obviously the Historical Figure Episode(TM) of Doctor Who that I’d write would of the Noted Author subset endemic to the RTD Era; it’d be called “Spiders in the Trenches” and be set in the middle of World War One ft. one Lt. John Tolkien.
idk if the main aliens are spiders or if they're just using giant robotic spiders as soldier-minions. Either way, Tolkien is a little too defensive when he says he's not afraid of spiders.
The alien invaders want some sort of shiny mcguffin, maybe as a power source for their ship? Or for a mega-weapon? We do not want them to get it, at any rate. Race to find the Shiny Power Jewel-Thing which has been lost somewhere in this like 20-mile radius of the Western Front.
When our heroes narrowly beat the spiders to the SPJT, Tolkien realizes that the spiders only ever attack at night because light hurts them somehow, so he holds the SPJT up as it flares and shouts, "Get back, foul creatures! Back into the shadows from whence you came!"
(They're from the dark side of a tidally locked planet, and made for extremely low-light conditions? The SPJT flares because it's controlled telepathically and it connected to Tolkien's mind when he touched it?)
Ideally Tolkien's first encounter with the Doctor is that he wakes up in the trench one day (after losing some men to a mysterious monster in the darkness a couple nights ago?), and there's 2 random strangers in weird clothes idly singing and playing an instrument which they stole from someone a couple bedrolls down. (This works well with Fifteen & Ruby's established inclination to music!)
We do need an Eowyn Moment, because that's iconic, but I'd split it: for dialogue, at one point the head boss evil alien boasts, "No human can defeat the Tenebrarachnid Empire!" and the Doctor replies, "Good thing they've got me, then."...
[I don't know if this is a Fifteen line yet. I know it's a very Eleven line]
...and there's a soldier in Tolkien's unit who is revealed to be secretly a woman! Who disguised herself as a man in order to enlist for ??? reasons, and who dramatically pulls off her hat to reveal her long hair.
The third notable local character is the sort who inspired Sam Gamgee, "...the English soldier, [like] the privates and batmen I knew in the 1914 war, and recognized as so far superior to myself.”
^those two can have a romantic subplot if it fits (comrades-in-arms is also extremely good). Tolkien, however, at some point shows Ruby the picture of his wife Edith which he carries at all times, she of the black hair and bright grey eyes, and is obviously ready to monologue about how wonderful she is.
In the same scene(?), Tolkien looks up at the stars and says their brightness shining afar, clear of all the horrors on the ground, is always a source of hope and strength to him.
Maybe also in the same scene? Tolkien is shown to make up stories for fun, or to read them in his little spare time - fairy tales and mythological epics. Maybe he tells them to the men around the fire, maybe he keeps a little notebook, maybe he just admits to daydreaming... When asked why, he paraphrases his quote from later life, " Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?"
At some point (Star-watching scene? when the Doctor inevitably has to explain that aliens exist? when they're all saying goodbye in the end?) there's a line drawing attention to the Doctor's parallels with Eärendil - eternally wandering figure of hope, sailing the stars in a ship with a light on top, not quite mortal...
Tolkien DEFINITELY tries to figure out the alien language, in writing or speech.
Something the aliens are doing is making people sick. Maybe the attacking robo-spiders are venomous, maybe there's a toxic byproduct of the alien ship, maybe it's a deliberate first assault of the planned invasion... By the end of the episode, Tolkien is very ill. The Doctor has figured out an antidote and given it, but Tolkien says goodbye to him and Ruby only to stumble to a medical outpost - from where, the Doctor explains to Ruby, he'll be sent home with this bad case of what's assumed to be trench fever. Between the fever and the brief psychic entanglement, and unentanglement, with the SPJT, he won't even remember most of this, and what he does remember, he'll put down to fever dreams amidst the horrors of war.
But he'll remember some things! He'll remember an eternal wanderer of the stars, unaging and undying and ever-hopeful, heralded by light (and a vworrrp vrorrrp noise).

To my taggers @hughungrybear, @ranchthoughts, @he-is-lightning-in-a-bottle, and @telomeke, this one's for you!
GET TO KNOW ME TAG :)
do you make your bed?
