zapsoda talks about one song from a musical he hasnt seen for a reaaaaally long time

wishs villain is a tragedy in every way. his song is. bad. (standard for the movie imo) but they way in which it wad bad enraptures me because beyond the writing itself, the performance itself is hollow.

youve heard the cliche, in musicals, characters sing when their emotions are too strong to be conveyed through words. but this guy doesnt seem to be conveying fucking anything.

uhhhhh hes selfish? i think?????? he is so empty and dull and devoid of personality. he just sounds vaguely condescending.

one criticism ive heard a lot is that the (pop) songwriter and producer duo were writing generic marketable pop songs so they would get radio hits like that one track from encanto. and i can fucking see it!!!! the appeal of musicals is how personal the songs are. the appeal of pop music is the opposite! musical songs can be relatable but when they are, its more personal, because they are *always* about very specific situations in stories which can then be applied to the real world.

in the lyrics he talks a lot about what he is? i guessss? (which. cmon guys. show dont tell) but its so fucking vague. does he even mention wishes once???? i thought that was like the whole point of his role in the movie? some shit about wishes? like at that point what is the point of including this song in the movie.

yes, villain songs are typically "i am" songs, but they do far fucking more than just tell you the villains main personality traits, thats something youre supposed to convey through their actions. typically, they are supposed to give you a deeper look into the character!

"poor unfortunate souls" is about how ursula portrays herself as a benevolent do gooder but actually just uses vulnerable people for her own benefit. "be prepared" is about scars evil plot to usurp the throne. "friends on the other side" is about faciliers curse shit.

this song could most accurately be compared to gastons song (is it just called 'gaston'?) but the mob song filled in for what it didnt provide, and "gaston" at least had the decency to be an entertaining and audibly enjoyable experience!

this is none of those. i guess it tells me about the character???? vaguely???? its not entertaining because its boring and repetitive, and it sounds like shit!

whats worse is the villain himself sounds bad. and i checked! chris pine can sing! he was in into the woods! whoever directed him just failed him miserably. i get this very strong impression that the song was not written with him or his character in mind.

back when the movie had just been like. announced. i heard rumors about him being kind of an ableist stereotype of a narcissist and i cannot confirm or deny that (havent seen the movie) based on testimony and what i have observed myself, he doesnt seem to have much of any character, let alone one that is exaggerative or stereotypical. he doesnt even seem to have much of a motive. he just wants whatever is convenient for the plot and does whatever will effectively move the plot along. (from what i fan tell)

for me the tragedy is that he is a disney villain. i love disney villains okay there hasnt been one and a while and he was created to bring that archetype back. hes an evil king! except hes not. hes just some fucking bland empty nobody. and yet the animation in the music video is so lively. its gorgeous. he moves so dramatically, his body language screams personality but his words, his design, and his actions do not.

clearly the people who worked on the movie are extremely skilled in what they do in a vacuum, and yet somehow they came together to make a really lame and boring end product. which i suspect is largely a result of the big faceless execs at the top of it all, wanting to make the safest and most marketable product imaginable. as opposed to, yknow, a work of art.

#i will never disparage the artists themselves especially visually. ive seen a lot of complaints about it but i really like it #the relative simplicity in terms of shading and depth reminds me of nimona #gives it a sort of storybook quality (just based on what ive seen)

Okay don’t get me wrong the good omens fandom is a dumpster fire of racism and transmisogyny BUT you have to appreciate the fact that a miniseries based on a single novel with less than 300 pages beat out the soulless cash-grab giant Marvel for Fandom of the Year

Thoughts on The Lion King musical nearly 25 years in

Something about the return of Broadway has made me want to resist long runners. I've seen The Lion King once when it was running at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas back when theatre thought it could turn Vegas into ~The Broadway of the West~. (That did not go as planned lol). I thought it was pretty but not much else but I was at my most pretentious then so I don't think I engaged in good faith. Still cried at Circle of Life though. It's difficult to engage with because it is the most commercial theatrical property in the history of the theatre. Like in human history. That's not hyperbole. It has grossed more money than any ENTERTAINMENT venture ever. Not just theatrically speaking. In the history of entertainment. Worldwide, there are 8 productions running as of writing. 8 productions that nearly sell out nightly. You do the math. The Minskoff Theatre, where the flagship production is currently running, is a roughly 6 story high complex ( the orchestra seating begins on the THIRD floor) overlooking times square. A giant digital billboard playing McDonalds commercials takes up all of the window space. I had McNuggets bigger than my body assaulting my eyes during intermission. This is as commercial as it gets.

And yet this commercialism is directly at odds with what I saw. It hit. And it hit hard. It isn't just a cool production. It is beautiful. And more importantly. It is incredibly artistically intelligent. The way Taymor highlighted community, grief, triumph, and humanity into it is. Astonishing. I haven't seen Ragtime in person yet so I will wait to comment on whether it was the right winner. But was this production deserving of best musical? (Which as a reminder is a cumulative award). Absolutely. A critic said there is absolutely nothing like it and they were right.

I've been mostly seeing plays since theatre came back but the last musical I saw was Hadestown. So myth is on the mind. And, this could be me projecting, I was so shocked by how the musical spoke to the universality of myth and how we respond to it. The Lion King is a crossroads of so many cultures and properties: Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era, the traditional Zulu culture in which it is draped, the ultimate Americanization that only 1990s Disney is capable of, and Julie Taymor's brain (which, trust me, is a culture all its own). And despite this mash up of wildly different eras the themes are distinctly universal and human. Myth! Battles! Betrayal! Family! Heritage! Love! I was struck by just how many themes The Lion King hits that are common in myth across culture. This is a story that deals with concepts broadly. Not necessarily in an examination of them, but largely in the feeling of them. How large these things feel to a human when they experience these things. Which I find many myths deal with. How universal is legend? Despite the breadth of human history all these things tend to show up in myth and fairytales and, yes, Disney properties.

