A Bosnian genocide survivor on Israel’s siege on Gaza

"My initial reaction to seeing the destruction of Gaza — the videos of children being pulled out of rubble, the bodies of the dead — was that it reminded me so much of my own experience.

It was hard for me these past two weeks to go to sleep and sleep through the night. I would dream of Gaza. I would dream of Sarajevo, I would dream of Visegrad, I would dream of Srebrenica. I was seeing it all play out and it was terrifying. So my initial reaction was: Dear God, this is going to be a genocide.

We saw what happened on Oct. 7. The immediate reaction of Israeli politicians, government leaders and defense forces was to publicly and openly call for the destruction of Gaza. “We’re going to destroy them all.” “These are human animals.” “We’re cutting off food, electricity, water, aid.” That was the first red flag to me, when they said “we’re cutting everything off.” It instantly put me back to living in Sarajevo during the siege, when we were completely cut off from the world.

We had no way in or out. We were being bombarded every single day. There was not a day that they did not shell us, attack us with snipers, throwing grenades, bombs, whatever they could. There was not a single day where we were able to breathe. Knowing that the Palestinians in Gaza are going through this as well right now, it was difficult for me not to see those similarities instantly."

saw someone on twitter, whose family is in gaza, say the same thing: her sister told her that israelis are executing palestinian men and boys aged over 16, abducting them, forcing them to strip. these are displaced civilians and survivors. some people are defending the forceful stripping by saying that the purpose is to ensure there's no bomber vest/weapons which is ridiculous bec if that was the purpose, why are they taking pictures like trophies and circulating them online? why do they even suspect civilian men and boys trying to find safety with their families to be wearing a bomber vest? israelis have been releasing videos of stripping and beating palestinians since oct 7 - many of the palestinians victimized this way have been from the west bank. palestinians held in israeli jails are also stripped and beaten in a way that is hauntingly reminiscent of american crimes in abu ghraib prison in iraq.

Sorry, this will be my last post abt this, but the whole ordeal that's going on in the UN regarding Srebrenica rn triggered smth in me, so I just wanted to say one last thing.

Idk how familiar people are with Bosnia and Herzegovina or the genocide that happened here in the 90s, but I am glad they added this part into the news. While yes, there were UN forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina, they essentially didn't do much to protect civilians. One of the UN forces, the Dutch ones, basically gave away Srebrenica to the enemy troops because they were told by the enemies that they won't kill civilians. In the end, they did kill 8000+ unarmed men, boys, and a few babies, put them in mass graves, relocated them from one mass grave to another, and to this day, we are still searching for so many bodies. I am happy they pointed out that the UN was just here but never did anything. It took 4 years of pleading and begging and a genocide for the international stage to take action. It's really disgusting. Literally, the only place that somewhat mentioned Bosnia and publicly asked for prayers during the 90s was Catalonia... Catalonia isn't even a country.

Today marks 32 years since the beginning of the Bosnian war.

I’m gonna include links for information and resources in this post.

Thousands of innocent civilians, mostly Bosniaks would be slaughtered, raped and/or interned by Yugoslav army troops, Bosnian Serb fascist militias and foreign volunteer mercenaries (mostly Russian and Greek christofascist types).

This would lead to the Bosnian genocide which consisted of atrocities such as the Srebrenica massacre where 8,372 men and boys would be killed en masse.

Among many other atrocities (too many to list here)

Atrocities which continue to be defended and/or denied by politicians among the Serbian far right, Bosnian Serbs, and far right fascist monsters in Europe, America, Israel and other places.

Including British loyalists in my own country, lionising figures like Miloševic and calling for my own people to be slaughtered like the Bosniaks. (Ironic since the UK they claim loyalty contributed troops and resources to the NATO and UNPROFOR missions against such forces in Yugoslavia at the same time)

Defending or denying such atrocities saying “tHe SErbS wERe ONLy deFEndinG THEir hOMeLanD¡” (if I hear another kebab removal joke I will NOT hesitate to get violent). Lionising the perpetrators in the process. Even to this day.

The war would end in 1995 with the signing of the Dayton Agreement. Which has since led to a lasting but uneasy peace but denialism still continues.

Bosnian Serb lawmakers on Thursday (18 April) adopted a report denying that the killing of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica during the Bosnian war constituted genocide, and thousands of Serbs later protested against a United Nation’s resolution to commemorate the atrocity. The massacre in 1995, which happened in the week after the UN safe zone of Srebrenica was attacked by Bosnian Serb forces, was seen as Europe’s worst atrocity since World War Two, and international courts have ruled it constituted genocide. The parliamentary step came as Serbia and Bosnia’s autonomous Serb Republic campaign against a resolution to commemorate the Srebrenica genocide that is being debated in the United Nations and should be voted on in the General Assembly in early May. After the vote in the Serb Republic’s parliament, thousands of people from across the region joined a protest against the resolution organised by the ruling coalition in the Serb Republic’s de facto capital of Banja Luka. Milorad Dodik, the region´s nationalist president, said that the Bosnian Serb army operation in Srebrenica was a “big mistake”. “It was a crime but it was not a genocide,” Dodik told supporters who were applauding and waving Serb flags. He called on Muslim Bosniaks to pull back their support for the resolution, saying that otherwise the Serbs will not live with them in the same state.

There is a city that froze in the midst of summer. It has remained frozen ever since, stuck in time when they were promised safety, but instead were taken to their graves. The city is frozen, reliving the horrors of a newborns blood staining the earth, wind carrying the echoes of screams from chests and throats of grieving mother, wives, daughters, sisters still searching for the bones of her children, husbands, fathers, brothers...

Srebrenica remains frozen, coming alive every year only during the very days that had turned it into a mass grave, when more pieces of those who are lost forever are put to rest. Their loved ones remain haunted, taunted by the perpetrators who deny the genocide they've committed, who threaten to repeat it, who use it as a joke, as a way to inflict pain, even now, 28 years later.

8372 civilians were killed in a " UN safe zone". Every year, on July 11th, more of them are found and given a proper burial, most of them incomplete as the bodies were scattered, some after death while the mass graves were dug, others when they dug them up to move the bodies to hide their crimes.

So many are still missing, so many grieving families never found closure before they too passed. Remember what happened in Srebrenica, don't forget those of them out there who are still actively threatening to "finish the job".
