so I discovered some distressing information earlier
so I was talking in the tags of my "Sage's theme music mashup" post yesterday about how Infinite's theme and Aviators' "Too Late for a Savior" could mash up well- I'd associated the two in my mind for some time since they're both in C# minor, they both have strong industrial/electronic influences and a dark tone, and both of them have lyrics pertaining to the narrator's inner turmoil as they lapse into evil (Infinite's lyrics are more about putting on a facade of strength to hide one's weakness, while Too Late for a Savior's lyrics are more about a moral struggle and whether or not a path to redemption is possible for the narrator, but my point still stands)
but just to prove my point, I knew Too Late for a Savior has a BPM of 138 (it's listed as such in the Godhunter instrumentals album on Bandcamp), so I decided to use a metronome to time Infinite's theme (it's ~144 BPM)
but thinking of metronomes, my garbage brain lost its train of thought and immediately thought of the metronome section from the song "BANG!" by AJR
and from that, I realized that a) BANG! is also in C# minor, and b) it has a BPM of ~143, so sections from it can be mashed up with Infinite's theme pretty easily
TL;DR: three-way Aviators vs. AJR vs. Dangerkids mashup when

The Pregnancy Glow
Requested: yes
Summary: Rooster can’t help but admire his wife. It’s only a bonus that you’re pregnant.
Word count: 1.0k
Warnings: mentions of pregnancy.
Pairings: Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw x wife!reader
Tumblr media
The wind whipped quickly through your hair as loud laughs escaped you. You were in the passenger seat of your husband's Bronco, singing loudly with the music as he sped down the road. You two had decided to head down to the beach today, seeing as it was Rooster’s last day off before he was needed back at Top Gun. The rest of the aviators were going to meet you there later in the day, but you and Bradley went early to spend some time together on the beach.
Bradley watched you fondly with a large grin as you moved to change the song. Seconds later familiar chords filled the truck. Your eyes cut to Bradley, offering him a cheeky smile. You began singing quietly, waiting for the chorus where you knew your husband would join in. It soon came to the last line of the chorus and you were dying Bradley expectantly. He sighed dramatically before he began singing. “That’s right, I’ve got better things to do!” There was a giddy smile on your face when your husband looked back over at you. His hand found yours as he squeezed softly. The Terri Clark classic was one of you and your husband’s favourite songs. You had made sure to play it at least once whenever the two of you went out. The first time Bradley had ever heard the song you had used it to turn down a date, sending the lyrics to him. The pilot would never admit that he had to ask Phoenix what it meant. She still laughed about it today.
When the song finished a few minutes later Bradley was pulling into the parking lot. He pressed a kiss to the back of your hand as he hopped from the truck. Quickly rounding the front, he opened your door and helped you down. Your hands settled on your swollen belly as you pressed a kiss to his scruffy cheek. One of your favourite things about this time off was that he was able to grow out his beard. Although you had to admit, you couldn't wait for the return of the mustache.
Once Bradley grabbed your beach bags, he grasped your hand and began walking with you down to see the beach. Bradley led you to the spot where you usually set your belongings. After laying out your towels you slipped off your flip-flops and held your hand out for Bradley to grab. You offered him a small smile once he did.
The two of you began walking down the beach, hands swinging between you as your feet splashed in the water. Occasionally, Bradley’s eyes would dart over to you, running along your frame before they returned to the sand in front of him. The pilot couldn’t believe how lucky he was. The day that he officially got to call you his wife was the happiest day of his life, but he knew that the day his little girl is born will be a pretty close call. His eyes landed on your ever-growing bump as a large smile overtook his face.
You were seven months along, and needless to say, Bradley couldn’t wait until you gave birth. The gender reveal party had been over a month ago. You and your husband had trusted Jake and Natasha to plan the party. Since the day that Bradley found out that he was going to be a father to a baby girl, he was ecstatic to meet her. The hospital bag had been sitting by the door for the past two weeks. Just in case, as Bradley had put it.
You tugged on Bradley’s hand and pulled him more into the water. With a mischievous grin that you did your best to hide, you bent down slightly. Dipping your hand into the water, you turned from your husband and splashed him with the water. Once he had wiped all of the cold droplets off his face he was left gaping at you. You giggled quietly as Bradley fixed you with a playful glare. Next thing you knew water was flying at you, causing you to shriek and raise your hands to cover your face.
That was the beginning of a merciless water fight. By the end of it, you and your husband were laughing loudly as water dripped down the both of you. Bradley grabbed your hand gently with a soft smile and pulled you back onto the sand. The grainy substance was warm beneath your toes, sticking to the bottom of your wet feet as you walked back down the beach.
There was a small grin on your face as one of Bradley’s fingers began toying with your wedding rings. You squeezed his hand three times, receiving the same gesture in return a few seconds later. That was the gesture that you and Bradley had used since you first got engaged. Whenever one of you wanted to tell the other that they loved them, they simply had to squeeze their hand or even tap them three times to let them know. You usually used it when you were in crowded public spaces but you figured that now wasn’t the time to disturb the peace. The view from where you were standing really was beautiful.
A few minutes later you and Bradley arrived back at your towels. Your husband sat down in the sand first, grinning up at you before tugging on your hand. Slowly, you sat down in front of him, allowing Bradley to rest his hands on your bump. You relaxed back into his hold, your eyes fluttering shut as his fingers moved over your skin carefully.
Your husband gasped quietly when he felt the baby girl kick, grinning widely at the feeling. Humming as Bradley began rubbing his hand over your bump softly. You rested your head against his shoulder as you relaxed in the warmth of the sun. A few moments later you could hear your friends laughing in the parking lot. Your hand settled over Bradley’s on your belly as their voices grew closer.
A/n: Hope everyone enjoyed! Feel free to send in any requests.

Man to Make Me Sweat
Tumblr media
Pairing: Rooster x Reader (Call Sign: Moxie)
Warnings: Language, Smut, so much smut, porn with plot. Age Gap, Choking, Spanking, Orgasm Denial, Over stimulation, Authority Kink.
Shout out to @thedroneranger for beta reading and listening to my word vomit! This fic was inspired by the Leslie Powell song "Man to Make Me Sweat"
"Guys thank you so much for helping me plan this!" You sqeual at the people infront of you. Rooster's 35th birthday was coming up and you had planned a surprise party with the help of the Dagger Squad, Maverick and Penny, who had agreed to shut the Hard Deck down for the party.
"You know Rooster hates his birthday." Phoenix piped up. "Yes I know, but I'm hoping my little surprise for him will change that." You smirked.
While you were a fellow Navy pilot, you hadn't crossed paths much with the Daggers until you had met Phoenix at a Pole dancing class.
You two instantly hit it off, and she had invited you out to get drinks with them the next night, that's when you met Rooster, and the rest was history. While it was no secret that you and Phoenix took the class together, Rooster had never seen you dance for him, and tomorrow that was about to change.
Phoenix had helped you choreograph a lap dance to one of your favorite songs and you were going to surprise Rooster with it.
Sure it might be a little embarrassing for your coworkers to see your moves, but you wanted your boyfriend to feel extra special for his birthday. You joked that he was going to officially be an old man, to which he defend that there was only a five year age gap between the two of you.
"Well Moxie, if Rooster doesn't appreciate, I know I will" Hangman smirked at you, causing Phoenix to promptly smack him on the back of his head.
"Ow Nix, what the hell?" He grimaced.
"Comments like that are why you don't have a girlfriend and why I have to convince Rooster not to murder you almost everyday." Phoenix responded.
"Okay children enough fighting. Boys I need you guys to go get Rooster and bring him here in one hour. Phoenix and Bob and I are going to finish setting up. Payback since you are the most... responsible of the group, please text me when you are five minutes out." You state before everyone leaves.
An hour later you were hiding behind the stage curtain you had set up. Rooster had been pouting saying how it wasn't fair that his girl wasn't there for his party because you had to work late... boy was he in for a surprise.
Hangman and Coyote had managed to convince him to sit in the strategicly placed chair you had set out.
"And now ladies and gents, Rooster's of all ages, please put your hands together for a very special performance by our very own Moxie!" Phoenix said into the microphone to the group before the music started. You had chosen one of your favorite songs "Man to Make Me Sweat" to do your routine too.
You stepped out onto the stage wearing one of Rooster's Hawiian shirts, a pair of aviator sunglasses, a white crop top and some cut off shorts.
His eyes went wide at the sight of you while the rest of the room of testosterone filled pilots howled and wolf whistled. You noticed Bob over in to corner looking like we was ready to throw Holy Water on everyone.
The first verse started and you began your dance, swaying your body to the beat, flipping your hair and keeping eye contact with Rooster.
You trailed your hands up his thighs and jerked him forward by his dog tags.
When the first chorus began you roughly dropped onto his lap and ground your hips against him. You flipped your hair and pressed your breasts in his face.
You watched him lick his lips as you dropped to the floor for the second verse. Slowly you crawled up his body and guided his hands to touch you.
By the time the second chorus came around you were shamelessly grinding on his now very hard cock as he fondled you.
When the song ended you were both panting while everyone cheered.
Rooster pulled you close and whispered in your ear.
"I'm taking you home right now to show you just how much I can make you sweat Moxie.
Forty minutes later, Rooster was emerging from your thighs after giving you your third orgasm of the night
You can't help but smile. You love it when Rooster gets like this, needy, possessive, primal.
When you first got together everyone gave you shit for dating someone who was almost six years older than you. Several of your civilian friends teased you for having daddy issues or if servicing the elderly was part of your job in the Navy. You just rolled your eyes at their comments, many of them dated men their age or younger, they didn't know what they were missing out on.
No one had ever fucked you like Rooster did, and as your relationship progressed, you didn't hesitate to let your friends know that your "old man" kept you very satisfied while their "younger models" couldn't keep up.
You were finally coming down from you high, but you still weren't satisfied. You wanted to see how far you could push him. Rooster crawled up your body leaving sloppy wet kisses in his wake. His mustache scraped your sensitive skin causing you to tremble.
You felt the fat head of his cock pressing into your slick entrance, and with one fluid motion Rooster was buried in you to the hilt.
"Always so fucking tight for me Moxie. It's like you cunt was made for me." He groaned out before setting a steady rhythm. His fingers flexed against your hips as he drove into you. You could feel his blunt nails digging into your skin.
It always felt so good when he took you, but you wanted his birthday sex to be extra special. You knew he was desperate for you, to mark you, to claim you. Especially after your little show at the Hard Deck, so, you pushed.
"It's that all you've got Old Man?" You moaned out.
His hips stopped suddenly.
"Old Man?" He grunts out while he is still inside you.
You smirk back up at him as he pulls all the way out and slams back into you causing you to arch up.
"You say Old Man like its a bad thing... you think someone younger could fuck you like I do sweetheart? I doubt they could make you cum three times before they even got inside you" He tells you as he picks up the pace. A groan leaves your lips has he drags his cock over your g-spot, the head of it hitting it with each hard stroke.
"I don't know babe, Hangman talks a big game." You shoot back at him.
A low rumble leaves his chest as he pulls out and swiftly flips you over. He pushes your face down into the mattress and has your ass up the in air on display for him.
His large hand makes contact with it causing you to yelp from pleasure and pain.
Rooster fists your hair and and jerks your head up before whispering in your ear. "Moxie baby, I'm only going to tell you this once. Don't ever say his name while I've got you naked ever again. You want to see what this old man's got... I'll show you exactly what this 'old man' is made of, I'll have you so fucked out and cock drunk you won't be able to walk straight for a week darlin"
You knew you had him right where you wanted him, but you were feeling extra bratty so without thinking of the consequences you uttered "Well, what are you waiting for old man, prove it."
That set Rooster a blaze. He roughly palmed your ass before smacking it again. Without warning he plunged himself into you. His hips pistoned against yours quickly driving you to another peak.
"Oh fuck yes Rooster, just like that" you cried out as your hands fisted the sheets. You desperately tried to meet his thrusts but he held you firmly in place.
"Guess I should have known you were a brat with a call sign like Moxie." He grunted out. His fingers dug deeper into your sides as you clamped down on him. You were so close, your body hummed, and just as you were about to fall, he abruptly pulled out.
"Bradley no..." You whined as your chest heaved.
"You didn't really think I was going to let you get away with calling me an old man with out punishment did you sweetheart?" He purred in your ear as he rubbed himself between your folds.
"I'm sorry Rooster, I was just teasing you sir." You groaned, hoping it would cause him to give in, you knew he had an authority kink.
"Have you learned your lesson Moxie?" He asked.
"Yes Sir I promise I have." You stated shaking your head.
This seemed to please him because he pushed back into you. Starting slow and working back up.
You whined and squirmed beneath him. You were even more wound up than before. Each thrust of his hips sent a delicious pleasure through you.
You could feel the tightening in your belly and your toes curling. Rooster's breath was ragged as he pushed both of you to the finish. One of his hands left your hips and made its way to your hair, grabbing it and snapping your head up. You were at his mercy and you were totally okay with that.
"Yes Bradley, right there I'm so close." You moaned out. You could feel your finish, you were so close you could taste it and then... he stopped again.
"Fuck... please...Rooster... please." You groaned.
"If you want to cum baby girl, you're going to have to be more convincing. I don't think you've learned your lesson." He mocked you.
"I promise I have, I'm sorry, I'll be a good girl Bradley, please, please, please let me cum" you babbled. You feel the hot prick of tears in your eyes. He was still deep inside you. You flexed around him causing him to hiss.
That earn you another spank. "Such a fucking needy brat." He said dropping his hand from your hair and curling it around your throat. He pulled you flush against him.
"What do you have to say for yourself?" He whispered in your ear before sinking his teeth into your lobe.
"Only for you sir. I promise I'll be your good girl. Please let me cum." You pleaded with him as tears began to slide down your face.
That seemed to make him have mercy on you. Rooster once again began thrusting into you. This time he didn't hold back, this thrust were hard and demanding. The head of his cock kissed your cervix with each one.
His hand dropped from your throat and went to your clit were he drew tight circles on it. You were so, so close after being wound up and let down twice.
"Rooster please, I'm so close... please... don't stop" you begged.
"I can feel how close you are... I know how bad you need to cum. Just say the magic word darling and I will give you what you want." He cooed to you.