And that is what makes the staging so brilliant. Taymor staging isn't just pretty it is in tune with the largeness of the experience of the characters. It is grand. Unrelenting. It revels in its largeness because that is one of the key aspects of the story. And god what a production. We see many other spectacles. Many other good and intelligent ones! But nothing will ever be quite like The Lion King. The Circle of Life made me cry. Again. No video really prepares you for it. Raiki's voice piercing through the silence. The rising of the paper sun. The elephant. The rise of Pride Rock through the ground. And many many directors think that people think its cool just because the puppets go through the audience. And it is neat. But what brings people to tears is that not only is The Circle of Life about a gathering it is about a community. And thats the impact of the amazing puppets through the audience. We are also gathering along with the characters. Thats why it doesnt feel like a gimmick like it usually does when actors ask us to clap along in the audience. And, again not hyperbole, one of the best opening numbers theatre will ever see. The fabrics. The costumes. Even the small effect like scar snatching the mouse. And of course, because of the post covid excitement the cast is giving 110%. Adrienne Walker killing Shadowland (my fav song in the show) was a particular highlight.

The Lion King film is far from my favorite Disney property. It's fine. But the way the stage version captures the emotion of the piece. The beautiful interludes of Zulu music. The way the grass moves and the animals hunt and the power of the scenes where Rafiki mourns and Nala solemnly vows to leave and find help and the tears streaming from the eyes of the lionesses and Mufasa's face assembling in the sky. Myth. Emotion. And, most importantly, the moment where Simba's foot touches Pride rock as king and the orchestra and chorus explode in triumph. Chills and tears again. The script is not the best, but these moments would not exist unless they were thought out. It is better than it is given credit for. Of course the show fails when Disney takes over. Zazu's cringey 4h wall breaks. Scar's terrible dialogue. THE HYENAS. The evening has its fair share of difficult moments to get through. What the fuck is that Timon waterfall sequence? Still. It's thrilling beyond belief. And it is such a celebration of an experience only the theatre can provide! Every element, for the most part, is working in tandem. Even the imperfect script. It is both down to earth and at home and larger than life. A difficult thing to achieve.

An accomplished piece of art becoming the Disneyfied behemoth of capitalism is a difficult thing to contend with. And it is one of the contradictions you just plain have to sit with to enjoy Broadway theatre. I really like The Lion King. It is a genuine achievement. Despite what the McDonalds advert might have you think.

updates and descriptions.

hey. it’s been a while since i posted on here.

there’s been a shit ton of changes in my life and i wouldn’t have it in any other way. people have come and go, but there’s so so many people that stayed. i didn’t ask them to stay, they stayed on their own.

as much as i would love to tell them, “don’t leave my life. you’re too important for me to lose”, i feel like they already know that through my actions and my kindness towards them.

first off, there’s my brother. he’s 27, and we’re at least a decade apart in age. but mentally and emotionally, we’re the same person. the first time he and i met, he was still a teenager and i was a baby. since then, we rarely interacted but i already knew, somehow, that he was going to be my favorite kuya. 2018, when my dad passed away, he stepped into my life as the guy that i could depend on and look up to. i’m actually an only child, so i didn’t know what it was like to have a sibling. since he stepped into my life, even when he moved to la and back here in sj, we’ve been inseparable.

every day we interact, through instagram dms, discord dms... and we hangout almost every weekend now. even through quarantine, we’ve been hanging out. i know what you’re thinking. what’s a 17 year old hanging out with a guy who’s almost 30? well, let me answer that. he saved my life. he kept me from ending my life due to depression over the trauma that i suffered when my dad passed away. apparently, i saved his life too.. he went through a rough breakup and he was falling apart. his siblings did their best, but i truly felt that i, a teenager, should step in and be the little sister that he never had. i introduced him to my group of friends, who i now call my siblings too, well. except for the guy im kinda dating, but that doesnt matter in this paragraph.

i wanted him to experience the last few parts of my childhood before i become an adult, since he, unfortunately, had to miss out on most of it. my friends and i love him very much and the fact that he’s now so comfortable with them, means everything to me. i love him with every part of me, and i’m thankful for everything he’s done for me. from getting me food, to giving me his old pc, to letting me spend time with him on the weekends, to letting me bother him so i could rant, to spilling all the tea with him, all that jazz.

second, there’s my older sister.

she’s a couple of months older than kuya. it was her birthday recently and she and kuya spent the night here at my place. instead of sleeping, kuya and i were laughing at the most random shit, and ended up getting mcd’s and starbucks at 6am. meanwhile, ateh was knocked the fuck out on the living room couch. i helped take care of her with the best of my abilities and im glad that i was able to keep her happy and safe.

she and i share a huge love for disney and it’s a huge goal for us to be able to go to disneyland together. she has this laugh that is so contagious, you wouldnt be able to stop laughing around her. like how some of my friends describe me, she’s literally a ball of sunshine. she’s the dorkiest person i know, and i can obv relate to her in so many ways. although there’s not a lot of things i know about her, i can proudly say that she’s my favorite ateh. i want to get to know her more, and i always want to hangout with her when she’s available.

third, there’s my other two older sisters.

even though we’re a year and a couple days apart in age, i love them with everything. there’s the bird lady and the cat lady.

the bird lady is older than the two of us, and she’s, different. she’s the kind of person who’s closed off to so many other people and she doesnt get the chance to experience many things that most people my age. most of the time, she’s reading or gaming or drawing, and i find it interesting that she can keep herself entertained most of the time. she’s so different from everyone else, yet she let me into her life and allowed me to be there for her. she’s strong. she’s beautiful and she doesnt know it yet. i want to be there for her when she becomes the person she wants to be.

she and i met in my freshman year in choir. she was already in concert choir two, and both choirs merged together for a concert song. when i first saw her, i may or may have not had a small crush on her. she doesnt believe me when i say that, but oh well. we ended up officially meeting in my sophomore year when i join her in concert choir two. i learned about her boundaries and i got to know her more when we were placed in the altos section together. the day when i started to really become friends with her, was when i joined a discord server with a bunch of other people that i was friends with in april 2020. it’s been over a year of me being in that server, and after so many obstacles, i get to call her my sister as well.

