my super head-in-the-clouds dreamy wishlist of cool features i want in star stable (but let's be real they would never add):

-cart/carriage driving. put harnesses on your ponies and you and your friends could ride around together in a cart. or tandem riding i guess, but i like the aesthetics of cart driving. combined driving obstacle courses.

-customizable show jumping courses and cross country courses. Even dressage tests and working equitation. an edit mode where you can place a variety of jumps in an arena or along a trail. Invite your friends or club to come check them out.

-customizable barns. i know they said this wasn't feasible at the moment but also not completely off the table in the future but. i want it. :(

-a pasture and turn out for your horses. idle animations while they graze or play in the field.

-better herding mechanics. cow cutting and roping?

-actually, while on that note: i think the horse could turn at a slightly faster rate while at lower speeds but that's more of a game-feel thing for me.

-also i honestly i think it's a crime it costs star coins to change your horses' mane. Make it shillings and let players customize mane and tail separately. Plait your horse's mane and tail for shows or give them a body clip. Could even add some little designs like how people clip a checkerboard pattern into their horses' flank and rump. Cutiemark clips lol.

- speaking of shows, maybe there could be more low-stakes competitions? Like every weekend there could be a 1 day eventing trial, or dressage test and the top scoring players and horses would get ribbons like how championships work now? something to shoot for, but if you don't win there's always next time and/or you get a nice consolation prize simply for competing.

- and while I'm here dreaming please also give me big new regions to explore and run around in, thank you. the northern wilds that the wild wardens are supposed to protect, a deserty area? if that even makes sense on jorvik??, etc

Beel has a mental list of all your comfort foods and drinks that he buys for you. he even has Satan put a spell on them so he won't accidentally eat them (they are emergency feel-better snacks just for you because he doesn't like it when you feel you upset)

Belphie taught himself how to knit so he could make you a big soft blanket that was covered in his scent for you to sleep with (he's currently teaching himself how to sew a pillowcase for you covered in tiny sleepy sheep)

Diavolo always makes sure to have the first dance of the night with you at any event that he holds in his castle. he lowkey finds it amusing to watch Lucifer and his brothers get all antsy about not being able to fight over who gets to dance with you first.

Barbatos always has your favorite teas stocked up in a separate section of the cupboard right next to a teacup he had custom-made for you and only you to drink out of.

Simeon always texts you to come over whenever he's finished writing something, you're the only one who gets to read his rough drafts and make little annotations for him (let's not forget about the little hearts you add at the bottom of each page to signal that it's been fully annotated)

Solomon takes time out of his weekends to sit down and teach you spells, hexes, and potions so that you'll do better in class. he also makes sure to make notebooks for each topic with reminders and notes so that you'll have a quick reference guide for when he's not with you (and it's an excuse for him to spend time with you)

Luke always sets aside a serving for you of whatever he has baked so that you can try it before Beel inhales everything (as if he'd do the same for the brothers! besides Simeon, you're his favorite person)

i just got diagnosed with me cfs about a month ago. I've been bedbound since July (doctors think I got it post-covid) and I'm extremely bored. I've been working on isolation by seeing friends once a week but it's just like... how do i fill the rest of my time? I can't stand to watch tv or scroll tumblr anymore, the internet is making me depressed. So what do I do? I'm sleeping like 16 hours a day. I can only get up to do simple chores and stuff. I struggle with reading/processing info and I lie down most of the day. How do I entertain myself? Especially with something that feels fun, satisfying, and "productive."

TLDR: newly bedbound and in need of a hobby I can do offline from bed, please help <3

hi, thanks for asking! I also spent the vast majority of the first 3 or so years I had CFS laying down, it can definitely be difficult to find stuff to do. Here are some things I did:

Video games. This one is a pretty common recommendation but I can't not recommend it because it's what I do pretty much all the time. If you have trouble positioning a computer like I did you can get an overbed desk (I have this one and it's served me pretty well). If you're looking for game reccs, the Sims 4 is now free and there's a ton of free custom content available for it online for when you get bored of basegame. For paid games, Minecraft, Don't Starve Together (even if you're playing alone the Together version is better), Oxygen Not Included, 7 Days to Die, and Sheltered all have a ton of replayability. I also recommend adding items to your wishlist and waiting for sales if you're buying games off Steam, Sheltered is actually on sale for $3 on Steam until Nov. 21.

