Heartbreaking thoughts about Tantai Jin hour. I'm just thinking about how the whole first timeline of the series, Tantai Jin had no idea that Li Susu and Ye Xiwu were two different people.

Literally, from his perspective, Ye Xiwu just started being nice to him out of the blue after months of physical and emotional abuse; whipping him every night, leaving him out in the cold essentially to die, and letting him almost starve.

Yet, after Li Susu transmigrated into her body, he still wholly and unabashedly fell in love with 'Ye Xiwu', opening his heart wide open to her and offering his entire self up to her. He loved her almost unconditionally; even when he thought LSS poisoned him, he forgave her the moment she came back. Even after LSS really did do the soul shattering nails, though he tried to hate her, it wasn't possible.

And I can't think of many other things that speak to the depth of his loneliness and need for affection than that, because it seems like he just went 'well she's different now' and didn't even bring it up. Like this man was abused to the point of near torture for MONTHS, by the real Ye Xiwu, but it was just 'in the past' for him. Maybe a part of him was going 'I've changed, so maybe YXW has as well', but the thing is that even when Li Sisu questioned his morality at points, he never retorted with 'remember what you used to do to me?' He wouldn't use the behavior of the real Ye Xiwu against her even when it was relevant. This poor man is so fucked up.

Because this wasn't like, an abusive relationship where the real Ye Xiwu was kind to him sometimes and interspersed it with cruelty, then Li Susu came along and turned to just kindness. It was a total personality switch. He never brought it up. He was that scared of not being loved. The level of pain, the level of desperation he must have been in to just go 'well it doesn't matter because she's nice to me now', and to go as far as to even see LSS as a light, a person he aspires to emulate and the moral center of his world, despite the real YXW's behavior, is immeasurable. It kills me.

One of the reasons I love immortal era of them the most is because he knows all of this now. He knows the woman he loved was NEVER Ye Xiwu, and I think it's really important for forming a genuinely healthy relationship between the two. I can imagine a weight he didn't even know was there just lifting off his chest the moment he realizes it's Li Susu he's loved all along, and how freeing that must have been (we sort of see this in the scene where he realizes it's not him she hated, but the devil god). As cute as they are in the Jing Kingdom arc, and yes they are so cute, the baggage is immense. They can only begin to drop that when all the truths come out between them.

To be honest I wish there was more leftist war and military sci-fi media outside of Star Wars (which fucking fell off and is pretty toothless politically nowadays outside of Andor which is based), Wolfenstein (Fell off), Gundam (which is still good) and Metal Gear Solid (Which is fucking dead. Like I get that war sucks and is no fun. I don't like seeing people suffering or in pain but I also possess the doublethink that war is necessary to end such things as fascism and genocide and these two opinions don't contradict. Sure wars suck but they are often necessary.

I want something about some random partisans on the eastern front assassinating a Nazi general or a Mil-SF about some soldiers stopping a fascist coup to their democracy. Stuff like that. Like Inglorious Bastards or Django Unchained for example. There's no "Both sides" or "War is hell" aspect to those. It's just wish fulfillment about how killing Nazis and Slave owners is good and it fucking works. Hell, the OG Indiana Jones films are a perfect example of this.

You ever seen this film, Sisu? It's about a random borderline immortal finnish guy wrecking an entire Nazi platoon out by himself and it's fucking great. It's what I am talking about. Like you know how Fascists and right wingers always latch onto the big bad empire in a lot of media because they just look way cooler than the good guys? After reading a lot of posts blaming Namaari for what happened to Sisu, I’ve decided to make my own post defending Namaari. Spoilers abound below.

Seriously... did we watch the same movie??? People act like Namaari murdered Sisu in cold blood, when actually she didn’t show any sign that she’d decided to kill Sisu. Her finger wasn’t even pulling on the trigger.

The truth is, Namaari was right when she told Raya that Raya was equally to blame for Sisu’s death. I couldn’t believe people were absolving Raya of any blame when Raya did the one thing you should never do when faced with an armed person aiming a weapon at an innocent person. You should never fucking attack the armed person, because it could lead to them accidentally shooting and injuring or killing the innocent person. And yet that’s what Raya did. Sure her intentions were good, but she still endangered Sisu’s life by doing what she did.

Note: Ten favorite monsters, part seven. Part six. To be clear, do to past confusion, these are not lists of monsters I’d bang. Adult-content creator =/= turned-on 24/7.  ._.  Sometimes I just like to talk about character design and review media I like.

