Because the eldest child is now on spring break, I decided this would be an ideal time to take some vacation time.

To start things off, I informed our realtor that we will be putting an offer on a house. We'll be putting the official offer down in a couple of days. I want to know how many people are serious about that house. I don't want to put too much down, but at the same time, we don't want to under bid either. We walked away from a house last week, because we figured we were going to be out bid. That house ended up selling for $8K less than we were willing to pay. So we're going to put a lot more time/thought/strategy into this one.

Aside from possibly buying a house, we're hoping to see the new Ghostbusters movie sometime this week. I'd also like to take my daughter to the biggest art store in the city. I have never taken her there before, but she has taken a liking to painting with acrylics, so we're hoping to nurture that creative outlet. If the weather gets above the freezing point, I'd like to take the kids to the zoo. Last time we went it was in the middle of a heatwave, and a lot of the animals were hiding in the shade. At least this way we might get to see more of the animals that thrive in cold weather (ie. Polar Bears.)

I'm hoping to put aside some time to get some comic work done this week. It's been ages since I last sent out a newsletter at: www.morningcoffeecomics.com

I was going to visit a comic convention this weekend, but decided against it at the last minute. My wife pointed out that these cons are like a giant Petri dish of viruses and bacteria. I just got over a cold AND strep throat. The last thing I want is to spend my entire week off out with COVID.

My main reason for wanting to visit conventions, is that I want to start collecting something again. I like reading and making comics, but I have lost interest in collecting comics. Instead, I buy TPBs and omnibus editions. Things that I can actually store on a bookshelf. When we were unpacking, I found some of my old G.I. Joe action figures. I got to thinking that I might want to see if I can start collecting those. It turns out, those old 3.3/4" figures are expensive or in very poor condition. Instead, I spent that money on some of the new 'Classified' figures. I have no interest in collecting them all, but I might just try to buy newer versions of the figures I had as a kid, or the characters that I enjoy the most from the show I've been watching with my kids. So far, I have picked up Bazooka, Shipwreck and Lady Jaye. Someday I might try to go to conventions with my kids to find more of the classic figures, but for now, these ones are fun reminder of the time I spend watching the show with my kids.

We finally watched that new TMNT movie "Mutant Mayhem." It was a lot of fun, and my daughter is really into Ninja Turtles now. Six months ago, she absolutely hated the idea, now she can't wait for the sequel. It does my heart proud to know that she is as obsessed with TMNT now, as I was when I was eight years old.

I've been watching a lot of art vlogs on YouTube. I'm trying to find some inspiration to paint something this week. Instead, I find myself being bombarded by videos about 'selling stickers online!' It amazes me that all these people are (allegedly) making 4-5x my annual salary just by selling stickers online. I'm tempted to open my own art store just to see if it is a realistic venture, or if it's a bunch of fabricated BS to help them make a living off of YouTube's Partner Program.

I really should do some YouTube videos. All my equipment is in the corner of my apartment collecting dust as we've been looking for a house. I feel like I should draw a follow up comic to that one I did about moving the last time.

It really is that time of year I should be going through my YouTube subscriptions and unsubscribing to all the channels that have gone bankrupt, started posting shit/only shorts or haven't posted in 5 years. Ahh, these are all his other games. I love 'Ghostbusters MMO'. That one could actually be real, I kinda don't want to look it up to ruin the illusion.

Hash, eh? Seems needlessly complicated for an inventory, and therefore completely appropriate for this comic so far.

TG: did you at least allocate your strife specibus

No clue about this one. ‘Specibus’ looks like a merged word like sylladex. specification omnibus? specific rhombus? Godhead seems to be saying it's for combat, and John’s allocating his hammer to it, so maybe he’s choosing a fighting style.

Ahaha, some of these fighting styles are great. Pizza cutter? Pepper mill? You can even choose Statuekind. Do you transform into one in a fight like Tanooki Mario, or are you swinging one around as a sort of blunt instrument?

Honestly, I'd probably go with Hammerkind too. Can't go wrong with a good hammer.

And I'm sure you're glad you didn't pick one of the esoteric ones like Marblekind!

Just got my omnibus of the novelizations for Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II.

I love the fact that, out of three children, Ray's parents left him the house in their will solely because Venkman is so extraordinarily questionable in every sense of the word.

In a single visit, he pissed off Ray's entire family, so his folks were like "If you're going to hang around with that, you might end up needing a place to live".

And then, in perfect irony, it is Venkman who signs off the house as collateral for the firehouse.

If you’ve ever held a comic-book in your hand, the Awfully Cheerful Engine! will feel very familiar!

The core rulebook is just 30 pages in a bright, colorful comic-book sized format. We even gave it an issue number, like a comic-book! Yep, you can play a Ghost. You don’t take damage unless its from a holy source or some special sci-fi ecto-gadget. But you also can’t pick things up. So there’s that.

