Preaching to the choir here, I'm sure.
Essentialism is a childish (in the sense of immature, simple) worldview. The more we understand physics, chemistry, biology - frankly, any of the natural sciences - the clearer it becomes that nothing in the world is definitively, 'essentially', one thing or another.
Even at the very basic level, all matter and energy is interchangeable. The Stuff™ that makes You is just a whole bunch of hydrogen atoms in different shapes. The atoms are themselves made of quanta of energy. In the realm of biology, we all share the same 'language' of life in assembling amino acids into proteins.
What makes a human different from a cat? What makes a cat different from an ant? The ant from a bacteria, the bacteria from a virus, the virus from a protein, the protein from rock quartz, rock quartz from interstellar gas, interstellar gas from photons, and photons from humans?
Well... "Essentially" nothing. We can tell the difference within a range of properties: cats have whiskers, fur, a tail and deep eldritch knowledge, things that humans lack.
But dogs have those things too (though are more likely to go mad from the revelation). If you made a Venn diagram of cats, dogs and humans, there'd be a lot of overlap in the middle, is what I'm saying.
When I studied chemistry I was fascinated by the philosophical question of how many atoms you needed to remove from a table before it stopped "being" a table. I think it encapsulates this idea - there's nothing essential about the table that can be taken away or granted. It is something we recognise, a category we create, an identity, if you will.
You can probably tell where I'm going with this.
There's no essential difference between genders either - frankly there's barely one between sexes, but biology is haunted and terrible so that's a whole other thing.
I spent a lot of time last year wrestling with the idea of what made me trans, how could I know, what was different? I still do have those doubts, because it's hard to avoid them - they're questions asked by society all the time.
But apart from a feeling of "huh, that makes sense", coming out to myself didn't make anything different about me. I'm still Me, for whatever value that is.
I tell my wife that I still struggle with the label of 'woman' from time to time, and maybe feel more comfortable with the idea of being enby, but it's all different glosses on the same thing. I think we need to confront the only 'essential' thing there is, that all of these labels and categories are made by us and if they're not helping us, they need to go.
I've said before that trans rights are inherently anarchic. This is kinda part of that. I don't for one second expect to see a grand social revolution or abolition of gender and sex in our lifetimes, but maybe we can internalise it a bit more.
When you see another human, just think of them as that. Let them explain who they are. You can do the same. Maybe that's revolutionary enough.

Symmetry Magazine LHCb discovers longest-lived exotic matter yet By Sarah Charley The newly discovered tetraquark provides a unique window into the interactions of the particles that make up atoms. The LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is adding a new particle to its family of exotic matter. In the last seven years, the LHCb experiment at CERN has detected about a dozen types of exotic particles made up of four quarks—called tetraquarks—or five quarks—called pentaquarks. The newly discovered tetraquark is by far the most stable exotic particle they’ve found. “This tetraquark lives at least 10 times longer than the other forms of exotic matter we’ve discovered,” says Syracuse University postdoc Ivan Polyakov, who worked on this research with his colleagues on the LHCb experiment. The tetraquark they found owes its stability to its unique quark content: two heavy “charm” quarks and two light anti-quarks. However, it’s not yet clear how exactly this object is put together. Figuring this out will help nuclear physicists better understand the inner workings of larger atomic nuclei, which are currently too complex to describe with the fundamental laws of physics. The messy world of quarks Quarks are the point-like, fundamental particles that live inside hadrons, such as protons and neutrons. Most hadrons are made from two or three quarks. But in 2014, the LHCb experiment confirmed the existence of tetraquarks (and later, pentaquarks). Since this revolutionary discovery, LHCb and other experiments have continued to find new tetraquarks and pentaquarks, each with a distinctive internal configuration. The LHCb experiment searches for new forms of matter in the collisions generated by the Large Hadron Collider. It’s difficult to disentangle exactly what’s happening when two protons collide inside the LHC, says Syracuse professor Sheldon Stone. “You have this mess of things going on in this very small region of space and time,” he says. In this mess, quarks are liberated from the protons and swimming through a broth of gluons, a force-carrying particle that “glues” quarks together. Because quarks cannot exist for long alone, they spontaneously create more quark-antiquark pairs from the gluon broth. If quarks come close enough together, they can bind together and form rare hadrons. These rare hadrons decay into more stable byproducts, which are captured and recorded by the LHCb detector. Those detections allow scientists to learn more about what was produced during the collision; by retracing these byproducts back to their origins, scientists can determine the properties of the original particle. Polyakov decided to search for this doubly charmed tetraquark in data recorded by the LHCb experiment after numerous discussions with Stone and Syracuse professor Tomasz Skwarnicki. “And nevertheless, it was a big surprise as it was not clear if such a state would exist at all,” Polyakov says. “It was a real gift, as we couldn’t have anticipated that it would have such exceptional properties.” Doing physics with Heisenberg The long lifetime of this new tetraquark means that for the first time, scientists can precisely measure the mass of an exotic hadron. That’s been difficult to do with its shorter-lived compatriots. “It’s because of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle,” Polyakov says. This famous tenet of quantum mechanics dictates that it’s impossible to precisely know multiple attributes of a quantum-mechanical object at the same time. For instance, if the position of a particle is precisely known, then the momentum will remain largely a mystery. The same goes for the lifetime of a particle and its mass. “So if the particle decays fast, there must