Giving Them the Moment: How Our Flag Means Death and it's Portrayal of Black Men is the Most Important Thing on Television Right Now
Note: written April 20, 2022
Media is an incredibly distinct way of communicating. It has a wide reach, and each person has their own interpretation of what they see. That’s the beauty of the medium as a whole. However, there are often downsides, especially when it pertains to the West. In the US in particular, there is a trend within popular media to lean towards propagandization. Whether it’s the idea that communism and socialism are products of the ‘Evil East’ or the lingering effects of the Motion Picture Production Code - also known as the Hays Code, the media monopolies have a firm grasp on what we as a society watch and enjoy.
When you begin to play close attention to how the media portrays Black men, this becomes abundantly clear.
It is a rare thing when we see Black men whose characters aren’t portrayed as being the object nor the perpetrators of violence. In fact, only one mainstream popular show comes to mind: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. But even then, the given circumstances of Fresh Prince revolve around Will’s escape from the violence of the ‘urban’ inner city. This vilification of Black men dates back to the 1910s with D. W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation, and continued into the 1930s, where Black people were often personified as the monsters, representing the ‘exciticism’ of the world beyond the West. It is the ‘exoticism’ that has played a huge part in the dehumanization of Black men as a whole. But as a Black Queer person watching Our Flag Means Death, it is breaking that mold in an incredibly important way.
The Black men in the show are allowed to have fun.
This show is breaking barriers left and right. Of the major recurring cast of 15, over half of them are people of color. It’s overt and unflinching portrayal of Queerness when so many of its older viewers - myself included - have lived through the Bury Your Gays and Dead Lesbians tropes time and time again is overwhelmingly refreshing. Nearly all characters are Queer until proven straight and represent all parts under the umbrella, including Leslie Jones’ polyamorous pirate queen and Vico Ortiz - a non-binary actor - playing a non-binary character.
But in a world where the narratives of Black men are so often framed around violence and brutality, the Black crewmates of the Queen Anne’s Revenge - Frenchie, Oluwande, and Roach - are allowed to be funny and vulnerable. Each one of them is starkly different from the other with identifiable characteristics that allow the audience to humanize them. The trio quickly became my favorites among the crew, with Roach being the stand-out amongst them. Samba Schutte’s often deadpan delivery never fails to draw a laugh from me, in particular the assertion that “meat is meat”. Frenchie, played by Joel Fry, is the quickest on the draw where his intellect is concerned, being posited in the show’s fifth episode as having had a hand in inventing the pyramid scheme while spouting the wildest of conspiracy theories and being afraid of cats (they’re witches, they steal your breath, and have knives in their feet, you know). The softness and constant vulnerability of Samson Kayo’s Oluwande may be one of the most important aspects of the show, as it establishes him as a reliable and trustworthy confidante to not just Jim, but to Rhys Darby’s Stede Bonnet as well.
They exist in their own separate spheres on the ship, going about their own separate business completely unbothered. While it is implied they lead violent lives as pirates, this violence isn’t used to define them as characters. In fact, Oluwande stated that both he and Jim engaged in piracy because they “had no choice”. The brief mention we get of Frenchie’s backstory implies that he lives a life of servitude, though whether that was as an enslaved person or a freed Black domestic worker is not mentioned. While there is little known about Roach so far, it is implied that his culinary skills are far beyond the levels of what is needed aboard a pirate ship.
The friendships and relationships they form within the crew aren’t built on violence either, but on open and honest communication. Most notably, the friendship of Frenchie and Wee John Feeny, played by Kristian Nairn. Fry and Nairn are an impeccable comic duo when their characters become ‘room people’, and the scene where they begin to design their new space is a personal highlight of the episode. Oluwande and Jim’s romance - played to perfection by Kayo and Ortiz - is one that revolves around both characters being almost devastatingly open with each other. Both actors play the emotional vulnerability of the characters well, and it is important to emphasize that it is Kayo’s Oluwande that moves to meet Jim where they are.
While the show allows all its men to show varying levels of emotional vulnerability - an exception being offered to the emotionally constipated Izzy Hands, played by Con O’Neill - there is something so special about seeing that luxury afforded to Black men. This show has, in just ten episodes, has become a game changer for the television industry. It has proved that a show with explicitly Queer characters can become a massive sleeper hit, and that sometimes the best kind of historical show is one that is historical fiction. But it has also proved that you can create a narrative with Black men that doesn’t include their stories being framed in violence or brutality, that they can be funny, charming, witty, vulnerable, intelligent, complex characters with their own narratives that serve a purpose outside of a device of exoticism. It is this rare thing that makes these characters, and indeed the show as a whole, so important to its viewers.
We deserve more vulnerability, more humor, and more humanizing content from these three men, and this show is one that is truly deserving of a glorious second season.

