Mohamed’s sister and her family, seven people in total, are currently living inside a barbershop in the besieged Gaza Strip, where Israel’s massive attack continues to destroy lives and infrastructure.

There is no bathroom at the barbershop, and among the people living there are children. Mohamed, a truck driver from Calgary, is desperate to hear information from the Canadian government about when, or if, his relatives will be able to come to Canada.

He told The Maple that he applied to sponsor his sister and her family to come to Canada under a temporary resident visa program for extended family members in Gaza.

The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the program on January 9, and Mohamed said he filed his application on January 15. He has so far heard nothing.

As of March 4, a total of just 12 individuals from Gaza have been approved to come to Canada. They left Gaza “on their own,” according to the ministry, and were able to complete their applications and submit biometrics. The 12 individuals have to arrange their own passage to Canada, and none have yet arrived. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: Let it be known that Canada has done absolutely nothing to get Palestinian-Canadians out of Ghazzah. Absolutely nothing. They have to escape on their own, they have to find the means to travel back to Canada on their own. So of course they'd treat Palestinians with no Canadian citizenship like this. Canada treats its own citizens as foreigners when they're Palestinian. Canada is complicit in genocide.

im asking this out of pure ignorance but I've always wondered how does hinduism handle people who are not hindu? i know Christianity is essentially 'be the right kind of christian or go to hell' (so much as to beleive that Jewish people are literally devils, for example) but i was wondering how hinduism deals w people who are in proximity but not of the same religion. also if a dalit or lower caste person converts from hinduism to another religion, how does that affect thier life and how they're treated? appreciate your answer if u feel like explaining ^__^

it depends, in some parts of the country the non hindu has the same status as the lower caste dalit by default – so exclusion but in most places its a detente where religious and caste endogamy is strictly maintained. housing and employment discrimination is v common. its actually much harder to marry under the special mariage act and violence against interfaith and intercaste couples by their own families is common. in 2023, the muslim is the designated enemy of the state. the christian was fooled by the british and/or money to give up their culture or is literally a foreign agent. if you're looking for a textual answer, the equivalent of the "infidel," there isn’t really one because the streamlining of the canonical religious texts and construction of the hindu is recent. hinduism has aimed to appropriate instead of convert.

in modern india, legally anyone who is not a christian or a muslim is treated as a hindu. you are hindu by default in india to the state, governed by hindu codes for marriage and inheritance. for indigenous tribals it is a matter of coercing their children to feel shame at the (state sponsored but outsourced to private religious groups, love privatisation!!!) residential schools about their animist practices and making them worship the proper gods. for sikhs, jains and buddhists their is marginally more toleration. but they are basically seen as wayward hindu sects. this does change when they're in conflict with the majority in a way that resists "national cohesion" – see sikh pogroms in 1984 and the recent moves against sikhism due to the invocation of khalistan in the farmers protests. when dalits convert to buddhism many right wingers will invoke the spectre of predatory conversions.

since you are supposed to be hindu by default, christians and muslims are then seen as invasive outsiders and conversions are regulated very strictly by many states. it is historically true that christian missionaries brought christianity as part of a broader civilising mission, but imo it says something really depressing about hinduism that its epithets for christians is 'ricebag converts' bc people apparently converted for a bag of rice. islam's foothold in the continent is older, accompanying immigration from the west as well as the sultanate and the mughals. returning these christians and muslims to the fold, or "ghar wapsi" is a major project of the hindutva right. note that india is home to one of the world's largest populations of muslims (~200mil).

lower caste dalits have long converted to christianity and islam but caste violence follows them there anyway. caste may have textual origins in religion and focus on ritual purity but it is a socioeconomic form of subjugation. this means that while still subject to caste violence, dalit christians and muslims will be denied redressal through state protections like legislations against anti caste violence or reservations because those are restricted to hindu dalits.

I’m confused. Why would he get deported? He’s married to (presumably) a US citizen already. Not sure if I missed something?