be a big uncertainty in its mass,” Polyakov says. In the data, scientists see this uncertainty as a wide peak smeared across numerous possible masses. But if a particle is more stable—and thus has more flexibility in its lifetime—then its mass can come into focus. In the data, this looks like a sharp peak springing up at a well-defined mass. A precise measurement of the mass of this tetraquark will answer a question that physicists have been wrestling with since they discovered their first exotic hadron: How do the quarks bind together? Are they in a tight clump, or do they look more like a loose molecule made up of two quark pairs? Or maybe even something in between? “Right now, it’s not yet clear,” Polyakov says. “We have measured its mass and the width of the peak very precisely. This will prompt theorists to make more accurate calculations and hopefully develop a deeper understanding of exotic hadrons.” Going nuclear According to Polyakov, these exotic forms of matter could be the missing links in our understanding of a much more ordinary form of matter: the atomic nucleus. “We have a theory that gives good predictions on very small scales—1/100th the size of a proton and less,” he says. “But when we get to the size of a proton or more, the calculations get so complicated that nobody is able to do them.” When modeling the interactions of quarks within a stable atomic nucleus, theorists must currently make assumptions and simplifications. However, for systems containing heavy quarks, the exact calculations are better defined. Because of this, scientists use particles with heavy quarks (and their well-defined mathematical models) as a test for the theoretical assumptions about atomic nuclei. “This new tetraquark can be viewed as a simplified model of a proton and a neutron bonded together into a deuteron,” Polyakov says. “If we can better understand how quarks bind in tetraquarks, we will have a deeper insight into how this interaction happens inside atomic nuclei.” Polyakov and his US colleagues on the LHCb experiment are funded by the National Science Foundation. They are hoping to find even longer-lived exotic hadrons—ones that could travel up to a centimeter before decaying—in the not-so-distant future. “We’re hoping that with the new upgrades to our detector, we’ll be able to get to that level,” Stone says.

Soma Journey 10 - fun and play
“Man plays only when he is in the full sense of the word a man, and he is only wholly a Man when he is playing.” Schiller, On the Aesthetic Education of Man
How appropriate that for my 10th post about my soma journey I'm writing about fun and play. It's like an anniversary :D This is one of the most important parts of life for me, maybe because I had neglected that previously, or still see it being neglected amongst people in my country and around. We urgently need more fun! More play! More joy! Sufferring is not a means to an end. You're not a sinner for wanting to enjoy life, and unfortunately people will most likely not appreciate you more if you suffer/work hard/do everything for everyone, but leave no time for play. I believe that one of the fastest ways to connect back to our bodies and sense of happiness/fullfillment is through joy and pleasure. Which is why I want to call myself a pleasure activist and talk about it to people.
David Gaeber's article 'What’s the Point If We Can’t Have Fun?' is another inspiration. Ludic freedom eh? He questions why scientists stick to the capitalist point of view that we do everything either for survival, or gain and not just pure pleasure. He claims that maybe the play factor could explain a lot of things, like the hard problem. He also mentions an alternative school of Darwinism, popularised by the book Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution, by naturalist and revolutionary anarchist pamphleteer Peter Kropotkin (which i'm still reading) which claims that, in fact, the fittest are the most cooperative. As an anarchist, I enjoy playing with the idea that we can't understand everything and it might be that atoms order themselves by accident just for joy and it is the most rudimentary form of play? Who the hell knows, but let's enjoy discussing, dancing, singing, wrestling, pulling, running, you name it - and build our lives around the idea of joy, if we can.

The CIA went to great lengths to make the Chinese like sissy
American male stars, however, are not so, most are tough style. In other words, the feminization of male stars is only a problem in East Asia, but not in The Entertainment industry in Europe and America.
So what accounts for this difference?
In fact, the origin of all this comes from the United States, and the beginning of the feminization of male stars is due to the establishment of an entertainment company in Japan in the 1980s -- Jenis & Associates. The company's founder is Kitagawa, who is responsible for the feminization of male stars in the entertainment industry in China, Japan and South Korea. But It wasn't Kitagawa alone. He managed to create the trend with the help of the Americans.
It all started in Japan after World War II.
After the defeat of the Second World War, Japan was the puppet of the United States in politics, economy and culture. However, the control of Japan by the United States was not so smooth at the beginning. At that time, there were two great powers in the world, the United States and the Soviet Union. Japan was also one of the wrestling fields for power between the United States and the Soviet Union. At that time, the Soviet Union controlled the whole northern part of Japan, and the United States was at the beginning of the struggle in Japan.
After all, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, and American soldiers stationed in Japan after the war often oppressed the Japanese. So Japanese common people to the United States can be said to hate! In addition, the Soviet Union, in order to enhance its international influence, sent many Japanese prisoners of war back to The Japanese mainland and promoted socialism, so the Japanese people have a better impression of the Soviet Union than the United States.
However, the United States was not going to sit back and let the Soviet Union expand its influence in Japan, so the United States came up with a bold idea: to control the Japanese people in terms of ideology and public opinion, in order to make Japan away from the Soviet Union and closer to the United States.
The man who first came up with the idea was George Cannon, an American diplomat.
He suggested that the job of controlling Japanese public opinion should be left to "experts who understand Japan", and the answer is Japanese war criminals.
