Age: Teen
Blurb:
Divided by their order. United by their vengeance.
Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom--and vengeance.
Jazmyne is the Queen's daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother's power.
Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain--except the lengths they will go to win this game.

My thoughts:
This book looks badass. Another Jamaica book with an absolutely gorgeous cover is Hurricane Summer.

debating on dnfing Witches Steeped in Gold. I don't know it's fast paced, what is a plus to keep on, but at the other hand I don't care about the plot or the characters? I'm ilke 140 pages in and if I kept on I would rate it 3 stars anyway, i guess? This would be my next dnf right after Breast and Eggs. Is it because the books are around 500 pages long or is it really the plot/writing/characters?
Pls tell me when u dnf a book

Posting my gr review for Empress Crowned in Red by Ciannon Smart here because i feel like her witches duology is quite underrated but i love it dearly.
The sequel was absolutely stunning. This book is a masterpiece. Everything about this duology is so intricately detailed that this world feels fully realised. Smart reveals details and shows us other countries within the empire that are so different to Aciya. It really feels as if this world stretches on, further than the book. The character arcs are fully fleshed and Iraya and Jazmyne are formidable protagonists- i love them both, but i hold a special place in my heart for Jazmyne. If you relate to 'i try my best but it's never enough' i think you'll love her too.
Smart's writing is incredible. Some lines read like poetry, some cut deep, and some resonated so deeply that I'd like them tattooed. I have so much love for this duology, especially as someone from the Jamaican diaspora. Seeing folklore from my heritage as the foundation for an expansive fantasy such as this was something I'll be forever grateful for.
I will be reading everything Smart writes :)

Shannon - Your Priory of the Orange Tree was my introduction to High Fantasy (I have fallen madly in love with your writing) and I was wondering if you had any personal recommendations of High Fantasy novels that you would regard as in the same "league" as Priory/that has a similar vibe? I'm reading The Poppy War trilogy at the moment, and while I'm really enjoying it, it has a vastly different vibe to Priory. I would love to dive into another sweeping, delectable, diverse, enchanting tale, as Priory was (forgive me, I don't have the words to capture the scope of my love for it).
I loved The Poppy War so much – I highly recommend Rebecca's next book, Babel, which is out in August. It's a masterpiece.
I think you'd probably enjoy all these books:
A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy
A Shiver of Snow and Sky by Lisa Lueddecke
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin
The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi
The Girl King by Mimi Yu
Mirage by Somaiya Daud
Realm Breaker by Victoria Aveyard
Shadowscent by P. M. Freestone
State of Sorrow by Melinda Salisbury
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Twin Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber
Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart

witches steeped in gold, ciannon smart
released 2021
re-read: 12 january 2023 – 09 february 2023
i will say this was a slight improvement on my first read, but this book still suffers from long-windedness and boredom-inducing moments.
however, i did read this in preparation for reading the sequel, empress crowned in red, and i do still hope that it's an improvement on the first instalment even if the page count is rather worrying...
see my original review on goodreads.