Not until I sleep in it!
what's your favorite number?
Feel like I don't want to spill it because I use these numbers in passwords lol
what is your job?
Executive management
if you could go back to school, would you?
Such a good question. I already did it once, mid-life, and it was THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE, and one of the first decisions I truly made just for myself. Would I go back AGAIN? I would have considered it if I didn't know so many PhDs who are at various levels of happiness with their decisions. So: maybe. What I really look forward to is being retired so that I can take free classes at local colleges and have all the time in the world to read through the syllabi.
can you parallel park?
Fuck yes, who do I fucking look like, someone that can't parallel park? /end-East-Coast-road-rage
a job you had that would surprise people?
Hmmm. I don't think I have one that fits this category!
do you think aliens are real?
I think humanity's definition of "life" is too limiting
can you drive a manual car?
UNFORTUNATELY NOT, and I really wanna learn
what's your guilty pleasure?
Watching dramas, honestly. I shouldn't feel guilty about it, but I'm Asian, so I feel guilty about everything
tattoos?
Love them on other people, never made up my mind on what I wanted to get, and I feel like that ship has sailed for me
favorite color?
My kids ask me this all the time: pine green, rich purple, deep pink, all oranges, aquamarine blue, and black
favorite type of music?
I can't choose one. My playlist is all over the place. Korean hip-hop and New Orleans bounce (THANKS @bengiyo) have been my workout go-tos lately
do you like puzzles?
I will when my kids have more patience to do them
any phobias?
HEIGHTS :(
favorite childhood sport?
Ice hockey
do you talk to yourself?
Absolutely, and I've needed to use meditation to manage the inner monologue over the years
what movies do you adore?
Oh gosh. All I think about lately are Thai BLs, so I think a lot about the impact of The Love of Siam and Dew, two movies that are so tough to digest, but are really well done. I've also had two wonderful Japanese movies on the mind for no reason, Like Father, Like Son: Soshite Chichi ni Naru, and Drive My Car.
coffee or tea?
Both, all the time, often mixed
first thing you wanted to be growing up?
I wanted to be a journalist. I was such a rabid sports that I thought being a journalist would get me the closest to sports that I could go without being an athlete. And I actually got to do sports journalism for a while, and it was fun! (But I quit media, which is a whole other thing, and now I'm much happier)
Who hasn't been tagged? How about the old Only Friends Ephemerality Squad, how y'all doing?! @lurkingshan (I think you already did this Shan) @neuroticbookworm @twig-tea @slayerkitty @thatgirl4815 @distant-screaming @clara-maybe-ontheroad

Which Greek gods would be Black Sails characters’ godly parents?
Black Sails -Percy Jackson AU
Watching the PJO series made me think about Flint being a son of Poseidon and then I thought more :)
(co-authored by @saintvainglorious )
Flint- son of Poseidon, god of the sea (obviously he looks just like him lol )
Evidence: controls the weather, can parallel park a boat, horse girl energy, summons sharks on command
Silver- son of Apollo, god of prophecy, music, the sun, healing, head of the Muses
Evidence: accidental prophet (what he says comes true), silver-tongue story telling, healing (survived amputation without getting terrible infection), bisexual coded
Anne- daughter of Ares, god of war
Evidence: violence, knife first ask questions later, red hair, always wears head protections (hat)
Max- daughter of / follower of Hestia, goddess of the hearth, home and family
Evidence: obsessed with creating a home, ultimate goal is to build a stable place and hearth, ends up giving up the governorship to sit by the hearth (just as Hestia did with her Olympic throne)
Eleanor- daughter of Selene, personification of the moon
Evidence: just as Selene loved the sleeping Endymion who could never love her back, everyone in Eleanor’s life could never love her in the way she needed/wanted to be loved. Always inconstant as the moon

Rewatching Treasure Planet for the 1000 time so here are my brain brrr thoughts/ things i noticed...
