Tfw this kickass emotional dirge of a song was made for the '92 Coppola Dracula movie but Annie Lennox actually didn't give two shits about Dracula and it's basically a covert tribute to Anne Rice and The Vampire Chronicles.

I'd always loved this song but relistening to it again today after years of forgetting about it I was like...wait. Because it suddenly felt very, very familiar and whoops apparently it was a collaborative effort on part of Annie Lennox and Anne Rice. Edgar Allan Poe

Known for his macabre tales of horror and terror, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most influential writers in American literature. His writings have influenced a number of genres, including Gothic novels, science fiction, and detective fiction.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His foster mother died when he was young. He had platonic entanglements with Sarah Anna Lewis and Annie Richmond. In 1827, Poe enrolled in the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant major. Afterward, Poe returned to New York City and began to publish poetry.

Stephen King

Despite his apparent lack of literary credentials, Stephen King has become one of the most successful and prolific writers of all time. He is the recipient of several awards, and his work has been featured in dozens of movies and television shows. He has written novels, short stories, and even comic books.

King is best known for his horror fiction. He began writing professionally while attending the University of Maine at Orono. He published a short story in 1967, and he sold his first novel in 1973. His first novel, Carrie, was about a telekinetic high school student who struggles to deal with her inner demons. The novel was eventually published by Doubleday & Co.

Joseph Campbell

During his career as a professor at Sarah Lawrence College, Joseph Campbell studied comparative religion. He was also fascinated by comparative mythology. He discovered that there are a number of mythological concepts that are shared across cultures and continents.

This led to the development of a mythological theory known as the hero's journey. It explains why myths and legends are important. It also gives a glimpse into Campbell's literary interests. His book The Village Killings and Other Novellas is a collection of five stories and an essay.

Dean Koontz

Besides writing novels, Dean Koontz has also written many short stories. His books have been translated into 38 languages. Often blending in themes of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and romance, Dean Koontz has become a bestselling author. He has written more than 100 books and sold over 500 million copies worldwide.

Dean Koontz started writing in college. During this time he worked multiple jobs. Eventually, he was given five years to write by his wife. She subsequently quit her job to help with his writing career. The result was his first novel, Whispers.

Dean Barker

Among the many horror authors, Clive Barker is considered one of the best. His works are dark, imaginative, and chilling. He is also a celebrated illustrator and painter. His work has been exhibited and sold throughout America.

Clive Barker began his career writing plays, such as "Crazyface", "Frankenstein in Love", and "The History of the Devil." He also wrote short fiction. He also illustrated, painted, and created a variety of ephemera. His work has been adapted into numerous films. The director's cut edition of Nightbreed will be released in late 2012. He also worked as a painter, illustrator, and film director.

Anne Rice

Known for her vampire novels, Anne Rice is one of the most acclaimed and influential horror writers of the past decade. She also pioneered the use of female sexuality in the supernatural genre.

She is most widely known for her bestselling Vampire Chronicles series. This series of books spanned over twelve novels and is often credited with reviving the gothic horror genre. It started with her debut novel, Interview with the Vampire, and has since expanded into several other sub-series.

She also wrote a number of other genres, including erotic fiction and historical fiction. She was awarded the World Horror Grandmaster Award in 1994, and in 2003, she was named Lifetime Achievement by the Horror Writers Association. She also received the Bram Stoker Award for Life Achievement in 2004.

Victor LaValle

Whether you enjoy horror or sci-fi, you'll find Victor LaValle's novels a unique experience. This New York City-based writer has been writing genre fiction since the early 2000s. His novels have been included in numerous best-of-the-year lists. He was also awarded the Whiting Writers' Award and the Guggenheim Fellowship.

LaValle has also written short stories and a comic book. His novels explore the effects of mental illness on characters. They often feature tensions between class, gender, and race. He's also interested in fantastical tropes involving working class characters.