I pretty much like every kind of dragon, from friendly to terrifying. If we’re going off of scary, my favorite’s maybe from The Mists of Avalon. A lot of my fave monsters are literary, but don’t have official art. :(

1. Cat in the Hat from The Cat in the Cat

The Cat in the Hat’s more enjoyable if you view it as demonic horror. There’s a lot of elements I like. Quirky architecture, jokes that go over kids’ heads, goofy magic companion, fun costumes. Yet it’s not a good movie, even by my standards. Audrey Geisel was so disgusted by it, any plans for future live-action adaptations of Theodor’s works were nixed.

I’m kind of glad TCITH was the bad live-action, early ‘00s Seuss movie instead of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Imagine how horrifying they could have made the Grinch.

2-4. “Girly girl” dragons

Barbie As Rapunzel: I have the Penelope plushie, whose design I actually prefer to the movie’s.

Dragon Tales: Before FIM Fluttershy, Cassie was THE shy pink and yellow creature. Dragon Land’s just one of various portal fantasy realms I wanted to visit so badly as a tot. Still do.  

Raya and the Last Dragon: People were way critical of Sisu’s design, calling it Elsa’s scalesona. Like Disney hasn’t reused/referenced old designs, jokingly or not. Not that their human(oid) designs are always unique… But Ghibli gets more leniency in that regard. (Haku’s a great dragon design, btw.)

5. the Moving Finger from Nightmares & Dreamscapes

Horror doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.

6. Jean Jacket from Nope

Take elements of UFOlogy, meteorology, marine biology, and animal exploitation, then produce the most terrifying movie monster ever.

7. Stuff from The Stuff

Metaphor for frozen yogurt? Diet food craze?

8. Scary Lion from The Teletubbies

A good example of how audio can determine whether something is cute or terrifying. 

9. Wild Things from Where the Wild Things Are

One elementary art class, we got to make our own chimeric Wild Things. Wish I knew where mine was. They’re grotesque, like to party, and actually pretty wholesome.

10. subway station from The Wiz

The Wiz is an interesting localization of The (Wonderful) Wizard of Oz. Garland!Dorothy is taken from Kansas to a mostly unfamiliar fantastical land. (I say “mostly,” because some of the Ozians have Kansan counterparts.) Ross!Dorothy is taken from NYC to fantastical NYC.

Originally, I considered using the book Kalidahs ‘cause I love mix-’n’-match critters. Then I watched this scene. That and the Munchkins coming out of graffiti like ghosts out of chalk outlines was oneiric as fuck. Anyway, the station isn’t just a liminal space, but another architectural monster. The train itself never appears, but we see trash bins and columns advance on Dorothy and co. There’s seemingly non-automated gates and prehensile electrical wires. Also, that peddler with his growing marionettes…

Note: The pic for “The Moving Finger” is actually from the show Monsters, but I only found out it was adapted after deciding to include it. Nightmares & Dreamscapes has one of my favorite covers, even if it’s deceptive. No scarecrow stories.

Unfortunately, the last gif can’t convey the awesome liminal horror that is the Ozified Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station. Fun fact, it was also used in The Warriors.

Good Things In 2023

It’s that time of year again! Time to remember all the good things that happened in 2023. I’ve done this since 2017, and highly recommend doing this as a fun way to reflect (and to have something for future reference when you are feeling Down.)

PERSONAL

I visited two countries I haven't been to before: the Netherlands and Iceland!

The Netherlands: mostly Amsterdam but did also pop down to The Hague for a day. Did the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the Bloemenmarkt, a canal boat tour, the Royal Palace, the Mauritshuis.

Iceland: I was there for less than 48 hours but I saw THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!!!! they were subtler than I expected but so cool. also did the Perlan Museum and a Lava Show, which ruled.

Related: I turned 30 this year!

My dear friend Sam came to visit me in Dublin in June! The highlight of her visit was going with her to see Hozier at Malahide Castle.

Speaking of which, Hozier dropped UNREAL UNEARTH which isn't personal, per se, but is very personal to me

My sister visited me in November! We squeezed a lot in her time here, but highlights were Glendalough, the Hill of Tara, and the Galway Christmas Market.

A few aunts went on a trip to Ireland this fall and I joined them for a bit up in Donegal, as well as a day trip to Derry, which I'd not been to before.