in that same server, i got to meet the cat lady. she’s the witch in our friend group and she is so fucking hyper. in a good way. when i first interacted with her, i was like, “damn shes loud. i like her”. i got to know her, i became friends with her, and now i can call her my sister as well. we never met in person up until halloween 2020. apparently she met the bird lady way before i joined the server. since we met in person, i also got to know her mom. she’s strict, but she’s a very sweet person as well.

the cat lady is a person who would do anything and everything for her friends and family no matter what gets in her way to stop her. there are many many times where i want to say that i proud of her for everything that she’s done already. but i feel that she already knows that. i know she knows that i love her. she’s someone that i want to protect, to guide her through the hard shit, to be there for when she falls apart.

and then there’s my little brother, my bunso.

he’s something else. he’s weirdly one of the best people that’s stepped into my life and somewhat changed me for the better. he and i go to the same school, and i’ve seen him in marching band. but get this, we never met until we interacted in the discord server. we’ve seen each other but we just never met. since i met him, i got to meet him in person halloween 2020, along with the cat lady. there’s honestly not a lot that i can say about him, since i still have yet to get to know him more, but what i can say is that i’m glad that i can call him my brother. he, along with everyone else i mentioned in this post, is someone i want to always be there for no matter what, to support and love through everything.

here i am now. showing you that i appreciate every single one of you. thank yu for coming into my life and making sure that i dont fall apart. thank you for making laugh and smile and feel complete. thank you for keeping me safe in your hearts, and trusting me to do the same. thank you for hanging out with me, for interacting with me, for meeting me and seeing me as a good person. thank you for keeping me in check, making sure that im okay, that i at least laugh once or more throughout the day.

The beginning of the story will be based off the Disney movie fox and the hound. Stiles' mother hides in him in some tall grass on the Hale territory when hunters are after her. Stiles is a young werefox at the time doesnt know whats going on. Derek, a young wolf finds Stiles and takes him to his mother. They take Stiles in and raise him as their own. This will be a sterek story. All werewolves and werefoxes can shift into full form. The story will have similarity to the show teen wolf but not everything will be the same..also if you have yet to watch the show there will be spoilers. The beginning of the story Stiles will only be age 6 and Derek will be 9. Sadly I don't own Derek & Stiles or any other characters that will be used. You can finally watch Captain Marvel at home

Hi there Captain Comics RNR here finally saw Captain Marvel, it finally made its way to Blu Ray/DVD/Digital HD/4K Blu Ray, whatever platform you want to see it on today 6/11/19....its out. If you are a big Marvel chances are you have already seen it, if you are someone who doesnt like to pay those outrageous movie theater prices and would rather see a movie in the privacy of your own home where you can pause it to go pee like me, then maybe you havent see it yet...But I finally saw it, and my bladder was comfortable the whole time. I can understand some peoples criticism’s of the movie. It does not do anything new, its pretty much a basic formula driven Marvel film, thats whole main purpose is to set up Avengers Endgame. I dont know why I anyone would criticize the movie for this when everyone knew ahead of time thats exactly what the creators of the film were trying to do. I hear some say DC did a better job with Wonder Woman then Marvel did with Captain Marvel. Perhaps that is true, but Marvel is not DC and DC is not Marvel. Undeniably we will compare the two companies, but one of them is owned by Disney and Disney is all about the brand. Brands and formulas almost go hand in hand, brands dont normally take chances. For business’ chances can either mean a big pay off or a big loss at the box office. Captain Marvel is a safe film, its entertaining, its fits in well with the other Marvel films. It may not be as inspiring to young girls as the Patty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman but man oh man does it give what Marvel fans have always expected from Marvel movies. I give it 4 out of 5.

How Josh Wakely landed the Beatles, Dylan, Motown and more

Could I please have a knife and fork, he asks the waiter as we take our seats in Mr Wong, a bustling, upscale modern Chinese restaurant in a converted warehouse in Sydneys CBD. Even as the words are leaving his lips, he knows theres a good chance theyll end up in print. I knew the risk I was taking, he says. He pulled the same stunt on his first date with the woman who was to become his wife. Shes a human rights lawyer and I was a semi-employed screenwriter and I went for the knife and fork. And how did it turn out? I got a second date, but it still burns her, he says. At least it wasnt a spoon. Wakely is quite happy to tell stories against himself. Hes proud of what he has achieved that his success allows him to order the spectacularly good salt-and-pepper Balmain bugs at this restaurant whenever hes in town, for instance and he has ambitions to achieve a lot more. But as a boy from Newcastle, he also knows it doesnt do to get ideas too far above your station. His parents were, comparatively speaking, quite posh his mother was a social worker, his father a teacher but the town in which he was raised was dominated in every sense by the steel plant, at least until it closed in 2000. Everyone was employed in BHP and then everyone wasnt, he says. It was a very working-class world and thats still the world I feel most comfortable in. And yet the one thing I could do was write, though I didnt really know what to do with that.

The salt and pepper Balmain bugs are a highlight.Credit:Louise Kennerley He lasted just five weeks in an arts-law degree at Newcastle Uni his brush with torts was cut short when he rocked up to class dripping from the surf, only to have his tutor tell him, I dont think youll be a lawyer before decamping to Sydney with dreams of making it as a writer. Some good reviews for his 2002 play Woomera in which he also starred as a young detention-centre guard helped earn him a place at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, even though acting wasnt his primary interest. So I rang up the head of WAAPA and said, Ill come to your drama school, but I want to be a writer and director, he recalls, laughing at his own chutzpah. He says Im the only person whos ever rung up and negotiated. The tyro writer did all the acting and dancing expected of him even though he wasnt particularly good at it. Then he would go home and write for four or five hours, every night. By the time he left he had enough work under his belt to convince a series of producers to pay him to write screenplays none of which ever made it to production, he says, because they were just too ambitious for Australian budgets.

But if he was guilty of thinking too big back then, Wakely has zero regrets. There is great power in being wildly naive, he says. Unquestionably, though, his most pie-in-the-sky idea was to go after the rights to the Beatles catalogue with an eye to turning their songs into an animated childrens series.

