HERE'S SOME STUFF TO KNOW ABOUT MEEEEE!
(this will be updated over time)
HELLO THERE!
My name is undisclosed, but you can call me whatever you would like. If you lack ideas, common names I use to refer to myself are Moth and Frog!
I am 16 years old (YES. I AM. A MINOR. If you're creepy, I will crawl through this stupid phone and steal your spleen :3)
My pronouns are She/They, but if you want to use others for me, I welcome them with open arms. Kudos for creativity if you call me any others!
Oh, I'm also Bri'ish.
So what else should you know about me?
I love anything, and I mean ANYTHING, Legend Of Zelda related. My favourite games are Spirit Tracks, Link's Awakening, and Skyward Sword, though. Do with that information what you will.
I'm also currently a massive fan of Chonny Jash and his CCCC album (HMS, my beloved. Actually, specially Soul my beloved but the other two are cool too) Soul Eclectic is my favourite of his songs- there's probably a Zelda related reason for that- but Time Machine Reprise, 20XX and surprisingly Mucka Blucka???? are also up there.
AAAND. ALSO I like Greek mythology!
Specifically, I love the works of Homer (the Odyssey and The Iliad). Onwards from that, I love Epic: The Musical by Jorge Rivera-Herrans, which is based on the Odyssey. It's an amazing work in progress, which you should all check out.
I have also just started watching the Percy Jackson Tv Series, which is so good. I've wanted to read the books for a while, but I've never had the chance, so it's great to be able to watch this adaptation.
Other things I like are Professor Layton, Cookie Run Kingdom, Good Omens, and The Owl House.
...reluctantly I feel I must confess I'm a fan of overwatch as well. I'm so sorry moots for any overwatch posting or reblogging that may appear on your dash.
Frogs and dinosaurs are cool, too.
I also like drawing!
Like I said, this is likely to change over time, but I felt I needed to share something about myself. It's about time, after all.

This is about to be such an incredibly niche poll but
I'm not adding any variety, I just basically want to see if there's more overlap than I thought there is

brief overview of my post UF/LF comic idea. thing. if people were interested. sorry if this is hard to follow i have disorders !!!
basically. i wanted to give extra character development to flora (and clive!) (i really like clive! sorry! you cant. you cant avoid him. i made this blog ABOUT HIM.) because as many people are aware. floras writing. is Bad.
i thought i could probably fix this by having flora and clive butting heads for an entire investigation (with flora actually pretty mad at him and clive feeling guilty but unwilling to drop his shitty guy facade) and also in general giving flora a spotlight! luke is in america but he sends letters to the professor and flora (and clive. i guess.), and he also gives them a phone call from time to time now that layton finally got a god damn phone in his office.
"why is clive not in fucking jail???" uhhh shenanigans. what if he just got sentenced to 2000 puzzles (this is more than all the puzzles in each mainline game combined) and layton volunteered to keep an eye on him. thats pretty much what i'm rolling with and i think its funny. clive Hates this arrangement, he thinks its Stupid and that he should be given much harsher punishment. which is true. i can give him so much guilt. anyways. basically he does jobs for the professor (paperwork, going through letters, tidying up) with flora.
the professor is There. i would like him to realise hes been hurting flora by leaving her out (even if thats technically for her own benefit). he has been pressured into letting her go on his latest mystery solving trip to Snowsburgh, a little town in laytonverse scotland that i made up. theyve been having weird robberies and the police (incompetent) cannot figure out whos DOING this. so someone sent a letter.
layton also brings along one of his students, my oc/self insert vincent (pretty much uses any pronouns). WHY? vincent is from snowsburgh and layton would rather not be a lost little bitch on this particular outing also i have to introduce gay people to the laytonverse with my blue hair and pronouns ass guy. okay. vincent is majoring in psychology but is also taking layton's archaeology class. for fun! vincent is really interested in this trip because its been a while since he's been at his hometown, and he is fascinated by the professor's autism. he is Also a fan of trying to get into the heads of known criminals. which is a cool and scary surprise for him when he realises "ohhhhh. ohhhhhh thats fucking clive dove."
while layton focuses on the main mystery, that being the snowsburgh robberies, flora begins to notice. some strange things about the town. footprints that dont lead anywhere, the sillhouette of a very... ratlike? figure? slinking away without a trace. anecdotes about some people who recently moved away, and someone who's been missing for a few months now. and that vincent is Really Weird.
she figures she should Probably bring up her concerns with the professor but... would he even listen to her? she had to get CLIVE, A CRIMINAL, to vouch for her to even GO on this trip. she figures that she'd probably have an easier time figuring out the Secrets of Snowsburgh on her own :-) (clive and vincent would later join her investigation because they kinda figure itd be a bit fucked up to let a 15/16yo wander around in an unknown environment on her own (but they largely let her lead the investigation))
do i have character designs? yes. i have to redo them digitally. give me. some time to do that... though we Have drawn vincent on this blog before!

About the democratically determined PL universe: I'm doing a series of polls on increasingly obscure Layton media outside the mainline games to see what people generally consider to be canon. More details here.
Currently open polls (as of September 4, 2023): Professor Layton and the Mansion of the Deathly Mirror, Professor Layton and the Phantom Deity
English Wiki page. This was a novel published in 2010 taking place during the era of the prequels, around the time of Miracle Mask. It has not been published in any other language besides Japanese, but you can read an English fan-translation here.

