for 24hrs. i close this email thread and start another]

me: hey what time is the meeting on thursday? boss: it's Thursday afternoon. me: can you narrow it down? [does not answer yet again. new email]

me: i need to know what hour the meeting on thursday afternoon is so i can prep boss: it will have to be after 10. (that does not narrow it down because that's still a five fucking hour window) me: got anything more specific please? i need 10 minutes to get [coworker who covers my job when i'm not there to do it] situated + another 30 to get notes and teams ready [STILL NO FUCKING ANSWER]

me, who has 451 other fucking things to do and so i decide to just pick the goddamn time myself: hey all [everyone else who'll be in the meeting] does 1230 work for u? boss, responding to me and only me: it can't be in the afternoon I have [insert other tasks to do]

this is insanity. it drives me absolutely batshit that so many of the people i have to talk to on a weekly basis do that thing where i will send EXACT INSTRUCTIONS in an email and they'll... idk. read it too fast? skip parts? and then ask me "oh how does X work?" when it's right there in the goddamn email oh my gooooooood. it has to be because i talk too much in text. it has to be. everyone's like "oh this person doesn't talk out loud much, they must be normal" and then you give me a keyboard and i'm like "what if instead of 8 words i used 47 million"

Like it’s crazy because I was literally just yesterday talking about how Vail very obviously sees Aaron and his case as a way to work through his own issues with the justice system more than a real case where a real persons life is on the line, but when Aaron recognizes this and uses it and in general the system to his advantage to get out of punishment (which he didn’t deserve in the first place) Vail breaks down at like! The thought of being outsmarted by someone he sees as less capable than him lol. It’s great.
