Day Recovering: Day One; Husband?
Tumblr media
The first thing was the beeping, that steady tick. Daylen twitched his fingers and felt cold sheets. 'Cold sheets?' As soon as he opened his eyes he regretted it. The white was blinding like heaven was refusing him. "Ah fuck." His voice was sandpaper.
"You are awake. That is good.” Looking to his bedside he saw Sten sitting in a chair too small for him. “You should get your bearings in order before the nurses swarm you." He grabbed a pitcher and a foam cup, still calm but it seemed so off.
"You're-" He didn't know what he was going to say but a coughing fit made it so he would never find out.
"Do not strain yourself. Drink and I will give you a pen and paper." Sten stood up briefly to station a table with the cup of water and a straw in front of Daylen. His first thought was, ‘I am not a child’ and sat up to try to pick up the glass. A sharp spasm shot through him and he spilled it before he could get away from the table. He stared not understanding what this feeling was. Shame? Violent? Despondent? Sten said nothing, he simply cleaned the water with the bedside tissues and reset the water, straw and all.
When two glasses were finished Sten held out a pad of paper and a pen. Daylen's voice was raw but he decided he could bear it. "I can talk."
"I would rather you not."
What others would say was an insult Daylen recognized as a concern. Sten very rarely insisted against him in recent years. Question, yes. Directly opposed, almost never.
The pad and pen changed hands. "Firstly, do you remember what happened to get you here?"
Driving home from a day of answering crisis calls, taking the freeway a route he did every day and could do with his eyes closed, a long-haul truck was in front of him, then pain, lights, it's silent, it's loud- Maker please don't take me.
With a shaky sigh and an unsteady hand, he wrote, Yes.
"What do you remember?"
The highway and the headlights. As he tried to write the next thing he pushed too hard and dropped the pen. He huffed with glass eyes and picked it up again. Was I the one who swerved?
Sten gently took the pen and laid it on the paper. "No. The truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and leaned into your lane."
"Did anyone die?" Daylen wavered.
"No. Everyone else on the road got out of the way. You were the only person hospitalized."
“That’s good.” Normally Sten would say something to the contrary like, ‘Your lack of self preservation is unmatched.’ but Daylen’s glass eyes were threatening to break. So his mouth stayed closed and a gray hand wrapped the smaller one.
"Oh, Maker!" A nurse at the door screamed.
"And now peace will be robbed from us," Sten said as he watched the terrified nurse run out.
Daylen took his hand back and wiped his eyes like nothing had happened. How long was I asleep?
"Nine days." Sten took the moment of Daylen’s bewilderment to rip off the top paper on the pad and put it in his pocket. "We don't need anyone to see this, especially before I can explain everything to you."
Before that statement could be digested the doctor walked in. "Mr. Amell, you gave my nurse quite the scare." His tone was humorous and light, reassuring. "Don't worry, she's just new. I hope she didn't scare you."
Before Daylen could say anything Sten replied. "She did not offend. But I would ask you not to ask him to speak. He has a pen and paper."
The doctor gave a knowing smile, "Of course." And proceeded to address Daylen. "Your husband has been very concerned. He's here every day during visiting hours."
Daylen knows he must have looked very stupid at that moment. He opened his mouth to speak with a tsk but he couldn't find his words. When he looked at Sten he was as stoic as ever. "This is true." Daylen could help but think, 'What part?' All he could do was give him a confused smile.
The rest of the conversation with the doctor, Dr. Mullins, was swift. Probably because he was in some sort of rush. Sten did not talk, only jumping in when the doctor ordered a sedative that came in the form of a needle. The good doctor didn’t notice Daylen’s apparent fear, or simply didn’t care. “I do not think that is a good idea.”
“Pardon?”
“He has a fear of needles. And I will not hold him down so I trust you have oral medicine.” Sten was many things. Blunt came to mind today. A part of Daylen wanted to say Sten was being dramatic and that it was fine. A bigger part of him wanted to make sure a needle never came close to him. So all he did was smile politely and hoped that was enough.
After everything was said and done, and the doctor had left for good that day, Daylen turned to Sten and wrote Husband?
His eyes drifted away as Daylen’s bore into him. “The only ones who could see you were your family.”
You lied to medical staff?
“Yes.”
That’s illegal.
“Yes.”
Daylen couldn’t help but huff in irritation. So I suppose this means nothing to you but I could get fined. [1]
“Kadan, listen-” Scratching paper cut him off.
