Lose the Guilt Before You Lose the Weight
I was doing great. I was eating healthy, I was on Tamilee Webb’s 21 Day Belly Weight Loss program, and then I went and ate a stack of pancakes. I felt awful. I told myself getting in shape wasn’t worth the effort and for the next few days I wallowed in guilt, angry with myself for letting it all go. I felt as if I had failed myself, and worse, I felt immobilized to try again.
 Guilt is generally defined as an emotion that we experience when we act against our own values or convictions. There are basically two types of guilt: guilt as stimulant and guilt as torment. Healthy guilt stimulates us to change and growth while unhealthy guilt torments us and hinders our growth.
 The kind of guilt that stopped me in my tracks was the unhealthy kind. Psychology calls it neurotic guilt. It came because I violated my personal eating rule of not eating too much sugar or carbs. The pressure I put on myself had been too great, making the risk of failure too high. Since research tells us that 65 percent of us are overweight, and many of us feel guilty about being overweight, that’s a whole lot of guilt and anxiety floating around.
So how did I get back on track and lose the guilt? 
Sometimes the greatest expression of power is the quiet thought inside of us that says, “I’ll try again.” There are always going to be set backs and challenges along the way. It’s how we deal with them that determines our eventual success in managing our weight and fitness. On day four of feeling guilty I decided to:
1) Concentrate on what I was grateful for.
Instead of demanding perfection, I gave myself a list of intentions. “I intend to eat a salad for lunch today.”  “I intend to meditate for ten minutes.” “I intend to drink four glasses of water.” “I intend to work out for 30 minutes.“ Nothing was a “I have to,” just intentions. 
2) Give up on doing things perfectly.
I accepted that if I met most of my intentions, that was a great start.
3) Realize this is a process.
It’s going to take time to reverse unhealthy habits. By looking for a trend instead of instant results, I am setting myself up to succeed instead of fail.
I still can’t button my jeans, and yes, I am still wearing my stretchy pants. But with those three quick steps, I lost the guilt, which is the first step  I feel lighter already.