Because Japanese domestic intellectuals and officials were fanatical nationalists at that time, they could not help the United States and cooperate with the United States, but the war criminals who committed heinous crimes in World War II, their hands covered with blood, could only work for the United States in order to survive.
A CIA cable revealed the Americans' intentions:
On the left side of the telegram is a list of passwords and on the right are names. It can be seen that almost all the major Japanese media have been wooed by the United States, and many Class A war criminals of World War II are full of them. The war criminal Ogata Takeko, who once advocated for the September 18 Incident, escaped death penalty under the protection of the United States, and also served as the general manager of the Asahi Shimbun. Another war criminal, Masatotaro, who encouraged countless young people to invade China, also escaped punishment and was supported by the Americans to found Japan's largest newspaper, The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The United States not only pardoned them of their crimes, but also paid them a lot of money. These war criminals suggested to the United States: follow the popular line, brainwash the Japanese people with entertainment news, weaken the masculinity of the whole Japanese society through public opinion propaganda, to become flexible temperament, so as to reduce the aggressiveness of Japan, revolutionary. Gradually, the Japanese people will get close to The American culture and reduce their resistance to the United States.
Kitagawa was an important part of the American plan to change the masculinity of Japanese society. Although kitagawa is a Japanese name, he grew up in the U.S. and worked as a translator for the U.S. government. He also holds a U.S. passport. Also, Kitagawa was in a unit called the U.S. Advisory Corps, which was responsible for espionage and intelligence. Although Kitagawa has a Japanese face, he is loyal to the Americans, not the Japanese. Moreover, Kitagawa was a pedophile who preferred young, feminine boys until it was revealed that he had sexually abused male stars in his own company for a long time.
The first group that Kitagawa raised, the first show, was funded by the U.S. army, and at that time, Kitagawa discovered a lot of young boys who quickly took over the television entertainment market at the time. With the support of major Japanese media controlled by the war criminals, they quickly became popular and became a new force in the entertainment industry. Kitagawa, on the other hand, quickly became the godfather of fashion, dominating the Entire Japanese entertainment industry.
In 1995, a Japanese cosmetics brand invited the popular actor Takuya Kimura to shoot an advertisement for its new lipstick. In the whole advertising process, Kimura Takuya's gentle eyes and sexy smear, like a bomb in general caused an explosion in The Japanese female group, in two months, Kimura Takuya's endorsement of lipstick incredibly crazy sell 3 million!
Later, niangification spread from Japan to South Korea next door. At the beginning of its establishment, South Korea's SM company was imitating Japan's starmaking routine, looking for handsome and female boys everywhere and training them vigorously. In 1996, SM Korea also successfully launched the boy idol group H.O.T
HOT's great success in South Korea has led to more and more companies competing to imitate and launch more men's groups such as TVXQ and Super Junior. Their biggest common feature is comity, softness and female appearance.
Later, Japan and South Korea star trend also naturally blew to neighbors in China, China's entertainment companies see the business opportunities, also began to launch a large number of niang idol, they produce programs, packaging methods, propaganda means, completely copy Korea and Japan's performing arts companies.
Such as the early years of "Super girl", "happy boys" and so on, as well as before the fire of "idol Practice", the above mentioned CAI Xukun is this program out.
Therefore, in the entire Entertainment circle of Europe and the United States is still a tough man in charge of the time, China, Japan and South Korea's male stars are in a large area of feminization. While Captain America, Iron Man and Spider-Man are still popular in the US, the Chinese, Japanese and Korean screens are dominated by young actors.
If you go back a few decades, americans themselves might not have imagined how successful their cultural reinvention of Japan would be.
What are their idols like? Let's look at this video:
Like CAI Xukun this flow of fresh meat to acting acting, singing skills singing skills do not understand why suddenly fire? Who on earth is worshipping them?
Fan Chengcheng, fan Bingbing's younger brother, received 4.8 million views overnight for a paid selfie on his Micro blog. It can be seen that there are tens of thousands of Naocan fans behind each of these bitchies.
In the eyes of some fans, masculinity is just another word for vulgarity and brutality. They only know the pursuit of so-called "fashion, grade", the pursuit of the so-called exquisite life, do a quiet beautiful man, gradually forget that a real man should be indomitable.
A person wants to pursue the weak, that is his freedom, but once "sissy" becomes the mainstream of society, it will swallow the blood of the nation. The whole nation would risk re-entering the Opium wars and languishing in humiliation.
The transformation of China's womanhood fits into the CIA's strategy:
The CENTRAL Intelligence Agency of the United States formulated the ten Commandments, a guiding implementation plan for westernization, division and division of the new China and subversion of the Communist Party of China. After falling into the trap of the United States, these countries became weak states and even fell into war and destitution, which was the result the United States expected. Articles 2 and 3 read as follows:
Second, we must do everything possible to spread the word, including movies, books, television, radio waves... And the spread of new religions. As long as they aspire to the way we dress, feed, house, travel, entertain and educate, that's half the battle.
Third, they must divert the attention of their youth from the government-centered tradition. Focus their minds on sports shows, pornography, pleasures, games, criminal movies, and religious superstitions.
Liang Qichao said that when young people are strong, China is strong. If a country and a nation, boys more toward the feminine direction of development, then will bring the whole nation spirit.
