TLDR: platonic hubert edelgard fic that haunts me. It’s extremely good with really well written character voices and focuses on these two characters trying to find out who they are beyond the war with their friends refusing to leave them behind

Summary:

You can’t speak just yet to whether time—and age? experience? not that war or rulership have given you much of the latter, at least in the area of gardening—has made your thumbs any less brown, but the house in the Oghma Mountains is surrounded by so many growing things it hardly seems to matter. It sits at the edge of a forest, on the gentle lower slopes, and the people in the nearest town had all smiled to speak of it when they pointed the way for Hubert, the day you arrived. A number of them were old enough to remember what it had been like, years ago, in the warm and golden before, and to insist that it had not changed in the ways that mattered. It was still full of light. The air still smelled green.

In which Edelgard keeps a garden, Hubert learns to fly, and those they leave behind refuse to be left behind.

TLDR: platonic fic and amazing sylvain character study. Like genuinely one of the best i’ve ever read. If you’re someone who really wanted a deeper exploration of Sylvain’s feelings about Dimitri this fic is for u.

Summary:

When Sylvain is six and a half and climbs to the top of a tower with no one’s hand in his, he realizes that each and every one of the people he loves has been born as a gift to something else. Dimitri was born for Faerghus, and Felix was born for Dimitri. Glenn was born for the royal family, and Ingrid was born for Galatea and for Glenn. He realizes, too, that what they’re for decides their future. Dimitri will lead them into a better world. Felix will guide his path, and Glenn will protect his life, and Ingrid will bind her future to theirs.

And Sylvain, who was born for the border, will stand in a watchtower. He will see the enemy before it comes, and he will keep Dimitri and Felix and Ingrid and Glenn safe.

Dimitri reappears after five years. Sylvain knows it's his role to fix the mess they're in, but he doesn't know how.

TLDR: same author as before and just...god this fic is so good. a platonic exploration of the relationship between Claude and Cyril. This fic has it all: found brotherhood, worldbuilding about Almyra, Claude character study, CYRIL character study. it’s just fantastic

Summary:

Then the Alliance delegation shows up, and their offering strolls through the gates of the monastery like he already owns the place.

A reminder, for those who need it: Cyril is not an idiot. He has good eyes and he uses them.

An observation, for those who want it: The Golden Deer house leader is Almyran.

Cyril knows a lot more than he lets on, Claude is far less covert than he thinks he is, and messing with the guy your parents told you was a possibly-unkillable demon-prince isn’t usually supposed to earn you a lasting friendship but hey… life is already pretty damn weird.

TLDR: god this ferdibert fic just fucking...destroys me. i cannot get through it without crying at least twice and usually more. it’s basically a CF canon divergence with a heavy HEAVY exploration of ferdinand and hubert’s perspectives towards usefulness and how abelist thinking affects that in their efforts to find Shambala after Ferdinand loses his sight from one of Hubert’s experimental spells. All while falling in love. this fic is VERY fucking heavy, please mind the tags, it’s amazing but it’s subject matter is something you need to be very aware of. Also i would highly reccomend reading the prequel to this fic as it provides some critical context to Hubert’s actions that you don’t get through Ferdinand’s flawed pov. Basically this author is a master of character perspective.

TLDR: same author as before and god...just my FAVOURITE ferdinand character study. Takes place within the period Byleth is away. I don’t want to spoil anything but it’s incredible. Mines the fantastic character drama hook between Edelgard and Ferdinand that canon DIDNT rip

Summary:

Ferdinand was a general. In theory. Edelgard had promised him continued command of his battalion, and a general needed a certain measure of wealth to supply his horses, his servants, his armor and rations and lodgings and, she’d promised.

But his father sat rotting in a cell, or worse, and it could be nothing more than a fable they thought him simple enough to believe. What did promises matter?

When the house of Aegir collapses around him, Ferdinand struggles to forge a path forward. He quickly discovers he can't manage it alone -- and neither, perhaps, can Edelgard.

Ferdibert fic, a man loving his partner and trying to figure out the best way to support them as they silently wrestle with questions about their gender identity is something that can be so PERSONAL and make u CRY god. also dark flier hubert my beloved.

Summary:

Ferdinand notices things. He cannot say what he notices, precisely, because he has no one to ask, and if he were to ask Hubert it would damn well result in every questioned moment up and vanishing forever behind a new wall of prickly austerity. Ferdinand cannot risk that. The things that he notices stick in his chest, and he thinks only, but.

Hubert wrestles with unasked questions; Ferdinand wrestles with a pegasus.

“If you insist,” said Minister Vestra but he sounded pleased. To Delarivier, who had literally made it her profession to attune herself to his tone (usually ranging from sort-of-murder-y to extremely-murder-y), Minister Vestra sounded very pleased indeed.

Dimitri makes an affirmative noise. Then he takes a breath, voice leveling out into what Felix had long ago dubbed his 'future king voice', all steady explanation: “Long ago, the saying fledged right along with the nobles' and royal family's love of hawking, and it has remained a common phrase from one generation to the next. As adviser to the king, the duke is meant to be regal and strong, even deadly when required, from his place at the king's side. To always act as the most piercing, watchful eyes over the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and her sovereign."