• During the opening scene where Jim is freely Solar Surfing the area, the music that plays over it comes back again in different tones: when they take off from the spaceport, when escaping the supernova and when Jim saves them from the planets destruction and that's pretty poetic
• I was thinking "why are they the only humans" but then why is anyone one species. I dont think you see 2 of the same species around. It also makes sence since they own/work at an Inn and the movie takes place on other alien planets
• Amelia from the start clearly states she doesn't like the crew Delbert hired, yet she doesn't push for him to hire a new crew or anything. She maybe be the captain and a really good one, but in a way (despite what Delbert says) she does know who she's working for
• Amelia and Arrows' whole dynamic. "I said something rather good before coffee" (- Amliea) they're besties
• Doplers bulky suit runs on 3 AA type batteries 😂
Tumblr media
• When Silver said to Jim "I have two new friends I'd like you to meet" before he revealed it was a joke to do chores, Jim looked genuinely interested in new people to meet. He's finally on a spacing adventure that is based on his favourite legend since childhood and he gets back to doing more things he was doing at the Benbow, so I think his disappointment is some what valid
Tumblr media
• Silvers crew either severely sucked up and faked their resumes and/or took out any competition to get that job, which is why they got the job and not a better crew
• Jim built his first Solar Sufer when he was 8 and probably did it as a way to be closer to his dad (I think he was still around at that age)
• In the flashback of his dad leaving, Jim woke up startled and worried. It then cuts to his dad already walking away then his mother crying at the table, so they probably had a massive fight as he was leaving which woke Jim up. They probably fought a bit before hand as well
• Morph turned into a wrench to help Silver, so Morph can hold the weight/strength of things he shapeshifts into
• Its been pointed out that Jim's cloths are a symbolism of his development. He starts with a black shirt and jacket then a tan shirt and black jacket and by the end its just the tan shirt.
He gets the tan shirt and black jacket when they start the voyage, but loses the jacket part way through the "I'm still here" sequence. He wears it again after Arrows death then loses it again when Silvers true intentions are revealed to him.
• Jim and Silver did fasten their lifelines after being told to - during the supernova - but they had to undo them to get the sail at the front of the ship. So if Jim hadn't caught Silver when he fell, even his lifeline would t have helped him
• When bracing themselves for the last Migella in the Supernova, Silver holds Jim and the pole, looking down to make sure he's ok
Tumblr media
• At the start of the movie Jim uses a Purp to sus out Silver, and its the same Purp barrel Jim is hiding in when he overhears what Silver says to the crew
- Jim using the purps to try and hint that he's onto Silver vs Scroop using the purp to emphasise that Silvers gone soft
• Treasure Planet was using drabooln currency before tiktok deemed it cool
• The parallels in Arrows and Scroops deaths.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Bonus cause:
Scroop: Do say hello to Mr Arrow
Jim: Tell him yourself!
• When trying to find the gate, the crew threaten to kill Jim but Silver looks worried. When he says "I suggest you get the gizmo going again and fast!" It was more a warning, cause he looks scared for Jim when they prepare to attack him...
Tumblr media
• B.E.Ns eyes going from green to blue I think is a little clever bit of symbolism. They started green which was the colour of Treasure Planet (map, portal etc) and then when he got his memory circut back and could help them get out, they changed to blue
• Morph, Morphs into things around him, which is why he copies what people say, he's Morphing/copies their words
• When Silver is saying goodbye to Jim he smiles up at him, showing his non cyborg side
Hope you enjoyed, feel free to tell me your thoughts on this movie, that I feel normal about

8, 17, 25 please and thank you
Thanks @owlsinathens my love!