Your bratty side had gone to his head and now he was on a power trip. You knew what he wanted, and he knew you were desperate but you still refused to give it.
"Please sir, let me be your good girl and cum for you. Let me cum all over your cock." You moaned.
"While that sounds amazing honey, those aren't the words I'm looking for." He shot back.
"Rooster—please!" You shouted as he gave a particularly hard thrust.
He laughed.
"Say it. Come on princess I know you're dying to cum. You're the one who keeps torturing yourself. Quit. Being. So. Fucking. Stubborn. And. Say. It." He punctuated each word with a hard snap of his hips.
You let out a pathetic whimper as the small trickle of tears turned into a stream.
"DADDY PLEASE!" You screamed throwing your head back. You couldn't take it anymore.
"That's right. That's my girl." He praised you.
Rooster picked up his efforts, pounding into you erratically while his finger worked your clit.
"Oh fuck Daddy I'm so close please don't stop." You begged him, you knew if he did stop you wouldn't be able to handle it.
"Daddy isn't going to stop until you cum all over him Princess. Come in baby I know how bad you need to. Be a good girl and cum for Daddy." He moaned in your ear.
Your chest was heaving and your heart was racing, you felt overwhelmed everything was too much and not enough at the same time. Your body was wound tight. A rubber band waiting to snap. Rooster continued his assault, pushing you further and futher toward your pleasure. His hand on your hip came across your chest and pulled you impossibly closer to him.
His lips found your ear as he panted out "Cum for me." It wasn't a statement, it was a demand, and it was all you needed to finish.
Your body shook as pleasure coursed through you, covering his cock, your thighs, his thighs, and the sheets.
"YesyesyesohyesDaddy" you babbled out as your body trembled against him.
Rooster followed closely behind you, filling you to the brim and spilling out, his release mixing with your own.
You both collapsed against the bed, thoroughly spent. It took you both several minutes to regain your composure.
You turned over in his arms to face him.
"How was that for an Old Man?" He joked. "S'good" you slurred, your body still coming down from the high.
"Happy Birthday." You murmured snuggling close to him.
"Thank you baby. How about we get a nice hot bath and get cleaned up and then change the sheets before bed? We made a mess." He said before pressing a kiss to your hair line.
"Sounds good Roo." You mumbled into his chest as he picked you up and carried you to the bathroom.
He drew a hot bath and gently set you in before climbing in behind you. You relaxed against his chest.
"Roos, you may be an old man, but I'm glad your mine." You sighed against him.
"I'm glad I'm your old man to baby." He grinned before relaxing further into the hot water.

Rooster's Brood | Part 2
Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Wife!Reader
Summary: The squad babysits and Rooster intends to take full advantage of his alone time with you.
CW: fluff, dad Rooster, Rooster loves his hot wife, suggestive banter and allusions to sex, A LOT OF KIDS (this is probably the biggest warning haha).
Based on this request.
Masterlist
Tumblr media
You walk out into the living room to find that the rest of the squad has already arrived. The number of people crowded on the lower level of the house is laughable, but it’s the first time the aviators are babysitting, so they’ve decided that the more reinforcements they have, the better. You step around Mickey and your twin boys who are in the midst of terrorizing his pant legs to show off your new dress.
“What do you think?” you say, smiling at your husband as he looks up at you from the couch.
Three of your children are bouncing on the cushions so Bradley is bobbing up and down as his eyes rake over your figure. His mouth quirks into a sideways smirk and he rises from the couch, saying, “Wow.”
“Bradshaw, you’ve yet to tell us how you tricked this goddess into marrying you,” Jake says from the armchair where your daughter is cozying up to his knee. He’s absently running his fingers through her hair and she looks oddly content just leaning against his leg.
Bradley’s grin widens. “I’ll have to get back to you when I figure it out,” he says.
You chuckle, shaking your head. “You like my dress?” you ask, turning on the spot.
Bradley nods. “It’s spectacular,” he says. “But it would look better on the floor.”
A chorus of gasps erupts out of the adults in the room. Jake claps his hands over your daughter’s ears with a horrified expression. “Rooster! The children!”
Bradley laughs. “Don’t worry, that was way too abstract for them to follow. I’m surprised you caught on, Hangman.”
Jake gives him a flat look while your daughter starts climbing into his lap. You find it endearing that she’s taken such a liking to him and even more sweet that he helps her up and wraps his arms around her tiny body, shielding her face with his hand as your other kids start clambering his legs trying to gain his attention.
“You guys better go before Hangman has a heart attack,” Natasha says, ushering the two of you toward the door. “Rooster, are you wearing jeans?”
“What’s wrong with jeans?” he asks, slipping his Ray-Bans over his eyes.
“Nothing, if y’all aren’t going to the same place,” Jake calls out.
Natasha eyes Rooster’s Hawaiian shirt and then the high heels you’re stepping into and purses her lips. “I never agree with Hangman,” she says. “But I have to agree with Hangman.”
Bradley gives her and the rest of the aviators an ironic smile. “Just don’t forget to feed the kids, alright?” he says.
“I think Fanboy brought five separate meals,” Reuben responds with a chuckle.
“We’ll see who’s laughing when dinnertime rolls around. Toddlers can be picky eaters, you know?” Mickey chimes in.
Bradley raises his eyebrows. “That’s not false.”
You clear your throat. “They’ll eat whatever you give them, just be firm. No dessert until they’ve had enough to eat.”
“Dessert?” Jake calls from the armchair although he’s not exactly visible behind the jumble of little arms and legs. All your kids seem to have decided that they want to sit on him. “What’s for dessert?”
Bradley looks over at you and winks over his sunglasses. “I know what I’m having for dessert.”
“Rooster!” Jake roars. “The children!”
You giggle and Natasha shakes her head with a smile. “I don’t know how many more innuendos Hangman can handle.”
Bradley smiles. “Alright, kids, we’re leaving!”
“Yes, we know,” Bob says, holding the door open.
You stifle a laugh while Bradley gives him an amused look. “I meant the other kids,” he says as a throng of your offspring race for the door to say goodbye. Bradley squats down to give each child a kiss while you pat their heads before they sprint back toward Jake’s armchair. The entire process takes no less than five minutes because Bradley has something to say to every one of the kids. When it’s your daughter’s turn, Bradley lifts her onto his knee and gives her a warm hug. “I love you so much, princess,” you hear him whisper in her ear.
“I love you too, daddy,” she says, putting her arms around his neck.
“Uh,” Javy says, watching the series farewells uneasily. “You guys are planning on coming back, right?”
Bradley chuckles as your daughter slides off his lap. “Bedtime’s at eight!” he hollers over the noise of the room.
“Where am I sleeping?” Jake calls back.
Bradley rolls his eyes and leads you out the door.
“Think they’ll be okay?” you ask, a little nervous to hear Bradley’s answer.
“Phoenix is there,” he says. “She’ll make sure Hangman behaves.”
You laugh. “Are Phoenix and Hangman –”
“They should be,” he responds with a grin.
You nod. “I thought so.” Bradley watches as you bring your glass to your lips. You catch his gaze and smile. “See something you like?” you ask playfully.
“Yes, that drink looks delicious,” he says.
You laugh, glancing down at your strawberry daiquiri. “Want some?”
“Oh, I definitely want some,” he replies with a smirk.
You let out a soft chuckle and he reaches for your hand. “What are the chances that all the kids sleep through the night tonight?” he asks.
“Negative chances?”
“Let’s get the squad to sleep over,” he says, wiggling his eyebrows.
“That might be asking too much.”
Bradley holds his phone up. “Phoenix has already offered. Apparently, the twins want Hangman in the top bunk.”
“Your poor friends don’t know what they’re getting themselves into.”
Bradley shrugs. “It’ll be a learning experience.”
“For your squad? Or for our children?”
“Both?”
“Well, if they’ve offered…”
Bradley’s grin widens. “So,” he says. “Where are we sleeping tonight?”
You raise your eyebrows at your husband. He licks his lips tantalizingly and you could swear that he gets sexier with every passing day. “Who says we’re going to be sleeping?”
Bradley watches you in awe. “Alright, so, you ready to get out of here or what?”
You start laughing again. “We haven’t even had dinner!”
“They’re taking too damn long,” he says with a hint of a whine in his voice. “And I’m not even hungry. For food, anyway.”
You glance down at his hand that’s wrapped around yours on top of the table, his grip tightening slightly in his excitement. “You’re so funny,” you say, but you can’t deny that his eagerness to get on with the evening has your heart racing too.
“Who’s joking?”
You shake your head, knowing that he’s mostly kidding. However, you also know that were you to agree to leave now, he’d skip dinner in an instant. “You’re cute,” you say.
“How cute?” he asks. “Cute enough to fuck before the first course?”
“Bradley!”
He chuckles, squeezing your hand. “That’s a yes, right?”
You give him a pointed look. “Your girl is hungry.”
“I could give you something to eat.”
Your mouth drops open and you glance around fretfully to ensure that nobody’s heard him. You glare at him threateningly, but he probably just finds the action adorable because his grin widens and he slides his fingers through yours.
“I’m kidding, honey,” he says, but the way the word honey sounds in his deep, slightly raspy voice makes you a touch unsettled. Perhaps you’re not as hungry as you thought. You stare into your husband’s dark eyes while his thumb draws slow circles into the back of your hand. You realize that what you want more than dinner rolls and a starter salad is his tongue in your mouth. His hands around your waist, your back pressed up against some wall or other.
“They look pretty busy,” you say, your breathing accelerating with how much your imagined encounter has exhilarated you. “We might have fifteen minutes or so.”
Bradley cocks an eyebrow, his thumb pausing its languid strokes. “Are you serious?”
You shrug. “Unless you’re not up for it.”
“Oh,” he says. “I’m definitely up for it. In fact, I’m up just thinking about it.”
You exhale sharply. “Let’s do it,” you say resolutely, rising from your seat.
Bradley looks up at you in disbelief as you spring up from your seat and pull down at the hem of your dress. He reaches over to brush his fingers over your thigh. “Why bother?” he says in a low voice. “I’ll be pulling it back up in a minute.” His thumb brushes the skin under your dress until you swat at his hand in shock.
“Bradley!” you hiss. “Don’t be so fucking obvious about it.”
Bradley smirks, adjusting his jeans before standing up. “I want everybody to know that I get to touch you,” he says into your ear as he pulls you in by the waist. “I’m very proud of that, you know?”
You melt into his arms as he draws your body into his chest, steering you toward the back hall of the restaurant. You can sense that the two of you are being so indiscreet that it’s bordering on obscene but, in the moment, you hardly have a care in the world.
You shuffle through the corridor toward the rear, past the swinging kitchen door, and Bradley’s hands close around your shoulders as he drives you into one of the darker alcoves near the exit. The back room that’s normally reserved for private parties is empty, so the two of you have the space to yourselves.
As soon as he’s pressed his body against yours, Bradley starts pulling up your dress. He leans his head into yours as his fingers hook into the lacy band of your panties and he lets out a shaky sigh.
“Do you have a condom?” you breathe heavily into his face as his lips catch yours in several soft, sensual kisses.
“No,” he says. Then, he gives you a mischievous grin. “But when has that stopped us before?”

I Have a Girlfriend
“I’m Never Drinking Again” Part Two
Paring: Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw x female!reader
TW: swearing, alcohol and drunken shenanigans, I believe that's all
Summary: A night out with the dagger squad leads to quite an amusing Bradley Bradshaw.
Word count: 1.5k
A/N: 1,000% this Is how I see rooster in this lmao. also I was going to queue this but I literally can't sit on a fic once its done so you guys are being spoiled with two in one night.
Tumblr media
Rooster isn't usually much of a drinker. He nurses a couple of beers when you go out with the daggers, but he knows how to be the life of the party sober. He prefers to have fun while being completely in control and he hates the idea of you drinking without him watching over you.
However, tonight is a different story. Jake and Phoenix are awful influences and between the two of them, they've managed to get Bradley sloppy drunk. You shake your head as you watch the pilots dancing to some 80s song on the jukebox. You and Maverick have assigned yourselves as the designated drivers, knowing damn well the rest of the group would end up passed out in random places if you didn't.
Bradley is sporting a crooked smile and a light blush on his cheeks from the alcohol coursing through his blood. He's wearing his aviators inside and at some point managed to lose his tank top, now just wearing an open Hawaiian shirt.
You've only seen Bradley drunk once and you don't remember much of it seeing as you were matching him shot for shot. You and Mav chat away, glancing at the group every few minutes. Jake has untucked his shirt and Phoenix is singing into a pool cue.
It makes your heart happy to see your friends letting loose. As much fun as he is sober, drunk Bradley is unmatched. His energy is magnetic and it seems everyone in the room is laughing and dancing with him at one point or another. You smile to yourself, proud that you get to call him yours.
You're listening to Mav tell a story about Jake throwing up after having one too many fruity drinks he swears he doesn't like when you hear a loud chorus of cheers. You look over and almost spit your drink out.
Bradley is standing on the bar top waving his shirt around while people throw money at him. You notice his chest and abs glistening and try to recall when the hell he got wet. His hands reach for his belt buckle and you launch toward him, spilling your drink in the process. You fight your way over to the bar and jump up on a stool so you can reach him.
You manage to stop him just before he catches a public indecency charge and all but drag him back down to solid ground. You're met with protests and boos but shoot the crowd a look and they shut up. Bradley stumbles behind you as you pull him over to a booth and motion for Mav to get him some water.
Rooster practically falls into the seat giggling to himself like a schoolgirl. You stand in front of him with your hands on your hips and an amused smirk. It takes him a second to notice your presence and when he does he looks up. His eyes are glassy and unfocused and he scowls at you.
Maverick walks over with a pitcher of water and Bradley's shirt and you shoot him an appreciative smile. He stays with you to make sure that you don't need help. Bradley would never do anything out of line, but he's a big guy, and trying to support him on your own would be a near-impossible feat.
You pour a cup of water and place it down in front of him. "Drink." You order while pointing at the glass. Rooster wrinkles his nose in disgust and scoots further away from you. Mav shoots you a look of confusion and you return it with a frown.
You reach out to run your hand through Bradley's hair the way he loves and he recoils, letting out something akin to a squeal as he tries to avoid your touch. Now you're really confused. "What the hell are you doing?" Your voice is sassy but you have a light smile.