He looks over to Felix as soon as his mouth snaps shut on the final word, as always seeking approval on his recitations.

Felix tilts his head, trying to look unimpressed. “I like eagles.”

A hand automatically comes up to cover the lower half of Dimitri's face, muffling the inarticulate sound of a snort of amusement. “That is good, since you are to be mine.”

VERY heavy character study and you NEED to mind both the general fic tags and the content warnings the author lists for each chapter but it’s incredible. Takes a very familiar trope and just. slams you in the face with over 60k words of amazing character study.

Summary:

“How are you going to get the One-Eyed Demon of Garreg Mach, the Boar Prince of Faerghus, smuggled past Dukedom soldiers? What plan could you possibly have to get a creature that incapable of even pretending it isn’t a bloodthirsty beast into Dominic without getting caught?”

The Professor gives him one of their steady, unreadable stares. They definitely do not and could not possibly have answered him, “You’re going to pretend to be married to him.”

The next day arrives and you’re rudely awakened by your alarm clock, basically yelling at you to get up and get your butt moving. Groaning, you shut off the alarm and quite literally roll off your bed with a thud.

You get up from the floor, abandoning your pile of blankets as you shuffle around your home doing your morning routine. Once done, you throw your blankets back onto your bed and grab your phone as you head out the door, lock it, and begin walking to work. To entertain yourself, you unlock your phone fully intent to play a phone game when you see messages from discord so you open that instead.

Cheesepuff: Good morning Fart. Or (Username) whichever you prefer. Whenever you have time, could we set up a time to introduce a few of my cousins to you and possibly the game itself.

Cheesepuff: Also, I may have given Blue your discord. So expect lots of messages.

Raising a brow, you check your friend requests and see that a “Magnificent Blueberry” asked to be friends. Huffing in amusement, you add him as friends and type out your reply to Carrot.

(Username): I get off work at 5:00. So we could get online at around 5:30. Can’t wait to meet your cousins!

You go to check other messages to see Totally not the writer left a message at 3 A.M. Not again…

Totally not the writer: So… I may have stayed up all night to think of how to use this meme so… you are my first test subject.

You snort at it and shake your head amused.

(Username): Get some sleep you ADHD nutshell.

Totally not the writer: Will do.

Shaking your head again, you pocket your phone and enter your workplace. A GAME STORE! :D You quickly make your way to the counter and greet your co-worker Chris.

“Sup dude,” They respond while you grab your employee clip on name and head to the back to restock shelves.

“You’re pretty peppy today,” They comment as you leave the back with a box of games, figurines, plushies, and other stuff.

“I’ve had a good morning so far!” You respond as you start stocking shelves, they hum and fiddle with their phone.

“Didja get the game you’ve been waiting all year for?” They ask.

“Yup! I even met some new people there!” They raise a brow as you move to another shelf.

“Really? From what I’ve heard they had a bit of a server problem so not that many people were able to get on,” So THAT’S what happened.

“Then I’m one of the lucky ones!” They were very amused.

“Seems like it. Care to tell me about these new friends you met?” You raise a brow and turn to Chris.

“But I didn’t-”

“Totally told me,” They cut you off, showing the screen of their phone in your direction. You lean forward to see that Totally did indeed contact Chris through discord.

“Of course they did,” You comment before going back to stocking the new PS4 games. The electronic bell sounds when some customers enter the store. You peek from the shelf to see four skeletons. 2 tall skeletons, one of them slightly taller than the other and two short skeletons, one with a large crack in his skull.

Hey, they look familiar-

“Welcome to the Game Store, if you need any help let me or the one stocking shelves over there know,” Chris says in the ‘customer is here, act like you’ve been happy all your life!’ voice. One of the taller skeletons smiled.

“THANK YOU KIND HUMAN! I WILL COME TO YOU FOR ASSISTANCE IF NEED BE!” He says enthusiastically and quite thankful. Both you and Chris' smiles softened into a bit more genuine smiles as the similar looking skeletons split up and began looking around the small store. You sigh softly as you go back to stocking shelves.

You soon finish the box and stand up to return the box and grab another one when someone taps your shoulder. You put on a smile and face a short skeleton in a blue hoodie.

“Oh hey! Need help looking for something?” You ask, the skeleton nods.

“Yeah, need help looking for a game called ‘Basic MMORPG VR edition,’” He says so casually you can’t help but relax around him.

“Oh yeah! I know where that is. Follow me please,” You say before walking toward the beloved game with the small skeleton in tow.

“Here it is!” You exclaim, making little jazz hands at the case making the skeleton snicker.

“Thanks bud. I guess you could say you were... playing your role?”

Processing…

“PFT-” You burst out laughing. You could even hear Chris and a very deep voice snicker in the background.

“Oh my GOD that was terrible,” You say collecting yourself, the short skeleton shrugged.

“But I guess I don’t have enough EXP(erience) with good jokes!” You fire back and his eyelights twinkled.

“Guess you’ll have to farm for some,” The same deep voice from earlier said, earning a snicker from you and the short skeleton by you.

“SANS PLEASE!” You hear an exasperated voice yell.