Some interests and things you like: fashion, reading, video games when i have the extra time
Some funfacts & trivia about you:
What non-Fire Emblem games do you play? aa/dgs/dr has me in its clutches, professor layton/ghost trick may be next (really cheesed by the logical puzzle/crime solving games), jrpgs
Favorite Pokemon type & Pokemon: recently i've been a big fan of poison and ghost & piplup but cyndaquil and growlithe have been giving it a run for its money recently
How did you get into Fire Emblem? i saw nat's celica pfp and thought it was georgia from hm:tot then went from there
What Fire Emblem games have you played? none!! for a large majority of my experience - though i have actually played sov, 3houses, and started engage
First Fire Emblem game: fire emblem echoes: shadows of valentia (soft smile)
Favorite Fire Emblem game: fe7: blazing blade
Any Fire Emblem crushes? raven and berkut are the main ones i'm thinking of rn...
If you’ve played the following games, who was your first S support? n/a
Favorite Fire Emblem class: have always been a big fan of wyvern riders and archers, but mages have a soft spot in my heart
If you were a Fire Emblem character, what would be your class? i'm pretty squishy so probably a mage, but given my personality probably a cleric?
If you were a Three Houses character, what would be your affiliation? i think by personality and maybe status... GD

Have you had any other TOA muses? in order: gray, elincia, mae, tana, l'arachel, rinea, silque, raven, sain, petra, rutger
Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? yes... soft girls, cheery girls, moody bois (though this one has taken a bit of a backseat); plus the occasional outliers like the more stoic ones or cheekier ones
What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? after writing lilina for quite a few months, i've been really having fun with the short, snappy interactions that can be a little silly... reliving teen years in a sense...
Favorite TOA-related memory: out of character - any events like watching on rocky horror picture show halloween and karaoke; in character - i really enjoyed more recently the member run event harmonia (blows a kiss to tsu and n)
How do you pronounce TOA? tee-oh-ay
Got any delusions that didn’t see the light of day in TOA that you’d like to share? [redacted], [redacted], i always think about bringing mareeta or homer because each of them have very fun things to explore especially with the explosion of jugdral muses. i have also toyed with the idea of minerva with a michalis and maria here as well. i've thought about berkut so many times, but.. maybe one day. and many others who just haven't surfaced on the internet.

if you’re worried the wordcount’s gonna scare away readers, it probably won’t. i’d absolutely read a 2k post if it’s about my guy jean desmond descole sycamore. honestly i’d read a 20k post about him if i could. pinky swear
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... ok so i was actually working on this a few months back.. I wrote a very long draft, then I saved it and came back to it, cringed myself out and just. never posted it,,, but after a few months since I figured that its just because I went too deep into it right off the bat instead of giving a ""small"" summary so here we go ATTEMPT 2!!!!
(also if you're an oomf, you're a part of the campaign and you know what orange spoilers mean then do NOT read further pretty please bats my eyelashes at you) AND PROFESSOR LAYTON SPOILERS
So when I talk about campaign Des, I'm referring to a version of Descole that I've roleplayed for almost 5 years now (which is INSANE to me . has it been that long??? whar??? since when??? it's still 2019 is it not????)
The campaign hook is that it's essentially a mass isekai/amnesia plot; Your blorbo from some fandom gets sent into this world patchworked from other universes and whatnot, and they have to figure out their past whilst also finding out how to get back home. Super cheesy stuff on paper ngl, if you read it on some tv series' synopsis you'd probably skip
But its stupid fun to be a bit silly and have Jean Descole from the professor layton series interact with The Mario from the paper mario series and its a guilty pleasure :]
So as for a summary as to what happened over the 5 years (and then I can clarify on any points if anybody is curious (cricket noises));
To clarify who Descole is in this campaign, he only remembers bits of his life in regards to the canon/campaign rp. He remembers having a wife and daughter, but he doesn't remember that they're dead. He remembers his parents getting kidnapped and having to give away his brother, but he doesn't remember what happened to him after that. He remembers bits of his crimes as Descole, but never why other than for either the Azran or Targent. He's right in hindsight, but it's not he's expecting in the present time. He doesn't remember Raymond at all :( poor guy
He also accidentally adopted a young Trucy Wright (like... around 7-8 years old?) because her father is nowhere to be found and his group is actually nuts with close to no responsible adults. ... Actually why don't I talk about them for a sec;
He ended up in a party of like... 9-10 people and yes that is just as insane as it sounds. Some characters would join or leave the party but it has consistently been 7 characters attending excluding Descole. and yes they're all played by different people except mario who's played by the host, so thats like. 8 players at the table at one time
Anyway so this party is pretty much the source of most of his trauma in the campaign funnily enough. One of them blackmails him about his past and then tries to turn the rest of the group against him (meanwhile he dont know SHIT !!! given the amnesia situation), Descole gets defensive and accidentally fans the flames which ends up in the greatest betrayal for him;
When that person shot him in front of the entire group, both friends and foes alike, and they all turned their heads away from him as he bled onto the snow.
I'd love to get further into the party's hijinks(?), how the party came to be, and ultimately where they are now but that's the bare minimum you need to know (and I'd love to answer anything about them!)
Anyway, it's still unknown to this day how this one thing happened, but it's heavily implied to be because of psychological stress mixing with a third secret ingredient; Sometime during all of this, Descole kept finding himself in a room in his sleep-- And often his sleep was plagued by unspeakable nightmares, so this uneventful yet cozy room would've been a comfortable break for him...
... If not for the fact that Desmond lived there, too.
