Short biography
Morricone composed over 400 scores for cinema and television, as well as over 100 classical works. He started as a talented football player for A.S. Roma but left the sport to follow his passion for music.
His score to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is considered one of the most influential soundtracks in history and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
His filmography includes over 70 award-winning films, all Sergio Leone‘s films since A Fistful of Dollars, all Giuseppe Tornatore‘s films since Cinema Paradiso, The Battle of Algiers, Dario Argento‘s Animal Trilogy, 1900, Exorcist II, Days of Heaven, several major films in French cinema, in particular the comedy trilogy La Cage aux Folles I, II, III and Le Professionnel, as well as The Thing, The Mission, The Untouchables, Mission to Mars, Bugsy, Disclosure, In the Line of Fire, Bulworth, Ripley’s Game and The Hateful Eight.
After playing the trumpet in jazz bands in the 1940s, he became a studio arranger for RCA Victor and in 1955 started ghost writing for film and theatre. Throughout his career, he composed music for artists such as Paul Anka, Mina, Milva, Zucchero and Andrea Bocelli.
From 1960 to 1975, Morricone gained international fame for composing music for Westerns and—with an estimated 10 million copies sold—Once Upon a Time in the West is one of the best-selling scores worldwide.
From 1966 to 1980, he was a main member of Il Gruppo, one of the first experimental composers collectives, and in 1969 he co-founded Forum Music Village, a prestigious recording studio. From the 1970s, Morricone excelled in Hollywood, composing for prolific American directors such as Don Siegel, Mike Nichols, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone, Warren Beatty, John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino.
In 1977, Morricone composed the official theme for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. He continued to compose music for European productions, such as Marco Polo, La piovra, Nostromo, Fateless, Karol and En mai, fais ce qu’il te plait. Morricone’s music has been reused in television series, including The Simpsons and The Sopranos, and in many films, including Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.
He also scored seven Westerns for Sergio Corbucci, Duccio Tessari‘s Ringo duology and Sergio Sollima‘s The Big Gundown and Face to Face.
Morricone worked extensively for other film genres with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Mauro Bolognini, Giuliano Montaldo, Roland Joffé, Roman Polanski and Henri Verneuil. His acclaimed soundtrack for The Mission (1986) was certified gold in the United States. The album Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone stayed 105 weeks on the Billboard Top Classical Albums.
In 2007, he received the Academy Honorary Award “for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music.”
He has been nominated for a further six Oscars. In 2016, Morricone received his first competitive Academy Award for his score to Quentin Tarantino’s film The Hateful Eight, at the time becoming the oldest person ever to win a competitive Oscar.
His other achievements include three Grammy Awards, three Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, ten David di Donatello, eleven Nastro d’Argento, two European Film Awards, the Golden Lion Honorary Award and the Polar Music Prize in 2010. Morricone has influenced many artists from film scoring to other styles and genres, including Hans Zimmer,Danger Mouse, Dire Straits, Muse, Metallica, and Radiohead.