8. You hope more people will come to appreciate ___ (a ship, a trope, an episode, etc.)
Oh my god I have so MANY! lol. This won't be all of them but I'm trying not to overthink these: A Song of Ice and Fire: More appreciation for the potential of Theon surviving and for Theon eventually gaining some FREEDOM in LIFE. More appreciation for the Theon Sea Reek symbolism (How the Sea Reek was a giant sea monster) More appreciation for Theon's prophetic dream (And how it parallels Jon's Dream.) More appreciation for Theon's connection to Euron and Bran. More appreciation for the symbolism of characters receiving a kind of weirwood stigmata (like when Dany eats the heart- bloody hands and mouth and then losing her hair to the flames, Catelyn Stark after saving bran, Theon- bloody mouth and hands, red leaf falling on his head, etc etc.) More appreciation for Tysha & Tyrion. More people tagging her as Tysha Lannister because FUCK YOU TYWIN. More appreciation for the Tysha is the Sailor's Wife theory. Tysha & Tyrion forever. More appreciation for the parallels between Theon & Jeyne and Tyrion & Tysha. More appreciation for Tyrion ships in general. More appreciation for Tyrion's dragon dreams that he STOPPED HAVING after his trauma and then the contrast with Daenerys beginning her dragon dreams as a response to her trauma. Daenerys x Tyrion as a ship. More appreciation for Mance's band (like literal band lol) of spearwives. Game of Thrones: The acting. I'm serious. I want there to be more analysis about it- I want to go into the tag and see paragraphs dissecting the minutia of Michelle Fairley's Red Wedding Performance, Alfie Allen as Theon performing Reek performing Theon, etc. Tyrion's trial. But also the actors that don't get as much appreciation for the early seasons- like Issac as Bran when Ser Rodrik was executed etc. Also more (or any lol) appreciation for the Reek foreshadowing in Theon's scenes in season 1 and 2. I'll do a gifset eventually about this. Appreciation and analysis of the 4 episodes GRRM wrote (I am actually going to do this myself soon and also make some gifsets of the scenes from these episodes.) More appreciation for the music and Ramin Djawadi. Not just the beauty of it, but the use of certain instruments for certain characters, the META of certain characters sharing a theme- like with Jon and Theon. Also, I would love it if there was a mass movement in the fandom- a petition or something for Ramin to write music to The Seasons of My Love. More appreciation for THE FIX IT FICS! More appreciation for the idea of Daenerys x Missandei x Greyworm as the show's three heads of the dragon. Got/Asoiaf: More appreciation for combining canons in fics, art, and other fan creations. More appreciation and understanding of gifmakers who take scenes from the show out of the show context to depict scenes from the books. Fire and Blood: The Sylvessie ship (Essie x Sylvenna Sand) Gaemoms forever. The conquerers as a TRUE threesome, with Visenya and Rhaenys in love with each other as well. (I would give anything if they portrayed it this way in the show adaptation.) HOTD: More appreciation for AEGON'S DREAM! I really love the exploration of the Targaryen Dreamers. Also more appreciation for Aemma Targaryen's birth scene. I can write more about this later but I loved the way they showed the horror that birth can be- especially when choice is taken away. Harlots: I hope people come to appreciate all of Harlots IN GENERAL. The whole thing. Watch Harlots, Love Harlots, Obsess about Harlots. Also, I would like more people to appreciation the ship Birchlace (Nancy Birch x Emily Lacey.) Seriously if you look at their interactions over the entirety of Harlots it makes SO. MUCH. SENSE. as subtext for a ship. I know it wasn't meant that way but. It is delicious. I really do still need to write this fic. Black Sails: More appreciation for Jack/Anne/Mark Read- and more appreciation of the transition of Charles Vane/Jack/Anne to Jack/Anne/Max to Jack/Mark/Anne.
17. The thing in canon that everyone loves and that you also love.
asoiaf: Theon's Godswood scene. The old gods, they know me. They know my name. Shoot that scene directly into my veins. Carve that monologue onto my gravestone. Harlots: "I loved your ma, you silly cunt." the line heard around the Harlots fandom said by the iconic Nancy fucking Birch! Black Sails: A STORY IS TRUE A STORY IS UNTRUE. And all the other amazing writing that makes my brain unravel. Madi's multitudes, Silver's speech about having no story. Flint's there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it. I have CHILLS.
25. a piece of advice for taking care of yourself in fandom spaces
Concentrate on what YOU love and don't feel bad about it. I'm serious. I have problems with this as well and it's hard NOT to care about what people think because part of seeking out a fandom for something you love is finding community in your enjoyment of something. But believe me, you will find your niche of fellow fans if you just fearlessly enjoy what you enjoy. And personally, I wouldn't even give what you don't enjoy any time at all. And really try to cultivate not getting upset if other fans are enjoying a headcanon or ship you hate or a character in a way you disagree with. And cultivate putting more of what YOU enjoy out there instead. (This is all advice I give myself too everyday and I don't do this well so I'm not trying to be all wise about it. It is just what I am trying to do and when I succeed it really makes everything more enjoyable.)

