The Sing-Off, s.4 ep.1 — Contestants' Choice
Two years after its previous run, The Sing-Off came roaring back for a fourth season in December 2013, with a new judge on the panel and a new bit of drama in their decision-making process. The diverse roster of competitors ranged from high schoolers to retirees.
.
Group opener
youtube
The brash, passionate music of Fun. was a fantastic choice for the first opening number of the season. With all ten groups creating a chorus 85 voices strong and overflowing into the side boxes, it's no surprise that the judges gave them a standing ovation.
Details:
title: Fun. medley
original songs: "Some Nights"; [1:05] "We Are Young", featuring Janelle Monae; [1:46] "Carry On"
written by: all songs by Fun. & producer Jeff Bhasker
arranged by: The Sing-Off arrangers
choreographed by: Rosero McCoy
air date: 9 December 2013
My favorite bits:
Eli's bright purple pants & Honey's red hair and yellow shirt make them really easy to spot.
(That said, playing "find the VP members" in the crowd is also enjoyable. I see you and your swoopy hair in the back, Layne.)
our gang being front and center early on, and mostly staying near the front, which hints that the producers really wanted them featured
Pyrotechnics are inherently cool. 🎆
Tony getting to show off a bit of his dance training
At the end, when most of the singers are just taking large steps for the do-si-do maneuver, Eli's basically doing little jetés. He's so bouncy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
Vocal Rush had videographer with them, and he recorded some footage of rehearsals in which you can catch glimpses of the VoicePlay gang. (Earl is the easiest to pick out in his bright orange shirt, but they're all there if you look carefully.)
A revised arrangement of this medley was also the opening number for the 2014 Sing-Off tour.
.
Order of performances
Vocal Rush — "Bottom of the River" by Delta Rae
Home Free — "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line
Princeton Footnotes — "I Knew You Were Trouble" by Taylor Swift
Calle Sol — "Pon de Replay" by Rihanna
Street Corner Renaissance — "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction
judges' choice for the first half
Ten — "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus and Chaka Khan
Element — "Burn" by Ellie Goulding
VoicePlay — "Feel This Moment" by Pitbull, feat. Christina Aguilera
The Filharmonic — "Treasure" by Bruno Mars
AcoUstiKats — "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, feat. Pharrell Williams
judges' choice for the second half
.
VoicePlay performance
youtube
[Here is another version with the intro package and judges comments.]
The brief for both the audition process and the first episode was to perform something that represents the group's strengths. Since it was good enough to get them on the show, VoicePlay made a few tweaks to the arrangement of their submission piece, and worked with the choreographers to add dynamic staging that played more effectively to the studio audience and multiple cameras.
Details:
title: Feel This Moment
original song / performers: "Feel This Moment" by Pitbull, featuring Christina Aguilera
written by: Armando "Pitbull" Pérez, Christina Aguilera, Chantal Kreviazuk, Nasri Atweh, Adam Messinger, "Sir Nolan" Lambroza, & Urales "DJ Buddha" Vargas
arranged by: Layne Stein & Hannah Juliano
air date: 9 December 2013
My favorite bits:
the slow build from simple a cappella harmonies to a full-on jam, all while transforming a rap song into several different musical genres
Earl and Honey's incredible high harmonizing on ☞ ☜ ♫ "Baby we can PAR-TAY!" ♫
breaking off into three conspiratorial pairs that then reconfigure into trios before rejoining for the big dramatic ♫ "mooo-oOo-OOO-meeent" ♫
Eli bounding down the stage & Tony's salsa steps 💃 as they hype up the audience
Honey's gorgeous descending riff
the addition of the wind-down effect at the end
Trivia:
This is slightly reworked / truncated from the version VoicePlay submitted as their audition, removing the more explicit "Take On Me" section.
Due to their position late in the lineup, this performance was recorded at about midnight, seven hours into filming.
They hadn't been allowed to get comfortable while waiting, though, since the production team shuffled the groups between the boxes for each number.
.
Judges' choice
youtube
After each section of five groups performed, the judges chose one to compete in "the ultimate sing-off" showdown number, a last chance to impress. VoicePlay were in the second half with Ten, Element, The Filharmonic, and the AcoUstiKats.
.