So Desmond is played by the fucking amazing host too and he's apparently a manifestation of his subconscious, and Descole REALLYYYY didn't like that (very much weirded him out, especially since Desmond was extremely blunt and near emotionless; he'd try and give advice but Descole was super nuh-uh about it)
His unease around his subconscious was enough to where he tried to sleep deprive himself to prolong seeing that guy + having nightmares, which that went well (he almost legitimately died lol)
As they have more chances to genuinely talk, their relationship changes. For better or for worse?... Can get further into that if anybody asks lol
Oh one more thing, because the canon roleplay took super long to have sessions, some players opted to have non-canon roleplays to fill in the gaps of time... Which ended up becoming their own side-campaigns that the host would sometimes join in as well. In fact the host has like... A few non-canon campaigns that he's running, and to be honest there's a few non-canon campaigns I end up thinking about a lot
You might've seen the terms "SS", "Chamber RP" or "Persona RP" in my tags and those are some of the non-canon campaigns. Right now we're focused on the canon rp and Chamber RP, which Chamber serves as a tutorial/introduction for a huge overhaul of the ttrpg system we use. We're still in Act I of canon, but Act II is VERY soon which will be using the new system.
SS; Player hosted, everybody fights an evil version of themselves that doesn't have amnesia while trying to take down an international cooperation. This is super fun because Descole in this one finally remembers WHY he did all of those terrible criminal things in the past...
Chamber RP; Host's campaign, amnesia is reversed; You remember your canon counterpart but not the campaign memories... But this doesn't last long as memories of the after starts to seep in. In a similar vibe of the Zero Escape series, you have to find a way out of a sci-fi laboratory while carrying the metaphorical torch of your forgotten hundred other attempts.
Persona RP; Host's campaign; In stark contrast it's super slice of life-y most times lol. Des gets a job as a teacher in this one??? It's set almost 3 years in the future of the canon campaign and as the name implies is SUPER Persona based. There's a strange other plane of existence that supposedly has the answers as to why they have amnesia... And the serial murders that's been going around town.
Anyway I'm definitely leaving out big details for the sake of brevity but I'd be happy to answer anything and thank you if you've read this far!! finally feels good to get this all out ngl

Fic Writer Interview
I was tagged by @slusheeduck for this! Thank you for the tag :) I tag @lynmars79, @shivasdarknight, @risingsoleil, and @haku23 (as well as any writer mutuals who want to do it! I can't remember who all posts on Ao3 and who doesn't, lol)
How many works do you have on AO3?
66!
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
733,508!
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos
Apology: my very first Coco fic, written after I returned from the theater
Week of the Full Moon: a Hellsing fic that's on semi-permanent hiatus until I rewrite it in full (why do people like this one so much?)
Coming Home: another Coco fic
Shadows: yet another Coco fic LOL
Knock Her Socks Off: the only Kill la Kill fic I ever wrote (shameless gamagōri x mako fan)
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to comments, even if it's just "thanks! glad you enjoyed it!" or something like that. Of course, if people ask me questions about the plot or make specific comments, I will always do my best to answer them (though maybe not always in a timely fashion...)
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I would say probably Paramour. Not to give too much away, but near the end Darklaw has to make a very hard choice. It's up to the reader to decide whether the choice was right/necessary or not.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
I usually end up writing best case scenario fics... I think I would choose Surrender, though that might surprise some readers. I think that's the most realistic happy end that this couple would have (realistic = in terms of canon-compliance).
7. Do you write crossovers?
Does it count if you're writing for a crossover game? [Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney] Probably not.... I'm more prone to write AUs than crossovers.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
LOL yeah.... there are a few that I can think of off the top of my head:
when I was actively writing Hellsing on ff dot net circa 2013-2015 there was this bozo who kept telling me I was going to hell for writing about this evil twisted demonic... vampire anime
comment on a fic with a clearly stated master/slave femdom tag "I tried to read this but it's too much like a degrading bdsm slave relationship!" (woah... really???)
"your ocs are really lame!" thanks so am I 👍
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
aren't there jokes about ace people writing the nastiest smut or something... yeah of course I write it! I actually struggle with it though because I'm ace so I don't really... know what people find sexy? Readers have told me "this was so hot" and I'm literally like "thanks! (was it????)" I love reading smut though so I do what any good art student does (study masters, then try to fit my own style to what I learn).
I really like gfd (gentle femdom) so my writing tends to slant in that direction... What could possibly be more sexy than a loving exchange of power? Especially if you add enemies to lovers to the mix and that exchange involves a larger-than-normal amount of trust and vulnerability > i.e. "yes we literally fight to the death every Tuesday but you're the only person I trust to have me tied up like this" No one asked but personally I think I did very well with the rewrite of All Bets are Off... every time I read it I'm just like "wow op made this so yummy"
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
If I did, I don't know it. Funny enough though someone once tried to flag me that someone stole my work... that someone was me under a different pseudonym... so I've stolen from myself!