Hi, this is very random but I LOVE your edits!! SO SO much!! And I wanted to ask (if you feel like elaborating but no pressure!) about your editing process (I am a complete newbie). I am in awe of the connections you draw in your edits - do you first choose a song and then try to match the content to it or the other way around? And if you don't mind me asking which program do you use? And how do you get clean audio without the background music? ((I would greatly appreciate your advice if it wouldn't be too much of a burden, wishing you the loveliest of days<3))
hi there!! first off this is so sweet, and I really appreciate hearing that you like my edits!it's always so exciting to get that kind of feedback, esp since video edits arent smth ive done a Lot of or my primary form of fanwork, i guess
For some elaboration - I assume you mean the black sails edits (?), so I'm going to be answering for those. On the whole, I don't have a super well-defined process, so it definitely varies edit to edit, but in general, I tend to work off themes or ideas rather than audio! Especially since I'm not usually working with lyrics, in which case it would be a totally different story.
A lot of my black sails edits specifically are about highlighting a specific theme and how its paralleled over the show, so finding parallels usually is just me trying to remember different scenes which demonstrate the same concept, kind of. I have a file of the whole shows subtitles pasted into one place, so I do a lot of Ctrl+f with keywords (the 'you and i' video was built off literally just that) - and then try to arrange it in a way that makes sense for the BS narrative as well as the point im trying to make in the video. i also really love finding completely different conversations that feel like call and response, and setting them up against each other. Parallels! Contrasts! Etc
I try to work with an audio already in mind, though, generally, just because the flow is kind of determined by that. I didn't for the partners video, and I think it's a bit weaker for it, though i did adjust the music to suit it later. Picking a song if I have a theme in mind is really just going thru my soundtracks playlist, which is like 30% of all music I listen to, and picking smth with a vibe that fits + a pace and length that I think the video will match. (Sometimes I will also just cut the song down a bit)
The program I use is kdenlive, which is an free and open source video editing tool! It's not got quite as many features as smth like davinci resolve, but I find it works for my purposes, which are really just cropping, pasting, and a tiny bit of sharpen/recolour. that said kdenlive has a bunch of other features and options that I simply don't use and also don't know how because I haven't experimented, so its not like snip and move clips around is All you can do with it.
re: the background audios... this one is actually a process lol. i have high qual versions of all the BS eps with 6 channel audio, and ive made versions of each episode where ive isolated the central channel which usually has dialogue. however this channel also will have some slight background music or ambient sounds, so it's not really just the dialogue - but it works for the purposes of the video, where lower sounds like that may get hidden by music anyway. ymmv, it depends scene to scene, but I don't need it to be perfectly clean so it works for me. Ive isolated these channels through ffmpeg, which is a command prompt based editing thing, and isn't difficult to learn but isn't exactly the most user-friendly thing, i guess? However I understand ( @dykementality confirm?) that davinci resolve lets you just isolate audio channels of any clip you're editing, so like, that's an option. i Can give more detailed instructions on ffmpeg, or at least on the code that I use to make files w isolated audio, though honestly I've forgotten how to install ffmpeg (though it can't have been too difficult or I wouldn't have bothered)
I hope that helped you a little, pal! If you have any further clarification I'd be happy to help w/ what I know! And I hope you have a wonderful day also!

Reading the 🎃 messages and I can't help but notice the pirate theme. Chased 'round the seas. Choosing to walk the plank to protect her loved ones. Washed up at the Halloween party, as a mermaid returned shivering to the shore. Obviously Taylor has dressed as Ariel before, and the idea of her voice being stolen so she can't sing is an obvious parallel with her masters situation. But I can't help wondering if the messages hint at something in particular. A pirate-themed music video? A collab with Halle Bailey or Florence Welch? The pirate show Black Sails featured a lesbian couple, if Taylor wanted to pay homage to that in a video. Just throwing out ideas there, but after so much of the Karma music video proved reflective of these riddles, I'm keeping a weather eye on the horizon ☸️

Latest things meme... (Two posts in one day? Wonders never cease. Enjoy the ADHD flavor rambling below.)