Ultimate sing-off explained
youtube
Knowing that they had been in danger right off the bat, the guys decided to demystify the "ultimate sing-off" process in their own amusing way. They were very excited when the official Hostess account retweeted them a few days later.

.
Ultimate sing-off vs. Footnotes
youtube
[Here is a longer version with the judges' comments & elimination.]
And so the six professional entertainers in VoicePlay were pitted against the baker's dozen Ivy Leaguers in the Princeton Footnotes. With a pop song on the agenda, one might assume the youths would be more suited to the style. But classical training can only take you so far. Sometimes diversity of experiences is more valuable.
Details:
title: Ultimate Sing-Off – Bye, Bye, Bye
original performers: *NSYNC
written by: Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze, & Andreas Carlsson
arranged by: VoicePlay & The Princeton Footnotes
air date: 9 December 2013
My favorite bits:
the premise of it being an actual fight both groups are training for
each VP section representing a distinct competition style (martial arts, professional wrestling, bodybuilding, etc.)
Tony busting out that swoon-worthy boy band timbre
(Okay, yeah, the Footnotes guy doing a dive roll over his bandmates onto a bare stage was pretty impressive.)
the guys' dismissively delicate little yawns while the Ivy Leaguers are trying to sound tough
Geoff planting his foot directly on Layne's ass while he's doing push-ups (and maintains good form, no less)
Layne's aggressive chin thrust when he starts beatboxing again
Trivia:
VoicePlay may have had a bit of an advantage with the choice of song. "Bye Bye Bye" was part of a boy band medley they were already performing at their concerts.
Since this was the last song filmed for the episode, the two groups had to perform it at around 1:30 in the morning. And then the judges had to deliberate.
When they performed this battle on the 2014 Sing-Off tour, The Filharmonic took the Footnotes' place and used the arrangement they hadn't needed during the competition.
.
When the dust settled, the judges saw more potential for VoicePlay continuing to improve and grow in ways that would benefit them for the competition, so the college boys were sent home.

Whether fleeing war, persecution, poverty or the effects of climate change, migrants and refugees worldwide routinely find themselves in great danger. Perhaps the most hazardous migrant trail of all is the Darien Gap, a wild, lawless stretch straddling Colombia and Panama. Before the pandemic, special correspondent Nadja Drost and videographer Bruno Federico reported from this perilous path.

A couple pieces of Félix-centric art.
1. A concept piece for a plot bunny of a storm chaser AU. In this AU, storm chasing symbolizes Félix's relationship with Pepa. She literally is the storm. The plot focuses on the MadriGuys, but features cameos from everyone else as well.
2. When I learned Félix's VA plays the trombone, I couldn't resist drawing that meme.

VAV Baron’s Playlist
In honor of Baron’s upcoming birthday, I’ve decided to celebrate by dedicating an informative post to him every day. Sooo here’s a compilation of all the music he likes/has referenced. All links included, enjoy~ (3/5)
(bc i’m the type of person who likes to go all out with research, i’ve linked all my sources in case anyone else out there is like that too. buuut keep in mind that some of these are things he either played as background music, sung only a few seconds of, or mentioned in passing. and even tho i linked the exact time he mentioned something at whenever possible, you’d still need to have a decent understanding of the korean language to know what he’s talking about. anyway i’ll continue to update this post as he mentions/covers more music)
Happy Birthday Baron ( ˘ ³˘) ♡
Where It All Began: Baron’s Audition Tape
Here we have Choi Chungyeop when he was a 19-20 year old [21 in Korean age] barista who passed his audition. He introduced himself as “21-year-old Choi Chungyeop who loves R&B” [lol what a cutie] then sang Big Bang’s “A Fool of Tears” and danced to NLT’s “Let Me Know.” He won over the judges with his dancing then ran over to hug his mother and sister. [At least, I think that’s who they are. The voice of the one in the green coat who said “really?!” sounds like his mom’s voice. This also makes me assume that the one in the beige coat is his sister.]

