I had a dream that I wrote a tumblr post on labrador retriever colour genetics for some reason and now I'm like well since dog colour genetics IS an interest of mine, why not. I don't remember what I wrote about specifically in my dream but here's a few lab colour facts.

(N.B. I am not getting into the debate of purebred vs mixed, I am not saying one is better than the other etc, just stating a few facts)

There is only one breed of labrador, the labrador retriever. Yellow/brown/black lab just refers to the coat colour. They share the same breed standard, are judged together and can be interbred, they are not different breeds.

All colours you can find in dogs are created through the interaction of two different kinds of colour pigment, they are eumelanin (black/chocolate brown/blue/lilac) and phaeomelanin (all shades of red from deep copper to off-white). White is absence of pigment all together.

For labradors specifically, black and brown are expressions of eumelanin, yellow labs express phaeomelanin. From a genetic viewpoint, all yellow labs from the super pale cream ones to the deep fox red ones are genetically "red", they just have additional genes that bleach/darken their red shade.

Most (maybe all) labrador retrievers are genetically tanpoint ("dobermann pattern") but almost all of them also have a gene called "dominant K" which overrides that pattern, leaving them solid black or brown. In very rare cases, purebred puppies can be born that show the pointed pattern.

Yellow labs also have a gene that prohibits the expression of eumelanin in the coat, instead they exhibit only phaeomelanin, which is otherwise "overridden" by the dominant K, black/brown -> red.

In very rare cases, dogs can have something called a "somatic mutation" where you can get a dog that expresses two or more coat patterns/colours at once. Try googling "somatic mutation labrador" and you'll see some cool labs that are mixed black and yellow, which is normally impossible. This kind of mutation happens randomly, it is not genetic and can not be bred for. It is not the same thing as merle.

Small white markings such as a chest spot or white toes is something that can randomly happen in puppies if the pigment did not have time to develop fully before birth. Often such markings go away as the dog ages and the pigment fills in. However, more extensive white markings (like white that forms a full or partial white collar, extends pasts the toes etc) is a sign that the dog has another breed or breeds mixed in, the genes to produce that amount of white spotting does not exist in purebred labradors.

"Silver" labradors are labs that have been crossbred with a breed that carries the dilution gene (usually a weimaraner), which turns black to blue and brown to lilac. Unscrupulous breeders try to pass these dogs off as rare and exotic purebred labs to fool unsuspecting buyers. Breed DNA tests are not reliable as they can not spot a mixed in breed after 3 generations. The breeding of silver labs is unethical as the dilution gene is tied to health issues, in particular CDA (colour dilution alopecia) which can lead to itchiness, flaky skin, hairless/balding and skin infections.

Artist bonus: - If you are drawing a black lab, it should have a black nose and brown eyes. - If you are drawing a brown lab, it should have a brown or flesh-coloured nose and amber or light brown eyes. It is genetically impossible for a brown lab (or any other dog breed that comes in dark brown/chocolate/liver colour) to have a black nose and dark brown eyes. They just can't produce that kind of pigment. SO many people including professionals get this wrong and it drives me up the wall, use references people lol - If you are drawing a yellow lab, it can have black OR brown pigment "behind the yellow", but black pigment is most common, so black nose/brown eyes. These dogs sometimes have a flesh-coloured spot on their nose, which is called a dudley nose.

The Ink Demonth 4

Today is Choice.

This is a snippet from near the end of my very self-indulgent "A Debt Repaid" story. Which I still need to finish writing the first chapter for.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Fiona asked as she trailed Audrey down the stairs to Wilson’s lab.

“I…I just want to hear him out,” Audrey replied. “If we don’t like what he has to say, we don’t have to go along with it. But I…I want to hear his plan.”

“Alright…”

The two of them descended further into the lab, surrounded by tubes of what appeared to be vibrantly colored ink. Audrey winced as they passed them, trying not to look.

Eventually, they came to a set of doors splattered in color, which opened automatically upon them approaching. Beyond that there was another set of doors, which also opened as they drew nearer.

