Now that Dracula daily is over and thousands of people have finally read the book, I’m begging that ONE of you has the courage to make an actually book accurate movie adaption. It’s what we deserve

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Or Why The Probably Most Accurate Movie Adaptation Of Dracula Still Is Not Accurate Enough
I mentioned some time ago - while salivating over the marvellous razor scene of Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula adaptation - that there is quite some stuff to unpack here. And now I found some time to unpack. So let's begin. I'll start with the good stuff, firstly the good stuff that's not in the book (i.e., the Flourishes), than the good stuff that's true to the book (the Well-Conserved). Thirdly, I'll make note of things that were, unnervingly, changed (by which I mean They Came Back Wrong), and then I'll deal with what is unfortunately left out from the book (the Missing). And finally, finally I'll rant over that one bad thing that never was in the book in the first place (a section I'll call JUST WHY?).
So. A tragedy in five acts. Here we go.
Act I - The Flourishes
The razor scene. I think I dealt with this enough by now. It's perfection and I'll die on that hill.
The music. Obviously, Bram Stoker's gothic lil masterpiece is lacking some gorgeous score. But mourn no longer, because Wojciech Kilar cooked up some dashing, pushing tune for us, fitting perfectly to this dark tale of spreading darkness and deepening madness.
Some basic knowledge about blood groups. Yeah, Stoker can't be blamed for this, but still. It's a nice addition to remind us that we do indeed live in a world where blood groups exist.
The Westenra Estate. As much as I pity that the lovely town of Whitby did not make it into the movie, I do love Lucy Westenra's house. Because I'm a sucker for hedge mazes. Simple as that.
Those glasses. Those. Fucking. Nice. Glasses.
Tumblr media
Act II - The Well-Conserved
The plot in general. Yes, there are a lot of maddening differences, as we will see soon. But still, this movie at least makes the impression that most of the people working on it had indeed read the darn novel. Which is something that I can't say about many other Dracula adaptations I have seen.
The costumes, the sets, the atmosphere. Well done, everyone!
The Actors. The good thing about being not native in a language is that one is not very prone to dialects that seem off. And as I happen to not be a native speaker of English, I have little problems with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder adding some US touch to what should be very, very, v e r y British characters. I even find Reeves perfectly fitting for the oh so darn young Jonathan Harker. And the rest of the cast is marvellous, too (with the exception of Winona Ryder, see below for details). Especially Tom Waits, who is hard-wired to the name of Renfield in my brain ever since I first saw this movie. And Gary Oldman as Dracula… Well. I think I already made clear what opinion I have about that sexy bastard.
Some lucky few of lovely quotes made it over to the film. Dracula's welcome. The Fowl Bauble of Human Vanity, of course. And Qunincey almost making me faint when saying "Little girl" when I least expected it.
Act III - They Came Back Wrong
The dates. Goshdarnit, the dates! It's an epistolary novel, so why make the effort of making up completely new dates for events that already had a precise date in the novel? I just don't get it. And it unnerves me. Every. Fucking. Time.
Time in general. Watching the movie after Dracula Daily makes it feel so very, very hasty. Jonathan travels to Castle Dracula like it's no thing at all. And the first few days in Castle Dracula are condensed into one weird evening.
Dracula meeting Mina before Jonathan is back. I really, really loved the book for avoiding the most terrible tropes. And then comes this movie, and struts right into this terrible pitfall.
Mina. I'm sorry, usually I love the work of Winona Ryder, but here she was way too bland. Maybe it was because her character had quite a revamp (ha. ha.) and no one cared to tell her what new approach she should take. But whatever reason, the clever, adorable train fiend of the original did not deserve this!
Act IV - The Missing
The Voyage of the Demeter is way too short. Where is "But I am captain, and I must not leave my ship"? Where is the poor sea captain tying himself to the wheel? And where is his funeral? Oh, I really missed all that. And, I mean, I don't mind hearing Anthony Hopkins read the lines, but would it have been such an expense to at least hire an additional actor to voice the correspondent or the sea captain?
Jonathan Holding Mina By the Arm. That's really not an objectively big issue. That's just me who fell in love with JonMina after reading this chapter. And almost no one does it properly. They deserve justice!