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I have a pretty laid-back policy; as long as you name me as the original author + give me a link to the translated work, you're allowed to translate my writing into any language.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, but I'm not sure if any escaped the Skype logs... I don't even know if they're accessible now. But I did co-write fics back in the day with friends! I'd love to do so again sometime.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Franken Stein x Marie Mjolnir from Soul Eater (For the record i also like Stein x Medusa bc I read either "I can fix him" or "I can make him worse" depending on my mood)
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Pas de Deux. It's not that I don't think I'll finish, but more that I'm not at the skill level I want to be yet so I can't bring myself to work on it.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Readers say that I'm really good with dialogue but I'm not sure... personally I can't say if it's a strength but I love when I can deep-dive into a character's emotional state and tear apart their personal fallacies while also pretending they are truths for the sake of the narrative... I hope I'm good at that.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action scenes. I can't write fights to save my life. Also setting descriptions.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Personally I learned a lot from reading blogs like Writing with Color and Writing with Disabilities etc. about how to write non-English dialogue (or maybe a variant like ASL). I've tried to incorporate what I've learned in my writing and now I notice things, like when someone overuses foreign language or they write with a very strong accent for the character. Some things I've learned are also contextual! For example, FFXIV writers include accents in their dialogue boxes. That's why I allow Rhoswen to speak with the "ye / fer / n' / 'o" etc. in her dialogue in my fics. But for a character like Father Anderson, in my rewrites it's easier to mention he has a Scottish accent, then maybe include one or two variants in the dialogue rather than having the entire thing be nigh-unreadable.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Unpublished: A Bug's Life. I wrote a fanfic comic for my younger brother on notebook paper one day when we were kids
Published: Hellsing. I published a fanfic in 2012 with an OC main character not realizing that people thought that was cringe (but I still got a lot of positive comments for it so!!!) I started revising it in 2015 so there's an unfinished version you can read here.
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I keep saying I'm going to write for the Paper Magician series but it's genuinely so good that I don't know what I could possibly add to it.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
There's no way I can choose just one fic, so here are my top three:
The Rites of Spring: I think these two should kiss and also dance in the town square. I hope OP finishes it one day.
A Curious Attraction: The original had more words than a standard novel. I hope OP finishes it one day.
Architects of the Ashes: Zenos should not be fixed but he should be put in a sandbox sim. I hope OP finishes it one day.

Update: I have SUCCESSFULLY MIGRATED MY MUSIC LIBRARY TO A NEW MP3 PLAYER AND PROGRAM! *Fweet*
Additionally, since I was doing a search for whether or not anyone had done English covers of the Professor Layton themes and, in the process of finding one for Time Travel, fell down a rabbit hole of an amateur video game symphony orchestra who clearly REALLY like covering DS games at the moment given their concerts in the last five years or so have included:
The aforementioned Time Travel, ending theme for Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. The Japanese versions of most of the Layton games had vocal tracks; rather than translate them or release them unchanged, Level-5 just made them instrumentals. Someone wrote English lyrics for this one that seem to have been at least partially derived from the original.
Lullaby For You, the original ending theme for The World Ends With You
N's Farewell from Pokemon Black and White
Two different arrangements from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers - one from the farewell sequence, one which seems to be either the theme or a more general medley.
Okay, they list Vector to the Heavens as specifically the KH 3 version, and they've done quite a few Kingdom Hearts tracks, but you see why I find it notable when someone did TIME TRAVEL of all things
My brother walks in and I explain this to him, listing all but the last, and Bro goes "This is the saddest playlist ever." I continue immediately with both Dragon Roost Island and Rito Village (one of my favorite Zelda leitmotifs.)
Bro, immediately: This is the most You Playlist ever.
Me: I haven't gotten to the kicker -
Bro: Vector to the Heavens.
Me: Yes, but that's still not it.
Bro:... Ghost Trick?
Me: Not yet, at least. (But given they've done Godot's theme in addition to the entirely-predictable Objection from Ace Attorney - that's like saying you're any gaming music cover artist and you've done Undertale, of course they've covered Undertale, of course they've got a ton of Final Fantasy - and as I've stated the clear Deep Cut DS Games, I wouldn't be shocked if there is one in the next year or so.)
Bro: *Pauses and thinks*
Me: What's the last game you would ever think someone would cover? *Bro starts going down a rabbit hole* The most ME last game you'd ever think of?
Bro:... Endless Ocean: Blue World?
Me: YES. And granted, it's Nella Fantasia, like, you get classical crossover singers doing it, but WHO WOULD /EVER/ DO IT AS PART OF A VIDEO GAME ORCHESTRA CONCERT?!
Bro: Yeah, I was thinking too many people like Style Savvy.
Me: Oh no it's super-niche, I'd be pleased to hear one of the idol songs from Styling Star but I'm still not over Ring A Ding getting into Smash and people being surprised it was good, that was more than I realistically expect from non-fashion game fans. BUT ENDLESS OCEAN BLUE WORLD SPECIFICALLY?! (Someday I will actually play the first one.)
Immediately below it, Musique pour la tristesse de Xion.
Bro:... Someone there is hooked DIRECTLY into your brain.
Me: I KNOW, RIGHT?

the great ace attorney chronicles post
i went to a really cool video game / CD / DVD / comic / manga store and i HAD to patronize them because i don't want such stores to stop existing even if i'm not going to go there very often because it's quite far from where i live. so i bought the great ace attorney chronicles on switch because it was the only game i felt like i really wanted to buy.
i have played most of the other ace attorney games. i like them, but i'm not an active fan, if that makes sense? i love the weirdness of the characters. i like the game mechanics. the stories are usually fun. i even played the crossover game with professor layton a few years ago. so now the great ace attorney chronicles is both Great Ace Attorney games stuck together for my convenience?! how... convenient!!!