And there was the lab. They could see it behind a glass window, sealed off from the little alcove area they now found themselves in with a single hydraulic door. There were lockers to their left which Fiona had to stop herself from searching, as well as another of the ink wells that Audrey could apparently now travel through.

“Audrey!” Wilson’s voice crackled through the PA system. “You made it. And you brought your little friend. Good! Come inside, my dear! We have much to discuss. But make sure you’re ready. Where we’re going, there will be no return until we’ve accomplished our mission.”

“So, we’re doing this?” Fiona asked, looking at Audrey.

Audrey nodded with grim determination, tightening her grip on her pipe.

Together, the two women stepped into the lab. Wilson stood before them, hunched over a table littered with blueprints and vials of what they assumed were ink. Further into the lab were various machines and pipes and boilers, none of which the women knew the purpose of. Fiona moved a bit closer to Audrey.

“Thank you for coming all this way,” Wilson said, turning to face them.

“I wanted to hear what your plan to destroy the Ink Demon was,” Audrey responded flatly.

Although externally she seemed cold and detached, internally she was terrified. She wanted to believe Wilson was going to fix everything and help her get home, but the words of both Fiona and Sammy had shaken her faith in him. He had brought her here in the first place. She’d just…She’d needed something to believe in. But Wilson might not have been the best choice.

“Of course.” Wilson nodded. “The Ink Demon is a formidable foe. To truly destroy such a monster, he must be dethroned. Humiliated.”

“Are you sure you need to destroy him?” Fiona asked. “I’m sure he could be talked to if you approached it the right way.” Granted, Wilson talking to the Ink Demon probably wouldn’t work, but she and Audrey certainly had a chance.

“Oh, my dear.” Wilson gave her a patronizing smile. “If only all problems could be solved so simply.” He patted her head as one would that of a child, then continued, ignoring the way Fiona’s hands formed into shaking fists. “For months now I’ve been working on something that will do exactly that. Cast out the demon and put a new deity in his place.” He began to walk, leading them to a large cylinder in the back left corner of the lab. “Stronger, more powerful, and controllable. Together, we just need to unleash our ultimate weapon. Come. Let me show you my creation.” He stepped aside as the tube opened, revealing a drawing on an easel.

The drawing was of a cherubic little cartoon boy with blond hair and chubby red cheeks. He was wearing what looked like a sailor’s uniform, standing in front of a blue ocean and a palm tree, with a little crab by his feet. The drawing was labelled “Shipahoy Dudley”.

“Isn’t he beautiful?” Wilson asked. “Simple, but elegant. A treasure. Powerful beyond anyone. The Ink Demon will fall, and we can have peace at last.”

“He is pretty cute,” Fiona begrudgingly conceded.

“It could work…” Audrey admitted. “But it sounds risky,” she added. “How will we control him? We don’t want to repeat Joey’s mistake.”

“Control him?!” Fiona sputtered. “He’s not some kind of puppet for you to jerk around on a string! If you bring him to life, you need to treat him like a human being! That was Joey’s mistake!”

Audrey shot Fiona a warning look. Poking the bear wouldn’t do them any good. They needed to hear Wilson’s full plan. Fiona shrunk a bit under Audrey’s gaze, but she was clearly still extremely upset.

“No. We don’t,” Wilson agreed, completely ignoring Fiona’s outburst. “All of the factors must be perfect.” As he spoke, the tube slid closed, beginning to rotate. “The right design, the right science, and…” The tube slid open again, revealing what appeared to be a person sized chamber. “The right soul.” Suddenly, sawblades appeared from slats in the tube, causing both Audrey and Fiona to stumble back.

“What?” Audrey’s eyes went wide.

“At last, your purpose is revealed, Audrey.” Wilson stepped in front of her. “This is why you’re here! With your soul inside him, my creation will live forever.”

“Stay away from me!” Audrey yelled. “You’re insane!”

“We need to go. We need to go right now.” Fiona tugged on Audrey’s arm, although she was shaking too much to run.

“Come now, Audrey,” Wilson said, voice sickly sweet. “Part of you knew this was your path. Although…” He paused, slowly turning his attention to the panicked Fiona. “If you truly cannot be convinced, perhaps your little friend will do.”

