The language part (ie the Main Actual Game) of Chants of Sennaar is very fun don't get me wrong - figuring out when a radical means person, or signifies a verb, etc etc - but the number system is absolutely fascinating

#like it's base 10; this is a language game not a maths one #but the way the numbers are written is like. this would make more sense with images but I'm in the tags now #take the number 1342. that's 1x1000 3x100 4x10 2x1 that's how we write it #instead of place columns this system uses quadrants #there is a central thick line. bottom right is units; bottom left tens; top right 100s; top left 1000s #this is a fun and compact way to write a four digit number! #but what about a 5 digit one? 6? bigger? #I don't think the game needs numbers that big but I'm going to follow this train of thought to a conclusion - just use another line+quadran #fairly normal idea- run out of space on your first one? add a second! #but where it gets fun is that means; putting it back into base 10 numerals and keeping the digit separation the same; a long number might b #grouped like: 1 4637 3427 #and if you are used to the western way of grouping digits that looks weird! (we do 3 234 638) #they work in myriads! isn't that neat! #chants of sennaar

it's deep. soo deep. that burning, twisting feeling in your core.

from the moment you first saw his face you haven't been able to forget, it's imprinted on your mind like a memory.

his face is so memorable. those lips and eyes. and god that smile that could make you do anything. and don't even get me started on that voice. deep and calming like the ocean. aggressive when the time calls for it.

he's got you wrapped around his finger... fingers really.

the sound of trickling rain and cars passing you on the street.

the cross walk being crowded with vehicle traffic slowly starts to clear up as soon as the light turns yellow.

the smell of pavement and rain slowly mixing together in a nostalgic aroma. the dark night sky lit up by billboards and street lights.

pedestrians getting ready to cross but not you. your legs are stuck in the same spot they have been since you've seen him walking towards you.

eyes half lidded, lips slightly parted as he blows out smoke from his cigarette. hair messy from running his hands through it too often.

he's under stress.

but just like that, he walks past you without a single acknowledgement. not even a wink or a tap of a shoulder.

it's not until you snap back into reality when you feel someone bump into the fact of you.

"fuck this." whispering under your breath out of annoyance.

it's not like you loved him anyways, yeah you were addicted and he was too. but that's not love, right?

it's not until your phone lights up a couple of blocks down.

'you know your mine.'

'7 at my place. see you later.'

i was just thinking earlier about how, even though this might just betray me as being too romance-fixated (and i am! i really am! i know this about myself), shows really get soured for me when they seem to promise a 'this is the steady relationship of this show' kind of pairing and then they yank it away from you in the name of realism or whatever. roy/keeley from ted lasso and darryl/white josh from crazy ex-girlfriend are the two examples of this that really hurt for me. like, i get that maybe i'm just being petty and i should try to appreciate these stories about how love doesn't work out sometimes, but nope, sorry. i wanted them to be the supporting couple that made it throughout the series and i didn't get it and now i'm always gonna feel a bit less loving toward a show i once loved with all my heart! because ouch!

Edit/note: Personally i think this is less Bruce saying "ACAB" (Batman still very much works with the GCPD and is besties with the commissioner in the vast majority of his comics, thank you very much) and more him disapproving of Dick joining Blüdhaven's PD. Both because he specifically says "this department" and because the author who wrote The Target also wrote in Nightwing (1996) about how Blüdhaven is abnormally corrupt and even worse than Gotham. Sorry for the long note, just my pet peeve-iness acting up.