“Brother No…” Another voice chimes, somewhat similar to the first but somewhat softer. The short skeleton used blue magic to get the game and walked over to the counter still snickering. You smile as you begin walking to the back to replace your empty box. When you return to the store, all the skeletons are at the counter with one of the tall ones yelling.

“PLEASE FORGIVE MY BROTHER AND MY COUSIN FOR THEIR TERRIBLE PUNS!” The other tall one nods.

“It’s alright, did you find everything you needed?” Chris says as you go to stock the shelves once again. Just as you were finishing up with this box, the skeletons had paid for their games and left.

“That was… interesting,” Chris comments as you go to the back to get ANOTHER box.

“You’re telling me! They look like the avatars Carrot and Blue use!” Chris furrows their brows as you leave with another box and go to the shelves again.

“Isn’t… there custom avatars in Basic?” Chris asks as they type away on their phone.

“Um… Not that I can recall… considering the list is SUUUUPER long,” You respond as Chris nods their head.

“There is, just looked it up. Isn’t it strange that they looked practically identical except for some slight changes?” Chris asks, looking up from their phone. Now that you think about it…

“Yeah, that’s kinda odd…” You comment aloud as you toss the last box into the back.

“Maybe they were all born as twins or something?” You suggest, Chris shakes their head.

“I dunno… oh hey, it’s break time. Want a rematch in SMASH?”

“OH HELL YEAH, I’M GONNA WIN THIS TIME!” Chris laughs at your enthusiasm as you both make your way to the employee break room, passing by Max and Alex, your other co-workers who you say ‘hi’ to. You and Chris began to duke it out in Smash.

The rest of the day went by quickly, only a few customers stopped by the Game Store, you lost to Chris is Smash… again. At the end of your shift you say goodbye to Chris and leave the store. While walking home, you check your messages and see that Blue and Carrot messaged.

Magnificent Blueberry: HELLO HUMAN FART! I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL! UNFORTUNATELY, I AM UNABLE TO JOIN YOU AND MY BROTHER’S GAMING SESSION SINCE I HAVE IMPORTANT THINGS TO ATTEND TO! I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE FUN! - SINCERELY, BLUE!

You smiled at how professional yet caring Blue’s message was and began typing your response.

(Username): Aw man! I hope you can join us next time! Good luck with your important things!

You go to Carrot’s message next.

Cheesepuff: Okay, so the server’s are REALLY crowded today. I think we should set up a place to meet up as well.

(Username): That’s alright! How about the Creature Care Center?

Cheesepuff: That works. See ya in 15.

You leave the personal conversations to see you were added to a group chat with Totally and Crispy Chris (You may have laughed at Chris’s username as soon as you saw it.)

Totally not the writer: Right, so I made this group chat so we could play games and just chat with one another.

Crispy Chris: Cool.

(Username): Awesome! But I’m busy tonight, I’m going to be meeting Carrot’s cousins in game.

Totally not the writer: There’s more of them? Didn’t you and Chris just deal with two sets of doppelgangers that YOU said looked like Carrot’s and Blue’s avatars?

Ah, Chris must’ve told them about that.

(Username): Maybe, maybe not. I may be meeting those doppelgangers. Who knows?

Crispy Chris: Just don’t reveal your address or your full name. Or, like, any personal information that’ll hurt you.

(Username): I know, I know. This isn’t my first rodeo. Gtg tho.

You shut off your phone and stuff in your pocket as you enter the home. Locking the door behind you, you check the clock. 5:15. Nodding to yourself, you begin setting up the game and once done with that, you put on the VR goggles and enter the Basic world.

When Carrot said it was crowded today, he was not kidding. There were a LOT of players in just the town square alone! Wincing to yourself, you pull up a map (Blue was kind enough to give you pointers with your exploration) and begin weaving your way through avatars and houses.

You eventually arrive on the street where the Creature Care Center, Merchant Stalls and many other interactive buildings lie. You look up from the map to see Carrot pacing back and forth in front of two sets of, you guessed, more doppelgangers. And they sure as hell didn’t look like the ones that visited the store, but they were similar. They looked terrifying, wearing red, black, or purple armor/robes/clothing.

You gulp and make the map disappear before approaching the group of skeletons. Carrot notices your approach and waves with a small smile.

“Hey, glad you could make it,” He says, earning an annoyed huff from a tall skeleton in red armor.

“FINALLY, I COULDN’T STAND WAITING ANY LONGER,” The short skeleton wearing purple armor nodded. Carrot sighed.

“Edge, Mal, please…” He muttered tiredly, you raised a brow and looked at the usernames above their avatars. The tall angry one in red was “Captain,” the short one in purple was “Maleficent,” the short one in red clothes with a hood was “Red,” and finally the tallone in dark purple robes was “Rus.”

“Interesting names,” You comment, Captain puffing out his chest and smiling proudly.

“OF COURSE IT IS! YOU’VE WITNESSED THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE EDGE AND HIS MAGNIFICENT NAMING SKILLS!” He states proudly, so he’s a narcissist. Good to know. Maleficent shakes his head with his arms crossed.

“BY ‘MAGNIFICENT’ YOU MEAN BASIC, CONSIDERING YOU WERE THE CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD,” Maleficent counters bluntly, Captain whips his head to face the short.