Tumblr media
(Thanks a ton to @smieska for capturing my mood just perfectly!)
Act V - JUST WHY?
Elisabeta. Don't get me wrong here: All of the oh so tragic Drac backstory they invented for this movie is terribly unnecessary. But in this sea of uselessness, the tragically deceased wife of Vlad Țepeș that just so happens to perfectly resemble Mina Murray is an audience-insulting island of unoriginality. I mean, yeah, I guess someone wanted to add some romance to the story of Vlad the Fucking Impaler. Because, well, nineties or so. But Mina, of all women? Why not invent some new character that can be bothered with such stuff? Why ruin an all-nice JonMina ship? I don't get the whole new backstory, and I especially don't get this aspect.
Dracula raping Lucy in his shitty werewolf form. Everything about this is wrong. And it has no relevance for the plot. Just. Blergh.
Epilogue
It's cruel to watch Francis Ford Coppola's take on Dracula right after finishing @re-dracula. I know that now. Everything is still too fresh. It's a good movie, after all, but especially because it's quite good it is frustrating to be so terribly aware of all its shortcomings. In a few weeks or so, I would recommend it, again, I guess. As long as it's still Dracula Off-Season. 7 out of 10 points.

I’m usually a “why can’t they just adapt the book” person when it comes to Dracula (92’ is a guilty pleasure it’s so close yet so far). However, Renfield is a utter fucking delight of a film. It’s bloody , disgusting, fun! It’s detached from the book as it takes after the 30s film, so much so his backstory is shot for shot.
Idk sometimes we can have fun Dracula films I won’t scream about being inaccurate. Absolute poor little meow meow, love his sad 80+ year old ass.

Supremely disappointed in the Demeter movie. Spoilers ensue!
Let's start with what I liked:
I'm glad they decided to make Drac a hideous freak because at least he was interesting to look at. They showed him a lot (too much?) so thank goodness he was cool. You could maybe even play it off within book rules by saying that Dracula takes many forms, and if he wasn't worried about appearing as a man to fool others into entering legal trade of real estate/cargo transportation services with him, maybe he was appearing as this freaky gargoyle version because he just could.
The chef character was at least kinda compelling and I liked the storyline of him taking out one dude so he could steal a rowboat and try to escape, only for Drac to find him, kill him, and bring the empty boat back to the Demeter - ominously! If they'd played into the dramatic irony and played closer to the book story, it still would have fit and worked well.
Which is a great transition into what I did not like.
Firstly, they should have leaned a lot heavier into the dramatic irony. We as an audience know we're in for a Dracula movie...but the characters do and should not! They could have showed Dracula (in his freak ass form) taking out these dudes one by one, but the characters of the story? All they see is blood on the deck, and another man missing. You can draw out the characters and the story by making them decide how to react to the mystery and if/how to plot against each other.
If you read the subtext of the book, then you can maybe infer that the first mate has heard of Dracula, but you don't really know. None of the crew know of him. So you could have made it so some were skeptical, some were convinced it was supernatural, others are convinced it's some sort of religious punishment (the chef character story fits in), and they split into factions. So you're getting tense, charged moments between characters, but meanwhile you're also getting the horror porn satisfaction of scenes of Drac taking out each crewman (maybe overlaid, cut by cut...I can just imagine the cinnamontopography...
They showed Dracula to the other characters too soon. Characters knew it was a creepy being amongst them too soon. The horror lies in the wonder: is it a monster? Or is a man amongst us a monster?
They honestly could have added the dog and the boy and the doctor and maybe even the lady and still made the book story work. The lady didn't need to know about Dracula though. She could have been just an actual stowaway; easily Dracula's first victim, due to her proximity, and desire to remain hidden from the other crewmates. But somehow, Dracula is interrupted before he can drain her. Maybe by the dog, who barks and raises the alarm? But then the crew thinks the dog was just alerting them about the stowaway, not the monster. You could have had a whole scene where the captain promises the invented ship's doctor character about how he won't record her in the log, because maybe she has some troubled past she's escaping from. Then it's like an explanation as to why she isn't in the book, but it fits the story anyway. Some of the crewmates can blame her for the disappearances: whether it's bad luck because she's a lady, or maybe she is really a murderer, or maybe she's secretly working for Dracula! It all plays into the drama, and even the viewers don't know if she's working for Drac or not because she wasn't there in the novel.