Textile work. There's a reason a lot of textiles are considered "grandma" hobbies, they're easy to do with limited energy. There's a ton of disability adaptations for textile projects like knitting, crocheting, embroidery, weaving, etc. Choose one that seems fun to learn and go for it. I tried to do knitting but found it hard laying down so I switched to crochet and it's been going pretty well. It's fairly inexpensive as well, crochet hooks are like $5 and you can fine cheap yarn at places like Walmart for less than $5.

Art. You don't have to be good at it or have fancy supplies, either. I'm a big fan of coloring books, both physical ones and coloring book apps. I also use an app called Sketchbook to make digital art on my phone sometimes. You can trace stock photos to help you practice, or you can just make your entire art process tracing and coloring in stock photos.

Writing. Another one you don't have to be good at. Just think of stuff and write it down. You don't even need to write it down if you don't want to, you can just tell yourself stories in your head as well. Writing fanfiction can be a tool to help you get inspired to write your own stuff too. I got into writing by writing Warrior cats fanfic that was objectively bad, but it was fun and it laid the groundwork for making my own stuff. You can also just keep writing fanfiction if that's what you enjoy.

Origami. This one's a little niche but I find makng origami very satisfying. Some people claim you need special origami paper, you don't, regular notebook paper is fine. The instructions from this website have been useful for me.

Wait I have to ask what happened to dig? I have it wishlisted and heard its got another free dlc in the works as well so I was looking forward to it (reported issues with softlocks/need for more varied items aside)

Don't get me wrong, I've spent over 90 hours playing this game and I still roll around in for a couple runs/trying to complete the DLC. My main problem is with how the game itself is structured.

I do like a challenging game, I like going in a game and being an absolute noob and then learn as time goes on in hopes of getting some rewads, and getting said rewards; whether is some extra content, upgrades, a secret ending or heck just progression in the story (if the game does have it). And Dig gives you that! You can get multiple endings and a heck ton of collectibles (some of them being upgrades, some just lore stuff)

The problem I have with this is, however, with how all of those rewards are not much great thing compared to the effort you must put to gain them. The levels are generated in a way that game selects a bunch of levels segments (of various difficult) and puts together a level, however unless you play on PC and have the last updates on, you have no way to know what segments you're gonna get and you can get very dang unlucky on just level one. By making the level going down, you don't always see where you jump off, there are issues with the spawning and dodging of enemies (they can just gang up on you leaving you little to no possibility to avoid them), the difficulty spike is absurd. In order to get the true ending, you must satisfy very specific requirements that are so hard to pull if the elements they are based on are just RNG. The whole game is based on RNG. Normally you would get a couple few static points for upgrading yourself in a roguelike, Dig doesn't do that. There were times I reached the final boss with basically no upgrade because of how unlucky I got.

Not to mention some of the achievements are based as well on requirements that are RNG-based. For example there is the "Dirty Poor" feat, but in Dig gems are literally everywhere the levels are designed so that you *will* get gems. You must be incredibly lucky to get those 3 gemless segments in the first world to get the feat, making it one of the most difficult feats to achieve not because of difficulty but due to being based on luck. And so many other feats are like that. I could give out more examples but I don't want to spoil much of neither the vanilla game or the DLC, but basically the whole game feels more like playing with a gambling machine rather than a roguelike.

Many players have reported such issues, alongside the bugs and glitches, but the difficulty was never adjusted. The possibility to select your own level segments is exclusive to Steam. No improvement was made regarding the entire game being so luck-based, and instead the DLC just adds more restrictions and further rises the already high difficulty spike to an insane degree that made many casual players drop Dig completely, and I know of less than five people who were able to 100% the game and DLC with cheat options on (extra life, powered up attack, etc. Etc.). Also enabling said cheat options make impossible to get feats.