Well, the simplest explanation is that everyone who immigrates/emigrates to the US has to fill out paperwork to stay here. Doesn't matter who you are, who your family is, who you're married to, where you're from, what money you have. Everyone fills out the paperwork.

Being married to a US citizen only affects the type of visa (Spouse of US Citizen) you get and which application (Form I-130, the Petition for Alien Relative) your sponsor fills out to start the process.

The longer/more detailed explanation of the process, and the background for the lawsuit about Harry's visa application, is this:

(Apologies for how small the text is. I didn't want it to be a multi-page thing.) I'll describe it below the jump.

But essentially, Harry's process to become a legal permanent resident through his marriage to a US citizen is:

Sponsor/Meghan submits Form I-130 to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), requesting approval to bring her spouse to live with her in the US.

USCIS reviews the form and will approve (left green circle) or deny (left red circle) the application. If they deny it, that ends the process. They can try again later. If they approve it, then:

Sponsor/Meghan pays a bunch of fees and a visa case is opened.

(The big giant square text) More paperwork and documents are submitted. Meghan and Harry do this together. (I'll explain this in a bit.)

The Spouse/Harry has his immigration interview.

USCIS will review the visa case file and make a decision on whether to approve or deny the visa request. If they deny the visa, then depending on the justification for denial, the Spouse/Harry may request a waiver or he can submit additional documentation for further consideration. If the visa is approved, then the Spouse/Harry is given approval to travel to the US and once he's here, he gets permanent residency - aka "the green card."

Now, getting back to the giant text block and the "more paperwork" requirement. In this phase of the process for a spousal visa, the couple must provide:

An affadavit of support from the Sponsor/Meghan (this basically says that she has enough income to support Harry and they won't need government assistance)

Supporting financial documents (probably tax declarations)

Harry's passport

Additional photographs of Harry

Form DS-260, the Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application from Harry (this is Harry's application for residency)

Harry's birth certificate

Their marriage certificate

Harry's military records (the US requires anyone with military service in any country to submit)

Harry's police certificate (information about whether he has been arrested or charged with crimes/what kinds)

Harry's Medical Examination form (which sometimes is done after the interview)

Form DS-260 is the big one. It basically asks the immigrant (Harry, in this case) about everything in his life: his childhood, his work history, his social media accounts, where he's lived, his family of origin, his children, previous travel to the US, medical and health details (including history of substance abuse. communicable diseases, and vaccination record), criminal history, security and background details, and social security.

If you're found to have lied about anything on this form - for instance, something pops on the background check that isn't disclosed or your answers in the interview are inconsistent with what's reported on the form or your social media tells a totally different story - it's grounds for your application to be denied and, if you're already here in the US, you to be deported.

This is what the DHS/Homeland Security lawsuit is about. The DS-260 has a question about drug use. The Heritage Foundation (the plaintiff in the case) is suing DHS to find out what Harry reported about his drug use on the form and in his medical history because historically, the US does not allow people with drug addictions or past drug use into the country. After Harry's admissions in Spare that he's basically a functioning addict, the Heritage Foundation assumed that Harry said "no" on the drug use question (which would be a lie) and they want to find out if he was given special treatment because of being Queen Elizabeth's grandson. (I also suspect the Heritage Foundation wants to find out if Harry has a regular passport or is traveling/living in the US on a diplomatic passport as well.)

So going back to your original question, yes, Harry can still be deported even if he is the spouse of a US citizen and even if he is a permanent resident. All the marriage to a US citizen means is what forms get filled out and what supporting documentation is submitted. That's all; there aren't any other protections involved in being married to a US citizen.

But there is a benefit to immigrating via a "green card marriage" - if you come to the US on any other kind of visa, the requirements are much stricter and the waiting period for eligibility can sometimes take much longer. Particularly on the latter, the US actually has requirements on how many people per country can immigrate/travel in a given a year, even if you're sponsored by a business or a friend or a family member (eg a brother or uncle). So some people end up waiting years to move to the US; that's just the demand on the system. But with a "green card marriage," you get to jump most of the queues and your waiting period for eligibility disappears in an instant. You can literally begin your application to move to the US the day you get engaged to a US citizen or the day you get married.