“WH- HOW DARE YOU?!” He screeched before the two got into an argument, the other two were snickering about something and Carrot looked dead inside. You place a virtual hand onto his shoulder.

“I am sorry you have to deal with this,” You say half serious half joking, earning a tired amused grin from Carrot.

“Trust me, it was harder to convince them to actually PLAY the game,” Carrot admits looking even more dead inside. Red approaches the two of you.

“He’ll get used to it, eventually,” Red comments before holding out his hand.

“Nice to officially meet you Fart, my name is Red,” He says with an amused smile. You shake his hand which opens a menu with his stats.

“Woah, a rouge! Nice,” You complement, Red smirks more.

“Thanks,” He says simply before you break apart the virtual handshake. Rus approaches the small gathering.

“Can I join the party?” He asks, holy shit his voice- Red starts snickering like a mad man while Carrot stares at you in disbelief. Rus blinks and looks away.

“Um… thank you?” He says with uncertainty and a tinge of amusement, CRAP YOU SAID THAT OUT LOUD! Red starts laughing harder and Rus chuckles.

“You’re something else aren’t ya?” He asks with a smirk.

“Uh…” You intelligently reply, Carrot steps in.

“Okay, I think they need a bit to process everything,” You nod trying to unclog your brain to find words. Red finally calmed down and wrapped a virtual arm around your avatar’s neck.

“You’re a riot, Fart!” He exclaims, you smile.

“Th-Thank you,” You manage to respond before Captain's booming voice breaks the chill environment.

“CAN WE GET A MOVE ON?! I WANT TO BE DONE WITH THIS AND DO SOMETHING MORE PRODUCTIVE!” Confused, you give Carrot a raised brow.

“He wanted to know what there is to this game so… another exploration adventure. Whooooo,” He says tiredly, jeez, he needs to sleep.

“INDEED. NOW QUIT YOUR LOLLYGAGGING AND LET’S GO,” Maleficent follows up, you swear, whenever those two talk, you feel like you’re losing brain cells. And off your party went to look around the areas Captain and Maleficent were interested in. And once they found a weapon stand, they were VERY dedicated to look for their perfect weapon so the rest of you went to the fields.

Carrot collected herbs while Ruse tried to get a fox as his familiar which was pretty cute. You were slaying slimes and Red was practicing his aim with the bow. After slaying some slimes, you decided to join Red with practicing your aim. You stand by him and use your multiweapon to practice.

“Hey Fart,” He greets as he shoots an arrow into a tree.

“Hey,” You respond, shooting and missing the tree.

“How are you liking Basic so far?” You ask as Red shoots and hits the tree again.

“It’s alright,” He answers vaguely as he glances at you and does a double take.

“Woah, what the HELL are you holding?” Red asks genuinely curious, you show Red your multiweapon.

“Multiweapon, I… couldn’t decide on just one,” You admit, Red snorts.

“Yeah, I can tell. But it’s still impressive. Think there are anymore like this in Basic?” He asks, now that you think about it, there is weapon customization in this…

“Most likely but they’d probably use different weapons,” Red hums and you both fall into comfortable silence while continuing to practice your aims.

“How did you get into gaming?” Red asks suddenly, oh boy. He just set off a tidal wave. You tell him how and why you got into gaming and he listened intently, even telling YOU how he got into gaming. Then it moved to conversing about video games which you both were REALLY into.

“I shall name you… Butters,” Rus declares as he holds the golden fox in his hands. The fox yips and Rus aww’s from the fox.

“Butters huh? Neat name,” Stretch comments as he walks by Rus to pick some herbs.

“Thanks,” They fall into silence before Rus breaks it again.

“Hey, I know you introduced us to this game to socialize but… don’t you find the human a bit TO accepting?” Stretch mulls over the question and faces Rus.

“Well, to them they think we’re using avatars so there’s that,” Rus hums and pets Butters.

“True, should we go get Edge and Mal?” Rus asks.

“Nah, they’ll be fine. Besides, they can find us with the friend tracking system, remember?” Rus shakes his head.

“There’s so many features to keep track of…” Rus mutters, earning an amused smirk from Stretch.

“Eh, you get used to it. Eventually,”

Hours went by and before you knew it, you had to log off. You got Red’s discord and planned to have a Smash match one day. While the others were interesting, they didn’t seem too keen to give you their discord just yet. Understandable, after all they just met.

As you wind down for the night, you check your messages to see Red, Blue, Carrot and Chris messaged you.

Red: Can’t wait to kick your ass in Smash, when you have time that is.

(Username): Oh, you’re on hot topic! Saturday, noon.

Red: Deal. See ya then sweetheart. ;)

Your face totally didn’t erupt into a tomato, nooooo.

Magnificent Blueberry: I HOPE YOU HAD A WONDERFUL DAY FART! AND THANK YOU For YOUR LUCK EARLIER, IT REALLY HELPED! HAVE A GOOD NIGHT FART! -ALL THE BEST, BLUE!

You couldn’t help but chuckle that Blue still used Fart. You send a quick “I did, thank you and goodnight!” Now onto Carrot.

“Dude, what are we doing here?” Ashton asked as Calum pulled up in front of an animal shelter.

“You said you wanted my opinion on what you should get Sam, didn’t you?” Calum asked, putting the car in park.

