god i have so many ideas about Professor Layton and I can’t even begin to draw them all nor do I know how I would even visually get my whole idea across but consider.

what if Descole did get captured by Targent at the end of Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy starts out with Layton helping out Grosky investigate a series of missing Archeologists, among which is of course Desmond. (there’s a whole ramble in the tags oops)

OKAY because I don't want this info attached to that one anon I'm dumping it here and adding some info

uhhh let me explain this fucking insanity (edit: now called past(?) problems modern solutions) au

- technically modern + age swap + other stuff meets canon

- the main modern + age swap + other stuff are luke, clive, hershel, and theodore (there are others in the modern/age swap/other stuff universe, but they don't affect the story besides the 4 being like "oh so that's what they're like here")

- luke and clive are adopted siblings bc clark adopted clive when clive's family died in an apartment fire due to faulty wiring

- targent actually ended up killing rachel and leon while the boys where out and the adoption agency asked clark to take them in but he couldn't and so clive and luke decided on adopting one each (luke got theo and clive got hersh) bc they didn't want the two to be separated and they both have flats in the same building literally down the hall from each other

- luke is in veterinary school and clive is a reporter of an independent political news site before they get thrown in canon

- luke and clive both have some behavioral issues but have went to therapy for it and are mostly better now but under stress can kinda move back into it (I wonder what could cause that stress /s)

- luke ends up getting thrown into canon w the boys bc hersh was staying over when it happened (honestly I haven't really thought of how it happens bc this isn't like. a fully fledged au or anything with a plot but I have some ideas) and goes to scotland yard once he realizes he's not in their london anymore and says he's in a predicament, but won't provide more details so chelmey suggests the help of professor layton

- clive gets thrown into canon by himself and he gets arrested bc he looks almost exactly like regular clive except with some peach fuzz bc he was TRYING to grow a beard but his genetics hates him lol

- clive gets thrown into the same jail as canon clive and that's when people start getting confused bc they look and sound similar enough and one's refusing to talk about himself and the other's having an existential crisis over the possibility of there being 2 of him

- layton calls des over (bc fuck you they're back in contact w each other here) once he sees hersh and theo bc he recognizes them (he doesn't recognize luke) but luke and the boys only think they traveled in time, not universes so they don't really think much of it until layton's explains that he and des's names are actually theodore and hershel bronev and luke's face drops because he never mentioned their original last names and then layton's like who are you and luke tells him that his name is luke triton and then everyone in the room is like what the fuck is happening

- anyways that's the bare bones abt it. there's some more stuff but honestly it's not like the most interesting concept and it works better more as a "canon learns about modern stuff" and/or character studies with canon seeing what kind of lives/relationships they could have kinda gotten if the world wasn't so cruel kinda au and not a fully-fledged standalone one

- (edit: okay so if you're interested at all I may or may not be writing some drabbles of scenes w them interacting so uh. wat h out for that ig)

- that being said I'm debating on whether or not I want the canon to return home so maybe I can kinda split it into two insane aus wherein one group actually gets home and the other doesn't. who knows (edit: bc I'm throwing cringe out the window I'm also considering letting them visit each other somehow if they get home)

so uhhhhhh yeah that's about it I still haven't even named this whole mess lol

I drew some more stuffs

So the first one (top left) was from me thinking of a hypothetical scenario where Layton was the elder sibling, and Desmond the younger. Just based on what we know a lot would be different if that were the case, one thing in particular being that Hershel Layton would almost certainly not be Theodore Bronev, but more likely the actual Hershel. The most likely scenarios I could come up with are either only Hershel gets adopted, leaving Theodore behind, they both get adopted by the Laytons, or perhaps the Laytons find another family close by them who can take in Theodore. The drawing here’s basically supposed to be when the Laytons show up, coming to adopt Hershel, but he’s hesitant to leave his brother, while Theodore looks concerned for him, wanting him to go with them to be safe

Next I drew Curious Village Lucy, because I wanted to draw Curious Village characters yesterday. Granted that didn’t end up happening because then I just decided to draw Des’s family, but maybe next time. I don’t know how to draw poppies. Maybe I should have draw forget-me-nots instead

