“spell components are stupid,” i say into the mic.
the crowd boos. i begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
“she’s right,” it says. i look for the owner of the voice. there in the second row stands: anthony burch.

every day i'm like yeah wow the critical role cast is so good at character-building i can't learn anything else about them that will make me even more impressed than i already am, and then i watch a marisha ray talks episode and she's like "i think the world throws things at you and changes you whether you like it or not and some people like caleb are more resistant to that but i think beau is pretty vulnerable to that type of change right now" and i'm like what the fuck. you are thinking about THAT TOO??

the spells in bg3 are kind of ... shouty ? i refuse to believe that all spells are invoked that way. this is my way of saying that a competent illusion wizard would never want someone to clock that he's casting an illusion spell. they're supposed to be verbalized and somaticized as deceptively and quietly as possible, even though there's still a possibility of someone noticing. the better the mage in general, though, the better chance they have of not being noticed.

honestly I think my main litmus for “is the magic system good” is “are there situations where you simply cannot use your magic” where it’s reliant on the magic itself and not, say, magic being outlawed so you can’t practice in public.
like, the most basic application of this is the idea of mana/spell slots or whatever. if you use too much magic you simply can’t anymore. it’s a finite resource that has to be regularly replenished. so you can run out, you can find yourself in dire straights at the end of the day completely unable to cast anything
or like when it’s based on physical objects. material components, potions, heck even the magic wand thing, where if you don’t have what you need in hand you can’t cast
or limitations to what magic can actually do. my favorite application of this is avatar, where like. okay you’re a waterbender! great! that’s not gonna do much in a situation where you’re not like at the ocean or a river or something. even if you do have water on hand, there’s no guarantee that that’ll be useful or applicable in this circumstance
it can even be as basic as like needing hand movements. somatic components in dnd. whatcha gonna do if someone binds your hands, eh? try tracing a glyph with this. again going back to avatar, restraining people is very effective against benders (which is why they were able to show that bumi was incredibly powerful when he could still bend whilst completely restrained)
fullmetal alchemist does it really well where like. okay you need a transmutation circle in order to transmute. for most people this means sitting down for a few minutes scrawling intricate symbols in the dirt. if you’re clever, you have a circle inscribed on your person somewhere — but this is only one kind of circle, and you can only do one thing with it. if you lose it, you’re done. (and if you’re mustang, you can’t even use it if you get wet) you can forego using a transmutation circle only if you’ve committed the Ultimate Taboo and paid a terrible price for it
I really like the Stormlight Archive system which is kinda a combination of all of the above points (and no wonder when it’s Brandon Sanderson, Thee Authority on magic systems). you need Spheres to power your magic, and Spheres need to be charged by Stormlight, which only happens during those absolute killer storms that destroy fucking everything in their path. IF you can use Stormlight, you can only do one or two highly specialized things, and you absolutely can and will run out when you need it the most. (this is a very simplified telling of it but you get the gist)
and then you have. fucking. Merlin. all he has to do is say an incantation and presto, it happens! there’s a couple times where it’s like “ohhh this spell is too powerful for youuu~” and then all he has to do is like. repeat it ten times, being sure to absolutely shout it the last time, and it works! and it’s literally just that, just saying the words. there’s no like, work shown. no dedication to the craft. no limitations. we haven’t encountered a problem yet that Merlin can’t “dor graenis helshio” his way out of. it’s boring as hell!
just. if magic can do everything, what’s the point of having a plot? where’s the struggle? at least try to make it compelling