Each of the adventures adds some more Roles (or recommends some old ones)!

Spirits of Manhattan adds Ghost, Demonologist, Doctor, Engineer, Exorcist, Inventor, Priest, Professor, Scientist, and Student.

Raiders of the Cutty Sark adds Botanist, Double-Agent, Socialite, and Witch.

Strange Science adds Brain, Cheerleader, Outsider, Protector, Radio Presenter, and Tycoon.

Beam Me Up adds Captain, Chief Engineer, Comms, Hologram, Gunner, Counsellor, and Pilot.

ACE! is a pretty fast, light game. If you played 1986's Ghostbusters RPG, you'll see the influence immediately.

Stats! The AWFULLY CHEERFUL ENGINE! is a d6 dice pool system*. You have four Stats -- Smarts, Moves, Style, and Brawn. If you have a Moves score of 3, you roll three six-sided dice when you try to jump a motorcycle over a ravine. If you roll high enough, you succeed. It's pretty simple!

Focuses! For each Stat you also have a Focus. For Smarts it might be a science, or chess, or history. For Style it might be bluffing, singing, or fashion, and for Brawn it might be brawling or swimming. You can choose from plenty of focuses. Foci. Focuses. Whatever.  Anyway, if the thing you're trying to do relates to a Focus, you get to roll an extra two dice.

Trait! You choose a trait, like Angry or Cheerful or Rebellious or Despondent. This, combined with your Role, makes you a Gullible Vampire, a Brave Turtle, or a Squeamish Scientist.

Karma! Finally, you have a bunch of Karma points. These can be spent for extra dice or to absorb damage from attacks, and they're recovered by using your trait.

*Fun fact -- did you know that 1986's Ghostbusters RPG, by Sandy Petersen, Lynn Willis and Greg Stafford, was the first ever dice pool RPG? Also Sandy Petersen has written an awesome foreword for the AWFULLY CHEERFUL ENGINE!

What, I hear you ask, is a CALAMITY DIE?

The Calamity Die is how you find out that your friends really aren't your friends. You see, when you make a roll, one of those dice is a different color, and is called the Calamity Die. And if your roll fails, and also the Calamity Die rolls a 1, your so-called 'friends' decide what happens to you. It won't kill you or anything, but...

Well, we'll leave that thought with you.

New Comics I’m Excited About 3/21/2018

I haven’t posted anything in a long time. I started this morning with a mini rant (a fairly toothless gripe, really) on Twitter, and then moved on to positive comments on comics.

Now usually, I'm in no real rush to pick up my comics from my LCS (Crush Comics in Castro Valley, CA); I go on weekends, every 2-3 weeks. However, I'm thinking I'm gonna go in on Wednesday, March 28 because Action Comics #1000 is an event unto itself.  It's a rare comic book that hits this number in the US. Now, it would have been better if they hadn't interrupted it for the Phew52, but it's not as bad as trying to follow some series' numbering. Here's my rant for the day: I hate the practice of identifying comic book series by the year of the premiere issue, which is even more annoying in this age of flopping back & forth on "legacy numbering." This practice makes back issues (particularly multiple short runs and/or miniseries with the same titles) harder to identify and collect. Glad to see that recently some websites and vendors have been listing books by the more sensible date of publication.

Here's an example of best of both worlds numbering - Usagi Yojimbo #166 (due this Wednesday) is also labeled as part 1 of a 7 part series. (I'd prefer the "whole number" 166 to be on the cover somewhere, but this is good.) Bonus: Usagi Yojimbo remains a great series. (And don’t quibble with me that back in the early days UY got restarted at #1. Twice. It changed publishers and all that stuff. They’re doing it properly now.)

Oh for the days when bringing a title back into print meant picking up the numbering. All-Star Comics #58, anyone?

The first trade paperback coming this week that I’m excited about is Tales of the Man-Bat, and though it doesn't include any Bronze Age goodies, it does feature newer Michael Golden art, so I think Imma pick this up.

DC has put one of my favorite 1990s/2000s series back into print, in a 2-volume set collecting everything Planetary, including the Batman and JLA crossovers. Volume 2 drops Wednesday and is highly recommended. Planetary doesn’t just pay homage to classic pop culture characters and tropes, it tells a really good story on top of that.

Also coming on this Wednesday is a book I’m very excited about: Wonder Woman: Forgotten Legends, collecting Kurt Busiek and Trina Robbins' miniseries and a couple of other goodies. Trina’s art echoes HG Peters’ rather well, don’t you think?

Okay, here’s a biggie - literally! I love Marvel's classic Silver & Bronze Omnibus series for the inclusion of the original letters pages. Well, I love the comics, too. Coming this week (wonder why?) is Avengers Omnibus volume 3.