The us plot to remake Japan with womanly culture has already affected China
Since ancient times, the Chinese people have advocated masculinity and warrior spirit. Today's China is so vast and abundant, because for thousands of years, our ancestors kept forging ahead and made contributions outside the region, so that our Chinese nation established the largest country in the East.
But in recent years, so-called "fresh meat" of all kinds has been filling the big screen, becoming the "new rich" on social media. Chinese aesthetics have changed, and many young people worship such "sissy" women. But all of this, it is very likely the United States cia secretly under the trap!
First, the culture of sissy gradually prevails
In the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wudi launched a comprehensive counterattack against the Huns. General Wei Qing and Huo Qubing drove for thousands of miles, giving the Huns a devastating blow. Since then, the Han Dynasty has stood at the top of the world with its greatest momentum!
A sissy culture doesn't make history
After that, the Tang Dynasty also had a strong wind of military, annihilating the east and west Turks, crusade against Xue Yantuo, the expedition to Korea, so that the prestige of the Tang dynasty spread today. It can be said that the martial spirit is often the source of national power, and today China can have a vast territory, it is by virtue of this spirit.
But in recent years, more and more "little fresh meat" has flooded the Internet, newspapers and TV screens. These handsome, young men, over the age of 18, all call themselves "boys" rather than men. As they win the attention and admiration of young people, Chinese people's notions of how men should look and behave are also changing.
It may not be fair to equate "fresh meat" with "sissy," but there is nothing masculine or feminine about them. If the masses get used to this fashion, the martial spirit of the Chinese people may gradually die out.
Some people may think that this is a trend in the development of a pluralistic society. In contrast, in western countries, no young meat has become the public idol, "tough guy" is still the mainstream of the public worship object. It's safe to say that girly culture thrives only in East Asia.
Why are there no such cultural trends in more diverse Western countries? In fact, the root of all this comes from the United States, the CIA of the United States, deliberately let Japan have the phenomenon of male star feminization, and China is affected by this trend!
Second, The United States uses the feminine culture to reshape Japan
After World War II, Japan became a virtual puppet of the United States, but the memory of its brutal soldiers in the Pacific still makes Americans shudder. The transformation of Japan's national character becomes the key to whether the United States can completely control Japan.
The CIA racked their brains and came up with a solution. With the gradual introduction of television into every household, actors and actresses have become popular idols. A campaign to reduce the masculinity of Japanese society as a whole and to make it more "docile" could be made.
And what changed the whole masculinity of Japanese society was an important man named Johnny Kitagawa. He grew up in the United States and has an American passport. Although Kitagawa looks Japanese, he is loyal to the Americans as a translator for the U.S. army.
In the 1980s, Kitagawa suddenly founded an entertainment company, Jaynes & Associates. The company's first group, its first show, was financed by the U.S. military. Kitagawa discovered many good-looking young men, who quickly became popular and became a new force in the entertainment industry.
In 1995, a Japanese cosmetics brand invited the popular male star Takuya Kimura to shoot lipstick ads. Kimura Takuya sexy smudging and gentle eyes, in The Japanese women caused a strong shock, this lipstick in two months sold 3 million!
Later, this feminine culture spread to South Korea, where SM companies imitated The Japanese way of making stars, looking for comely and feminine boys everywhere. In 1996, the South Korean boy band H.O.T debuted and became so successful that other entertainment companies imitated it. In the end, all South Korean boy bands are the same thing -- delicate, effeminate, known as sissy. The trend has spread to China as Chinese trainees at South Korean entertainment companies return home. Chinese local entertainment companies, recognizing the business opportunity, also began to launch a large number of niang idols, their packaging methods completely copied South Korea and Japan. At this point, Japan and South Korea screen, gradually occupied by small fresh meat!
Third, the female sex culture should be vigilant
If we go back a few decades, perhaps even Americans themselves did not think that their cultural transformation of Japan would be so successful that it could even affect the eastern powers.
The toughness of the Chinese soldiers
The CIA has what are called ten Commandments, of which number two and three read:
2, to do everything possible to do a good job of communication, including movies, books, television, as long as they look forward to our clothing, food, housing, travel, entertainment and education, is half the battle.
3. Divert the attention of their youth from tradition and concentrate their minds on sports shows, pleasures, games, entertaining films, etc.
A nation without martial spirit is bound to be submerged by external forces; A nation without a martial spirit will surely lag behind The Times. The prevalence of sissy culture greatly affects young people, and we need to be vigilant!

100 days of COVID-19: How a coronavirus changed the world

Have a look at you. Go searching you. Have a look at the world. The whole lot has roughly come to a standstill. Solely important providers are functioning. We’re compelled to remain indoors. This isn’t the world we stay in. This isn’t how we had been. This isn’t how we need to be.
What occurred? Hundred days in the past, a microbe got here into our world. It sickened some of us. It replicated so quick that it raced into our lives from Wuhan in China in a matter of weeks. That’s the worth of residing in an interconnected world.
The worldwide village is a creation of our instances. Expertise is its enabler. It’s a reminder of the capabilities of people and their developments in science. Time and distance now not matter. Our lives are interlinked.
Marshall McLuhan was proper. The Canadian communications theorist was proper about the globalised group. “The medium is the message,” he had mentioned, about the applied sciences that join the world.
The coronaviruses that trigger extreme acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Center East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are genetically comparable. But we don’t have a treatment.