anyway this is the first time i've played an ace attorney game in several years and i started playing it with just a little trepidation. like what if it's not fun? but of course it'll be fun… but what if it's not? i was also interested to see how the english version approaches localization when this one explicitly and undeniably takes place in japan. i already knew that they couldn't localize the name of ryuunosuke naruhodou (apart from omitting a "u" from each name), and i also already knew that phoenix wright's non-localized name is naruhodou, so i was curious to see how they'd tackle it. it seems they've taken the approach of making jokes out of some of the names (iyesa nosa and kyurio korekuta, for example) while keeping the important characters' names intact and punless to the untrained eye (like you only know the pun of "naruhodo" if you know a little japanese). which i think is the best path they could have taken, given the difficult circumstances of pitting "an entire history of punful localized names in the series" against "keeping japanese names for characters who are clearly japanese." (i even just went to court-records.net to check on the japanese name of korekuta and yes of course it was a localization pun and his original japanese name was different. that means they also added or greatly changed brett's line about how the "kyuri" in his name is like the word for "cucumber.") very interesting. i'm eager to look at more fun localized or not localized names as i continue the game. that being said, i do want to know the naming puns for the characters whose names remain in japanese, like hosonaga. (without looking at the kanji… hosoi means thin and nagai means long, so is he mr. long and thin, is that the joke…? [note added in later: yes, that does seem to be the extent of the joke. even the kanji match.] ) and mikotoba (mi can mean beautiful, and kotoba is words, so is he mr. beautiful words, is that the joke…? but that doesn't have anything to do with being a professor of forensic science?? is it a different mi? is it body, is it 3? i don't know. [note added in later: it's a different mi. it's 御 which you usually see pronounced as "go" and the phrase 御言葉 mikotoba means "word of god" in a christian sense. so that's the joke?]) maybe i'll just play the whole game and then look up the jokes of everyone's names later?
(after playing the 2nd and 3rd chapters)
i did have a strong suspicion that kazuma was going to die. his death flag was "too flawlessly capable; not weird enough." there's no way someone that smart, capable, and helpful could survive an entire ace attorney game. his death was extra sad, though, because accidental deaths are sadder than murders, because there's nothing to get angry about.
i knew that we were expecting a Herlock Sholmes to appear. when i realized that in japanese they just called him sherlock holmes like normal, i was ready to be annoyed at the change that must have been due to some copyright problem (how's the conan doyle estate? don't care). but i was eventually pleased to see that the character of herlock sholmes is annoying as fuck and the annoying stupid name suits him perfectly, so i have no complaint.
i noticed that much of the english translation is in british english (though i feel like there might be some inconsistencies?) and that's a nice touch, i think. make us dumbass yanks read "defence" and "manoeuvring" and the like and we can't object because the game takes place in england. and the japanese characters are speaking english. the difficulty level of english they're speaking is very high. if they are speaking an accordingly high level of japanese in the original text, i bet it would be super difficult for me to read. i haven't read the original japanese whatsoever in any ace attorney games, but i get the strong impression that the localization team for this game has done an excellent job translating. a lot of the text does not feel translated at all, and you read it without it being obvious that it has been paraphrased by necessity. if that makes sense.
we met van zieks and he didn't seem to leave a strong antagonistic impression the way some prosecutors have. like for comparison, in the early games i remember being so pissed at edgeworth that it took me a long time to let him into my heart as a sympathetic character. he was such a strong antagonist in the courtroom that i could not let go of the feeling that he was going to be a thorn in my side. even auchi left a stronger impression of antagonism than van zieks because he just wouldn't shut the fuck up in the first trial. but van zieks didn't put up that much of a fight, did he? so it was a bit of a weak comeback after 5 years, wasn't it? and the defendant got a not guilty verdict by some incomprehensible technicality. it was a little bit pathetic. van zieks's animations and gestures were fantastic, though. i wanted to see the various white parts of his outfit get stained with red wine. i'm very interested to learn more about him. at this point, right after the third chapter, knowing what little we know about van zieks, i suspect that his backstory is sad. but maybe he'll put up more of a fight in the mean time before we get to learning about his character more personally.
i LOVE the way susato raises her eyebrows with pity and looks at you like you're the biggest fucking idiot in the world. she's the best.
all the ace attorney games up to apollo justice, i've played at least twice, maybe three times. it was fun, but looking back, that kind of game also presses some of my buttons that makes me remember it as something of a vexing struggle that we're glad is now over. like all these problems cropped up one after another and we solved them and now it's all set. so going back and replaying those games feels like it would be revisiting problems i've already solved and don't need to solve again (and it would also be extra vexing because i'll know i've solved them before but i won't remember exactly how to do it). so even though i do look back on ace attorney games fondly, i don't know if i want to replay them. (including this game when i'm done with it). even though there were some really really good moments that i might like to experience again. maybe i'll watch playthroughs or something.
i think van zieks isn't as satisfying an opponent as edgeworth partly because of the jury setup; it's like he and i have a common enemy, and that is the idiot jurors, so there isn't such an exciting animus between us, and something is lost. i also think the wine thing really isn't that funny the 10th time. and so far, he hasn't made the kind of really desperate, truly vexed face i want to see… it's like he's not really that invested. i want to see him come closer to fully losing his cool. he's too composed… i don't know. maybe he'll lose it later on. but that's two trials now. [note added in later: he did finally make some truly deranged poses at the very end of the second game. it was pretty satisfying to see his shoulders heaving with desperation.]
