Texmexzona: Book 2 of The Lost Dog story by Dawn Greenfield Ireland
While this book works as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading the award-winning first book, “The Last Dog,” to gain the full context of this wonderful story. It’s a lot more meaningful when you understand what the characters have been through as well as the details related to its 2087 setting. Texmexzona is a geographical area that comprises, as the name implies, Texas, Mexico, New Mexico,…

Today, we have our mobile phones and alarm clocks to wake us up on time. But what do people used to do in olden times? Who woke them up?The answer would be, a 'Knocker-up'!
Tumblr media
The knocker-up's used to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and went about the town to wake up the people who requested them to do so.
Some knocker-up's knocked the windows/doors a few times until the person woke up while sometimes they used to just knock 3 to 4 times and go on to wake up the next person.
Until late 1950s in Ireland and England, when alarm clock were expensive, unreliable and rare for the working class, a rather unusual profession called as 'knocker-upper' or 'knocker-up' came into existence.
How would they wake up people ?
A reporter in 1878 from Canada Huron Newspaper reports, that initially these knocker-up's used to ring or knock on the doors. Soon, complaints from the public staying nearby came regarding the loud sounds.
The knocker-up's learnt that people who used to not pay for this were also benifited by the loud sound as it woke them up, for free. Hence they had to find ways to deal with this.
As a solution to this, they started using batons And light hammers to knock on the front door of houses and long bamboo sticks to knock on the windows for those people who stayed on the first floor, it was the sound just enough for the people to wake up without being loud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In later years, a great invention that became a big help to the knocker-up's were the pea shooters. Pea shooter is a toy version of the blow-gun or a blowpipe. The mechanism is simple, a tube is filled with a dried pea grain and air is blown through one end. The dried pea then comes out like a projectile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The knocker-up's used to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and went about the town to wake up the people who requested them to do so.
You can watch this video by Manchester Metropolitan University featuring a knocker-up from Burnley (1946-1949) :-
How did they wake up thier deaf clients?
A sack of grains is attached to a thick rope and bag of grains is hung somewhere near the bed. Free end of the rope hangs on the outside, mostly through the window or the door. When the knocker-up pulls the rope, the bag falls down shaking the floor slightly but enough to wake up the deaf person!
Who hired them?
Technically whoever wanted to wake up used to hire them, in such way a knocker-up used to wake up hundreds of people in their assigned region. They were more popular in industrial and mill towns.oal mine companies and industry owners in London, Manchester, etc, hired them to wake up their workers so that they would come to work on time.
Coal mine companies and industry owners in London, Manchester, etc, hired them to wake up their workers so that they would come to work on time.
Dockers who worked at river Thames needed to be awake early in the morning so that they could load and unload thier cargo in time, hence the job of a knocker-up was a extremely important one.
Famous stories
Granny Cousins:
She was a old woman who used to work as a knocker-up to wake up the workers of the brewery. She retired in 1917 and is considered to be the last of the few knocker-uppers.
Tumblr media
Mrs Bowers:
A familiar sight in Greenfield terrace of Durham County was of the knocker up Mrs.Bowers with her dog, Jack. Both of them gave up thier night sleep by waking up themselves at 1 AM so that they'd be able to wake up the miners on early shifts.
'Beamish, the living museum of North' reports that She even worked in the WW1 days.
Tumblr media
Mary Smith:
She was popular for using the pea-shooter as her tool to wake up people. Mary had 16 children out of which only 2 of them survived into adulthood. One of them was her daughter, Molly, who used to follow her on this job everyday and later on took it as her own.
Mary's family had been doing the job for a long period of 60 years and the pipe used for pea-shooting was a souvenir passed on generation to generation.
There's also a children's book written on her by writer, A.U'Ren.
Tumblr media
Her daughter Molly Moore carried on this legacy for 20 more years even through the times of 'air raids' during the WW1 until the alarm clocks became a fad.
