#67 Ruega por nosotros (The Unholy) - 2021

Gerald (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) es un periodista que antes lo tenía todo y ahora se tiene que conformar con ir de pueblo en pueblo cubriendo noticias de bajo interés como relleno de un periódico local. El periodista lo perdió todo cuando, trabajando para un gran periódico, se inventó historias sobre reportajes para hacerlas más interesantes, le pillaron y lo pago él y otros compañeros.

Gerald va a un pequeño pueblo del interior del estado a cubrir la noticia de la mutilación de una vaca, pero al llegar, nada tiene que ver, el hijo del granjero le había hecho una marca con tinte a la vaca, por lo que el periodista se lleva las manos a la cabeza al ver que la historia es una decepción.

Hay un árbol cerca de la granja que está torcido y refleja una luz en su base, por lo que Gerald va directo y encuentra una muñeca de maíz de porcelana con la fecha de 31 de febrero de 1845. Como su historia no tenía fuelle, decide pedirle al granjero que haga como que va a recoger la muñeca rota del suelo y la rompe para que lo haga. Hacen el reportaje y dejan la muñeca donde estaba. Lo que no sabe es que ha liberado una maldición.

Por otro lado, Alice (Cricket Brown) sobrina del sacerdote del pueblo, y muda desde que nació, se despierta en mitad de la noche y se cruza en el camino de Gerald, que casi la atropella, anda como ensimismada hacia el árbol y se pone de rodillas delante de él pidiéndole a la Virgen María que le ayude. Y esta le dice que lo hará.

Todo el pueblo está revolucionado porque Alice puede hablar perfectamente, y Gerald decide quedarse para vender la historia a su antiguo periódico y llevarse un buen bocado, pero la cosa se complica cuando Alice se dedica a hacer milagros: curando el cáncer de su tío y haciendo a un niño volver a andar...

El Vaticano decide bendecir la zona y aislarla para que Alice pueda realizar sus milagros, pero Gerald está teniendo algunas pesadillas sobre zonas del pueblo en las que nunca había estado y en las que se juzgó y asesinó personas tachadas de brujas.

Cuanto más adeptos a lo largo del mundo tienen los milagros de Alice, más raro le parece a Gerald lo que está ocurriendo, tanto a él como al tío de la joven les parece que estos milagros no están orquestados gracias a la Virgen María, sino que hay algo oscuro detrás.

Gerald descubre el cuerpo colgado del tío de la joven, algo que el sacerdote jamás haría y esto solo hace que el periodista se convenza del todo de que hay algo detrás de todo esto, por lo que deciden ir a los archivos de la iglesia para ver que ocurría en el pueblo en la fecha que había en la muñeca.

En la explanada del árbol de la iglesia, al que Alice le rezó, se ejecutaban personas acusadas de brujería, una de ellas fue Mary Elnor (Marina Mazepa) una mujer que decía hacer milagros en nombre de la Vírgen María, pero que en realidad estaba guiada por el mismísimo Satanás, y que su finalidad era conseguir la fe de cuantos más adeptos mejor para reforzar la presencia del Diablo en la tierra. La descendiente directa de Mary Elnor es Alice y, después de que Gerald libere su alma de la muñeca, decide poseerla para terminar su misión.

Gerald habla con varios miembros de la iglesia que no dudan de la historia de Alice, ya que, los milagros son reales y es ahí, cuando siembra la duda que Mary se le aparece, y se completa su historia, contando que cuando la ejecutaron en el árbol: ahorcándola, quemándola y clavándole una máscara de la virgen María de metal.

Mary ataca a Gerald para hacerlo callar y que Alice siga confiando en ella, pero el lazo de unión entre Alice y Gerald es grande, más que la idea de la fe que Mary le propone.

Cuando Alice corta la fe mundial de la gente por sus actos, Mary se enfada y lo incendia todo, queriendo matar a Gerald y Alice, pese a que es su descendiente directa y al hacerlo acabará también consigo misma. Gerald resucita con su fe a Alice y se lo agradece a Dios.

A Chickweed Geometer Moth, A Cricket with some LONG antennae, A Woodlouse/Sowbug Killer Spider, A Hoverfly with some pretty wasp markings who would not leave me alone at work, A Longhorn Beetle of some sort I could not identify, A Fall Webworm Caterpillar, and a Sphinx Moth of some sort (Virginia Creeper? Possibly?)

A great group of pals! The cicada is indeed a dog-day cicada. Tragically the chickweed geometer photo is missing! The spider is not a woodlouse spider but rather a broad-faced sac spider. Woodlouse spiders have SUPER large visible mandibles. The beetle is a longhorn beetle, likely a brown prionid beetle. And yes, the moth is a Virginia creeper!