Watch Spanglish Fly play "Bugalú Pa Mi Abuela", "Los Niños En La Frontera" and "Boogaloo Shoes" at the Tiny Desk. More from NPR Music: Tiny Desk Concerts: https://www.npr.org/tinydesk Twitter: https://twitter.com/nprmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nprmusic Dec. 31, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- When the crew that is Spanglish Fly pulled in behind the Tiny Desk, the group's vibrant version of boogaloo raised the temperature in the NPR Music offices quite a bit. Whether displaying their party spirit or even the slow burn of social consciousness on the song "Los Niños En La Frontera," this band plays from the heart and engages both the mind and body. There is something absolutely infectious about combining the deep groove of an Afro Cuban tumbao bass line with a conga marcha, while the horns answer a call-and-response with the vocalists, all in a confined space. The horn ensemble work that drives "Boogaloo Shoes" is worthy of the song's title, a name taken from the classic dance form that drove East Coast teens crazy in the 1960s. The percussion immediately causes hips to sway. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg that makes Spanglish Fly one of the true pioneers of the boogaloo revival scene happening on the East Coast. For about sixteen minutes, our little corner of the building was the hottest Latin dance club in D.C. Behind The Album - Harry Styles Mini Series (Part 8)
Tumblr media
Part 7
“Mum? Gemma? What are you doing here?” He asked sneaking up behind you and looking at them, as they stared at you.
You had forgotten all about the fact you weren’t wearing anything other than Harry’s shirt when you felt the cool air hit your legs. You quickly blushed and tried not making eye contact with them.
“What do you mean what are we doing here?” Gemma scoffed. “You knew we were coming today.”
“Well, yeah, but I thought it would be later in the day...” he said.
“I ended up coming in last night, so Gemma suggested we come over and maybe head out for some breakfast, but uh apparently we should have called first,” Anne said looking over at you.
“Um... I’m going to go get dressed,” you whispered adverting your eyes towards Harry before excusing yourself from the situation.
While you went up to the bedroom, both Anne and Gemma walked inside while Harry shut the door behind them.
“So, I take it your busy?” Gemma asked.
“Kinda yeah, I ordered breakfast in for Y/N and me,” he said.
“I guess I didn’t realize she would be staying with you,” Anne said.
“Why wouldn’t she be staying with me?” Harry asked looking at her.
“Because you’ve only been with her for a few weeks,” she said.
“We were staying together while we were in Jamacia and we were only together for a few days then, so what makes a difference here?” Harry asked. “Especially since she’d be over here anyway even if she were staying in a hotel. This way it saves her money.”
“Right...” Gemma said.
Harry sighed. “Okay, I get that the first meeting wasn’t exactly ideal, but can you two please just be nice and give her a chance. Besides you two should have called before just showing up like you did,” he pointed out.
“How were we supposed to know you’d be half naked with some girl?” Gemma said.
“First of all, she’s not just some girl, she’s my girlfriend, and second of all, I wasn’t with her... we were standing together,” he rolled his eyes.
“It was implied,” she mumbled.
“Anyway, are you two going to give her a chance or not?” Harry sighed. “I really like and care for her and I’ve told you two so much about her already, so just please for me, give her the chance she deserves?”
“Of course we will,” Anne said.
“Thank you, Mum,” he smiled.
**
Once you were dressed in your own clothes, you went back downstairs and the food had already arrived. There ended up being enough for everyone to share, so you all sat down and had some breakfast together. At first, things were extremely awkward and you realized you hadn’t really been properly introduced to either of them.
“Um, I’m Y/N, by the way,” you said nervously. “It’s uh, nice to finally meet you two.”
“Nice to meet you as well Y/N, Harry has spoken of you often,” Anne said. “I’m Anne, and this is Gemma.”
Gemma looked over at you and nodded before going back to her breakfast. Out of the corner of your eye, you could tell Harry was sort of glaring at his sister. Great, you thought, just what you needed to cause a rift between them.
“You’re videographer right?” Gemma asked all of a sudden.
“Yeah, I’ve uh, always loved working with cameras both for film and print work. I went to school for it and eventually worked my way up to being considered a professional videographer, but I’m still pretty new in the business,” you said looking over at her.
“Is my brother the first artist you’ve worked for?” She asked.
“No, uh, actually I’ve worked briefly with a few artists in their music videos or other little projects they’ve needed. I’ve worked with both Nick Jonas and Joe Jones with DNCE, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, to name a few,” you said.