"I don't want you." His words are so slurred you barely catch what he says, but when it registers hurt shoots through your chest. You take a step back and fold your arms, retreating into yourself. "Why not?"
He looks at you as if you've grown a third head and pulls his phone out. He holds it up to show you his lock screen, it's a picture of the two of you at the beach. Your eyebrows shoot up and you wait for him to explain.
"I have a girlfriend." He says matter of factly while dramatically pointing at your face on his screen. You cover your mouth with your hand trying not to laugh at him. "I'm gonna call her, I miss her." He pouts and you watch as he fumbles through putting in his password and finding your contact.
He presses call and flops back on the bench with his eyes closed. You feel your phone start vibrating and debate whether or not you should actually answer it. Bradley's face has a childlike excitement on it at the idea of talking to you and you decide to play along.
You slide the button over and press the phone up to your ear as Maverick laughs next to you. "Hey, baby." You watch as a bright smile lights up Bradley's face when he hears your voice and your heart flutters.
"Hiii sweet girl. Where'd you run off to? I miss you." He sulks and you almost choke on a laugh.
"I'm still here pretty boy. I see you laying on a bench, I'll be right there." Rooster's eyes shoot open and your lips quirk up at the absurdity of the situation. He struggles to sit up for a second, grasping around to get his bearings before his eyes meet yours.
He reaches out and makes grabby hands at you before pulling you down to sit in his lap. He nuzzles his face into your shoulder and inhales your scent. You reach back to run your hand through his hair and he lets out a content sigh.
His eyebrows furrow when he sees the water sitting on the table and he turns haphazardly to look at you. "When did that get there?" He asks completely bewildered. You smile at him and run your fingers along his jawline. "I brought it for you. You need to drink some water or you're going to get sick." You explain gently.
He nods his head and chugs the water without any more questions. "Slow down, baby. It's not going anywhere." You laugh and he smiles sheepishly at you. His eyes start to droop and you share a look with Mav silently agreeing it's time to get him home.
You cup Bradley's cheek and bring his attention to you. "I'm going to get you home so you can sleep this off. Do you think you can stand so Mav can help me get you to the car?"
He nods his head lazily and you stand up off his lap. He clambers to his feet and stumbles, almost toppling over. Bradley has some height on the both of you but you manage to wrangle him out to the Bronco and get him buckled in.
You turn to Mav before climbing in the driver's side. "Are you sure you're okay to get everyone home?" He waves his hand dismissively and laughs. "Trust me, I've dealt with worse. Go, get him home safe."
You nod and give him a hug before driving your hot mess of a boyfriend home. Once you're there, getting him inside is a whole new challenge. He fell asleep in the car and seems even drunker if that's possible.
You manage to get him inside to your shared bedroom by the skin of your teeth and you plop him down on the bed. You sigh as you walk into the ensuite, stopping to drop your clothes in the hamper on the way. You brush your teeth and wash your face before facing the 6-foot pilot passed out in the other room.
When you walk back in, you groan at the sight of him on the floor. His shirt is still off from the bar and his pants are halfway down his legs. It seems he tried to change himself before giving up halfway through and slumping over on the carpet with his mouth hanging open.
You shake him awake and he swats at your hand mumbling for you to go away. "Bradley Nicholas Bradshaw. I've had about enough. Get your ass up in this bed so I can go to sleep." You scold and he drags himself up onto the bed. It's a messy tangle of flailing arms and legs and you can't help but laugh at the sight.
Once he kicks off his jeans and is settled under the covers, you grab a trash can and Gatorade along with painkillers for the morning. You crawl under the covers and even in his drunken stupor, Bradley still reaches out to find you.
You lean over and kiss him on the cheek. "Goodnight, pretty boy. I love you." You're met with soft snores and you roll over and shut your eyes. It's going to be one hell of a morning.

Walking into the Hard Deck, arm linked with Phoenix's, it didn't take long to spot a familiar group of aviators gathered around the pool table. It was a Friday night and you all had just finished up another day of grueling training.
So it was no wonder that everyone flocked here, in desperate need of some drinks and whatever antics the guys had planned.
"Well if it isn't Phoenix and Finch," Hangman's smile grows ever wider as he catches sight of you two, "Care to join us  ladies?"
"Only if you can handle getting your ass handed to you, once again." Phoenix says as she accepts the pool cue that Bob was holding out to her.
Hangman puts a hand over his chest, "You wound me, honestly. But if I were you I wouldn't be too cocky."
You roll your eyes, "You speaking to yourself there, Bagman?"
The group around you lets out a chorus of "ooohs" as Hangman holds up his hands, "Hey I'm just setting up for what's about to go down."
"The only thing that's about to go down is that ego of yours." Phoenix mutters as she lines up her cue.
Leaning your back against the bar, elbows resting on the counter, you let out a chuckle as you watch the bickering continue between the two pilots.
"They won't ever stop, will they?" You turn your head as a voice comes from next to you. Rooster mirrors you as he stares at the group surrounding the pool table.
"Says you." A chuckle comes from your throat, "Whatever you and Hangman have going on is nothing compared to this."
Rooster gasps dramatically, bringing his beer bottle to his lips. You can't help the way your eyes flick towards them as he takes a drink.
"Hangman just has it out for everyone in his own weird… flirtatious way." Rooster says as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand.
You fake a shudder, "Eugh. I don't know what he's doing but it certainly isn't flirting."
That earns a laugh from Rooster and a part of you tries to ignore the way the sound of it makes your heart flutter. You feel heat rise in your cheeks as you glance away from the curly haired man, shaking the thoughts from your head.
"Well," Rooster sets his beer down on the counter and takes your hand in his own, "One thing we know for sure is that he's good at causing trouble. So, if you'll excuse me malady, I gotta go to the rescue of dear Bob over there." With a wink and a kiss to your hand, Rooster is leaving you breathless.
The action was so small and natural but God did it make your heart skyrocket. At that moment you're sure that going 10 G's would've been easier on you than whatever you were feeling right now.
A smile creeps its way onto your face as you watch Rooster make his way towards Hangman, the pair immediately falling into a friendly bicker match as Rooster picks up a pool cue.
A wave from Phoenix finally peels you away from the bar, "You trying to hide from us, Finch?" She asks as she hands you a drink.
You gladly accept it and nudge her with your elbow, "Hide from you? Never."
Her laughter mixes with yours as you seemingly melt into the group of aviators surrounding the pool table. The night goes on in a haze of loud music, drinking, and some well needed laughter.
After what you guessed was a couple of hours passed last call, Penny was ushering you all out onto the beach, "You're drunk, kids, go home!" She says as all of you collectively wave a drunken goodbye to her.
There's a string of words that fill the air that you're pretty sure aren't English as everyone heads towards the water together.
"What was that?" Fanboy says, his voice very loud as he squints in the direction of whoever spoke.
"No idea. Let's swim." Payback answers him. Before Fanboy can speak he's being dragged into the water. As he's pulled along he grabs onto Coyote, and the group of them tumble into the waves.
You watch them go, your face warm from the alcohol and mind blissfully fuzzy. "Mav will kill us if they drown." Bob says from next to you, his arm slung across Phoenix's shoulders.
"Oh don't be a downer, Bob. Let's join them!" Phoenix laughs before taking his hand and taking off towards the water.
In her drunken state however, she ends up doing more of a sideways run than anything, leaving you clutching your stomach as you laugh at Bob's attempt to steady her.
"They're pretty cute, huh?" An arm across your shoulders makes you jump, but doesn't yet suppress the giggles escaping you.
Hangman stands next to you, his smile wide as he watches his friends make complete fools of themselves.
Reaching up behind Hangman's back and resting your hand on his shoulder, you finally stifle your laughter, "Sure. But don't let Phoenix hear you say that or she'll-"
"Oh darlin' believe me, I've heard just about everything on what Phoenix can do to a man, and.. don't repeat this but," He leans down to whisper in your ear, "She kind of scares me sometimes."
A laugh shakes your body as you give Hangman a playful shove, the movement making you stumble a bit, "Oooh I fucking knew it."
He holds a finger up to you, "Do not repeat that." He warns, but the slurring of his words takes any hint of a threatening tone out of his voice.
You cover your mouth with both hands, the two of you letting out silent laughs. "Holy shit I'm so drunk." You wheeze as you lean over, both hands on your knees.
"Oh!" Hangman claps his hands, his voice still shaking slightly with laughter, "Y'know who else would be just so cute together?"
You look up, wiping the tears from the corner of your eyes as you let out a breath, "Who?"
He leans in, a shit eating grin on his face, "You and Rooster."
You shove at his chest, "Oh shut up." You say, shaking your head as you walk towards the water. The sand grows cooler and the laughter of the others grows louder as you get closer to the gentle waves lapping onto the shore.
"Oh, come on! Don't pretend like you don't have feelings for him, Finch." Hangman practically whines as he follows you, his hand grabbing yours.
He pulls your hand up and spins you, the motion making you laugh, "Who I have feelings for is none of your damn business." You say, patting Hangman's cheek.
He rolls his eyes and lets out an exaggerated sigh, "Oh, but I know who has feelings for youuu." His voice grows into that of a sing-song tone.
You raise an eyebrow at him and cross your arms, "Bullshit."
Responding with nothing but a grin, Hangman steps next to you and points a little ways down towards the water. You follow his finger and find your eyes meeting Rooster's.
With a wide smile on his face, he gives you a wave before being tackled to the ground by Coyote. You watch as his curls disappear under the water, only to resurface a moment later. Your face grows warm at the way his laughter fills the air, his smile shining under the moon.
"Damn, you're whipped girl." Hangman mutters next to you. You jump, having momentarily forgotten he was there.
"Bagman you better not be flirting with my wingwoman!" Phoenix calls over to the pair of you, her hand outstretched as she points to the man in question.
Hangman points to his own chest before looking around and then back to Phoenix, "Who, me?"
"Yeah, you. Who else?" Phoenix asks as she walks over, completely soaked and flushed.
You chuckle, "Don't worry, he's not. Besides, I wouldn't let him." You reassure her. She grins at you and nudges your shoulder with her own, "I know you wouldn't."
"Ouch." Hangman deadpans.
"If you're not… being yourself, then what are you doing?" Phoenix asks, Bob joining her side.
Grinning again, Hangman pats your shoulder, "Well I was just about to show our dear Finch here a little something."
At the look on Phoenix's face, Hangman immediately back tracks, "Okay, wait. No, not like that. Here-"
Hangman pauses as he chuckles, his voice still wavering a little as tries to collect himself. You begin to wonder if he's actually serious about his insight on Rooster liking you or if he's just… very very drunk.
"So, earlier, right? During pool, I told Rooster that his ears turn red when he lies." Hangman explains to you, his smile wider than you've ever seen it before.
Oh he's definitely way more drunk than you thought.
You glance towards Rooster, who is still splashing around like a kid with the others.
"Well, do they?" You ask, turning back to Hangman.
"Nope." He states.
You cock your head to the side, a confused smile playing on your lips, "Then why did you tell him that?"
"Because I can do this." Hangman says simply before cupping his hands around his mouth and yelling for Rooster.
The curly haired man pauses mid run and turns on the spot, swaying slightly as he looks over, "Yeah?"
"Hey, do you love Finch?" Hangman asks, the question almost making you choke as your hand shoots up to your mouth in shock.
Eyes wide, you look over to Rooster.
Who is covering his goddamn ears.
"No…" He says slowly, his hands clasped around his head as he stares doe eyed at the crowd looking back at him.
Your mouth falls open and Phoenix reaches over and pushes it closed.
With a pleased look, Hangman looks back to you, "What did I say?"
But you don't look at him.
You don't even acknowledge him.
Because all you can see is Rooster.
You just see him with his stupid hands still over his stupid ears and his stupid curls.
"Stupid." You mutter, your eyes locking with Rooster's.
"Wha- me?" Hangman asks, his voice distant to you.
"No. Me." You say as you begin walking towards the man who has not taken his eyes off of you since he told the most obvious lie you've ever heard.
As you near him, he finally uncovers his ears, his eyes wide, "Finch, I-"
He never finishes his sentence because you're grabbing the front of his Hawaiian shirt and pulling him towards you. Your lips connect with such fervor that you almost surprise yourself.
His lips feel soft against yours and the feeling it fills you with is something so unexplainable because God, finally.
Pulling back to catch your breath you look up at him, hands still clenched tightly in the fabric of his shirt.
He stares back, his expression that of shock. In an instant it hits you what you just did and you step back, hands fidgeting stupidly in the air, "I- you- sorry, I-" You give up as you let your face fall into your hands.
"Sorry." You mutter again, your voice muffled.
Gentle hands on your wrists pull them away from your face. You blink your eyes open as your chin is lifted up to Rooster's face, his hand moving to cup your cheek.
"Stop apologizing." He says quietly before leaning in and kissing you. What you can only explain as relief floods through you, making your knees go weak.
Or maybe it's the fact that Rooster's kissing you because holy shit can he kiss. Reaching up, your hands find the back of his neck and are tangled in his hair as you return the kiss.
His hands travel down your body and find their home at your waist, pulling you impossibly closer to him.
You kiss him harder before breaking off just enough to breathe. Pressing your forehead against his, you can't help the smile that grows on your face.
Leaning back slightly to look at him, your hand traces its way to his face, thumbing over the scar on his chin. He stares at you, his eyes filled with something that you've never quite seen before.
Looking at him. Just… looking at him, you feel at home.
"What is it?" You ask, watching as his eyes deepen in thought. He blinks at you, a smile playing on his lips.
"I love you." He says simply, his voice quiet. He kisses you again, this time more gentle.
You feel all the meaning and love behind it and can't help but absolutely and completely melt into it.
"I love you." You say against his lips. You can feel him smile and it feels as though he's the fucking sun.
You can taste the alcohol and salt from the ocean on him but everything feels so wonderful and perfect that it only adds to it all.
He loves you.
Bradley Bradshaw loves you.
And you love him.
-
Unknown to you during yours and Rooster's exchange, the others are just watching as if their favorite show is on.
"Told you I'd be the one to get them together." Hangman says as he looks away from the pair of you, his signature grin plastered on his face.