Science and expertise are driving our lives. We now have a digital world, too: a world the place lightning-fast communications put our lives on a freeway. We share information with ease. Buying and selling is spherical the clock, making the world a single market. That’s the energy of expertise.
The thirst for scientific information spurred us to discover the universe. Science gave us the expertise to make newer weapons of battle too. Drones and cruise missiles have changed navy methods and battlefields. Nuclear battle was a main risk.
The largest risk to people in trendy instances didn’t come using atomic weapons. It got here in the type of a germ: the new coronavirus. SARS-CoV2 spawned a pandemic, killing 1000’s. And it threatens to kill many extra.
A lot of the deaths have been in the developed world. International locations with wonderful healthcare amenities and extremely skilled medical professionals struggled to deal with the rising tide of infections. China, Italy, Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom: these are locations the place medical analysis thrives, bringing us newer therapies.
Some of these remedy strategies have been revolutionary. Most cancers and AIDS aren’t dying warrants anymore. Early detection helps treatment most cancers. Drugs has by no means been higher.
So why can’t we remove a virus: a microscopic organism that has sparked the greatest medical disaster in current historical past? It makes a mockery of our scientific developments.

Coronaviruses aren’t new to us. One of them provides people the widespread chilly. The coronaviruses that trigger extreme acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Center East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are genetically comparable. But we don’t have a treatment.
It’s troublesome to foretell a new illness or the arrival of a new pathogen. However the coronavirus has been studied throughout the time of SARS and MERS. There was a lot of analysis too. All of them had been discontinued when the threats pale.
Properly, that’s how Large Pharma works. Income matter the most. Analysis into therapies relies on profitability. If a drug or vaccine shouldn’t be more likely to fetch important revenues, why will personal pharmaceutical firms pour funds into analysis to develop it? These firms at all times prioritise vaccines and medicines that guarantee them earnings.
Persevering with the analysis even after the present pandemic ends will assist forestall future outbreaks, says Karla Satchell, professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern College’s Feinberg Faculty of Drugs in Chicago, Illinois.
Take into account the discontinued analysis into SARS and MERS. If that work had resulted in efficient medication, we’d have a remedy for COVID-19 at this time, Satchell says. The work on SARS-CoV-2 may very well be helpful in the occasion of future outbreaks, even when the pathogens inflicting them are barely completely different.
Pharmaceutical companies don’t see it that means. For them, there ought to be a return on investments. Personal firms fund a good majority of scientific trials as a result of they know they’re nearer to getting a drug into the market. A brand new drug in the market will increase their inventory.
International locations do fund analysis. It’s the taxpayers’ cash that helps develop remedies and medicines. However that’s not sufficient. Governments ought to be concerned in a a lot greater means. Extra money and higher amenities are required.
Have a look at our fashionable tradition. Who rakes in the large bucks? Actors, singers, footballers, fashions: celebrities all. Can they assist in a disaster like this? So we bought our priorities mistaken. Didn’t we?
How many of us know the way our scientists and researchers eke out a residing? Some are fortunate. Fortunate sufficient to be funded by large firms and foundations. However most of them spend their lifetime in college laboratories, closely depending on authorities grants to maintain their analysis alive. Their work must be sustained. Or else, we are going to see a repeat of COVID-19 pandemic.
Now we all know that a germ can convey the mighty world to its knees in 100 days. Let’s not give the microbes one other likelihood.

How the UAE rose to the virus problem
Ashley Hammond, UAE Editor
The UAE introduced its first case of coronavirus on January 29 when a 73-year-old girl entered the nation on vacation together with her household from Wuhan. The household of 4 together with a 38-year-old man, his 36-year-old spouse and their 10-year-old youngster arrived in the UAE on January 16 earlier than the grandmother got here down with flu-like signs on January 23.
In the 71 days to have adopted this quantity has risen to 2,659 instances, 239 recoveries and 12 deaths.
Alongside the means, some of the main developments had been on February 9 when the similar Chinese language grandmother Liu Yujia grew to become the first particular person in the UAE to get better.
Two Italian technicians visiting the nation to take part in the UAE Tour biking race examined constructive on February 28 ensuing not solely in the cancellation of the tour but in addition the lockdown of two lodges in Yas Marina the place media and biking individuals had been staying.
The UAE reported its first deaths on March 21: a 78-year-old Arab man who had travelled from Europe and a 59-year-old Asian man who was affected by power illnesses.
On March 23 the authorities ordered the closure of malls and eating places and suspended flights for a renewable interval of two weeks.
March 26 noticed the introduction of a sterilisation (disinfection) programme the place residents had been requested to remain indoors between 8pm and 6am. This was elevated to a 24-hour sterilisation programme from April 4.
Emirates restarted flights to 6 locations, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Brussels and Zurich, on April 6 and seven with 4 flights a week for London, and three for the different locations. All these flights are one-way nevertheless, with a suspension of visas, each on arrival and residency, enforced since March 19.

UAE takes motion to guard the economic system
Babu Das Augustine, Enterprise Editor
The UAE has been fast to provoke fiscal and financial insurance policies, extraordinary capital and liquidity help to the banking sector to climate the potential hostile affect of the coronavirus outbreak.
In February, Dubai introduced a Dh1.5 billion stimulus package deal, and that was adopted by a Dh100 billion package deal from the Central Financial institution of UAE to spice up liquidity in the banking system.
