With careful fingers, he holds the nail in place, readying the hammer in his other hand. The door to the cabin opens, and James sighs. Yet another unwelcome visitor. Great.

Uneven steps approach from behind. "What's this? The men already fear you," Silver says, "A poster is not going to add to that in any measure. Not any more than your usual... presence - at any rate."

James keeps his gaze fixed upon the wanted poster, his visage staring back at him with cold, dead eyes.

"Why bother?" Silver asks.

Ignoring Silver won't make him any more likely to leave. So James responds. "It's nice to know someone wants me."

A pause.

"DEAD!" Silver exclaims, "They want you dead!"

"I don't think I can be too picky these days," James responds, bringing the hammer down upon the nail in two sharp strikes. He runs his thumb over the head of the nail, ensuring it's flush with the wood.

"I want you- alive! -captaining this crew!" Silver says, stepping forward.

James laughs hollowly. "It's not the same though, is it?" he says, accessing his work. The poster looked to be hung straight. "That's a need, not a want, borne from necessity." He sets the hammer down and turns towards Silver, "England wants me dead." He approaches slowly, each step deliberate and heavy. Staring the man down. "Desires to have me swinging by my neck." He stops. Grins. "A touch morbid, perhaps, but it's nice to be desired."

The original interloper pipes up from his occupation of James' chair. "I have a burning desire for you, Flint," Vane says, a satisfied smirk tugging languidly at his lips.

"If it burns," James drawls, letting his gaze drop purposefully to Vane's crotch, "should I dare go near it?"

Vane's smirk melts quickly into a frown.

I'm trying not to get involved in the flint vs stede (or black sails vs ofmd) war but I WILL admit, people calling flint hypermasculine are so fucking funny to me (tell me you haven't watched bs without telling me you haven't watched bs). Besties. I'm pretty sure he cries (like openly weeps, full on breakdown hysterically sobs) more often than stede. And that's just in season 1. The hypermasculinity is a red herring, not only possibly to reel in a specific audience at that time, but also like. Canonically. Flint puts up that attitude as a front. For important character driven and plot relevant reasons. That's pretty much explicitly said in the text ("my god, you really care what these people think about you? It must be awful being you" is a quote from this show, said to Flint, who looks mightily caught out by it - and that doesn't even dip into the reason WHY he cares, which is explored throughout the show and is an attitude that evolved and morphs as the circumstances change).

I'm not saying who to vote for, they're vastly different characters from vastly different shows that cater to vastly different audiences and needs. And that's fine! But if you wanna actually argue about the differences in character, maybe it's good to know what you're talking about first.