“No! You’re not using either of us!” Audrey snapped, putting herself between Wilson and Fiona.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to use her?” Wilson asked, taking a step toward them. “Think about it. If she provides the soul for my creation, we could rule this place together.”

“I don’t want to rule anything!” Audrey backed away, still placed firmly between Fiona and Wilson.

“Well, then I can send you home.” Wilson shrugged. “You never have to think about this place ever again.”

“I…I thought you said we needed to save your father!” Audrey tried to sound as angry as she had before, but they could all hear how her voice faltered.

Wilson smiled wide. “I lied. My father is beyond hope. Perhaps you know him. Nathan Arch, owner of ArchGate, industrial genius, business tycoon.” As he spoke, his expression soured. “For years, I’ve lived in his reaching shadow. He always had time for the grand creatives of the world, the doers as he called them. He knew only the best! The biggest thinkers! How could his lowly son ever hope to compete with that? But now, thanks to you, I can.”

“Well, that explains a thing or two.” Carmine’s voice came from Fiona’s bag.

Fiona looked on the verge of tears, looking frantically between Audrey and the door.

“What do you say, Audrey?” Wilson asked. “Why not let me use her? After all, you said yourself, she doesn’t understand what you’ve gone through. Wouldn’t you like to teach her a lesson?”

Audrey was silent, genuinely considering Wilson’s proposal. She was so tired of fighting. She was so tired of this awful place. She just wanted to go home.

You could leave this all behind, a small traitorous voice whispered in her mind. Wash your hands of your father’s sins. Move on. She wanted to come here, didn’t she? Let her stay.

Fiona tried to run. She didn’t get very far before Wilson grabbed her wrist and roughly pulled her back.

“Let me go!” Fiona screamed, kicking and attempting to hit Wilson with her free hand. She was starting to cry as she struggled. Wilson held her at arm’s length, keeping her far enough away that she couldn’t reach him with her short arms.

Despite her previous mental turmoil, Audrey knew her choice was clear now. “Leave her alone!” She surged forward, swinging her pipe at Wilson.

Wilson caught her wrist as she swung, halting the pipe’s trajectory. “So, that is your choice,” he said with a smile. He shoved Fiona away, sending her stumbling back to hit her head against the wall and crumple to the ground.

“Let us go!” Audrey tried to hit him with her other hand, but Wilson grabbed that arm and held it too.

“No need to struggle,” he cooed. “My signal prevents you from using those devilish powers of yours…and more importantly, keeps the Ink Demon from getting in. It’s time to die, Audrey…” He began to drag her toward the now whirring saws in the chamber. “And live again…” She tried to struggle against him, but it was no use. He was much stronger than she was. “As a god!”

They were almost at the chamber now. Audrey could hear her heart pounding in her ears. She couldn’t count on Fiona to help her. Not after being shoved into the wall like that. Plus, if Wilson could overpower her, Fiona stood no chance. And it wasn’t like Carmine was going to be any help. He’d already expended a great deal of energy getting them past the Keepers. Audrey had to get free on her own.

Spurred on by adrenaline and desperation, she used her limited mobility to whack the pipe against his head. This did little to stop Wilson from continuing to drag her, but it loosened his grip enough that she was able to get that hand free.

“No!” She ripped her hand away. “Not this time!”

Pulling her arm back, she swung the pipe with all her might, landing a solid enough hit to disorient Wilson and make him let go of her other hand as both of his went up to clutch his head. Not wasting a second, she used to opportunity to push him away. Right into the waiting saws. Wilson screamed. Audrey looked away. The tube slid closed again, a sign behind it lighting up, now reading, “Subject accepted”.

The sweet, metallic scent of blood filled the air.

Fiona let out a small, strangled noise that sounded like something between a sob and a squeak.

“Are you alright?” Audrey asked, turning back to her.

She didn’t want to look at the tube. She couldn’t look at the tube. Killing a human being was so different from killing an ink creature. The ink creatures simply dissolved back to the ink when they died, the only sign they’d ever been there being a small puddle on the ground.