“Hm, “ she nodded. “And did you ever, hook up with one of them?”
“GEMMA!” Harry snapped.
“What? It’s a valid question!” She said to him. “How do you know this isn’t what she does? She works for an artist, hooks up with them, and moves up the ladder,” she said.
“She is right here,” you said. “And no, I’ve never hooked up with anyone I’ve worked with before, so that’s not what I do. I get hired for a job, I do it, and I’m done. Sure, I have a few friendships with some of the artists I work with because I do multiple projects with them.”
“You shouldn’t have to answer that, Y/N,” Harry said. “Because my sister never should have fucking asked something like that.”
“I’m just looking out for you,” she said to him, again ignoring the fact that you’re sitting right in front of her. “You’ve known her for what a few months and you two are already living together and just so head over heels for one another? This is bullshit, this isn’t like you. You’re normally so much more level headed than this.”
“Gemma, “ Anne sighed.
Harry shook his head. “You do realize that when we were in Jamaica we were living together under the same roof. We were side by side working together and chatting pretty much every fucking day all day, so yeah, we got to know one another pretty well in that environment. Hell, we probably learned more about each other during our three months together, then you did with your boyfriend. And maybe, just fucking maybe, did you ever think that maybe I’m “different” with Y/N because I have real feelings for her and that this is the first time I’ve ever felt this way about anyone before?”
There were so many emotions going through you at this point. On one hand, you felt insulted and angry at the fact she believed that you slept around on your job and that you were practically using Harry. Then on another hand, you felt extremely awkward because you were the topic of conversation, but no one was really speaking to you. And you knew that Harry’s feelings towards you were something new to him because he had told you once before, but hearing him say it to someone else in defense for you, made you realize just how much you really meant to him.
“I think we all just need to calm down,” Anne sighed looking at both of her children. “Harry, you have to admit that things are moving sort of fast between the two of you and you two work together... that’s a little unorthodox.”
“It’s not like we’re getting fucking married,” he sighed. “And so what if we work together? Most everyone who works with me, I have a friendship with outside of our working together, so why should it be any different having a relationship with Y/N.”
Honestly, at this point you were being ignored so much, you honestly thought about getting up and leaving the room. However, you decided against it because it would make it seem as if you thought you didn’t deserve to be there, even though Harry was defending your every right to be there.
“Being friends with someone and having a romantic, intimate relationship with someone are two completely different things,” she added.
“You can’t have one without the other, Mum,” he sighed. “Look, maybe to you two it seems like Y/N and I are moving too fast in a relationship, but you also have to think about how we got our start. It’s not like I just met her and we started talking on the phone and went out on a few dates here and there and decided to get into a relationship. When I met her, we were living together... seeing each other practically 24/7. She was there as soon as I woke in the house, and there as soon as we all went to bed. We spent so many nights just talking to one another and enjoying each other. So, yeah while the timeline might be short, that doesn’t mean that our relationship and my feelings don’t count for anything. And we’re not even living together. She’s staying here while I have some things in London for work that she’s filming. And once we’re done with that, she’ll be gone back to her own house in her own city,” he said.
“And then what? You’ll just have a long distance relationship or only have a relationship when you need a videographer?” Gemma asked.
“We’ll make it work,” Harry said.
You sighed again looking at the three of them. They were still having their three-way conversation about you, without you. Even though Harry was defending you and your relationship, something he shouldn’t have had to really do in the first place, he still wasn’t really acknowledging that you were there and could take part in the conversation as well.
“If it doesn’t, then you’ll be screwed needed to hire someone new,” Gemma mumbled. “And how do you know she wouldn’t leak anything about you?”
“Because I trust her and I don’t exactly foresee it not working out between us,” Harry said.
“Of course you’re going to say that because you two are still in the honeymoon stage of the relationship,” she rolled her eyes.
“Oh, and when you got with your boyfriend are you saying that you saw you two not working out?” He scoffed.
“No, but I never acted like it was always going to be a forever happy ending between us either,” she said.
You got up from the table throwing the rest of the food in the trash, while Harry and Gemma continued their conversation. You even looked over at Anne, who was just watching the two of them banter with one another. You shook your head and finally just snapped.