The bill, pleaseCredit:Karl Quinn Beat Bugs has recently produced its third season for Netflix, won him a screenwriting Emmy, and spawned three albums of Beatles covers by the likes of Sia, Pink, Rod Stewart and The Shins. Next year, a live version is set for an 80-city tour of the US and Canada. It's fair to say it's been a hit. But for a long time after Wakely and his wife moved to Los Angeles about a decade ago, it was just another wildly ambitious plan seemingly destined to go nowhere. One day, Wakelys worried father-in-law, visiting from Australia, tapped on the door of the garage where he wrote and asked what his back-up plan was if he didnt manage to land the Beatles rights. Ive got a good idea for Bob Dylan, came the reply. His father-in-law closed the door, shook his head in despair and walked away. Now I look back on it, he was the sane one, Wakely says. I was insane. When he finally got a chance to put his idea to Sony/ATV, which holds the publishing rights, Wakely rocked up with a demo recorded for $200 by his old mate Daniel Johns in one hand and a pitch document hed put together at a local printing shop in the other. The meeting didnt go well. For some reason, he was made to stand on a cushion, and its very hard to keep your status on a cushion. Then one of the executives fell asleep while Wakely was talking. Worst of all, when he hit play on the stereo it didnt work. And I just remember thinking, I am f---ed. It could have been a fatal blow, but as I left one of the guys there said, Hello, Goodbye would be a good song for children. That was enough. For Sony/ATV, the appeal of Beat Bugs lay in exposing the music to a generation that might otherwise never hear it. It refreshes their catalogues, it keeps them pertinent and present, Wakely says. If you refresh it, it stays in the culture. Presumably there was the small matter of a significant sum being handed over too? To be clear, I think the Beatles were fine without me, he says. I dont think it was ever about the cash. They made the cash long ago. Once he had the rights, everyone wanted to talk to Josh Wakely. In the weeks after, it was all expensive cars coming to take me to meetings at Disney and Dreamworks, he says. But while being feted was nice, he realised that if he signed with one of the majors hed get the bungalow and the credit but he wouldnt be making the show himself. So instead he went with Netflix and the Seven Network in Australia. I came back to Sydney to set up an animation company, which was its own epic journey. It was as hard, really, as securing the Beatles rights. Wakely is a restless spirit, though, and long before the first season was in the can he was onto the next thing. I kept saying to them, You know when I get the Beatles rights then Ill ask for Motown, because that will be electrifying for children. They just thought that was part of my stand-up act. And then Beat Bugs had success and I went back and reminded them. [embedded content] He landed the Dylan catalogue too he even spent a couple of hours in the presence of the great man, an experience he describes as sacred and Universal has given him access to its entire repertoire as he looks for ways to tell stories about the songs, or the stories behind the songs. Because that, really, is his thing. For now at least. When he got the go-ahead to do Beat Bugs, he says, Id never directed a frame of animation and Id only written one childrens script. But I get how music works with storytelling and I took a lot of confidence out of that. Now his slate also includes projects with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, and a project called 27, based on the mythical age at which so many rock stars have died. He wants his company, Grace, to develop into a fully fledged production house, ideally based in Australia. The creative talent is here, he says. Its just a question of whether the resources and infrastructure are here and if youd get the blessing [from the studios in LA] to do it here. Theres no knowing how much of this he will be able to bring to fruition, of course. But on the evidence to date, youd be mad to rule out the possibility that he might just pull it off. At any rate, all he can do is ask for the chance to try. The odd power I take into those rooms is a sense that I shouldnt be there anyway, the kid from Newcastle says. So what have I got to lose? Friday Four Play: The “Big FAANG-y Teeth” Edition

Before we get started today, I want to remind you that Great Stuff will be closed on Monday, January 20. It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the market is closed. I’ll be enjoying my day off, and I suggest you do the same!

With the pleasantries out of the way, the talking heads on Wall Street are trying to scare you again.

Yesterday, we covered the latest “clear danger sign” on how overpriced initial public offerings (IPOs) cost investors lots of money (Duh!) and how this would end the bull market (it won’t).

Today, Credit Suisse has a list of “10 possible shockers for 2020” that could end the market as we know it. I have to hand it to Credit Suisse — that’s a really catchy phrase. And it covers all the bases too. Everything from China’s “triple bubble” to a U.S. market melt-up and crash to a European credit crisis … it’s all there.

And it’s all hype!

These types of articles are the financial world’s “reality TV.” There’s just enough “reality” in them to pique your interest, but they’re ultimately scripted entertainment. They might as well predict an asteroid impact, the arrival of the singularity or alien contact.

However, these articles aren’t completely worthless. The fact that enough bull market skepticism still exists to elicit such articles is a very healthy thing indeed.

Think back to 1999 and 2007…

Do you remember any hint of negativity before things went horribly wrong? The bears were all but silent, weren’t they? In fact, the financial media in both of those periods were ridiculously, over-the-top bullish. The mere suggestion that something was wrong was enough to get you more than a few sideways looks and a heavy dose of the hairy eyeball.

So, if you really want to know when the bull market will end, take a look around at the major financial headlines. If no one’s worried, you should be. If no one’s predicting doom and gloom, start prepping that bunker. It’s called “the calm before the storm” for a reason.

Until then, let’s enjoy reading all the entertaining ways this bull market is going to die a horrible, bloody death … all while bringing home the bacon.

And now for something completely different, here’s your Friday Four Play:

No. 1: Your Earnings, You Will Not Need Them

I’m sure you’ve noticed, but earnings season is in full swing on Wall Street. There are some really big names on the docket, but next week belongs to Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX).

If you’re interested in the numbers, the consensus expects Netflix to earn $0.50 per share on revenue of $5.44 billion. The Earnings Whisper number (Shhhh!) comes in at $0.58 per share.

Beating expectations by $0.08 per share would be nice, but I doubt that would mean squat to Wall Street. It’s all about the subscriber numbers for Netflix.

The arrival of The Walt Disney Co.’s (NYSE: DIS) Disney+ and the proliferation of numerous other streaming services make subscriber growth more important than it’s ever been for Netflix. What makes this quarter even more crucial is that subscriber growth is already slowing, climbing only 21.4% in the last quarter.