A human remained.

Fiona didn’t answer, still staring at the tube with wide eyes.

“Fiona.” Audrey knelt in front of her, blocking the other woman’s view of the carnage. “Are you alright?”

“I…” Fiona took a shaky breath. “My…My head hurts. But I…I think I’m okay.”

“Good.” Audrey nodded. “We should…We should go.”

She helped Fiona to her feet, gently leading her toward the door that had opened in the back.

Ink Demonth day 4: Choice

It was over.

That horrible thing that was supposed to be Shipahoy Dudley was dead. The Ink Demon had finished it off and dragged it away, after… after it had torn Audrey’s legs off.

If Wilson had his way, that monster would have been her. And even though his plan had failed, she wasn’t much better off, was she? If she gave into the puddles and came back, would they be repaired? Or would she fall to pieces like so many of the Studio’s other inhabitants? She didn’t know.

Audrey hurt worse than she had words to describe, and her vision swam with black as she fought to stay conscious and whole, to figure out what to do. All too soon, she heard a splash, felt the cold chill of a writhing inky shadow covering the ground below her.

The Ink Demon was back.

Audrey tried to flee, to hide, but she had no legs to stand on, and her hands shook with exhaustion as she tried to pull herself away. It was useless, and she turned back to the Demon, watching as he approached.

Rather than taking advantage of her weakened state and killing her, the Demon stopped just in front of her, leaning down to look at her.

“It’s okay, Audrey,” his voice echoed in her head. “You fought well. It’s over.”

Audrey let out a shaky breath. It seemed the Ink Demon wasn’t going to kill her, at least for the time being, but that hardly made things better. She was still in the heart of Wilson’s lab, surrounded by Keepers and Lost Ones who had been loyal to him, and she had the man’s blood on her hands. Not to mention he’d been the only person that seemed to know how to travel between the Cycle and the world outside. Was she just stuck here now, helpless and surrounded by enemies?

Audrey could feel tears building in her eyes, and she couldn’t keep them from spilling out.

“No need to cry, Audrey,” the demon’s voice boomed. “I’m here to help. To make you an offer.”

“W-what kind of offer, exactly?” Audrey asked.

“Power. Strength. You won’t ever have to worry about Keepers or Lost Ones again. The Studio will be yours,” the Demon said. He reached out his hand, though his long, clawed fingers stopped short of actually touching her. “Join me. Become the Demon.”

Audrey flinched backward instinctively, the idea of becoming the monster that had terrorized the Cycle for so long utterly repulsive. The Ink Demon didn’t seem offended by her reaction.

“You can stay this way, weak and helpless, and suffer. Or you can join me, and never have to fear anything again. It’s your choice.”

Audrey bit her lip. It seemed like all she had done since arriving in the Cycle was run and hide and fight from the shadows. She hadn’t had a quiet moment until arriving at Wilson’s mansion, and even that had been brief. She was tired. She was in pain.

“Okay,” she said, reaching her hand up to take the Demon’s. “Okay, then.”

~ Chapter #1: "Super Soldier: Mrs. Katswell"

So, Mrs. Katswell tries to visit her daughter Kitty Katswell at work inside T.U.F.F. Headquarters for Mother’s Day like she does every year, but she accidentally gets blasted by Keswick’s new "Super Vitamin Ray" that ultimately made her a "Super Soldier Secret Agent" by mistake!!

~ Chapter #2: "The Goddess's New Clothes"

After chasing down Birdbrain & his henchmen throughout the Space-Time continuum after they had stolen a experimental time machine from T.U.F.F. headquarters, Mrs. Katswell soon gets separated from the rest of the group as she is soon stranded in Ancient Egypt!! Not only that but she is also now worshiped as a cat goddess by the local Ancient Egyptians themselves as well. So essentially both Kitty & Dudley have to convince Mrs. Katswell to come back with them to the present to save the future!!

