Want to paint miniatures fast, but better then table top standard? Find slap-chop a bit stark or murky? Then give this contrast paint and zenithal variant a try. Based on information gleaned from many years of illustration. :)

I think they need a little bit of highlighting before they're really done, but they were another experiment that I considered mostly successful. Back in 2003 I made my Chaos Guard army out of Warzone Capital troops and Games Workshop zombie bits. Going through my bits box I found I still had a lot of parts to make more troops so I made a couple of these weird icon bearers. I was going to paint them up in the old style but then I decided to try and learn how to properly use Games Workshops contrast paints. It was mostly successful, still more to learn.

Paintbrush, PlasGlue, and Holy Clippers: Elf Rangers: Day 3: Belatedly
Yesterday was pretty chill and I actually got allot of painting done but also... I forgot to take the time to write a post -_- So I might be writing two today, tho today's going to be a bit Busy for me, so we'll see :p :p
Ok: so today(yesterday) was Metallics Day, but also I wasn't completely satisfied with how the bow was looking so I decided to paint the interior of it in a darker beige/ivory, Ushabti bone, hoping the contrast this creates would trick the eye into seeing the bow more sharply, and also did a second coat of Morghast on the strings while I was at it, and then I decided the bow-interior needed to be EVEN DARKER, so I painted it with Morghast too. I did that first because the metal flake in metallics doesn't play nice with non-metallic paints.
The metallics I decided on were Brass for the armor bits, Steel for the sword and arrowheads, and gold for Accents; crossguards, buckles, etc. And, for edification, here's where the Rangers stood at the start of the day

The sculpt issue continued to be An Issue, making it difficult to get full coverage, but I mostly got there in the end. I also decided metallic hairbands at the forehead would look good and draw the eye, so I painted those in; gold for Archer and Silver for Handbow. After painting the metallics and giving them time to dry I decided to do some touchup before shading. Also I wanted to cover the greenstuff I'd used to fill gaps as much as I could but the contrasts just weren't thick enough for it, so I mixed some mournfang with Cadian Flesh to approximate the skintone Guilliman creates and painted those areas with that. Here's the touchup paints used and what the rangers looked like when I broke for lunch. OH! Also I'd forgotten to paint the fletching on Archer's knocked arrow previously, so i did that too

the gamestore had some Army Painter wet palettes for sale so after lunch I figured I'd go over there and buy one to see how it impacted things. Here's what it looks like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was $30 and it's absolutely worth it; it's a HUGE improvement over the homebrew method, making a huge different in paint control and how sharp I could get my brush. And the setup was actually real easy; there's a foam pad you soak, then a paper sheet you set on that, wet, and press smooth(they rec using a squeegee but... who has such a small squeegee???)
With the added control the palette gave me, I was able to paint in all the little bits the sculpt had made difficult previously, which pushed the shading back about another hour. AND THEN I finally got to shading.
Tumblr media
I didn't get through all of these since you've got to wait 45 mins btwn applications, and also I had to stop ~3 to order+eat dinner. I wanted to darken the emerald a bit so I went for a dark green wash(Coelia) for that; Fleshshade for the skin, Handbow's leather, the brass and gold, and the exterior tyrian wrap; and Bloodshade for the interior of the tyiran wrap to give it a darker, shadowed look. I used the orange wash on Archer hoping it's lighten her hair up a bit, and the blue on Hadbow's hoping to get that slight blue tinge I'm looking for. Here's how that all looked in the evening when I finally called it a day

They're really coming together! Doesn't look like my plan for the slightly blue hair worked though |:T |:T |:T I think I'll try using a blue contrast paint and see what that does.
Ok so: Tomorrow(today) I'm going to finish the shading, probably add an even lighter yellow shade to Archer's hair to see what that does, and then, if I have time, move on to highlighting ovo Seeya then ^v^ ^v^