Eggs are then given a totem of undying and a stick, put in a room and told to fight.

Sunny vs Leonarda. Leonarda won. Ramon rushed in to stand protectively in front of Sunny, placing himself between them when sunny was killed. Tallulah* called sunny/Ramon a cheater.

Cucurucho then leaves, and talks to three workers.
Cucurucho: I need the wearabouts of the two missing eggs. No excuses.
(Worker nods)
Cucurucho: they have improved well. The federation will be happy. But they are not perfect.

Conclusions, thoughts, and theories
New info:
- Two unnamed eggs (Definitely A1 and Hope)
- Richas is in group four. Why? He’s meant to be in tallulahs group, but this implies he’s from another batch. Would explain why he’s smaller. Also, maybe why he knows so much about egg island?
- earlier in the stream, there were files for the eggs. Basically barrels containing their assessments and reports on development. There were two barrels labelled ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️(presumably “memories” which is another name for hope) and ▪️▪️▪️ ▪️▪️(egg a1).
My Thoughts/theories
One of either hope or a1 is dead. My bet is on a1 being dead, considering we saw her fall into lava on screen in one of Quackities streams. Hope, or memories, however, has no proof on her status. Aside from that image. My bet is hope is alive. If so, where is she? Are the batches labeled in order, or are they judged by success in development? Which would explain why Richas is group four: he’s considered the worst egg to the federation. He doesn’t back down, he’s reckless, he’s impulsive, he’s against the feds.He threatened Cucurucho. He doesn’t listen to orders. Hes untrustworthy. This is how the federation views him. A1 couldn’t do basic parkour, and struggled to write. Hope? The federation deemed her unworthy.Tallulah was likely meant to be batch 4, considering she was abandoned in the adoption centre just like hope was. But then with Phil’s care, she “leveled up” so to speak.
(it has been pointed out to me that Memories/Hope is actually listed as group 2, which is listed as deceased. Meaning Egg A1 is likely the one who is alive, which will certainly be… interesting, when they meet Quackity again. Poor kid. I’m still holding out, well, hope, that hope is alive somewhere.)
I believe sunny is on thin ice, because of the notes that Cucurucho made in her developmental report.
And where did pomme and Richas go? They were seen in the library where Cucurucho found the eggs, but must have snuck away at some point. I think the fact that they were left behind will have something to do with the rescue mission they’ve been planning for Cellbit and Baghera.

u r the main source for my league visual updates at this point but i know nothing about u so i want to know now. whats ur league playstyle? whats ur favorite skinline(s)? whos your favorite champion? what modes do you like the most?

not gonna lie i don't really play much ranked/normals anymore haha, most of the time i play aram or the rotating game mode with my friends bc the vibes are more chill :) so i end up playing all sorts of champions really! nexus blitz and arena have been fun recently but aram is probably my all time fave haha
that being said on summoner's rift i usually prefer to play mid mages or any support really! for mid, my mains are lissandra, lux, vex and veigar (and i'm very excited for hwei, i really wanna learn how to play him). for support i particularly like nami, braum, morgana and karma, but again there's loads more supports i like playing :) and occasionally i play sejuani and amumu jungle!
and for skinlines i think my fave is space groove! but i also love arcana, shan hai scrolls, faerie court and la ilusión. oh and stargazer from wild rift! i'd love to see the return of battle queens too :) also there are skinlines that i loved when they first came out, but i feel like they've become oversaturated recently, like star guardian and coven (although i think i'm just biased because SG lux and coven lissandra were the ones who started those skinlines hehe)