“I didn’t mean a pet, Cal!”

“Look, mate,” Calum said, turning in his seat to look over at his best friend. “Sam and I have been coming to this shelter once a month to volunteer. There’s a dog that came in… I’m gonna say seven or so months ago. Blue. She’s a sweet lil thing. Sam loves her.”

“Well yeah. Sam loves dogs. Her family had their dog, Roe, since Sam was a little kid.”

“She loves this dog as much as Roe. And Blue loves her too. Honestly, Ash, if it wasn’t for Duke, I’d adopt Blue myself for Sam.”

Ashton sighed, rubbing out his face. “Wasn’t really thinking of getting her a dog for Christmas, mate.”

“What were you thinking?”

“This?” Ashton pulled a small box out his pocket and snapped it open.

Calum whistled as he looked at the ring. “Damn, mate. Serious, huh?”

“As a heart attack,” Ashton nodded, a slow grin spreading across his face. “Think she’ll like it?”

“Better ask me to be your best man before she asks me to be the man of honor.”

“Was thinking you could officiate, actually?”

Calum reached over and clapped a hand on Ashton’s shoulder. “Marrying my best friends? Couldn’t think of anything else I’d rather do.”

“Thanks, Cal,” Ashton said, swallowing thickly. It meant more to him than he had words for that the man across from him had accepted Sam the way he did. It almost felt like it was a different lifetime when Calum had screamed at him that Sam wouldn’t matter in a few months. He sniffed and looked out across the parking lot to the shelter. He chuckled, shaking his head. “Can I leave Blue at your house for a few days?”

“Yes!” Calum cheered, pumping his fist in the air in victory.

“Wait, where’s Blue?” Sam asked, stopping in front of what used to be Blue’s cage and seeing another dog in its place.

Calum shot the worker a glare that dared them to spoil the surprise. “Someone came in a few days ago and adopted her,” the worker gave forth the simplest truth.

Sam sighed, her heart breaking. “I swear if they bring her back after the holidays, I’m gonna be so pissed.”

“Oh, I don’t think that’ll happen,” the worker smiled.

Somehow, that made Sam feel worse. While she had hated seeing Blue in her cage, week after week, and really hoped she had gone to a good home, she had also become attached to Blue. And the thought of never seeing that happy little pitbull had her weeping into Calum’s arms. “Shh, it’s okay, princess. I’m sure Blue went to a good home. She’s probably really happy.”

“But what if they’re mean to her? What if they bring her back? Or worse! What if they love her, and I never see her again?!” she wailed, clutching the bone wrapped in a red ribbon she had brought for her precious pup that she would never get to give her.

“Sam, it’ll be okay,” Calum continued to soothe, rubbing her back. “C’mon, how about I take you back home? Everyone should be over now, so we can all open our presents, and then we can make a fort, and make fun of Luke. Huh? How’s that sound?”

“Okay,” Sam sniffed into his shirt. “Here,” she told the worker, pulling a box of dog bones out of her purse. “These are for all the other dogs.” She gave the box to the worker then turned back to Calum. “I guess Duke can have the bone.”

“I’m sure he’ll love it,” Calum smiled at her, trying to keep his excitement to a minimum so he didn’t spoil the surprise. “C’mon, let’s get you home.”

“Fletch, we- BLUE!” Sam’s greeting turned into a shriek of glee as the black and white pitbull came barreling out of the kitchen at full speed. “What are you doing here, baby?!” She was seated on the floor now while the dog pounced all over her, covering her in happy kisses, Sam’s laughter echoing around the house.

Ashton giggled as he leaned in the archway between the kitchen and living room. “Think she liked her gift, Cal?”

Calum laughed with him, “Oh, yeah. Told ya she would.”

Sam gasped up at the men, reaching out a hand to slap Calum’s leg. “You little!” she continued to gasp. “You knew she was here the whole time?!”

“Cal’s the reason I got her, baby,” Ashton admitted. “Originally I was going to get you something else.”

“Oooo!” Sam’s blue eyes went wide at the idea of another gift. “What were you gonna get me?!”

“Check her collar,” Ashton nodded at Blue, swallowing thickly.

When Sam busied herself with checking Blue’s collar, Ashton sunk silently to his knee behind her and Calum started filming. “Oh!” Sam breathed, her eyes taking in the ring next to Blue’s dog tag. She quickly freed the ring, taking it in the palm of her hand. “Oh, Fletch,” she said, softly, spinning herself around to look at him. Her eyes went wide when she realized he was more or less crouched down next to her, his hazel eyes equally wide and full of hope and love.

With a shaky hand, he took the ring out of her hand. “Samantha Hudson, you have made me happier than I thought possible. Not only have you accepted my world with grace, you’ve woven yourself into it in a way I hope time never undoes. Will you marry me?”

Sam answered by flinging her arms around Ashton’s neck with such force that it knocked him on his back, his arms wrapping around her waist as tears spilled down both their cheeks.

“So I wanted to ask you guys something,” Ashton started, twiddling nervously with his hands. “Um, you guys already know I asked my little brother to be my best man because Cal’s officiating for us. Not that I would’ve been able to choose between any of you three to be my best man anyway because…” Ashton paused to clear his throat, feeling his eyes water up. “Fuck… um, anyway, I wanted to ask if you guys would be my groomsmen.”