Fire ~ What did you get into trouble for at school?
How do you know that I got in trouble at school? Well, in the last school where I was (a private one), I was not far from a role-model student, despite my long hair and leather jackets (that was before I became a vegan, it should be noted). However, that's because I liked that school - when I don't like a place, things can get quite tricky.
I am not sure if I really got into trouble in my previous school (a public one), but I used to miss many classes - and drink a lot more than a 15 year old should. In the school before that (another private one), I was really tired of all strict regulations and, one day, I jumped the wall and run away - but I was caught and ended up spending a Saturday morning at school (yes, the infamous breakfast club that inspired the 1980's movie).
Violin ~ Your favourite study music?
There are three major options when it comes to study music.
1 - Soundtracks. More specifically, the soundtrack of Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (written by Ennio Morricone and his son). It was thanks to this masterpiece that I finished my Master's thesis, even if depression and a broken heart made me cry all the time. Among the ones I have to thank for getting my master's is, certainly, Mr. Ennio Morricone and his son Andrea.
2 - Ellend. Yes, Dark Ambient/Neoclassical Darkwave - a very underground musical genre. Once, I listened to "The Wake of the Angel" all night in loop. By the dawn, I had finished an entire Art History paper about the Köln Cathedral - it was the only time in my entire life that I delivered a paper before the schedule.
3 - Progressive Rock/Metal. Probably, bands like Dream Theater (specially one album: The Astonishing), Liquid Tension Experiment, ELO (I recommend Time), Blue Mammoth, Magic Pie, Haken, Emerson, Lake & Palmer… and any band in this genre(s) that you like. For example, I am not sure if Pink Floyd is good for studying, but, maybe, it works for you.
Philippe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio in Cinema Paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988)
Cast: Philippe Noiret, Salvatore Cascio, Marco Leonardi, Jacques Perrin, Agnese Nano, Antonella Atti, Enzo Cannavale, Isa Danieli, Leopoldo Trieste, Roberta Lena, Nino Terzo, Leo Gullotta, Tano Cimarosa, Nicola Di Pinto. Screenplay: Giuseppe Tornatore, Vanna Paoli. Cinematography: Blasco Giurato. Production design: Andrea Crisanti. Film editing: Mario Morra. Music: Ennio Morricone.
Will today's kids feel sentimental about the multiplexes in which they see movies, the way I feel about the small-town theaters where I grew up, the places where I learned to love movies? I have my own lost cinema paradises, so I should be the right audience for Cinema Paradiso, with its tribute to a bygone era of moviegoing. Tornatore's movie has some good things going on, including the performance of Philippe Noiret as Alfredo, and the wonderful rapport between Noiret and young Salvatore Cascio as Toto. Leopoldo Trieste's performance as the censorious Father Adelfio is also a delight, and ending the film with Alfredo's assemblage of the kissing scenes the priest made him excise is a masterly bit. But once Toto grows up to be the lovestruck teenager Salvatore (Marco Leonardi), I begin to lose interest, as Tornatore's screenplay lards on more and more sentimentality. I've seen the 155-minute version twice now, though I have yet to see the 173-minute "director's cut" of the film, in which, I am told, the grownup Salvatore (Jacques Perrin) is reunited with his teen love Elena (Agnese Nano), now grown up and played by Brigitte Fossey. Frankly, I don't much want to: The 155-minute version seems overlong as it is. Cinema Paradiso is beloved by many, and often makes lists of people's favorite foreign-language films, but I find it thin and conventional.
Andrea Belfi - Eternally Frozen - more low winds (see Jessica Pipe Sextet) but in this case they’re brass rather than reed instruments
Eternally Frozen consists of a series of canon based compositions for brass ensemble, percussion and synthesizer by Andrea Belfi. The canon is an ancient compositional technique in which an initial melody is imitated at a specified time interval by one or more parts, creating illusionary never-ending musical journeys.
The work is inspired by the evocative image of the Deprong Mori, a mythological bat with the alleged ability to fly through solid matter by bending atoms by it’s natural skill of audio echolocation. The myth suggests that one of these bats had been “eternally frozen” in a wall of solid lead in 1952 by the researcher of the Rockefeller University, Donald R. Griffith. This story is exhibited in a display at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, an institution renowned for both speculative, fantastical reinforcement of mythology and playful and beguiling distortions of mysterious could-be truths.
Both the canon and the “frozen” Deprong Mori are man-made illusory simulations of eternity. Their attempt is to create mirages, where the insinuation of facts is more meaningful than the reality.
After many years of sonic explorations with percussion, drums, and electronics, Belfi is here projecting himself as a composer through the direction of an astonishing brass ensemble in the realization of these canonic works. There are evident echoes of the works of Arthur Russell, Miles Davis, Moondog, William Basinski, and the Italian soundtrack tradition of Ennio Morricone and Egisto Macchi.
Robin Hayward - Tuba
Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø - Trombone
Elena Kakailogu - French Horn