Don’t ‘Kadan’ me. Why didn’t you just get my family?
“Because they would have let you die.” The simple statement cut into Daylen’s outburst and left his stomach empty. “A family member had to sign off on your final surgery so I called them. They told me to let you die so I  assumed the role of your husband. As far as they know you are dying or dead.”
Daylen had never been particularly close to his family, and when the circle took him they drifted farther apart. They all found some issue with him. Something they didn’t care for. But he never believed they would let him die. After all he did for them, after all the chances he gave them, after all the things he was willing to overlook, after they used his honors after the blight, after he got them higher status and connections, and they would let him die. That simultaneously was too unbelievable and too on the nose.
I’m sorry and thank you.
Sten grabbed the pen and scratched the page. I’m sorry and thank you.
“Do not apologize. My actions were impulsive, brash. I risked your status and I risked my visa. I was wrong and I would do it again.”
Daylen couldn’t help but laugh even when it turned into a coughing fit. Only Sten could say something so endearing in the most obtuse way. But he wouldn't had him any different.
I thought your people didn’t get married.
“We don’t.”
Then you should learn how to play the part if we don’t want to get caught.
“I will admit, it was much easier when you were unconscious.”

Lights-out in Kinloch Hold is strictly adhered to, at least on the part of the mages. Candles are extinguished, spells snuffed out, and if any whispers persist, they are too low to be audible. It is a fragile peace that’s kept, so it is just as likely that a targeted spell will be the thing to silence a troublemaker as the heavy hand of a templar.
To Daylen Amell, however, lights-out is when the fun truly begins.

Daylen Amell, Hero of Ferelden, Warden Commander. Bro wasn't out of the first mission area before he had a body count of like five. Prisoner? Stabbed. Wounded soldier? Stabbed. 100% if he had a chance to accuse a servant of stealing from him? Stabbed.
Bro was a Dark Urge playthrough before anyone knew what the Dark Urge was.

Fell back down the dragon age hole. Decided to try to draw my main two wardens with their LIs. Don’t know how well I did. ^^;
On the left you have Natia Brosca with Alistair and Daylen Amell with Zevran.
I really like their dynamics, Natia being a casual flirt with the somewhat naive Alistair. As well as the very open and flirtatious Zevran appealing to the very repressed and inexperienced Daylen.

DAO - Daylen’s Magic
Tumblr media
When Daylen Amell was little, his parents concealed the secrecy of his magical abilities. Instead of giving him to the Circle of Magi to help control his magic, his parents hired an apostate instead. They couldn’t let their son be taken away from them when he was at a young age. During that time, Daylen was suppose to be in an arranged marriage with the House of Cousland. However, because of Daylen’s magical abilities, the Amell’s called off the engagement. Daylen stayed friends with the Cousland children and only they knew of his secrets. For many years, Daylen has kept his secret even during the time of the Fifth Blight. When he joined the Grey Wardens, he represented himself as a spearman. The tip of his spear was wrapped around by black cloth to conceal a rune stone that helped Daylen control his magical powers. The spear was a gift from his mentor so that other mages could not sense his magical abilities. He could not reveal his powers due to his fear of everyone’s judgement. But there came a time when he had to reveal his power to save those he cared for. In the Deep Roads of Orzammar, Daylen Amell and Elissa Cousland; along with their companions, struggled to pass through the waves of darkspawn on one of the bridges to the ancient ruins. Their numbers proven too great for our little band of heroes that Daylen called them to retreat. During that retreat, an Ogre came forth and injured Alistair heavily; also causing the bridge to slowly break down. Elissa ran back to save her beloved. “Lelianna, Morrigan! Cover us!” Daylen shouted. He too ran back to the bridge to assist Elissa in retrieving Alistair back to safety. He couldn’t leave his friend behind. Before the Ogre grabbed Alistair by the leg, Elissa came in and swung her sword across the Ogre’s left hand. Roaring in pain, Elissa gathered up Alistair onto his feet while Daylen came in to jab into the Ogre’s stomach with his spear. He pushed the Ogre back to give Elissa and Alistair some space but it only made the Ogre more furious. The Ogre swftly grabbed Daylen; crushing a couple of his ribs. Elissa looked back and halts her retreat with Alistair. “Daylen!” She cried out. Elissa couldn’t decide to go back for her childhood friend or