I’ve been trying to work through my painting backlog, so I decided to tackle (hah!) some of my models for Blitz Bowl, the smaller streamlined cousin of Blood Bowl. In the interest of doing these quickly, I went with using just GW contrast paints and metallics (and a little wash on the metallics). They’re not up to my usual standard, but they’re just for personal play use and not display, so I think they’re just fine. Some things I’ve discovered as I worked on them:
- I don’t really like painting over white primer; black primer hides missed spots much better than having a glaring white spot between two color zones.
- Working in contrast paints is no less precise when it comes to base coats. In fact, it requires more precision, because the colors don’t overlay one another; they filter each other (or if they’re both still wet, they bleed into each other).
- I will say that the paints do what they say in the tin. Being able to do ork skin in one coat, or white fabric with one light grey, or leather with highlights in one pass - it’s fantastic. Snakebite Leather and Garaghak’s Sewer are my favorite colors right now.
I’ve got 6 more teams to go (Dwarves, Skaven, Chaos, Undead, Halflings, and a second set of Humans), so I’m sure I’ll refine my techniques with each one. I’m about halfway through the Dwarves at the moment.

To my fellow mini painters: what do you think of speed paints? I haven't bought them yet because I like the process of adding details to my pieces, but I can understand why they are so popular. You get great results with no effort. I have also found that thinking normal layer paints to a little more than a wash can get similar results.
Are they worth it?

I've wanted to experiment with a looser and quicker painting style, and what better way to do that than with a Disco Elysium fanart ?
I imagine this happening like the day before the game begins. The last day of disco for pre amnesia Harry Tequila sunset
PS : You should go listen to "le dernier jour du disco" by Juliette Armanet <3 this was the song that inspired me for this
PSS : I won't be remembered for my subtilty

Have you heard about the new @warhammerofficial contrasts and shades that are being released in a fortnight?
Today, Scott and Jojo got a chance to check them out, and even test them on some models!
Why not head down to your local Warhammer store and check it out too? 😸

Paintbrush, PlasGlue, and Holy Clippers: Elf Rangers: Day 2: You've Got 90 Minutes -_-
I DIDN'T HAVE ALLOT OF TIME TO PAINT TODAY! GUESS HOW MUCH TIME I HAD TO PAINT TODAY!!
Being Temporally Contrained, I focused on finishing the bits of the base-layers I hadn't done yet, including deciding what I wanted to do with their hair and skin
Tumblr media
I decided I'd give the guilliman flesh a shot for the skintone since, it being just a thicker-than-average wash, I can always just paint over it with a base or layer paint if I decide I don't like it. One coat wasn't dark enough for my liking, so I ended up doing a second after I finished painting everything else I wanted to today.
I made Archer a redhead and Handbow Raven-haired( u.u u.u), mostly to give me a chance to see how Blood Angel Red and Black Legion work as base coats. They worked fine though, again, I had some trouble applying them to such textured parts of the sculpts. I ended up doing two coats of the red, and maybe 1.5 coats of the black? It's plenty thick enough out of the pot but I overcorrected for this by watering it down a bit too much.
I decided, instead of Black Legion for my secondary leather color(the belts and straps occasionally cross other leather objects so it's necessary for visibility) I'd use Dryad Bark instead. It's a VERY dark, inky brown so it's Basically black anyway u_u u_u u_u This is a VERY thick, rich paint, and I had a wee bit of difficulty gauging the proper water-to-paint ratio at the start. I also painted Handbow's namesake in this color.
I didn't really like how the sepia looked for the bow strings, after watching a few vids on historical bowstring manufacture, I decided I'd paint them a light beige to simulate flax or linen string, and chose Morghast Bone, the one on the end there, for the purpose. I also decided I'd paint the fur-lining on Archer's boots in this color for the same reason. I used the Screaming Skull to paint Archer's bow and arrow shaft as I wanted it to look like Yew. Here's how it turned out
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm liking the progress so far, though I think I need to do a bit of a higher angle for the pics in future so you can get a better look at the handbow. I think the two beiges/ivories will work well as base layers, though I haven't decided which wash I want to use on them yet. BA Red is also a nice, dark red, and Im hoping it'll make a good base for the brassy color I'm ultimately aiming for with Archer. With Handbow I really want a black with blue tones, so I'm going to experiment with a blue shade to see if that lets me create it(I LOVE purple toned black hair, but I really want her's to have a cooler quality to it so silvery-grey highlights will work later). I'll keep the wraps Emerald for now, but I'm thinking I might like a darker Jade-like color better; we'll see.
Ok so: Tomorrow ought to be me getting the metallics knocked out and then making some shading Decisions. Seeya then: Same Paint-time, Same Paint-place >:> >:>