Elisabetta Porcinai: cover art and design
Sending The Rasmus is the most finnish thing Finland could possibly do - after getting fantastic results last year with an imitation of 2002 rock music, now they're sending the real thing. I love how dedicated Finland is to rock music, this song slaps, and I really hope they get good results.
8/10
2: Israel: Michael Ben David - I.M
He's the gayest man in Tel Aviv and I love him for it. The lyrics are just a mishmash of Rupaul's drag race catchphrases, except for that one line about middle east sex appeal, that one's new. I know this isn't strong enough for the competition but I think it's so much fun.
6/10
3: Serbia: Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano
I have to be honest, at first, I really disliked the Meghan Markle namedrop at the very beginning of the song. Sure, it grabs your attention, but the reference feels instantly dated, in a way that works against the rest of the song, which feels timeless yet undeniably modern. Despite this one problem, I have come to really love this song, it's truly unique, both in sound and lyrical content. Konstrakta comes across as less of a singer and more as a genius performance artist.
8/10
4: Azerbaijan: Nadir Rustamli - Fade To Black
It's Azerbaijan going back to their usual schtick - A competent song sung by a competent singer, with competent staging, there's probably a couple of competent Swedish songwriters in there somewhere. It's fine, I don't hate it but it's so hard to get excited about it. It goes into one ear and out of the other. Cute staging though.
5/10
5: Georgia: Circus Mircus - Lock Me In
I love it when Georgia gets weird. I heard a rumor that they are going to have an actual puppet show on stage, and if that's true, I'm going to lose my mind, this entire band is a weird acid trip. Also, I'm really glad to see Nika Kocharov in Eurovision again, he represented Georgia in 2016 with, Midnight Gold, which is probably the most underrated Eurovision song in recent memory as well as one of my personal favorites.
8/10
6: Malta: Emma Muscat - I Am What I Am
Who is this for? No, really, who is going to feel inspired by this? It sounds like pop music for really religious kids who aren't allowed to listen to real pop music.
2/10
7: San Marino: Achille Lauro - Stripper
There's a gay Italian cowboy stripper riding a mechanical bull surrounded by nuclear grade pyrotechnic explosions, who cares about the song? Jokes aside, this song was in my top 10 even before I saw the staging - It's a fun rock song that doesn't take itself too seriously, and sometimes that's all you need.
10/10
8: Australia: Sheldon Riley - Not the Same
I'm not a big fan of self-empowerment songs that sound sad and tragic, and I can't find a single positive emotion in this song, it's all misery and desperation. His voice is incredible, his stage costume is absolutely beautiful, but I don't know how I'm supposed to feel listening to the song. I should probably be moved to tears, but I have no idea if it's supposed to be happy or sad tears, so it ends up being neither.
5/10
9: Cyprus: Andromache - Ela
The Greek language is so beautiful to me - I have really missed hearing it in Eurovision over the past few years. The song sounds the way being on a Mediterranean island vacation feels.
7/10
10: Ireland: Brooke Scullion - That's Rich
It's like if Michelle from Derry Girls tried to be a popstar, so that's fun. It's pretty ironic that a song called "That's rich" sounds so cheap.
6/10
11: North Macedonia: Andrea - Circles
This song is just nothing. It goes on and on and on for what feels like three hours, and absolutely nothing happens.
2/10
12: Estonia: Stefan - Hope
It's Avicii's cowboy era with some added Morricone inspiration - the production sounds flawless. I can't understand a word he's saying though, I think he's slurring his words to sound more like a cowboy.
Also, I'm sad that we won't get to see the intended staging for this - the desert landscape would have been exactly what this song needed, but I guess we're getting a black hole instead.
7/10
13: Romania: WRS - Llámame
It feels like something from Eurovision 2009, even though the song is pretty modern. I really like it, it's pure eurovision camp, but it's a little bit mediocre.
6/10
14: Poland: Ochman - River
He has the best vocals of the year, hands down. They have definitely taken some inspiration from Gjon's Tears - I get it, he won last year's jury vote so it's probably a smart move. It's really modern and beautifully produced, but the songwriting is just good, not great. His vocals are making the song sound a lot bigger than it actually is.
8/10
15: Montenegro: Vladana - Breathe
I wish it wasn't in English, because I wish I could unhear these lyrics. It tries so hard to be important and dramatic, but it just falls flat.
2/10
16: Belgium: Jérémie Makiese - Miss You
I like how we're getting this one song that feels like American rnb - there is room for that in Eurovision! With that said, it's pretty forgettable, and I'm worried about his live vocals.
5/10
17: Sweden: Cornelia Jakobs - Hold Me Closer
I think this is Sweden's best song since Euphoria, and it's the most genuinely emotional song Sweden has sent in my lifetime. There's zero artifice, but it's still an expertly written pop song. I love the perfectly imperfect vocals, they're not for everyone, but it feels great to get something potentially polarizing from Sweden, just this one time. It's the authentic Swedish indie pop that fans have been asking for for years, and it deserves all the hype it gets. It's the right song at the right time, pun intended.
10/10
18: Czech Republic: We Are Domi - Lights Off
This song is doing everything right - the production is great, the staging is exciting, the song is catchy - but I keep forgetting that it exists. I can remember how it goes, but I can't remember that it's in the competition. I like it, don't get me wrong, but I can't call it a favorite.

- O.C. – Isaia Mori (2023) – tonalità Do

SOBRE GENE BACK

- l'episodio "Il cane blu" è stato girato a Mondaino, dove vive e lavora il personaggio interpretato da Noiret, Saludecio per le scene all'interno della chiesa e Morciano di Romagna per le scene dei porticati;
- l'episodio "La domenica specialmente" è stato girato a Longiano;