TANGENT: out of curiosity i started reading "i am a cat" by our unfortunate character and real life person Natsume Soseki, and i'm very tickled by it so far. i can really feel the love and skill that went into the translation as well; the formal wording they use is so consistently funny. this is truly the self-important and blithely curious viewpoint of a cat. given the complexity of the english vocabulary used, i bet the japanese is crazy difficult. but i certainly like it a lot better than a lot of what i had to read in school. (i heard it is a book often assigned to schoolchildren in japan.) it's also interesting how they sort of half-localized it, translating main character names so we get the puns but leaving place names and some characters' names untranslated? i wonder about that. (the version i'm reading is the 1972 translation by aiko ito and graeme wilson.) i also notice the story takes place during the russo-japanese war, a time period i am slightly familiar with from golden kamuy. the late meiji era. it seems like i'm in a late meiji era spectacular with these three works of fiction lately.
i bet the sequences with herlock's deductions are polarizing among players. if you're impatient, i bet they're excruciating. but i enjoy them well enough. herlock is such a reigen. he's such a dipshit. he's more of a dipshit than reigen.
overall i think the use of motion capture for the character models really adds something special. i appreciate that they went all-out with it and didn't stick only to Plausible posing. that being said, i don't think it hits the mark 100% of the time. (like some of natsume soseki's movements, for example...) plus there's the inherent uncanny contradiction of "moving smoothly between poses (human-like)" and "otherwise maintaining static poses (less human-like)," if that makes sense. like they don't have idle animations. i guess it's not a big deal. i also wonder if the use of 3d models made the animators less inclined to go wild with the faces. i think some of the faces should've gone a little wilder maybe? like if van zieks's eyes got much wider when he was upset or something? hard to pinpoint what i'm longing for.
windibank's little habit with the gun was not fucking cute or funny at all. what were they thinking. honestly.
i laid in my bed for 11 hours and played ace attorney until it wasn't fun anymore. i like that there is the story mode option for when you're stuck and you can't even be bothered to google the solution. i don't give even half a shit about the stupid achievements they have added in to the game. achievements are worthless and meaningless when it's a linear visual novel. especially on the nintendo switch. so even though i feel slightly miffed with myself on some level for using the autoplay option when it means that you get no achievements for that section… on a logical level, i don't care and am in fact more miffed by the fact that there are achievements at all. because that's dumb.
so there's gonna be some dramatic personal history reason why van zieks is racist against japanese people… ok
the more i look at ryunosuke, the more it sinks in… this isn't a word i use lightly, but the only word that can describe him… is "cutie." of course he strongly resembles phoenix wright, but phoenix was never this much of a cutie. ryunosuke is the one who is a cutie. he is just as much of a cutie as apollo justice. or almost.
i just wish van zieks's white gloves would turn red when he crushes the chalice of red wine in his hand. is that too much to ask?
(plays a lot more without writing any notes)
(i hated myself for wasting my saturday playing ace attorney in bed for 11 hours, but i did the same thing the next week.)
kazuma reappears in a cute and sexy new white outfit, obviously a foil to ryunosuke's all black outfit, and with a red splash-of-blood cravat at his neck to show that he died once. but the important part is the very large and unmistakable strap-on harness at his crotch. please tell me there's fanart where he straps the appropriate implement to the front of that thing.
i'm glad gregson turned out to be a bad guy. or, you know, grey area. when he showed up i was like, "are we supposed to like this guy? i can't tell… certainly he's not the gumshoe of this game… they wouldn't give him an annoying habit like constantly eating fish and chips if he was intended to be the gumshoe of this game… right…?" though i'll say that every time he showed up, i was well and truly struck with a VERY powerful craving for potato wedges. oh my god. i can practically taste them. fried fish i don't have such strong feelings about but oh my god. i need to get potato wedges soon. with the skin on. what was i talking about? gregson is not very likeable. i do appreciate the audacious character design of choosing not to endow the man with a chin.
what is the connotation of unicorns in japan? what about in britain? because as far as i know, to americans like me, the connotation is maaaybe "mystical magical legendary forest gracefulness" but primarily "little-girliness and silliness and like rainbows and sunshine cutesiness." so when stronghart appeared behind the bench and his usual walking stick had turned into a unicorn apropos of nothing??? and he bangs it like a gavel even though it doesn't have any surfaces that look good for banging on and he's gonna poke holes into the gaveling block??? and neither he nor anyone else comments on it, ever??? it was more baffling than anything. like, first of all, does this fit his motif, stylistically or symbolically? what message were they trying to send with the unicorn? and why is it suddenly a unicorn now that he's acting as the judge? why couldn't it have been a unicorn the whole time and then the joke is that he bangs his usual walking stick instead of a gavel? why didn't he use his usual walking stick? why is the joke instead that he put away his old walking stick, brought out his fancy unicorn walking stick, and used that as a gavel? just incomprehensible. (also was this guy's japanese name really "Hurt Vortex"? fantastic. that's awe-inspiring. ok to be fair you could have transliterated it as "Hart" instead and then it would actually be a plausible given name. if the localization team was hardcore they could've tried to make "vortex" work by approaching it from a dutch "voort" kind of angle. maybe.)
speaking of gavels, when jigoku was on the witness stand, i was really expecting him to bring out his own gavel. i know he had it in his pocket. he had it in his pocket when we last saw him. it would've been some very welcome comic relief if he had brought out his own gavel and banged it a little.
for years i went to court-records.net to get my explanations of ace attorney character name puns, but it seems they haven't updated it with names from great ace attorney resolve… the people running the site must have lost their thunder… i certainly don't have enough ace attorney thunder to go help them with their website. i guess i'll go to the reprehensible fandom wikia. (grits teeth) it's… very comprehensive and helpful... i looked up a lot of the japanese names of the characters and some of the puns are pretty weak. makes me feel better about some of the weaker localization puns. sometimes there's only so much you can do.