Completely fucking forgot about this but I did write a 158k word long ROGUE ONE / FRINGE AU, ENDLESS FORMS MOST BEAUTIFUL. it was a real fuckin bitch to finish, let me tell you that

I got really into MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE over the summer (don't ask) and wrote a couple short pieces inspired by the most recent movie, DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE: LADY LAZARUS and WORTHY THE NAME OF SIR KNIGHT.

I jumped back on my bullshit in October and wrote a long, extended epilogue to my BINARY STAR SYSTEMS trilogy: TWO DESERTS. the way the series ended was always correct and good but it was fun to write this extended epilogue focusing on the fallout, the question of what it's like to live past the end of your myth.

Anything bolded below is something I particularly enjoyed and recommend.

The New York Times had an interactive feature about Connie Chung and her impact on young Chinese-American women, particularly the ones named after her. I love this video of her meeting some of them.

"Will A.I. Become the New McKinsey?" by Ted Chiang for The New Yorker. Chiang is best known as the writer of STORY OF YOUR LIFE which was adapted into ARRIVAL, so it's wise to listen to him when it comes to tech and science.

Also don't forget that (according to a manuscript Saga can pick up) Ilmo was being tormented by the Dark Presence/Scratch's Story, and it was trying to twist him into becoming like Ilmari Huotari who killed his brother Jaakkoppi without remorse. It was only through sheer force of will (sisu as Alan puts it) and love for his brother that he was able to fight it off - all whilst smiling and acting like nothing was happening to him.

God I feel so fucking bad for Ilmo every time I think about his last appearance in game.

While the page speaks of one time, I wonder if he was plagued multiple times. I recently watched a playthrough where Charline said that Coffee World had become darker and her brother teased her if she was having 'nightmares again', making me wonder if others also experienced nightmares. Be it directly the DP trying to control them, or just its general influence on the area.

I can imagine that the nightmare fucked Ilmo up mentally.

😪Remedy did a great job with his character. On the surface, he and Jaakko are the comedic relief most of the time, just doing these funny silly commercials together but when you look deeper, they're so tragic 😭

Guide to getting into roller derby (uk edition)

I'm saying this is uk based because that's the experience I've had - I've played with two teams in the UK and been involved in derby since about 2019!

1. getting kitted up

derby kit is sooo fucking expensive. there are a lot of secondhand derby kit groups out there, though - uk people i can recommend the facebook group roller derby recyclables ♻️ !! facebook buy sell groups, facebook marketplace ads, and setting up ebay alerts will all help you out though. You will need to get a custom mouthguard - i recommend the SISU ones that are used by nearly all derby players - they are mountains more comfortable than most mouthguards. You'll probably want a pair of reidell r3s (THE starter derby skate) at some point but any pair of quad skates will get you started, so dont worry about this for now if you already have some. It's also worth contacting the derby team you're looking to join and asking if they have spare kit they loan out! Lots of groups do, and it can really help you out in the beginning.

2. being able to skate is an advantage, but not a necessity.

I came to derby from a rollerblading background - i'd been street skating and doing a bit of skatepark skating for about 5 years prior to starting derby. While quads and rollerblades are very different in terms of balance, they definitely have transferable skills and being able to stop, do little curb jumps, skate backwards (ish) etc on rollerblades set me up with enough basic skills to focus on really skilling up during rookie practice. Plenty of people do come to derby being unable to skate - but i would say you are more likely to have a good time and stick with it if you already know you can go and stop.

3. roller derby is dangerous and serious injuries are common

If you often write someone to be your emergency contact who you know isnt great at answering their phone, or you dont really know that well anymore, or doesn't know you play derby etc - DO NOT do that for roller derby - there is a very very real possibility of that person being called. If putting down a family member or partner isn't an option for you, nominate a friend or even a colleague or other trusted adult in your life.

Be very aware that you can be critically injured playing derby. If you rely on your physical fitness in order to do your job, if your physical health is already impaired due to a preexisting condition, or so on - i'm not saying you absolutely should not play derby, but it definitely requires some extra considerations.

4. Go to games

Find out about what teams are local to you and show up to games! Getting tickets to see your local roller derby teams is the best way you can support the sport, as well as pick up on how the game is played and learn some tips.

5. do you have a local group?

Especially in the uk, our derby groups got hit hard by covid and some have not survived. it's likely your nearest group is in your nearest major city - so depending on where you live that could be a long way away from you. Often groups are in leisure centers and sports halls out of town and not super accessible by public transport. Being able to drive is definitely an advantage.