Then I tried to Eileen in the Layton style, but I don’t think I did that well, especially with the eyes. I think I need more practice with this style. She just looks off

Then I just randomly decided to draw Eileen and Des waking up in the morning, because why not? I like Desmind with long hair

Then I drew a slight redesign of Eileen, mostly because a: the ponytail is difficult to draw, and b: I wanted to give her a popped up collar. Note, she’s supposed to be wearing a dress, sort of like Emmy, but I never draw her bottom half so you can’t see it. The glasses are still a pain

Finally, I decided to draw Des with his daughter, whom I have redesigned for the third time, and at this point I think I’m just gonna go with CV Lucy being his daughter (if you wanna know thoughts on that here’s the link), because I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who thinks it and I like it (I do plan to make a follow up to my theory now that I’ve played through Curious Village). I think I’ve finally settled on a design I like. Also I decided to make her headband red so that each member of this family has a splash of that red in their designs; Desmond with his tie, Eileen with her glasses, and now Abbigail with her headband. I didn’t give Desmond glasses because I’m sticking with the idea that he wears them solely for show, and doesn’t actually need them, it’s just part of the disguise, so him not wearing them is him being more genuine

Story I’m most proud of: From Now On… A prequel to Ready Now, where Layton decides to look after the Barde kids. I find it hard to write from Layton’s perspective (because he’s much smarter than me), but I think I wrote him well here, with a lot of references to his past. (Randall, Claire, vague memories of his brother…) And I like the parallels between the Bronev brothers and the Barde siblings. I was kind of hoping it would get more attention, so if anyone fancies checking it out… The link is here. Please don’t be scared off Descole fans. Hershel Layton

Ok, imagine this scenario. Claire marries Layton and they have Flora, Alfendi and Katrielle. Then Claire dies, leaving Layton as a single parent. Now imagine Layton singing this song. I'm not crying you are.

Anton Herzen

In my fictional music video, Anton starts singing this song as he watches Sophia leave from his tower. Like the Beast, he keeps climbing higher so he doesn't lose sight of her. As the song progresses, many years pass and the castle starts crumbling around him. But Anton stays by the window, waiting evermore for her to return, knowing in his heart that she won't.

Janice Quatlane

A song about trying to move on after a loved ones death? An opera song about trying to move on after a loved ones death? Literally made for Janice to sing. Now imagine her in a black dress, taking flowers to Melina's grave.

Randall Ascot/The Masked Gentleman

Literally everyone and their grandmother has made the comparison between The Count of Monte Cristo and Miracle Mask. I don't care, I'm doing it here. Imagine if Professor Layton was a musical and Randall had this as his villain song. He wants revenge on Henry for taking his girlfriend.

A song by a dying mother who wishes she could see her son grow up? Could apply to many Layton characters. But I chose Rachel because she suffered a lot but stayed strong to the end.

Ok, here me out. Everyone at Targent loves Swift right? I mean, really loves Swift. So, when he's feeling down they would totally sing a song about how great he is to cheer him up. No one fights like Agent Swift! Douses lights like Agent Swift! In a wrestling match nobody bites like Agent Swift!

Flora hasn't been seen since Unwound Future and her siblings are concerned.

Fires have scarred most of the land she flies over as she returns to the mountains. Farmland, towns, forest and open field. Some of it is as terrible and fresh as that which she left behind her. She hopes Isedd will find some rest, before the final battle comes. He had seemed too tired, there among the ashes on the Pelennor.

Smoke rises from the Golden Wood, and there is movement at the East-gate of the dwarves’ realm too. Even by the broken bridge near the Carrock there has been fighting. Most of it seems past, though, or at least caught in a pause, and the winds bring her safely to her eyrie in the cliffs below Belaram’s roost. Her siblings and neighbors call out greetings as she swoops past them before climbing to the summit to face her lord.

“Matwyn,” Belaram says as she lowers herself. “It has been some time. I feared you lost.”