Netflix expects year-over-year growth of 19.2% for the fourth quarter. If it hits that target, things should be OK. Not great, but OK. It’ll need greater growth than that to justify the $17 billion it’s spending on content this year.

All in all, beating or matching earnings expectations and in-line subscriber growth should be good enough for a minor NFLX rally. Anything less, and it’s watch out below.

No. 2: The Trillion-Dollar Club

The trillion-dollar club just christened a new member. Google parent Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) just joined the club after rallying more than 37% off its June lows.

Surprisingly, the company achieved this feat amid rising antitrust scrutiny and founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepping down. Despite these headwinds, analysts believe there’s even more upside.

Deutsche Bank analyst Lloyd Walmsley just reiterated his buy rating, noting that “Alphabet trades too cheaply.” (You can’t triple-stamp a double stamp, Lloyd!)

Now, I like Alphabet’s prospects … but we have to call a spade a spade here. This is an advertising company. Google search, YouTube and even Gmail are all based around advertising income.

None of these units operate without competition. They’re all vulnerable. Even Google search will face disruption if users realize just how easy search is these days (or they actually start caring about data privacy).

Furthermore, I personally have no confidence that any Google product will be around for long. The company has a habit of killing off services that I use, including Google Music, Picasa, Google Cloud Print, Hangouts, Nexus, Zeitgeist … the list goes on.

In fact, Google has killed 194 services, apps and hardware devices.

The problem is that Google likes to experiment and then kill off unnecessary expenditures — after it gets people hooked on those services. With Page and Brin leaving, this should be less of an issue, as these two were infamous for letting pet projects run wild. But I’d like to think that Google users will eventually get tired of being exploited for their data … or at least, I hope they will.

No. 3: Face(book) the Music

Speaking of antitrust concerns for Big Tech companies, Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) is being sued for conducting “the most brazen, willful anticompetitive scheme in a generation.”

Four companies — online social marketplace Cir.cl, identity verification company Beehive Biometric, message platform Reveal Chat and financial services firm Lenddo — are suing Facebook for creating “one of the largest unlawful monopolies ever seen in the United States.”

Boy, are those guys mad! And they have reason. Two (Cir.cl and Beehive) are kaput, while Reveal only survived due to a Rhapsody buyout in 2015. (Side note: Rhapsody is now a music-streaming service called Napster, of all things.)

How is Facebook a monopoly? According to the plaintiffs, the company’s planned integration of WhatsApp and Instagram will achieve that goal. Doing so “would increase the cost of switching to a rival social network.”

To halt this monopolistic activity, the lawsuit calls for CEO and Chairman Mark Zuckerberg to sell his majority stake in Facebook.

Honestly, this lawsuit will likely go nowhere. But we can add it to the “Sue Facebook” list, which includes investigations by the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, the House Judiciary Committee and a group of state attorneys general.

That’s quite a parade, and it begs the question: “Just how bulletproof is Facebook?”

No. 4: The War for Privacy

Right now, Apple Inc.’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhones are arguably among the most secure devices on the planet. But that could all change if President Trump gets his way.

The president has called on Apple to unlock iPhones used by the suspect in December’s Pensacola Naval Air Station shooting. This week, Trump tweeted: “We are helping Apple all of the time on TRADE and so many other issues, and yet they refuse to unlock phones used by killers, drug dealers and other violent criminal elements.”

The problem here is a delicate one. Sure, Apple would like to help, and it provided access to Mohammed Alshamrani’s iCloud account and other documentation. However, in order to give the government access to the iPhone, it would have to break iOS and create a backdoor.

Doing so would not only create a backdoor for Alshamrani’s iPhone … but all iPhones. Every. Single. One. Including yours.

Now, if we all trusted our government to act in good faith all the time, this might not be a problem. But we don’t. And we shouldn’t.

What’s more, what if the government “lost the keys,” so to speak? Every hacker on the planet is salivating over the potential for an iPhone backdoor.

This won’t sit well with some of you, but I applaud Apple’s privacy efforts here. I’ve not been a big fan of investing in Apple because it lacks innovative products. But if the company becomes even more of a leading data privacy specialist, that’s a big deal.

In a future where Big Data is the new currency, that is a very big deal indeed.

Inside jobs: What do people do all day?

Last week, I found myself revisiting the fantastic Inside Jobs project from The Atlantic. Atlantic staffers interviewed 103 American workers from all walks of life. The magazine then collected those interviews into a single, unified website. Here's how one of the project's leaders describes her aims: So much of my aspiration for this project was to hear from people affected by the realities that business writers so often cover: what it's like to be a minority in a workplace, or the challenges of working parenthood, or the struggle to remain relevant as an industry changes. And we succeeded in finding those types of stories for example, the three female lawyers who started their own firm, or the coal miner who is adapting to the focus on clean energy. The ones that most stuck with me most were the people in the jobs many consider mundane, such as the janitor who so acutely equated people's respect for his job with their ability to throw away their own trash, or workers outside of the traditional economy, such as the stay-at-home mother who struggled to find her place in a feminist movement that emphasizes womens professional achievements. The Inside Jobs website has a fun layout. Each interview has its own page. From the main index, you can filter stories by subject, or filter workers by industry, age, or other demographic factors. Or, if you're like me, you can simply scroll down and click on any of the 103 worker portraits to read a random interview.

What Do People Do All Day? The Inside Jobs project reminds me of one of my favorite books from childhood, Richard Scarry's classic What Do People Do All Day? I've always been fascinated by the vast variety of work available to people, and how different each job is from every other job. Sure, there's a degree of sameness, but there are tons of differences. As a blogger, I sit at home all day and write. In a way, it's like I'm an artist (but without any sort of actual artistry). Everything about Get Rich Slowly comes from me. If I don't work, nothing happens here. (Actually, this isn't quite true anymore. Nowadays, Rachel manages social media and Tom is handling business development.)This process is similar to the one faced by my friends who are entrepreneurs or professionals. When you own your own business, it's up to you to make it succeed. When you have your own accounting firm or law office, it's up to you to build your reputation and client base.Then there are folks like my girlfriend Kim, who works as a dental hygienist. Whereas I see nobody all day long, she sees tons of new patients every day she works. Her work is physically demanding; mine is not.I have other friends who are band teachers and forensic chemists. I know engineers and salesmen and psychiatrists. I know lost of financial planners, of course, as well as factory foremen and county bureaucrats and hospital administrators. It's just like Richard Scarry taught me when I was a pre-schooler: Everyone is a worker.