“Do any of you even care that I’m still here and that I’ve heard every single fucking thing being said?” You said looking at them. “Gemma, do you even care that you just assumed that I’m with your brother because I’m working for him and that I want to further my career? Or that you use the excuse that you’re just looking out for him when he’s told you time and time again that he’s happy and cares about me because you think every fucking person he’s ever going to be with his going to be with him for his fame and money. Like that’s really sad that you can’t just let him be happy.”
“And Harry, I get that you were just trying to defend me and everything, but I’m a grown woman, I can defend myself. But honestly, you shouldn’t have had to in the first place, because as far as I concerned, I’ve never given either of you a reason to believe that I’m only with Harry for fame and fortune. If I was some model or some singer or whatever, would you think that? Or would you be okay with it because I’d make my own money and have my own fame? But you know what, it doesn’t matter right now because I’m removing myself from this situation right now since it’s not like I’m needed in this conversation anyhow,” you said before walking out of the front door and down the street away from his house, leaving him and his family behind.
*Let me know what you think! :)

BOHNES | EUPH.
Tell us about Bohnes. How did it come about?
I was in a band called The Cab, and it was kind of coming to an end. Mentally, I knew that I was ready for the next step. I started the band when I was 14. And so when you’re 14, what you want to do, and what everyone else in the band wants to do changes dramatically when you’re 24 years old. Think about how much you grow from when you’re 14 and 24. Exponential. It’s crazy.
Like two completely different people.
Exactly. There were guys in the band that didn’t like being in a band, that wanted to get “real” jobs and guys who gained confidence to do their own solo thing. It was one of those things where The Cab was almost like college. I learned so much, and I met so many amazing people, and we had the greatest fans in the entire world. Probably a highlight of being in The Cab was just meeting all of the fans and hearing their stories. I hit this point in my life where The Cab was going to, at least temporarily, be finished. And I had no idea what to do. I was completely like “Well, shit.” Do I go get a real job? Do I start another band? Go solo? And it was really important to me to not have the new project called “Alexander DeLeon” because I didn’t want anyone to think I felt like my name was bigger than the band. It had nothing to do with “Oh, you guys, my brand is bigger than the band and I am big enough to where I’m going to do my own thing.”
You didn’t want to pull a Justin.
Well… hey. Justin can do no wrong. But totally, that’s not what it was. I was going in a different direction and try something new. To be honest, the two years between the band and Bohnes were pretty brutal. Fun, but I really had to figure myself out. I was drinking every night, partying, and enjoying not being in a van or tour bus. That’s where I was from 17 years old for about 7 years, touring 11 months out of the year. I had lost girlfriends because I just wasn’t home, fell out of touch with a lot of my family.
So, I went to Paris and started traveling the world to kind of figure out what I wanted to do and figure myself out. When I was in the Catacombs underground, where there are millions of bones, I’m gonna call myself Bohnes.
Tumblr media
How’d you get started in music? Before The Cab days, take me back to the beginning.
My mom could not hit a note if she tried. You could give her a million dollars and she wouldn’t be able to sing in tune. But my dad was a professional singer. And his mom, my grandmother was a singer who was pretty famous in Mexico, she sang mariachi. It was kind of in my blood. When I was a little boy, I wanted to either be Batman or a professional basketball player…
I mean, duh.
Yeah, I mean Batman/Bruce Wayne and on a basketball team. All my friends got tall and I stayed short, so I was like well… I have to adjust my goals.
So… Batman it is.
Exactly (laughs). When I was in high school, I was actually the opposite of what I am now. I studied really hard, all my friends would party on the weekends and I would not because I played sports and got really good grades, I wouldn’t drink. Late high school, everyone would go to the desert, do bonfires and drink beer. I’d have basketball games or exams and when I was bored I just bought a guitar and would write songs at night.
I would have dinner, do my homework and then from about 11pm to 6am I’d write songs. Then at 6am, I’d hop into the shower, go to school and everyone else would be groggy and still waking up but I’d be fresh and awake. Then when school was over, at basketball practice, I’d crash and go nocturnal. So I always enjoyed writing at night because there’s no distractions, no texts, my mom’s not yelling at me.
For those who haven’t heard “Six Feet Under” yet, how would you describe it? I blasted everything you have on Spotify and I’m loving “Witchcraft” and “Six Feet Under” so far.
