Now that I can finally draw Ren and Kyoko in a way that's satisfactory to me I can finally draw some art of this brain worm that's been living in my grey matter for like three years I call it the "never left kyoto au" aka if Sho had never decided to run away to Tokyo and caved to his parent's desire for him to marry Kyoko and take over the inn. Ten years into an unhappy marriage, a high budget film production requests to use their inn for a multiple month location shoot. Sho aggressively refuses at first because he hates anyone in show biz and ESPECIALLY Tsuruga Ren because he's bitter that Ren has the life he wanted for himself, but after Kyoko wears him down for a while about how good it would be for the inn, she finally convinces him on the condition that he will have nothing to do with the production and he doesn't have to talk to, look at, or even breathe the same air as Tsuruga Ren... Anyway turns out that's a good way to lose your mistreated wife to a burgeoning passion for acting and a man who's willing to love and cherish her.

You Should Be Reading Skip Beat!!
youtube
I always find my way back to this video by Colleen's Manga Recs on YouTube. I think the video was very well put together and I wish I could see more content about Skip Beat in this fun and informative format. Ever since I first saw this, I can't help calling Ren my "sweet cheese", that's my new nickname for him!

Oh man... Zeus always does this to my heart. Don't think he realizes, lol. This entire scene was well written and I was with MC and Zeus in that room, feeling the music. my goodness I'm once again reminded of the skipbeat manga. I can associate Zeus with Sho Fuwa... not personality wise though. And I see a different kind of rivalry between Mik and Zeus than it was between Ren and Sho. So yeah... Plust is my new favorite title.💕 it's perfectly balanced and light-hearted. Here's hoping the writers won't drag the story too much (like the those of skipbeat did)

So I finally caught-up to Skip Beat. I stopped trying to follow it regularly because the time between chapters was so irregular and the chapters themselves felt so unsubstantial that I just couldn't muster the dedication.
Last week, however, I suddenly got the urge to see how far Skip Beat was along and tried to look into it. But I totally could not remember the last chapter I read and went back quiet a bit before resuming read. It worked out because while I had read the newer storylines, they didn't properly register in my brain. So rereading them helped.
All that said, at one point, the story did become a total slog as Ren and Kyoko had increasingly stupid misunderstandings. I mean, I get that misunderstandings and "will they, won't they" are bread and butter of romance stories but I always hated when they dragged the misunderstanding out for no good reason.
Also, Skip Beat can get extremely repetitive and tedious without meaning to and as a result, between chapter 260 to 280, it became a real slog to get through. But finally, Ren just comes out and tells Kyoko that he likes her. They agree to take it slow, not only because Kyoko is still a minor (although as established in an earlier chapter, she is above the age of consent at 16) with next to no romantic experience but also because both and Ren have professional goals they want to achieve before they can work on their personal life.
Still, Ren and Kyoko can just meet-up and discuss things. Like Ren letting a Lesbian actress use him as a "beard" or Kyoko being able to explain properly that while she no longer has any romantic feelings towards him, Fuwa Sho is still her childhood friend and there is a mutual care there, despite everything else.
It all very refreshing and means the focus can be on the showbiz stuff now that they have started a new film that looks like a Sci-fi blockbuster that's being jointly produced by the USA and Japan. Kyoko is not yet a cast member but she's part of the support crew. Ren and Kyoko's friend Kanae are part of the cast and the signs seem to be that Kyoko will be offered an acting part eventually.
It's great to just read the showbiz stuff without Ren and Kyoko's romance issues hanging around like an unnecessarily unresolved plot point.
I am looking forward to new chapters, now that I have caught-up. But I am also not sure about the release schedule. So I'll play it by ear and with luck, there will be a additional seasons of the anime too!