Luke and Mike looked at each other. Their silence made Ashton almost, if not more nervous than trying to ask the question in the first place. “Mate,” Luke finally spoke up, rubbing at his neck.

“It’s not that we’re saying no…” Mike joined.

Ashton stopped breathing.

“Because we’re honored, Ash!” Luke rushed.

“Yeah! I mean, I asked you to be my groomsman back when I married Crystal, so like I’m definitely excited to return the favor. It’s just…”

“We thought Sam was gonna ask us to be her bridesmaids,” Luke concluded.

“You what?” Ashton blinked in stunned confusion.

“You’re not mad are ya, mate?”

“Nah, he’s sad. Look at him, he’s about to cry. Ash, no! It’s not that we don’t want to!”

“I’m not crying cuz you said no!” Ashton sniffed, rubbing his hand hastily at his face. “Fuck, you guys really like her, huh?”

“She’s family, mate.”

“So… do you think she’s gonna ask us to be her bridesmaids?”

Ashton chuckled, smacking both men on their arms. “Fuck off. Seriously, what do you say?”

“If Sam plans to ask us, then no. If not, of course we’ll be your groomsmen.”

“She was planning on asking Crystal and Sierra to be her bridesmaids.”

“What if we’re Sam’s bridesmaids, and the girls are your groomsmen?” Mike threw out the idea.

Ashton pulled a face as he thought it over. “You know… that’s not half bad…”

“What’s not half bad?” Sam asked, taking them all by surprise. She had her hand up against the wall as she balanced to take off her heels, purse slipping down her arm, car keys still dangling in her hand.

“Hey, baby. How was work?”

“Same old, same old. Did they say yes?” She nodded her chin at Luke and Mike as she walked over to them, taking a seat besides Ashton.

“No,” Ashton admitted, taking her hand in his and smiling fondly at her. “My best friends, my brothers, told me no,” he laughed.

Sam frowned, turning her attention to the blondes. “You fuckers told him no?! Oh, this better be good…” Her tongue clicked in her cheek as she crossed her arms, waiting for an answer, while Ashton continued to giggle beside her. “What in the world is so funny about them telling you no?”

“Tell her!” Ashton got out between giggles.

“We only told him no because we thought you were gonna ask us to be your bridesmaids,” Luke fessed up, absentmindedly twirling a blonde curl around his finger.

“Yeah,” Mike nodded. “And then I thought that we could be your bridesmaids, and Crystal and Sierra could be his groomsmen.”

Sam arched an eyebrow, not sure she had heard correctly. “You told Fletch no. A guy who’s like an older brother to you. And you told him no, because you thought I was going to ask you to be my bridesmaids. I’ve known you guys for like half the time you’ve known him! What are you thinking?!”

“We were thinking you’d be excited to ask us to be your bridesmaids…” was the hurt reply.

Sam looked over at Ashton for help. “I… they’re your boys, Fletch. What am I supposed to do here?”

Ashton pressed his lips quickly to hers. “They’re your boys, too. So what do you say? Should we shake up some social standards? I get groomswomen and you get bridesmen?”

Sam looked at Ashton carefully, much like she had in the past before her first “dates” with his friends. Again, she felt like the stakes were being raised, and she didn’t want Ashton to feel even the slightest tinge of feeling like he was being pushed aside by people who were his family long before they were hers. “You are absolutely sure this is what you want?”

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my whole life.”

My Ultimate Reading List v2.0 Fics

A/N: As some of you have heard or seen, My Ultimate Reading List (in it’s original version) has crashed on desktop because of (as I realised trying to restore it) too big number of links, so I’m basically recreating the whole thing in a new format. This post goes for One Shots and Serieses. There’s one more post for Blurbs. I’m really sorry for the tag notifs for the people who has been tagged already in a previous version. Hope it’s not much of an inconvenience. I’m also not going to delete the first version of the list, as it’s been liked and reposted a lot of times, it’s still working on mobile, so some might still use it. But all the updates are going to happen only on this post, which I’m going to put in my bio instead of an old one.

So, this list was created because of my crazy urge to reread favourite fics and blurbs from time to time. It was made purely for me, but if it helps you to find a fic or a writer you’d love, I’d be only happy. I tried to make navigation easy. For blurbs links go to my reblogs, for oneshots and full lengths links go to the original posts. I try to check links from time to time, but if you see that some of them don’t work, please, hmu.

So, I hear you liked TURN.

Apres the Season 4 finale, I know there’s going to be a lot of crying, and hand-wringing, and rewatching, and these are all good and proper things to do in the wake of a TV show you’ve enjoyed.

But after the smoke clears from all of that, you’re maybe going to go looking for your next 18th century fix, just something in between rewatches or while you’re trying to flesh out your next story idea. (Hey, now that we have our canon, go hog-wild on story ideas, guys, seriously.)

So I’ve saved you some trouble and made you all a helpful list.

Obviously there are a lot of movies and TV shows out there - this is just a selection that I wish more people knew about.

Note: Everyone enjoys a show or movie for different reasons. These shows are on this list because of the time period they depict, not because of the quality of their writing, the accuracy of their history or the political nature of their content. Where I’m able to, I’ve mentioned if a book is available if you’d like to read more.