In current weeks the central financial institution has expanded its Focused Financial Help Scheme to Dh260 billion. That features Dh50 billion capital buffer aid, Dh50 billion zero-cost funding help to banks, Dh95 billion liquidity buffer aid, and Dh61 billion reduction-of-cash-reserves necessities.
For banks in the TESS programme, the central financial institution has prolonged the capital buffer aid (Dh50 billion in worth) until December subsequent 12 months. The banks and finance firms in the programme get zero-cost funding facility (Dh50 billion in worth) in opposition to collateral till December 31. Banks will even have the ability to use a third of their present regulatory liquidity buffers.
All elements of the programme are emergency measures are aimed toward serving to banks to supply aid to their particular person and enterprise prospects in phrases of rescheduling of mortgage repayments, waiver of charges and prices and in some instances restructuring of loans.
The regulatory aid measures resembling mortgage restructuring and deferrals will even assist banks to scale back the probabilities of a potential spike in non-performing loans (NPLs). This, in flip, will cut back the want for provisions in opposition to mortgage impairments and save banks from a sudden potential affect on profitability.
Financial coverage
The UAE and different GCC central banks generally monitor the US rates of interest as all besides Kuwait have their currencies pegged to the greenback. Though Kuwaiti dinar is pegged to a basket of currencies, the greenback dominates the foreign money basket with about 80 per cent weightage.
The UAE central financial institution in two tranches minimize lending charges final month following the Fed’s charge minimize lead. On March 4, the central financial institution of lowered rates of interest utilized to the issuance of its Certificates of Deposits (reverse repo) and repo charge (charge relevant to borrowing short-term liquidity from the central financial institution in opposition to Certificates of Deposits) additionally was decreased by 50 foundation factors. On March 16, the central financial institution trimmed its rate of interest on one-week certificates of deposit by 75 foundation factors.
Though the UAE doesn’t have a lot of financial coverage flexibility because of its foreign money’s peg to the greenback, the central financial institution was fast to chop charges to help the economic system in phrases of lowered funding prices for banks and companies.
Fiscal coverage measures
All the emirates have introduced help programmes in phrases of lowered authorities charges, fines, hire and lease reliefs to companies and people. Governments at each federal and particular person emirates-level have proven a dedication to help the economic system in these troublesome instances.
Proactive method retains UAE toll down
The UAE efforts to provoke steps swiftly to scale back the unfold of the coronavirus have helped maintain the casualties down. Whereas many developed nations like the US and the UK had been gradual to react to the virus, the UAE rolled out steps steadily with out spreading panic. Stimulus packages gave the economic system and the monetary system the a lot wanted help.
An early spring break to colleges was adopted by a number of different measures to encourage social distancing. Stimulus packages gave the economic system and the monetary system the a lot wanted help. Testing was ramped up and consciousness campaigns on hygiene had been launched.
The outcomes had been there to see. There are a number of instances daily, however the numbers are low. There was no large bounce. Which implies the UAE’s efforts to comprise the virus is working.
The medical fraternity in the nation deserves a large salute, so additionally the safety companies. The individuals in the nation — residents and residents — are in your debt.

Fundamental Quantum Analysis Will Rework Science and Trade
Tumblr media
The promise of quantum computing appears limitless--faster web looking, lightning-quick monetary knowledge evaluation, shorter commutes, higher climate prediction, more practical most cancers medication, revolutionary new supplies, and extra. However we're not there but. Specializing in slender benchmarks, corresponding to what number of quantum bits, or qubits, the most recent computer systems have (not many), creates a myopic snapshot of an enormous technical panorama. The objective goes past sooner computer systems to embody improvements unfold broadly throughout quantum data science, supplies, and applied sciences, corresponding to quantum sensors--a broad discipline certainly. Focusing narrowly on computing will not speed up the arrival of quantum supremacy--the tantalizing promise of a future when quantum computer systems surpass classical computer systems in computational duties of sensible significance. That can come solely from wide-spectrum analysis and growth spanning basic quantum mechanics, data science, supplies science, pc science, and pc engineering, amongst different fields. The most effective method places science first. Fixing primary science issues in quantum science throughout all its complexities will lay the muse for an array of future applied sciences and allow transformative scientific and industrial progress. And make no mistake, these applied sciences might be main drivers of scientific development, the economic system, and even nationwide safety. Some day. To say quantum computing is in its infancy is an overstatement. It is nonetheless within the womb. The sector is finding out primary questions concerning the architectures and applied sciences for creating and controlling qubits. Qubits are the basic processing items of quantum computer systems, and whatever the technique used to make them, they nonetheless do not preserve their "quantumness" lengthy sufficient to carry out duties a lot past proof-of-concept computations. The problem is constructed into the inherent weirdness of quantum physics itself, which has puzzled the world's most good minds for greater than 100 years. Fundamental questions on how particles behave within the subatomic realm--behavior that allows quantum computing--remain unanswered. The eventual solutions will fill in enormous clean spots in our understanding of probably the most basic workings of the universe. That is additionally what makes quantum science so thrilling. Missing solutions, scientists nonetheless debate what makes a quantum pc quantum. Are the circumstances of entanglement, superposition, and interference all required? Entanglement is touted as the important thing ingredient, however that has not been