The game ends up feeling like a chore to go through at times, as the player must rely more on luck than actual skill and adaptability. And so far, no change was made despite the multiple complains of fans; hopefully with the upcoming DLC they will fix such issues, but who to say. The last update ended up adding more issues than solutions, make more players drop, and add even more elements to the RNG blender.

Does the story pay off? Perhaps, but it does not make up for the hours and attempts it takes to actually finish the story. Nor do much the rest of aestethic rewards, nor the upgrades since you may just never get them in your run.

I feel like I was too harsh on Dig, and perhaps I am. I was really waiting for this game and was excited to see the characters and new levels but that wish just quickly wore off when I could not even get past half the game because I could not find, due to bad luck, the upgrades I needed to continue further in a non-hardcore way.

I would suggest playing Dig only to players who are down to spend a ton of time to progress and don't mind the amount of luck required, and just want to try experience the lore bits and visuals on their own rather than from a video. But I wouldn't feel in good faith suggesting this game without underlining the somewhat brutal difficulty and the fact it ends up relying more in luck and the player's patience rather than their skills. If you play it expecting a rogue-like, then it's not- exactly one lol. Think of it more like a arcade game.

That's about what I have to say about Shovel Knight Dig. I still do play it because I don't take too seriously unfair deaths and such, but I wish this game was more accessible to players of all kinds as some friends don't have as much time or energy to spend playing such a luck-based game. I think the game has the potential for being a genuine enjoyable experience for everyone and not just hardcore/completionists/similar kind of players but yeah, we got what we got, and devs both from Nitrome and YCG don't seem to care too much. Which is understandable considering all the projects they are making, but still somewhat sad.

This thread from Game Of Diplomacy AU* remains to be one of my favourite things I've ever written. It has a high stakes power struggle with tension you can cut with a knife, it has angst and conflict with counterbalancing moments of levity, it is deliciously dark and the clever verbal sparring challenged me in a really refreshing way, keeping me on my toes. I think it contains some of my best writing to date.

*This AU gained a surprisingly big following - it even has its own fanart! Years later my writing partner and I still get occasional asks about it/people still go on like sprees through the threads, which is really sweet. I am forever mindblown and deeply touched that so many people have enjoyed this random niche rarepair story my partner and I wrote for fun.

I'm also very proud of this Arcane rp thread, which sparked off a whole AU that my writing partner and I are still actively developing and enjoying two years later.

Back to Basics and Style Inspiration

You know I’m a proponent of wearing what you already have in your closet, even though I do love to shop! I believe in buying the best quality pieces you can afford, for the most part, because these pieces will last for so much longer and you’ll feel good wearing them! Honestly, I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t want to bring anything into my closet that won’t still be wearable in five or even ten years. It’s just time for me at 60 years old to have a wardrobe that is full of classic, wearable pieces. Of course, there are exceptions…a few fun trendy pieces thrown in here and there make your wardrobe fun but even those, if purchased with care and thought can last for years!

January is my least favorite time of the year because of the weather and also because of the lack of sunlight! I thrive in the warmer months, but, alas…January is here and I do want to make the most of it! I find myself wanting to simplify everything after the excess of the holiday season, with clear, clutter free spaces and that also translates to my wardrobe! Basic pieces mixed and matched make me feel easily put together! Here are a few outfit ideas made up of basic pieces that you probably already own in some form! I hope you feel inspired!

I love the idea of wearing my Sambas with leather pants (these are recycled)…it’s a look I hadn’t thought of before, but why not? A basic white tee (closet essential) with a camel cardigan gets dressed up with a gold chain and a black bag completes the look! You’ll see me in this look often in the coming days!