Before we get to the rest of the list, there are three excellent shows that are either currently on television or about to be very soon:

Poldark (BBC/PBS) is based on a series of books by an author named Winston Graham. It was made into a PBS series in the 70s starring Robin Ellis as the handsome Captain Poldark, who returns from the American Revolution to find his family farm in tatters and his long-time love interest married to his cousin. Drama ensues. The 70s series is worth your time, and the recent remake with Aidan Turner in the title role is also definitely worth a go. (If you like leading men who make terrible life decisions and the women who put up with them, this is totally your show.)

Harlots (Hulu) - If you really loved the TURN ladies, thought Lola and Philomena deserved more than they got, or are just interested to learn more about what life might have been like for the lower classes in London in the 1750s, have we got a deal for you. Harlots follows the lives of 18th century sex workers in this new drama, which was just recently renewed for a totally deserved second season. Female-lead ensemble drama. A little violent at points and deals with some pretty heavy-duty topics like rape, murder, and bastardy, but in a humane and understanding way. Totally bingeable.

Outlander (Starz) - Based on the wildly popular series of books by Diana Gabaldon, this time traveling drama jumps between a couple of different centuries and follows the story of Jamie and Claire, two very strong personalities trying to literally find their place in history. (Hewlett talks about the blade his grandfather picked up at Culloden; that battle forms a critical part of this show’s storyline.) It’s a real pretty show with very high production values.

And, without further ado, the rest of the list!

John Adams: If you haven’t watched this already, do yourself a favor and go pick it up from the library. Starring Paul Giametti in the title role, this HBO miniseries follows John Adams’ role in the formation of America, through his early days in Congress up through his own presidency. As with any biographical show, characters that we know and love from other media (Rufus Sewell’s Hamilton comes to mind, but see what you think of David Morse’s Washington, too) are presented in a slightly different light and provide some food for thought about how history can be selective in how it remembers us. The costuming is great, the sets are fantastic, and the acting is first-rate.

The Patriot: An oldie but a goodie. Mel Gibson plays a highly fictionalized version of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox while Jason Isaacs turns in a really stellar hottie we love to hate in Colonel Tavington. A little heavy-handed at times, this is a good movie to laugh over with friends.

Sons of Liberty: I’ll be really honest - for a show from the History Channel, the history on this show is pretty awful. But the cast is pretty. This one’s up to you, really. It fills a hole.

Garrow’s Law: William Garrow was a barrister and a pioneering legal mind in the 18th century, and this show (which ran for 3 seasons) is based on real Old Bailey cases and Garrow’s defenses, while also working in his fraught social life. Were you interested in learning a little more about Abe Woodhull’s erstwhile legal training? This is the show for you.

City of Vice: A miniseries that explains the origins and work of the Bow Street Runners, one of London’s first police forces. Does a great job of opening up some of the early 18th century underside of London including a smidge of 18th century gay culture.

A Harlot’s Progress: William Hogarth was an 18th century artist, printmaker and social commentator whose “A Harlot’s Progress” famously depicts the downfall of a woman who goes into prostitution. This 2006 series explores the relationship that inspired the ‘Harlot’ piece.

The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant: At around the same time America was busy trying to figure itself out, halfway around the world another one of Britain’s colonial possessions - Australia - was just getting started. Hundreds of convicts found themselves stuffed in ships and sent to the other side of the world - a sentence deemed almost more humane. This 2005 series with Romala Garai follows a very famous convict, Mary Bryant, and her experiences.

Banished: Another take on penal colonies in Australia. Currently available on Hulu.

Black Sails: A more recent offering from Starz, this show explores the backstory of the pirates in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Lots of great representation issues, a whole lot of ‘how does your story get told’ - and there’s a real big community on Tumblr who loves it and very actively produces all kinds of fic.

Clarissa - Simcoe fans, this one is totally for you. Based on the epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson, Clarissa follows a girl of the same name as the infamous rake Lovelace tries to seduce her. Another look at what how women can be corrupted. Also, for you fandom nerds in the crowd, Lovelace was one of the first characters to inspire fix-it fic. Yes, really! Fix-it fic in the late 1700s. Lovelace is one of the original men for whom the ‘No, really, I can reform him’ trope was created. (Richardson, his creator, was so horrified by this reaction by his fans that he actually revised the book several times to try and make Lovelace even more villainous and irredeemable, with little success. Then as now, women apparently love the idea of a bad boy.)

Amazing Grace - The history of slavery in England and its colonies is complicated and nuanced; this story deals with one of the more famous names from that story, William Wilberforce, and his contribution.

Belle - Based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Another look at racial politics in England.

The Aristocrats - One of my all-time favorite TV miniseries and based on the nonfiction book by Stella Tilyard, this show follows the (actual, nonfictional) Lennox sisters, daughters of the Duke of Richmond as they grow up, marry, and adjust to rapid social change from the early 1700s into the 1790s.

The Duchess - About the same time the Lennox sisters were out in society, so was Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. This is based on (I’m not sure how closely) Amanda Foreman’s biography of Georgiana, one of the leading ladies of her day.

