In this situation he would need something different, something right away. 

Steve can see Bucky’s head swimming, can see the way the interaction with her in this bookstore has sent Bucky reeling. In my head it would be necessary for Steve to get pushy, for him to address it right in the moment instead of waiting. But that would make Bucky livid. He hasn’t processed his own feelings and his brain is being mean to him and he just wants to ignore it and press it down, but we know Steve won’t let that happen. 

“Bucky, baby c’mere— no, don’t do that. Come here...” 

Bucky would literally try to walk away from the issue, from Steve, would shoulder off Steve’s attempts at grabbing for him until Steve has no choice but to reach and grab and press Bucky into a bookshelf, standing toe-to-toe with him, fighting off Bucky’s hands.

Steve’s words have Bucky whimpering some more, arms sliding around Steve’s waist, under his jacket. He kisses at the closest skin of Steve’s he can reach.

“I don’t want you thinkin’ for a second that I love you any less or that you aren’t worthy of the love I wanna give you because we ran into her and you saw her. You are who I love. You are my focus, my present, my everything. I wouldn’t change a thing about you, Buck...”

And Steve’s hands move as he speaks those last sentences, makes his way down Bucky’s body, his torso, squeezing as he goes. Bucky doesn’t have a choice but to look up at Steve, to do so with watery eyes as Steve’s hands slip back up to cup Bucky’s face. 

“You hear me?” is all he asks and Bucky’s chin fights a tremble as he nods his head, lets out an affirmative noise before Steve kisses him sweetly on the lips. 

“Tell me you love me,” Daddy commands and Bucky leans into the command with certainty, grateful for it. 

“I love you.” 

Another two kisses.

“Tell me you know your Daddy loves you.” 

Bucky swallows thickly, doesn’t want to make another sad noise even if one does manage to squeak out.