continue onward to bring Alistair to safety. A sudden light was casted above the bridge, blinding the Ogre for a limited time. It was Morrigan. “Hurry and get Daylen! I’ll carry Alistair back.” Morrigan grunted. Elissa rushed with a quick nod, hoping she isn’t too later to free Daylen from the Ogre. For a while the light stayed and the Ogre couldn’t see anything. However, it felt a great deal of pain in it’s left eye. Daylen was able to pierce into the Ogre’s eye while being kept hold. The light gave Daylen a chance to attack, but the Ogre’s grip tightened, crushing a couple more of Daylen’s bones. Pain rushed through Daylen’s body causing him to cough some blood. His internal bleeding was getting worse. At last, Elissa rushed through underneath the Ogre slicing pain around the Ogre’s legs. The Ogre slowly lost it’s balance and stumbled backwards. It lets go of Daylen who fell on his side against the hard cold stones. The fall of the Ogre caused the bridge to slowly break further to the point of it becoming unstable. The two wardens must hurry. Elissa grabbed Daylen’s arm and basically dragged him across. Daylen struggled to gather his legs due to his internal injuries, but he mustered his strength to give himself a push. More rumbling occurred and the Ogre had regained it’s balance and stomped onward to Elissa and Daylen. The rumbling caused Elissa to lose her footing. Daylen was useless, he couldn’t move so he thought of nothing else than to use his last resort: magic. Daylen gripped onto Elissa’s arm getting her attention. She looked at him in confusion and saw his eyes glow brightly. “Run.” he commanded. Elissa felt his magic levitate her and she was thrown across the bridge. Sten was able to catch her landing; helping her on her feet. Daylen grabbed hold of his spear to assist his stand and revealed the turquoise gem embedded at the top of his spear. It glowed brightly with magic circling around Daylen and his spear. The Ogre was at first intimidated by Daylen’s power, but the urge to kill him surpassed such fear and roared loudly. Daylen used his magic to make one powerful blow onto the bridge, causing it to collapse. The Ogre’s steps started to fall with each step of falling stone. Daylen pushed himself to turn back and make it to the others before he too is captured by darkness. He could see his friend calling out to him; hoping he wouldn’t fall. Daylen wasn’t going to make it. He was too far into the middle of the bridge and with his injuries, he couldn’t make a jump; but he had to try. Elissa watched Daylen make a leap of faith and almost, just almost; Daylen wouldn’t have made it if Elissa didn’t reach out to him. Dangling against the cliff, Daylen sighs in relief for he survived. However, his companions now know his secret.

happy friday!! For the DADWC, perhaps Amell x Morrigan with “i feel strange when you’re around.” “do you have a fever or something?”, from the idiots in love prompts?
This is my first time writing Origins fic! I've been replaying it recently and romancing Morrigan for the first time. I haven't finished yet but I thought I'd have a go writing these two anyway. Just in something short and sweet to begin with. Thank you for the prompt!
For @dadrunkwriting
He doesn’t mean to fall asleep. In fact, Daylen is surprised when he wakes and realises he’s not in his own tent, and that there is another body still beside his own. He rolls over and sees Morrigan, lying on her back, dark hair loose and fanning across the pillow. He sees that she is awake but the look in those yellow eyes that stare up at the ceiling of the tent is far away.
They don’t do this. Their activities earlier in the evening have become a frequent occurrence but not this, actually sleeping together.  He means to apologise for overstaying his welcome but the words get caught in his mouth and he finds himself instead, just taking in the sight of her in the morning light that filters into the tent.
She doesn’t look back at him, so he’s surprised, once again, when she murmurs, so quiet it’s almost swallowed by the wind, outside, “‘tis a strange feeling.”
Daylen rolls onto his front, propping his chin on his forearms, blinks slowly at her and wonders, “What is?”
She turns to look at him, frowning slightly. “Whatever it is that comes over me when you are near.” Though the way she addresses him sounds almost accusatory, there’s a slight flush on her cheeks and if Daylen didn’t know any better, he’d almost think it a sign of vulnerability.
But that can’t be it. He reaches out a hand, meaning to investigate. “Do you have a fever or something?”
No sooner do the tips of his fingers brush her forehead than she is batting his hand away. “I am quite well,” she huffs. “Physically, in any case.” She seems irritated but for a moment Daylen can’t tell if it's him or herself. He tilts his head quizzically as he studies her.