“Witchcraft” is a Frank Sinatra cover, which I love it because my dad used to sing it to me as a kid. I think I have four songs up on Spotify and three of them are demos I had put up about a year and a half ago. I put one tweet out, no videos, no press, I just wanted people to know that I was doing something else, but I wrote those songs really fast. So “Six Feet Under” is probably the first song that I actually consider Bohnes. This is what it’s going to sound like, this is what it is.
People that listen to the whole album, like my friends and some fans, who I’ve shown the entirety of the new album, everyone says that it sounds like if Justin Timberlake started a heavy rock band like Rage Against the Machine. There’s a lot of heavy guitar riffs, there’s definitely darker elements on the album, but the vocals are super pop. So instead of hearing synth lines, there’s heavy guitar. My background is listening to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, NSYNC, so the harmonies on “Six Feet Under,” if I could show you the vocals without any music, the chorus sounds like a five-part harmony.
You worked with some talented people on the track. How was it working with Matt Johnson (Matt & Kim) & Bryan Sammis (The Neighbourhood, Olivver The Kid)?
Bryan was in a band called The Neighbourhood and I was a big fan, so he left, probably for the same reason. I don’t think there was any crazy animosity and did Olivver The Kid and La Bouquet. So I did “Six Feet Under” with him and the next single with Matt. Matt’s interesting because he’s in an indie rock band but also loves hip hop. So I wanted to challenge myself and work with people– Like for The Cab, I worked with Bruno Mars and pop writers who did Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez songs, so for this project, because it’s more rock n’ roll, I want to work with people who were in rock bands. Because my vocals are so pop, I need people to just dirty them up a bit and bring them back down because it’s just so poppy.
youtube
Tell about the music video. What inspired it?
The music video for “Six Feet Under” was shot in Nara, Japan, which before Tokyo, was the capital of Japan. I think the theme park was built in the late 60s or 70s and the owners and builders originally wanted to create a DisneyLand and Disney said no, but Walt said he’d help. When you’re in this park, there’s Main Street, there’s a mountain that looks like the Matterhorn in Disneyland LA, there’s a castle and everything’s in a circle around the castle… It’s pretty dead on. I remember going online and going down the rabbit hole, which is the Internet, and found “the coolest abandoned places.” And #1 on all these lists was this abandoned theme park.
I flew all the way there, I didn’t have access. It was illegal to get into. And because I didn’t want people to catch me, I stayed 2-3 miles away and brought only two videographers, one was a girl who could be a videographer and an actress, and my friend Justin Clough, who was the main director. We stayed in a hotel and at like 3am, we put all the camera gear, got flash lights and had to walk 3 miles down a highway. If you call a cab, Japan’s such a respectful country that the cab drivers will call the authorities and be like “Just so you know, I just dropped these kids off at an abandoned theme park and they’re probably up to no good.”
Dude, we walked 3 miles and the scary thing was that it was still dark when we got to the park, we had to wait for the sun to come out to film. We hid in a haunted house until the sun came up then we ran around and filmed. There were also security guards, so whenever we saw one, we had to break into a building and hide. We broke into the haunted house, an arcade, hid in bushes by a rollercoaster. We couldn’t talk either. Imagine filming a video without being able to talk and only whispering or using hand motions. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life. It was insane. That probably would’ve cost half a million dollars to do.
What do the skull masks represent?
Ironically enough, we filmed the video before we had the song. I watched the video on repeat and kind of got lyrical and musical ideas together from the video. It was almost like scoring a short film with a pop song. It was challenge. It pushed me to think in a different way. It was a completely different thought process.
The masks represent that Bohnes isn’t just me, it’s a thought process and a universe that I built. Anyone could be Bohnes, and underneath man, woman, gay, straight, doesn’t matter where you’re from, your sexual orientation or the color of your skin, underneath it all, you’re bones. The masks represented that we’re the same and anyone could wear that mask and we’re all people: we all live, die, fall in love, lose, fail. That’s who we are at our core, and again not to be morbid, when you die, everything disappears and your bones are left to tell your stories.
Tumblr media
What can fans expect from your upcoming album? Does it follow any recurring theme or concept?