Entrevista con el Vampiro (comparación entre la película y el libro)

Una vez terminado de haber leído entrevista con el Vampiro me dispuse a ver la película, aunque ya la había visto hace años no recordaba muchas cosas, en este blog quiero poner las diferencias que vi en la película y el libro.

Sin más que decir comencemos.

- La primera diferencia sale desde el comienzo, con la familia de Louis, en la película dice que él se quedó viudo cuando su esposa murió en el parto, sin embargo en el libro él no está casado ni viudo, Louis es el mayor de dos hermanos un hombre y una mujer,  y el motivo de su tristeza es que discutió con su hermano y este se murió enojado con él.

-  La escena donde Lestat lo convierte en vampiro, en la película  lo ve en una cantina, lo ataca cuando Louis sale de ella en compañía de una prostituta, Lestat lo muerde haciéndolo que flote sobre el mar para finalmente dejarlo caer, en el libro no da tantos detalles, solo dice que fue una noche donde Louis salió de copas y Lestat lo ataco de repente.

- En la película no dicen que Lestat tanga un padre ciego que ignora que es vampiro.

- En la película Louis siente cierto cariño o atracción hacia una de sus esclavas, en el libro él estaba enamorada de una de las hermanas de un chico español al cual Lestat mato,  esta chica seria la que ayudaría a Louis y Lestat a esconderse en su bodega.

- Louis cuenta en la película que a Lestat le gustaba cazar a sus presas en bailes o reuniones de sociedad, y que sus favoritas eran las mujeres, en el  libro dice Louis que las presas favoritas de Lestat eran niños o jóvenes varones ya que él lo tomaba como un tipo de venganza inconsciente.

- La escena del baile y los perro fue relleno o bien tal vez la usaron para explicar que Louis no tomaba sangre humana, en el libro simplemente no existe.

- Claudia en la película parece que tiene alrededor de 10 años, en cuanto el libro esta tenía 4 o 5 años.

- Hacen mucho énfasis en la película que Claudia quiere un cuerpo adulto, en el libro no le dieron tanta importancia, en realidad quería a Madeline como compañía.

- Claudia se corta el pelo en la película y le crece, esto no paso en el libro ella se arranca mechones de cabello pero no se lo corta.

-  En la película no hablan que Lestat tuvo una amistad con un músico el cual quería convertir en vampiro.

- Los infantes que Claudia le lleva a Lestat en la película los dos son niños, en el libro son un niño rubio y una niña morena, Lestat escoge el rubio y la escena es más subida de tono.

-La escena donde Lestat regresa después de que Claudia y Louis lo tiran en el pantano, Lestat se presenta solo, pero en el libro lo hace con ayuda de su amigo el músico convertido en vampiro.

- Cuando están el teatro Armand le ofrece a su esclavo mortal a Louis este le muerde la muñeca, en el libro el esclavo tiene una erección cuando  lo muerde provocando que  Louis se dé cuenta.

-  Armad en el libro dicen que el esclavo está muerto, pero en la película sigue vivo.

-  A Madeline en la película la matan enseguida que se convierte en vampiro, en el libro ella convive mucho con Claudia hasta el punto en el que Louis le dan un poco de celos por su cercanía.

- Cuando atrapan a Claudia y Louis, Lestat esta con el aquelarre de vampiros, en la película no aparece.

- En el tercer rencuentro que tiene Louis con Lestat en los años 80s, Lestat tiene la compañía de otro vampiro, en la película este no aparece.

- En el libro Lestat le tiene miedo a una sirena, en la película era la luz de un helicóptero.

- Al final de la película aparece Lestat en el carro del entrevistador, esto no pasa en el libro el entrevistador solo anota la dirección donde Louis vio a Lestat y lo va a buscar.