“I am relieved to find you here, Lord Belaram,” she says. “I have much to report.”

The Great Eagle bids his favored scout speak and she does, recounting her brief but terrifying sojourn in Moria and the ultimate failure of her original mission there, her meeting with Isedd and her journeys with him and his sister afterwards. 

“They march on Mordor itself now,” she finishes. “I would still be trapped beneath the mountains if not for Isedd, and with your leave, I would return to see this through with him.”

Belaram regards her silently, deep in thought. “You have traveled far, Matwyn, and swiftly. I do not wish to lose you again to distant skies so soon. Rest for tonight. You have done well.”

Matwyn dips low again and returns to her nest, where Broga welcomes her home joyfully. Despite the weariness of her journey, she stays up with him for hours.

“Will you stay, this time?” he asks her. She settles her sore wings.

“I have one more journey I must make,” she says. Broga sighs. “You knew I would be often away when you took me as your mate.”

“I did,” he says. “But that does not make the parting any easier.” Matwyn rests her head against him for a long moment. “Broneval was right, though. It is no hardship I regret.” Matwyn fluffs herself.

“She spoke to you, too?”

“Yes. Broneval the Far-sighted gave me and all my nest-mates words of our futures.”

“How many did she see, I wonder,” Matwyn murmurs. Even after all this time, she has told no one but Isedd anything of what Broneval said to her, and that only because she thought it unfair to keep words spoken about him secret. 

Matwyn’s rest is short-lived. Belaram calls her to his roost at dawn and tells her that Gwaihir will lead their host east.

“I know you wish to return for your own reasons, but I would have you with us for your knowledge as well.”

“As you command, Lord Belaram.”

The flight is long, though the winds favor them. Matwyn struggles to keep pace with the well-rested Great Eagles, but keep pace she does, and soon the ruins of Cair Andros are visible in the distance.

There is movement along the eastern banks of the Anduin, and Matwyn breaks away to satisfy her own curiosity. She will not be missed in the great battle. She finds Isedd by Leitha’s familiar bright mane, crouched in the undergrowth surveying the island. She nearly goes down to him, but she finds other scouts nearby and the larger force encamped further back, preparing an attack. She wheels around instead, back across the river and the plain to Crithost. They could use a bit of help.

Tolwin waves to her when she lands, but only stares at her blankly when she tries to speak to him. Gondorians!

“Let me see if my mother can help you,” he says.

Dúneth cannot help her. They go through two-thirds of Cirthost before they find someone who can understand her, a young boy who had fled Minas Tirith before the siege. Matwyn hops about impatiently until what armed force can be mustered in haste marches from Crithost, and soars ahead of them until she can hear the clash of steel from the gates.

“Matwyn!” Dúneth calls once they have made it inside the walls. “We make for the great court- by the three pillars!” Matwyn cries once in acknowledgement and goes to seek Isedd amid the fighting.

Even more Layton headcanons that come at me from outta the blue, but then reside rent free

-The time Anton and Nigel spent together is oddly similar to Taika Waititi’s mockumentary, What We do in the Shadows.

- Rook and Bishop have a specific routine when prepping for Targent missions that is oddly similar to this:

- Descole becomes the Darkwing Duck of the Professor Layton series (no I’m not accepting any constructive criticism)

- Randall sleeps in a position similar to Anna from Frozen with his head resting between his forearm, and he’ll wake up with the most ridiculous bedhead that Angela and Henry try not to die from laughter while fixing it.

- Janice and Melina would often entertain young children at the London library by reading the given book and providing the right music.

-Rachel loved Baking and she has this really good Hamantaschen recipe Hershel and Desmond fondly remember.

-During their youth in Targent, Leonard and Emmy had this really hilarious sibling rivalry when it came to impressing Bronev.

-One time, Katia tried her grandmother’s ballgown, (and it was very tight)

-Hershel and Claire also went to a Ceramics painting place for their date, and ended up painting a tea set together (Hershel still has it)

- A few animated shows Kat grew up on include, Tales of the tooth fairies, Mouse and Mole, and definitely Kipper Also Ernest finds Mouse and Mole to be really satisfying to watch. 