And finally, here are the monthly single issues I'm looking forward to this week: Brave & Bold (Batman & Wonder Woman) by Liam Sharp Ghostbusters: Answer the Call written by Kelly Thompson Ms Marvel (duh! I can’t live without Kamala Khan!) by G Willow Wilson

Diamond just released their top sellers for November, and nothing was amiss, as much ballyhooed launches for Uncanny X-men, Green Lantern and Venom led the way. Venom got a surprising movie bump with the first collection of Donny Cates’ run topping the graphic novel charts in units.

Marvel led DC comfortably – no one has really been talking about it after the disasters of 2017, but Marvel seems to have stabilized quite a bit, bringing back strong #1s of characters people like reading. Look for Ironheart #1 to do well for December sales, as well. Getting some juice from the Venom movie is a nice bonus. Heck, a Black Panther Little Golden Book was the #2 book for the month. Those movies are selling books.

DC had a good launch with The Green Lantern, but there’s only one Grant Morrison, and if the rumors I’m hearing are true, 2019 should be the year everyone starts worrying more about DC. But more about that later.

Still, it was a blah month overall, and 2018 will be a blah year. John Jackson Miller points out that it was a puny month, with 121 fewer titles shipping in November than in October. He also notes:

It was Marvel’s smallest new comics slate since October 2015. DC shipped 67 comics, down from 95 last November. Fully 22% fewer new comics out. The bright side is that even with so much less material out, Marvel was still up slightly year-over-year versus last November.    The graphic novel category was worse off — there, the dynamic also looks supply-side, as publishers appear to be increasingly trying to get retailers to stock for the holidays in October.   Six percent fewer comics have come out in 2018 so far; unit sales are down 6%. Pretty direct connection there. Since comics dollar sales are slightly up — and 2017’s unit sales were inflated by overships and 25¢ books — the comics that did come out did a little better relative, per issue, than last year.

Thogh the ^5 drop may be explained by fewer comics, graphic novels are down 6-7% for the year, and that’s a troubling trend. 2018 held its own but it still didn’t quite have the kind of break out hit that makes everyone stand up and cheer.

Crypto/legacy hybrid financial instruments—specifically, those that mix cryptocurrencies with legacy financial products—are the latest trend at the intersection of blockchain and Wall Street. Regulated versions of these hybrid products are quickly coming to market, including stablecoins and bitcoin-backed ETFs, futures, swaps and depositary receipts. There’s much excitement surrounding this trend—with good reason, in one case—but everyone should be warned that there are also unknown and potentially big risks to “crossing the streams” between the settlement systems of legacy and crypto.

Mismatches are inevitable. Accidents will happen. No one should be surprised when they do.

Even so, demand for these hybrids is likely to be significant.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, I’ll lay out the differences between the legacy and crypto settlement systems and explain why the category of “crypto wrapped around legacy” hybrids involves fewer operational risks than the category of “legacy wrapped around crypto” hybrids. In Part 2, I’ll explain what these settlement system differences mean for owners of hybrid products.

Definitions

“Crypto wrapped around legacy” hybrids include stablecoins and tokenized gold bars. In this category of hybrids, the owner buys a cryptoasset designed to track the legacy asset’s price by holding the actual legacy asset in a ring-fenced account. In other words, legacy assets (such as dollars, securities, commodities or real estate) collateralize the cryptoasset. These hybrids are issued, traded and settled on a blockchain, but the underlying assets (e.g., cash, gold) that back this category of hybrid are issued, traded and settled in the legacy financial system.

“Legacy wrapped around crypto” hybrids include bitcoin-settled ETFs, futures, swaps, depositary receipts and any other derivative backed by any cryptoasset. In this category of hybrids, the owner buys a traditional financial instrument designed to track the cryptoasset’s price by holding the actual cryptoasset in a ring-fenced account. In other words, cryptoassets collateralize the traditional financial instrument. These hybrids are issued, traded and settled in the legacy system, but the underlying cryptoassets (e.g., bitcoin, ether) that back this category of hybrid are issued, traded and settled on a blockchain.

An Important Distinction

Neither security tokens nor cash-settled bitcoin derivatives (e.g., ETFs or futures) are crypto/legacy hybrids as defined here. Why? Because they settle entirely within their own settlement system (crypto and legacy, respectively) and don’t cross streams with the other system.

I draw a critical distinction between security tokens and tokenized securities. A security token is native to a blockchain—it’s issued, traded and settled on a blockchain, and is not a hybrid. A tokenized security is a hybrid that fits into the “crypto wrapped around legacy” category—it’s a cryptoasset backed by a share of Apple stock, for example, for which the cryptoasset settles on a blockchain but the Apple share settles in the legacy settlement system.