And it's just like Brenda Ueland taught me (in a book about writing, of all places): Everyone is talented, original, and has something important to say. Its the personal histories that make up history (by which I mean the grand tapestry of world events). Without your story and mine the larger story doesnt exist. The mass movements of kingdoms and cultures are built on our backs. Maybe that's why I like oral histories so much. Speaking of which, the Inside Jobs project naturally reminds me (and many others) of the work of journalist Studs Terkel. Studs Terkel's Working In the early 1970s, Studs Terkel spent three years traveling across the United States to interview people about their jobs. How would you describe your work? he asked his subjects, men and women from all walks of life. And they told him. Terkel's 1974 book Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do collected 128 of these conversations. Terkel interviewed nobodies and celebrities. He talked to housewives and farm workers and actors and stock brokers and prostitutes. Terkel even interviewed New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael. I really enjoy what I do, she said. I love my occupation. This attitude is the exception, not the rule. I was constantly astonished by the extraordinary dreams of ordinary people, Terkel wrote in the introduction to Working. No matter how bewildering the times, no matter how dissembling the official language, those we call ordinary are aware of a sense of personal worth or more often a lack of it in the work they do. A couple of years ago, National Public Radio spent a week sharing audio excerpts from Terkel's Working interviews. And believe it or not, the book was even made into a Broadway musical adapted and directed by Steven Schwartz, a man better known for his work on shows like Godspell, Wicked, and Disney's Pocahontas. [embedded content] As much as I love both musical theater and Studs Terkel, that looks awful. No wonder it was a flop! In 2009, Harvey Pekar (and a team of artists) adapted 28 of Terkel's interviews into a graphic novel. As a comic geek and a Terkel fan, I loved it. Below are a few scans from my favorite stories. Like most (all?) of Terkel's books, Working is simply a collection of oral histories. The author does a little editorializing and has an unhidden liberal/progressive bias but mostly he lets his subjects speak for themselves. I've read several of his other books, and they're all great. (Every time I revisit his work, I'm reminded that I want to do something similar: I want to travel the country and interview people about the nature and meaning of wealth.) In Praise of the Quotidian Life In the preface to the Working graphic novel, Harvey Pekar writes: I was especially pleased to work on this project because Studs Terkel puts a great deal of emphasis, as I do, in writing about quotidian life. The so-called normal aspect of human existence is underemphasized in every form of literature, yet that is the aspect that most readers are familiar with and can most easily identify with. The style of life I myself am familiar with is the quotidian. But just because one writes about everyday life doesn't mean it's uninteresting; in fact, I find it's most fascinating, because it is so seldom written about. Virtually every person is potentially a great subject for a novel or a biography or a film. Bravo to Terkel for documenting these fascinating lives. You won't find any deep insights into the human condition while browsing the interviews in Working or The Atlantics Inside Jobs project. What you'll get instead is a sort of voyeuristic glimpse into what other people do to make ends meet. You'll learn how some people live to work, and how others work to live. Mostly you'll be entertained by the variety of human experience.

At Hogwarts, student wizards make snails disappear by incanting “Evanesco!” In Hollywood, alt-right wizard Roseanne Barr incanted a racially insensitive and intellectually dumb tweet that made vanish her dignity and career, a high-rated TV show and the livelihoods of hundreds of people.

ABC quickly reacted to her post by cancelling Roseanne, to the praise of many. Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, which owns the network, personally phoned former adviser to President Obama, Valerie Jarrett, whom Roseanne had attacked in her insulting tweet, to assure her that there would be “zero tolerance” for these kinds of statements.

But, as much as I applaud when corporate America ignores the bottom line to fight racism, I can’t help but wonder when zero tolerance becomes intolerance. Jarrett described these events as a “teaching moment,” which means we need to figure out just what lesson we’re trying to teach and what the best way is to get that point across.

This is not in defense of Roseanne. There isn’t one. We give artists a lot of leeway when it comes to what some might deem offensive speech because that’s the point of free speech. She continues to have the right to say whatever she wants. But Disney and ABC are not obligated to suffer the consequences of popular outrage over her speech or offer tacit support of her dimwitted opinions by continuing to employ her.

In her original tweet, Roseanne said, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” In her apology, Roseanne claimed she was making a bad joke: “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me — my joke was in bad taste.”

The Bad-Taste Joke defense just doesn’t work in this case. You can’t have read a book or newspaper, watched a movie or a television show, or just lived in America for the past 200 years without knowing that any reference to an African-American and an ape is textbook racism. Also, her odd, inaccurate and deliberately inflammatory reference to the Muslim Brotherhood to her average Twitter follower will seem like a slam to all Muslims. Roseanne could claim ignorance of all this, but then her ignorance of facts, politics, news, history, art, social issues and pop culture would be so overwhelming as to render her intellectually comatose. This isn’t liberals curtailing free speech, it’s Americans rejecting hate speech.

Should the show have been canceled? I don’t know yet because I usually need some time to process information and think through all the consequences. My immediate reaction, like every person of color, is to punish her by taking away her show. Disney and ABC decided within hours of the tweet to cut off the rotting appendage before it infected the rest of the body.

On the other hand, Roseanne is a very good show. Ironically, it’s one of the most liberal shows on TV, with a clear agenda of tolerance and compassion. To punish Roseanne, we’ve removed the louder, smarter, more influential voice of the show itself. Roseanne’s tweets may give solace to other racists, but they have no real impact in changing minds. The show, which reaches millions, can affect people by showing tolerance and compassion on a weekly basis.