"It would've happened one way or another." Phoenix says, her arm slung across Bob's shoulders, who nods along with her words.
Pushing up his glasses, Bob chuckles, "True. But I'm glad we can finally stop suffering as they cast longing glances at each other."
"God but imagine what we have to put up with now." Fanboy says, shuddering.
Letting out a sigh, Hangman cracks his knuckles, "Oh we're about to see some grass ass PDA. All thanks to everyone's favorite matchmaker." He says, pointing to himself.
"Oh, you cocky son of a-" Payback starts before slamming Hangman into the water.
The others follow suit, their screams of laughter pulling you and Rooster apart to look at them.
"The hell are they doing?" You ask as you watch Coyote all but chuck Fanboy into the water.
Rooster hums as his arms snake around your waist, "Dunno, but it looks fun. C'mon!" He shouts before scooping you up and running towards the waves.
You let out a yell of surprise and grip onto him, "Bradley Bradshaw you put me down!" You shout, laughter shaking your voice.
"Well if you insist, Honey!" He bellows before throwing you into the water.
The chill of the ocean shocks you at first but then fills you with vengeance as you surface, "Oh you're so dead!" You yell at him.
You're certain that true fear crosses Rooster's face before he takes off running, screaming for help.
You may love him, but that won't keep you from absolutely obliterating him in the ocean.

Letters to our Soldiers
Tumblr media
Summary: Bradley finds himself making a Christmas wish on a letter from a stranger as he spends another Christmas alone ten thousand miles away from home.
Character: Bradley Bradshaw and F!reader (no use of Y/N)
Word Count: 1,208
Warnings: None
A/N: This is my third entry into @sailor-aviator winter challenger. My prompt was Merry Christmas, though I did also use this as a springboard for a possible series that I hope to start soon. Now, is this late... so very much so. Did life decide to send me into the new year with one finale kick…. Also yes. Is this also the first personal thing I’ve written for myself in a long time…also yes. But I had so much fun doing it and it feels good to get back to writing again. I hope you all have a phenomenal New Year and you find all the things you were looking for…. Enjoy some Christmas in February!
Tumblr media
Bradley jumped off the ladder of his F-18 and shivered against the wind that blew across the deck. The sweat beading up along his brow and making his curls stick there was now making him feel even colder as he saluted the handful of privates who came to tighten his jet down to the deck and then lower it away so they could head back into port. Their practice drills finally done.
Rushing inside he tucked his helmet under his arm and headed right for the debriefing room. If he was lucky their CO would have nothing of note to say and send them all back to their bunks. Bradley wanted to change and get under his blankets. There was heat on the USS Dauntless but the steal walls and floors always seemed to hold onto the weather outside better then they did the temperature inside. Meaning right now it felt like walking through an ice box.
“Hey Bradshaw, you coming with us tonight or not?” That was Fitz’s voice echoing down the hall.
Bradley paused in the hall and pressed himself against the wall to let another officer pass by him as he waited for Fitz to catch up to him. “Na, I think I’m just going to stay in and try to catch up on some sleep.”
Fitz rolled his eyes and groaned as he walked in stride with Bradley to the briefing room. “Come on man it’s the first time we’ve seen land in weeks and you’re telling me you’d rather stay on this floating tin can then come and enjoy the night out with us?”
“That is exactly what I’m saying,” Bradley quipped back. “I intend to spend my leave sleeping and resting in my own bunk. Not eating bread and water in the brig.”
Fitz rolled his eyes and punched Bradley’s shoulder. Waving him off like he was a lost caused. “First of all, that happened one time and secondly you’re still boring.”
Bradley just shook his head and plopped down on one of the wooden seats. His excuse was the truth. Mostly. The other reason though was currently burning a hole in the pocket of his flight suit. A perfectly folded letter that still smelled faintly of warm vanilla. A letter from a stranger he’d never met. Natasha had signed him up for one of those letter writing programs for soldiers. He’d been annoyed at first, but now he looked forward to each and every one of them.
“We’ll be heading into port in a few hours and I expect all of you to act like the officers you are. Dismissed,” their CO finally called after the debrief had ended.
“Last chance Bradshaw,” Fitz said already halfway out of the door. “It’s Christmas Eve!”
“Leave the man alone Fitz. He’s got big and important plans for the night,” Omaha said with a laugh. Dragging Fitz out of the doorway as a chorus of other officers and enlisted men chattered loudly, interspersed with laughter and off key singing which Bradley just chuckled at.
After a quick shower he changed back into his dark t-shirt and pants laying back on his lower bunk and taking out the letter. The writing on the front was in pretty, dark cursive. Whoever this woman was she had the prettiest handwriting Bradley had ever seen. He pressed the letter to his nose and breathed in the warm scent of vanilla that still only faintly lingered there. It would be a hard day when the smell faded from this one too. Opening the letter, he tucked one of his hands back under his head and smiled softly.
Dear Soldier,
I don’t know what time zone you’re in, or even what country you’re stationed at, but where ever you are I hope you’re not spending Christmas Eve alone.
Bradley laughed. “Sorry to disappoint sweetheart,” he muttered. Though he did wonder if this technically counted as spending the day alone if he was reading her words…
I for one will likely be spending it at the hospital. One of my co-workers, Mandy--she was the one involved in the blue cupcake fiasco a few months ago—anyways she has two adorable little boys and so I took her shifts so she could spend the holidays with them. I don’t mind though so don’t go feeling bad for me or anything. I like what I do and it’s nice to get to spend time with the patients over Christmas. Especially when some of them don’t have any family to come visit them. You should see the nurse’s station all decked out in different decorations for just about every different holiday celebrated among us.
Bradley’s smile grew wider as his heart swelled in his chest reading over the words. This woman was so kind and bright. He could so easily imagine her sitting at a nurse’s station and painstakingly writing to him everything that came to her mind as she looked over her floor. He imagined she had the most beautiful smile to match her pretty words. He found himself longing, as he often did, to ask her questions back. He wanted to know everything about her and he wanted to tell her everything about him. He wanted her to know that he reread the twelve other letters shed written him nearly every day. That he held them close to his chest when the nights got dark or the sea was rough. He wanted to tell her that he had them memorized. Every friend she mentioned and patient she cared for; he knew them all. He wanted to tell her that they had the same favorite color and favorite Girl Scout Cookie flavor. He wished her letters came with a return address.
Alright well it’s getting late and I have to head out for another round but I want to make sure I get this in the mail to you so you get it in some kind of speedy order. I don’t really know how to say this without coming off like a stalker or some kind of wierdo, and I really hope you don’t thinks it’s weird but I included my address at the bottom of this page just in case you wanted to write back to me.
Bradley’s heart flpped and he sat up so quickly his head nearly hit the top bunk. Flicking his eyes to the bottom of the page he did indeed she her return address written there. His thumb brushed across her name and the letters and numbers beneath it.
I know the service is random and I’ve already written more letter than I was supposed to but, I don’t know, getting to write to you these past few months has felt nice. You really helped me, whoever you are out there, and I just want to keep writing to you if I can.
I hope wherever you are you’re staying safe and that m letters have been a little piece of home you’ve been missing.
Merry Christmas Soldier.
“Merry Christmas sweetheart,” Bradley whispered. He looked down at the address one last time and then reached under his bunk into one of the drawers there. Pulling out a notebook and his pen he began his own letter.

Jake told you about the bbq pool party happening on July 4th, he really did, but you were nervous for two reasons; you didn’t have a suit and you were anxious for him to see you in one. While you were having breakfast on the patio the day before, he was going over how he’d be gone shortly in the morning to do a flyover at the base but then he’d be back at eleven with the others. He insisted you invite Brynne, Serena and Dom but Dom always heads back home to spend the holiday weekend with his family.
“I think I’ve got all your favorite foods for tomorrow, and some hard seltzers in the fridge by the bar. Is there anything else you need?” he asked and you bit your lip. “What is it, Sugar?”
“I don’t have a nice suit to wear,” you admitted sheepishly.
“No big deal, let’s go shopping,” he wiped the corners of his mouth with a napkin and pulled away from the table.
“No, wait–” you grabbed hold of his forearm, he looked down at you. “Can–can I go by myself?”
He opened his mouth but then closed it. “Sure. I’ll have Reynolds take you. Buy a suit for every day of the week, okay?” He kissed your hand that was on his arm.
So you did, you bought the ones that made you feel good in them and decided to wear a blue two-piece with white stars. You also bought a blue wrap to wear over it as a safety blanket when you were in front of Jake. Jake kissed you goodbye before he left to fly and you slept for another hour before getting up and getting ready.
You’ve just finished putting on red lipstick that matches the red ribbon tied in your hair when Jake gets home. His flight suit is tied around his waist, his hair still a little sweaty and his aviators are hanging off his nose.
“Don’t you look pretty,” he smiles, tossing his keys and wallet on his dresser. You’ve moved all your makeup stuff in his room, he bought a vanity for you to use along with the makeup you use and a bunch of stuff you’ve only dreamt about using.
“You look hot, I mean–” you shake your head, “you’re sweaty.” He smirks at your comment but doesn’t really acknowledge it.
“Yeah, it’s a scorcher out there,” he says, sifting through his drawers for an American flag style swim trunks. “Make sure to put on sunscreen. Everyone should be here in an hour.”
“Okay…do you need my help with anything?”
“All taken care of, Sugar. Too bad you’re all dolled up, was gonna see if you’d want to save on water and take a shower with me.” He stands in front of you, tracing the contour of your face with his fingers until they’re under your chin. He tilts your head up.
You shift in your chair making sure your wrap is covering you. Jake notices, his brows furrowing but again, he doesn’t say anything. You’re thankful for that.
“Maybe next time,” you finally respond coyly.
“Okay, Sugar,” his thumb drags over your bottom lip. “I love this color red on you.”
And then he’s gone heading towards his bathroom singing the chorus to ‘Danger Zone’ before shutting the door.
***
The party is in full swing and you feel a little more at ease when Serena and Brynne arrive. They gushed about your new suit and admired the other ones you bought. As soon as the three of you entered the pool area, Rooster smiled at Serena who quickly went over to him by the pool. He was standing on the first step, beer in hand and a bucket hat on his head.
“He better ask for her number today, or Dom is gonna kick his ass,” Brynne sighs watching your friend flirt with the pilot.
“He hasn’t yet?”
“Nope. And S keeps dropping hints but he’s oblivious.”
“I’ll say something to Jake. I know Rooster’s crazy about her,” you smile then notice Phoenix by the bar. She keeps glancing at Brynne while talking with Bob, her eyes traveling over Brynne’s cherry red suit. “Hey, Brynne, have you met Natasha yet?”
You take Brynne’s hand dragging her around the pool towards the bar and in front of Bob and Natasha.
“Hey guys, this is Brynne. My friend and coworker. Brynne, this is Bob and Natasha,” you introduce. Brynne’s eyes glitter when she meets Natasha’s and they shake hands and Natasha offers to get her a drink.
They move to the other end of the bar initiating small talk and that makes you happy. Warm, strong arms wrap around your waist and hot lips are on your cheek in a kiss.
“Hey Sugar, are you thirsty?”
You nod and he moves behind the bar to get one of your hard seltzers, he pops the tab and slips it inside a coozie. He adds a steel straw then hands it to you.
“Did you put sunscreen on?” he asks taking a pull from his own beer.
“Umm…” you suck on your straw, eyes downcast.
“Let’s put some on before you go in the pool,” he pats the side of your hip affectionately. “C’mon.”
“Jake, I–”
He gives you no choice and tugs you along towards the house. Coyote and Payback say hello to you, they’re seated on the lounge chairs discussing something about football. Fanboy is relaxing in the sun.
The cool air feels good from the dry heat outside as you enter the house, Jake still leading you through the house and into the bathroom on the first floor near the laundry room. He opens the closet grabbing a tube of sunscreen.
“I can put it on myself,” you say quietly, arms crossed over your chest making sure the wrap is still secure around you.
“I can get your back,” he smiles clicking the top open. “And you can rub my back, too.”
“Jake, I don’t–” you cover your face with your hands.
“Woah, hey, what’s going on?”
You shake your head, eyes closed.
“Sugar, talk to me please. What’s wrong?”
“I’m self-conscious,” you mutter.
“Self-conscious of what?” he takes hold of your hands and you let him remove them from your face. You open your eyes to stare at your joined hands between you.
“Of how I look. I’m not tall and toned like Serena is and I don’t have the nice curves like Brynne does…I’m…I’m not–”
“y/n, look at me,” his voice is soft. You force your eyes up, his thumbs are rubbing the backs of your hands. “You’re beautiful, exactly the way you are. Your height, your size, your curves, all of it. I told you you’ve been tempting me since day one and I mean it, you don’t even realize how much. If you don’t want to take off your wrap yet, that’s fine, I’ll get Serena to come and help you.”
“No, she’s busy with Rooster,” you shake your head. You take a deep breath. “You can do it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah,” you nod removing your hands from his. Your eyes stare at his white tank top covered chest as your fingers untie the wrap. You continue to stare at the center of his chest as you pull it off your shoulders and he remains silent.
“Damn,” he breathes and you finally look up at his face. His green eyes are widening as he moves over your suit. “As I live and breathe, darlin’ you sure are a sight for sore eyes.”
Your cheeks are burning from revealing your suit and from his words. He reaches behind you to get the sunscreen and he pops it open again. He starts at your shoulders, making sure to rub it in under the straps and over the hills of your breasts. Your heart is hammering and you wonder if he can feel it. His fingers tickle your stomach as he rubs in lotion there, and goosebumps appear when he gets the sides.
“Can you turn around for me?” he asks softly and you do. He squirts more lotion on his hand and starts at your shoulders.
You watch him in the mirror, his face in concentration and you avoid your own gaze in the mirror. He moves your hair over your shoulder and you feel his hand slip down behind the clasp at the center of your back.
“Here,” you murmur and unhook it so the only thing holding your suit up are your hands cupping it to your breasts. Your eyes meet in the mirror, questions burning in both of your gazes but neither of you voices them as he continues to spread sunscreen on your back.
Did his hands get hotter? You try to concentrate on your breathing, the tips of his fingers dip a little below the waistband of your bottoms. More goosebumps, more heat. Part of you wants to remove your top and see what happens, part of you wants him to do it.