-Luke would totally be the type of person to watch Percy the Park Keeper.

-Flora also developed a familial bond with Bruno, as she got older in St. Mystere.

-Desmond also read to Aurora during the expedition related to the Azran, some stories included the Sword in the Stone.

How I feel about this character He’s my second favorite character in the series! I love Hershel sm, especially how he is in the prequel trilogy. He’s such a dork lol.

All the people I ship romantically with this character Claire, Randall, Clark and Brenda are who I mostly ship with him! I really like Clershel, Randall/Henry/Angela/Hershel (...Ranhengelershel???)or just Ranlay, and Clark/Brenda/Hershel. Multishipping is great. As for why I ship them all, it’s because I just love how their personalities mix and also I love the friends to lovers trope. ^^

My non-romantic OTP for this character Luke of course.I love seeing stuff with the Stansbury Gang and with Hershel’s college friends. I really love seeing the Bronev siblings interact like Hershel and Des and Emmy (Bronev did raise her) being siblings and bonding gives me so much life. Oh! And then there’s Hershel’s interactions with his students like Janice and Carmine! He just gets along well with a lot of people! ^^

My unpopular opinion about this character Hershel Layton has anxiety and is an absentminded mess. Uhhh other than that I don’t think I have any unpopular opinions on him that I can remember...

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Hershel isn’t a perfect character, he has flaws. I wish he could have moments where he’s at his lowest point or when he truly feels lost. I mean it’s not that much of an issue in games like UF or AL but like..idk I just wanna see more sides of him than the perfect gentleman/mentor. I would say it is a bit more of an issue in the crossover though. Hershel seems...too perfect, especially when compared to Phoenix.

That’s a good point! 

Well uncommon, it is a possibly that people can have kids when their older/people have much older half/full blood siblings.

So, it is possible (highly unlikely, but possible) that Al could be Bronev’s son/ half brother to Hershel and Desmond.

AU where Hershel adopts everyone and I mean everyone.

After the explosion, Layton takes in as many orphaned children as he can. But not Clive. Yet.

When Luke is born, Layton becomes a second father and mentor to him.

After last spectre, Layton doesn't think leaving the orphan Barde siblings alone is a good idea, so he takes them with him. In fact, since most of the children are working in a black market, Layton decides to take them all with him so he can be a positive influence.

Randall feels very guilty after nearly killing everyone, so Layton allows him to move in with him so they can repair their relationship. Henry and Angela come too.

After eternal Diva, Janice and Amelia are pretty sad about losing their loved ones so Layton promises to look after them for as long as they need.

Layton refuses to let his brother leave again and insists that they spend quality time together. Raymond comes too.

Umid leaves home to become Desmond's apprentice and since Desmond lives with Hershel, Umid moves in too.

Emmy feel terrible about betraying Layton, but without Bronev she has nowhere to go. Layton forgives her and says she is always welcome in his home.

Two weeks after Azran Legacy, Rook and Bishop knock on his door, admitting that they tried to find a job but they were almost arrested and have no money. Layton allows them to sleep on his couch until they find their way.

When Layton notices a single mother struggling with a pram, he naturally offers to help. Not knowing that the baby is the reincarnation of Aurora, he tells the woman that she can come to him anytime if she needs support.

After Curious village Layton obviously takes in Flora and becomes her adoptive father. Dahlia is unsure about losing her daughter, so Layton allows her to stay with them for a while.

Layton tells Katia that she has great puzzle solving skills and she can travel with them if she wants to. She says she will, but only if Sammy can come too.

After getting Clive out of prison, Layton says that he will give him a place to stay, but only if he works hard to redeem himself.

Since Dimitri loved Claire too, Layton allows him to move in so they can comfort one another.

After becoming unlikely allies, Don Paulo regularly crashes into laytons house uninvited.

By the time Katrielle arrives, since nobody had ever moved out, Layton is now living in a giant mansion with his extended family.