But you still have to go through all the hoops and fill out all the paperwork anyway. No way around that. No matter who your grandmother is.

Now for the part that makes all of this even more complicated: COVID.

A lot of rules government-wide were relaxed because of the COVID national emergency. One of the areas in which a lot of rules, standards, and regulations were relaxed is immigration, which caused an enormous backlog of paperwork and cases. Why? Because we're the goverment, y'all, and we move at slower-than-glacial-pace. In March 2020, we still processed a million things by hand on actual physical paper. (Remember, I'm a fed. I've got horror stories for days about this.) So part of the issue with everyone going home is that the paperwork didn't come home with us. It just kept stacking up and stacking up and stacking up in the office because we were still using paper systems and there hadn't been enough time to automate processes or digitize systems when we were ordered to work from home on March 16th. (Particularly in the DC area, talks/plans to send us all home started literally the week before, on March 9th. That was zero time to do anything but scale up the VPN and give everyone a laptop so whole entire agencies can work from home - because remember, before March 2020, it wasn't a thing for us in government to work from home.) So in June/July 2020 when the local stay-at-home orders were finally lifted, we all went back to the office to huge backlogs of paperwork and casework. Backlogs that were still growing by the day, and backlogs that needed to be handled quickly. As a result, there were a lot of decisions made to just "rubber-stamp" everything as quickly as possible. In DHS/USCIS, that meant citizenship and visa applications weren't as closely reviewed as they may have been in the past because the bosses were telling us "just get it done" because the Trump Administration was breathing down everyone's necks to deliver results that they could use in his re-election campaign.

So there's speculation now that Harry's visa/immigration application is one of those cases that got "rubber stamped" to get through the backlog. And part of that speculation is an attempt to understand when exactly did the visa paperwork get processed and whether there was undue special treatment in doing so. Was he part of the backlog that was grandfathered/rubber-stamped into the US? Or was his application processed before that?

Because if his application was processed before he moved here in March 2020, well, then the Sussexes aren't telling the truth about where they lived or what they were doing. Reason being that typically on a spousal visa, you usually can't already be living here in the US when you apply for it. You apply from your home country and come to the US only once your visa request has been granted.

So did the Sussexes apply for Harry's visa when they were living in Canada, starting the process as early as November 2019 when the BRF forced them into a vacation and panicking in February 2020 when COVID started closing borders? In that case, did the Sussexes apply diplomatic pressure to expedite DHS's review of Harry's case so they could be in the US before borders closed? Or did they say "screw it" and moved to the US without waiting for a decision and then applied diplomatic pressure to have Harry's case approved retroactively?

Or did the Sussexes apply for Harry's visa much earlier, when they were still living in the UK/working as full-time royals? And if that's the case, then did they really go to Canada like they said they did, or did they just hide out in the US for a bit so Harry could pick up his green card, and then they traveled to Vancouver/Canada for New Year's?

Or - perhaps the more tinhatty scenario - did the Sussexes apply for Harry's visa right after the marriage, at the earliest opportunity Meghan could've filed the paperwork? In which case, their secret honeymoon could really potentially have been a trip to the US so Harry could claim his green card.

Option 3 is incredibly farfetched. We know the Sussexes can't keep their stories straight so I feel like if that's what had actually happened, there would've been holes poked into their "fleeing to Canada" narrative already.

I probably lean towards Option 1 (they exploited COVID to move here) but Option 2 is pretty plausible too.

Anyway, that's a ton more than you/anon probably expected. (It's a whole lot more than I expected to write about too.) But hopefully this clears up some confusion about what exactly is happening with Harry's immigration status, why it's possible he can still be deported, and sheds a little light on the Homeland Security lawsuit.

Will my novel still count as YA if both my main protagonists are 21 years old?