~ Chapter #3: “Secret Agent Fight Club”

So essentially Kitty & Dudley must infiltrate D.O.O.M.'S latest diabolical scheme which happens to be a Fight Club type of scenario where are all the greatest villains in Petropolis kidnap random T.U.F.F. agents from around the world and force them to fight to the death for their amusement. So, their mission is to stop D.O.O.M.'S fight club and free the other T.U.F.F. Agents as well while Kitty & Dudley will have the face off against a mind-controlled Mrs. Katswell!!!

~ Chapter #4: “The Good, The Bad & The Katty"

So, when Kitty’s evil twin sister Katty Katswell is seemingly released from prison for “good behavior” and learns about her mother’s strange and accidental transformation into T.U.F.F.’s first “Super Soldier Secret Agent”, she soon starts to devise a rather devious plan to manipulate her mother’s love for her to eliminate Kitty & Dudley once & for all!!

~ Chapter #5: “The Katswell Family Curse”

So, on a seemingly ordinary morning at T.U.F.F. Headquarters, everyone at the office was wondering why both Kitty Katswell and Mrs. Katswell are completely on edge that particular day as they all soon realized that both Kitty Katswell, Mrs. Katswell and even Katty Katswell all start to rapidly grow and transform into giant monstrous black cats due to a shared family curse that they all share whenever the calendar lands itself on the dreaded Friday the 13th with Dudley being caught right in the middle of it!!

~ Chapter #6: “The Stone Age Caper”

So essentially Snaptrap & his D.O.O.M. henchmen were trying to steal a “devolution ray” from the Petropolis University & while Kitty, Dudley & Mrs. Katswell were chasing after them, Snaptrap accidentally dropped the device which accidentally shot both Kitty and Dudley while devolving them into a Sabertooth Cat & a Dire Wolf respectfully, now it's up to Mrs. Katswell to capture Snaptrap & his goons while also figuring out a way to change her daughter and her best friend back to normal!!!

~ Chapter #7: "The Incredible Kat-Zilla”

So, after a long week of non-stop crime fighting, both Kitty, Dudley & Mrs. Katswell are nearly at their wit’s end with all the constant stress from their back-to-back missions, but when The Chameleon secretly breaks-into T.U.F.F. Headquarters to steal from T.U.F.F.’s massive food contraband storage, he accidentally caused a massive lab explosion that caused an extra mutation inside Mrs. Katswell’s body that rapidly transforms her into a giant, muscular & nearly unstoppable radioactive “Kat-Zilla”!!

~ Chapter #8: “Cats & Dogs, Mass Hysteria!”

So, while Mrs. Katswell is busy battling against The Caped Cod & his giant mecha suit in the middle of Downtown Petropolis, Dudley Puppy finally works up the nerve to ask Kitty Katswell to marry him (much to the shock & awe of pretty much everyone else at T.U.F.F.) with some particularly heartwarming & hilarious results!!!

Going more into the Demon Patrol AU

Starting with:

Audrey Drew (originally Bethany Stein)

Age: 97

Parents: originally Henry and Linda Stein. Currently Joey Drew

Powers: shapeshifting, size shifting and elasticity

Background: She believes that she was born an adult and made in joeys lab.

In actuality, she was a 19 year old aspiring actress in 1946 who had just moved away from home to pursue an acting role on a small time movie to jumpstart her career.

Unbeknownst to her, the river near where they were shooting had been closed off due to toxic waste dumping making it incredibly dangerous (this fact was hidden from most of the crew by the producers and directors)

She fell in and when they pulled her out she was literally melting and near unconscious. So they assumed she was basically f••ked and ran off, leaving her to die.

But Joey found her and took her in, saving her from becoming a half conscious flesh blob monster.

But she had lost all her memories in the process and instead of taking her back home to possibly return these memories, Joey convinced her that HE was her dad and that she’s basically an artificial human he grew in his lab.

The incident made her immortal and appear to be permanently 19. But it also made her body unstable and prone to melting when stressed.

She’s very loyal to her “dad” and his biggest defender until a lotta his secrets and lies unravel.

Next up

Adam Arch

Age: 61

Family: son of Wilson Arch, grandson of the famous Nathan Arch, twin brother of Dudley Arch

Powers: flight, telepathy, breathing underwater and emits dangerous radiation

Background: his grandfather was a rich and famous businessman so he was born to wealth. His father, Wilson, did not wanna take up the family business, instead aspiring to become a sailor searching for mythical creatures.