Anyway, thank you always for the tag @kiriele!
Last song:
I have to again preface that most of my music consumption is for vid-related purposes these days.
I came across this hilarious meme that gave me my latest vid idea. It’s a photo of Paris Hilton picking out some ice cream treats, and overlaid on the treats are one Cassian Andor from Star Wars and John Silver from Black Sails. The captain reads “Actually, can I have five more of these [can’t escape the narrative] bitches?” And the OP writes “finally figured out why these two makes me so feral.”
I saw that and I felt like my third eye opened. Like. 🤯 Because there is a perfect thematic vid there showcasing these two’s specific struggles. Especially in the context of resisting an encroaching empire and and and... they really got sucked into the narrative and can't! fucking get out!! And then they end up believing in the cause (in their own ways) and ah ah ah...ahhhhh..
Okay that context being given, I went and spent all 5 minutes going “I need a song. I need a song for these two. Two sources, two voices? Maybe, maybe not. Male vocalist? Raging against the authority is punk, but I love mash-ups and pitting parallels and contrasts of with multiple musical sources. Wait, I already had a DJ artist who made this other mash-up I loved am going to use for a vid…surely he has something that could be… interesting or great for Cassian Andor and John Silver. Surely??”
Friends. Friends. Even those of you who don't know or care about vidding, this is just a sort of beautiful mini-nirvana moment when you discover the perfect song (especially so quickly).
BEHOLD. My Cassian Andor and John Silver vidsong that I may or may not make but you hear it first:
youtube
I can see the whole vid unfolding before my eyes. Frantically trying to download Black Sails and searching my 3 hard drives to make sure I had in fact nabbed Andor earlier for a different vid idea. Yet…I have so many other vid things in my queue and only so much hard drive space and brainRAM.
Currently watching:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I want to like it more than I do. I like elements of the characters, (La’An and Chapel are extremely compelling, Ethan Peck is bringing a great human cheekiness to his portrayal of Spock, Pike remains a great Space Dad) but there’s still something that’s not gelling fully with me. Which is sad because I am so on board with the more episodic angle again and some of the classic themes and motifs from TOS but it’s just…idk, I think I need a whole post to think aloud on it.
Currently reading:
Ahsoka by EK Johnston, Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski. Almost done with Spin State by Chris Moriarty.
Currently obsessed with: Oh, I’m burbling with obsession…
In my reading I’m still losing my mind over how much I love Baptism of Fire. Milva sucker punching a peasant. Regis’ entrance to the narrative. ZOLTAN, sloppy drunk. Geralt dreaming of Ciri…Ciri dreaming of Geralt. 😭
Ahsoka learning how to pretend to be a Normal Twice-Orphaned Teenager. How do people interact outside wartime situations and executing battle strategy?? Honey… (I need to go look for some post-O66 Ahoska fic novels…)
ALSO!!! @dragneto has also infected me witcher fic idea that’s got me foaming at the mouth. I want to tackle the idea but I’m also dying to finish my WIP chapter first before I can play. I’m so obsessed with this ridiculously horny and sad idea.
I also have 4 vid ideas I’m chewing on like a rabid gremlin and it is definitely to the point of obsession. Mad that I won’t be able to follow through in the short or medium term…too much on the brain, lack of focus, stress from life stuff, other WIPs eating away at me.
Two Witcher ones vid ideas: my Phil vid…she’s so bad, I love her. Sexy song, lots of bad. And I am revisiting an old pan-canon humor/thirst/thematic vid about Geralt… Which is more about how the characters see him.
Then I got my Star Wars Rebels idea which I’m having technical problems that’s keeping me from starting.
…And then this Andor/Black Sails thing…
tagging @deerna and @danegen and @shetiger and @simuran and @whatkindofnameisvolta ...and anyone else who wants to go.