The first mate should have been the one who vaguely knew the story of Dracula. Maybe he grew up just outside of Dracula's reach, but heard stories of village children going missing closer to the mountains. He's in denial at first: he's a skeptic, and he refuses to believe that this old wives' tale is actually responsible for something as serious as his actual crew's lives. But as the evidence becomes more and more clear that it really is Dracula, he doubts his sanity until, until! It's just him and the captain left. In his madness, he refuses to stay within the lantern light by the captain. Instead, he goes below deck and tears open the crates one by one. Dracula, sated with the blood of the rest of the crew, only smiles at him.
Here's where you get the real good shot of Dracula looking like a real nasty little bitch, all creepy and shit. You have only gotten glimpses so far, quick shots almost as though they're from the perspective of a crewmate getting hunted. But now, the first mate sees him, chin still blood-stained (maybe the last person Drac killed was the little boy and the body is missing, but the first mate walks into him sucking that son down like a capri sun) and the first mate comes out from below deck, hollering about true evil and throws himself off the side, just like in the book.
The captain refuses to go below deck, believing the first mate killed the others, including the boy, so he lashed himself to the wheel...until Drac comes for him too! He's out, awake constantly, through bitter night and blaring sun, so even he isn't sure when he finally sees Drac. But he does, and he records it. And just as he sees land, we get a nice gorey scene where Drac takes out the captain.
Cut to the ship landing at Whitby. At the very beginning of the movie, it started with the gathered townsfolk trying to explore the ship. For the last bits, maybe you get some scenes of them gathering together to see this weird ship (Mina and Lucy cameo???) But at the very end, all you get is the ships crashing near the docks (big gasp from the gathered townsfolk) and the dog jumps off and runs away. We end with a shot of this dog coming right at you as it jumps off the ship.
Anyway, I still have more critiques.
There were just too many people alive at the last bit. I think the tension builds when slowly you're left with 4, then 3, then 2, then only 1 person to man a full sized sailboat. Part of the horror is being alone at sea! Not just that people are dying, but you're being left without them in a perilous situation.
They also chose to show other people get infected with vampirism (which I don't like because you can't become a vampire unless you drink the blood of a vampire, but fine they can just change the rules. I don't like it but that's maybe a me problem.), and subsequently those bitten die when exposed to sunlight. So why didn't the crew just all nap on deck during the day (with shifts) and kept watch all together overnight? To me it's so obvious that it becomes a plot hole.

Trouble in Transylvania- Renfield x Reader (Dracula 1931)
Summary: You and Renfield travel to Transylvania as newlyweds but an unexpected turn to events leads you both to meet the infamous Count known as Dracula.
Tumblr media
(Based on the 1930's version of Draculaura. Decided to finally finish writing this since the movie Renfield will be released soon and I love Dwight Frye's performance)
I continued resting my head against the window to the carriage, hoping to be able to get some more rest. I had never been much for traveling but this time I decided to join my husband on his trip. We got married early this week and him as a real estate agent was being sent off to Transylvania instead of Jonathan Harker who was much too busy to travel.
I fought the man to take his place since I wanted my husband and I as newlyweds to enjoy our time together. Unfortunately, things turned around for the worse.
We were a bit tight on money so Renfield accepted on going to Transylvania and I refused to leave his side. I closed my eyes and tried my best to fall asleep, though it would be impossible since the rays of sun kept hitting my face. My husband was excited since I decided to come over to Transylvania with him, my father on the other hand was worried but didn't question me any further.
I felt a squeeze on my hand and opened my eyes to see that we had arrived at a village. "We are here, my love." I smiled warmly at my husband as we both watched outside.
Some people were excited to receive us but some I noticed closed their doors and windows. "Did you see that?" I question letting go of my husband's hand when we stepped out of the carriage and he began to grab our belongings.
"Don't think much of it. They are probably shy around newcomers." He plays it off and smiles at a small crowd of people who surrounded us, to greet us.
I look around my surroundings and noticed that very far away from where we are is a castle laying on top of a mountain. That's odd.