Comentarios:

Creo a pesar de todas sus diferencias con el libro, la película es disfrutable, supongo que por el tiempo no detallaron barias cosas y omitieron otras, como el caso de la esposa de Louis y muerte de su hija, para dar hincapié en adoptar a Claudia o el caso del baile donde se lleva a una mujer mayor para intentar chuparle la sangre, para dar a entender que prefería tomar sangre de animales.

the raven cycle series by maggie stiefvator (what can i say?? greatest of all time, adam parrish made me who i am, they all did really, it’s that simple)

circe by madeline miller (like jane eyre or little women, it’s a bildungsroman about a woman’s life. partially an odyssey retelling. she’s iconic and there’s magic!!)

the queen’s gambit by walter tevis (another female led bildungsroman. i clearly have a type. but beware for it is written by a man. i think he does pretty well tho. and pair with the 2020 miniseries it’s sooo excellent)

i will forever be irritated that we didn’t get the gay version of the Interview with the Vampire movie adaption. 

Cause the book? Gay as fucking hell. Queer to the extreme. More homo than any Latin classification could properly convey. Like the subtext was so blatantly text that my straight classmate in 8th grade could pick up on it when he did a book report and look positively sheepish as he tried to explain the book to my backwater Midwestern class. 

(for the record Vampire Lestat was EVEN MORE QUEER with like three metaphorical gay sex scenes, and A Cry to Heaven, the historical novel about Italian castratos in the 1800s has like four explicit gay sex scenes but whatever Anne who’s counting)

The movie unfortunately came out 18 years after the book, and old Anny Rice was full blown no homo-ing the fuck out of it, and even then the movie is still pretty queer all things considered. but fuck I want a new movie, without Anne Rice touching it. with all the blatantly gay scenes put back in and all good erotic tension dialed way the fuck back up.

What other fandoms are you familiar enough with to use as an AU prompt? Pokemon Trainer AU? Homestuck AU (they'd still probably die but at least there are lots of ways to come back to life)?

I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU.  I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games.  I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas.  (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it.  As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.)  There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.

Disclaimer 3: I am not looking for recommendations.  My Goodreads “To Read” list is already a good 700 items long, and people telling me “if you like X, then you’ll love Y!” genuinely stresses me the fuck out.

Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list.  I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic.  On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

New on Netflix: January 2022 Releases

Netflix is ringing in the new year in atypical fashion. Throughout 2021, the streaming giant’s original offerings swelled while its library titles shrunk. With its list of new releases for January 2022, however, Netflix is expanding its non-original market quite a bit.

Jan. 1 sees the arrival of a truly stunning amount of impressive non-Netflix movies and TV shows. The big titles available on the first of the month include: 300, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Superman Returns, Terminator 2, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and much more. Later on in the month, Netflix is also set to add Phantom Thread (Jan. 16) to its roster.

Though Netflix is lighter on original content in January 2022, there is still plenty of intriguing titles to check out. Horror series Archive 81 premieres on Jan. 14 and should exploit the eeriness of old VHS tapes. The Kristen Bell starring true crime satire The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window arrives on Jan. 28. Then, of course, Ozark begins its fourth and final season on Jan. 21.

The movie slate looks quite bleak but Kevin James-starring Sean Payton movie Home Team might be worth a watch…even if it’s a hate watch.

In occasione della triste notizia della morte della’autrice ANNE RICE, vi ripropongo il post che le avevo dedicato tempo fa.

Scrivere questo post è stato difficile, infatti cercare di riassumere coincisamente ma esaustivamente le opere di questa acclamata scrittrice, non è semplice. Anne Rice, è la regina delle tenebre, madre di tutti i vampiri, dama nera della letteratura mondiale, e ha aperto una nuova epoca letteraria con i suoi libri, in anni incui la letteratura, aveva abbandonato il romanzo gotico, lei ha creato un genere che mescolasse gotico e horror e romanzo storico. Senza di lei, non esisterebbe nessuna Laurell K. Hamilton, nessuna Stephenie Meyer, e nemmeno tante altre scrittrici vampiriche. Lei ha riportato in auge i vampiri, lei li ha fatti rinascere e moltiplicare sia nei libri che al cinema.