“Anything I can help you with?”
As she looks back at him, something in her gaze seems to soften. “I think a kiss would suffice.”
That, he can easily do. He leans in and pulls her close, until her bare skin brushes his and her lips are soft and warm against his own. And he thinks then that there might be something to spending the night, after all. He rolls them both over, covering her body with his so that they might make the most of the early morning together.

Days Recovering: Day Four; manipulate, mansplain, malewife
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Daylen being conscious still didn’t mean he was ready to leave as much as he wanted to. And he made every waking moment difficult. Sten counted himself lucky he was finally able to convince him not to get up and try to find something to do for the rest of the day. He was never one to sit still, even more so when he knew there was someone to help nearby. Him being in a hospital was a nightmare for all parties.
He gave the nurses a heart attack, popping a stitch and bleeding on the floor trying to walk around. He passes out during conversations because he was forcing himself to stay awake during the day. And his need to stick his tongue out at every templar who walked by made Sten wonder how he ever survived in the circle. The most relief he’s had was the paper that arrived in the mail.
What’s that?
“It’s my leave approval. A job change on my visa so I can stay here.”
The mage blinked at him before breaking out in a huge smile, stretching the red split on his lip. “Really.”
“Don’t speak.”
Sorry. His chuckle piped down as he wrote more. What is your new assignment?
“Painting.” Such a simple word received the exact reaction he thought it would. “It is a subject I am familiar with. It can be done at home as well. Even sketches can be sold. It’s practical and a good way to make money. Can you stop looking at me like that?”
This was the side of him Daylen always wanted to keep to himself. When he was embarrassed over something small he started explaining himself. As far as he knew he did keep it to himself, the only reason no one else had seen this was because he didn’t care about their perception of him. That fact always buzzed in his head and made him dizzy.
Like what?
“Like you’re going to laugh.” There was a silent ‘at me’.
I’m not laughing. Sten's face didn’t change. I think it’s very thoughtful and I know you like art so I hope you like making it.
The qunari’s shoulders fell, ever so slightly.  “Thank you.”
------------------------------------------
When he first entered the country Sten always thought the pale skin the people of Ferelden had was strange. They looked like a sheet of paper was baked and smoothed onto a small soft creature. Being surrounded by these paper people was something he’d learned to get used to. He wondered when he started to care about the blue spots on this paper person, the red lines and the inside tears. But before he could stop it they were already family, brothers in arms. So he would sit in the chair he asked for because the last one was too small and sit next to the bed of the man he finally got to fall asleep, looking up from his book every so often to watch his chest rise and fall. Watching the splotches of blue turn into purple.
“Mr. Sten, could I speak to you for a moment?” Dr. Mullins beckoned him into the hall with his clipboard. Sten followed the doctor into the hall, careful not to make noise. “Something came up regarding the document you signed.”
“The procedure is finished. I hardly see this as relevant.” Sten’s face did not betray him like his beating heart did.
The good doctor’s lips formed a tight line as his eyes narrowed. “Okay, I’m not going to beat around the bush. You are not married to that man so going forward I can’t legally allow you to sign off on surgeries.”
“I see.” Since he told the lie he knew he’d have to make a cover story, he just didn’t think it would be so soon. “I did not mean to be dishonest. In truth, we never had a moment to get married. Our duties always call us away and I did not understand what marriage was, we do not have it under the Qun.”
“I understand but I cannot allow life-threatening procedures to be done under uncertain authority. You have no authority-”
“Would you let the man you love die?”
The doctor stopped in his tracks and stared. And Sten counted every heartbeat as he waited for the response. “What the hell. Look, I have a lot of patients to get to and not a lot of time. But I can’t know the validity of all of the signatures I get. Understand?” He leaned in and raised his eyebrows. Oh.
Sten let out a breath. “I understand.”
“Good.”
------------------------------------------
The hospital was quiet all things considered. And in that quiet Daylen slept as Sten grabbed his things to head home for the night.  And before he left Daylen started to turn in his sleep searching for something to grab. Without much thought Sten puts his bag down, goes back to his chair, and holds his hand. The turning stops. Everything is quiet, the air is freezing against his skin, and Sten fights the urge to trace the calluses on the small human hand. A minute passes, two minutes pass, twenty minutes pass before he leaves the room. No one but them were in the room, no one to pose in front of, everyone was out in the hall. It was for them.
