based on your Tv series knowledge and experience, u reckon there are good changes for GJ series 3? the lack of marketing this season is so worrisome despite all the great reviews.

To be honest I genuinely don't know. I'm not holding my breath tho.

These are the number of viewers (in millions) for each episode (7-day viewing data, BBC):

4.28 – 2x01, "Faith is All"

3.38 – 2x02, "Two Jacks Don't Suit"

3.37 – 2x03, "Tripe All Over the Place, Presumably"

3.15 – 2x04, "I'm Not the Other Woman, She Is"

3.20 – 2x05, "A Lucky and Narrow Escape"

3.21 – 2x06, "I Can Be as a Meteor in Your Life"

3.19 – 2x07, "What's All That Got to Do with Jesus Though?"

3.20 – 2x08, "It's Not Illegal"

For comparison, season one had an average of 5.90 million viewers per episode, this season had an average of 3.37 million viewers per episode – that is quite a significant drop, but also an expected one for a series like GJ which is 1) quite niche 2) came back after three years & after a pandemic.

3/4 million viewers is, usually, not bad for a BBC drama that’s on its second season, at the same time it’s not that great either, especially during this period where BBC is making significant cuts for budget reasons [x, x].

Besides the 7-day viewing data we should wait for the 30-day viewing data and see how many more people will stream it (I don’t think the numbers will change much tho, just looking at the media buzz it doesn’t look like many people are interested this time around).

Lack of promotion is not an issue in my opinion, the show was on its second season and usually if a network has to decide where to put the money, they’ll put it on promotion for new shows, not recurring ones. And with BBC having to cut down the budget we can assume that they decided to save on promotion in some cases. I honetsly think interest died down in three years and that’s why we’re seeing a drop in numbers.

There’s also HBO to consider, but I doubt it’s doing great over there.

It all depends on how much money are they (HBO/BBC) spending to produce a show like Gentleman Jack and how much they think it’s worth it.

An observation about Gentleman Jack 2x02:

All eyes were on Anne and Ann this episode. Something about it was slightly jarring, or uncomfortable, but in a way that feels true to me, about my experience as a lesbian. In all of my relationships I’ve always felt like there’s something I need to watch out for: someone is going to see, someone is going to react badly, someone is going to judge. When you’re in a lesbian relationship you’re always aware of what others are thinking, or how they’ll treat you. This season is very much about how Anne and Ann navigate their relationship in a world that is ultimately against them, and a lot of that is in relation to the way their families and community treat them. The almost voyeuristic feeling of them being watched or scrutinised (Ann’s family talking about them, the children hiding in the room while they kissed) all brought home what I’ve felt many times as a lesbian, that my relationship is being jeered at, commented on, judged. It’s another layer to this show that feels extremely authentic, and this kind of authentic representation isn’t always 100% comfortable to watch, but I’m grateful for it regardless.

Black Sails rewatch: 2x02

gonna keep this one short folks

“I don’t want to be a pirate,” says one of the top 3 most famous fictional pirates of all time

It makes me sad to hear Max talk about her relationship with Anne like it’s just a business move and not love, at least from her side of things. But that’s going to change quickly.

I find it weird that Jack reduces Anne’s motivations for helping Max to “she secretly wants to fuck you,” given that Anne’s history of sexual abuse—which Jack knows about—would make her sympathetic towards Max. I personally write this off as a flaw in the writing rather than Jack being stupid and insensitive, though from an in-universe perspective that’s what we’re left with.

IMO Hennessey knows about James’ sexuality, hence why he gets concerned when James refers to Thomas by his first name and James says “I know what you’re thinking.” But having certain desires/impulses is different from acting on them, which is why Hennessey acts so disgusted in 2x05.

Dufresne 2.0 has a different energy than Dufresne 1.0. It’s gruffer, less earnest. The good thing about that is that it allows me to pretend 2.0 is a Zygon and the outspoken and occasionally violent but usually mild and moral accountant of s1 is not the guy who justly gets his head smashed in s3.

Mean navy dude in the tavern suggests that young James may convince people he’s “a gentleman most civilized.” Even when he’s still in civilization he’s excluded from civilization.

People sometimes get on Thomas’ case for saying “the New World is a gift,” and yeah, it’s a...naive thing to say, but I think some people are too hard on him. I think it really is more naive than anything. I’ll always wish I could see what Thomas might have achieved if it weren’t for Alfred. I think he’s a smart man with good intentions and once he got immersed in the problem of Nassau, with James’ help he would have been able to make a significant difference for the better.

To be honest I’ve never understood what Flint is getting at when he says, first, you have to hope a prize captain doesn’t realize that the thing he feared when he saw the black flag “is nowhere to be found,” and, second, that “men in these waters don’t fear x, y, and z.” Like Silver said, “What do they fear?” I’m trying to read between the lines here but I’m at a loss :( How do you guys interpret those lines?

gentleman jack 2x05 thoughts

I will never shut up about the genius of Sally Wainwright and the way she writes so unapologetically and always with the intention of highlighting the complexity that exists inside of people. I think season 2 of Gentleman Jack is going to polarise people. We are half way through now, and it’s a much harder watch than season 1 (even though s1 certainly had its painful moments too), mostly because this season is centred around the difficulties Anne and Ann face now that they’re married, and navigating the reaction of those around them to their cohabitation. In my opinion, the homophobia (subtle and not so subtle) this season has been the most well-written, well-acted representation of what it’s like to face homophobia as a lesbian that I have ever seen on screen. There are many examples I could use, and I mentioned the homophobia in 2x02 in this post, but nothing emphasised this for me like the last scene in 2x05 when Anne and Ann find out about the homophobic marriage announcement in the newspaper. I mention that a little more here. These moments are gutting, they always hit very close to home, but they are essential in the telling of a true story about lesbians who defied their family’s and society’s expectations and lived as a married couple in the 19th century.

2x05 also tackled head-on the taboo topic of Anne Lister’s politics. I think it was the most explicit portrayal that we have seen so far of her more horrifying side. The show demonstrates Anne’s brave side, her soft side, the things we empathise with, but also the side that make us (at least, as liberal or leftist viewers) extremely uncomfortable and angry, too. It is vital to recognise that she did treat a lot of people badly, particularly Marian in this episode, and her view and treatment of the working class was inexcusable. All of this being said, it also doesn’t take away the importance of her story being told. It is just an uncomfortable truth that adds to the complexity of such a compelling story.

What will always shock me the most about the way this show is written, the way it’s airing on BBC 1 at 9pm, is not only that it is a lesbian story, but it’s a lesbian story that isn’t completely palatable. It has the same grittiness, the same nuance, as any other Sally Wainwright drama that shows both the positives and negatives that can co-exist in both relationships and us as people. In this case, it is telling the story of someone who could be incredibly revolutionary and yet reactionary at the same time. And I think season 2 is doing an absolutely incredible job at that.