you can tell by the way the characters use both -san/-sama and Mr./Miss that they are frequently flipping back and forth between english and japanese. some hardcore person should put together a hack of these games in which they're speaking japanese for every line that they're speaking in japanese in canon and english for every line that they're speaking english. you'll have to come up with some creative solution for the names.
i have finished playing. i enjoyed the game (i.e., the duology of both games) but it didn't blow me out of the water. i would recommend it to someone who already likes visual novels and ace attorney games, and i will tentatively categorize it as "worth playing" if you already suspect that you might like it. but i won't replay it. i think the motion capture character animation was, on the whole, really funny and totally worth it. even just shamspeare alone was worth it. but like i said, i think some of the faces should've deformed a little more sometimes to show greater emotion. all the outfits were fun. i have to say that in terms of old-timey london aesthetic and interacting with funny londony characters while solving mysteries, that itch has been VERY well scratched by the professor layton series, so this really didn't feel like anything especially new or worthwhile in that respect. i wonder if the game's scenario wouldn't have been more fun if they had stayed in late meiji era japan. and i don't feel one way or another about how *erlock *olmes was involved in the story, but it's worth pointing out that in western culture, he is a pretty played out and tired character, completely lacking any kind of intriguing freshness. even reinventing him as a total reigen can't cleanse him of that tired feeling, in my view. though of course in the end you can't help but love him a little. and his excessively stylized trenchcoat was magnificent.
i guess it was interesting to play a game that starkly highlights the similarities and differences between victorian london and late meiji japan, with characters often butting heads between the two cultures, as someone who is part of neither culture (but who is a native speaker of one of the languages). though during my golden kamuy fixation i did spend a lot of time in the same era of japanese history. and as an english speaker in america, i've absorbed my fair share of cultural and historical information about victorian london. so i was a bit familiar with both cultures. but i guess my point is… they couldn't come up with a more fun or interesting flaw for van zieks than having him be racist against japanese people? i dunno. in conclusion, the culture shock element of the story was necessary but not very striking to me. it didn't leave a strong impression. and it's also worth noting that despite the characters constantly extolling their respective countries, looking back in history, no one nowadays really likes that both great britain and japan were Empires at that time… like, you know… imperialism turned out bad for a lot of people… it's actually quite a bad thing that they had in common.
it seems the last ace attorney game i haven't played yet is Spirit of Justice. i haven't decided whether i want to buy it. it feels like i've been out of touch with phoenix and apollo for a decade and i'd have to catch up again before i could play another game that features them. hmm...
well, what matters now is that i can finally look at some great ace attorney fanart.

Ok, time for some thoughts regarding yesterday's Nintendo Direct!
Pikmin 4: Nothing too revolutionary, just taking the Pikmin formula and refining/expanding it, like Pikmin 2 and 3 did before it. And honestly, that's not a bad thing! I love the Pikmin games, they're really fun and charming and this one seems to continue that trend. It seems we're getting all the existing Pikmin types in addition to the new Ice Pikmin so that'll be cool. And the new doggo is adorable! I'm really looking forward to this one.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective: This is a game that I always wanted to play and never got to do it, so I'm glad to see it ported to the Switch! Maybe this will be the time I actually play it.
Sea of Stars: Absolutely gorgeous and looks really fun as well, taking inspiration from one of my favorite games ever. Apparently it got a demo so I'll probably give that a try. I still need to play The Messenger though...
Game Boy and Game Boy Advance added to Nintendo Switch Online: Finally! And now I actually have the Expansion Pack thanks to a friend so I can get hyped about GBA too. The libraries are a bit limited for the time being but that's to be expected. Looking forward to replaying some of my favorites from that era and also try a few classics for the first time. Although the games I'm most hyped about are the ones that were confirmed to come in the future, like Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Pokémon TCG, Metroid Fusion and of course freaking GOLDEN SUN (yes, I'm ready to replay it for the millionth time).
Metroid Prime Remastered: Okay, I wasn't expecting this one, even though it had been rumored for a while. While I would've liked to see the entire trilogy in one package, the first Prime is arguably the best one and also one of the best games ever made. The remake looks amazing and much more polished than just a simple HD port. Seriously, if you haven't played this game before, give it a try, it's a masterpiece, and this is coming from someone who hates shooters (Metroid Prime isn't really a shooter).
Baten Kaitos I & II Remaster: HOLY SHIT. Another one (two?) that I always wanted to play but didn't get when it first came out before it became impossible to find, and never bothered with trying to emulate. I'd love to give the series a chance on modern hardware.
Professor Layton And The New World of Steam: HOOOOOO BOY!!! This might seriously be my favorite announcement of the Direct, even though they didn't really show us anything! I was a HUGE Layton fan during the DS era and I was so sad that the series kinda just died all of a sudden. I'm honestly so fucking hyped for this! Please be good, please be good, please be good!
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 4: The new track looks amazing! Yoshi's Island was one of the defining games from my childhood so this gets me extremely nostalgic. Also Birdo was a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting characters in the pass! While I don't really care about Birdo in particular, this opens the door for more characters so maybe this means I can finally have my boy Diddy Kong again. Please. It's been so long.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Honestly I don't have a lot to say about this one. Am I hyped? Absolutely. But we still know so little about this game! What's the story about? How does it differ from BotW? Although, part of me kinda wishes it stays this way. Trailers tend to spoil too much stuff these days, so I'm fine with keeping the surprises for when I actually play the game. Oh, and it's a minor thing, but I hope they bring back Wolf Link and/or a similar mechanic (and not locked to amiibo this time). I just loved exploring Hyrule with a doggo.