Ogni volta che leggete un libro con protagonista dei vampiri, ogni volta che vedete un film con vampiri, sappiate che che è grazie ad Anne Rice se potete farlo. E Ogni volta che i signori Tom Cruise e Brad Pitt leggono il resoconto del loro conto in banca, dovrebbero anche loro ringraziare Anne Rice, che ha contribuito non poco alla loro popolarità.

Cosa sarebbe il genere paranormal romance e urban fantasy senza Anne Rice? Niente, poichè non esisterebbero.

Questo significa che i libri di Anne Rice sono privi di difetti? No, e il mondo è pieno di persone che non apprezzano il suo stile, ma anche loro sono costretti a riconoscere la realtà: lei ha aperto una nuova epoca nella letteratura. Credete sia un caso se quasi tutti i libri americani di vampiri sono ambientati in Louisiana? Niente affatto, è semplicemente in onore della Rice.

Finita questa premessa, bisogna sicuramente parlare un pò della vita di Anne Rice prima di passare alle sue opere. Infatti, questa signora, oggi, matura, ha avuto una vita difficile, ma superati molti dolori, è riuscita ad andare avanti e oggi….vive letteralmente le storie che scrive.

Anne Rice nasce il 4 Ottobre 1941, a New Orleans, Louisiana. Il nome Anne lo ha scelto quando era piccola. Nel 1961 sposa Stan Rice , che le ispira la creazione del suo personaggio più famoso, il vampiro Lestat. Nel 1966 ha una figlia, Michele, che muore di leucemia a 5 anni. Nel 1973 inzia a scrivere il suo primo romanzo, Intervista col Vampiro. Nel 1978 nasce il figlio Christopher. Dopo aver vissuto in Texas e San. Francisco, la famiglia si trasferisce a New Orlanes e acquista la Garden District Greek Revival house che sarebbe diventata il set di molti romanzi di Anne. Stan Rice muore nel 2002 di cancro. Nel 2005, Anna lascia  New Orleans per andare a vivere in California, vicino a suo figlio. Dopo pochi mesi dalla sua partenza l'uragano Katrina devasta la città. Ora Anne scrive opere prevalentemente religiose. La sue serie di libri più famosa è  The Vampire Chronicles series, i cui temi centrali sono l'amore, la morte, l'immortalità, l'esistenzialismo e la condizione umana. I suoi libri hanno venduto quasi 100 milioni di copie, e ciò l'ha resa una delle scrittrici più lette della storia contemporanea.

Con questo libro lo stile di Anne Rice prende una svolta più religiosa e metafisica. Cosa è il bene e cosa è il male, questi interrogativi sempre presenti nella serie, si fanno più pressanti. E soprattutto possiamo veramente scegliere o siamo nelle mani di qualcuno che gioca con le nostre vite?

Trama: La storia inizia dove si conclude il romanzo precedente della serie, Il vampiro di Blackwood. La voce narrante è quella del vampiro Lestat - vecchio di duecento anni, ma con l'aspetto seducente di un bellissimo ventenne ossessionato dal desiderio di diventare un santo della Chiesa cattolica. Lestat vive nella sontuosa residenza di Blackwood, a New Orleans, insieme al giovane e bellissimo Quinn, da lui iniziato alla “fraternità del sangue”. Quando a Blackwood giunge, all'improvviso, una splendida mortale, dotata di poteri straordinari, ma allo stremo delle forze, Quinn se ne innamora e Lestat, per salvarla, succhia il suo sangue, trasformandola in vampiro. Sulle tracce della ragazza arriva alla villa anche la sorella Rowan, famosa scienziata, per la quale Lestat prova immediatamente un inedito e violento sentimento d'amore e d'attrazione, anche se rifiuta di scambiare con lei il patto di sangue. Ma le due sorelle nascondono un segreto terribile: entrambe hanno partorito dei Taltos, esseri superiori dotati di poteri straordinari, che sono stati portati via subito dopo la nascita.