So, are we better off? Was there ever an option of firing Roseanne and continuing the show without her? There is precedent: Two and a Half Men; The Office; Laverne & Shirley; Cheers; and even Valerie, which continued after star Valerie Harper left.

Here’s another teaching moment. Recently, Jason Bateman apologized for “mansplaining” in defense of what Jessica Walter called Jeffrey Tambor’s verbal harassment during the making of Arrested Development. However, a few days later, Bateman appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to tell a funny story about a minor traffic crash he was in with Will Arnett. During the entirety of telling the story, he continued to refer to Arnett as a woman because Arnett acted frightened and weak after the accident. Bateman was clearly joking and meant no harm, but there is harm when your idea of insulting someone is to say they are weak like women.

That perpetuates a negative stereotype to millions of viewers. Most women would feel demeaned by the joke and if they weren’t, it’s because of a lifetime of similar jokes. It baffles me, though, that there wasn’t a peep about it from zero-tolerance Hollywood. Should Bateman be fired? Should the show be canceled? No. Everyone makes boneheaded comments they regret during interviews, myself included. Bateman is one of my favorite performers. I’ve seen most his movies and I’ve written glowingly about his Netflix series Ozark being one of my favorite shows. His comments to Colbert are a teaching moment for him to be more sensitive and a learning moment for the rest of us to think before we glibly joke in a way that enforces harmful stereotypes.

In professional sports, when players egregiously break the rules, they are fined a dollar amount equal to their infraction. The entire team is not disbanded. Perhaps Hollywood needs a similar system. They could establish an advisory board of respected men and women in the business that examines charges of racism or sexual misconduct and makes a recommendation to whatever entertainment organization that is appropriate. The organization would be under no obligation to follow the board’s recommendations. Monetary fines could be donated to support groups that were attacked or offended. This way the punishment is less blunt object and more surgical. It is also more consistent and flexible in determining the difference between zero tolerance and intolerance.

The past year has been a lesson in Greek tragedy as arrogance and hubris have destroyed so many powerful and even a few beloved celebrities. Roseanne is the latest but probably not the last to choke on her own bile. But it is also a lesson in how we react to such people. We have to make sure our righteous swift sword enforces justice rather than wounds it. “Evanesco!” to Roseanne Barr but not necessarily to Roseanne.

Alex Rodriguez is Major League Baseball’s last megastar, and that’s OK

All the way to the bitter end, and it is bitter, the fans want A-Rod. On Tuesday night, with Alex Rodriguez bizarrely left out of the lineup by the Yankees manager, Joe Girardi, Boston Red Sox fans chanted his name at Fenway Park, letting Bombers brass know they made a mistake by sitting the slugger who is (for now) set to retire after one more big night in the Bronx, this coming Friday against Tampa Bay.

Can you blame the Yankees for sticking it to their man, even if he was, at least seemingly, provided with a graceful exit plan on Sunday? After all, were talking about player who tried to torch his employers, the league he played in and the union who helped guarantee most of his 10-year, $275m deal during a scorched-earth defense of his role in the Biogenesis PED scandal.

Except this shouldnt be about the Yankees settling scores, this is about pure entertainment. And with the clock running down on one of the most significant sporting careers this country has ever known, limiting the owner of 696 of the most controversial home runs in history to pinch-hit duty is the direct opposite of giving fans what they want.

Yes, they still want A-Rod, a player who cant hit like he used to, but can still light up talk radio switchboards for hours, rattle social media and fill countless pages with pixel after pixel. In an era where content is in demand like never before, A-Rod has been just that: walking, living, breathing, never-ending content. At the next Baseball Writers Association dinner, they should give A-Rod an award for enriching their lives with some of the most colorful, controversial and polarizing stories theyll ever scribble. He deserves it, because another A-Rod isnt going to walk into the sport anytime soon.

A-Rod is arguably, along with his ex-team-mate, Derek Jeter, the most recognizable name in modern baseball times, and not just to sports fans, to everybody. A-Rod has transcended the game in a way almost all ballplayers dont. In retirement, his place in mainstream gossip columns will continue, especially if he sticks with billionaire CEO and co-founder of 23andMe Anne Wojcicki, who was once married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin: know any other baseball players who have landed in Vanity Fair lately?

The NFL has their Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and until last season, Peyton Manning, while the NBA has their LeBron James and a host of strong second-tier stars. After A-Rod, baseball has nobody on or near that level of national, crossover stardom.

Think about all the game-changing talent that is around the league today: Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, Jose Altuve, Kris Bryant: the list of standouts goes on for a very long time, but theres no one that moves the needle like A-Rod, who is known by 50% of all Americans six years or older according to Q-Scores. Bryce Harper, who did make a late-night appearance with Jimmy Fallon in May, and is by far the least vanilla young ballplayer around, is the next highest at 20% awareness.

Every circuit wants to market its stars, who are the one of the main reasons the Big Four leagues are the behemoths they are today. But in todays sports world, MLB operates well despite the fact that their players have lower national awareness than those from other major North American sports leagues.

The league may wish their national ratings for all-star games and the post-season were rising rather than falling, but in MLB today, all of that matters much less overall. Their digital service, 33% of which was just picked up by Disney, is valued at a staggering $3.5bn, while local television and radio perform well. Their biggest issue is finding a way to maintain the status quo when it comes to the billions of dollars in local revenues earned via cable bundling, where many fans who dont watch an inning of baseball have been subsidizing huge rights deals for years and years.

So really, the model of pushing stars to drive national awareness across Major League Baseball has more or less been on life support for many years, meaning that the days of grandiose ad campaigns, as rare as theyve been, probably went out with Jeter.

As for Rodriguez, well, based on ticket sales for Fridays game, which is being broadcast nationally on Fox, hes certain to go out with a bang, whether he swings and misses or hits yet another A-bomb. As always, A-Rod will make an impact, simply by showing up.

Chicago raced out to a 8-0 mark this month, and their July to August ERA dropped from 4.47 to 1.29, while their OPS popped by over 60 points during the same span. That makes the Cubbies easy winners this week.

