Original advertisement for what became Marvel Super Heroes: Contest of Champions. The story was meant to be a direct tie-in to the 1980 Summer Olympics but that idea was completely dropped due to delays and the series didn't come out until 1982.
Ms. Marvel, depicted at the top, was also removed from the story and replaced with She-Hulk due to the continuity changes.

On this day in 1982, Marvel kicked off one of their first miniseries AND a huge crossover to boot, Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions! The three-issue series was by Mark Gruenwald and Steven D. Grant, written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by John Romita, Jr. and Pablo Marcos. It featured the Grandmaster and a mysterious opponent choosing teams of three superheroes to fight each other in various places around the world.
The series was supposed to be released in 1980 as a tie-in to the Olympic Games, but the U.S. ended up boycotting the event because it was being held in the Soviet Union. So the miniseries was revamped and any connection to the Olympics was removed. That probably explains the heavy emphasis on international heroes in the series; it introduced Blitzkrieg from Germany, Collective Man from China, Defensor from Argentina, Peregrine from France, Shamrock from Ireland and Talisman from Australia, with appearances by Darkstar, Captain Britain, Sasquatch, Arabian Knight, Sabra, Black Panther, Vanguard and Sunfire, among others.

its interesting to me that so many popular stories can be simplified into the same trope. imagine a series where these stories have to fight each other to keep their trope. kid detectives and a dog? i wanna watch the boxcar children square up with scooby-doo and his lot. young farmer who manipulates objects with invisible abilities and gets a blue sword from an old man who turns out to be a great teacher? my money's on Eragon whooping Luke Skywalker's ass. small boy with a great burden tries to accomplish a task while being plagued by a noseless, pale creature? Frodo would absolutely wreck Harry Potter. Food for thought.