La mia opinione: Leggere questo libro per me è stato difficile poichè sapevo sarebbe stato l'ultimo di una serie che io ho molto amato, così come ho amato il suo protagonista Lestat, uno dei personaggi letterari più complessi che io abbia mai conosciuto: coraggioso fino all'estremo, esaltato, fantasioso, umano, pio, crudele, irresponsabile, egoista…..Racchiude in sè tutti i pregi ed i difeti del genere umano, è insomma un personaggio semplicemente grandioso. Mi mancherà. Ma passiamo a fare la recensione di questo libro. Ciò che mi è rimasto dentro dopo questa lettura è prima di tutto una certezza: la Rice è la regina indiscussa del genere vampiri. Non si è fossilizzata, nè si è semplificata o ripetuta, no si è sempre più evoluta, come se dal basso libro dopo libro abbia salito una lunga scala fino al paradiso. E naturalmente Lestat, bè, lui è un personaggiò così potente, da farmi pensare che per la scrittrice controllarlo non deve essere stato per nulla semplice. Il Lestat crudele, spensierato, egoista dei primi libri, è cresciuto ed ha errato fino a cambiare ad imparare, ma è poi possibile cambiare veramente? Questa è la domanda che ogni uomo o donna si pone prima o poi durante la vita. Cresciamo, cambiamo, ma in fondo, dentro di noi, qualcosa resta sempre uguale, e Lestat, vampiro destinato a non invecchiare mai, è in certo senso fossilizzato nonostante cerchi con tutte le forze di cambiare, quante volte ripete che vuole diventare buono, e fare del bene? Ma cosa è bene e cosa è male? Chi lo decide? Non è forse tutto soggetivo? Eppure mi aspettavo un finale diverso. Sono banale vero? Non so, volevo che Lest raggiungesse un obbiettivo concreto dopotutto ciò che aveva passato. Alla fine la sua risposta, il suo grande gesto di bontà e santità è una rinuncia. Rinuncia alla donna che ama, rinuncia a trasformarla in vampiro perchè in lei ama l'umanità e perchè è meglio per lei restare umana. Ma se di Non è tutto questo un pò ipocrita? Basta una rinuncia per quanto enorme per renderlo buono, quando poi bontà e santità, come possono essere quantificate? Essere altruisti significa essere buoni? E Lestat in fondo rinuncia per chè vuole essere buono, ha un fine in mente, un fine personale che riguarda lui stessoi, non è in fondo una forma di egoismo? E scegliere di non fare ciò che Rowan vuole non è anche quella un forma di egoismo? Lestat in fondo è veramente cambiato o è solo superficie? Ma poi è possibile cambiare? Forse se avesse trasformato Rowan per poi farsi prosciugare da lei…..se avesse scelto di morire di sacrificarsi, forse quello l'avrebbe reso un santo? Ma sarebbe stato un finale prevedibile in fondo, e Anne Rice non è mai prevedibile. Per concludere, il libro mi è piaciuto, come avrebbe potuto essere diversamente? Ma mi ha anche rattristato dover salutare questa saga, e mi h lasciato un pò l'amaro in bocca perchè io spero sempre nel lieto fine.

Qui finisce sotto la tutela di Guido, un ragazzo figlio di contadini che è stato venduto per lo stesso motivo, ma che purtroppo ha perso la voce bianca perdendo così la possibilità di cantare, rovinandogli l'esistenza, che però ricompone diventando un insegnante inflessibile e bravo, nonchè un eccellente compositore.

-Exit to Eden

Trama: Lisa, fondatrice di un esclusivo resort dedicato alle fantasie sessuali chiamato The Club, perde ogni autocontrollo quando si innamora di Elliot, un giornalista che è stato assunto come schiavo per il resort.

Hii, Koo! Just trying to help, Annie Rice wrote the book ' Interview with the Vampire' that inspired the movie with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. It's a really old movie so maybe you haven't seen it. It also has a 11 year old Kirsten Dunst. ~ also I got Stephen King from that website and I didn't even send anything remotely scary so m'not sure I trust the result :P