I believe everyone needs a black leather jacket (or three)! I have a biker jacket, a more conservative leather jacket from Theory and a very old just basic black jacket that I still love and wear! I would like to add a black leather blazer to the mix this season if I can find just the right one! A leather jacket in some form or fashion is such a classic look that anyone can pull off and it pairs with jeans, trousers, skirts and even looks great with a dress! This look is classic and fabulous street style with the lug sole boots and medium wash jeans. Throw on the same white tee under the jacket, put your aviator sunglasses on, grab your bag and you’re out the door in style!

A herringbone coat is so stylish and classic and…I have a brown one but not a black one, so this one piece I’ve added to my wishlist! It’s a perfect everyday coat that’s just a bit more stylish than a solid coat but works just as well with most outfits! Loafers are trending and classic at the same time (also love these metallic ones) and a good black turtleneck is something that every woman (and man) needs as well as a pair of black sunglasses! I’m so in love with the YSL bag, but unfortunately, that’s for another day…a girl can dream!

I’m throwing in this picture as an example of how you can wear older pieces from your closet. I purchased the white blouse from Zara and found a little Pinterest inspiration on how to style it in an unusual way! It’s a pretty basic blouse that would go well with most anything, but I decided to style it under this embellished military jacket from Free People that I found in Nashville about 6 years ago! I loved the jacket then and I still love it…as far as I’m concerned, it will never go out of style! I added a very old bag from Chloe (at least 10 years old), a pair of clog booties that I purchased last season and my lower rise skinny jeans from Moussy Vintage (these are still some of my favorite jeans and are about 3 years old)! The pearl necklace is a little unexpected, but that’s what I like about it! The moral to this story is that if you really love something, you can find a way to wear it, so buy what you love and hang on to it! I’ve never been one to sell my nice things after a season because I still love them. Eventually, even if I take a break from wearing something, I’ll come back to it and revisit it in another way! It really is fun to get creative with your wardrobe!

Subverting tropes: Black woman protector with happy ending

Hi there! I’m writing a dragons-and-magic fantasy story, and am concerned my Black protagonist falls into the Strong Black Woman / Mammy stereotype. She was bullied and excluded as a child for her “weird” interests (alchemy, engineering) and as an effect of that undealt-with trauma, felt pushed to protect other outcast kids from that same fate; essentially trying to “save” the young girl inside her who was never protected through protecting others.

She was also forced into even more of a “protector” role by her family. She was burdened with the role of caring for her mother and siblings when their father passed away. All this has lead to my character repressing things like her hobbies, her scared/sad side, small stuff like her use of a sword and shield when she would rather use a bow & arrow—she feels like the shield is more useful to keep others safe, etc.

I try to show how much this role of “Independent, Unfeeling Protector” she’s been forced into has hurt and worn her down, and how it isn’t a good thing. Her overall arc is about learning to be cared for by her family, expressing her emotions, reconnecting with her buried interests, and letting herself fall in love. Her love interest is a kind, emotionally open Black woman, and she has friends who are PoC that are varied and aren’t protector/independent types.

My concern is that I’m still perpetuating that stereotype of the Strong Black Woman who takes care of everyone—even if it’s caused by trauma and loss. I don’t know what the line is between dismantling a trope or perpetuating it and what my role is as a white writer is, and was wondering if you had any thoughts on this. Thank you so much!

Research and feedback are key

I do appreciate that the narrative is addressing these stereotypes to subvert, as opposed to “Embracing” the Strong Black Woman and Mammy roles as acceptable characterization. Allowing her to break free from this role and have her happy ending is great as well. 

However, this seems like a deep undertaking of trauma that you absolutely need to be equipped to write. Your subject matter goes beyond just stereotypes, but forced parenting. 

Mod Norma adds “Definitely agree that parentification is a real form of abuse.”

So, as always, please do your research on such subject matter and have the appropriate sensitivity readers take a look at your story. 

Cue your audience on what’s to come

Something to also note is that, while you are subverting the tropes, some BIPOC readers just 

aren’t interested in subverting as representation

would prefer to read such stories from those who are of that identity and/or have direct experience with the topic(s)

To quote Mod Elaney from the mod representation wishlist

“Lastly, I personally do not want these tropes to be explored and subverted by people, I want them to be avoided entirely because I feel that normalizing positive representation rather than commenting on negative representation is far more beneficial and validating to the people these works are supposed to help and represent. We don’t need sympathy, we need empathy!”