To your surprise, Jake hooks the clasp back together and brings your hair back into place.
“Can you do me now?” he asks your reflection.
You nod as you readjust  your breasts in your suit so they’re more fitted and you can see Jake watches your every move. The way he’s looking at you fills you with a bit more confidence each time. When you pick up the lotion bottle he yanks off his tank top and turns around, you choke on the air you’re breathing because he’s so tan and muscular. He has freckles on his shoulders and a small birthmark on the very low part of his back. It looks like a heart.
You squire the lotion in your palm and then swipe your hand over his whole back. His muscles tightened and you were mesmerized by the strength of them as you rub in the sunscreen. You make sure to get his shoulders and up into his neck. Your hand curves with his spine as you go lower and get the sides of his stomach. Without even thinking, your nail traces over that birthmark, Jake takes a deep breath.
“Okay, turn around,” you say.
When he does, he crowds your space, his arms caging you in between him and the counter.
“I already got my stomach, can you put some on my nose?” he asks scrunching his nose in indication.
“Yeah,” you bite your lip and put a little more on your two fingers. You stroke your fingers over his nose and onto his chin, pressing the excess under his eyes and onto his ears. When you’re finished, you keep his face held in your hands.
You stare at each other for a second before lips are on lips and you’re somehow on the counter with your legs wrapped around his waist. His body is hard and hot and muscled against yours, his hands pulling you into him, your back bowing so you’re as close as you can be. Your fingers are in his hair and he moves one hand to cup and squeeze your breast. You moan into his mouth and then he shifts the suit down, his thumb and forefinger tweaking your nipple. You moan again and Jake moves his kisses down your jaw and to your neck and then his mouth is covering your breast.
His mouth is hot and his tongue is slick and wet as it circles over your nipple. His teeth dig into the swell of your breast while his tongue flicks and presses on your bud.
“Jake,” you sigh falling against the mirror watching through hooded eyes as he opens his. He keeps his gaze on you as he shifts to your other breast, his hand yanking the suit down. He doesn’t close his eyes until his mouth is on you again, a contented sigh coming from him and you keep your fingers curled in his hair.
The noises he makes as he suckles on you electrifies your blood cells and you need him closer. It’s when you start to grind your hips against him that you yank on his head. His mouth releases your breast with a pop and his eyes are bright green.
“We haven’t–we shouldn’t–” you’re panting trying to get the words out because so many thoughts are racing through your mind.
You’ve opened up to him more, you’re more comfortable with him, you’re sleeping in his bed more frequently but the paperwork and Betty’s health are at the forefront. This is just an arrangement, he’s said you tempt him and he’s been tempting you a lot more too lately.
“You’re right,” he nods but peppers kisses along your breasts before tucking them back into your suit. “We have guests. I got carried away.”
“I’m sorry,” you say.
“No need to be sorry, Sugar,” he smiles crookedly and shifts on his feet. “I need a few minutes before I can go back out there.”
Your eyes immediately fly down to his waist where you can see a bulge over the stars and stripes of his suit.
“Oh. Oops,” you bite your lip trying to hide your smile.
“Yeah, oops,” he murmurs, tugging your lip from your teeth into a kiss. He groans when you kiss him back excitedly. “Okay, trouble, time to head out before we’re discovered.”
“You’re the troublemaker,” you tease hopping down from the sink. You pick up your wrap and adjust yourself again.
***
You went back outside and stepped into the pool water, you also needed to cool down after what you and Jake did. The rest were in the pool and Jake jumped in with a big splash then took you in his arms. Rooster started to complain he was hungry an hour later. You were the only one left in the pool floating on one of the floaties Jake bought special for the day.
Rooster and Serena were sitting on the pool steps and Brynne and Phoenix were sitting on the edge talking. You watched Jake as he gathered all of the grill stuff, and he even put on an apron that said ‘Kiss the Chef’. You suck on your drink through your straw watching his arms flex as he cleans the grill, a sheen of sweat glistening on his shoulders.
You slip off the floaty and exit the pool just as Serena and Rooster wade in deeper, their fingers loosely linked. Jake’s eyes are on you as you walk towards him, water rolling over your body and when you’re close enough you lean up and peck his lips softly. His eyes flutter and he grins.
“What was that for?”
“Your apron says to kiss the chef, so I did,” you giggle and finish off your drink.
“I’ll kiss you too, Hangman,” Roster makes kissy noises behind you.
“Hard pass, Bradshaw. Go get your kabobs, man,” then he turns his attention back on you. “Did you put more sunscreen on?”
“Yeah, but it won’t work. I’ll still burn,” you shrug then turn around but Jake swats at your ass and you yelp.
You grab another seltzer and the start taking pictures with Serena, Brynne and Phoenix. Jake and Bradley look your way when you all squeal as Coyote does a cannonball in the water. Phoenix and Brynne exit the pool getting cozy at the bar, Brynne even kisses Phoenix’s cheek for a picture.
“That’s good, Brynne is chill compared to the last girl Phoenix was with,” Jake comments.
“Yeah, your Sugar sure is sweetening up our group, ain’t she?” Rooster nudges Jake’s shoulder then goes over to Serena who is struggling with her beer bottle.
When Jake has the food on the grill, he retreats inside to grab the extra plate of watermelon Rhea had cut up for the day. Jake always makes sure she spends holidays with her own family and he brought the plate out to you. You snatch a piece and take a bite, the juice dribbles down your chin and into your cleavage. You hold the piece up to Jake and he takes a bite, juice dribbling down his chin as well.
You giggle then lean on the pool edge to swipe it from his lips. You suck it off your thumb.
“See, you’re trouble,” he cocks his head to the side and starts to stand.
“Leave the watermelon,” you tell him and snatch the floaty. You climb back on and make grabby hands for the plate which he hands you. “Thank you.”
The food is great as you all sit down to eat it and then Rooster runs off to grab the fireworks he brought. He sets them up with the help of Bob. Jake hands you some water because all you’ve had all afternoon are seltzers. The dry heat is really getting to you and your suit is starting to feel uncomfortable which only means one thing.
You’ve got a sun burn.
You sit on Jake’s lap as Bob sets the fireworks off and you start to shiver now that the sun is no longer in the sky. Rooster and Serena were making out as the fireworks lit up the sky. You remember to tell Jake that Serena wants Bradley to ask for her number.
“He’s an idiot, he has no game,” Jake shakes his head, “I’ll tell him.”
Everyone is gone by eleven o’clock and Jake tuts when he sees how red you are as you remove your makeup in his bathroom.
“Sugar, you’re so sunburnt. You didn’t put more on after I did it for you, did you?”
“I did, I swear! But I told you…sunscreen doesn’t work on me for some reason,” you flinch when you dry your face off with the towel.
He sighs heavily. “Take a cool shower and I’ll put aloe on you.”
You do what he says and it hurts when you put on the satin pajama set. The straps are thin but hit your burning skin in just the right way. When you exit the bathroom, Jake is already showered and tugging on the draw strings of his basketball shorts.
“C’mere my little tomato,” he gestures to his bed and you crawl on it delicately. You lay down and lift your shorts up higher on your thighs and the bottom of your shirt. “Sugar…”
“Put it on please,” your body trembles as you shiver some more. Being in the heat all day is finally escaping you as you’re in the controlled temperature of the house.
Jake rubs it on your thighs first, the cooling sensation of the aloe feels wonderful. It’s colder on your stomach, his fingers brush the underside of your boobs but you’re in too much pain to really get excited about it.
“You’re gonna have to take your top off so it doesn’t cling to your skin, that’s not going to feel good,” he shakes his head. “You don’t have to sleep in here if you’re uncomfortable–”
“No, can I please? Your sheets are cooler than mine,” you pout and sit up delicately.
“Of course you can,” he smiles gently. You begin to lift your top off but it pinches at your shoulders and you cry out. “I got it.”
Jake removes it as softly as he can, folds it, places it at the foot of his bed and puts more aloe on his hands. He’s gentle as he rubs it over your shoulders and down your arms. By the time he gets to your back, it’s already dried on your front. He puts some on your hands and more on your chest because that’s where it’s the worst.
“I’m getting you SPF 100 so this doesn’t happen again.” he sets the bottle on his nightstand. Your picture in a small frame.
“It won’t work–” you start to say slipping under his sheets.
“Yes it will. SPF 30 was no help to you, Sugar.”
You sigh as you settle into his sheets, the coolness helps with the aloe but you’re shivering like crazy. Jake grabs your hands and blows on them.
“If you wake up and it still hurts, I’ll put more on you.”
“You don’t mind I’ll be sleeping with my top off?” your teeth chatter.
“Sugar, I wouldn’t mind if you decided to sleep nude,” he kisses your cheek and shuts the lights off.

Diners and Late Nights (CH 1)
Ch 1/Ch 2 (Work and Distractions)
Hangman slipped out of the crowded bar, leaving the chorus of celebrating aviators behind him, and started walking towards the Boardwalk. It was quiet, no tourists this time of the year, so barely anyone was milling around. Shops closed, light from dying lamp posts, the beach dark.
He got far enough that the bar was a blip in the distance. He reckoned by the time he got back, most of his classma- former classmates would have gone home to wherever. The bar doors closed for the night.
He leaned his forearms at the railing, hearing the waves crash on the beach, but only see glimpses of the water due to the moon’s reflection. He sighed as he pulled out a new pack of cigarettes, unwrapping them and pulling one out.
He brought one between his teeth and lit it with a lighter, his other hand blocking the wind. He took a slow deep drag, held it in, breath again, 5 seconds, and out. He watched the smoke dissipate in the air, before he brought the cig to his lips again.
He won Top Gun.
After all those weeks of intense training. All these past few years in the Navy. All the years he spent studying, working, and training his ass off. He got the trophy. He should have been elated. He was, he swear he was, but all he felt was, nothing.
When his name was called he felt elated, as if a weight was lifted off his shoulders, relief. He smiled, laughed with Javy as he hooked an arm around his shoulder. Shook hands. Gave a grin and sarcastic remarks to his cohort.
It died down.
Not the noise. Never the bright lives of the people around him, smiling, laughing, celebrating. From the classrooms, hangar, to the bar. All of them were celebrating, and he was smiling too, but it felt forced. Everything around him felt out of focus, as if he wasn’t fully there. Going through the motions of getting inside his truck and driving to the bar. Ordering a beer, but letting it get cold and stale.
He won.
He felt relieved.
Then nothing.
He looked up, the sky was devoid of any stars, the moon was bright though.
He pulled out his phone, and opened the messaging app.
He scrolled down and pressed on his Dad’s contact.
Stilted conversations. Unsolicited advice or criticisms. One word answers. Last message was sent 6 weeks ago.
He closed the chat.
Javy was probably back at the barracks sleeping. He had an early flight tomorrow.
Hell, he was pretty sure everyone else had an upcoming flight.
He took another drag of a cigarette.
He hoped that winning Top Gun would mean they could expedite his deployment. Better to have something to do, right?
He closed his eyes and leaned forward, groaning as he ran a hand through his hair with his other hand.
“A penny for your thoughts, Lieutenant Seresin?” a voice asked and Jake turned around
It took him a second to realise who it was, he’d never seen Admiral Simpson in regular clothing.
“Sir,” he said, straightening up, stubbing his cigarette on the railing.
“At ease, Lieutenant,” Cyclone drawled, walking to lean on the railing beside him. “I’m not in uniform, and we’re off the clock. No need for formalities right now.”
Jake hesitantly nodded, throwing the cigarette bud away in a trashcan nearby.
“Didn’t think of you as a smoker,” Cyclone started casually.
“Not usually one, first time in months,” Seresin said, shrugging.
“A celebration for winning Top Gun?”
“Nah, ‘just needed to clear my head.”
“Hmm, I get that, you’ll be needing a lot of those times when you go up the ranks in the Navy, try not to rely on that thing too much.”
Jake felt a flash of irritation, “I don’t smoke a lot. Anyways,” Seresin said before giving the older man a smirk, “You think I’ll go up the ranks, Admiral? That seems like a compliment.”
Cyclone simply grunted in response. “That attitude will both help and curse you up the ranks.”
Seresin simply shrugged, “I know.”
“You know, I got your deployment request,” Cyclone started, making Jake stiffen.
“Yeah?” Jake said, trying to play it casually. He wished he didn’t snub out his cigarette, but he wasn’t rude enough to smoke in front of someone who wasn’t smoking.
“Pretty early timeline, don’t you think?”
“Got nothin’ better to do,” Jake said, shrugging. “Top Gun’s over, time to move-on to the next thing, right, sir?”
Cyclone gave him a look that made Jake hunch his shoulders before straightening up, “What?” He said glaring.
“I probably should have expected it, but I did not think you were a workaholic, Lieutenant.” Simpson said coolly.
Seresin shrugged, “I like to keep busy, sir, what else would I do?”
“Hmmm, you like breakfast Lieutenant.”
Jake looked at the admiral with a raised brow, “... Yes-?”
“Do you have anything you have to do tonight?”
“No-”
“Perfect, meet me in this diner, my treat, I need to properly congratulate this year’s Top Gun winner anyways.” Simpson said.
“You gave me my trophy and shook my hand already, though-?”
“Defying orders, Lieutenant?”
“I thought we were off the clock!”
-----
Seresin stood in front of the brightly lit diner. Before stepping inside. Noticing the classic red seats, 80s decorations, and bright neon lights. A little ring from a bell on the door.
“Be there in a sec!” A voice shouted from the back where the kitchen presumably was.
“Seresin,” Cyclone called out from the counter. “Almost thought you weren’t coming.”
He almost didn’t.
“It was a walk to my truck,” Jake answered instead, sitting down next to the man, opening the menu in front of him.
“Order whatever you want, I already ordered,” Cyclone said, sipping from his mug.
“Coffee this late at night, sir?”
“No, hot chocolate, they make theirs themselves, it’s very good.”
“I’ll take your word for it,” Jake said, nodding. “How’d you know this place, anyways?”
“You stay around these parts long enough, you start to know where the best 24hr dining option is. Been going here for years. Tastes better at night.”
Jake couldn’t argue with that.
An older lady came out from the back, “What can I get for you, honey?”