YA with 21-Year-Old Protagonists?

The short answer is: probably not.

The long answer is: It's complicated, and here's why...

"Young Adult" isn't a genre but an age category that was created by librarians in the 1960s to help teenage readers find books that served as a transition between children's literature and adult literature.

Today, YA is still an age category, but it's used to classify books that are specifically written with appeal to young adult readers. Which isn't to say older and younger readers can't read and appreciate them (they can and do... a 2012 study found that 55% of YA readers were adults), it's just that the publisher feels the book will appeal broadly to young adult readers.

There are two main criteria for a YA novel:

-- protagonist is typically between the ages of 14 and 18 -- protagonist broadly experiences "coming of age" issues

In order to qualify as YA, at least one of the above has to be true. However, someone above the age of 18 is unlikely to broadly experience young adult "coming of age" issues, so it's rare to see YA protagonists much older than 18.

Young adult "coming of age" issues are things like: first romantic relationships, growing apart from childhood peers, first forays into independence from family, struggling to fit in or fighting with individualism, first generation cultural conflict with immigrant parents, etc.

So, it's not that someone over the age of 18 can't experience any of those issues--many do--it's just that they're not usually going to experience them as broadly as the average 16-year-old.

Enter the "New Adult" age category, which is like YA but for readers and protagonists between the ages of 18 and 25. While there can be some overlap between the experiences of "young adults" and "new adults," most new adults have moved beyond the typical teen "coming of age" issues and are dealing more with things like preparing for life beyond high school and college, first long-term serious relationships, first foray into a career, living away from family for the first time, engagement and marriage, etc. NA romantic fiction tends to be spicier than YA romantic fiction, but it's by no means a requirement of NA--contrary to popular belief.

Adding to the complexity of the issue is YA genre fiction, which almost always features protagonists who should be older than 18 and were probably written as older than 18, and as such are dealing with more adult issues than their YA counterparts. Rather than dealing with things like first-love or going out for cheer leading, YA genre protagonists are usually taking down corrupt organizations in gritty far-future or alternate world cities, preparing for war on a planet populated with dragons, fighting in a deadly competition sponsored by a dystopian government, or rebelling against a villainous monarch in a fantasy world. There's sometimes a little overlap with YA issues like first love, fighting for individualism, first-time independence, but for the most part these characters are dealing with more adult issues and situations. Unfortunately, since traditional publishers have yet to embrace the New Adult age category, protagonists between the ages of 18 and 25 in genre fiction are often aged down to below 18, which is why we have YA novels where 16-year-old princesses in arranged marriages, 17-year-old war-grizzled space captains, and 18-year-old gang leaders with prolific spy networks and a reputation that strikes fear into the hearts of powerful people. It's a little silly, but here we are...

And then there's adult literary fiction, which is character-driven fiction that deeply explores the human condition in a way that emphasizes style over plot. Literary fiction sometimes includes young adult protagonists--and they sometimes deal with "coming of age" issues--but the story isn't really about that. Examples would be things like Life of Pi, The Kite Runner, The Bear and the Nightingale, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and The Catcher in the Rye.

So... in regard to your story... If your story is genre fiction--meaning it's plot-driven or plot and character-driven and fits into an obvious genre like science fiction or romance--and your 21-year old protagonists don't broadly experience "coming of age" issues, your book would just be categorized as mainstream genre fiction. If your story is genre fiction and your 21-year-old protagonists do broadly experience "coming of age" issues, it's possible your book would be categorized as YA, but it's far more likely you would be asked to age them down to 18 or younger. And if your story is character-driven fiction that deeply explores the human condition in a way that emphasizes style over plot, your story will probably be categorized as literary fiction.

The Venezuelan TikToker who went viral last month after defending illegal immigrant criminals and urging migrants to squat in U.S. homes is now on the run from immigration authorities, according to a new report.

Leonel Moreno has claimed that his family, which includes his wife and young daughter, has received $350 a week in government handouts since entering the U.S. illegally.