Since I've been getting a few asks about it btw, I wanted to make my position clear. I don't discuss relationships in the show a lot and you probably only see me speak negatively about some aspects so some clarification might help.
I'm not against the general idea of romance in shows.
When done right, I think a romantic subplot in a show or movie or game can be really good. It can tie together all the themes while not distracting from the main plot. Sometimes even when it's distracting from the main plot, it makes sense and is worthwhile and adds to the main plot.
If you've known my blog for a long time, you'll know I'm not exactly an avid tv show watcher. I still want to provide an example of what I mean though so I'll reference one of the manga I've been reading since I was a teenager.
It's called Skip Beat! I honestly don't know if it's considered popular or niche but I'll give you a general synopsis. The main character, Kyouko Mogami was a girl from the countryside who was basically a glorified maid for her childhood friend, Sho Fuwa. Due to her harsh family circumstances, she grew up in Sho's home and from what we know about their lives, she was being trained (groomed???) to be his future wife. She was fine with it because she loved him.
But Sho wanted to be a star, so against his parents wishes, he took Kyouko with him to the big city to make it big. Which he did and it gave him a bigger head than he already had. He tossed her aside in favor of his new life in a pretty cruel way.
Kyouko vowed vengeance upon him. She would become an even bigger star than him and run him out of town. She vowed to never fall in love again and closed herself off. I know I'm writing this as if it's a sob story, but when I say it's a vengeance plot I mean that literally.
From there, the plot revolves around how far she'll go just for her vengeance. But, as the plot moves along, you can start to see how her icy heart is melting for someone else and how much anguish that brings her. The main plot is about her becoming a star, but the part where she learns to love again (someone else mind you) is a crucial part in all that.
I would suggest you read it butttttt it's the slowest burn in the history of all histories so you might suffer just as much as I have.
I really appreciate how this story might have a big romantic sub plot but it ties in nicely with her goals of self improvement and wanting to be a star, moving on from all her pain and being happy.
When it comes to Stranger Things...... I just do NOT feel that way at all.
Skip Beat! has a love triangle. Honestly at this point, it's more like an octagon and yet it doesn't bother me. There is a lot of "Will they won't they" but it still doesn't bother me.
It may be that Skip Beat! just has a more interesting subplot so the little baby half baked romantic drama in Stranger Things is just boring for me?
Maybe it's that I feel like the romantic drama and tension in Skip Beat! is actually leading somewhere and leads to character development while the romantic drama in Stranger Things feels played up for audience reaction and fandom discourse?
Like sure, Skip Beat! has some fandom discourse but everyone is pretty much on the same page or can, for the most part, respectfully discuss their preferences. With Stranger Things, if you so much as comment on a ship in the wrong way you'll have a gaggle of people harassing you over fictional characters.
To summarize,
I think romantic stuff in tv shows and movies and all that can be really fun, interesting, heartbreaking, all the entertaining things one could want.
I, personally, feel none of that when romantic stuff is happening in Stranger Things. Maybe in the first and second season but beyond that...? For example, while I wouldn't exactly call myself a shipper, I am and was rooting for Jopper from the getgo. (I say that because I think a shipper would be much more invested in the pair. Like fanart, fanfiction, following dedicated blogs etc. I don't really do that)
If the show writers decided to reintroduce Lonnie into the plot and then acted like he had a legitimate chance to get back with Joyce because she starts wavering between Hopper and Lonnie.... do you really expect me to freakin' care? Am I really supposed to care about this love triangle introduced? You actually expect me to get invested in such lazy writing? I just cannot.
My interest in Jopper would probably be eradicated to be honest because they just wasted time with a love triangle instead of developing them as a couple. All that wasted time could've been spent developing the main plot which in turn would've given them more opportunities to write them a s couple working together, protecting each other, etc. You know, substance.
See what I mean? I just... cannot care about Stranger Things ships. It's great if you can though, there are so many reasons to watch a show. Maybe for you, love triangles are the bees knees and the best thing since sliced bread so you'd be eating up another triangle like nobody's business. But that's not me.
I would much rather they focus moving the plot forward, which would naturally create moments between the characters we all care about.
Fandom behavior factors into a bit of this as well of course. Kinda hard to care about or get invested in a relationship if all you see all day is people arguing about canon (which at the end of the day doesn't matter) while also doxxing and harassing each other. Not to mention taking the worst possible interpretation of characters possible just because you think they're in the way of your ship. Dunno how anyone can care about or enjoy a shipping fandom like that.
SO yeah. That's it. Romance is stuff is fine and all, but I just don't jive with how Stranger Things rolled out it's romance stuff so I prefer to think about other things.

