Sidenote: writing this one gave me LOADS of ideas for day 17 (dancing) so !!!! it's hinted at a lot in this so yknow eyes peeled :))

The Blue Palace was cold. Though every banner, bed, and bench was adorned in the red insignia of Solitude, the palace was, by all accounts, cold. Lifeless. In Elisif's chamber, the fire roared and howled like wolves in mourning. Perhaps even the soul of the castle itself knew it had lost a king, she thought. The Jarl - no longer a girl, a Jarl - sat on the cold stone floor in front of the fire, knees pulled tightly into her chest, her delicate face cradled by her hands. Though she knew it had been days, she still felt as if his blood wrapped around her hands, intertwining her fingers. Perhaps it was his way of saying goodbye.

Behind her kneeled Lisette, now brotherless. As Torygg had always been her shoulder to cry on as a girl, she was now Elisif's. She picked up a brush engraved with gold and began to run it gently through her sister-in-law's hair, letting the soft strawberry blonde locks flow through her fingertips. She hoped it provided some sort of comfort.

Elisif's body was wracked with quiet sobs. The young Jarl had been crying almost constantly since the murder, forcing Falk Firebeard to take up the role of running the city in her stead; however Falk was Torygg and Lisette's father Istlod's youngest brother, and he too was in mourning for his lost nephew. He did not blame Elisif for her grief.

"What was he like?" Elisif whispered meekly, breaking the silence. The sound alone almost brought Lisette to tears; Elisif was supposed to be bubbly and full of life, just as she had been when they first met at the royal dance held in Torygg's name, years ago. To see her sister speaking with such sadness broke her heart.

"Hm?"

"Torygg. When he was younger, I mean." She clarified.

Lisette thought for a while, putting down the brush and instead taking small pieces of Elisif's long almost-ginger hair, braiding them into intricate patterns like her mother had done for her long ago.

"Fiery." She finally settled on, running a hand through her own dark blonde hair. "He always was a fiery one. I'm convinced it's because of the hair," she added, earning a shallow chuckle from the girl before her. "Father was a fiery one, he had the ginger hair, our grandmother did too. Do you remember her? Lady Ylara Ice-Tongue. She was at court when we first met, guarding the sweetroll table with her life."

This earned a genuine giggle and even a small smile from Elisif, who covered her lips with her fingertips in politeness. Lisette would have scoffed at the noble decorum in such a situation, but her sister was smiling, and that was what she cared about.

"I do remember. Torygg introduced me to her, right after you and I had our first dance." Elisif smiled wistfully, briefly transporting herself back to the Rain's Hand Ball, when she was but a girl, veiled in the finest dress her family could afford, hair braided so beautifully it would have brought a tear to Bellr's* eye. She would do anything to go back there again, relive it all.

"Torygg refused to speak to me for weeks because of that, you know. Stubborn as a mammoth, that one. Said I was "stealing his bride" from him."

"Bride?" Elisif said suddenly, finally bringing her head out of her hands to turn and face her sister-in-law. "But we'd only met that evening? It was a courtship ball." Confusion clouded her pretty features, almost masking the red puffiness around her bright green eyes.

"Oh you sweet thing," Lisette smiled in return, her dark brown eyes warm and nostalgic, "He knew he was going to marry you the moment he laid eyes on you."

A deep red blush came over Elisif's cheeks, and she turned to face the fire once more in a feeble attempt to hide it. Lisette briefly wondered if she had ever looked at Elisif like that, before she set aside her childish crush.

"I don't know what I'm going to do without him." The Jarl confessed.

"You have Falk, you have me, and you have your people. However you do know that I plan on leaving the city in the coming weeks."

"Do you have to go?"

"I'm a daughter of the north, sister. I've been away from the mountains for far too long. I am... hoping, that it will make all of this sink in."

Elisif suddenly spun around, throwing her arms around Lisette, clinging on as if letting go meant she would lose her, too. She tucked her head under her sister's chin, and began to quietly whimper.

"I'll miss you. Promise you'll come home?"

Lisette wrapped her arms around Elisif's shaking body and stroked her hair gently, whispering a quiet prayer to Mara and Kyne.

"I promise."

Listening to music during quarantine has been... interesting. This might sound obvious but I’ve been putting on more indoor music. Calmer stuff. Especially because those indoor listens happen in the morning or at night. I’ve been saving more of the dynamic stuff like upbeat pop and rap, energetic techno or loud ass metal for my walks.