On top of that, he had claimed to be making $1,000 a day as a TikTok influencer. However, his account, which at one point had more than 500,000 followers, appeared inactive Wednesday morning.

His verified Instagram account, however, has about 17,000 followers and posted two videos Wednesday morning showing him waving a stack of $100 bills as he posed with his baby girl.

Moreno allegedly cut off his ankle monitor after receiving border parole and is now listed as an "absconder" from immigration authorities, the New York Post reported Wednesday, citing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) documents.

ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Moreno reportedly received border parole in April 2022 as part of the government's Alternatives to Detention program, which is supposed to track catch-and-release migrants when there is not enough room to detain them.

Moreno previously told his audience he planned to make a business out of "invading" abandoned houses and taking them over with squatters' rights laws, then selling them for a profit.

Although he has allegedly listed his immigration sponsor as a church charity in Miami, he has reportedly been living in Columbus, Ohio.

Moreno shocked the public last month when he bragged about living on the American taxpayers' dime and called on his TikTok followers to "unite" behind the suspect in a shooting in New York City's Times Square.

Illegal immigration from Venezuela has become increasingly visible as one of the country's most notorious gangs, Tren de Aragua, is also working to establish a foothold on U.S. soil.

The gang has been linked to an attack on police officers in New York City, an international cellphone robbery ring and, indirectly, the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.

The gang has a notable presence in New York City, Florida, Texas, Illinois and Georgia, authorities have warned.

Notes on Roman economics:

Rome, as a city, grew massively from 200 BCE to ~50 BCE, and most of this growth probably came from immigration (including slaves). The city's infrastructure struggled to keep up, and the inhabitants came to need more food than the rest of Italy could support.

Why so much growth? Part of it was people looking for work. The competitive building projects and public events of the elite created demand, more than anywhere else in Italy. Demand was further raised by the fact that Rome had outstripped its immediate natural resources, and thus needed more imports than most cities. Part of it was the slave trade and high manumission rate: captives brought back from wars, often freed later because keeping a slave was expensive. And part of it was imperialism: inhabitants of towns Rome had destroyed or impoverished would often move to Rome itself, looking for opportunities. Scholars, artisans, traders all gathered there, because Rome paid better and had more customers. In the 1st century, this may have also been increased by larger farms buying out smallholders. The money flowed one way, and people followed.

The number of poor and working-class inhabitants grew much faster than the aristocratic class, and overtook the traditional patron-client system, which had forged interclass alliances. But now, there were a lot more poor families who didn't have a patron to assist them in finding work, education, or food. And a lot of them, like Italians after the Social War, probably had well-founded resentment for how the city treated them.

This rapid growth may have made the collegia - those same groups mobilized by Clodius and Milo - both more powerful and more volatile. For immigrants who didn't already have a patron or nearby relatives, collegia provided community, professional connections, and a way to integrate into Rome. Not to mention you could take political action much more effectively as a group, and slaves and freedmen were welcome in most collegia, too. But from the aristocracy's perspective, these community networks were a threat. Even before Clodius organized mob violence, the collegia competed with the old patron-client system for gaining voters' support.

This aristocratic defensiveness may also explain some of the opposition to the grain dole: a state-sponsored public benefit competed with private nobles' ability to win support by handing out wealth. However, the aristocracy was too small as a class to effectively patronize Rome's poor on the same scale, and eventually ceded the issue for the sake of public order.

Extravagant public monuments, banquets, and gladiator shows served not only to get politicians prestige, but also recirculated money back into the middle and working classes. The Roman people were not simply fools who'd vote for whoever gave them a good show; politicians who were stingy could be seen as hoarding wealth and not serving the people. (This is also partly why identifying electoral bribery was so difficult - what counted as "bribery" vs. just "respecting the voters" was vague.)

