#OTD in 1602 – “Red” Hugh O’Donnell dies in Simancas, Spain; evidence suggests he was poisoned by an English spy.
Red Hugh O’Donnell (Aodh Ruaidh Uí Dhomhnaill) is one of the most famous heroes of Ireland. He was viewed as the fulfilment of an old prophecy, and was imprisoned as a boy by the English who saw him as a threat. He escaped from Dublin Castle in 1591, in company with the sons of the O’Neill. Word of the escape shot through the land. Hugh formed an alliance with the O’Neills and by the end of May…

The “Sisto V” room in the Monastery of San Lorenzo Maggiore was once the friars’ refectory, but in 1442 it became the seat of the Neapolitan Parliament.  In the first half of the 17th century, Luigi Rodriguez painted frescoes on the ceiling depicting the seven Christian virtues.  The hall was named in honor of Pope Sixtus V.

Hvar Town
A wonderful day trip from Split, Hvar Town is on Hvar Island, reached in just over an hour by frequent catamarans. The town is home to 4,000 inhabitants but receives up to 20,000 visitors a day, though when I visited in early June it wasn’t that busy thankfully. It is an upmarket sort of place, with a beautiful waterfront. To keep things decent they have some rather large penalties for…

The Upper Room in Mount Zion
The Upper Room in Mount Zion
Our tour bus was making its way back towards Jerusalem to explore the hillside town of Mount Zion, a short walk outside of the Zion Gate.  During the time of Jesus, it was located within the city walls of Jerusalem as noted on the Madaba Map until the Byzantine walls were erected in the 16th century. Mount Zion is most known as the location of the Upper Room where Jesus and His disciples took…

Monastery of St.Anthony Abbot
The monastery is located at the tip of the city Rab, upon the ruins and park called Dorka, near the central city port. It was founded in the 11 century as a refugee for aristocrats. It is closed to the public, as nuns still live in it.

Dubrovnik
I had mixed feelings about visiting Dubrovnik, but was pleasantly surprised in the end. Pre-Covid it had become a prime example of over tourism, with vast numbers of cruise ship passengers and other visitors swamping the Old Town. Though very busy on a Saturday in early June 2023 it was reasonably straightforward to avoid the masses, by venturing down the backstreets or visiting the quiet…

In the sacred rhythm of life, I’ve traversed the corridors of worldly toil, and now, as the soul seeks solace, consider the cloistered embrace of Carmelite silence—a divine refuge where the symphony of prayer echoes through the chambers of contemplation, transcending the melancholy of mundane endeavors.