My husband was busy talking to another man who was talking in Hungarian. The man seemed anxious, the man next to him seemed relived to see new people around. I continued looking around wanting to also learn more about this place.
I felt my husband looking at me lovingly when he reached to grab my hand and planted a kiss on top of it.
"Ah! I see the look in your eyes. We have a new young married couple." The man cheered looking at us, some speaking in Hungarian.
"Oh, we are not here for our honeymoon." I tried to say.
"We need to head up that castle." Renfield said to them both.
"He's saying that the man is afraid." Another man said showing up behind Renfield and I.
"Why should he be? I noticed people loving up their windows as well. We don't want anymore trouble, we came here for just one job." I insist wanting all of this to be over.
"We're here to meet Count Dracula."
We watched as the man's faces slowly changed to horror. "Count Dracula? Dracula's castle?"
"Yes. That's where we're going."
I noticed the man still looking terrified and a woman nearby praying as soon we we spoke of the Counts name.
One of the men continued to shake his head. "No, you mustn't go there. We people of the mountains believe that castle has vampires. Dracula and his wives."
I stare at him confused, "Wives?" as in plural?
"They take the form of wolves and bats. They leave their coffins at night and feed on blood of the living."
"That must be all superstition, right? How can vampires be a real thing." I said trying to play it off. Oh, I do hope that isn't true.
"Look the sun, that's when they leave their coffins." The man warned us and ran off. My husband and I exchanged looks and deep down we both were terrified of what the man said.
"Come we must come indoors." The man said.
My husband grabbed my hand and we both began to follow the man for more questions surrounding the place, the man didn't convince my husband, he insisted on leaving.
An older woman stopped us before entering the carriage and handing us a small silver cross.
There was a moment of silence between us as we rode the next carriage. It was getting darker and I could feel a strong tension between us, the air felt heavy and cold. I kept glancing back at my lap and outside staring at nothing since it was imposible to make out anything.
"You…Y-You don't think what they said is real?.." I mutter and glanced back at my husband, as I played with the cross the lady back then gave to us, tying it as a necklace around my neck.
His eyes met my dark ones and I could sense him also shivering, and I'm sure it wasn't from the cold.
"There's nothing for you to worry about, (Y/N). We'll just spend the night and first thing tomorrow morning we'll head back home." He said trying to cheer me up and smile.
I was still uncertain about coming to this place at night. Everything seems off and I can feel eyes on us despite being inside the carriage still. I looking down at my lap when I noticed my husband peering to look outside.
The carriage had stopped and my husband was the first to step outside and we noticed that the man driving us up here wasn't present. "It's like a ghost drive us up here." I shiver and reached out to grab Renfield's arm.
Renfield remained silent and we both stepped back when the door to our right creaked. We both exchanged looks and he began to step forward but I remained still.
"We'll just take a quick look, it worn take long." I didn't trust my husband's words but decided to go inside with him than to stay outside.
Once we entered the castle, sound of bats nearby could be heard along with howls of s wolf nearby. "This is…"
I couldn't put into words the castle interior looks, creepy, elegant and expensive.
"I am Dracula. I bid you welcome."
Renfield and I quickly turned to look up at the stairs and saw a tall man, with hair as black as a raven's feathers, pale as the snow, wearing s dark and expensive suit with a long cloak.
I was frightened by his presence, we didn't even hear him coming in. Renfield was surprised by it but didn't show it, immediately going over to introduce himself and I.
He had the papers which were to be given to the Count himself, we followed Dracula who showed us one of the rooms we would be staying it.
"Miss (Y/N). I have prepared a different room, i hope it is to you liking." Count Dracula said, his eyes lingering on me.
Renfield furrowed his eyebrows together while examining a few documents. He also felt uneasy about Dracula, I could tell. I looked away refusing to meet Dracula's eyes.
They seems to be calling to me, his eyes are cold yet alluring.
I forced a smile on my lips but had to face him since it wouldn't be polite look away. "I appreciate you taking the time, count Dracula. But Renfield is my husband, I wouldn't mind sharing the bedroom with him."