season five isn't going to be the byler show because we all have brains and recognize this is an ensemble sci fi show obviously, but it is kinda funny to hear people argue that because the duffers specifically point out in their pitch that will is gay and gets kidnapped soon after realizing it, then in season one have everyone who isn't "in the know" assume that this occurred because he's gay, thus really linking this realization with his disappearance both supernaturally and also to those outside of the main cast. this means that you can't separate the two. there's more to it of course, but will being gay and the consequences he faces for that is intertwined.
not only that, but they then reveal his kidnapper to be will's perfect character foil--love vs hate, light vs dark, hope vs despair, optimism vs cynicism, freedom vs subjugation, light wizard vs dark wizard, etc.
vecna spends all of season four preying on those who are traumatized and "other". he enshrouds them in their darkness until they succumb to it and believe it to be true, and gains strength from their despair.
what does will spend all of season four doing?
he stays by mike's side and banishes his deepest, darkest insecurities by basking him in his light. he listens to mike's worries and his secrets and tells him no, you're wrong, you're absolutely wrong and here's why. this is who you really are: someone worthy, capable, and strong. don't listen to that voice in your head; it's lying to you, mike. he gives mike hope and a way out of his darkness. he frees him from the grips of self-hate out of the goodness of his heart, not because he stands to gain anything from it.
vecna uses people's darkest and scariest memories to trap them and will uses one of mike's happy and safe memories to help him.
vecna gains strength from pain and rage and will gains strength from love and acceptance; acceptance that he felt from mike all his life and then acceptance that he specifically received from jonathan in the back kitchen.
time and time again, season four made sure to show us that they are two sides of the same coin and will's story cannot be extricated from mike and his romantic love for him, so like... season five is not going to be the byler show, but it also ... kind of is going to be the byler show lmao.
if season five is going to feature will then automatically it will feature mike and if it features them then it will pick up on their unfinished plot from season four and if love and acceptance are vecna's weaknesses and love and acceptance are what byler feel and receive from each other then... how is it not the byler show?
obviously other stuff is going to happen because they're not the only two characters in a romance show, but like ... to act like season four [for them] wasn't all about their relationship, the unsaid things that sit between them, and how will's love for mike is not only what made him able to finally say i love you to eleven for the first time but also precisely the love that he was trying to get from her, and that somehow that isn't going to bleed into season five and be resolved and be the exact kind of love and acceptance that will defeat vecna because will's otherness is rooted in his queerness and season five is literally his coming of age and also he's the focus and we'll be exploring his relation to everything because he is In Fact Actually connected to Everything and always has been is just .... weird. and nonsensical.
#mine#like. it isn't but it literally is the byler show idk wht to tell u man. every ending has a beginning and will is that beginning.#his disappearance is tied to him being gay. his otherness is BECAUSE he's gay. his first trauma was homophobia.#milkvan is bones bc mike said ily due to will's confession but will's confession does not apply to eleven. she doesn't feel that way.#she TOLD us and mike she doesn't feel that way and they showed that with how they ended the season. when mike realizes what he's been#searching for has been right beside him all along paired with will being in the most danger he's ever been in.. do you really think it#won't lead to some realizations? when their season four plot was literally their relationship being built up? when s4 showed u how#every problem that mike has with eleven is nonexistent with will? when they told us that the one person mike can't lose is will? will's#weakness is the trauma tht stems from his otherness and once he receives that love and acceptance vecna won't have anything#to draw strength from in him. and since this is stranger things we KNOW that love will defeat evil bc it always does. like. what's#not clicking. not every single second of every single episode is going to be byler falling in love being boyfriends and no one is saying#that lol but to act like will's gayness is not inherently tied to the plot and his coming of age and like will being a focus doesn't#automatically make mike a focus too especially since he's 'figured some stuff out' but still has more stuff to realize it's like. i just#don't understand tht sentiment. they cast will knowing he was going to be a big component of st. the show started with him and it ends#with him. and they said in s4 that mike is the leader guiding everyone. n tht without heart [aka mike] will would fall apart.#literally what is not clicking someone explain it to me bc i don't understand. 🤨📝🧐

Fluffcember Day 18, Sight:
Warning for temporary magically induced blindness (status effect)
G'raha stood very cautiously still, staff held protectively at his chest. There was a rush of air against his neck from someone darting past close behind him and he hoped fervently that it'd been S'ria and not something else. The sound of metal against flesh and an unholy screech suggested that it had been S'ria, intervening on his behalf. It was suddenly much quieter. All G'raha could hear then was a faint sound of footsteps on leaves, the sound of knives being sheathed, and slightly exerted breathing.
“Ria, I – how long is this supposed to last?”
“A quarter bell at most.” S'ria's voice was sympathetic and much closer than G'raha had been expecting. “I'm going to touch you, is that alright?”
G'raha nodded frantically. “Please do, this is… unsettling having no sense of orientation.”
S'ria's hands on his arm immediately became an anchor in the unnatural darkness. G'raha sighed in relief even as embarrassment snuck up on him.
“Pray forgive me, I was taken off guard – and now I cannot see anything nor can I cast to fix it.”
S'ria pressed closer against his side. “It happens to the best of us. I've been in fights where if I had gotten poisoned and needed healing one more time, I think Y'shtola would've just killed me herself.” He chuckled fondly and G'raha appreciated that somehow things like that were good memories. “It won't last long. We should go somewhere a touch better than the middle of a clearing, though.”
G'raha tightly gripped S'ria's arm, following his careful guidance to avoid stumbling over rocks. It was odd but not entirely unpleasant how not being able to focus on sight made him pay attention to other things more. The feel of the fabric under his hands, the soft sound of S'ria breathing, the lingering scent of some herbal soap – he'd have to remind himself to notice the little things more often, even once his vision cleared.
(And it did, soon. He blinked and S'ria came back into focus and there was the tingle of magic at his fingertips once again. He immediately healed S'ria's scrapes from the last battle and received a relieved smile in response, though S'ria made no move to urge G'raha to let go of him despite it no longer being necessary.)

The piccrew foundations are ALL DONEEE
And in the process of compressing files, and cutting down things, I have..
Tumblr media
All of my categories done, with the base items within them, anddd.
Tumblr media
376 item slots left to fill! My route of customization here has been to limit colours, while maximising variants - there's a decent chunk of accent pieces with specific caste colours, but largely most things are falling into black/white/rust/yellow/green/blue/purple that's cut in the middle between the two neighboring castes.
The plan is to specifically note in the README that people can and should customize the results with their characters specific bloodcolour, which is partially the point of having the white option: it'll make it fairly easy for people to either flood-fill the right colour on Overlay or Multiply, even if they're very new to photo editing.
Not entirely sure what to do with the insane amount of slots that have been freed up from this method, though. I might end up tossing an early preview up on here to get opinions on anything i've blatantly missed?
God-tier/SBurb stuff seems obvious to add. And I will be dicing up the canon outfits, but surprisingly less variation in those than I thought there would be? Before I do the public opinion thing, I'll probs go peering through people's selects and seeing what the fuck fashion trends are the most common with characters now, haha.
(Or, for followers, feel free to drop an ask if there's any specific fashion trends or accessories you think are an absolute must-have for the piccrew! The goal for this is to try and make it as useful as possible for a variety of people who also may want to skip the process of drawing out endless npcs, lol.)