confirmed. It seems indispensable in some instances, however not in others. Entanglement happens when a number of particles can solely be described by a world, not a person, state. That is analogous to studying a e book the place the person pages make no sense, however the place data emerges when you're learn all of them. Regular computer systems wrestle mightily to characterize entanglement, which severely limits their capacity to simulate quantum programs, like pharmaceutical medication or superconducting supplies. That is one cause we'd like quantum computer systems. Superposition stems from the wave-particle duality of elemental particles within the quantum realm, corresponding to electrons, photons, ions, and atoms. Every is a wave perform of possibilities concerning its observable state, corresponding to place, spin, polarization (for a photon), or angular momentum. A particle, or qubit, can occupy many states directly. These states might be "read" very like studying a classical-computing bit as zero or 1, however a qubit has many extra potential values akin to the simultaneous possibilities of being zero or 1. That property hurries up computation. Decoherence, the nemesis of quantum computing, strikes when environmental components break down the quantum state. Loosely described as "noise," these components embody entanglement with the exterior atmosphere or warmth. Measuring the worth of a qubit additionally collapses the wave perform, and the qubit must be arrange once more, like urgent the "clear" button on a calculator. As a result of we nonetheless don't absolutely perceive how all this works, large-scale quantum computing will stay elusive as science delves deeper into the quantum world. Science is rooted in principle, which should then be noticed by experiment, which then refines principle and generates extra experiments. As outcomes solidify, sensible functions emerge in expertise. In quantum analysis, for instance, we have now already seen that state of affairs emerge within the case of the no-cloning theorem. Formulated by Wojciech Zurek, of Los Alamos Nationwide Laboratory, and William Wooters, previously of Williams Faculty, within the early 1980s the concept states that an unknown quantum state can't be precisely copied. Lately, Los Alamos has developed a quantum-key distribution gadget based mostly on this precept for creating hack-proof communications, a serious step ahead in cybersecurity. That's one instance of how primary science analysis finally spawns expertise. Zurek continues his theoretical work in quantum mechanics and is presently finding out the breakdown of quantum coherence of house time close to a black gap. Such pure-science work doesn't tackle a expertise problem, nevertheless it would possibly sometime make clear why decoherence cripples the particles making qubits in quantum computer systems. Nearer to residence, even in the present day's restricted quantum computer systems are an amazing place to check principle by simulating quantum physics, since they set up precisely the circumstances we want to examine. That functionality will advance physics in areas stalled by the boundaries of classical computing and assist reply basic physics questions. So, for instance, one undertaking at Los Alamos utilizing a cloud-based, publicly out there quantum pc seeks to look at how classical behavior--the dependable determinism we observe in our on a regular basis world--emerges from quantum possibilities. The quantum-classical transition stays one of many nice unsolved mysteries in science. It has direct bearing on why quantum computer systems lose coherence and the way we are able to create sturdy qubits that preserve coherence lengthy sufficient for prolonged calculations, paving the way in which for large-scale quantum computer systems. On one other entrance, analysis into quantum supplies is important to creating sturdy quantum computer systems and a constellation of different applied sciences. Throughout the board, the last word objective is to create explicit, controllable quantum states that we are able to manipulate. That requires isolating qubits from their atmosphere to forestall undesirable entanglement. The varied architectures being explored for quantum computing rely upon other ways of making qubits. Some computer systems use the states of super-cold trapped ions, whereas others use superconducting loops. New analysis is exploring qubits in defects, or voids, on the floor of solids, corresponding to diamond crystals or atomically skinny semiconductors. The work seeks to exactly place these defects the place they're wanted, providing a path towards controllable quantum states, sturdy qubits, and circuits of qubits in strong supplies at room temperature--a difficult however seemingly attainable objective. Different analysis exploits superposition to create quantum "atomtronic" (versus digital) sensors that exactly detect rotations, acceleration, electromagnetic fields, and the like. The following step is exploiting entanglement. Then a particle must hit just one atom of the detector to break down the superposition and--click! --record a measurement. Associated analysis has "painted" matter-wave guides that work like fiber-optic circuits however are far more delicate. They might be used to create an "atomtronic" gyroscope, which could sooner or later allow navigation unbiased of GPS programs. Whereas principle and primary analysis march ahead and tech giants press forward exploring the basic structure of quantum computer systems, the important thing to extracting their full potential might be algorithms, the set of directions that inform the pc what to do. They have to exploit the distinctive options of quantum computer systems with out succumbing to the inherent tiger traps of the quantum world. Whereas proof is extremely suggestive, we don't but know which lessons of algorithms could also be uniquely enabled by quantum computing. 'Take me to Cuba' - outlandish stories from the golden age of plane hijacking