I assured him and placed my hand on my husband's shoulder. Renfield placed his other hand on top of my own, the silver ring adorning his finger and showing to Dracula that we are married
I remained stating at the ground and could feel Dracula staring at us, at me. "Excellent. Whatever you wish my dear." The man smiled and began to pour some wine for us on a crystal glass.
He poured two for Renfield and I. I found it off that a man like him would refuse a drink. "Aren't you going to drink some?" I ask wanting to know.
Dracula gave us a small smile and stood back tall. "I don't drink wine. I prefer something a but more sweet, if you will."
I saw the man lowly said with his very Hungarian accent. Renfield took a sip and I knew Dracula wouldn't give up until he would see us drinking, "I-I appreciate the wine, Count Dracula.. but I regret to say that I won't be able to savor the taste."
Now both men stared at me. Renfield s bit confused on why I wouldn't drink the wine. "I understand." Dracula said nodding his head once.
"I will leave you both to rest."
The man stood back tall as ever and elegant. Renfield and I remained silent until we were sure that he had left the room.
I took a deep breath and felt my heart pounding . I reached down and grabbed my husband's hand and examined his wound, as soon as the small cut landed on his skin I saw Dracula looking weird.
"We must leave this place first thing tomorrow mornings." I whisper refusing to leave his side when he stood up, I wrapped my arms around him and felt him hugging me back.
"Now my dear, there is nothing for you to be scared of-" I followed his eyes when we saw three bats outside of our room, the windows were open.
All of a sudden my husband fainted and I was left to run to his side and I felt frightened when I saw the Count all of the sudden appear, now disappearing of his bat form. I sensed something behind me and I turned around to see three woman in white gowns, almost looking like ghosts
My eyes rolled to the back of my head and I also fainted falling over my husband. I felt the world dark and cold, feeling cold hands grabbing me and moving my hair away from my neck.
"Seward's Sanitarium"
The building that was once in front of me read in bold in front of the metal gates. "You are mistaken, doctor. I am not crazy. I k-know what I must say can sound weird but it's true! I was stuffed inside a coffin, found everyone of them dead and was taken out of the box by..my husband..where is he?!"
I exclaimed sitting still and looking at the doctor in hope. The man wrote a few things down and stared at me weirded out. "He's gone mad, Mrs Renfield. He's in our care now. Though it would seem that you are talking nonsense but you are not as insane as him."
Doctor Seward stopped talking when the doors opened and I saw an older man in glasses, looking almost as elegant as Dracula.
"Pleasure to meet you, Miss. My name is Van Helsing. You arrived along with Mr. Renfield, yes?"
The voice of the man made me calm down, seems to be the only one willing to listen to me. "Y-Yes. We came in the boat with the dead passengers."
The man smiled just a little and took a seat next to me. "Your grandparents and I were once friends, I'm sorry to hear that they passed away long ago.. tell me..what do you remember?"
"All I remember is waking up, I hadn't realized I was in a coffin until I heard the voice of my husband. He took me out of the coffin, i didn't see anything strange in him but he did begin to act weird when I heard him talking to someone..Mr. Van Helsing can I see him?" I pleaded hoping he'll let me.
Dr Seward Harker and Van Helsing exchanged looks. "I don't think-"
"I think this could be a great opportunity. Renfield hasn't been communicating with us, maybe he'll explain to you more on what happened." Van Helsing said.
"This woman here isn't insane, Doctor. Let's see what can happen." I nodded thanking the man. I followed Van Helsing close until we reached a room with two men standing guard.
Doctor Seward was just behind us but remained silent. "Try not to anger him, he can get quite violent." He said before I would enter
"I doubt he'll be able to harm me doctor."
"Just know that the man in there may not be the same man you once knew." Van Helsing told me which made me feel upset.
I took a deep breath and entered the room and saw Renfield staring outside the window. "Renfield..dear.." I softly spoke.
Renfield slowly turned and tilted his head to look at me. His eyes seemed different, almost insane like. "(Y/N)?" He sounded surprised to see me.
My lips quivered and without warning I stepped closer to him and wrapped my arms around him. Slowly I felt him wrap an arm around me and rest his head on my shoulder.
I heard the door open again and Renfield quickly stepped back against the wall, insanely staring at Van Helsing and doctor Seward.
"Did they harm you?" I felt Renfield right behind me and staying hidden since I had stepped between the men.