With an extra layer of abuse as a subject matter, that could also make things less palpable to some. 

That isn’t to say you “Can’t” write these subjects of course. Simply check your motivations. Write this because this is a topic you want to address and will heavily research and gather proper feedback on.

I (personally) have to be in the right mood for novels that address Black women going through abuse and oppression. Knowing it isn’t all about that and there’s a bright future for her does soften the blow, though. If there’s any way you can clarify to readers that this isn’t a book simply about “The struggle” and there is a hearty balance of hope and happiness for her, then that makes all the difference.

Additional advice

This sounds like a story that could potentially deconstruct the Strong Black Woman and/or Mammy Tropes. If your intention is to show how harmful these roles can play out and how your character is much much more than those roles, showing how she may first seem that way due to suppression of herself, then I think it will be a hard book to write, but a very good read when you succeed.

That said, this story needs to be written by someone who really knows what they’re doing in regards to these tropes, the portrayed identities/representation, and the mentioned trauma and abuse. These are incredibly complicated and hard to do respectfully and properly and even when you’re able to use your own experiences, you’ll need to do a lot of deep research. Especially given the amount of trauma here, this can easily become trauma-porn as well.

Greetings, Mao Mao community!

It's that time of year once more! I know this hiatus has been a long one, but I hope this event will keep the community a bit more active. I am very happy to be hosting our third annual Mao Mao Secret Halloween event!

In case you don't know what a Secret Halloween is, it's like Secret Santa, but with a spooky theme instead. You will be exchanging gifts to one another anonymously!

Of course, there are still very important rules attached to this. PLEASE read this whole thing before submitting your wishlist in the comments, and feel free to spread word! The more the merrier!

1. This is the most important thing: Do not tell ANYONE who you're making a gift for. Nobody is supposed to know until your submission is complete and posted! If you have any personal issues with who you get, please message me.

2. You need to fill out the wishlist COMPLETELY in order to be registered into the entry list. Please provide details and links to character references, specific poses, etc. Whatever will help the artist/writer understand what you want! Don't be afraid to share your exact wishes!

3. You cannot make changes to your wishlist once the entries close, which will be September 25th. Message me if you need to change something before then.

4. If you are going to enter this event, PLEASE be mindful that you need to have your entry submitted before or on October 31st. If you know you're going to be busy on the day of Halloween, please upload it beforehand. If you're seriously struggling with mental health, or you feel unsure that you'll be able to complete this, please take care of yourself first and do not apply. Dropouts may happen in emergencies, but I'd like to keep that from happening as much as possible.

5. Put in as much effort into your gift as you can! Everyone's style and skill is different, but we can tell what's rushed and what isn't. DO NOT submit traced or stolen artwork. It cannot be drawn over official artwork, either. If you are a writer, please try to write at LEAST 500 words! Nobody wants only a paragraph of their request, it needs to have effort as well.

6. Everybody will be paired at random, but artists and writers will be in their own categories. YOU MUST CHOOSE BETWEEN ARTIST OR WRITER, EVEN IF YOU DO BOTH. That way, an artist will give and receive artwork, while a writer will give and receive a oneshot/short story. I do this because it seems the most fair to participants. If you have any complaints about the gift you receive, please message me privately.

7. PLEASE tag me in your entry so I know you did it! And of course, tag the person you're giving the gift to, so they can see their request and know who they got their gift from!

8. OCs are allowed, as well as pairings ( Canon/Canon or OC/Canon ). But two things to keep in mind: It all must be Halloween related, so please don't try to make it all about romance. Also, if you use an OC, please describe them as much as you can, so the receiver can capture their personality.

9. Have fun and treat everyone with respect! Also, please be aware that I'm only one person with college and other events occurring at the same time. If I make any mistakes, please correct me.