He took his 10 year old twin boys on one of his expeditions to find a lovecraftian beast. They managed to find it and it didn’t go well.

Wilson survived with just an eye injury, but Dudley was seemingly dead from the incident and Adam was discovered barely alive.

The close proximity to the lovecraftian beast exposed Adam to cosmic radiation that SHOULDVE killed him, but didn’t. But it did make his body radioactive.

The doctors he was taken to didn’t know how to help him since they couldn’t touch him without death or injury. So Joey took him in and convinced the doctors to tell Wilson and Nathan that Adam died from his injuries.

Joey managed to save him and give him special gear to wear to contain the radiation and hide his unnatural deformities.

He told Adam that his dad had decided to have him stay with Joey permanently to continue to get medical treatment.

Adam grew to adulthood but it’s unknown if he’s aging past his 20s since the transformation makes him look completely inhuman.

He’s pretty laidback and accepting of weird s••t, but he’s also kinda weird himself due to the telepathy and spending like half his childhood in the mansion with Joey.

He actually knows about a lot of joeys secrets and lies but decided to act like he doesn’t cause he doesn’t have anything better to go to if he spills the tea and everything falls apart because of it.

Next one:

Isaac Connor (this aus version of the ink demon)

Age: 79

Parents: Thomas and Allison Connor

Powers: super strength, intangibility, near invulnerability and fear inducement (basically he can emit an aura that causes people in it to become extremely panicked. Doesn’t know about this power cause he’s never knowingly used it)

Background: born to a broadway actress and an ace mechanic in the late 40s, Isaac aspired to become a mechanic like his dad.

But his father did not want his son anywhere near the practice that’s f••ked up his life. Isaac pursued this career path anyways, straining his relationship with his dad, but still being close with his mom.

As happy as he was with his job, his true dream was to have a kid of his own. But he struggled to find the right partner to settle down with. He was starting to get somewhere with a woman named Alice and even thought she may be the one.

But soon after proposing to her, in 1978, he got into an accident during one of his gigs that crushed his body to near death.

The doctor knew he wouldn’t survive, so tried to let his parents see him before he died.

But Joey managed to steal him before his parents came and transferred his soul into the body of a dead artificial demon to save him. He was not at all happy about it but had nowhere else to go, being a 9 foot demon creature now.

So he stayed. But he is NOT taking it well.

He tends to be very rude and aggressive. Drinking despite not being able to get drunk (he’s hoping the placebo effect will make him feel drunk. Doesn’t work) and trying to add a swear into every sentence.

And Last one:

Bendy

Age: 14

Family: refers to Joey as “father” but was mostly raised by Audrey, Adam and Isaac

Powers: complicated

Background: Joey told him he rescued him from a dangerous facility that made him. This ain’t true but his true origins are a mystery for now.

Joey brought him to the mansion as a baby and requested the other 3 help raise him. They did and ended up being more present guardians in his life than Joey, especially Audrey and Isaac.

Unbeknownst to them til bendy turned 14, bendy is the vessel to an unknown being simply referred to as “the machine”.

Joey finally informed them of this after bendy accidentally turned into a being called “the beast” and attacked some people during an outing with Isaac to a nearby town that turned nasty.

Later, they discovered that all the souls the machine has consumed (the lost ones) over the years live inside of bendys mind and can possess bendy temporarily with his permission.

Only a few really do this but each one has a unique superpower that can be useful in certain situations.

Examples:

Sammy- can put everyone within a 20 foot radius to sleep with music

Scott- can drive like an absolute madman and never get into an accident

Constance- can make liquids explode

Bill- can fix anything that’s not alive

Brant- anyone who tries to tell him a lie will involuntarily tell him a secret instead

There’s more but those are some examples

Bendy is incredibly smart and very curious. He’s practicing his sleuthing skills in order to become a detective someday

(even if he knows that’ll never happen since he’s not human and doesn’t look human)