"They didn't. All they've done is help me..did they harm you?" I ask slowly and see his dark eyes look between me and them.
"They won't let me eat spiders anymore."
I furrow my eyebrows together confused and looked at the doctors instead. "He believes that those are sufficient nutrients for him, since he can't feed off of blood." The nurse told me.
"What did Dracula do to you?' I ask glancing behind.
"He seems to stare outside at nights and howls along with the wolves." I heard Van Helsing's tell me. "Renfield has been warning us about Mina's safety."
Mina? I turn and the doctor answered that it is his fiance. He filled me in that women have been dying under strange circumstances, all of them of blood loss. This is definitely Dracula's doing.
"Did the master harm you?" I turn to look back at my husband and I shook my head. Despite him being under control by Dracula, he still worried about me.
"I haven't been harmed in any way. I think the reason why he didn't, is because of the silver cross I have around my neck, I know this isn't the right time..but we have to do something about all of this. Another reasons Dracula mustn't have hurt me, is because I am expecting.."
Renfield furrowed his eyebrows together in confusion until his eyes roamed down to tm stomach. "A child?" He asked surprised and I forced a smile across my face.
"Yes, this is why we have to stop Dracula." I told him as I held his hand and I turned to face the doctors.
"Whatever plan to have, you can count on me to try and stop Count Dracula." I told them, desperate to put and end to this, to have a normal life again here back in England.
Van Helsing nodded once and took slow steps to us. "In the meantime you'll be staying under my care, Miss. I'll have you meet Miss Mina as well, together we'll try out best to stop whatever may be happening."

Y’all, since I have NO impulse control and I was very worried about spoilers, (don’t worry friends no spoilers from me) I went ahead and finished Dracula the book during this dry, no email period. And when even THAT wasn’t enough I decided to start watching a bunch of “Dracula” movies. So here are my noodle thoughts
The first one I tried was the 1992 Dracula with Winona Rider and Keanu Reeves. I have a whole other post explaining the intense emotions related to that movie but the three biggest opinions is that 1) it is VERY inaccurate to the book all the while acting like it is Very Faithful 2) younger Dracula looks like a goth Willy wonka 3) it was so wildly horny I couldn’t finish it. (I wish we had an alternative reality movie with the same cast that was a good book to movie adaption) Over all the disappointment was so strong that I was wary of trying any other movies
Momma didn’t raise no quitter tho so my husband convinced me to try the 1931 hour long Dracula and this ALSO was NOT LIKE the book but I forgave them for a lot after the drama of the last movie. Honestly for me the best part was Renfield. the actor was old timey attractive, quoted book renfield, and was in general a Mad Lad. I’m sure there are some spoilers to the book because this one covered Main Plot Points but everything is glossed over because it’s only an hour long. Also the actress for Mina was adorable and any vampire violence couldn’t be shown on screen because of the time period, Which I found to be rather charming. That being said their biggest sin was reducing my boi Jonathan to a literal SIDE CHARACTER. He wasn’t even a Lawyer 😭.
I watched Van Helsing the other night, and Hugh Jackman was The Best Part as a vampire hunting goth cowboy. At this point I had given up all hope of any movie being like the book which is good because this was DEFINITIVELY the REMIX. Over all I enjoyed the film (I want to know what shampoo Van Helsing uses because his hair was very luxurious) but it was SOOO not accurate to the book that anyone could watch it and still not have a clue as to what actually transpired in Bram Stokers telling.
It is rather odd to me that Dracula has inspired SO MANY MOVIES and yet as far as I can tell no one has sat down to create an accurate movie (or mini series). On one side the variety of movies is fun (I’ve seen Dracula untold and like it, though again it’s a very different retelling of Dracula) but on the other hand would it kill the directors to leave Van Helsing a middle aged man, have all three suitors, make Jonathan an ACTUAL MAIN CHARACTER, quote the book dialogue for more people then Renfield and let the horror slowly creep over everyone instead of investing in jump scares and crazy theatrics? Basically I want the people who made the six hour BBC Pride and Prejudice (that was faithful to the source material) to make a six hour Dracula (equally faithful to the source material 😂. )If anyone knows of a more or less faithful Dracula movie please let me know.