“Just the platter, ma’am, bacon and scrambled eggs,” Jake said, smiling. “And a hot chocolate too, please.”
“Aww aren’t you a polite young man,” she said, making Jake flush and duck his head. Barely anyone in the Navy would call him polite. “Beau, bring him around more often.” She said before going back to the kitchen.
“So you can get along with people,” Cyclone mused.
“I know how to get people to like me, I just choose not to, not worth the effort, most of the time,” Jake said, reaching forward for the case of toothpicks, shaking one out to his hand and bringing it to his mouth.
“So, you usually bring your subordinates to diners?”
“No,” Cyclone said simply. “Just the ones that look like they need a warm meal in them.”
“You’re the airboss, maybe you should do something about the slop in the cafeteria.”
Cyclone snorted, “I tried like many before me, and it remains one of my greatest failures,” Cyclone said drily. “Plus, it wouldn’t be the Navy without shitty food, would it?”
“I suppose not, sir.”

Moving In Stereo
Many moons ago I applied to the Harringrove Zine with a concept: what if Steve was a lifeguard with Billy at the pool. I ended up writing a completely different concept for the zine after way too many talks with @adelacreations but Lifeguard Steve has been waiting in the wings, ready to promote the Zine Preorder that opened today! The zine is made to support charity and there’s many ways that you can back it and read the crazy thing I had to write after finishing this, and all the incredible stuff the other contributors have come up with. We’re so excited to share it with you. And now without further ado: lifeguard Steve
Billy Hargrove had a new title: King of the Poolside. The whole town fawned over him, all the suburban moms who asked Steve about Billy’s schedule and blatantly stared at his body, all the teen girls who made eyes at him. Even the little kids liked him. Whenever Steve would sub in the aquatots class there would be a chorus of questions about, “Mr. Biwwy.”
It was starting to piss Steve off.
Steve didn’t mind not being King anymore. Billy could have the crown, shove it up his ass for all Steve cared. But they didn’t know the real Billy Hargrove. Despite a teary, drugged apology that night when Steve drove him home after the Byers, and the occasional conversation in the break room, Billy Hargrove remained as he always was: an asshole.
“Stick to your stand, ” Steve grumbled when Billy leaned against Steve’s leg, one golden shoulder pressing into Steve’s calf. Billy was hot all the time. Steve swore he could see steam rising off Billy’s shoulders when he rose out of the pool. Somehow he managed to do it in slow motion. The asshole.
“You can see all of the pool from your stand, though,” Billy smiled and snapped his gum, his eyes hidden by mirrored aviators.
“Then we’ll switch.”
He had to remind himself that Billy was an asshole, because for one millisecond Billy frowned and he almost looked hurt.
“Can’t be near me for even a second, huh?” Billy looked up, but his face was impossible to read behind his sunglasses. They only reflected Steve back to himself. His pink cheeks from Billy standing too close. His slightly wilted hair, curling at the ends from the heat. Billy was so shiny, chest gleaming, golden hair glassy and lustrous. Steve could see himself reflected in all the weirdest ways.
Steve shrugged. “Not my job to tell you what to do.”
Billy snorted, “You act like it enough.”
“Whatever,” Steve rolled his eyes. “One of your fan club is coming over.”
It could be splashing, but it nearly sounds like Billy muttered, “Showtime.”
It’s Karen Wheeler, tottering in a new swimsuit and heels that seem frankly dangerous close to the water’s edge. Steve twitched, the heat from where Billy’s shoulder was pressed to his leg almost throbbing with awareness.
“Hello, Steve,” She smiled too warmly. “Billy.”
“Dig the new suit, Mrs. Wheeler,” Billy pressed his sunglasses up his nose and gave her a toothy smile.
“Thank you, Billy,” She preened, and stretched out on a towel next to Steve’s stand. “The sun’s moved over here, so…”
Billy nodded, leaning into Steve’s leg, “Oh, yeah. Gotta chase those rays.”
She laughed like it’s the funniest thing she’d ever heard, and for some reason Billy did too, his white teeth gleaming.
Steve shuffled in his seat.
“Thanks for your help, Harrington,” Billy punched his leg softly, and Steve glared at him. “See you later Mrs. Wheeler.”
“Bye, Billy,” She called out hopefully. She has a bag slung over the back of her chair that reminded Steve of when Steve and Nancy used to date.
She looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes, and asked him what he’s doing now that he’s graduated while her eyes lingered on his chest hair. Steve gritted his teeth before draping a towel over himself.
Billy Hargrove was an asshole. But Mrs. Wheeler was starting to wig Steve out pretty bad too.
That afternoon, he was still in a sour mood. The stalls at the community pool have these wimpy curtains. They barely gave the illusion of security but King Billy always acted like he couldn't see that this stall was occupied.
“Whoops, sorry, Harrington,” His voice echoed off the tiles and Steve slipped, hand waving out in the middle of nowhere to help him catch his balance.
Billy’s arm shot out and caught him by the elbow
“For fuck’s sake Billy,” Steve’s voice was higher than he wanted, and kind of breathy. Billy was stark naked except for red flip flops. “This is the third time this week.”
“Sorry, compadre, I have a lot on my mind,” Billy nodded and turned, throwing the curtain closed behind him. “Really didn’t mean it.”
“Like what? It better be good, because if my… fucking dick is going to be exposed it better be for a damn good reason,” Steve groused.
“Nothing I didn’t see in school, chill out, baby,” Steve can practically hear that toothy grin.
“What’s on your mind?”
Billy doesn’t answer right away. But the shower next door turns on, and Steve can hear the slap of Billy’s flip flops.
“How do you know if you’re in love, Harrington?”
Steve’s mouth fell open and he got a mouthful of the nasty pipe water.
“What?”He asked.
“Like… I never been in love before,” This was followed by the patter of flip flops. “So I’m trying to get some perspective.”
“I… you think you’re in love?”
“Probably,” Billy doesn’t sound happy about it. Water splashes on the tiles around Steve and he imagines the water splattering across Billy’s chest, heat rising like steam. Slow motion.
“What makes you think so?”
“I’ve been saving money,” Billy said. “I’m very close to getting back to California. I could go. But there’s this person…”
“So… tell her how you feel?” Steve expected that he would be fucking elated to find out that Billy was leaving, but instead it feels kind of empty and blank.
Billy laughed, a short firecracker burst of a sound, hitting the tiles all around Steve like a whip’s crack. It was very different from the way he laughed earlier.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Just trying to figure myself out, you know.”
“When would you leave?”
Billy sighed, “Sooner is better. They’re never gonna feel the same way. I’m kidding myself, you know?”
Steve scrubbed a hand through his hair, waiting too long before responding. “I’m sorry, man.”
“Don’t worry about it,” This laugh sounds more like the Mrs. Wheeler laugh, loud and, Steve’s starting to suspect, fake.
“You could still give it a try,” Steve offered weakly, “You’ve got nothing to lose, right?”
The laugh got louder, “You’re a riot, Harrington. Really, you are.”
Steve drove home with his head weirdly muddled with this news. He should be psyched about Billy's leaving. And if Billy got with his crush, he would have less time to piss Steve off or flirt with everyone in town. It was a win win.
It’s only when Steve was in bed later that night, the smell of chlorine still hanging in his nose slightly, that he wondered. Why Steve said she, but Billy said they. Like it could be anyone.
Like it could be a guy.
He watched the next day, the way Billy hung back from the crowd of girls, always holding himself apart. He slid away from a girl who was practically falling out of her swimsuit, smile frozen on his shiny face. Mrs Wheeler is staring at him, and Steve is uncomfortable to think how he’s not much better.
Come to think of it, he’s never seen Billy really hang around a girl that long. Oh he talks to them, goes on dates. He sleeps with them, or so Steve has heard. He’s never attached to any of them, he never seems to linger around one more than any other. Steve used to be part of SteveAndNancy and SteveAndMichelle and SteveAndChrissy. Billy wasn’t Billy and anybody.
It’s pretty easy to keep an eye on him because the only place Billy seems to linger is around Steve’s stand. He hangs by Chet at the gate sometimes too, giving him sunny smiles that make Steve’s chest hurt. Eddie Munson rolls by sometimes at closing, sitting with Billy in the back of his van.
Steve started to stare so hard he swore he was getting blinded by the glare off of Billy’s necklace, the gleam of his fake smile.
He showered and started to lock up in a fog, when he heard a splash in the water. The pool is closed… Steve’s blood runs cold. He promised himself if he took this job that nothing like what happened to Barb would ever happen again.
He groped under the check-in desk, coming up with the plank that they use to prop open the window when the weather is stifling, and crept out into the pool area.
“Jesus, Harrington,” Billy bobbed in the water, “What the fuck are you doing?”
Steve exhaled a shaky breath, “Fuck, Billy. I thought you were like a wild animal or something.”
“Who says I’m not?”
Steve dropped the plank to his side, “What are you doing out here?”
Billy leaned back in the water, his hair floating out in a dirty blonde halo, “Taking a dip. It was hot as hell today. You wanna come in?”
“I just showered.”
Billy shook his head, “Haven’t seen you in the pool all summer. Can you even swim?”
“How do you think I got the job, asshole?” Steve frowned.
“So prove it, asshole,” Billy grinned.
Steve grumbled, hating Billy for baiting him and hating himself for rising to it.
“There’s that King Steve spirit,” Billy smiled smugly. “Feels good, right?”
Steve floated along, annoyed that it did actually feel good. He tried not to think of the mass of swimming kids he’d seen opening their mouths underwater in the pool all day, and just enjoy.
“Did you talk to your crush?”
“Talk to them every day,” Billy replied with a laugh.
That ruled out Eddie Munson.
Steve frowned, bobbing closer, “You talk to them every day and you don’t know if they like you?”
Billy smiled ruefully, “I know they don’t.”
Steve rolled his head back into the water, “You could tell them. What’s the harm, if you might leave soon? No regrets, right?”
Billy doesn’t respond, but Steve was content enough to wait, his face turned up towards the late afternoon sunset, eyes closed. He hadn’t gotten into a pool for pleasure in so long.
It almost felt like the water lapping up, brushing Steve’s face. A warm press, something soft brushing his lips. If it hadn’t been for the stifled moan, Steve might have thought it was the pool.
He opened his eyes, and Billy was covering his mouth with his hand, swimming backwards. Steve could see his own shock reflected back in Billy’s bare blue eyes.
“Sorry,” Billy said, “Fuck, I’m… I’m sorry.”
Steve blinked at him, his brain still catching on to what happened.
“I’m so-” Billy swam swiftly to the edge of the pool, pulling himself out, shaking his head.
He kissed him. Billy kissed him?
It didn’t make sense. Steve’s game has been shot. He hadn’t gotten a single date this summer, nor a single kiss. He’d been a dick to Billy, snapping at him with the slightest provocation. He wasn’t King Steve anymore and Billy could have anyone he wanted.
He was slammed out of his reverie when the gate slams shut, leaving Steve alone, bobbing like a cork.
Billy didn’t come to work the next day. Or the next. Steve felt like he was going through his days under water, in slow motion.
“He quit,” Heather raised one perfect brow, “Will you mop up in the boys bathroom? Some kid threw up a hot dog.”
Steve didn’t exactly want to clean up hot dog but it wasn’t like there was Billy around to hang out with. Billy to jostle and scowl at, Billy to float on the water with. Billy to kiss…
Later, Billy asked Steve when he realized, when he decided he needed to rush over to Cherry Lane right away and bang on the window until Billy opened up. Billy asked when Steve decided to kiss Billy then and there, in front of God and everybody.
Steve didn’t have the heart to tell him that it was when he was mopping up chunks of hot dog, chlorine clogging his nostrils, nothing to do but think. Billy had said he loved someone. Someone he talked to every day, who didn’t like him much. Someone who could be a boy. Someone like Steve.
“You’re an asshole,” Steve laughed as he flopped through Billy’s window and wrapped his arms around him. Billy didn’t gleam like he did at the pool, all shiny surfaces. But he kissed Steve like he meant it, reflected back all the mixed up feelings swirling in Steve’s chest. All of this and in slow motion too.

jake ‘hangman’ seresin x f!aviator!reader
series summary: “there’s no place like home for the holidays,” is a saying you loathe with a passion.  you didn’t hate the holidays. you just wished you had a place to call home when the winter days are lonely and the nights are long and cold. little did you know that home was a lot closer than you think, and came in the package of a charming green eyed pilot with a surprising amount of love for the holiday season.

“this heart that glows like an ember, longs to be loved just by you…” warm december, julie london
You are not a Scrooge. Not in the slightest. In fact you loved the holidays—being bundled up in the coziest of fleece sweaters, Christmas music, and hot chocolate were amongst your favorite winter activities. However, that’s not to say the holidays were your favorite time of the year.
The air of The Hard Deck warms your cold cheeks as you enter the bar. A content sigh escapes you as you send Penny Benjamin a small grin and a wave. Bouts of familiar laughter steal your attention away to the two pool tables towards the back of the bar, already surrounded by your favorite people.
Fanboy is the one who catches a glimpse of you first as you make your way through the sea of people. He perks up, shoving his pool cue into Bob’s vacant hands.
“It’s about time you showed up, Thumper!” Fanboy chortles, throwing his arm around your shoulders. “We were getting a bit worried that you bailed on us.”
You laugh and give his hand a soft squeeze as the two of you make your way back to the squad. “On Secret Santa day? I could never!” You shake the gift you're holding as emphasis. “Besides, if anyone was going to bail, it’d definitely be Mav.”
Fanboy nods in agreement before pulling you towards the pool tables. A chorus of dramatic ‘hellos’ and cheers erupt from the aviators as you approach. Of course they started causing a scene. It was ever the Dagger way.
On birthdays, anniversaries, hell even for an everyday appearance, it was a squad tradition to make the small things a huge deal.
You will never forget when Rooster got the whole bar to sing Can You Feel The Love Tonight the first time Fanboy drove a girl home.
Despite being regulars, you can’t help the heat that sets your cheeks aflame. Everyone is looking at your rowdy little group and worst of all, you were the center of attention. You hated it and they all knew it.
They chant your callsign and fist pump while you turn your head, and tuck your chin into the crook of your neck in a lousy attempt to hide your embarrassment. The weight on your shoulders releases as Fanboy makes his way back to the group with the same mischievous grin the rest of them have.