It’ll be out early next year. Yes, it’s as close to a concept album without it being a concept album. One of the reasons the project is called Bohnes is because it was at a point in my life, where it really hit me. Life and death really hit me. Death is actually this incredibly beautiful thing because it forces you to live. If we all lived forever, there would be unlimited amount of time and we wouldn’t catapult ourselves into adventures because we could do it later. Life is short, so it makes us want to travel the world, fall in love, and do these things. I guess the entirety of the album is based around time and life and death.
My favorite song on the album is a song called “Coffins” and it’s a love song and the main lyric in the chorus us “If you walk out the door, know that I will too, I hope they build coffins for two.” It’s kinda realizing that one day, you will die but being okay with it knowing you have someone you’re walking life with that’ll go with you.
Any plans to tour soon?
I think I need to get music out so there’s more content and for people to understand what the Bohnes world is. But, definitely I would love to tour. If enough people like the music, I’ll be touring endlessly again.
To what extent, if any, does your personal style and look reflect your music or your new persona as Bohnes?
I think rock n’ roll my entire life has affected how I dressed. I found this picture a few days ago I had like spiked hair that was pink tips, I think I’d buy those studded bracelets from Hot Topic. Growing up, I went through every phase of rock n’ roll. I went from listening to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles to listening to AFI, The Refused, Rancid, Alkaline Trio that went into Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco. The first rock band I ever heard was Queen.
My dad raised me on listening to Freddie Mercury. I think that’s also been a big inspiration to the project because if you listen to a Queen album, you can have “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” which sounds like an Elvis song, and “Another One Bites The Dust” which is a funk song, “Tie Your Mother Down” which is rock n’ roll and then “Bohemian Rhapsody” which is an opera. I loved that they could have so many genres on one album, but when Freddie sang, you knew it was one album. And Justin Timberlake does the same thing, “Drink Your Way” a country song, “Senorita” a Spanish-flavor song, “Rock Your Body” which is a Michael Jackson-Prince sounding song. I love that their voices tie everything together. I always try to keep that in mind. Don’t let the music put you in a corner.
I have a song that sounds like an acoustic James Taylor song, but on the same album that’s like incredibly heavy like Rage Against the Machine and somehow they’re tied together with my voice and the lyrics.
We saw you went to Burning Man on Instagram! How was it? That’s definitely on our check list of many festivals to go to.
Burning Man was Mars. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever been to. It really makes you believe in people again. In this world, you watch the news and it’s crazy. It’s tragedy after tragedy. Going to Burning Man, where my phones just didn’t work so I put them away, you’re in the middle of nowhere. You just meet people, and you’re not talking about pop culture, or anything but what you’re feeling and what inspires and motivates you and there’s just something super magical about meeting people who aren’t on their phones.
Tumblr media
Sometimes I just need to throw my phone across the room and just be like “Ok, that’s enough.”
Especially these days with the news, I would go on Twitter if it was just my friends, but seeing what’s going on in the world.
I feel like between the weather and the politics, I feel like everything that’s going wrong is just telling us that we fucked up.
Totally. There were, what, four major hurricanes in a month? On top of all the shit that humans are doing? I’m from Las Vegas so it’s been a rough week for me with what happened there. You almost become desensitized to a lot of it. Vegas was a wake up call for me because it was my hometown. Sandy Hook hit me real hard, because those are kids. I lost my mind when that happened. I couldn’t comprehend. I think Sandy Hook woke everyone up, and you thought there would be change and they didn’t. But Vegas was my hometown and my city, and I have friends who got shot, and my mom had tickets to the concert and I called her and she wasn’t answering her phone. Your mind goes places. Luckily she didn’t go to the concert.
All you can do in these circumstances is, you can’t let them win. You can’t stop going to music festivals, you can’t give up on people, because as soon as that happens, they’ve won. If anything, I’m going to go to more music festivals and love even more and put out even more music. I put out a song today called “702” which is an acoustic song that speaks directly about the Vegas events. I was crying so hard the night before because I thought my mom was there, that my voice on the demos was really scratchy. I put that song out and, if you’re reading this, it’ll be on Spotify and iTunes and everything that I make will go to the victims of the families and you can also donate here.
youtube
If you had the ultimate celebrity power, what would be on your tour rider?