Tumblr media
Charles Dickens's book, 'the Great expectations' also features a knocker-upper as a passing reference.
In those times, usually old men and women were the knocker up's along with them a few policemen also took up the job as a supplementary part of thier existing job.
One incident also narrates that, Jack Paul, the person who found 'Jack the Ripper's first victim 'Mary Nicholes' reported this to a policeman who was on his duty as a knocker-up.
To his shock the policeman didn't bother much to look into the matter just yet because he felt that the job of waking workers on time was much important.
How much were they paid?
A report after talking to a knocker up of North England, Mrs.Waters, says that there was a fixed weekly pay based on how early a person has to be aroused from sleep.
It costed 18 pence (penny), weekly, if a person has to wake up before 4 in the morning.
After 4, a person has to pay a shilling (12 pence).
3-6 pence if a person has to be aroused from sleep at 5 or 6 in the morning. It all varied a bit based on time and distance.
Mrs.Waters says, that she never earned anything lesser than 30 pence in a week and maximum upto 40 pence. Most of her clients were those who woke up at 5 or 6.
In order to remember which house has to be awoken when, in England, they marked figures such as '1/2 past 3', '1/4 past 4' on doors and sideways with chalk. Sometimes signboard were used for the same purpose, it also had information about the knocker-up's and thier buisness.
Below what you're seeing is one such sign
Tumblr media
who woke up the knocker up's?
Many of the knocker-up's in earlier days were nocturnal beings. They used to sleep during the day and work at early dawn hours, even as early as 2 or 3'O'clock.
A knocker-up in the 'Kalgoorlie miner' says, that it is not entirely the truth as he himself was working for 3 other knocker-up's to wake them up before dawn.
A very famous tongue twister was also made based on knocker uppers -
𝑊𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑎 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑎 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝
𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝’𝑠 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟 𝑢𝑝, 𝑢𝑝
𝑆𝑜 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟-𝑢𝑝 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑘 𝑢𝑠 𝑢𝑝 ‘𝐶𝑜𝑠 ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑢𝑝.
The last of knocker-uppers :
It is believed the last knocker up retired from the job, in 1973 in Bolton. Nonetheless, even if in today's date it sounds silly, in those times this job was a respected one.
From the times of industrial revolution to late 1970s, knocker-up's played a significant role in the society. In all walks of life, people were hardworking and dedicated to their work. With such a mindset, punctuality was another important value that went hand in hand.

Proud by Various Authors
A stirring, bold and moving anthology of stories and poetry by top LGBTQ+ YA authors and new talent, giving their unique responses to the broad theme of pride. Each story has an illustration by an artist identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Compiled by Juno Dawson, author of THIS BOOK IS GAY and CLEAN. A celebration of LGBTQ+ talent, PROUD is a thought-provoking, funny, emotional read. Contributors: Steve Antony, Dean Atta, Kate Alizadeh, Fox Benwell, Alex Bertie, Caroline Bird, Fatti Burke, Tanya Byrne, Moïra Fowley-Doyle, Frank Duffy, Simon James Green, Leo Greenfield, Saffa Khan, Karen Lawler, David Levithan, Priyanka Meenakshi, Alice Oseman, Michael Lee Richardson, David Roberts, Cynthia So, Kay Staples, Jessica Vallance, Kristen Van Dam and Kameron White.