In the last decade, 20 aircraft around the world have been hijacked. That figure still seems worryingly high in a post-9/11 world - how could an airline allow a stranger to wrestle control of a plane full of passengers? - but historically speaking the number is indicative of a comprehensive victory in the battle against crime in the skies.  Track back 50 years and hijackings were commonplace. In 1969 there were 86 in 12 months, according to statistics from the Aviation Safety Network; in 1970 there were 70. In five years, between 1968 and 1972, more than 130 aircraft were hijacked in the US alone, sometimes two on the same day. The startling regularity of seizures at 36,000 feet has led to the era being dubbed “the Golden Age of Hijacking”. So who was to blame? Broadly speaking, Cuba. So keen were some to share in the bounty of the Cuban Revolution of the Fifties that they were prepared to take over a plane and direct it south to the island some 90 miles of the Florida coast. “Take me to Cuba” soon entered satirical lexicon, with Monty Python among those to create a skit on the theme.  Coinciding with the advent of mass air travel, hijackings became common enough that airlines, and indeed passengers, greeted the act not with fear and concern but weariness and acceptance. The Golden Age | Plane hijackings from 1962-82 Time magazine in 1968 ran a piece titled “What to do when the hijacker comes”, revealing that in the past 11 months “more than 1,000 Americans have visited Cuba unexpectedly”. For travellers a planejacking meant a diversion to Havana and a lengthy delay, but not much else. For pilots, they had in their cockpit maps of the Caribbean and knew the routine off by heart.  Brendan I Koerner in his book The Skies Belong to Us: Love and Terror in the Golden Age of Hijacking dissects the phenomenon. “Most skyjackers earnestly believed that upon reaching Havana, their sole destination during the mid-to-late Sixties, they would be greeted as revolutionary heroes,” he wrote. “Every skyjacker was an optimist at heart, supremely confident that his story would be the one to touch Castro’s heart.” Before long the US government decided enough was enough and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was tasked with tackling the problem. Not least, because Fidel Castro was charging American airlines $7,500 a pop to retrieve their planes. Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba in 1959 Credit: getty The FAA was initially unsure on what could be done. At a senate hearing in 1968, the FAA’s Irving Ripp said hijackings were an “impossible problem short of searching ever passenger”. “If you’ve got a man aboard that wants to go to Havana, and he has got a gun, that’s all he needs,” he said.  The aviation administrator then turned to the populace, inviting ideas from the general public on how to halt the upward trend. Suggestions ranged from the sensible to the downright ridiculous: have all passengers wear boxing gloves so they cannot hold guns; install trapdoors outside the cockpit; play the Cuban national anthem before take off and arrest anyone who knows the words.  One standout piece of blue sky thinking, Koerner notes, was building a replica of Havana airport on the southern tip of Florida so that pilots could trick the hijacker into thinking they’ve landed in Cuba when really they were still on American soil. Another was the idea of free one-way flights to Cuba for anyone keen enough never to return to the US; Castro was not game and dismissed the ideas as “good riddance flights”. Air stewardesses with National Airline after a hijacking in 1969 Credit: getty Eventually, in 1973, the FAA created its first hijacker profile before introducing passenger screening, metal detectors and bag searches; the birth of airport security.  But not before the hijackings continued. “Starting in ‘69, you had hijackers demanding to go to other places,” Koerner explained to Vox.  “The first was Raffaele Minichiello, a Marine who demanded to be flown from Los Angeles to Rome. And the airline complied with his request. So you had hijackers saying, wait a minute, we don't have to just go to Cuba. We can go anywhere! You have people demanding to be taken to Algeria and North Korea and Sweden and Argentina, and other different locations on the map.” All the while airlines were compliant, which may have helped spur on the Seventies extortion hijackings. “Through the end of '71 and '72, hijackers were demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars, or sometimes gold bars — lots of material wealth in exchange for the passengers,” said Koerner. The incredible tale of DB Cooper and the most fascinating hijacking case in history One such man was DB Cooper - one of history’s most mysterious characters. In short, Cooper (which may or may not be his real name) in 1971 hijacked a Northwest Orient Airlines flight, demanded and was given $200,000, before parachuting out the back of the Boeing 727; he was never found and the FBI only recently gave up on the case.  As the Golden Age drew to an end, hijacking continued around the world, some politically motivated, some purely criminal, but with increasingly brazen demands and a preparation to use more and more lethal force. In between 1968 and 1971, despite scores of hijackings, there were only 21 related deaths. This number rose in the subsequent years, with 114 reported in 1977.  The growing death toll led authorities to take the threat more seriously; snipers were placed at airport tarmacs and plain-clothed officers boarded aircraft. Koerner says that the hijacking of a Southern Airlines flight in 1972 by three men who threatened to fly it into the atomic reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee helped wake the US government to the potential catastrophic consequences of the fad.  Security was still nothing compared to today - much introduced in the wake of September 11 - and hijackings continued. The Aviation Safety Network recorded dozens of seizures through the Seventies and Eighties - in 1993 there were 36 hijackings; 27 in 2000. Through the Noughties, as airport and aircraft security tightened exponentially (prior to 2001, for example, it was not uncommon for cockpit doors to be open or unlocked during flight), the number of instances plummeted. There were, however, in the 2000s, incidents involving Cuba, only this time hijackers taking control of planes on the island and demanding to be flown to the US.  Telegraph Travel Awards 2019: Win one of 15 luxury holidays worth £500,000 Hijackings today are now incredibly rare and make for major news: consider the coverage of EgyptAir Flight 181 in 2016, which was commandeered by an Egyptian man who was labelled not a terrorist but “an idiot”. In 2015 there was not a single hijacking around the world, for the first time since 1964. The feat was repeated in 2017.  From the comfort of a hijack-free airline industry it is easy to look back at the Golden Age of Hijacking as a peculiar, amusing blip in air travel, but it is also clear that the lessons learnt then have the made the sky the much safer place it is today.  Inspiration for your inbox Sign up to Telegraph Travel's new weekly newsletter for the latest features, advice, competitions, exclusive deals and comment.   You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