How did the kids piss off Goose Gossage this week?

The St Louis Cardinals, down 4-0 on Monday night to the Cincinnati Reds, on the verge of a three-game losing streak, got yet another gift from God. After rallying from a 4-0 ninth inning deficit, Yadier Molina stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and brought the winning home run by any means necessary.

Yadier does it again.

Theres only one thing worse than a bases-loaded walk to end a ballgame a bases loaded hit by pitch. Molina didnt exactly run away from Ross Ohlendorfs offering, and so Goose may be thinking that is one bush league way to win. Then again, hes probably thinking what we most of us think when the Cardinals somehow find a way to rise from the dead, and thats not printable here.

Nine thoughts in order

1) Prince Fielder is retiring from baseball after a second neck surgery forced the Rangers DH to call it quits. Aside from the sad news that one of the games most prodigious sluggers is retiring, it now confirms that then Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski made one heck of a deal when he shipped Fielder to Texas in exchange for Ian Kinsler. By the time Fielders deal runs out, he will have been paid $138m for 34 home runs and a .760 OPS over 289 games. The Tigers will have paid $62m for Kinsler up until 2018, which includes a $5m buyout of the final year of his deal, but doesnt count the $30m they kicked over to Texas to help pay Fielders deal. So for $92m total, Detroit have received an .794 OPS, in over 400 games and counting, with the second baseman currently enjoying his best season since 2008. Theres some relief for Texas however – its reported that some $36m of the remaining deal will be covered by insurance. Fielder retires with the same number of home runs as his father Cecil: 319.

2) Toronto Blue Jays starting center fielder Kevin Pillar is out with for at least two weeks with sprained thumb ligaments, and considering the way he routinely bounces around the Rogers Centre outfield walls and dives into its turf, its a real wonder how he wasnt injured sooner. Luckily, GM Ross Atkins, who is quietly patting his own back this week, has an everyday center fielder in Melvin Upton to replace him. Upton is enjoying something of a comeback season, but has been slow to get going in T Dot now hell get his chance to play every day and make that deal look even better.

3) Tim Tebow is going to try and play baseball, allegedly, and as usual, the media are tripping over themselves to cover whatever he does. Personally, I thought he deserved more of a chance in the NFL after guiding the Broncos to the playoffs in 2011, something a whopping 10,000 Denver fans agree with after signing a petition for his return. Baseball? Well, I was tempted to write that its never, ever, EVER going to happen. Then I saw this tweet from Gary Sheffield:

If you read Sheffields recent piece in the Players Tribune, youd have to think twice about Tebow he demands that you do! So, as per Sheffs orders, Im keeping an open mind, for now.

4) On Tuesday some 15,000 Red Sox fans learned theyd be denied a David Ortiz bobblehead doll, just hours before their game with the Yankees.

I thought the bobbleheads were an inaccurate portrayal of David, said Sam Kennedy said. To go further, I thought the facial features were racially insensitive. Sox brass later announced that fans in attendance would actually be eligible to receive a more politically correct doll with a significantly thicker neck once a new figurine is made.

5) Heres an admission: my fascination with Ichiro was such that I used to write emails about him to friends before every spring. Mostly they rambled on about certain stats on how he missed just 33 games over his first 11 seasons in Seattle, or that he would have almost definitely been MLBs all-time hit king had his career started off in North America.

The first Japanese player to play the field, Ichiro is without question one of the most intriguing players in the long history of the game, and his 3,000th hit is just the latest statistical wonder surrounding his game. Ironically, after all these years of racking up hit after hit, my fondest Ichiro memory remains his throwing out of Terrance Long in 2001.

6) Last month Pete Rose sued John Dowd for a statutory rape allegation the criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor made last year. During a 13 July 2015 radio appearance, Dowd, who lead the 1989 investigation into Roses gambling, referenced Roses ex-associate, Michael Bertolini, who allegedly told him that he ran young girls for him down in spring training, ages 12 to 14. Rose said there was no truth to the statements, which took place before the MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred, elected to not take him off the sports ineligible list in December. Now Dowd is trying to have the case dismissed, a move Roses attorney, Martin Garbus calls a stall tactic. Like anything involving Rose, this latest saga is unlikely to end anytime soon.

7) Yasiel Puigs reputation in Dodgerland continues to spiral. This time the recently demoted Puig was seen drinking beer in a party bus with a bunch of young Triple-A Oklahoma players, some of which were under the legal drinking age, having as much fun as possible inside a vehicle parked in Iowa. Unfortunately for Puig, who is just 25, these completely normal acts, which included singing, profanity and inside jokes, he posted videos of the partying on social media and so now its a full-blown controversy. Management said theyd handle it internally, while Puig merchandise was removed from Dodger Stadium stores. A word of advice to Yasiel: the nail that sticks up will be hammered down.

8) Terry Collins is under more pressure than ever after a shaky week featuring what were, more or less, indefensible decisions. On Saturday, down a run in the ninth and two outs, he didnt pinch-run for the plodding Jay Bruce, who was then thrown out at home to end the game.

Jay Bruce might be faster than anybody on our team for all I know, said Collins. I know he is a good base runner.

Bruce is new to the team, but in the age of information, there is no excuse for Collins: he has to know his players.

Making matters worse, Collins didnt challenge the call at the plate.

Mets fans have been critical of several of Collins moves this season, never mind the fact that he manages a would-be play-off team that hasnt won consecutive games since 7 July. However, few managers have had to deal with the injury issues hes faced over two seasons, and after taking New York to the World Series last season, hes probably safe for the rest of the season.

9) And finally, Clayton Kershaw is still finding ways to contribute in LA, despite being sidelined with back issues until at least 27 August. On Sunday, he led a dugout prank on Alex Wood.

Rather incredibly, the Dodgers have gone 23-14 without their ace in the rotation, pulling even even with their NL West rivals, the San Francisco Giants, if only for a day. The Dodgers bullpen has played a large role in that success they have the lowest batting average against in innings seven through nine in baseball history according to SI a remarkable turnaround considering the fits LAs relief core caused their fan base over ensuing seasons.
