Priyanka Chopra Applauds Dev Patel's Directorial Debut in Monkey Man Amidst Controversy
As the anticipation builds for the release of Monkey Man in India, Priyanka Chopra has stepped forward with her glowing review of the film, praising Dev Patel's directorial skills in this action-packed thriller. Despite the film's delay in India due to pending clearance from the CBFC, Chopra took to Instagram to express her admiration for Patel's impressive debut.
Tumblr media
Monkey Man, featuring Dev Patel in the lead role, was initially slated for release on April 19 in India. However, reports suggest that the film is facing delays due to its depiction of violence, sexual content, and references to Hindu religion and mythology. Nevertheless, Chopra's endorsement adds to the buzz surrounding the movie, which has already made its mark in the US after its release on April 5.
In the film, Patel portrays 'Kid,' a character driven by a quest for justice against the corrupt figures responsible for his mother's death. As the narrative unfolds, Monkey Man delves into themes of faith and societal unrest, offering a gripping portrayal of contemporary issues in India.
Speaking at SXSW, Dev Patel shed light on the film's thematic depth, describing it as a reflection of the complexities of faith and its manipulation in society. He emphasized the importance of storytelling in shaping beliefs, while also acknowledging the darker side of faith when exploited for personal gain.
Despite the controversies surrounding Monkey Man, Patel's vision for the film remains resolute, aiming to give voice to the marginalized and shed light on pertinent social issues. The official synopsis teases a tale of vengeance and redemption, as the protagonist, fueled by years of pent-up anger, seeks retribution against those who have wronged him.
With Priyanka Chopra's endorsement and Dev Patel's directorial prowess at the helm, Monkey Man promises to be a thought-provoking cinematic experience, offering audiences a glimpse into the complexities of modern-day India. As the film awaits its Indian release, the anticipation only continues to grow, fueled by the excitement generated by its stellar cast and compelling narrative.

“Monkey Man” was shot and completed in 2021, and Netflix soon after acquired the rights for around $30 million, but it’s been on the shelf for three years and they‘ve all of a sudden decided to get rid of it? What gives? It turns out, according to an in-the-know source, that it was the portrayal of a fictional right-wing Hindu Nationalist character in the film that worried Netflix about their future dealings in India. And even though they had paid more than twice the production cost, they decided to give the film back to the producers, which is what caused the long delay. Universal and Peele eventually took a particular liking to the film, so much so that they suggested possible editing changes and delayed the release until what they thought would be the right date. It’s as simple as that. In the end, it was all about politics and optics for the streaming giant, especially since India has become the current top growth market for Netflix. Co-Founder Reed Hastings has mentioned that a majority of the service's next 100 million subscribers would most likely come from India.
Universal/Jordan Peele's "suggested possible editing changes" in question:

I think it's time to gush about Monkey Man.
From a practical standpoint, you can't not talk about this movie without mentioning John Wick. Monkey Man itself understands this, going so far as to itself namedrop the Wick films in the beginning of the movie. Yet the movies are very different.
John Wick is in essence a modern neo noir, minimalist in everything but number of sequels it greenlights. It's slick, well executed, and responsible for resurrecting a genre that previously belonged to Vin Diesel's lower quality projects. It fully deserves its flowers, but ten years on it's time to raise our standards for a good action film. By all metrics, Monkey Man should be that movie.
Monkey Man is Joh Wick but grittier. It's action elevated. It's downright gorgeous. It's Dev Patel's directorial debut. It's a social commentary on inequality and fascism. It's Dev Parel Shirtless because he knows exactly what we want. It's the best release of the year as of the time of this writing. It's a movie you should go see.
Monkey man is a movie that asks "what if modern action movies had pathos?" It's gritty, the tale of a kid fighting his way up from the gutter to the penthouse (literally) in his quest for revenge against Hindu Fascist leadership. And it rips. Not since Mandy have I seen a revenge film so beautifully and profoundly depict violence. This is an altogether beautiful film and it never misses a chance to try and make things as beautiful as Mr. Patel himself.
An important note is that the film focuses heavily on Hindu Fascism, and was almost denied release on account of this. As of the writing of this filmpost it still has not been approved for release in India by the state censors, and that with significant edits already having been made to the movie for its general release. Even yet, it's a poignant sociopolitical critique of the Indian government and the intersection between religion and government oppression. Also Dev Patel bites a guys nose off.
Amazing film. Must see. Highly suggest seeing it as soon as possible. Do it for Dev.

What an achievement for Dev Patel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MONKEY MAN is lit, it's fire, it's bananas
Tumblr media
it's a wild action, vibrant, brutal action flick that is right up there with the best of the best.
It's very easy to compare it to the JOHN WICK film (the JOHN WICK stunt team was to do the fight choreography but in one of the multitudes of bad luck that happened to the film during production namely Covid 19, but including the studio going bankrupt, Patel's gaffer dying from a heart attack, losing the location he scouted for four to five months, having to move the shoot from India to Indonesia, thus losing much of the production team and their equipment and Patel breaking his hand on his very first stunt, and injuring his foot when a stuntman stepped on it) Patel lost the stunt team), and while Patel has said his influences were bombastic Bollywood action films and Korean revenge films; for me, not as versed in those films, an easy reference is THE RAID. So if you like that brand of action, you would love MONKEY MAN.
What I especially loved is that after the first act the action levels out, which is great because when it is incessant (as I found JOHN WICK 4), it's mind-numbing, so with act two, you get breathing room and a deeper dive into the story and it gives more depth to the film.

Saw Monkey Man tonight.
Probably the best movie I've seen in theaters in the last few years. Absolutely stellar.
Can't believe this was Dev Patel's directorial debut. What a talent. What hard work. What dedication.
I cried twice.
Just so happy this movie exists, and that he had the chance to tell the story to despite executive meddling.