Overall a really exciting Direct, and there were also a bunch of other cool announcements that I didn't touch here. Now to work on my backlog so I can play shiny new games without feeling guilty, lol.

Thanks so much to @abba-enthusiast for tagging me to list 10 fandoms and 1 character from each. This is going to be hard to choose but i'll try not to choose main characters for all of them. bear with me because this is a messy list:
tintenherz-triology (you knew this was coming) - where to begin! he's only a minor side-character, but i'll choose the black prince (interesting character. i like his bear. it's the overall vibe that made me choose him). i would choose them all if i could though.
beforeigners - alfhildr enginnsdottir!!!!!
everything everywhere all at once - deirdre and waymond!!!! (i have now seen that movie three times)
professor layton (yes the nintendo game for kids) - old luke, aka clive, because he's one of the first fictional men i can remember having a crush on
the never ending story - artax or graógramán, they have some of the saddest stories
derry girls - sister michael and michelle
over the garden wall - greg <3
barbara demick. i know, not technically a fandom or character because she's a real person, and they're actual events, but i'm a fan so it counts. she writes banger books that gave me goosebumps. if i recommend her books to you, that's a compliment, because it means you're smart
not me (still have the header! might change it soon) - yok <3 <3
stardew valley - harvey, because we're married. he still charges me money when i pass out in the mines though >:(
I tag @boom-baebee @langernameohnebedeutung @awkwardplant @notgreengardens @obamashair and @kinderschreckfigur, if you haven't already done it. and to all my followers, consider yourself tagged, because i wanna hear yours too!!

About the democratically determined PL universe: I'm doing a series of polls on increasingly obscure Layton media outside the mainline games to see what people generally consider to be canon. More details here.
Currently open polls (as of September 1, 2023): Professor Layton and the Cheerful Mystery, Professor Layton and the Mansion of the Deathly Mirror
English Wiki page. Professor Layton and the Phantom Deity is a novel published in 2009. It has not been officially translated into any other language. It takes place the summer before Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, while Luke is still 10. You can read a fan translation here.

bestie I am sending these from my other acc because I remembered I saw you rbed that meme but I'm logged in to the other one
07. THE CHARIOT: SUCCESS (How do you measure success?)
20. JUDGMENT: CRITICISM (Are you afraid of how others will perceive your writing?)
47. KNIGHT OF SWORDS: AMBITION (What is your loftiest, wildest goal?)
64. ACE OF WANDS: NEW GROWTH (How do you grow the seed of an idea into a full story?)
68. FIVE OF WANDS: DISAGREEMENT (Do your characters ever act of their own accord? Or do you find that adage false or silly?)
74. PAGE OF WANDS: EXPLORING (Do you prefer to write and explore new worlds or stick to contemporary settings?)
THANK YOU JAK ILY.... also i love this icon so much
07. THE CHARIOT: SUCCESS (How do you measure success?)
answered this one already, thank god bc it's such a hard question SKJHFSJDF
20. JUDGMENT: CRITICISM (Are you afraid of how others will perceive your writing?)
kind of, but not really? i am, not like in a "they'll think this is bad" kind of way but in like a "they will misinterpret my themes" kind of way. like, at this point i Know my writing is good, but being on tumblr has made me lose faith in people's reading comprehension skills
47. KNIGHT OF SWORDS: AMBITION (What is your loftiest, wildest goal?)
HMMMMM....i want to be able to make a comfortable living off of my books alone. that is SUCH a lofty goal but the idea of being a full-time author who lives in like a nice idyllic little apartment in a nordic country is THE dream. and also i want to be so good that no one ever remembers jkr again.
64. ACE OF WANDS: NEW GROWTH (How do you grow the seed of an idea into a full story?)
i feel like this could be its own post......but basically i Always start with the main character(s). then i like make a playlist to get some Vibes going and brainstorm to the music, then i read a bunch of novels that have the same themes as the story i'm going for, and then i go right into outlining or at least sketching out a beginning, middle, and end. i'm a big fan of Susan Dennard's writing process, and i've picked up her use of writing notebooks. it's been a HUGE part of developing stories for me, especially as a chronic notebook hoarder JDFNDFJNG
68. FIVE OF WANDS: DISAGREEMENT (Do your characters ever act of their own accord? Or do you find that adage false or silly?)
this has always been a hard question for me to answer because yes, they do, but the thing is that my characters were very often Also alters living in my head, sooooo. these days, when i'm trying to write characters who are Just characters, idk, they don't seem to be sentient in the same way. sometimes i'll realize they need to do something that surprises me and wasn't in my plan, but it's not the same thing to me. but then again, i have no idea how non-system authors experience this :P
74. PAGE OF WANDS: EXPLORING (Do you prefer to write and explore new worlds or stick to contemporary settings?)
i HATE doing research for real life places so i pretty much exclusively write worlds of my own creation. even when it's supposed to be contemporary-esque, like Codebreakers or Four Crooked Branches, they take place in like completely fabricated towns and i never specify what country they're in or what countries even exist in this world. i take the Professor Layton approach to worldbuilding. the two exceptions are What the House Remembers, which takes place in Miami, and Seventh Summer, which takes place in Nantucket. and THAT'S only the case because i actually went/am going to those places to experience it for myself. i'm sure once i'm more well-traveled i'll feel more comfortable writing about different real places.
