Sylvia with Freida, in a post-Ted glow up. I'm reading a couple of books about her, and she called Ted's mistress Assia Wevill "that weavy bitch".

The bloody girl is beautiful, smart, but absolutely uncreative & cold. When I was at my lowest, thinking grimly: what has this Weavy Asshole (her name is actually Assia Wevill) got that I haven't, I thought: she can't make a baby, can't make a book or a poem, just ads about bad bakery bread, wants to die before she gets old & loses her beauty, and is bored. Bored, bored, bored. With herself & her life.
-Sylvia Plath

the thing about sylvia plath and ted hughes is like...she obviously struggled with major depression throughout her life and was probably more sensitive than most people but like....ted hughes did cheat on her and i would actually be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if plath were the only significant other of his to commit suicide......but like.......the fact that assia weville, the woman he cheated on plath with, ALSO killed herself (and their daughter!!!) in a VERY similar way several years later is...................suspicious to say the least imo..........

[…] she was alarmed by his voracious sexual appetite, his superstitions about marriage and his black moods.

yea i'll say it. i don't think you can call yourself a fan of slyvia plath's work if you also enjoy ted hughes' work. he abused her and cheated on her, leaving her with two young children and no money in the early 1960s which was a major factor as to why she killed herself.
and not only did he do all of that, but he destroyed so much of her work and her journals and any accounts of the abuse she suffered after she was gone AND he deeply edited her "ariel" manuscript to not reflect her final wishes. it wasn't until after he himself passed away that their daughter freida restored "ariel" to how sylvia wanted it to be presented.
and if that still isn't enough and you think that you can just "divorce the art from the artist", the woman that hughes cheated on sylvia with, assia wevill, ALSO killed herself due to his mistreatment years later.
he is not a good man and probably not even a decent poet and the next time you read any of sylvia's work remember that it might not have ever made it to the public eye or even survived after her death if it hadn't been for his outright greed and desperate control over the narrative of her life and suffering.

.
My younger self
There's this thing I want to tell
Do it, till you still have the strenght
Cause years will run so damn fast
And you'll be twenty-one, way too soon
Regretting every single day
That you didn't done it back then
You should know darkness always
Comes back to you, ober and over again
Becoming inseparable part of you
And you won't be ever okay
Just too weak to simply leave this earth
My younger self
You should've done it, you should've
But you didn't
And you hate this fact every single day
Cause there's nothing left for you now
Only the forbidden thought of Assia Wevill
And her little Shura
Remains in your broken sick mind
Everytime u look at your baby with tears in eyes
Knowing you would have to take her
To the place of ash living can came only once
When Death itself crave for the one last dance
My younger self
Do it, please, baby
When you still have the strenght
Cause the darkness will always comes back
For your soul, taking you by hand
just dressed little differently, with new colors
Do it, or you'll be alive for years
Alive, but fully dead inside
Knowing nothing had ever really changed
And while you're getting older
You are getting lonelier
And everyone simply stops care
My younger self,
I know you are scared
But do it and it will be easier
Than what would come for you instead
You'll lost everything
Even yourself in the end
Die young, when you have the chance
Cause no one will ever come
To save you
And there would be none to ever love you
Just little black cat
You would have to take with you, one day

Research updates: April-May 2023
Spring has been busy research-wise.I’ve shared in my blog a video recording of my presentation “This is what we were after, the hair colour of sea witch”: Aquatic Surfaces and Female Power in Assia Wevill’s ‘Lost Island’ advert (1965) that I presented at the annual Haunted Shores conference (7-8 April 2023). On 12-14 April 2023, I participated at the BAAS annual conference, on a panel on Sylvia…

I accuse
Ted Hughes
Of what the entire British and American
Literary and critical establishment
Have been at great lengths to deny
Without ever saying it in so many words, of course,
The murder of Sylvia Plath
Not that it isn't enough to condemn him,
Of mind-rape and body-rape, infidelity
Abduction and brainwashing of her,
Plagiarism, plagiarism of her imagery
Hiding of her most revealing indictments
Against her jailor,
Making a mint by becoming her posthumous editor,
And writing, himself incidentally,
Puerile, pretentious, dribbles of verse, with
Real blood on real hands.
And
If he's killed one wife
He's killed two!
The second, alas, committed suicide,
Or didn't you know?
Her name was Assia Wevill,
He never married her formally
Sylvia,
Found the oven's fumes less lethal
Than her husband's love
But then we women change our minds a lot, that's our prerogative,
But we might not, after all,
Free Frieda and Nicolas
Who then disarm him of that weapon with which he tortured us,
Stuff it into his mouth,
Point his lips around it, and blow out his brain,
Who knows?
In the meantime, Hughes, sue me