Eyes: warm moss-green flecked with gold

Tattoos/scars: no tattoos. Leaf birthmark on his right shoulderblade. Plenty of scars, including the slice from a spear on his left cheek, burn scars on his left shoulder and back, and rather heavily scarred palms and undersides of his fingers due to a nasty injury to his hands

Grandparents: Briar knows nothing about Ciro's parents, other than they died some years before he was born. Saule's father died before he was born. His grandmother died when he was under two so he has no memories of her.
In-laws and Other: As far as Briar knows, his only living blood relative is E-Rani-Tek, Ciro's older brother and a Padjali pariah.
Pets: Briar has a terrible habit of adopting many a creature, although if they are wild-born his goal is always to return them to the wild. Currently, he has a small herd of sheep, a flock of chickens, three Chocobo (one grown, two chicks), a dog named Jack, and a unicorn friend named Whinny. (And a lot of little forest friends that take care of themselves but visit often.)

What I’ve Learned About Puerto Rican Spanish (so far)-Part 1 out of probably more
Some notes before we begin:
-I’ve been studying Spanish on a whole for 3 months. I’m not a native speaker, nor am I Puerto Rican. I will be running this post by my Puerto Rican boyfriend for accuracy’s sake and so I don’t throw around misinformation
-if you can’t tell by me saying “Puerto Rican boyfriend” up there, I’ll be giving this dialect and accent the praise it rightfully deserves as a diverse piece of this beautiful language but I might be a little bit biased 😂
This is the dialect and accent that I’m slowly trying to integrate into my studies naturally so I can eventually adopt it as my own.
Puerto Rico and its language is a prime example of the very thing my nerd brain loves to learn about instead of actually studying the language like I should: the ways that various influences can shape a language. Puerto Rico was one of the lucky ones that got colonized two whole times (fun fact: This Is Bad) and because of that it’s a fairly bilingual culture. Their Spanish is not only beautifully Latino and Caribbean, it’s also very English. Spanglish, if you will. Cursed by the Anglophones. But it’s really cool, admittedly.
Pronunciation
All of this to say that Puerto Rican Spanish doesn’t have all that “c (the)” and “z (theta)” stuff from Spain, for starters, but there’s some other interesting aspects to the speech.
-Puerto Ricans speak fast. Maybe I’m just getting that impression as an A1 beginner but it seems like it’s true.
-Lots of times the “R” sound is replaced with an “L” (“hablar”=“hablal”)
-Like many other dialects they “eat the S” (“buscar”=“bucal”)
-but they’re still hungry so they also eat whole halves of words (“Estás”=“‘Ta”)
-if there’s a “D” in the middle of some vowels or at the end of a word it gets dropped (“cansado”=“cana’o”, “verdad”=“velda’”
-There’s this beautiful rhythm to their speech. It sounds a bit like maybe they put more emphasis on the vowels and I’ve heard it described as almost sing-song, but it’s hard to describe. It’s incredibly unique.
-in some areas the “R” can turn into a hard “H” sound, although I personally haven’t heard this yet
Unique words and phrases, there are more than these but these are the ones I understand enough to feel like I can teach ok vamos
“¿Qué es la que hay?”-“How’s it going?” (Sounds like “¿Qué la que hay?”)
Though most other ways to extend the same greeting can be used, this is a great one to get Puerto Ricans‘ attention and make anyone else go “where did you learn that, what, I’m so confused”
“Corillo”-“gang/group of friends”
This is equivalent to how we use “gang” in English casually to mean our friends, I don’t believe it means a literal gang with gang activity.
“Janguear”-“to hang out” (sounds like “jangueal”)
This is a verb that sounds exactly like what it means, since it comes from English. I have suspicions that there are multiple ways to spell it but this is what I was taught.
“Birra”-“beer”
Self-explanatory. I like this one more than “cerveza” anyway.
“Parquear”-“to park” (sounds like “palqueal”)
Another self-explanatory one. It’s fun to say and makes me wish I could drive so I had an excuse to say it.
“Ahorita”-uhhhhh
I lied about only picking words I understand. I’ll get back to you on this but from what I can tell if “ahora” means “now” then “ahorita” means “a little bit from now”(???). But I really don’t know, it’s not really that. But it is. Remind me to take this section out, alright cool.
“Puñeta”-lit. “jack off”, but a general curse word
Don’t use this one. Don’t tell anyone I told you about it. Take this to your grave. I’m a good influence. I’m a good influence. I’m a
“Bochinche”-“gossip”
This means gossip but not the idle kind, more like the kind you really shouldn’t be throwing around without really meaning it (like what I’m not doing with the words on this list). Slander, I guess. Don’t do this it’s mean 😡
“Duro”-“skilled”
This is in most Spanish dialects and usually means “hard” or “durable”, but Puerto Ricans use it in another way: to say someone’s good at something. Mi español no es duro, por ejemplo.
“Brutal”-“great”
This isn’t like “brutal” in English, being a bad thing. It’s slang that’s saying that something’s really cool or great.
“Buscar” can also mean “to pick someone up (from something)” in Puerto Rico, so like if you were offering to drive your friend somewhere. And it still can sound like “bucal”

