LIFT - A Musical at Southwark Playhouse Review
🎭 NEW POST 🎭 So excited to have been at @liftmusicalldn's press night. There are so many wonderful things I could say but what I keep coming back to is the richness and beauty of the score. Words simply do not do it justice. You need to experience it.
The first staging of Craig Adams and Ian Watson’s musical in almost a decade is wonderfully intricate and beautifully moving (more…)

Greetings. What can we learn from the Prophetic word? Let's look at Jacob when he prophesied over his children. He uttered a bittersweet prophecy. He saw his future and declared that he was going to be a judge, and in the next verse, he called him a serpent. (Gen 49:16-17). Looking at this, this prophecy was fulfilled to the letter. Let's look at some insights--
Samson was from the tribe of Dan. He later on, became a Judge. (Judges 13:1-5, Judges 16:31)
The tribe of Dan was the first tribe that got into idolatry, and it caused them to lose their place within the 12 tribes of Israel. It identified this tribe with the serpent, who is the devil. (Rev 7)
Take some time to listen to how Samson could have changed his destiny but played around with you. Let's learn from his mistakes and change our destiny for the better. God bless.

UConn Reloads in the Transfer Portal
UConn Reloads in the Transfer Portal
The abrupt and early end to the 2021-2022 UConn Men’s basketball season in the first game of the NCAA Tournament left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth. Yes, it was a tough matchup against New Mexico State, but there were questions about personnel and coaching immediately following the loss. That loss would be getting more airtime today if it wasn’t for an even more concerning trend…

OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH returns for Season 2 on October 5, with three new episodes. Max will stream two new episodes a week until the season finale on October 26.
Teaser trailer, key art, and more info below!
Tumblr media
The eight-episode second season of the Max Original comedy series OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH, from creator-showrunner David Jenkins, Emmy®-nominated executive producer and star Taika Waititi, and Emmy®-nominated executive producer Garrett Basch, debuts with three episodes THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5 on Max. The season continues with two new episodes weekly leading up to the season finale on Thursday, October 26.
Season 2 logline: OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas…they found love. Now, they have to survive it.
Season 2 cast: In addition to Darby and Waititi, season two stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones. New additions joining the ensemble cast include recurring guest stars Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, and Erroll Shand, and guest stars Minnie Driver and Bronson Pinchot.
Season 2 credits: OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH is executive produced by Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi, alongside creator-showrunner David Jenkins. In addition to his duties as showrunner, Jenkins directed the first two episodes of season two. Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, and Antoine Douaihy also serve as executive producers. Season two was filmed in Auckland, New Zealand.

Did you know that February is Jewish Disability Awareness Acceptance, and Inclusion Month? In this month we celebrate Jewish figures who were and are disabled, so here a few of my favourite:
Yitzchak (Isaac): He became blind either from angel's tears falling in his eyes at Akedat Yitzchak, or from old age. Either way, his blindness made him disabled.
Yaakov (Jacob): He was left with a permanent leg injury after sparring with the angel.
Leah: She was described as being constantly crying and having swollen eyes. This can be interpreted as her having chronic depression, which is disabling.
Chushim: Dan's son, who was deaf. He was the one who ended up killing Esav after he tried to hold up Yaakov's funeral.
Moshe (Moses): He had a lisp since he was a child, and had so much difficulty communicating that he needed his brother Aharon to act as a translator.
Ehud ben Gera: A prophet and leader of the Jewish people, some commentaries interpret him as having a congenital limb difference in his right arm.
Shimshon (Samson): Rabbi Yochanan in the Talmud interpreted Shimshon as having been born with a limp in both his legs.
Shaul (Saul): He had severe depressive episodes for which he required David to comfort him with music.
Mephiboshet: Yonatan's son who was either bow-legged or had some kind of spinal injury. He was adopted by King David after Yonatan's death.
Rav Sheshet: An Amora in the Talmud who was blind. He was said to have memorized an immense wealth of knowledge that made his colleagues tremble in awe.
Franz Kafka: A writer and novelist, he suffered with depression and long-time chronic illness from contracting TB.
Judy Heumann: She is one of the founders the disability rights movement. She contracted polio as a baby and as a result became quadriplegic. She led the 26-day takeover of the San Francisco Health, Education and Welfare office in 1977 in protest for disability rights.

‭‭Judges 13:1-5, 24-25 (NIV‬‬). “Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years. A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth. The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean. You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines”...The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.”
“Promises and Expectations” by in Touch Ministries:
“Serving God may not always look like what we expect, but we can rest in His love and faithfulness.”
“In today’s passage, an angel brings good news to Manoah’s infertile wife: She would have a baby who’d be set apart for God’s service and bring deliverance to His people (vv. 1-5). After news like that, she probably imagined that her son’s life would be filled with holiness and happily-ever-afters. And in accordance with God’s plan, Manoah and his wife taught Samson to follow the strict guidelines of the Nazirite vow of dedication. (See Numbers 6:1-21.)
But Samson’s life didn’t turn out the way his parents may have dreamed. Though blessed with a godly upbringing and incredible physical strength, he got involved with women from pagan countries. And he confessed to Delilah, a Philistine woman he loved, the secret of his strength: It was related to the Nazirite vow, which included that “no razor shall pass over his head” (v. 5). Delilah betrayed him by cutting his hair and turning him over to the Philistines. Yet God was at work in all this: In his final moments, Samson regained his strength and fulfilled the promise of deliverance.
The faithfulness of Samson’s parents is a reminder that we can’t predict how events will unfold but must nevertheless hold tightly to God’s promises. Even though our story might not look like what we expect, we can trust that the Lord loves us and is able to work everything for His glory.”

So I was thinking about Julius’ trade, and how Erin’s attitude was basically a mix of ‘fuck those assholes’ and ‘wherever you go…’ Not in a ‘stand by your man’ way, but b/c a huge part of all the Mathesons’ core value system is a belief in family, and family as team (with a healthy dose of sang froid for anyone who fucks with the team/family.) And, along with that, a strong work ethic. So, what does Erin do for work? Is it related to her degree? Future plans, esp in the US?
NB to my question about Erin. In YCMAL, Coach Samson tells Dan about how his wife (yet another Alberta girl! waves) was bored off her ass their first year after is trade from the Flames to the North Stars, because she didn’t have a green card. But I can’t see Don and Susan’s daughter sitting around for a year, so even if she can’t draw a paycheque, I bet she does something. Take up carpentry? Ultra marathons? Conquer human trafficking on the dark web?
Erin has the most Erin of Erin jobs, a job Jared might even be jealous of, were he not, you know, a pro hockey player. She gets to correct people for a living. (She copy edits. She genuinely loves it, even when it's objectively boring subject matter.) It doesn't pay a ton, but it's flexible, which she likes, plus her boyfriend makes a bajillion dollars and she does not have the hang ups about her partner contributing more financially that Jared does. Like, for one: it'd be impossible for her to find something comparable, Julius makes almost eight figures, so why stress about it? And also: she provides quips and companionship. Julius is very lucky to have her.
She does contract work, so it's not as difficult a move as it would be if she had an employer, but the lack of green card does throw a wrench in the works, at least until the Scouts get that all sorted. She plays tourist at the beginning, trying find all the good spots and embrace the move if they do end up staying (and they do, so), and then it's almost a good thing she isn't working, because that's the year the Scouts get their third Cup, so there is a lot of moral support happening, particularly because Julius does not...have a lot of playoff experience, at this point. (They made it one year! Then got swept.)