Hello i see you haven't heard of black sails?? I am DELIGHTED to inform you that it's a four season masterpiece and that if you like pirates you should ABSOLUTELY check it out.
It's set in 1715, and it's a prequel to the story Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It tells the tale of where the treasure un that story came from; how it came to be hidden on the island, how Long John Silver came into existence, how he knew James Flint, etc -- and it is SO fucking good.
It SEAMLESSLY merges real life historical pirates like Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, etc, with the various fictional characters from Treasure Island (the aforementioned James Flint and John Silver; Billy Bones; etc) and is genuinely the best tv show I've ever seen in my life. The character development that all the characters go through is unparallelled, and it's also very much a study in motivation - what motivates people to do the things that they do; what can drive people together or apart. The way that alliances and enemies shift around and swap places with each other based on character motivations and what each individual values is so amazingly done and so interesting to watch. You'll have two people who could not be more aligned with each other, and then one thing will change, and suddenly they're on opposing sides-- and youve got sworn enemies who, again, one thing changes, and the enemies suddenly find themselves as allies.
It's also very much an analysis of colonisation and the power of the English empire. One of the characters, Flint - he hates the British empire with every cell in his body, and initially you don't get to know his motivation for that hatred; you know he wants to find the gold and you assume it's because it's gold, right, of course he wants it; everyone wants gold. But then you find out WHY he hates the British empire and everything that England stands for; you find out WHY he wants the gold; what he wants do do with it, and suddenly not only does his character have SO much more depth than you thought it did, but also, you look at every heinous thing he's done so far and you're like "Yeah actually you are SO correct for this, keep doing what you're doing."
The writing for the show is PHENOMINAL - there are several pieces of character dialogue that I deadass want to get calligraphied so I can frame them and put them up on my wall. And the layers to the show and the themes of it, the reflections of society, the analysis of what a story truly is, are incredible once you start noticing them.
It's the kind of show that you can watch over and over and over again and still pick up new details. New themes new parallels new Easter eggs new musical motifs new messages. Honestly I say with my whole chest that it is unquestionably the best show I've ever seen in my life. I ABSOLUTELY recommend you check it out. ESPECIALLY if you already like pirates.
this sounds absolutely brilliant omg alfhskdj thanks lovely ✨✨
i am so two cakes excited about this and gonna write black sails on my forehead so i remember to watch it soon

Juno gets highest-resolution close-up of Jupiter's moon Europa Observations from the spacecraft's pass of the moon provided the first close-up in over two decades of this ocean world, resulting in remarkable imagery and unique science. The highest-resolution photo NASA's Juno mission has ever taken of a specific portion of Jupiter's moon Europa reveals a detailed view of a puzzling region of the moon's heavily fractured icy crust. The image covers about 93 miles (150 kilometers) by 125 miles (200 kilometers) of Europa's surface, revealing a region crisscrossed with a network of fine grooves and double ridges (pairs of long parallel lines indicating elevated features in the ice). Near the upper right of the image, as well as just to the right and below center, are dark stains possibly linked to something from below erupting onto the surface. Below center and to the right is a surface feature that recalls a musical quarter note, measuring 42 miles (67 kilometers) north-south by 23 miles (37 kilometers) east-west. The white dots in the image are signatures of penetrating high-energy particles from the severe radiation environment around the moon. Juno's Stellar Reference Unit (SRU)—a star camera used to orient the spacecraft—obtained the black-and-white image during the spacecraft's flyby of Europa on Sept. 29, 2022, at a distance of about 256 miles (412 kilometers). With a resolution that ranges from 840 to 1,115 feet (256 to 340 meters) per pixel, the image was captured as Juno raced past at about 15 miles per second (24 kilometers per second) over a part of the surface that was in nighttime, dimly lit by "Jupiter shine"—sunlight reflecting off Jupiter's cloud tops. Designed for low-light conditions, the SRU has also proven itself a valuable science tool, discovering shallow lightning in Jupiter's atmosphere, imaging Jupiter's enigmatic ring system, and now providing a glimpse of some of Europa's most fascinating geologic formations. "This image is unlocking an incredible level of