Dangerous Liasons - Another story about corruptible young women, this one has 3 very well deserved Oscars to its name and an absolutely stunning Glenn Close.

Barry Lyndon - a very evocative, sumptuous film by Stanley Kubrick. Short on action, but very, very Aesthetic, as only Kubrick can do.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Based on the book by Baroness Orczy, The Scarlet Pimpernel is largely considered to be one of the world’s first ‘superhero with a secret identity’ stories. Sir Percy Blakeney uses his identity as a dim-witted fop to provide cover for his activities rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution. The 1982 version with Anthony Andrews and the 1999 version with Richard Grant are both a lot of fun.

Speaking of the French, where would we be without them? Our small domestic dust-up with Britain has far-reaching international consequences, setting in motion so many other social movements in Europe. The French, for instance, will have their own revolution several years after ours, which, of course, will lead to a total political shakeup ending with an artillery officer named Napoleon Bonaparte on the throne as Emperor. (You may have heard of him. He goes on to have his own series of large wars and, you know, completely changes the geo-political landscape of Europe. Like you do.)

La Revolution Francaise, filmed for the 200th anniversary of the Revolution, is available on YouTube in it’s entirety with English subtitles! Starts in 1774 and goes through the 1800s. C’est merveilleux.

Marie Antoinette - Sofia Coppola’s wild, modern romp through the life of one of the 18th century’s most notorious women. It may not be great history, but darn me if it isn’t fun to watch.

Farewell, My Queen - Another story about Marie Antoinette - this one is in French.

Nicolas Le Floch: An 18th century crime procedural set at the court of Louis XVI. The whole show is in French, so watch with subtitles, but the costumes are a lot of fun and it gives an interesting picture of the life a character like Lafayette would have left behind when he came to America. (He gets name dropped a few times, actually, though he never actually appears.)

Ekaterina: A 2014 miniseries from Russia discussing the rise of Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, contemporaneous to the Revolution. The 18th century is a fascinating time in Russian history and Catherine is a really, really interesting lady. Totally go and read about her.

Anno 1790: A Swedish crime procedural set in 1790s Sweden and following Johann Däadh, a doctor recently roped into the police force. Däadh is a bit of a reformer, interested in the rights of man and giving everyone a chance to be heard. Costumes are fun, and there’s a really great slow-burn romance between two of the characters, one of whom is (gasp) married. This show only ran for one season, but it was a really, really good season.

If you’re still jonesing for period dramas after the rest of this list, here’s a lot of shows and tv series set during the Napoleonic Wars that are also totally worth your time - the Richard Sharpe miniseries, the Horatio Hornblower miniseries, the BBC’s War and Peace, Master and Commander, and then, of course, anything based on a Jane Austen novel.

Hmmmmm that’s kind of hard to call, I reckon. I guess.... probably?

I think my answer would depend pretty heavily on whether Jason’s life gets any better or not-- specifically his mental health-- and I don’t know if that’s going to be the case. It would happen if I was in charge of things, but regrettably I am not.

Things as they are, Jason’s association with Bruce has been pretty terrible for him. The death/resurrection thing was traumatic on both ends, and then you got his estrangement from his family, all of the stuff with the League of Assassins, and now he’s killed a lot of people.

If Bruce hadn’t found him, we don’t know what would have happened, but I would assume four years in the foster care system and then... who knows.

The problem is that Jason was pretty messed up before Bruce got ahold of him, so I can’t say with any certainty that things would have worked out for him if he hadn’t gone with Bruce. I can pretty definitely say that it wouldn’t have involved dying and coming back to life, but I can’t say it would be fun.

And even though Jason is doing really badly now, he’s very young in the grand scheme of things. If he can get to a better place that still involves Bruce, we potentially could be looking at decades of good stuff that ends up outweighing the bad.

But for now, he personally probably would have been better off without Bruce. Of course, if that was the case, a lot of other people would be dead and/or worse off, but that’s not really the question here.

Oh boy that’s a complicated question

As a kid, I think Tim was highly idealistic and very eager to help. He was (and is) super smart, compassionate, and self-sacrificing... the problem being that if you continually sacrifice yourself, bad things tend to happen.

Tim volunteered to become Robin because he thought that Bruce needed him. Since that point, Tim has lost a whole lot of people: his birth parents, several of his siblings, and a lot of his closest friends (Bruce and Dick were fake-dead, Damian died, Cass died twice but both times very briefly, Bart, Stephanie, Kon).

All of that death (plus the trauma of 18086403658 near-death experiences and witnessing crime up close on a daily basis) has made Tim into a different person now than he was at the beginning. To quote Tam Fox, “Tim Drake is the saddest person I’ve eve met.” To quote Tim, “I grew up.”

Most of those people came back, but that doesn’t really fix things.

Grief is a big part of it-- so is this sort of exhaustion that makes Tim a little bit more likely to break rules than the others. His gray area is bigger. He’s a lot like Bruce in that he can be pretty calculating, and sometimes he isolates himself.

Even so, Tim has a lot of meaningful relationships (see above), and he never completely lost his nerdy-ass sense of humor or his empathy. Losing his birth parents was bad, but he did gain a new family, and that’s been good for him. His biggest motivation is still to help other people, and he’s great at it.