Disclaimer: I received a copy free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Two years ago I read a brilliant anthology called A Change is Gonna Come, published by Stripes Publishing and I adored it – it shone a spotlight on some much-needed voices and stories in UKYA. Proud does the same thing as it is full of stories from LGBTQIAP+ authors that fill a void in UKYA (don’t get me wrong, there is some great queer UKYA, but we need so much more!) This anthology is full of so many exquisite stories (and some great illustrations), some fun and loud, but some are tender and quiet. Stories filled with happiness, sadness, grief, romance, triumph, love, and loss. Stories filled with self-acceptance and self-love but also filled to the brim with stories of queer teens surrounded by love. It isn’t a perfect anthology, for example, there were no aro-ace stories BUT it hopefully paves the way for more queer stories in mainstream UKYA. ‘We, as LGBTQ+ authors, know how important it is to see ourselves in stories. If we live inUntitled stories, it means we live in the real world too. We are claiming our space, claiming our oxygen. Since the dawn of time, we have been told in a litany of ways that we are ‘less-than’, ‘out of the ordinary’, ‘abnormal’, ‘subnormal’, or plain ‘different’. We are none of those things. We are gloriously ourselves, and we show the world our glory during Pride. That is why Pride is both party and protest. It’s noisy, it’s colourful, it’s glittery and it’s very, very visible. It’s a statement to the whole wide world that we are here; we celebrate our varied and diverse culture; our history; our struggles.’ - Juno Dawson Proud has 12 different stories from 12 different authors. Stories featuring transgender characters, gay characters, bi characters, lesbian characters, non-binary characters, and it is just so very queer. The problem I have with anthologies sometimes is that some stories are great, and some are just meh. But Proud consistently wowed me with each story (apart from maybe one or two), and it has so many great new voices that I will definitely be keeping an eye on. I’m now going to write a little bit about each story: Dive Bar by Caroline Bird – I’m not going to rate this one because I just didn’t get it. Sometimes I love poetry, and sometimes, I really struggle with it. A definite, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ type of thing. Penguins by Simon James Green – 4/5 – I really enjoyed Penguins. It was such a cute, funny, and heartwarming story about the struggles of coming out – of finding the right time. At times, this story was downright hilarious and at other times, it was super cute and heartwarming. Also features an m/m romance. On the Run by Kay Staples – 5/5 – I really enjoyed this one. A quiet, warm, and tender story about two teens who have won the lottery and have run away from home, one escaping an abusive family and one following the guy they love. It has working-class characters, a non-binary teen, and a lovely nb/m romance. The Phoenix Fault by Cynthia So – 4/5 – a lovely little fantasy story about two girls realising they love each other. As the Philadelphia Queer Youth Choir Sings Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’… by David Levithan – Also, not my cup of tea, I just wasn’t really a fan of the narrative style! Almost Certain by Tanya Bryne – 5/5- I really resonated with this one, it is a sad and tender story about anxiety and grief and art. A lovely little f/f romance and I really loved how anxiety was described in this. The Other Team by Michael Lee Richardson – 4/5 – a really good story about a trans boy and the discrimination and misgendering he faces, but also about the support and love he receives from his football team. I Hate Darcy Pemberley by Karen Lawler – 5/5 – literally, give me all the enemies-to-lovers f/f romances. It’s an f/f Pride and Prejudice retelling, it was funny, entertaining, and heartwarming. I also really loved the little illustration at the end by Kameron White. The Courage of Dragons by Fox Benwell – 5/5 – I loved this geeky story about a non-binary teen and their friends (also their d&d group!) going on a quest to make their school gender neutral. The Instructor by Jess Vallance – 5/5 – This was a lovely, vibrant, funny, and heartwarming story about a girl who learns to drive in order to impress her crush. Love Poems to the City by Moïra Fowley-Doyle – 5/5 – I adored this one. A beautiful story about a bisexual girl in Ireland fighting for marriage equality. Also has an f/f romance! How to Come Out as Gay by Dean Atta – 5/5 – just a simply supportive and beautiful poem about coming out. Overall, Proud is an emotional, empowering, powerful, and important anthology full of vibrant voices that need to be on everyone’s bookshelves.

Meet Your New Favorite Author!
Dawn Greenfield Ireland takes the term “prolific writer” to an entirely new level. No matter what genre you prefer, it’s highly likely she has it in her massive literary portfolio! Most of what I’ve been reading the past few years has been research material. Sadly, I can’t remember the last time I read a novel.