detail in a region not previously imaged at such resolution and under such revealing illumination conditions," said Heidi Becker, the lead co-investigator for the SRU. "The team's use of a star-tracker camera for science is a great example of Juno's groundbreaking capabilities. These features are so intriguing. Understanding how they formed—and how they connect to Europa's history—informs us about internal and external processes shaping the icy crust." It won't just be Juno's SRU scientists who will be busy analyzing data in the coming weeks. During Juno's 45th orbit around Jupiter, all of the spacecraft's science instruments were collecting data both during the Europa flyby and then again as Juno flew over Jupiter's poles a short 7 ½ hours later. "Juno started out completely focused on Jupiter. The team is really excited that during our extended mission, we expanded our investigation to include three of the four Galilean satellites and Jupiter's rings," said Juno Principal Investigator Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. "With this flyby of Europa, Juno has now seen close-ups of two of the most interesting moons of Jupiter, and their ice shell crusts look very different from each other. In 2023, Io, the most volcanic body in the solar system, will join the club." Juno sailed by Jupiter's moon Ganymede—the solar system's largest moon—in June 2021. Europa is the solar system's sixth-largest moon with about 90% the equatorial diameter of Earth's moon. Scientists are confident a salty ocean lies below a miles-thick ice shell, sparking questions about the potential habitability of the ocean. In the early 2030s, the NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft will arrive and strive to answer these questions about Europa's habitability. The data from the Juno flyby provides a preview of what that mission will reveal. hm intrigued by the notion that silver and miranda having a conversation would have fundamental ramifications for the plot of black sails but i think i personally am not seeing the vision. like i understand they are directly paralleled in terms of their relationships w flint (the motif of showing/finding a way, opening a door) but their motivations as characters are so incredibly different i feel like in a conversation between the two of them they would just not intersect. bc pre-radicalization miranda is concerned w returning to civilization because it represents laughter and music. silver’s allegiance to civilization is about survival and his conviction that it will always win. i don’t think he ever buys into the cultural all-importance of Western Civilization the way miranda does. it’s a matter of naked power and practicality from the start for him. post radicalization miranda...well if she hadn’t died i think she’d just be a lot like flint, and we see silver have conversations with flint. And i think the way flint fills miranda’s role in his relationship to silver in s4 is more significant than how silver fills miranda’s role in relation to flint in s3.
Also just in terms of their characters i don’t think they would like each other LMFAO

Thor's foot tapped against the deck of Asgard's starship, his boot matched the beat and tempo of the pair of Murphys who appeared to be auditioning…? The King, and possibly Captain, had been distracted by the bards who performed their ballad about tossing a coin and something called a witcher. Regardless of the meaning, it certainly sounded good. Several craftspeople had also been ensnared by the music, a few seemed to panic when Thor joined them, before the King gestured that he approved of the break. The Allfather noticed Nathaniel's unruly black mane centered above his awkwardly broad shoulders, seated in front of him. Thor quietly moved parallel with the judgmental deity. "Was this necessary?" Not only did Nathaniel know these two, but he knew of their talents. "You asked us to be thorough." Nate and Eva had taken Thor's direction seriously. "’Find me the finest crew in the realms. One to sail over the edge of the world with.’" Nathaniel quoted the Thunder God's request back at him, sans snark. Lochlan and Gael's rendition of the Netflix tune ended, the third song the pair had played for Nate's approval. A rather energetic smattering of applause erupted from the informal crowd and he took note of it. "Thank you, we'll be in touch." "What? No." A slightly flabbergasted Thor stopped his applause then looked from the bards to Nate, then back at the pair of minstrels. "You're welcome to join the crew - if you understand the danger, of course." Nathaniel aggressively scratched at his parchment with his quill, visibly annoyed that Thor had usurped his process. "Fine." "Is Eva on board?" Thor wondered aloud and tried not to revel in his destruction of Nathaniel's exercise. "Yes, she's inspecting the royal suites." Nathaniel paused and considered the fact that there was no innuendo in that statement. Huh. "Let's join her." Thor started off toward the stairs that led below decks, the familiar swoosh of Nate's cape followed close behind him.