(My comment - the patron-client system, monuments industry, and grain dole all seem to have acted as "vents." I think of a socioeconomic "vent" as a mechanism that grants limited benefit or opportunity to part of an underclass to induce them to cooperate with the system instead of reforming or overturning it. It prevents pressure from building up, promotes stability but not necessarily justice. There's probably a better word for this, maybe from Marxist theory? I don't know.)

Keep in mind that the issue wasn't immigration per se, or the "Roman mob" only caring about handouts or being easily fooled by demagogues. The Roman people - including non-citizens - had plenty of legitimate needs and grievances that were not being addressed by the upper class.

The rising population likely inspired the colonization projects of Gaius Gracchus and others, as a way to export people and try to relieve pressure on the capital.

A high population, underserved by infrastructure, alienated from the elites, and galvanized by grain shortages and rising inequality, probably contributed to the political violence of the late republic, and made the government as a whole far less stable.

Today my grandmother would have been 102. She was born in Düsseldorf, she was 16 when her parents sent her to London to work as a nanny to escape growing antisemetism in Germany. It was the compromise. Her mother was scared and wanted to leave, her father wanted to stay, he said “Germany is the most civilized country in the world, what could happen?” They both died in Aushwitz.

My grandmother had an uncle in the US who was able to sponsor her to join them in New York. In the US she met my Zeyda (my grandfather), a WWII camp liberator and the son of Russian Jewish immigrants who escaped the pogroms. I never knew her. She died of ovarian cancer decades before my parents even met.

From what my mother tells me she was a deeply traumatized woman and they seemed to have a complicated relationship. My mom says my grandmother couldn’t speak German, her first language, whether it was because she refused to or because she truly forgot I am unclear. My Zeyda remarried after she died, and his second wife was my Bubbe, and an incredible woman who loved me as if I was her blood. I love my Bubbe, but I have always had a yearning and sorrow that I never could meet my grandmother. This yearning is both specific to her and for what she represents, as a missing piece that would have been able to connect me to the knowledge of my extended Jewish family. All I have now are my mother’s vague half remembrances.

Although I never met her, her memory has been passed down and lives on through me, my siblings and my cousins. Her memory is and will continue to be a blessing.

“After two years as a refugee, my former student M. has received his U.S. resettlement paperwork and is ready to start his new life in America!

I taught M. when I worked at the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in Kabul. The eldest son of a large, loving, but poor family, he spent his earliest years in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Like many Afghan boys, he grew up working to help support his family. But thanks to his obvious intelligence and his family's commitment to education, he was able to attend school and pursue his bachelor's degree.

When Afghanistan fell to the Taliban in August 2021, M.'s family faced danger and persecution as a result of his father's work with the American military. They were eligible for U.S. Special Immigrant Visas, but the process was slow and almost nonfunctional. AUAF was able to evacuate M. to a third country where he could continue his education and wait for his refugee resettlement to the USA to be processed. While finishing his BA as a refugee, he was also supporting his family in Kabul and searching for ways to help them: pursuing their SIV application through the vast maze of American bureaucracy and working with my sister Heather, who filed to sponsor them for Humanitarian Parole.

Over the past two years, M. has become like a member of my family. He's helped my nephew with a school presentation; my niece baked him a cake to celebrate his university graduation. I've talked to his baby niece on the phone. He's helped me learn to read and write Dari Persian, putting up with my endless mistakes and questions. We text each other animal pictures and political frustrations.

Though M.'s family have now received their Humanitarian Parole and SIV petition approvals, they are still waiting for State Department evacuation from Kabul for their visa interview. But for M., good news has finally come: he has received his resettlement paperwork and is arriving in America the day before Thanksgiving!

He could use some help: when he was evacuated from Afghanistan, he was only allowed to take one bag of stuff with him. In America, he'll need more: weather-appropriate clothes, a phone, bus fare, and enough money to continue supporting his family in Kabul while he looks for a job.

This is an opportunity to help give a solid start to a gifted young man who has overcome incredible odds to make it this far— and to help repay an Afghan family who risked it all for America and American values.

Whatever you can give will help M. get started on his American journey!”