I get most of my info from this subject from the YouTube channel Learn Spanish Faster. Specifically the videos on various Puerto Rican words and the accent, both with more information than I have here. Definitely worth checking out!
I asked my boyfriend if he had anything to say to anyone reading this who might be interested in learning more. This is what he had to say:
“hmmm. Puñeta is much more than a general curse word. It’s a way of life. we say it for excitement. we say it for anger. we say it for sadness. when something is extremely difficult: ‘esto esta puñetero’”
He was very excited when I learned that word so it’s no surprise he would share this with you all. It’s a very versatile one he uses a lot and likes a lot (I like it too). Just please be responsible with it.
I’ll definitely make a part 2 once I learn more but this is a good place to leave it, I think.

Fijate que lejos de estar enojada, me decepciona. Porque gracias a este tipo de gente, otros creadores no publican sus cosas, no por miedo a que les roben las ideas, si no por el relajo innecesario que conlleva el estar aclarando las situaciones, el drama y eso.
Porque hay personas que se meten al rollo de que es su idea si o si o que sólo son similitudes demasiado obvias. Ojo que tampoco digo "NO HAGAN HISTORIAS DE ESTE PERSONAJE PORQUE YO LO HICE PRIMERO" Nah. Eso es estúpido.
Como dije, yo no soy dueña del personaje, ni de las artes, siempre doy crédito de las imágenes o referencias artísticas que uso para mis fics. Pero los créditos son parte de la armonía como Fandom y el respeto a los creadores de contenido. A muchos les parecerá hasta exagerado todo esto, pero tengo la certeza qué no soy la única que ha pasado por esto y no solo en el Fandom de ATSV se da. Puede ser unas pequeñas lineas o todo un escrito, pero plagio es plagio.
Nada le costaba a ese usuario el etiquetarme, porque te lo juro. Hay una línea que dice "Mike for the friends". Y siquiera la cambió. Así escrita tal cual. Y me quedé tan pendeja que se me escapó de la mente el tomarle captura.
Pero bueno, sólo me queda de lección el ser más cuidadosa y un poco más estricta con lo que posteo (Por eso la necesidad del otro blog para cosas más personales y el shit post jsksj) . No me gusta los problemas y el drama innecesario, porque ya estoy muy vieja para eso, lol. Pero tampoco significa que voy a dejarme.