You catch Hangman’s eye and he sends you a sly grin that has your heart running a hundred beats a minute in your ribcage. Your friendship with Jake Seresin was one of the few that you held close to your heart. You love each member of the squad equally, however you had to admit the Jake shaped hole in your heart was a tad larger than all the rest. But you wouldn’t tell any of them that. Especially not him.
He reaches you with an outstretched hand. His brows are raised as if to say, “Well?” So you begrudgingly take his hand in yours, knowing he won’t let up until you do.
Jake lifts your intertwined hands and the way he instantly lights up flies right over your head, but doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the aviators.
“There you are, darling. Give us a twirl,” he drawls with a wink.
You let out a sigh of feign annoyance, before doing a small spin. The group lets out a second series of chortles and obnoxious noises. Another round of heat settles on your ears and the apple of your cheeks. Hangman shakes his head with his hand still in yours as he drapes his arm around your shoulder. They finally settle down when you drop your wrapped gift onto the designated wooden table and unravel yourself from Jake’s hold to greet everyone else individually.
The fall of his smile and shoulders catch Coyote’s eye and he gives Jake a subtle pat on the back. “Could you be any more obvious?” Coyote teases his friend.
Jake frowns, crossing his arms over his shoulders and watches as you move in to hug Payback. “Can’t you see I’m trying?” He really was. He didn’t know how much longer he could take the anticipation of being in your presence, of pining for you day after day. You were right at arm's length but so out of reach. He was sure it was going to kill him someday.
Coyote scoffs taking a swig of his drink. “Well try harder because it clearly isn’t working,” he retorts.
He smacks his friend on the arm and with a jerk of his head the two bring themselves back to the festivities.
The next two hours are spent in tipsy splendor. Alcohol is drunk, gifts are exchanged, and jokes are told as the night continues to wind down. Accepting a bottle of water from Jake, you feel yourself sobering up as the normally crowded Hard Deck starts to empty. Penny is generous enough to let you guys stay even after she’s all ready to close up. Partially because Maverick decides to spend the rest of the night cuddled up with her in one of the corner booths, leaving the rest of you to your own devices.
A soft sigh escapes your lips and your eyelids are heavy from the events of the night. You’re engrossed in your own conversation with Coyote as you rest your weight on Hangman’s chest, leaning back on the heels of your feet so your back is against him. There’s a light sheen of sweat on the back of your neck and you're too dazed to be able to tell if it’s from being so close to Jake or the alcohol that’s filtering through your system. One of his hands is respectfully on your hip while the other lays on the counter the two of you are standing beside.
Jake’s chest rumbles against your back as he contributes his own comments to you and Coyote’s ongoing debate on whether or not Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie. He’s oh so warm against you and you have to fight off the urge to drift off right then and there. The name of one of your favorite movies catches your attention and you’re drawn back to the conversation at hand.
“If that makes Die Hard a Christmas movie, then that means Mean Girls is too. And you know it’s not.”
You turn to look up at Jake with an astounded look on your face. “Excuse me, Hangman, Mean Girls is a Christmas movie! And a Halloween one. That’s what makes it so great.”
He looks at you with an arched brow. “So you’re siding with John McClane then?”
You nod, biting your lower lip at your growing grin.
“Unbelievable,” he grumbles, making you fall back into him with a giggle. Jake’s grip tightens at your hip. It sets the skin there on fire despite the fabric that blocks his touch from directly caressing your skin. An eruption of butterflies roam through your stomach. All because of him.
The feeling was all too familiar when it came to the green eyed aviator. He had caught your eye on your first day at Top Gun and hasn’t left your line of sight ever since. After the two of you graduated, you still found yourself thinking of him when you were deployed overseas. It was just your luck that your paths would cross once again, right where everything started. Only this time luck was on your side, and the permanence of the Dagger Squad in Miramar gave you the opportunity to act on the heavy tug in your chest every time he was around.
Prior to engaging in an actual friendship with Seresin, you have heard plenty of stories about the acclaimed pilot who “always left his wingman hanging.” Naturally, earning him his beloved callsign. His arrogance and slightly dickish attitude precedes him, for he acted as such when you first met him in the academy. Yet, you still found yourself drawn to him. To your surprise, he was drawn to you too.
Gone was the boastful Top Gun pilot and in return you got to know him as both Hangman and Jake Seresin. It was a gift not many got to possess. One you wouldn’t dare take for granted. Which is why upon discovering your true feelings towards your friend, you hid it away. Buried it deep into the chambers of your heart. Never wanting it to be uncovered.
You seem to have spent far too long with your head in the clouds because Jake is nudging you gently. Rooster is staring at you with an inquisitive raise of his brow and your palms sweat at the sudden awkwardness of the group’s silence. “Sorry, Roos, what did you say?” It wasn’t uncommon for you to get lost in your head. Your friends are used to it by now. In fact on more occasions than one you found yourself drifting away and surrounded in a sea of your thoughts. When this starts happening, Jake is always the one to reel you back in.
“I asked if you had any plans for the holidays,” he repeated with a nonchalant wave of his hand. Don’t worry about it, his actions said.
Despite knowing he was being sincere, it didn’t change the fact that you still felt guilty about pulling away again. “Nothing special, just hanging around here. I guess.” No plans, as usual, is what you had wanted to say. Your eyes dart to the window, staring at the dimly lit patio and the moon’s reflection on the beach waves.
The tension that falls upon the group is palpable. The once easy going atmosphere dropped onto your shoulders, making you feel heavy inside.
Phoenix sends you a look, one you could only describe as pity. Very few of the squad members knew about the complicated relationship you had with your family. Of them all, just Phoenix and Maverick had a clue to how messy things were. It was the look on Phoenix’s face that stopped you from telling anyone else about your predicament. You hated being on the receiving end of that look. You hated feeling weak.
“You’re not going to go home and visit your family?” There it is. The f-word. Poor, innocent Bob didn’t know any better but to ask.
The scoff that leaves you is harsher than you intended it to be as you step away from Hangman’s gravity. A chill settles over you from the loss of his warmth and you wrap your arms around yourself to shield you from outwardly cringing. “Oh, there’s no one waiting for me back home.” Your shoulders deflate and you keep your gaze towards the window, not wanting to see the same saddened looks on your colleagues faces. The tears that threaten to fall gather in the corner of your eyes and you brush them off with the back of your hand.
Jake’s heart aches at your confession. How could someone as wonderful as you have no one to come home to? Sure, you’ve never talked openly about your family or a possible significant other, but he had just assumed that you had plenty of people back home who cared. He didn’t think you were all alone. A pang of guilt courses through him at the thought of his constant raving about his mother and father. His pride and joy for his hometown community was one he was never ashamed of expressing until now. Had he known it was such a sensitive topic, he would have never talked about it with you to save you from loneliness and heartbreak.
“No one should spend the holidays alone,” Payback frowns.
Fanboy nods in agreement with his front seater. “You really have nowhere to go?”
You shrug. “Really, it’s okay, guys. It’s nothing I’m not used to.”
Those words are like a stab at Jake’s chest. A fleeting thought crosses his mind. It’s irrational and quite selfish but he always seemed to act that way around you. You could come home with me.
He doesn’t even realize the offer had fallen from his lips until you look back at him in shock.
“What?” The word falls breathlessly from your lips.
Jake blinks before meeting Coyote’s amused gaze. He focuses back on you and with much more confidence repeats, “Come home with me.”
_____
How he managed to convince you to come home with him for Christmas, Jake wasn’t sure. It was a miracle that you even said yes in the first place.
“Are you sure this is okay?” You had asked him before boarding.
“Of course, why wouldn’t it be?” He sends you a charming smile.
You look down at your worn out tennis shoes. The conflict stirring within you is evident and Jake wishes he could take it away. He could imagine why you were having second thoughts. You guys were friends but this…this felt a little too intimate for your relationship. If he could even call it that.
“Hey.” He places a hand on your shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “If you’re worried about not being welcome, don’t. My family they’re…”
“A little more than friendly,” Coyote having overheard your conversation butts in. “Trust me. I slept over practically every night in high school and they didn’t even bat an eye. ”
You look at Jake who is already confirming his statement with a soft smile. “Seriously, I wouldn’t have asked you if it wasn’t okay. You trust me, right?”
“Right,” you swallow.
“Then trust me when I say it’s all good.”
He was now sandwiched between you and Coyote on a flight back to their hometown. You were seated at the window and Javy had the aisle.
Jake adjusted the belt across his lap as he patiently waited for the boarding process to be complete. He turned towards his friend and wasn’t surprised to see Coyote already knocked out. He laughs to himself before turning to you.
You’re staring out the window and your leg is bouncing rapidly up and down, emitting soft thumps with each movement.
He places his hand on your knee and you whip your head towards him. He cringes with an apologetic look.
Once it settles in that the person who touched you was just Jake, the tightness in your muscles dissipates.
“You’re doing it again,” he tells you gently. “Everything okay?”
You sigh. “No. I mean, yeah. Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just…” You shake your head. “Never mind. You’ll think it’s stupid.”
Jake shakes his head and a frown tugs at his lips. “I won’t think it’s stupid, Thumps. Promise.” He holds his free hand up as if he were taking an oath.
“I’m nervous,” you breathe. “I don’t know what it is, but being a passenger and not having control of the plane, it scares me. And I hate it because I’m a pilot, you know? I shouldn’t be afraid of flying. Like I said. Stupid.”
“Thumper.”
You avoid his gaze.
“Y/N,” he tries again. This time, the use of your real name gets you to look at him. “It’s not stupid. In this environment, you’re used to being in control. So used to it that your brain goes into overdrive when you’re not and that’s okay. Besides, flying commercial doesn’t really fulfill our need for speed, does it?”
That pulls a dry laugh from your lips. “No, it doesn’t.” A soft chime over the intercom sends your heart racing again and you shut your eyes as the plane starts to move. The light pressure on your knee from Jake’s hand has you releasing a shaky breath.
“It’ll be okay. Try and sleep, Thumper,” he tells you softly. “I’m here, just sleep.”
“Lieutenant Jake Seresin.” His eyes are bright as they settle on you. He knew you knew his name. He definitely knew yours. The two of you graduated from the same Top Gun class. He remembers how impressed he was that you graduated third right behind him and Coyote. He didn’t have the guts to speak to you then. Jake didn’t have the bravado he has now. “Hangman.”
“I know.” You hold your hand out to him. “Lieutenant-”
“I know who you are, Thumper.” He winks, clasping his hand in yours.
You eyed him suspiciously, still wary of why he decided to approach you and Phoenix as if he was unaware of the obvious tension amongst the group.
“Hey Coyote,” Phoenix nods to the man beside Jake.
Coyote nods back. “Hey.”
You’re aware of the conversation carrying on around you but you are too taken by the blond haired pilot whose stare hasn’t left yours since you walked in. He was trouble. You didn’t need to hear any more stories about him to know that. But even as the alarm bells went off in your head, screaming at you to keep your distance and stay away, you couldn’t. He continued to capture your attention and eventually got a hold of your heart, body, and soul.
You wake with a tap to your shoulder. Your gaze meets his and he’s looking down at you with an apologetic smile.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you there. I just wanted to let you know that we’re here.”
Your brows furrow, only to realize that you had somehow slept the entire three hour flight from California to Texas. You’ve never been able to sleep that straight, let alone sleep straight on a plane. Though you wouldn’t deny that it felt good. That you felt good.
Ever the gentleman, Jake takes your carry on bag from the overhead bin. You feel your muscles stretch and your joints crack with every step you take until you’re off the plane and breathing the stuffy air of the Dallas Airport.
“Ah, home sweet home,” Coyote over dramatically exclaims, stretching his back with his hands on his hips.
You giggle and Jake sends you a wink.
“Home sweet home, it is, Javy.” He takes a deep breath and despite being inside, Jake feels deep in his bones the familiarity of his home.
Jake grabs your hand and Javy hooks his arm with yours so you don’t lose each other in the holiday crowd. Jake tucks your joined hands into the pocket of his coat making a small smile cross your face. You follow the two men with an amused grin. The two babble like school children, naming off all the places and things you just have to see. You have never seen the two of them this enthusiastic about something that wasn’t flying or football. A warmth spreads through you at the sight of them so at ease, so at home. For a moment, you find yourself wishing you had a place this familiar. To feel this peaceful in your own hometown. However, it’s a fleeting thought. Just as quickly as it came, it vanishes as soon as you step out of the airport into the dry Texas air.
“You call him?” Coyote asks from your left.
Jake only grumbles a response, clearly not too fond of this “him” Coyote has brought up.
You stare at Jake for clarification to which he sighs out, “He’s talking about my brother, Luke. He’s going to pick us up and take us home.”
“Oh,” is all you say. Take us home. Us. The thought has your stomach doing backflips as you wait out in the cold. You are chastising yourself immediately. Jake meant “us” as in him and Javy. Not “us” as in you and him. The two of you are friends. There is no us. It was foolish of you to entertain the thought for even a moment more.
Javy releases your arm as a black SUV pulls up to the white curb. You feel Jake tense and see his jaw clench as the car comes to a stop.
A man in jeans, boots, and a brown flannel top steps out of the SUV with a megawatt grin. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t find him attractive but as you observed him closer, you understood why. He resembled the man beside you quite a bit. The dimple on his left cheek as he grinned and his dirt blond head of hair was an exact replica of Jake’s. The one thing that set them apart were their eyes. His were a dark shade of brown that rivaled those of his brother’s. Luke Seresin was broad and burly while his brother was muscular and lean. He had a couple more inches to him compared to Jake. He puffed his chest out a bit more as Luke approached him.
“Well, if it isn’t my little brother.” His voice, you note, is different too. Slightly deeper and not as kind. The exchange feels rehearsed and unnatural. From the way he grabs his brother in his arms and pats his back in a way that looks a little too rough to be playful.
Jake doesn’t say a word and just grunts as he’s pulled into his brother. One arm wraps around Luke’s shoulders while the other stays at his side with his hand still in yours. He rolls his lips inwards and nods in greeting. Jake turns to you with a softer look in his eyes. “Stay here. I’m going to go help Javy with the bags.” He reluctantly unravels his hand from your hold before glaring at his brother once more.