I would put a basketball court in my house… which I’m working on doing, it’s a pipe dream. If I had Jay-Z money, I would buy a house in about 20 major cities and they wouldn’t be extravagant, it wouldn’t be over the top. Super modest houses, 2-3 bedrooms in all my favorite cities. Rome, Tokyo, New York, Nashville, Kawaii, cottage in Iceland. Just places I could stay and to encourage my friends and family to travel more and be like “don’t pay for hotels, just stay at my place and go see the world.” For everyone that I love, I just go say, “get the hell out and go see the world.” Buy little houses and apartments, no mansions just little spots.
Where has been your favorite travel destination so far? Why?
From my last year in The Cab to now, I think I traveled to about 65 countries. Can I give you 5?
Iceland: You can drive around the entire country in 5-7 days and you can see beaches, glaciers, waterfalls, icebergs, volcanoes, auroras, anything you can think of, Iceland has it.
Rome, Italy
Tokyo, Japan
Nashville, TN
Kawaii, Hawaii: For some reason it doesn’t get as much respect as Maui or Honolulu, it’s gorgeous. It’s like Bora Bora Jr. and only 6 hours away from LA, it’s incredible. It’s extremely cheaper than Bora Bora and not a 26 hour flight (laughs).
What was your last Google search?
Can I look? (laughs) “Misdemeanor trespassing consequences Alabama” because I’m filming an acoustic performance in abandoned buildings in Alabama and I’m thinking there was a 50/50 chance I’ll go to jail or get slapped with a misdemeanor and just in case it happens, I wanted to prepare myself and know my rights.

As of April 20 2017, Sam Fein has not changed the name of the gallery and has not set up a time to meet with community activists, artists, & residents. As far as we can tell Sam Fein is still taking submissions from artists on her website.
On March 20th , Mi Casa No Es Su Casa, an anti-gentrification insurgent art collective by New Yorkers for New Yorkers, issued a statement saying the collective : publicly condemns the name Entitled Millennial Trust Fund chosen for this new art gallery, fully knowing that art galleries and gentrifying millennials with trust funds have consistently displaced working class families and POC from our neighborhoods. The name of this gallery only adds insult to injury, is in poor taste and will be taken as an act of aggression toward the community of Crown Heights. We will assume that any artist willing to be associated with such a gallery is complicit with the actions and carelessness of this gallery.
We are asking the community to:
1. Continue to sign and share the petition. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/641/667/059/
2. Continue to put pressure on Sam Fein to set a meeting date with community members by May 7th, 2017. This meeting would include multiple community stakeholders and could be conducted  in-person, through SKYPE or via conference call.

Encanto Storm Chaser AU
Based on an actual conversation between me and a storm chaser friend.
This AU is an allegory of Pepa and Félix's relationship. Pepa is literally the storm.
The Madriguys live and storm chase in Oklahoma in this AU. Félix is from Colombia and is the actual meteorologist on this team. He saved up the money and got the scholarships necessary to attend the University of Oklahoma, the best meteorology school in the world.
Agustín is originally from Albuquerque, NM and attended OU for reasons I haven't decided on yet. He is the team driver, as he's the only one who ever bothered to get a license.
Bruno is from a rural small town not too far from Oklahoma City (though it sure looks it), and OU was the nearest university that offered a filmmaking major. He would love to make telenovelas, but he's also keenly interested in doing documentaries. He's Félix's videographer. He has a twin sister, Julieta, whom he introduces to Agustín at some point.
The three met in a niche social group for Colombian Americans. Sort of the same way Montanans gravitate toward one another when we find ourselves in foreign environments, like Kansas or Florida.

April 23rd Selfie 2018! Answer truthfully please. Any-type of relationship. Either it is a friendship or a relationship isn’t it a two way street? You shouldn’t be the only one putting in all the work. You shouldn’t be the only who talking. You shouldn’t be the only one to show you care right? Shouldn’t your friend do something? #Friendship #RAW #WWE #RememberingBruno #RIPBruno #WWENetwork #Bruno #Wrestling #Love #Pride #EMStudios #filmmaking #writer #youtuber #filmmaker #filmphotography #instagay #gaypride #selfie #selfieboss #director #videographer #videography