Formerly Titled "The Chicken and The Snake"
.
For all intents and purposes, Kyoko Mogami was a chicken.
Which wasn’t to say that she was a literal chicken--though depending on who you asked--perhaps she was. She was as much of a girl as any other girl on the planet, but when she was born, the fates had looked at her soul and decided: chicken. And, so, her skin was marked with the elegant swoop of a hen.
Sho hated his animal soul. He had been marked with the diminutive mark of a chihuahua. He always said that he could have had any other dog, and of course, he got the least threatening of them all.
He never told people about his soul-kin, opted to wear long sleeves to cover every inch of his skin, and instead saved all his money from a young age for tattoos. Every lie, every joke he made about the animals that shared his soul, he tattooed across his skin until he was an everyday menagerie. The only people who knew the truth were Kyoko and his family, and the earliest tattoo artists. Everybody else bought into the myth of the boy with a hundred souls. In any case, it made for a hell of a stage persona.
When Kyoko moved with Sho to Tokyo, she realized a lot of people were like him. Hiding their soul-kin. With other tattoos. Well-placed scarves and clothing choices. Though it wasn’t always out of shame. A lot of the times it was always out of some sort of ill-placed prejudice. Tokyo, she found, was a lot louder about the prejudices associated with the soul tattoos.
She saw a lot of people turned away from jobs because the managers didn’t want to deal with certain animals. Kyoko knew she was lucky because a chicken was at least neutral to most people. She was a dedicated worker. Occasionally loud. But reliable to get her job done. It was easy for her to secure the jobs she needed to support her and Sho through their move.
Unlike Kyoko, Sho remained jobless until he secured his manager and contract. Because if Tokyo was prejudiced against certain animals, it wasn’t kind to those who tried to hide, either. Nobody in the city knew which of Sho’s tattoos were real, which ones they could trust. So, they didn’t trust him at all. Not that this bothered Sho.
He thought of the whole situation as some sort of elaborate game and let it fuel his songwriting. Which eventually turned into his first single. “Trust,” he called it.
Ironic, given Kyoko learned with the release of the album that single was on that Sho Fuwa could not be trusted at all. Sho was cheating on her--though in the end, maybe it wasn’t cheating if they weren’t technically dating, so much as roommates with history--and Kyoko remembered that Sho’s bravado was just that. Bravado.

More obscure muses ( Introduction ) series.
Fandom: Skip Beat.
Muse #2- Ren Tsuruga / Kuon Hizuri
Tumblr media
Age 20-22 ( manga and anime )
Ren Tsuruga, real name Kuon Hizuri, is an actor working for the entertainment company, LME. He is currently ranked Japan's most desirable man. Ren is a very strong-willed person. He can be childish and short-tempered when his real personality slips out. Ren is a people-pleaser and often hides his true feelings behind his "gentleman smile", which works most of the time. He is labeled by many as "The Co-star killer" for his ability to make his leading ladies fall in-love with him. He is also a model for a clothing line called R'Mandy.
Ren is very serious about his work, and will not act seriously with nor respect anyone who does not take pride in acting. Hence, he disliked Kyoko Mogami at first, because her motives for joining showbiz were "impure," as Kyoko herself puts it. Both Yukihito Yashiro and Lory Takarada noted that most of his past relationships were shallow. Lory points out that Ren has never really fallen in love before. Ren routinely skips or opts for convenient meals and is regularly chastised by Kyoko for his poor habits.
Ren works hard to maintain his "gentlemanly" image, so he does not let his temper get the best of him when Sho Fuwa knocks over an ash tray in front of him, nor ask for help when he doesn't understand lines because he is not a native Japanese speaker. It is also shown that Ren acts indifferent and calm when extremely happy. In times of extreme anger, he has been known to excuse himself from the room to collect himself.
It is later revealed that Tsuruga Ren is a mask for Kuon Hizuri. Ren is deeply disturbed when Kuon breaks free on the set of Tragic Marker. So far, Kyoko is the only one able to break him out of this state with her voice or actions. Lory is aware of this side of Ren and warns Kyoko of it without directly telling her about it. Yashiro also knows nothing of this personality, though he suspects Ren had a past that is different to his current facade.
Although Ren dislikes and even fears Kuon, his true personality is not entirely bad. He drops his Ren facade in Guam and interacts with Kyoko as his true self for a full afternoon. She instantly recognizes him as "the fairy prince" she met as a child. And the two of them reconnect, as if no time has passed. As Kuon, Kyoko is less guarded around him. Because Kyoko is so open with Kuon, Ren finds himself wishing on one occasion that he had not dyed his hair back to brown.
The public knows nothing about Ren's past and background. Only his parents and Lory Takarada know about his real background. Ren is revealed to be Corn, a 10-year old boy Kyoko Mogami met when she was six years old. Ren told Bo the Chicken ( in which Kyoko is actually inside the suit ) that he used to get fired all the time when he was starting in showbiz.
In truth, Ren's real name is Kuon Hizuri. He is the son of Kuu Hizuri and Juliena Hizuri, who are popular personas in showbiz in America. He was raised in America up to the age of 15. Kuon always lived in the shadow of his father's greatness. He tried to break into the show-biz world, only to suffer many rejections. Because of this, a darker side took over Kuon and he grew distant from his parents.
Flashbacks from his teenage years imply a violent past such as acting in gangs and getting into fights. Lory brought Kuon back to Japan when he was fifteen. It was then that he adopted the stage name "Ren Tsuruga" and went on to become the most popular male actor in Japan. Kuon has a Russian, American and Japanese mix heritage, which explains why he can speak Japanese, English and Russian fluently.