You watch him head to the trunk and shove your hands into your own pockets. You rock back and forth on the balls of your feet, feeling awkward in his brother’s intense stare.
“You must be the infamous Thumper.” Luke remarked.
“Yeah, I guess I am,” you swallow, slightly confused by his comment. You didn’t like how he made you feel. He didn’t provide you the same comfort that Jake did. You really need to stop comparing the two, you remind yourself. “You must be Luke.”
“Yeah, I guess I am,” he echoes.
“Hey, Luke, you mind helping us out back here?” Jake shouts from the back of the car.
Luke gives you one last look over before responding. “Yeah, I’m coming.”
The wink he sends you shoots a chill down your spine and you find yourself tapping your foot and wrapping your arms around yourself for security. The feeling finally dissipates when Jake’s familiar scent of his laundry detergent and the cheap cologne he buys from Target floods your senses.
He nudges his shoulder with yours. “You ready?” Jake opens the car door.
You shake yourself from your stupor and feel yourself relax with Jake’s presence. “Ready as I can be,” you reply absently.
He helps you into the back and Coyote sends you a comforting smile as you buckle your seatbelt. Jake climbs into the front seat with his brother and he takes off the second Jake’s door is closed.
You catch Jake’s eye in the side view mirror as you cruise down the highway. His lips tug upward and you reciprocate before staring out at the scenery once more.
Safe. The word passes through you, surrounding you in a bubble of warmth. The nerves you were previously feeling towards the whole affair faded away, even if only for a moment. This entire time you wondered why you said yes to Jake’s proposal for coming home with him for the holidays. You grappled with the anxiety that didn’t seem to leave you despite Jake’s constant reassurance. Your worry thoughts tend to dwell on all the reasons that would make his family possibly hate you. Yet somehow, all it took was this moment to have all those thoughts seemingly disappear. This moment that made you understand everything. Jake Seresin made you feel safe. Jake Seresin felt like home.

The summer sun was beating down right through the open top of your Jeep as you drove to the Hard Deck. It was a hot day in San Diego, so what better way to spend it other than playing dogfight football with the Dagger Squad? You had woken up to a text from Rooster saying that since it was so nice out, he had requested a “team-building” day and Mav had approved. Even though you weren’t a Navy Aviator, you were always invited.
The Dagger Squad had taken you in as one of their own after Rooster had accidentally spilled his beer all over you one night at the Hard Deck. He felt so bad, in his drunken stupor, that he insisted that you come back to his group of friends with him, literally not taking no for an answer.
Ever since then, you have become one of them. You were included in the squad group chats, invited on outings and general hangouts, and they even gave you a callsign: Duck. Fanboy was actually the one to coin you your callsign, solely on the fact that you and Rooster had become really close friends and he thought it was hilarious; Rooster and Duck.
Pulling into the parking lot of the Hard Deck, you saw that you were one of the last ones to arrive. You pulled into a spot that was between Rooster’s Bronco and Hangman’s F-150. After putting the Jeep in park, you pulled out your phone to see where everyone was meeting. Phoenix had texted the group chat 5 minutes ago, saying to meet on the back patio of the Hard Deck to figure out teams. After grabbing your beach bag and water bottle, locking the Jeep, you started towards the back deck.
Walking around the side of the Hard Deck, you were met with a chorus of laughter and basic conversation. Making your way up onto the deck, Rooster was the first to notice you, walking over to greet you with a hug. “There she is! Glad you could make it, Quacks.” For some reason, he preferred to call you “Quacks” versus “Duck,” which you didn’t mind.
-
After hanging out and talking for a bit, the teams were picked and everyone made their way down to the beach. The teams consisted of Rooster, you, Coyote, Bob, Harvard, Fritz, and Payback versus Mav, Hangman, Phoenix, Fanboy, Omaha, Halo, and Yale. Mav and you had an unspoken rule that with one look, you’d both retire out of the game for two reasons: you weren’t in as good of shape as everyone else and as Mav put it, he’s “old.”
With everyone lining up against their designated person, you saw that you were lined up with Hangman. He looked across to you and gave you a megawatt smile that stirred your stomach up. With a blush that seemed to come out of nowhere creeping up your neck, you gave him a small smile back. He seemed to notice your body’s response to his smile and lightly chuckled.
Apart from what everyone else said about Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, you and him got along really well. He was always kind and nice towards you, never sending unwanted and unwarranted banter your way. On nights where you’d hang out with the squad at the Hard Deck after a busy day, he always made a point to ask about your day. He would check in on you to make sure you were doing okay, seeing if you needed another drink or some company. It was the same way on other gatherings between the squad. He always seemed to be in your corner.
The group didn’t know what to think of his mannerisms when you were around. He was sweet with you but to others, he was his normal self. You really didn’t know what to think of it either. On one hand, him being sweet had your heart thumping and your head spinning. On the other hand, you didn’t think he thought of you any more than just a friend.
The sound of a whistle brought you back to reality. The footballs were snapped back and everyone was scrambling to get open and also block their person at the same time. Hangman was on you in a second, blocking your line of sight to Rooster. He, however, had a perfect line of sight to Mav, and being that he towered over you, he was able to catch the football with no problem. He took off towards his end zone with you trailing behind. Being that he was taller, he had longer legs so he made the touchdown in no time.
After Hangman had scored three more touchdowns, Harvard and you switched so you were now guarding Halo. Hangman had a small frown on his face as you switched places with Harvard but quickly shook it off. With another snap of the ball, everyone was in motion. Halo and you were on the far side by the water, taking your time moving around each other. What neither one of you failed to notice was Coyote and Omaha barreling your way, trying to catch an in-air ball. They hadn’t noticed you either.
What happened next, happened in slow motion. Omaha plowed into you and Coyote plowed into Halo. Being that both you and Halo were on the smaller side, the impact sent you both straight into the shallow water, soaking both of you. You felt a sharp pain shoot up your leg from your ankle.
Another whistle blow and you’re being pulled from the water. Coughing up the water that you had inhaled, you look up to see Hangman holding you, bridal style and carrying you to the set of towels on the beach. “Are you okay?” Concern was laced in his tone as he set you down on the towel.
“Yeah, I think so. I felt a sharp pain shoot through my ankle, though.”
“Let me take a look. Which ankle, darlin’?” The nickname sent your heart racing.
“Uhm, the right one.” You choke out with a stutter. He doesn’t seem to notice though as he looks down at your ankle.
“Well, it’s not broken. But there’s some serious swelling and bruising that’s starting. I’m going to run up and see if I can snag some ice from Penny. I’ll be right back, okay?” He looks back up to your face, studying your expression.
“Okay. Thanks, Jake.” You say with a small smile.
While he ran up to the Hard Deck, Rooster came over to check on you. “Hey Quacks, you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m okay. How’s Halo?”
“She’s fine. Just wet and annoyed.” He responded with a laugh. With that, Jake came jogging back with a bag of ice in his hands.
“Hey, I got some ice for your ankle.” He sat down by your feet and put the ice gently on your ankle.
“Thanks, Jake. I really appreciate it.”
“It’s not a problem, darlin’.” He sent you that megawatt smile again, still holding the bag of ice on your ankle.
The others decided to call it after Halo and you had taken a plunge. Rooster had the idea to start a little bonfire in one of the nearby pits. Everyone agreed, not wanting to leave yet.
The sun was starting to set and so the San Diego heat was starting to fade away. The fact that you had gotten slammed into the cold Pacific Ocean and now, had a bag of ice on your ankle, sent shivers through your body. Jake noticed your body trembling and looked up at you. “Do you have a sweatshirt with you?”
“No, I didn’t pack one with me. I wasn’t planning on getting soaked.” You say, laughing.
“I guess that’s fair,” Jake responded with a smile. “Tell you what, we’ll head over to the fire that Rooster’s got going and I’ll run back to my truck and grab one for you.”
“Jake, I don’t want to take your sweatshirt from you-” He stopped you by holding up his hand. “I have a couple in my truck. It’s okay, really. Now, let’s get you up.” With that he stood up, extending his hands out to you. You grabbed onto his hands and he pulled you up. Being that one ankle was out of commission, you stumbled forward into Jake’s chest.
“Woah, I gotcha.”
Sheepishly, you looked up at Jake and smiled. “Thanks, Jake.”
“Not a problem, darlin’.” Once Jake made sure you were steady, he turned around and crouched in front of you. You gave him a questioning look before he told you to hop onto his back. With a giggle that developed into full on laughter, you found yourself hugging Jake’s neck and breathing in his scent. He was careful as he walked over to the fire, finding an Adirondack chair to place you in. He gently set you down, working to prop your foot up so it wouldn’t swell any more.
The rest of the squad watched all of this unfold while standing around the fire. They all shared knowing smiles and went on to different conversations once Jake pulled away from you.
“There we go. Are you comfortable?”
“Yeah, I’m okay.” You respond meeting his eyes and smiling.
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” And with that, he made his way back to his truck. You watched him walk away as you became deep in thought. Rooster sauntered over to you and sat down in the Adirondack chair that was next to yours. “What’s going through that head of yours?”
“I don’t know what to make of Jake, Roos. I can’t tell if his affection is stemming from friendship or something more and it’s driving me crazy. I really like him, and my feelings for him just keep growing. I don’t want to lose him as a friend by saying something. What do I do?” You look at Rooster with pleading eyes.
His gaze softens as he grasps your hand in his. “Quacks, I can say for certain that you wouldn’t ruin your friendship with him. Just talk to him and be honest about how you feel.”
“Thanks, Roos. What would I do without you to keep my head level?”
Laughing, he responds back saying “your head would probably explode, if I’m being honest.”

While Jake walked back to his truck, he couldn’t stop thinking about you and your cute little smile. He had taken a liking to you soon after the squad had adopted you in. You were always welcoming and sweet to him, which was something that he wasn’t used to. Other women would throw themselves at him, but all they were were uniformed chasers. They wanted the bragging rights that went along with sleeping with a Navy Officer, nothing more. Yeah, Jake gave in to a lot of them, but they meant nothing. He always dreaded the next morning, and the conversations that would follow. They only wanted him for his rank, they never wanted the real ‘Jake.’
You had been the only person, outside of the squad, that actually wanted to sit down and get to know him and who he was outside of the Navy. It made his smile thinking about the night that you both had played drunken 20 questions at Phoenix’s apartment. The giggles that erupted from your mouth had him smitten.
When he made it to his truck, he found a beach blanket and his Navy Academy sweatshirt. He wore that sweatshirt more than he cared to admit, but it was extremely comfortable. He did a smell check on the sweatshirt, and when he decided that it smelled fine, he made his way back to you.
When he arrived back at the beach, he could hear your beautiful laughter, mixed in with laughter and commotion from the others. From a distance, Jake could make out your beautiful smile and he felt his chest flutter. God, he was so far gone.
-
Rooster had just finished telling a story about how Fanboy would sing show tunes throughout their last deployment and how Phoenix threatened to throw him overboard if he didn’t stop singing “Let It Go” from Frozen. Your sides had started to hurt from all the laughing, which you’d think you’d be accustomed to by now.
Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Jake make his way back to the bonfire. You met his gaze when he got close to you and gave him a small smile.
“Here ya go, darlin.” He held out a sweatshirt for you, which you happily accepted. After slipping it over your head, you were overwhelmed with the smell that was Jake. His body wash and his cologne were prevalent smells. It took everything in you to not pull it up to your nose and inhale it all. He wrapped the blanket over your lap, being careful not to bump your ankle.
“Thank you, Jake. I really appreciate it.” You say with a smile, meeting his gaze again.
“It’s not a problem, darlin’. Honest.” He responded with a smile that reached his eyes.
With that, you both joined back into the conversations that were going on around you. Jake stayed close to your side throughout the rest of the night, checking on you to make sure you were okay.
-
A yawn had pulled Jake from his current conversation with Coyote. He looked over to see that your eyes had started to droop a little and you were curled up, as best as you could, in the beach blanket.
“Are you tired darlin’?”
“I’m getting there, yeah,” you responded lazily.
“Do you want me to take you home?” He asked.
“Honestly, that would be great. It’s been a busy day,” you say with a little laugh.
Jake stood up and helped you up, his weight supporting yours. Once you were good to stand on your own, Jake crouched in front of you again. With the blanket in your hand, you slowly crawled onto his back. Once you were situated, you both said your goodbyes and headed for Jake’s truck.
Sleep seemed to consume you for the little journey back to Jake’s truck because the next thing you knew, Jake was buckling you in and placing the blanket back over your lap. He looked up to you and gave you a heartwarming smile before closing the door and jogging over to his side of the truck. You rested your arm on the center counsel, supporting your head while he pulled out of the parking lot.
The radio was playing a 90s country music station at a low volume while Jake drove. Sleep must’ve pulled you under again because the next thing you knew, Jake was waking you up.
“Hey sleeping beauty, we’re at your apartment. Do you want some help getting upstairs?” You responded with a mumbled “mmhmm.” With that, Jake jumped out of the truck and helped you down from his passenger seat. He gave you another piggy back ride up to your door. He smiled when he felt you snuggle into his back and give a content sigh. When he arrived to your door, he asked for your keys.
Once you were both inside your apartment, he easily found your bedroom. He had been to your apartment a few different times for dinner or movie nights with the squad so he knew his way around. He loved how your apartment was decorated exactly to match with your personality, and how it smelled exactly like you.
He slowly sat down on your bed, moving your hands from around his neck and laying you back on your pillows. He smiled to himself when you let out a discomforted grunt and scrunched up your face. With the loss of contact, you slowly opened your eyes, looking up at him. Jake moved to prop up your foot with an unused pillow, then he came and sat back down by you. He brushed some of your hair out of your face, studying it as he moved the strands. Your voice brought his out of his thoughts.
“Jake?”
“Yes darlin’?”
“Thank you for taking care of me today. And helping me get home. I really appreciate it, and you.” Jake didn’t know how to respond so he leaned forward and pressed a sweet kiss to your forehead. Your eyes fluttered closed and sleep threatens to take over again.
“Sleep beautiful. I’ll text you in the morning to see how you’re doing.”
That was the last thing you heard before you let sleep engulf your mind and body. Jake quietly got up and made his way out of your apartment, making sure to lock the door behind him.
