In the years 1919/20 Malevich was still deeply engaged in his Suprematism movement during 1919 and 1920. In fact, this period was significant for him as he continued to develop and refine the principles of Suprematism. Malevich believed in the supremacy of pure artistic feeling over depiction of objects in the visible world, and this period saw him producing some of his most iconic works. Between 1917 and 1918 he created his series of “White on White” paintings. Malevich remained firmly rooted in Suprematism during these years, exploring its principles in depth through his art. Seems that there were several versions made (by him personally?). The museum in Amsterdam has one on wood and the museum in Tel Aviv has one based on that one in Amsteram. But the version I mention above is shown in Unovis No 1 Vitebsk 1920 as annex to the facsimile edition and in Jahrbuch der jungen Kunst, Klinkhardt Biermann in the article of Kallai, Ernst (Konstruktivismus p.375) Leipzig,1924 as well as El Lissitzky/Hans Arp (Die Kunstismen /Les Ismes de L’Art /The Isms of Art) in 1924-1914 Erlenbach Zürich München Leipzig 1925 Pp 23 (illustration 45) etc. (More information available)

"Trains across Europe: City breaks in Rotterdam " De Unie Cafe'

Café De Unie is a building from 1925 designed by architect JJP Oud . In the design, Oud used the primary colors, sleek letters and rectangular shapes of De Stijl. The locals didn't react well to this ultra-modern design at the time, the cafe' was closed after just one year and the facade painted over in grey.

The original building was located on Calandplein and was destroyed in 1940. In 1986, a replica of the facade was built on the Mauritsweg.

Oud had in fact became internationally famous as a pioneer of modern construction. De Stijl had also become an art movement of international significance and Café de Unie is now considered an icon of modern architecture.

Images and details from from 'Piet Mondrian: A Life,' the definitive biography by the late curator Hans Janssen, reviewed this week by Peter Schjeldahl in the New Yorker and Maxwell Carter in the Wall Street Journal. ⁠ ⁠ Both reviewers point out that this audaciously structured, 464-page biography reads as swiftly as fiction. "Throughout the … summer he danced several times a week with 33-year-old Lee Krasner and her friends, combing Manhattan until deep in the night for the best places to dance," one passage reads. "One evening in mid-July they were at Café Society Uptown, where [Harry] Holtzman had organized a party to celebrate Mondrian’s recovery from the flu and from his eye problems, which were connected with his old ailment. Krasner adored the handsome, elegant Mondrian and was never far behind him. At one point she was standing beside the dance floor watching and waiting until Hazel Scott had finished singing. The band struck up an upbeat boogie-woogie tune, and she suddenly heard Mondrian behind her shouting ‘Now!’ in a way that could not be refused. The next moment she felt the 68-year-old sweep her onto the floor. Mondrian was a fantastic dance partner. Later Krasner recalled with great pleasure his fabulous sense of rhythm and his love of complicated steps that challenged her to make complex and stylized responses, even when they danced separately, in a 'vertical dance.' Krasner regarded herself a good dancer, and Mondrian turned out to be an excellent partner who managed to bring out the best in her.
