When I was in India, they'd talk about reincarnation. There's a poem I… I read by Kipling…

Truly think Death knows about the Edwin and Charles she just lets them be because they make her job easier by skirting around the bureaucratic nightmare the afterlife has become.

You don't need to watch Sandman to understand Dead Boy Detectives, but I can assure you that if you do, you cry harder and your heart is full of tenderness when Death appears.

Dead Boy Detectives has everything:
Co Dependent queer platonic tough to define Best Freinds who would and have gone to hell for each other. they have an office with a cupboard full of board games, and a long history of Noodle Incident cases of '04, and also a bunch of maneuvers with code names. They are also ghosts who solve mysteries for other ghosts.
One is a sassy well read diva in a stupid little bowtie. he keeps meticulous notes, and went to hell on a technicality. he has no rizz and has a sexual awakening at the hands (paws?) of a supernatural Cat King
the other is a cheerful happy bruiser, the brawn with a pocket demension only he can navigate in his backpack, a magic cricket bat, and wells of anger deep down
they team up with a cool psychic (whos also a pretty tree) dealing with her asshole abusive boyfriend who was literally a demon while also trying to restore her memories (she also has a hilarious hate off off with the nerdy one)
then they add a sweet shut in who isn't very brave but is very inquisitive and has excellent reading comprehension and is actually the most brave
and their landlady is a hot goth Sapphic butcher who is done with their shit (but not really)
and the main antagonist is a cunt serving witch with an iron cane chewing up the scenery, just camp queen obsessed with Beauty and Revenge as she should be
she turns her crow familiar into an astrology loving twink to honeypot the nerdy one but the crow catches feelings whoops
the cat king who deserves his own mention again. he's here to seduce a stuffy British detective/tease, cause problems on purpose, reluctantly help solve those problems and mostly slut it up.
a bureaucrat learns to VERY reluctantly embrace the beautiful power of friendship after being swallowed by a fish
its set in a gorgeous seaside town with a light house! and a malt shop!
because this is all A Scooby Doo homage!
It's an episodic Case Of The Episode format! with strong serialized elements!
and as if that wasn't enough there's even Death of The Endless.
what more could any person possibly want in a show.
oh and there's a lot of really interesting themes around internalized homophpbia, abusive relationships and trauma and toxic anger and learning to love and trust and help other people again in spite of and because of the bad parts.

Knowing Dead Boy Detectives is part of the Sandman Netflix world, my brain is now primed to try and spot any and all details or hints or connections to the Sandman series haha
Obviously we've got Death (beloved), but I did have a quickly dispersed thought while watching the first episode of Dead Boy Detectives that the boys that unwittingly sacrificed Edwin to hell had some connection with the Burgesses and the whole Magus secret magic club since it happens very close (a year apart iirc) to when Roderick captured Dream. And as we know from Johanna Constantine, that news travelled in magical/supernatural circles. So, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for people in that time who might be affiliated with Roderick Burgess to also have demon-summoning magic books that could easily be stolen by nosy younger brothers who think it'd be fun to sacrifice someone to a demon.
I'm doubtful that's a real connection (more likely my overactive brain making connections where there are none) but it is possible!
Regardless, I'm really digging Dead Boy Detectives.

Yesterday I finished watching Dead boy detectives and aaaaaaaa IT WAS SO GOOD.
I don't even know who mh favourite character is because they're all so funny and lovely, and the plot was super cool. And I was surprised to see Despair there!!!
I'll definitely try and read the comics when I'm able to finish reading Sandman. Really good show, I highly recommend it.

The wedding misadventures of Rick Jones and Marlo Chandler
As the wedding is about to begin, Hulk and Captain America are helping a very nervous Rick Jones into his tuxedo. While in another room, Marlo is being helped into her dress by Betty Ross and some other women. As she looks into the mirror, Marlo is frightened by the brief appearance of Mephisto reflected back at her. Before the ceremony, there were some surprising appearances such as Northstar who happens to be dating Hector (Hulk's friend from the Pantheon) as well as Rahne Sinclair, Guido Carosella and the unmasked version of ROM Space Knight.
As the wedding ceremony begins, the priest who looks like Peter David reads the book to the bride and groom when they are interrupted by the arrival of Drax the Destroyer. Everyone is surprised when Drax presents an invitation, even though he wasn't mailed one. Nonetheless, they have Drax sit next to Adam Warlock. Next, the wedding is interrupted by the supervillains - Wizard, Absorbing Man, Mister Hyde and the Living Laser. However, they have not come not as wedding crashers, but as attendees, as they too have invitations. In reality, the invitations got mixed up so they were given to the wrong people. The Hulk is about to start a fight with them anyway, however, Doc Samson convinces him to stand down. Rick Jones then agrees to allow the villains to stay for the ceremony. Things get even worse when Kree and Skrull ships arrive with more attendees. The special occasion does little to soften the relations between the two races. When one of the Kree tries to start a fight with Talos the Tamed, the Silver Surfer steps in to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Just before the ceremony is over, it is interrupted by a final surprise guest, Mephisto, who has come to claim Marlo's soul. However, he faces opposition from both the Silver Surfer and the Hulk. The Hulk resolves to handle the situation himself, and seeing a bright light in the sky, he admits his belief in the possibility of a higher power. This apparently gives the Hulk the strength to beat Mephisto back, forcing him into retreat. However, Mephisto gloats how this "defeat" is part of a much larger scheme to damn the Hulk. The wedding is quickly completed and Rick and Marlo are made man and wife. During the reception, Marlo is congratulated by the various guests including the surprising appearance of Death of the Endless, who has come to give Marlo a gift. Once Marlo accepts it, Death quickly leaves. Marlo isn't sure who the woman was, but she and Rick open the box and find a beautiful hairbrush inside.

One thing DBD has got me thinking about is how the afterlife works in this universe now. Because before I figured Death came took your hand and dropped you off where you were meant to go - which was whichever afterlife you believed in or Hell if you were a bad person.
But now with the expansion of the universe we know Death isnt infallible. We know from the original comics that she only lets the boys go because she is dealing with A LOT of crap thanks to Lucifer kicking all the dead folk out of Hell so they are all back on Earth. Edwin and Charles manage to slip past her because she doesnt have time to chase them, but it never seems like she isn't aware of them.
But now, there are plenty of ghosts that don't go with Death. Can they just refuse to take her hand so she just shrugs and says okay go be a ghost bye! Because imagine if that had happed in The Sound of Her Wings. Dream standing there like 🧍‍♂️while his sister is arguing with a dead person who refuses to go with her. Humorous sure but not quite fitting the tone!
Then there is the suicide lore, which griped me actually. Suicide victims dont get to move on? They just wonder the Earth for all eternity? What?? But we see the suicide forest in Hell in Sandman, so suicide victims go to Hell in this universe (which aligns with Hellblazer/Constantine view I believe?) Does Death just not take suicide victims now? Does she get annoyed at people taking death into their own hands? Unlikely.
Then there is the whole Afterlife beaurocracy. How does that work? Is that something separate to Death's realm? Or IS IT Death's realm? Is this beaurocratic nightmare part of the Sunless Lands? Again, it doesn't seem quite right for Death as we know her.
Maybe the Afterlife department is something different. But Death dropped off the axe murdered family at that department for "processing" right? So clearly this department isn't the actual final resting place for the dead. Are the characters like Night Nurse and her superior Death's versions of Lucienne and Mervyn? Did she create them? Or is it totally separate from her?
I just have SO many questions about all this. Please let me know your thoughts or if I missed something.