Cash-settled crypto derivatives settle entirely in cash within the legacy system, and never touch the underlying cryptoasset. Consequently, they do not introduce the risks of crossing streams between settlement systems. They certainly involve price risk, but they do not entail the exogenous settlement risks that their “physical” settled brethren do.

How the Legacy and Crypto Settlement Systems Differ

Why do these distinctions matter? Because the crypto and legacy settlement systems differ at basic, fundamental levels. In my experience, few Wall Street professionals even understand the spaghetti labyrinth of the legacy settlement system—most finish their long careers without ever needing to interact extensively with it since the culture encourages deep specialization and it’s difficult to move out of narrow swim lanes. When problems arise there’s always someone else in the “back office” who will sort it out. It wasn’t until I was forced to dig deeply into the settlement system, while structuring pension transfers from corporations to insurance companies, that I had to learn it—because every transaction involved significant and unique settlement complexity both for the assets and liabilities. We had to choreograph and practice the procedures down to the minute, literally, because the costs of any little settlement failure would have been major. That experience made me realize that the cryptoasset settlement system (on a blockchain) is far superior to the legacy settlement system. Here’s why.

Cryptoassets are digital bearer instruments that are designed to settle peer-to-peer, on a gross basis, in near-real-time and in “physical” form (i.e., in the actual cryptoasset). When cryptoassets trade, the buyer and seller simultaneously exchange value for value (“gross” settlement).

By contrast, the legacy financial system uses a delayed-net-settlement system involving layers of intermediaries. The key words are delayed, net and intermediaries.

Delays are purposeful in the legacy system—usually measured in days—and they enable financial intermediaries to settle with each other on a net basis. Netting is a practice that favors the intermediaries at the expense of customers, since netting minimizes the liquidity and capital intermediaries need to hold. Netting means buyer and seller do not simultaneously exchange value for value in every trade—rather, their intermediaries don’t settle and simply accumulate unsettled debits and credits for a defined time, and then settle by exchanging only the difference at the appointed time. Netting is why the securities industry commingles “street name” securities in omnibus accounts rather than segregates them for each individual customer. For example, brokers only exchange the net of all their customers’ buy and sell orders for Apple shares each day. They don’t send every Apple share back and forth to each other. Instead they settle up on a net basis—usually once a day after markets close.

The combination of netting, delays and layers of intermediaries—the practice of allowing unsettled trades—mean (1) counterparty risk and (2) inaccurate ownership ledgers are simply facts of life in the legacy financial system. Counterparty risk is the risk your broker will default after taking your money but before delivering you the Apple shares, in the above example. Imprecise ownership records enable situations such as Dole Food to arise (where Wall Street’s accounting systems created 33% more valid claims to Dole Food shares than there were Dole Food shares) and proxy voting inaccuracies are inevitable (a prominent Delaware attorney declared that it’s not possible to verify the true winner of a proxy contest closer than 55-45%). The legacy settlement system, in my experience, is why the financial system is unstable and unfair to regular investors.

In the crypto system, by contrast, counterparty risk doesn’t inherently exist—because it’s a peer-to-peer system that simultaneously delivers the asset and the payment to buyer and seller, respectively. It’s inherently a delivery-versus-payment system. As a settlement system, it’s inherently stable and fair to all users.

These are huge differences—one system embraces unsettled trades and considers counterparty risk and imprecise ledgers to be normal, while the other doesn’t.

There are other major differences too, and they’re summarized here:

I’ll preview Part 2 by sharing the punch line. Here’s how I would generically rank settlement risk by category. Again, this is not investment advice and every instrument will have unique risks! But since crypto systems objectively have lower settlement risk than legacy systems, we can make the following generalization about settlement risk by category:

Lowest to Highest Settlement Risk:      

Lowest Settlement Risk:  (1) Cryptoassets (assets natively issued, traded & settled on a blockchain)

Next Lowest Risk:  (2) Crypto wrapped around legacy hybrids (e.g., stablecoins)

Next Lowest Risk:  (3) Legacy assets (e.g., the status quo—assets are issued, traded & settled in legacy systems)

Highest Risk:  (4) Legacy wrapped around crypto hybrids—most “accident prone” operationally because they “cross the streams.” Worst of both worlds.

In Part 2 I’ll explore what these major differences in settlement systems mean for buyers of crypto/legacy hybrids.

Illustrated by the always prolific Francesco Francavilla and limited to 1,500 copies worldwide, the interior madness will be presented by the original series team, written by My Chemical Romance frontman and DC's Young Animal editor-in-chief Gerard Way and illustrated by multiple-Eisner-award-winner Gabriel Ba. As with our Batman #50 variant, the first copy purchased in-store will be cover price, with each additional copy available for just $10. This is truly another dream come truth for me.
